Abstract: International audience; The mechanical behavior of titanium-based alloy Ti6242S was investigated under uniaxial tensile loading at 723 K (450 °C) and 823 K (550 °C) under air and argon environments. Microtensile specimens ranging from 1 mm to 100 µm in thickness were tested to investigate the influence of the decrease in thickness on mechanical properties. Fractographic analyses were carried out using scanning electron microscopy. At 450 °C and 550 °C, a decrease in yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and strain-to-failure with decreasing thickness was observed. These drops in the macroscopic tensile properties of the thinnest specimens result from a combination of oxidation, which further impairs the specimens with a high surface-to-volume ratio, and the overall lower number of colonies of α lamellae contained in thinner specimens. Ti6242S exhibited dynamic strain aging at 450 °C, especially in specimens with thickness below 500 µm.

Abstract: International audience; Ligands play a key role in controlling activity of organometallic complexes so that development of new ligands to overcome the challenge is the main topic of modern chemistry. The first example of 1,1-hydride migratory insertion and intramolecular redox reaction has been realized in this work by applying a new ligand in rare-earth metal chemistry. The novel rare-earth metal complexes LMesRECH2TMS(THF) (RE = Y (1a), Dy (1b), Er (1c), Yb (1d), LMes = 1-(3-(2,6-iPr2C6H3N=CH)C8H4N)-CH2CH2-3-(2-CH2—4,6-Me2C6H2)-(N(CH)2NC), THF = tetrahydrofuran) bearing a ligand with imino, indolyl, NHC (N-heterocyclic carbene) multiple functionalities were synthesized and characterized. Treatment of complexes 1 with silanes (PhSiH3 or PhSiH2Me or PhSiD3) selectively produced the unprecedented 1,1-hydride (or deuterated H) migratory insertion of the indolyl moiety of the novel unsymmetrical dinuclear rare-earth metal complexes 2. The complex 2a reacts with Ph2C-O to give the selective C-O double bond insertion to the RE-Co-methylene-Mes bond product 3a which further reacts with another Ph2C-O (or DMAP, 4-N, N-dimethylaminopyridine) affording the novel μ-η2:η3-dianionic 3-iminoindolyl dinuclear rare-earth metal complex 4a. The latter is formed through an unusual intramolecular redox reaction (through electron migration from the 2-carbanion of the indolyl ring to the imino motif) resulting in the re-aromatization of the indolyl ring.

Abstract: This work undertakes to combine the interests of IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) and standard Finite Element Methods (FEM) for the global/local simulation of structures. The idea is to adopt a hybrid global-IGA/local-FEM modeling, thereby benefiting from: (i) the superior geometric description and per-Degree-Of-Freedom accuracy of IGA for capturing global, regular responses, and (ii) the ability of FEM to compute local, strongly non-linear or even singular behaviors. For the sake of minimizing the implementation effort, we develop a coupling scheme that is fully non-invasive in the sense that the initial global spline model to be enriched is never modified and the construction of the coupling operators can be performed using conventional FE packages. The key ingredient is to express the FEM-to-IGA bridge, based on B{\'e}zier extraction, to transform the initial global spline interface into a FE one on which the local FE mesh can be constructed. This allows to resort to classic FE trace operators to implement the coupling. It results in a strategy that offers the opportunity to simply couple an isogeometric code with any robust FE code suitable for the modelling of complex local behaviors. The method also easily extends in case the users only have at their disposal FE codes. This is the situation that is considered for the numerical illustrations. Abstract: Biocompatibility of nanoparticles is the most essential factor in their use in clinical applications. In this study, hyperbranched spermine (HS), hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HSPF), and hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-glucose (HSPG) were synthesized for DNA protection and gene delivery to breast cancer cells. The synthesis of HSPG and HSPF was confirmed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) spectroscopy. The HS/DNA, HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-folic acid/glucose/DNA (HSPFG/DNA) nanoparticles were prepared by combining different concentrations of HS, HSPF, and HSPG with the same amount of DNA. The ability of HS, HSPF, and HSPG to interact with DNA and protect it against plasm digestion was evaluated using agarose gel. Moreover, in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility of HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and HSPFG/DNA was investigated using MTT assay and calculating weight change and survival ratio of BALB/c mice, respectively. The results of agarose gel electrophoresis showed that HS, HSPF, and HSPG have the high ability to neutralize the negative charge of DNA and protect it against plasma degradation. The results of in vivo cytotoxicity assay revealed that the HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and HSPFG/DNA nanoparticles have good biocompatibility on female BALB/c mice. In vitro and in vivo transfection assays revealed that functionalization of the surface of HS using polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HSPF) and polyethylene glycol-glucose (HSPG) significantly increases gene delivery efficiency in vitro and in vivo. These results also showed that gene transfer using both HSPF and HSPG copolymers increases gene transfer efficiency compared to when only one of them is used. The HSPFG/DNA nanoparticles have a high potential for use in therapeutic applications because of their excellent biocompatibility and high gene transfer efficiency to breast cancer tissue.

Abstract: International audience; Thermal heat transfers, including solar and infrared radiation in cities, are key processes for studying urban heat islands, outdoor human thermal comfort, energy consumption, and production. Thus, accurate radiative transfer models are required to compute the solar and infrared fluxes in complex urban geometry accounting for the spectral and directional properties of the atmosphere and city fabric materials. In addition, these reference models may be used to evaluate existing parametrization models of radiative heat transfer and to develop new ones. The present article introduces a new reference model for outdoor radiative exchange based on the backward Monte Carlo method. The integral formulations of the direct and scattered solar, and the terrestrial infrared radiative flux densities are presented. This model can take into account the ground (e.g., roads, grass), different types of buildings and vegetation (e.g., trees consisting of opaque leaves and trunks) with their spectral and directional (Lambertian and specular) reflectivity of materials. Numerical validations of the algorithm are presented against the results of a state-of-the-art model based on the radiosity method for the particular case of an infinitely long street canyon. Abstract: International audience; Early life is a critical period where gut ecosystem and functions are being established with significant impact on health. For regulatory, technical, and cost reasons, in vitro gut models can be used as a relevant alternative to in vivo assays. An exhaustive literature review was conducted to adapt the Mucosal Artificial Colon (M-ARCOL) to specific physicochemical (pH, transit time, and nutritional composition of ileal effluents) and microbial parameters from toddlers in the age range of 6 months-3 years, resulting in the Tm-ARCOL. In vitro fermentations were performed to validate this newly developed colonic model compared to in vivo toddler data. Results were also compared to those obtained with the classical adult configuration. Fecal samples from 5 toddlers and 4 adults were used to inoculate bioreactors, and continuous fermentations were performed for 8 days. Gut microbiota structure (lumen and mucus-associated microbiota) and functions (gas and short-chain fatty acids) were monitored. Clearly distinct microbial signatures were obtained between the two in vitro conditions, with lower α-diversity indices and higher abundances of infant-related microbial populations (e.g., Bifidobacteriaceae, Enterobacteriaceae) in toddler versus adult conditions. In accordance with in vivo data, methane was found only in adult bioreactors, while higher percentage of acetate but lower proportions of propionate and butyrate was measured in toddlers compared to adults. This new in vitro model will provide a powerful platform for gut microbiome mechanistic studies in a pediatric context, both in nutritional- (e.g., nutrients, probiotics, prebiotics) and health-related (e.g., drugs, enteric pathogens) studies. KEY POINTS: • Development of a novel in vitro colonic model recapitulating the toddler environment. • Specific toddler versus adult digestive conditions are preserved in vitro. • The new model provides a powerful platform for microbiome mechanistic studies.

