The article reports on the defeat suffered by Russian-born professional tennis player Maria Sharapova from U.S. tennis player Serena Williams in the finals of the Australian Open in January 2007. Sharapova acknowledged that she could not get into the match due to the excellent form displayed by Williams. In spite of the loss, Sharapova retained her number one ranking due to her overall performance in the 2006 season.
