In the middle of 2020, with its borders tightly closed to the rest of the world, Australia almost achieved the local elimination of COVID-19 and subsequently maintained 'COVID-zero' in most parts of the country for the following year. Australia has since faced the relatively unique challenge of deliberately 'undoing' these achievements by progressively easing restrictions and reopening. Exploring the role of mathematical modelling in navigating a course through the pandemic through qualitative interviews with modellers and others working closely with modelling, we argue that each of these two significant phases of Australia's COVID-19 experience can be understood as distinct forms of 'model society'. This refers at once to the society enacted through the governance of risk, and to the visions of societal outcomes – whether to be sought or to be avoided – that are offered up by models. Each of the two model societies came about through a reflexive engagement with risk facilitated by models, and the iterative relationship between the representations of society enacted within models and the possibilities that these representations generate in the material world beyond them. Previous literature has applied system-focused structures to understand the success of First Nations Peoples' nutrition and exercise group programmes. Existing system-focused measures have included biomedical outcomes, access and service utilization. By broadening the focus of programme success beyond the system, we can evaluate programmes from a First Nations Peoples' lifeworld perspective. Critical hermeneutics and yarning using a lens of Habermas' Theory of Communicative Action to the literature has the potential to transform understandings of "success" in First Nations Peoples' nutrition and exercise group programmes. In this literature interpretation, we explored the critical success factors from a lifeworld perspective, giving scope to go beyond a system perspective to include a cultural, social or personal perspective. Our yarning led us to understand that there is a communicative relationship between explicit system structures and implicit lifeworld concepts that are critical success factors for First Nations nutrition and exercise group programmes. We have developed a set of reflective questions to guide others in considering a lifeworld perspective. Our findings represent a shift away from success measured by the dominant power structure to respect the lifeworld culture, knowledges and values of First Nations Peoples towards shared understanding and mutual decision-making. In the last two decades, the medical understanding of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) has dramatically improved, however, there are still significant gaps in our understanding of the psychological adjustment of families coping with CF. We examined the utility of the Social Cognitive Processing (SCP) Model in understanding the interactions of parents and young people with CF. We also examined the relationship between social constraints, a key construct in the SCP model, sense of coherence (SOC) and other psychological adjustment indicators for young people with CF. Participants comprised 49 individuals with CF, aged 16-25, recruited through state-based CF organisations in Australia. The results indicated that participant ratings of difficulties with communication (social constraints) were positively associated with ratings of depression, anxiety, and stress and negatively related to ratings of positive affect and seeing life challenges as predictable, manageable and meaningful (SOC). Ratings of SOC were also positively related to ratings of positive affect and negatively related to ratings of depression, anxiety and stress. A significant mediating effect of SOC was also identified in the relationships between social constraints and positive affect and social constraints and stress. Background: It is likely that calls for disaster medical assistance teams (DMATs) continue in response to international disasters. As part of a national survey, the present study was designed to evaluate the Australian DMAT experience and the need for logistic support. Methods: Data were collected via an anonymous mailed survey distributed via State and Territory representatives on the Australian Health Protection Committee, who identified team members associated with Australian DMAT deployments from the 2004 Asian Tsunami disaster. Results: The response rate for this survey was 50% (59/118). Most of the personnel had deployed to the South East Asian Tsunami affected areas. The DMAT members had significant clinical and international experience. There was unanimous support for dedicated logistic support with 80% (47/59) strongly agreeing. Only one respondent (2%) disagreed with teams being self sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours. Most felt that transport around the site was not a problem (59%; 35/59), however, 34% (20/59) felt that transport to the site itself was problematic. Only 37% (22/59) felt that pre-deployment information was accurate. Communication with local health providers and other agencies was felt to be adequate by 53% (31/59) and 47% (28/59) respectively, while only 28% (17/59) felt that documentation methods were easy to use and reliable. Less than half (47%; 28/59) felt that equipment could be moved easily between areas by team members and 37% (22/59) that packaging enabled materials to be found easily. The maximum safe container weight was felt to be between 20 and 40 kg by 58% (34/59). Conclusions: This study emphasises the importance of dedicated logistic support for DMAT and the need for teams to be self sufficient for a minimum period of 72 hours. There is a need for accurate pre deployment information to guide resource prioritisation with clearly labelled pre packaging to assist access on site. Container weights should be restricted to between 20 and 40 kg, which would assist transport around the site, while transport to the site was seen as problematic. There was also support for training of all team members in use of basic equipment such as communications equipment, tents and shelters and water purification systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article provides information on the Information Seeking in Context (ISIC) Conference that was held at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, from 19-21 July 2006. Various interesting papers were presented at the symposium which focused on information theory. One of the sessions focused on rural communities. Theresa Anderson from the University of Technology Systems and Chun Wei Choo from the University of Toronto were two of the speakers among the several who presented their papers.

This paper presents the findings of a research project about Australian TAFE libraries' information practices. The projects addressed two research questions: What are the practices that TAFE libraries use to teach and foster information literacy? What changes have occurred since the last TAFE information literacy survey in 2001? During 2005, 154 libraries completed a web-based survey. The results provide a status of current practice and identify key areas that TAFE libraries can focus on to improve professional practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Ultrasound plays an integral role in pregnancy management in Australia. The role of a sonographer as the frontline practitioner is to scan the patient and identify any possible abnormalities, including foetal demise. This study sought the views, experiences and practices of Australian sonographers in communicating an adverse outcome to pregnant patients in different departmental settings in public and private sector practice. Method: Ten individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 sonographers from metropolitan Sydney and 1 rural based sonographer. Results: The key themes emerging from the interview data were of ambiguity and inconsistency both in understanding the sonographer role and with practice protocols around communication when delivering “bad news” to pregnant patients. Most of the participants had not received any formal training in communication techniques. Conclusion: The sonographers wanted more autonomy, but with support and an agreed and consistent approach from their radiologists or sonologists. Practice sites that achieved the best results were those that had the greatest direct collaboration between the sonographer and the sonologist, which was demonstrated in the obstetrician-sonologist-run practices. Policy reform, improved clarity and standardised protocols are needed to improve practice guidelines for sonographers in communicating adverse outcomes to an expectant mother. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