Abstract: International audience; Tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes that incorporate a chloride ligand are promising photoluminescent materials, but those incorporating a bromide or iodide ligand have received very little attention regarding their solid-state properties. In this work, three rhenium(I) complexes differing only by the nature of their halide ligand (X = Cl, Br, and I) were compared. They are based on a fac-[ReX(CO)3(N^N)] framework where the N^N bidentate ligand is a 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole unit functionalized by an appended phenyl group. DFT calculations showed that the character of the lowest energy transitions progressively changes from Re → N^N ligand (MLCT) to X → N^N ligand (XLCT) when increasing the size of the halogen atom. Regarding the electrochemical behavior, the chloride and bromide complexes 1-Cl and 1-Br were similar, while the iodide complex 1-I exhibited a strikingly different electrochemical signature in oxidation. From a spectroscopic viewpoint, all three complexes emitted weak red–orange phosphorescence in dichloromethane solution. However, in the solid state, marked differences appeared. Not only was 1-Cl a good emitter of yellow light, but it had strong solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE) properties. In comparison, 1-Br and 1-I were less emissive and they showed better mechanoresponsive luminescence (MRL) properties, probably related to a loose molecular arrangement in the crystal packing and to the opening of vibrational non-radiative deactivation pathways. This study highlights for the first time how the nature of the halide ligand in this type of complex allows fine tuning of the solid-state optical properties, for potential applications either in bio-imaging or in the field of MRL-active materials.

Abstract: International audience; Lock-in and path-dependency are well-known concepts in economics dealing with unbalanced development of alternative options. Lock-in was studied in various sectors, considering production or consumption sides. Lock-in in academic research went little addressed. Yet, science develops through knowledge accumulation and cross-fertilisation of research topics, that could lead to similar phenomena when some topics do not sufficiently benefit from accumulation mechanisms, reducing innovation opportunities from the concerned field consequently. We introduce an original method to explore these phenomena by comparing topic trajectories in research fields according to strong or weak accumulative processes over time. We combine the concepts of ‘niche’ and ‘mainstream’ from transition studies with scientometric tools to revisit Callon’s strategic diagram with a diachronic perspective of topic clusters over time. Considering the trajectories of semantic clusters, derived from titles and authors’ keywords extracted from scholarly publications in the Web of Science, we applied our method to two competing research fields in food sciences and technology related to pulses and soya over the last 60 years worldwide. These highly interesting species for the sustainability of agrifood systems experienced unbalanced development and thus is under-debated. Our analysis confirms that food research for soya was more dynamic than for pulses: soya topic clusters revealed a stronger accumulative research path by cumulating mainstream positions while pulses research did not meet the same success. This attempt to unpack research lock-in for evaluating the competition dynamics of scientific fields over time calls for future works, by strengthening the method and testing it on other research fields.

Abstract: If Poincar{\'e} inequality has been studied by Bobkov for radial measures, few is known about the logarithmic Sobolev inequalty in the radial case. We try to fill this gap here using different methods: Bobkov's argument and super-Poincar{\'e} inequalities, direct approach via L1-logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. We also give various examples where the obtained bounds are quite sharp. Recent bounds obtained by Lee-Vempala in the logconcave bounded case are refined for radial measures.

Abstract: International audience; With the health problem, digital training has assumed a major role in our society. Some of the numerous online trainingopportunities are free, allowing the user to learn without having to pay, but occasionally we may question about the worth ofthese training opportunities—do they provide the same quality as the paid ones? Our two studies, which gathered informationfrom 245 and 114 individuals, demonstrates that a free course can have the same value and interest as a paid course and thatthe cost of an e-learning course does not always affect the value that the user attributes to it. We found that free training is animportant deciding factor because it provides the training with an advantage over the identical paid service that goes beyondsimple cost savings. As a result, free training may appear to the user to offer more overall benefits than expensive training.We also found that a price perceived as “a fair price” appear to the user as giving more benefits that an “expensive one”.

Abstract: International audience; Background Digital Volume correlation (DVC) consists in identifying the displacement fields that allow for the best possible registration of volume images of a sample captured at various loading stages. With cellular materials, the use of DVC faces an intrinsic limit: in the absence of an exploitable texture on (or in) the struts or cell walls, the available speckle pattern will unavoidably be formed by the material architecture itself. This leads to the inability of classical DVC techniques to measure kinematics below the cellular scale, i.e. at the sub-cellular or micro scales. Objective Here, we extend a newly developed architecture-driven DIC technique [1] for the measurement of 3D displacement fields in real cellular materials at the scale of the architecture. Methods The proposed solution consists in assisting DVC by a weak elastic regularization using, as support, an automatic finite-element image-based mechanical model. Results Complex (locally buckling) kinematics of a polyurethane foam under compression are accurately measured during an in-situ test. The method is essential to evidence the class of dominance (stretching versus bending) of the foam. Conclusions The proposed method allows to confirm that the foam used is bending-dominated, which is not possible with a classical mesoscopic DVC approach. This method is a good candidate for the analysis of complex local deformation mechanisms at the architecture scale.

