The variability and interdependence of local porosity and local mean geodesic tortuosity, which is a measure for the sinuosity of shortest transportation paths, is investigated at the example of the microstructure in sack paper. By means of statistical image analysis, these two morphological characteristics are computed for several cutouts of 3D image data obtained by X-ray microcomputed tomography. Considering cutouts of different sizes allows us to study the influence of the sample size on the local variability of the considered characteristics. Moreover, the interdependence between local porosity and local mean geodesic tortuosity is quantified by modeling their joint distribution parametrically using Archimedean copulas. It turns out that the family of Gumbel copulas is an appropriate model type, which is formally validated by a goodness of fit test. Besides mean geodesic tortuosity, we consider further related morphological characteristics, describing the sinuosity of those shortest transportation paths, whose minimum diameter exceeds a predefined threshold. Moreover, we show that the copula approach investigated in this paper can also be used to quantify the negative correlation between local porosity and these modified versions of local mean geodesic tortuosity. Our results elucidate the impact of local porosity on various kinds of morphological characteristics, which are not experimentally accessible and which are important for local air permeance – a key property of sack paper.

Let a(n) be the Fourier coefficient of a holomorphic cusp form on some discrete subgroup of \(SL_2({\mathbb R})\). This note is to refine a recent result of Hofmann and Kohnen on the non-positive (resp. non-negative) product of \(a(n)a(n+r)\) for a fixed positive integer r.

We indicate how recent results of Grafakos and Teschl (J Fourier Anal Appl 19:167–179, 2013), and Estrada (J Fourier Anal Appl 20:301–320, 2014), relating the Fourier transform of a radial function in $$\mathbb R^n$$ and the Fourier transform of the same function in $$\mathbb R^{n+2}$$ and $$\mathbb R^{n+1}$$ , respectively, are located within known results on transplantation for Hankel transforms.

An error has been detected (and also corrected) in Theorem 2.8 of the paper entitled “Adjoining an Order Unit to a Matrix Ordered Space” (Positivity, (2005)9: 207–223; DOI 10.1007/s11117-003-2778-5). Accordingly, some of the results of the paper have been modified. Also, a notion of C*-matricially, Riesz normed spaces has been introduced.

The authors of [KMM] consider a system of two functional inequalities for a function $$f : {\mathbb{R}} \rightarrow {\mathbb{R}}$$ , and they show that, if certain arithmetical conditions and inequalities for certain parameters are fulfilled, f has to be a polynomial provided that f is continuous at some point x0. This result is derived here under the weaker condition that for some x0 the limit $${\rm lim}_{x \rightarrow x_0} f(x)$$ exists. Moreover, another system of inequalities is given leading to the same result on the nature of f. The methods used also give natural explanations for the fact that Bernoulli numbers play an important role in this context.

We considered in Example 3.1 of the paper [1] an S-structure on R2n+s . We concluded that when s > 1 this manifold cannot be of constant φ-sectional curvature. Unfortunately this result is wrong. In fact, essentially due to a sign mistake in defining the φ-structure and a consequent transposition of the elements of the φ-basis (3.2), some of the Christoffel’s symbols were incorrect. In the present rectification, using a more slendler tecnique, we prove that our manifold is of constant φ-sectional curvature −3s and then it is η-Einstein.

In the paper [1], the authors obtain a KAM theorem for nearly integrable hamiltonian systems under the Russmann’s non-degeneracy condition, which is known to be sharpest one for small divisor conditions. However, the Remark 1.3 is wrong because we have ignored the null set − ∗, which may contain zeros of ω of high order such that (1.4) does not hold for all p ∈ . The Remark 1.3 might mislead the readers that the condition (1.5) of Theorem B is equivalent to the Russmann’s non-degeneracy condition. Actually, the Russmann’s non-degeneracy condition is equivalent to the condition (1.4) of Theorem A as proved in [1]. Under the Russmann’s non-degeneracy condition (1.4), as proved in the Remark 3.1 the condition (1.5) holds if we replace n − 1 by a sufficiently large number N depending on h, and then the conclusion of Theorem B remains valid if in the measure estimate n − 1 is replaced by N .