Abstract: A comprehensive assessment of twenty-first century climate change in the European Alps is presented. The analysis is based on the EURO-CORDEX regional climate model ensemble available at two grid spacings (12.5 and 50 km) and for three different greenhouse gas emission scenarios (RCPs 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5). The core simulation ensemble has been subject to a dedicated evaluation exercise carried out in the frame of the CH2018 Climate Scenarios for Switzerland. Results reveal that the entire Alpine region will face a warmer climate in the course of the twenty-first century for all emission scenarios considered. Strongest warming is projected for the summer season, for regions south of the main Alpine ridge and for the high-end RCP 8.5 scenario. Depending on the season, medium to high elevations might experience an amplified warming. Model uncertainty can be considerable, but the major warming patterns are consistent across the ensemble. For precipitation, a seasonal shift of precipitation amounts from summer to winter over most parts of the domain is projected. However, model uncertainty is high and individual simulations can show change signals of opposite sign. Daily precipitation intensity is projected to increase in all seasons and all sub-domains, while the wet-day frequency will decrease in the summer season. The projected temperature change in summer is negatively correlated with the precipitation change, i.e. simulations and/or regions with a strong seasonal mean warming typically show a stronger precipitation decrease. By contrast, a positive correlation between temperature change and precipitation change is found for winter. Among other indicators, snow cover will be strongly affected by the projected climatic changes and will be subject to a widespread decrease except for very high elevation settings. In general and for all indicators, the magnitude of the change signals increases with the assumed greenhouse gas forcing, i.e., is smallest for RCP 2.6 and largest for RCP 8.5 with RCP 4.5 being located in between. These results largely agree with previous works based on older generations of RCM ensembles but, due to the comparatively large ensemble size and the high spatial resolution, allow for a more decent assessment of inherent projection uncertainties and of spatial details of future Alpine climate change., Climate Dynamics, 60 (1), ISSN:0930-7575, ISSN:1432-0894

Abstract: International audience; We introduce and study a class of entanglement criteria based on the idea of applying local contractions to an input multipartite state, and then computing the projective tensor norm of the output. More precisely, we apply to a mixed quantum state a tensor product of contractions from the Schatten class $S_1$ to the Euclidean space $\ell_2$, which we call entanglement testers. We analyze the performance of this type of criteria on bipartite and multipartite systems, for general pure and mixed quantum states, as well as on some important classes of symmetric quantum states. We also show that previously studied entanglement criteria, such as the realignment and the SIC POVM criteria, can be viewed inside this framework. This allows us to answer in the positive two conjectures of Shang, Asadian, Zhu, and G\"uhne by deriving systematic relations between the performance of these two criteria.

Abstract: On an asymptotically conical manifold we prove time decay estimates for the flow of the Schrödinger, wave and Klein-Gordon equations via some continuity properties of the spectral measure. To keep the paper at a reasonable length we limit ourselves to the low energy part of the spectrum, which is the one that dictates the decay rates. With this paper we extend sharp estimates that are known in the asymptotically flat case (see Bouclet and Burq in [BB21]) to this more general geometric framework and therefore recover the same decay properties as for the euclidean case. The first step is to prove some resolvent estimates via a limiting absorption principle. It is at this stage that the proof of the previously mentioned authors fails, in particular when we try to recover a low frequency positive commutator estimate. Once the resolvent estimates are established we derive regularity for the spectral measure that in turn is applied to obtain the decay of the flows.

Abstract: Identifying unequivocal signs of life on Mars is one of the most important objectives for sending missions to the red planet. Here we report Red Stone, a 163-100 My alluvial fan–fan delta that formed under arid conditions in the Atacama Desert, rich in hematite and mudstones containing clays such as vermiculite and smectites, and therefore geologically analogous to Mars. We show that Red Stone samples display an important number of microorganisms with an unusual high rate of phylogenetic indeterminacy, what we refer to as “dark microbiome”, and a mix of biosignatures from extant and ancient microorganisms that can be barely detected with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. Our analyses by testbed instruments that are on or will be sent to Mars unveil that although the mineralogy of Red Stone matches that detected by ground-based instruments on the red planet, similarly low levels of organics will be hard, if not impossible to detect in Martian rocks depending on the instrument and technique used. Abstract: The uncertainty principle is one of the fundamental features of quantum mechanics and plays a vital role in quantum information processing. We study uncertainty relations based on metric-adjusted skew information for finite quantum observables. Motivated by the paper [Physical Review A 104, 052414 (2021)], we establish tighter uncertainty relations in terms of different norm inequalities. Naturally, we generalize the method to uncertainty relations of metric-adjusted skew information for quantum channels and unitary operators. As both the Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information and the quantum Fisher information are the special cases of the metric-adjusted skew information corresponding to different Morozova-Chentsov functions, our results generalize some existing uncertainty relations. Abstract: International audience; We complete the kinetic theory of two-dimensional (2D) point vortices initiated in previous works. We use a simpler and more physical formalism. We consider a system of 2D point vortices submitted to a small external stochastic perturbation and determine the response of the system to the perturbation. We derive the diffusion coefficient and the drift by polarization of a test vortex. We introduce a general Fokker-Planck equation involving a diffusion term and a drift term. When the drift by polarization can be neglected, we obtain a secular dressed diffusion (SDD) equation sourced by the external noise. When the external perturbation is created by a discrete collection of N point vortices, we obtain a Lenard-Balescu-like kinetic equation reducing to a Landau-like kinetic equation when collective effects are neglected. We consider a multi-species system of point vortices. We discuss the process of kinetic blocking in the single and multi-species cases. When the field vortices are at statistical equilibrium (thermal bath), we establish the proper expression of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for 2D point vortices relating the power spectrum of the fluctuations to the response function of the system. In that case, the drift coefficient and the diffusion coefficient satisfy an Einstein-like relation and the Fokker Planck equation reduces to a Smoluchowski-like equation. We mention the analogy between 2D point vortices and stellar systems. In particular, the drift of a point vortex in 2D hydrodynamics is the counterpart of the Chandrasekhar dynamical friction in astrophysics. We also consider a gas of 2D Brownian point vortices described by N coupled stochastic Langevin equations and determine its mean and mesoscopic evolution. In the present paper, we treat the case of unidirectional flows but our results can be straightforwardly generalized to axisymmetric flows.

Abstract: Animal aggregation, particularly in large-bodied species, is both a fascinating and intriguing phenomenon. Here we analyzed the overwintering behavior of the European catfish, Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758, the largest freshwater fish in Europe. By tracking 47 subadults and adults in a shallow lake in southeastern France, we reported a consistent aggregative behavior across four successive winters. By implementing time series analysis and Cox proportional hazard models, we investigated the dynamics of these aggregations (formation, stability, dislocation), and the factors that govern it, whether external (temperature, time of the day) or specific to the fish (size, key individuals). These aggregations lasted 1.5–2 months and mainly took place in a single small 4 m-deep area whose environmental conditions (temperature, oxygen, substrate) did not differ from other parts of the lake. In some periods during winter, all tagged fish were aggregated, which suggests that a large proportion of the lake population gathered there. Low temperatures (below 9 °C) triggered the formation of aggregations. They became more stable with decreasing temperatures, while individuals more frequently left the aggregation, preferentially at dusk and at night, when temperatures increased. The largest individuals swam more frequently back and forth to the aggregation. Irrespective of their size, some individuals consistently arrived earlier in the aggregation in winter and left later. This predictable seasonal grouping of individuals and, more generally, the knowledge provided by such studies on how species use space have important operational value and are useful for species conservation as well as for species control.

Abstract: Since a decade, convection-permitting regional climate models (CPRCM) have emerged showing promising results, especially in improving the simulation of precipitation extremes. In this article, the CPRCM CNRM-AROME developed at the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM) since a few years is described and evaluated using a 2.5-km 19-year long hindcast simulation over a large northwestern European domain using different observations through an added-value analysis in which a comparison with its driving 12-km RCM CNRM-ALADIN is performed. The evaluation is challenging due to the lack of high-quality observations at both high temporal and spatial resolutions. Thus, a high spatio-temporal observed gridded precipitation dataset was built from the collection of seven national datasets that helped the identification of added value in CNRM-AROME. The evaluation is based on a series of standard climatic features that include long-term means and mean annual cycles of precipitation and near-surface temperature where CNRM-AROME shows little improvements compared to CNRM-ALADIN. Additional indicators such as the summer diurnal cycle and indices of extreme precipitation show, on the contrary, a more realistic behaviour of the CNRM-AROME model. Moreover, the analysis of snow cover shows a clear added-value in the CNRM-AROME simulation, principally due to the improved description of the orography with the CPRCM high resolution. Additional analyses include the evaluation of incoming shortwave radiation, and cloud cover using satellite estimates. Overall, despite some systematic biases, the evaluation indicates that CNRM-AROME is a suitable CPRCM that is superior in many aspects to the RCM CNRM-ALADIN.

Abstract: The carbon footprint of astronomical research is an increasingly topical issue with first estimates of research institute and national community footprints having recently been published. As these assessments have typically excluded the contribution of astronomical research infrastructures, we complement these studies by providing an estimate of the contribution of astronomical space missions and ground-based observatories using greenhouse gas emission factors that relates cost and payload mass to carbon footprint. We find that worldwide active astronomical research infrastructures currently have a carbon footprint of 20.3$\pm$3.3 MtCO$_2$ equivalent (CO$_2$e) and an annual emission of 1,169$\pm$249 ktCO$_2$e yr$^{-1}$ corresponding to a footprint of 36.6$\pm$14.0 tCO$_2$e per year per astronomer. Compared with contributions from other aspects of astronomy research activity, our results suggest that research infrastructures make the single largest contribution to the carbon footprint of an astronomer. We discuss the limitations and uncertainties of our method and explore measures that can bring greenhouse gas emissions from astronomical research infrastructures towards a sustainable level., Comment: 48 pages, 6 tables, 2 figures

Abstract: Cells that grow in confined spaces eventually build up mechanical compressive stress. This growth-induced pressure (GIP) decreases cell growth. GIP is important in a multitude of contexts from cancer[1–3], to microbial infections[4], to biofouling, yet our understanding of its origin and molecular consequences remains limited. Here, we combine microfluidic confinement of the yeast Saccha-romyces cerevisiae[5],with rheological measurements using genetically encoded multimeric nanoparticles (GEMs)[6] to reveal that growth-induced pressure is accompanied with an increase in a key cellular physical property: macromolecular crowding. We develop a fully calibrated model that predicts how increased macromolecular crowding hinders protein expression and thus diminishes cell growth. This model is sufficient to explain the coupling of growth rate to pressure without the need for specific molecular sensors or signaling cascades. As molecular crowding is similar across all domains of life, this could be a deeply conserved mechanism of biomechanical feedback that allows environmental sensing originating from the fundamental physical properties of cells.

Abstract: Let $D\subset \mathbb C^n$ be a bounded domain. A pair of distinct boundary points $\{p,q\}$ of $D$ has the visibility property provided there exist a compact subset $K_{p,q}\subset D$ and open neighborhoods $U_p$ of $p$ and $U_q$ of $q$, such that the real geodesics for the Kobayashi metric of $D$ which join points in $U_p$ and $U_q$ intersect $K_{p,q}$. Every Gromov hyperbolic convex domain enjoys the visibility property for any couple of boundary points. The Goldilocks domains introduced by Bharali and Zimmer and the log-type domains of Liu and Wang also enjoy the visibility property. In this paper we relate the growth of the Kobayashi distance near the boundary with visibility and provide new families of convex domains where that property holds. We use the same methods to provide refinements of localization results for the Kobayashi distance, and give a localized sufficient condition for visibility. Abstract: The identification of bacterial metabolites produced by the microbiota is a key point to understand its role in human health. Among them, lipo-amino acids (LpAA), which are able to cross the epithelial barrier and to act on the host, are poorly identified. Structural elucidation of few of them was performed by high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry based on electrospray combined with selective ion dissociations reach by collision-induced dissociation (CID). The negative ions were used for their advantages of yielding only few fragment ions sufficient to specify each part of LpAA with sensitivity. To find specific processes that help structural assignment, the negative ion dissociations have been scrutinized for an LpAA: the N-palmitoyl acyl group linked to glutamic acid (C16Glu). The singular behavior of [C16Glu-H]¯ towards CID showed tenth product ions, eight were described by expected fragment ions. In contrast, instead of the expected product ions due to CONH-CH bond cleavage, an abundant complementary dehydrated glutamic acid and fatty acid anion pair were observed. Specific to glutamic moiety, they were formed by a stepwise dissociation via molecular isomerization through ion–dipole formation prior to dissociation. This complex dissociated by partner splitting either directly or after inter-partner proton transfer. By this pathway, surprising regeneration of deprotonated fatty acid takes place. Such regeneration is comparable to that occurred from dissociation to peptides containing acid amino-acid. Modeling allow to confirm the proposed mechanisms explaining the unexpected behavior of this glutamate conjugate.