This paper deals with Schrodinger operators as they were treated by Kato - Ikebe [3]. It is shown that every element of the domain of definition of the adjoint of such an operator has locally square integrable distributional derivatives up to the order 2. For this the potential of the Schrodinger operator must fulfil a local Stummel condition; if the potential is only locally square integrable a somewhat weaker statement is possible for three dimensions (see remark 2 at the end of this paper).

This paper presents a review of the elementary theories on the bending of straight and curved beams, on plates and shells, using asymptotic approximations of the basic linearized equations of elasticity in three dimensions. The maximun norm has been chosen to specify the orders of magnitude of the quantities involved. The expansions are given as usual in terms of the small geometrical parameter characterizing the thinness of the structure. Most of the ideas and results are well known. Nevertheless, in the cases where more than one small parameter may be involved, such as small curvatures (shallow structures) or the small loading parameter used to linearize the equations of elasticity, the discussion on the limits of validity of the different theories lead to some interesting newer aspects. Moreover, the main ideas presented in this paper concerning multiple parameter expansions may be applied to discuss the behaviour of the structures and to obtain valuable analytical results in more complicated situations such as moderate and strong anisotropy, dynamic problems, stability etc.

The dynamic response of an infinite, elastic plate to a steadily moving transverse force is studied under the so-called improved plate theory. Analytic solutions for the subsonic and the intersonic cases are obtained using the method of integral transforms. The usual difficulty of the nonuniqueness of the steady-state solutions is circumvented by formulating the problems as initial value problems and then seeking the large time limits of the solutions of such initial value problems. The subsonic and intersonic solutions obtained here are similar to that obtained previously for the supersonic case. However, in contrast with the supersonic solution, which contains two families of Mach lines, the subsonic solution contains no Mach lines and the intersonic solution contains only one family of Mach lines.

It was shown by F. Wilhelm that Gromov’s filling radius of any positively curved closed Riemannian manifolds are less than that of the round sphere unless they are isometric to each other. In this short paper, we adapt his proof to see that the same is true for any positively curved closed Alexandrov spaces as well.

A recent note of Ih-Ching Hsu poses an unsolved problem, to wit, the general solution of the functional equation g(x1, x2) + g(φ1(x1), φ2(x2)) = g(x1, φ2(x2)) + g(φ1(x1),x2), where the φi are given functions. This short paper obtains the general solution. It gives conditions which imply that anycontinuous solution has form g1(x1) + g2(x2).

This paper is devoted to the study of the qualitative properties of solutions to boundary-value problems for strongly elliptic differential-difference equations. Some results for these equations such as existence and smoothness of generalized solutions in certain subdomains of Q were obtained earlier. Nevertheless, the smoothness of generalized solutions of such problems can be violated near the boundary of these subdomains even for infinitely differentiable right-hand side. The subdomains are defined as connected components of the set that is obtained from the domain Q by throwing out all possible shifts of the boundary Q by vectors of a certain group generated by shifts occurring in the difference operators. For the one dimensional Neumann problem for differential-difference equations there were obtained conditions on the coefficients of difference operators, under which for any continuous right-hand side there is a classical solution of the problem that coincides with the generalized solution. 2 Also there was obtained the smoothness (in Sobolev spaces W k ) of generalized solutions of the second and the third boundary-value problems for strongly elliptic differential-difference equations in subdomains excluding -neighborhoods of certain points. However, the smoothness (in Ho lder spaces) of generalized solutions of the second boundary-value problem for strongly elliptic differential-difference equations on the boundary of adjacent subdomains was not considered. In this paper, we study this question in Ho lder spaces. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the coefficients of difference operators that guarantee smoothness of the generalized solution on the boundary of adjacent subdomains for any right-hand side from the Ho lder space.