Abstract: Background Urogenital schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. In the Senegal river basin, the construction of the Diama dam led to an increase and endemicity of schistosomiasis. Since 2009, praziquantel has frequently been used as preventive chemotherapy in the form of mass administration to Senegalese school-aged children without monitoring of the treatment efficacy and the prevalence after re-infection. This study aims to determine the current prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis (caused by Schistosoma haematobium), the efficacy of praziquantel, and the re-infection rates in children from five villages with different water access. Methods The baseline prevalence of S. haematobium was determined in August 2020 in 777 children between 5 and 11 years old and a single dose of praziquantel (40 mg/kg) was administered to those positive. The efficacy of praziquantel and the re-infection rates were monitored 4 weeks and 7 months after treatment, respectively, in 226 children with a high intensity of infection at baseline. Results At the baseline, prevalence was low among children from the village of Mbane who live close to the Lac de Guiers (38%), moderate among those from the villages of Dioundou and Khodit, which neighbor the Doue river (46%), and very high at Khodit (90.6%) and Guia (91.2%) which mainly use an irrigation canal. After treatment, the observed cure rates confirmed the efficacy of praziquantel. The lowest cure rate (88.5%) was obtained in the village using the irrigation canal, while high cure rates were obtained in those using the lake (96.5%) and the river (98%). However, high egg reduction rates (between 96.7 and 99.7%) were obtained in all the villages. The re-infection was significantly higher in the village using the canal (42.5%) than in the villages accessing the Lac de Guiers (18.3%) and the Doue river (14.8%). Conclusion Praziquantel has an impact on reducing the prevalence and intensity of urogenital schistosomiasis. However, in the Senegal river basin, S. haematobium remains a real health problem for children living in the villages near the irrigation canals, despite regular treatment, while prevalence is declining from those frequenting the river and the Lac de Guiers. Abstract: Important discrepancies in the large-scale summer climate change projections were recently detected between the global and regional climate models (RCM/GCM) in the EURO-CORDEX ensemble for several variables including surface temperature, total precipitation, and surface solar radiation. In this study, we use a new experimental framework inspired by the Big-Brother-Little-Brother protocol to explore the mechanisms responsible for generating large-scale discrepancies in future projections between GCM/RCM pairs over Europe in summer. Starting from past and future simulations with a perfect GCM/RCM pair (same resolution, same physics, same forcings), we then disentangle the role of potential sources of GCM/RCM inconsistency by carrying out targeted sensitivity studies. We show that by following such a perfect approach, it is possible to obtain a GCM/RCM pair without statistically significant inconsistencies in projected climate change. Such discrepancies are mainly generated by differences in aerosols representation and atmospheric physics. The role of plant physiology is limited and unlikely to be the dominant factor in the detected discrepancies. Finally, it is unlikely that the discrepancies in the EURO-CORDEX ensemble projections are a result of the upscaled added value, as we show that the effect of increased resolution is not strong enough and mostly limited to areas with complex topography. These findings raise important questions about the current practices in regional climate modelling. In the short term, implementing RCM external forcings consistent with the driving GCM can significantly improve the situation at low cost. In the long term, adopting a seamless strategy in developing the GCM/RCM models should be questioned.

Abstract: Although global warming is expected to occur at approximately constant relative humidity, the latest IPCC report remains elusive about the magnitude of observed changes in tropospheric humidity and their attribution. Here we use a quality-controlled dataset of in situ observations, global reanalyses, and a long record of global mean surface temperature to constrain both recent and future changes in global mean total precipitable water. Most state-of-the-art global climate models tend to exaggerate the projected atmospheric moistening, in line with their overestimation of global warming and of the sensitivity of atmospheric humidity to both anthropogenic greenhouse gases and aerosols across the 20th century. A 39% narrowing in the range of the projections is obtained after applying the observational constraints, with a best-guess estimate of + 7% per °C of global warming. This finding provides further evidence of a substantial intensification of the global water cycle as long as global warming continues.

Abstract: Stable isotopes of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen are used to investigate numerous physical and chemical processes in the water and inorganic carbon cycles. Measuring and comparing natural isotopic variations requires reliable primary reference materials and consistent data treatment. However, these reference materials have changed over time, while advances in technology have led to better constrained isotopic compositions of the reference materials. In this Technical Review, we provide an overview of the historical evolution of such materials, and explain their relationships across time and isotopic scales. Recommendations are provided for the measurement and reporting of isotopic compositions against the consensual VPDB and VSMOW scales in light of the newest carbonate and water reference materials distributed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Stable isotope fractionation factors and their temperature dependence in processes specific to the water cycle (2H, 18O, 17O) and the CO2–water–carbonate system (13C, 18O) are described, including for carbonate clumped isotope thermometry. Propagation of errors is also addressed for a consistent reporting of real uncertainties of isotopic measurements and calculations. Lastly, current gaps in knowledge on the behaviour of stable isotopes in the water cycle and the CO2–water–carbonate system are highlighted for future studies. The use of isotopes has provided key insights into the Earth system, but their use can be fraught with experimental and theoretical pitfalls. This Technical Review explains the use of and fractionation factors associated with hydrogen, carbon and oxygen isotopes in water cycle and CO2–carbonate–water system studies.

Abstract: We developed a new hybrid material resulting from an innovative supramolecular tripartite association between an ionic liquid covalently immobilized on primary β-cyclodextrins rim and an anionic water-soluble polymer. Two hydrophilic ternary complexes based on native and permethylated β-cyclodextrins substituted with an ionic liquid and immobilized on poly(styrene sulfonate) (CD-IL+PSS− and CD(OMe)IL+PSS−) were obtained by simple dialysis with a cyclodextrin maximal grafting rate of 25% and 20% on the polymer, respectively. These polyelectrolytes are based on electrostatic interactions between the opposite charges of the imidazolium cation of the ionic liquid and the poly(styrene sulfonate) anion. The inclusion properties of the free cavities of the cyclodextrins and the synergic effect of the polymeric matrix were studied with three reference guests such as phenolphthalein, p-nitrophenol, and 2-anilinonaphthalene-6-sulfonic acid using UV-visible, fluorescent, and NMR spectroscopies. The support has been applied successfully in dialysis device to extract and concentrated aromatic model molecule. This simple and flexible synthetic strategy opens the way to new hybrid materials useful for fast and low-cost ecofriendly extraction techniques relevant for green analytical chemistry.