This paper deals with a version of the two-timing method which describes various ‘slow’ effects caused by externally imposed ‘fast’ oscillations. Such small oscillations are often called vibrations and the research area can be referred as vibrodynamics. The governing equations represent a generic system of first-order ODEs containing a prescribed oscillating velocity $${\varvec{u}}$$ , given in a general form. Two basic small parameters stand in for the inverse frequency and the ratio of two time-scales; they appear in equations as regular perturbations. The proper connections between these parameters yield the distinguished limits, leading to the existence of closed systems of asymptotic equations. The aim of this paper is twofold: (i) to clarify (or to demystify) the choices of a slow variable, and (ii) to give a coherent exposition which is accessible for practical users in applied mathematics, sciences and engineering. We focus our study on the usually hidden aspects of the two-timing method such as the uniqueness or multiplicity of distinguished limits and universal structures of averaged equations. The main result is the demonstration that there are two (and only two) different distinguished limits. The explicit instruction for practically solving ODEs for different classes of $${\varvec{u}}$$ is presented. The key roles of drift velocity and the qualitatively new appearance of the linearized equations are discussed. To illustrate the broadness of our approach, two examples from mathematical biology are shown.

In this paper, we consider the Laplace operator in a flat band whose lower boundary periodically oscillates under the Dirichlet boundary condition. The period and the amplitude of oscillations are two independent small parameters. The main result obtained in the paper is the absence of internal lacunas in the lower part of the spectrum of the operator for sufficiently small period and amplitude. We obtain explicit upper estimates of the period and amplitude in the form of constraints with specific numerical constants. The length of the lower part of the spectrum, in which the absence of lacunas is guaranteed, is also expressed explicitly in terms of the period function and the amplitude.

This paper deals with a class of nonlinear Mathieu fractional differential equations. The reported results discuss the existence, uniqueness and stability for the solution of proposed equation. We prove the main results by the aid of fixed point theorems and Ulam’s approach. The paper is appended with two applications that describe the force of periodic pendulum and the motion of a particle in the plane. Graphical representations are used to illustrate the results.

In this paper, we consider a version of energy minimisation technique applied to images of a 2D fluid flow. The two Navier–Stokes equations describe the static flow of a 2D fluid in terms of velocity field, (u, v), pressure field, p and forcing field, f. Apart from these two Navier–Stokes equations, we have the incompressibility condition to evaluate the three parameters. While implementing this system, random noise (usually non-Gaussian) creeps into the random force field $$\underline{f}(x,y)$$ f ̲ ( x , y ) . We denote this random field by $$\delta \underline{f}(x,y)$$ δ f ̲ ( x , y ) having zero mean and non-trivial second and third moments. We assume that these two moments are known except for some unknown parameters $$\underline{\theta }$$ θ ̲ (like mean, variance, co-variance, skewness, etc.) which we wish to estimate. In the proposed technique, we first calculate the approximate shift in the average fluid energy defined as a quadratic function of the velocity field. The energy method then requires that $$\underline{\theta }$$ θ ̲ should be such that this average increases in the energy due to the random forcing component be minimised. We should, however, note that the standard statistical approach to force field estimation is to calculate the velocity field as a function of the force field and then adopt the statistical moment matching technique. Such an approach assumes spatial ergodicity of the velocity field. This approach to force field estimation is more accurate from the statistical moment matching view point but works only if velocity measurements are made. The former technique of energy minimisation does not require any velocity measurements. Both of these techniques are discussed in this paper and MATLAB simulations presented.

In order to construct global solutions to two-dimensional (2D for short) Riemann problems for nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, it is important to study various types of wave interactions. This paper deals with two types of wave interactions for a 2D nonlinear wave system with a nonconvex equation of state: Rarefaction wave interaction and shock-rarefaction composite wave interaction. In order to construct solutions to these wave interactions, the authors consider two types of Goursat problems, including standard Goursat problem and discontinuous Goursat problem, for a 2D self-similar nonlinear wave system. Global classical solutions to these Goursat problems are obtained by the method of characteristics. The solutions constructed in the paper may be used as building blocks of solutions of 2D Riemann problems.

In this paper we consider one dimensional mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) under weak assumptions on the coefficient. Unlike [3], the generator of our mean-field BSDEs depends not only on the solution (Y, Z) but also on the law PY of Y. The first part of the paper is devoted to the existence and uniqueness of solutions in Lp, 1 < p ≤ 2, where the monotonicity conditions are satisfied. Next, we show that if the generator f is uniformly continuous in (μ, y, z), uniformly with respect to (t, ω), and if the terminal value ξ belongs to Lp(Ω, F, P) with 1 < p ≤ 2, the mean-field BSDE has a unique Lp solution.

In this paper, we study the regularity of the free boundaries of the parabolic double obstacle problem for the heat operator and fully nonlinear operator. The result in this paper are generalizations of the theory for the elliptic problem in Lee et al. (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 58(3):104, 2019) and Lee and Park (The regularity theory for the double obstacle problem for fully nonlinear operator, , 2018) to parabolic case and also the theory for the parabolic single obstacle problem in Caffarelli et al. (J Am Math Soc 17(4):827–869, 2004) to double obstacle case. New difficulties in the theory which are generated by the characteristic of parabolic PDEs and the existence of the upper obstacle are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the thickness assumptions to have the regularity of the free boundary are carefully considered.

This paper deals with a fourth-order nonlinear parabolic equation with logarithmic nonlinearity coming from the modeling of epitaxial growth. First, by establishing a new infinite time blow-up condition which is independent of the mountain-pass level, we show the solution can be extended over time (the whole half line) and then blows up at $$\infty $$ ; second, we prove that the solution can blow up at $$\infty $$ with arbitrary initial energy using this new infinite time blow-up condition; thirdly, some numerical simulations are presented to verify and illustrate the theoretical results. The results of this paper complete and extend the previous studies on this type of model.

The main motive of the paper is to look on rectifying and osculating curves on a smooth surface. In this paper we find the normal and geodesic curvature for a rectifying curve on a smooth surface and we also prove that geodesic curvature is invariant under the isometry of surfaces such that rectifying curves remain. We find a sufficient condition for which an osculating curve on a smooth surface remains invariant under isometry of surfaces and also we prove that the component of the position vector of an osculating curve α(s) on a smooth surface along any tangent vector to the surface at α(s) is invariant under such isometry.

This paper deals with the pulsating waves and entire solutions for a spatially periodic nonlocal dispersal model with a quiescent stage. By the method of super- and subsolutions together with the comparison principle, we establish the existence of pulsating waves with any speed larger than the spreading speed. The construction of the super- and subsolutions depends on the principal eigenvalue theory for a periodic eigenvalue problem with partially degenerate nonlocal dispersal. The joint results of this paper and our recent work (Wang J B, Li W T, Sun J W. Global dynamics and spreading speeds for a partially degenerate system with non-local dispersal in periodic habitats. Proc Roy Soc Edinburgh Sect A, 2018, 148: 849–880) show that the spreading speed coincides with the minimal wave speed of pulsating waves for the considered system. Moreover, combining the rightward and leftward pulsating waves with different speeds and a spatially periodic solution, we prove the existence and qualitative properties of entire solutions other than pulsating waves, which provide some new spreading ways in a heterogeneous habitat.

International audience; This article is the continuation of our first work on the determination of the cases where there is equality in Courant's Nodal Domain theorem in the case of a Robin boundary condition (with Robin parameter h). For the square, our first paper focused on the case where h is large and extended results that were obtained by Pleijel, Bérard-Helffer, for the problem with a Dirichlet boundary condition. There, we also obtained some general results about the behaviour of the nodal structure (for planar domains) under a small deformation of h, where h is positive and not close to 0. In this second paper, we extend results that were obtained by Helffer-Persson-Sundqvist for the Neumann problem to the case where h > 0 is small. MSC classification (2010): 35P99, 58J50, 58J37.

The waveguide considered coincides with a strip having two narrows of width e. An electron wave function satisfies the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation. The part of the waveguide between the narrows serves as a resonator, and conditions for the electron resonant tunneling may occur. In the paper, asymptotic formulas as e → 0 for characteristics of the resonant tunneling are used. The asymptotic results are compared with the numerical ones obtained by approximate calculation of the scattering matrix for energies in the interval between the second and third thresholds. The comparison allows us to state an interval of e, where the asymptotic and numerical approaches agree. The suggested methods can be applied to more complicated models than that considered in the paper. In particular, the same approach can be used for asymptotic and numerical analysis of the tunneling in three-dimensional quantum waveguides of variable cross-sections. Bibliography: 3 titles.