Abstract: International audience; Ti-stabilized austenitic stainless steel was carburized in sodium containing a high carbon activity at three different temperatures, 500 °C, 600 °C, and 650 °C during 1000 hours and 5000 hours. The carbon profile, the carbide volume fraction, and the lattice parameter evolution as function of depth were determined using high-energy X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. At 650 °C and 600 °C, the carbon precipitated as M23C6 and M7C3 carbides in the sample. The volume fraction of M7C3 carbides was lower than predicted by thermodynamic equilibrium using Thermo-Calc software®. At 500 °C, carbides almost did not form in the steel. Instead, high carbon supersaturation of the austenitic matrix occurred. Both results demonstrate that the carburization profile was strongly influenced by the kinetics of carbide formation at temperatures lower than 650 °C. High-energy X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated that the austenite and carbide lattice parameters evolved along the carbon profile. Both measured lattice parameter profiles of austenite and M23C6 carbide were compared to the ones predicted from chemical changes of austenite and carbides.

Abstract: International audience; The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has killed many people, particularly if they were very old or obese. These people are at risk to die in the event of an outbreak, like babies were at risk to die from various diseases one century ago. It is argued that mild stress could help to resist new outbreaks. This requires that obese people, because of bad feeding and activity habits, make the effort to stop snacking, junk food and overfeeding, and become more active. Because an inactive way of life at old age can increase frailty, physical and mental activities should be kept at the highest possible level in elderly people, particularly if they live in retirement homes. In the event of an outbreak, management staff of these homes should not confine residents in their room for weeks or months, as it can increase inactivity, under-nutrition, sarcopenia, and depressive symptoms. People with or without co-morbidities should be active and one could wonder whether other mild stresses such as sauna bathing could help to better resist infection.

Abstract: International audience; Tasks such as analysis, design optimization, and uncertainty quantification can be computationally expensive. Surrogate modeling is often the tool of choice for reducing the burden associated with such data-intensive tasks. However, even after years of intensive research, surrogate modeling still involves a struggle to achieve maximum accuracy within limited resources. This work summarizes various advanced, yet often straightforward, statistical tools that help. We focus on four techniques with increasing popularity in the surrogate modeling community: (i) variable screening and dimensionality reduction in both the input and the output spaces, (ii) data sampling techniques or design of experiments, (iii) simultaneous use of multiple surrogates, and (iv) sequential sampling. We close the paper with some suggestions for future research.

Abstract: A method for infering bed topography beneath glaciers from surface measurements (elevation from altimetry and velocity from InSAR) and sparse thickness measurements is developed and evaluated. The method is based on an original non-isothermal Reduced Uncertainty (RU) version of the Shallow Ice Approximation (SIA) equation that natively incorporates the surface measurements. The flow model has a single dimensionless multi-physics parameter γ. This parameter takes into account the basal slipperiness and the variable vertical rate factor profiles, thus the vertical thermal variations. The inversions are based on three steps involving: an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and two Variational Data Assimilation (VDA) processes. The ANN-based stage aims at estimating the multi-physics number γ from the thickness measurements; the resulting estimator is remarkably robust. The full inversion method is valid for half-sheared flows (presenting a moderate basal slipperiness): it can be applied to inland ice-sheets areas. Also these estimates connect continuously with estimates from mass conservation only, i.e. with areas of sliding flows. Numerical results are presented for areas of the East Antarctica Ice Sheet where bed elevation can be very uncertain (Bedmap2 values). Estimates are valid for wavelengths longer than $\sim 10 \bar h$ (due to the long wave assumption, shallow flow model) with resolution at $\sim \bar h$ ( $\bar h$ a characteristic thickness value).

Abstract: International audience; The paradigm of Sahelian desertification, whose roots lie in the colonial period, increased in popularity following the droughts of the 1970s and 1980s. This "desertification narrative" was shaped in the international arena by organizations working in the fields of international cooperation, human rights, regional development, economic regulation and environmental questions. This narrative has been deployed to have real-world implications of how risks and responses in the Sahel are understood and prioritised, with particularly tangible implications for civil society and international donor agencies. It is indeed widely used in technical writings, general public media and environmental protection projects, regardless of the fact that the majority of literature in environmental science does not support its underlying rationales. It depicts rural populations as victims and culprits (or villains) partially responsible for the desertification, which in turn justifies external intervention in the Sahelian countries. The desertification narrative has an impact on research and development funding by overemphasizing the role of international development aid to combat desertification, thus favoring research on the subject of Sahelian desertification. Furthermore, we argue that the Sahelian desertification narrative contributes to the political control of rural populations, the latter being stigmatized because of their often-considered excessive use of environmental resources.

Abstract: International audience; The database presented in this study has been acquired during the SOuth west FOGs 3D (SOFOG3D) experiment for processes study. This international campaign led by Météo-France during the winter 2019-2020 aimed at deploying a unique network of both in situ and remote sensing measurements in order to document spatial and temporal variabilities of fog events. To support this scientific objective but also to conduct first data assimilation experiments within the French convective scale model AROME, an unprecedented network of 8 ground-based microwave radiometers (MWR) has been deployed in 7 different locations known to be prone to fog occurrences. The database gives access to vertical profiles of temperature and humidity (both absolute and relative) from the surface up to 10 km altitude as well as integrated water vapor and liquid water path estimates. The retrieved profiles offer a very large database that can be exploited for several scientific purposes: fog process studies at specific location, documentation on the variability of fog properties at the regional scale, better understanding of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) height and dynamics during wintertime conditions, development of nowcasting products dedicated to fog alerts, data assimilation experiments to improve fog forecasts, development of synergetical advanced products, and evaluation of new model configurations with advanced parameterization or resolutions. Abstract: We study stability of the spectral gap and observable diameter for metricmeasure spaces satisfying the RCD(1, $\infty$) condition. We show that if such a space has an almost maximal spectral gap, then it almost contains a Gaussian component, and the Laplacian has eigenvalues that are close to any integers, with dimension-free quantitative bounds. Under the additional assumption that the space admits a needle disintegration, we show that the spectral gap is almost maximal iff the observable diameter is almost maximal, again with quantitative dimension-free bounds.