Sampling in shift-invariant spaces is a realistic model for signals with smooth spectrum. In this paper, we consider phaseless sampling and reconstruction of real-valued signals in a high-dimensional shift-invariant space from their magnitude measurements on the whole Euclidean space and from their phaseless samples taken on a discrete set with finite sampling density. The determination of a signal in a shift-invariant space, up to a sign, by its magnitude measurements on the whole Euclidean space has been shown in the literature to be equivalent to its nonseparability. In this paper, we introduce an undirected graph associated with the signal in a shift-invariant space and use connectivity of the graph to characterize nonseparability of the signal. Under the local complement property assumption on a shift-invariant space, we find a discrete set with finite sampling density such that nonseparable signals in the shift-invariant space can be reconstructed in a stable way from their phaseless samples taken on that set. In this paper, we also propose a reconstruction algorithm which provides an approximation to the original signal when its noisy phaseless samples are available only. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed algorithm to reconstruct box spline signals from their noisy phaseless samples.

This paper continues ongoing investigations into questions initiated by seventeenth-century experiments of Mariotte on mutual attractions and repulsions of floating objects, later reformulated mathematically by Laplace in the context of idealized surface tension theory. The characteristic nonlinearity in the governing equations imposes restrictions on behavior of solutions as graphs in the Laplace model, to the effect that a priori relations connecting height and inclination of a presumed surface interface occur, severely restricting the heights that can be achieved by solution curves. We develop below some relevant consequences of that phenomenon. The initial section provides general (perhaps inadequate) background, characterizes global qualitative behavior of all solutions of the underlying equations, and elucidates the significant distinctions in behavior that occur for solutions over an interval that extends unboundedly in one base direction. The section next following presents a non-existence result ensuing from the limitations imposed on such solutions (this result is elaborated in the Appendix). Next follow individual properties of general solutions. The remainder of the paper addresses the forces arising between partially submerged bodies. Theorem 6 offers an alternative derivation of a discovery due to Aspley, He, and McCuan, which displays a remarkable identification of net horizontal force with a first integral of the basic equations. These relations simplify significantly some earlier literature; additionally, as indicated in Section 5, they open the way to consideration of a much larger class of partially immersed objects than appears in the Laplace formulation. We complete Section 5 with an illustrative example in a particular case, indicative of a general study currently underway.

In this paper, we introduce a new class of curves that we call helical extension curve in Euclidean space. Then we investigate the differential geometric properties of the helical extension curves. The main result of the paper is that the helical extension curve of a helix is a plane curve. Moreover, we give several simple characterizations of helical extension curve of special curves such as spherical curve.

In this paper we study a class of quasilinear elliptic equations with double phase energy and reaction term depending on the gradient. The main feature is that the associated functional is driven by the Baouendi–Grushin operator with variable coefficient. This partial differential equation is of mixed type and possesses both elliptic and hyperbolic regions. We first establish some new qualitative properties of a differential operator introduced recently by Bahrouni et al. (Nonlinearity 32(7):2481–2495, 2019). Next, under quite general assumptions on the convection term, we prove the existence of stationary waves by applying the theory of pseudomonotone operators. The analysis carried out in this paper is motivated by patterns arising in the theory of transonic flows.

This paper is concerned with a time-periodic and nonlocal system arising from the spread of a deterministic epidemic in multi-types of population by incorporating a seasonal variation. The existence of the critical wave speed of the periodic traveling wavefronts and its coincidence with the spreading speed were proved in Wu et al. (J Math Anal Appl 463:111–133, 2018). In this paper, we prove the uniqueness and stability of all non-critical periodic wavefronts. Of particular interest is the influences of time-periodicity on the spreading speed in one-dimensional case. It turns out that, in comparison with the autonomous case, the periodicity of the infection rate increases the spreading speed, while the periodicity of the combined death/emigration/recovery rate for infectious individuals decreases the spreading speed. We also find that the contact distribution increases the spreading speed.

In this paper, we are concerned with variable coefficients plate system subjected to three partially distributed feedbacks: time-varying delay, frictional and viscoelastic dissipations. This work is devoted to, without any prior quantification of both decay rate of relaxation function and growth rate of frictional dissipation near the origin, establish a general decay result which corresponds to a certainly stable ODE. Our result extends the decay result obtained for some kind of problems with finite history to problem with infinite history. Moreover, this paper allows a wider class of kernels of infinite history, and the usual exponential and polynomial decay rates are only special cases. The proof is based on the multiplier method and some techniques about convex functionals.

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem to a class of non-autonomous evolution equations of parabolic type with non-instantaneous impulses in Banach spaces, where the operators in linear part (possibly unbounded) depend on time t and generate an evolution family. New existence result of piecewise continuous mild solutions is established under more weaker conditions. At last, as a sample of application, the abstract result is applied to a class of non-autonomous partial differential equation of parabolic type with non-instantaneous impulses. The result obtained in this paper is a supplement to the existing literature and essentially extends some existing results in this area.

In this paper, we study the mean value property for both the harmonic functions and the functions in the domain of the Laplacian on the tetrahedral Sierpinski gasket. This paper is a continuation of the work of Strichartz and the first author (Qiu and Strichartz, J Fourier Anal Appl 19:943–966, 2013)where the same property on p.c.f. self-similar sets with Dihedral-3 symmetry was considered.

This paper is a study of one of the most beautiful phenomena in dynamical systems limit cycle. In mathematics, in the study of dynamical systems with two-dimensional phase space, a limit cycle is a closed trajectory having the property that at least one other trajectory spirals into it as time approaches either positive or negative infinity. In this paper, existence and uniqueness of limit cycles for a generalized Lienard system will be studied. Moreover, some examples will be presented to illustrate our results.

This paper deals with the electrostatic MEMS-device parabolic equation $${u_t} - \Delta u = \frac{{\lambda f(x)}}{{{{(1 - u)}^p}}}$$ in a bounded domain Ω of ℝ N , with Dirichlet boundary condition, an initial condition u0(x) ∈ [0, 1) and a nonnegative profile f, where λ > 0, p > 1. The study is motivated by a simplified micro-electromechanical system (MEMS for short) device model. In this paper, the author first gives an asymptotic behavior of the quenching time T* for the solution u to the parabolic problem with zero initial data. Secondly, the author investigates when the solution u will quench, with general λ, u0(x). Finally, a global existence in the MEMS modeling is shown.

The paper is a continuation of previous papers of the authors dealing with the exploration of shortwave diffraction by smooth and strictly convex bodies of revolution (the axisymmetric case). In these problems, the boundary layer method contains two large parameters: one is the Fock parameter M and the second is Λ that characterizes the oblongness of the scatterer. This naturally gives the possibility of using the two-scaled asymptotic expansion, where both M and Λ are regarded as independent. The approximate formulas for the wave field in this situation depend on the mutual strength between the large parameters and may vary. In the paper, we carry out numerical experiments with our formulas, in the case where the Fock analytical solution is in good coincidence with the exact solution of a model problem, in order to examine the influence of the parameter Λ on the wave field. It follows from our numerical experiments that the influence of the oblongness of the scatterer on the wave field is really insignificant if the method of Leontovich–Fock parabolic equation does not meet mathematical difficulties.

The Calibration Integral Equation Method (CIEM) represents an alternative view for resolving inverse heat-conduction problems based on a closely integrated mathematical and calibratory framework. The development of the measurement equation is constructed in the frequency domain and then inverted to the physical time domain through a convolution theorem. Hence, a first-kind Volterra integral equation arises from which the surface thermal condition can be resolved. This paper develops a “solution” formulation for the surface thermal condition initiated by CIEM principles. As with all inverse problems, stability in the prediction is key to the success of the methodology. All inverse problems require regularization by some technique for producing a stable approximate solution. The solution approach is formulated in the frequency domain in terms of a ratio of Laplace-transformed in-depth temperature measurements multiplied by the transformed calibration surface condition. The Laplace-transformed response function contains the calibration and reconstruction information from the in-depth sensor. The reconstructed surface condition is obtained in two steps. First, the inversion of this response function to the time domain is meticulously illustrated. Second, this temporal representation of the response function is then convolved with the measured calibration surface condition for predicting the surface condition. Fundamental to this paper is the mathematical framework required for inverting the Laplace-transformed response function composed of noisy in-depth data. The methodology is demonstrated by investigating a transient, one-dimensional linear heat equation in a semi-infinite geometry as associated with null-point calorimetry. This preliminary study relates the relevant details for the inversion of the response function based on Fourier analysis and presents results highlighting the merit of the concept.