Abstract: The observed global net land carbon sink is captured by current land models. All models agree that atmospheric CO2 and nitrogen deposition driven gains in carbon stocks are partially offset by climate and land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) losses. However, there is a lack of consensus in the partitioning of the sink between vegetation and soil, where models do not even agree on the direction of change in carbon stocks over the past 60 years. This uncertainty is driven by plant productivity, allocation, and turnover response to atmospheric CO2 (and to a smaller extent to LULCC), and the response of soil to LULCC (and to a lesser extent climate). Overall, differences in turnover explain ~70% of model spread in both vegetation and soil carbon changes. Further analysis of internal plant and soil (individual pools) cycling is needed to reduce uncertainty in the controlling processes behind the global land carbon sink.

Phylogeography of the native area profoundly shapes the genomic patterns of the propagules on which subsequent demographic processes of the invasion are based. Thus, a better understanding of this aspect helps to disentangle native and invasive histories. Here, we used genomic data together with clustering methods, explicit admixture tests combined with ABC models and Machine Learning algorithms, to compare patterns of genetic structure and gene flow of native and introduced populations, and infer the most likely invasion pathways of the highly invasive freshwater fish Pseudorasbora parva. This species is the vector of a novel lethal fungal-like pathogen (Sphaerothecum destruens) that is responsible for the decline of several fish species in Europe. We found that the current genetic structuring in the native range of P. parva has been shaped by waves of gene flow from populations in southern and northern China. Furthermore, our results strongly suggest that the genetic diversity of invasive populations results from recurrent global invasion pathways of admixed native populations. Our study also illustrates how the combination of admixture tests, ABC and Machine Learning can be used to detect high-resolution demographic signatures and reconstruct an integrative biological invasion history.

Abstract: In this paper, mixed categorical structural optimization problems are investigated. The aim is to minimize the weight of a truss structure with respect to cross-section areas, materials and cross-section type. The proposed methodology consists of using a bi-level decomposition involving two problems: master and slave. The master problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear problem where the linear constraints are incrementally augmented using outer approximations of the slave problem solution. The slave problem addresses the continuous variables of the optimization problem. The proposed methodology is tested on three different structural optimization test cases with increasing complexity. The comparison to state-of-the-art algorithms emphasizes the efficiency of the proposed methodology in terms of the optimum quality, computation cost, as well as its scalability with respect to the problem dimension. A challenging 120-bar dome truss optimization problem with 90 categorical choices per bar is also tested. Abstract: Uranium nitrides play important roles in dinitrogen activation and functionalization and in chemistry for nuclear fuels, but the synthesis and isolation of the highly reactive uranium(VI) nitrides remains challenging. Here, we report an example of transition metal (TM) stabilized U(VI) nitride complexes, which are generated by the photolysis of azide-bridged U(IV)-TM (TM = Rh, Ir) precursors. The U(V) nitride intermediates with bridged azide ligands are isolated successfully by careful control of the irradiation time, suggesting that the photolysis of azide-bridged U(IV)-TM precursors is a stepwise process. The presence of two U(VI) nitrides stabilized by three TMs is clearly demonstrated by an X-ray crystallographic study. These TM stabilized U(V) nitride intermediates and U(VI) nitride products exhibit excellent stability both in the solid-state and in THF solution under ambient light. Density functional theory calculations show that the photolysis necessary to break the N-N bond of the azide ligands implies excitation from uranium f-orbital to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), as suggested by the strong antibonding N-(N2) character present in the latter.

Abstract: The impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the late-winter extra-tropical stratosphere (January–March) is assessed in a multi-model framework. Three state-of-the-art atmospheric models are run with prescribed SST anomalies representative of a strong ENSO event, with symmetric patterns for El Niño and La Niña. The well-known temperature perturbation in the lower stratosphere during El Niño is captured by two models, in which the anomalous warming at polar latitudes is accompanied by a positive geopotential height anomaly that extends over the polar cap. In the third model, which shows a lack of temperature anomalies over the pole, the anomalous anticyclone is confined over Canada and does not expand to the polar cap. This anomalous center of action emerges from the large-scale tropospheric Rossby wave train forced by ENSO, and shrinking/stretching around the polar vortex is invoked to link it to the temperature response. No disagreement across models is found in the lower stratosphere for La Niña, whose teleconnection is opposite in sign but weaker. In the middle-upper stratosphere (above 50 hPa) the geopotential height anomalies project on a wavenumber-1 (WN1) pattern for both El Niño and, more weakly, La Niña, and show a westward tilt with height up to the stratopause. It is suggested that this WN1 pattern arises from the high-latitude lower-stratospheric anomalies, and that the ENSO teleconnection to the polar stratosphere can be interpreted in terms of upward propagation of the stationary Rossby wave train and quasi-geostrophic balance, instead of wave breaking. Abstract: International audience; The Paleogene record of caviomorph rodents has substantially increased over the last decades, and their evolutionary history better understood by the discovery of their earliest representatives, so far recorded in several pre-Deseadan localities in Peruvian Amazonia. We report here the discovery of new caviomorph fossils from the Balsayacu area in Peru (TAR-55/TAR-55bis, TAR-76 and TAR-77 localities, San Martín Department). The study of this new material reveals the occurrence of four caviomorph taxa in these localities: Balsayacuy huallagaensis gen. et sp. nov., Chachapoyamys kathetos gen. et sp. nov. and Caviomorpha gen. et sp. indet. 1 and 2. It allows the revision and refinement of taxonomic assignments of previously described specimens. The first three taxa have a primitive dental pattern, as that characterizing stem Caviomorpha recorded in pre-Deseadan localities of Peru (Eocene localities of Contamana and ?late Eocene/early Oligocene Santa Rosa). We support here an Eocene age for the Balsayacu section due to the complete absence of morphologically derived taxa representing modern caviomorph superfamilies. By the presence of derived characters in Balsayacuy and Chachapoyamys compared to Canaanimys maquiensis and Cachiyacuy contamanensis from CTA-27 (Contamana, Peru; late middle Eocene), the Balsayacu section may document a time interval slightly younger than CTA-27 (which further yields Chachapoyamys cf. kathetos) and older than those of Santa Rosa and Tarapoto-Shapaja, likely documenting latest middle or early late Eocene times. These low-latitude stem caviomorph faunas provide new insights into the early evolutionary history and paleodiversity of that group immediately before the rise of modern superfamilies.