One of the central problems investigated in Alekhno (Positivity 11(3):375–386, 2007, Positivity 13(1):3–20, 2009) is that of providing conditions under which the spectral radius of a positive operator T on a complex Banach lattice lies outside the lower Weyl spectrum of T given that it is not an element of its essential spectrum. In this paper the lower Weyl spectrum of an arbitrary positive ordered Banach algebra element is introduced and studied, and work done in the aforementioned papers are extended to general ordered Banach algebras.

The aim of the paper is to investigate the boundary value problem of the evolution equation Lu = K (x,t) ut - Δu + a (x,t) u = f (x,t). The characteristic property of this type of equations is the failure of the Petrovski’s “A” condition when coefficients are constant [1]. In this case, Cauchy problem is incorrect in the sense of Hadamard. Hence in this paper, the space, guaranteeing the correctness of the boundary value problem in the sense of Hadamard, is selected by adding some additional conditions to the coefficients of the equation.

This paper examines the axisymmetric elastostatic problem that deals with the action of a concentrated normal force on the surface of an isotropic elastic halfspace containing a penny-shaped crack. The mathematical formulation of the elasticity problem should take into consideration the sense of action of the concentrated force. The paper presents the development of Fredholm integral equations of the second-kind that are associated with this category of problem and indicates the numerical technique that is adopted for their solution. The numerical results are presented for the stress intensity factors generated at the penny-shaped crack experiencing either opening or closure.

Our interest in this paper is to explore limit theorems for various geometric functionals of excursion sets of isotropic Gaussian random fields. In the past, asymptotics of nonlinear functionals of Gaussian random fields have been studied [see Berman (Sojourns and extremes of stochastic processes, Wadsworth & Brooks, Monterey, 1991), Kratz and Leon (Extremes 3(1):57–86, 2000), Kratz and Leon (J Theor Probab 14(3):639–672, 2001), Meshenmoser and Shashkin (Stat Probab Lett 81(6):642–646, 2011), Pham (Stoch Proc Appl 123(6):2158–2174, 2013), Spodarev (Chapter in modern stochastics and applications, volume 90 of the series Springer optimization and its applications, pp 221–241, 2013) for a sample of works in such settings], the most recent addition being (Adler and Naitzat in Stoch Proc Appl 2016; Estrade and Leon in Ann Probab 2016) where a central limit theorem (CLT) for Euler integral and Euler–Poincare characteristic, respectively, of the excursions set of a Gaussian random field is proven under some conditions. In this paper, we obtain a CLT for some global geometric functionals, called the Lipschitz–Killing curvatures of excursion sets of Gaussian random fields, in an appropriate setting.

This paper is devoted to the existence of the traveling waves of the equations describing a diffusive susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) model. The existence of traveling waves depends on the basic reproduction rate and the minimal wave speed. We obtain a more precise estimation of the minimal wave speed of the epidemic model, which is of great practical value in the control of serious epidemics. The approach in this paper is to use the Schauder fixed point theorem and the Laplace transform. We also give some numerical results on the minimal wave speed.

In the present paper we introduce a notion of the \(\mathbb {K}\)-Riemann integral as a natural generalization of a usual Riemann integral and study its properties. The aim of this paper is to extend the classical Hermite–Hadamard inequalities to the case when the usual Riemann integral is replaced by the \(\mathbb {K}\)-Riemann integral and the convexity notion is replaced by \(\mathbb {K}\)-convexity.