Abstract: International audience; Fluid–mineral and fluid–rock interfaces are key parameters controlling the reactivity and fate of fluids in reservoir rocks and aquifers. The interface dynamics through space and time results from complex processes involving a tight coupling between chemical reactions and transport of species as well as a strong dependence on the physical, chemical, mineralogical and structural properties of the reacting solid phases. In this article, we review the recent advances in pore-scale imaging and reactive flow modelling applied to interface dynamics. Digital rocks derived from time-lapse X-ray micro-tomography imaging gives unprecedented opportunity to track the interface evolution during reactive flow experiments in porous or fractured media, and evaluate locally mineral reactivity. The recent improvements in pore-scale reactive transport modelling allow for a fine description of flow and transport that integrates moving fluid–mineral interfaces inherent to chemical reactions. Combined with three-dimensional digital images, pore-scale reactive transport modelling complements and augments laboratory experiments. The most advanced multi-scale models integrate sub-voxel porosity and processes which relate to imaging instrument resolution and improve upscaling possibilities. Two example applications based on the solver porousMedia4Foam illustrate the dynamics of the interface for different transport regimes (i.e., diffusive- to advective-dominant) and rock matrix properties (i.e., permeable vs. impermeable, and homogeneous vs. polymineralic). These parameters affect both the interface roughness and its geometry evolution, from sharp front to smeared (i.e., diffuse) interface. The paper concludes by discussing the challenges associated with precipitation processes in porous media, rock texture and composition (i.e., physical and mineralogical heterogeneity), and upscaling to larger scales.

Abstract: The main concern of this article is to investigate the boundary controllability of some $$2\times 2$$ one-dimensional parabolic systems with both the interior and boundary couplings: The interior coupling is chosen to be linear with constant coefficient while the boundary one is considered by means of some Kirchhoff-type condition at one end of the domain. We consider here the Dirichlet boundary control acting only on one of the two state components at the other end of the domain. In particular, we show that the controllability properties change depending on which component of the system the control is being applied. Regarding this, we point out that the choices of the interior coupling coefficient and the Kirchhoff parameter play a crucial role to deduce the positive or negative controllability results. Further to this, we pursue a numerical study based on the well-known penalized HUM approach. We make some discretization for a general interior-boundary coupled parabolic system, mainly to incorporate the effects of the boundary couplings into the discrete setting. This allows us to illustrate our theoretical results as well as to experiment some more examples which fit under the general framework, for instance a similar system with a Neumann boundary control on either one of the two components.

Abstract: We consider the drift-diffusion equation $$\begin{aligned} u_t-\varepsilon \varDelta u+\nabla \cdot (u\ \nabla K*u)=0 \end{aligned}$$ in the whole space with global-in-time solutions bounded in all Sobolev spaces; for simplicity, we restrict ourselves to the model case $$K(x)=-|x|$$ . We quantify the mass concentration phenomenon, a genuinely nonlinear effect, for radially symmetric solutions of this equation for small diffusivity $$\varepsilon $$ studied in our previous paper (Biler et al. in J Differ Equ 271:1092–1108, 2021), obtaining sharp upper and lower bounds for Sobolev norms.

Abstract: Lithographically defined arrays of nanomagnets are well placed for application in areas such as probabilistic computing or reconfigurable magnonics due to their emergent collective dynamics and writable magnetic order. Among them are artificial spin ice (ASI), which are arrays of binary in-plane macrospins exhibiting geometric frustration at the vertex interfaces. Macrospin flips in the arrays create topologically protected magnetic charges, or emergent monopoles, which are bound to an antimonopole to conserve charge. In the absence of controllable pinning, it is difficult to manipulate individual monopoles in the array without also influencing other monopole excitations or the counter-monopole charge. Here, we tailor the local magnetic order of a classic ASI lattice by introducing a ferromagnetic defect with shape anisotropy into the array. This creates monopole injection sites at nucleation fields below the critical lattice switching field. Once formed, the high energy monopoles are fixed to the defect site and may controllably propagate through the lattice under stimulation. Defect programing of bound monopoles within the array allows fine control of the pathways of inverted macrospins. Such control is a necessary prerequisite for the realization of functional devices, e. g. reconfigurable waveguide in nanomagnonic applications.

Abstract: Introduction Stable isotope tracer studies are increasingly applied to explore metabolism from the detailed analysis of tracer incorporation into metabolites. Untargeted LC/MS approaches have recently emerged and provide potent methods for expanding the dimension and complexity of the metabolic networks that can be investigated. A number of software tools have been developed to process the highly complex MS data collected in such studies; however, a method to optimize the extraction of valuable isotopic data is lacking. Objectives To develop and validate a method to optimize automated data processing for untargeted MS-based isotopic tracing investigations of metabolism. Methods The method is based on the application of a suitable reference material to rationally perform parameter optimization throughout the complete data processing workflow. It was applied in the context of 13C-labelling experiments and with two different software, namely geoRge and X13CMS. It was illustrated with the study of a E. coli mutant impaired for central metabolism. Results The optimization methodology provided significant gain in the number and quality of extracted isotopic data, independently of the software considered. Pascal triangle samples are well suited for such purpose since they allow both the identification of analytical issues and optimization of data processing at the same time. Conclusion The proposed method maximizes the biological value of untargeted MS-based isotopic tracing investigations by revealing the full metabolic information that is encoded in the labelling patterns of metabolites.

Abstract: The predicted increase in the intensity and frequency of drought events associated with global climate change will impose severe hydrological stress to freshwater ecosystems, potentially altering their structure and function. Unlike freshwater communities’ direct response to drought, their post-drought recovery capacities remain understudied despite being an essential component driving ecosystem resilience. Here we used tank bromeliad as model ecosystem to emulate droughts of different duration and then assess the recovery capacities of ecosystem structure and function. We followed macroinvertebrate predator and prey biomass to characterize the recovery dynamics of trophic structure (i.e. predator–prey biomass ratio) during the post-drought rewetting phase. We showed that drought significantly affects the trophic structure of macroinvertebrates by reducing the predator–prey biomass ratio. The asynchronous recovery of predator and prey biomass appeared as a critical driver of the post-drought recovery trajectory of trophic structure. Litter decomposition rate, which is an essential ecosystem function, remained stable after drought events, indicating the presence of compensatory effects between detritivores biomass and detritivores feeding activity. We conclude that, in a context of global change, the asynchrony in post-drought recovery of different trophic levels may impact the overall drought resilience of small freshwater ecosystems in a more complex way than expected.
