Terrorist Network Analysis (TNA) is the field of analyzing and defining the scope of terrorism and researching the countermeasures in order to handle exponentially increasing threats due to ever growing terrorist based activities. This field constitutes several sub-domains such as crawling the data about terrorist attacks/groups, classification, behavioral, and predictive analysis. In this paper we present a systematic review of TNA which includes study of different terrorist groups and attack characteristics, use of online social networks, machine learning techniques and data mining tools in order to counter terrorism. Our survey is divided into three sections of TNA: Data Collection, Analysis Approaches and Future Directions. Each section highlights the major research achievements in order to present active use of research methodology to counter terrorism. Furthermore, the metrics used for TNA analysis have been thoroughly studied and identified. The paper has been written with an intent of providing all the necessary background to the researchers who plan to carry out similar studies in this emerging field of TNA. Our contributions to TNA field are with respect to effective utilization of computational techniques of data mining, machine learning, online social networks, and highlighting the research gaps and challenges in various sub domains. Highlights from the article: Deep learning employs deep neural networks (DNNs), which are neural networks with more than one hidden layer, with recently developed initialization and training strategies using massive amounts of diverse data as examples. The paper provides an overview of recent approaches to deep learning as applied to a range of speech processing tasks, primarily for automatic speech recognition (ASR), but also text-to-speech and speaker, language, and emotion recognition. The authors propose integrating deep neural network (DNN)-HMM technique with the HiLAM method where the state alignment information from the HiLAM is used to discriminatively train a DNN to further improve the system performance.

In this full review paper, the recent emerging trends in Educational Data Science have been reviewed and explored to address the recent topics and contributions in the era of Smart Education. This includes a set of rigorously reviewed world-class manuscripts addressing and detailing state-of-the-art, frameworks and techniques research projects in the area of Data Science applied to Education, using different approaches such as Information Fusion, Soft Computing, Machine Learning, and Internet of Things, among others. Purpose: With the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence, various platforms were developed to aid in the time-consuming process of article screening in systematic reviews. We aim to analyze the efficiency of a machine learning-assisted platform as an end-user to aid in the screening of the articles for selection into systematic review in orthopaedic surgery. Methods: We included three previously published systematic reviews in the field of orthopaedics of increasing levels of difficulty in the structure of the research question to assess the efficiency of a platform with active-learning technology for article screening. We compared the efficiency of the platform compared to the traditional screening and also across the various scenarios tested. We performed five iterations for each review analyzed. The outcome parameters analyzed were the work saved at 95% recall (WSS-95), work saved at 100% recall (WSS-100), and relevant records found after screening the first 30% of the total records (RRF-30). Results: The machine learning-assisted screening significantly improved the rate of identifying the relevant records compared to the traditional screening method (p<0.001). The WSS-95 for the easy, intermediate, and advanced screening scenarios were 78%, 59%, and 38%, respectively. The WSS-100 for the easy, intermediate, and advanced screening scenarios were 75%, 48%, and 7%, respectively. The RRF-30 for the easy, intermediate, and advanced screening scenarios were 97%, 86%, and 64%, respectively. We noted a significant reduction (p<0.001) in the efficiency with the increasing level of difficulty of the screening scenarios. Conclusion: The machine learning platform is significantly better than the traditional method as an assistive technology to aid in article screening. Objective: ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an artificial intelligence language tool developed by OpenAI that utilises machine learning algorithms to generate text that closely mimics human language. It has recently taken the internet by storm. There have been several concerns regarding the accuracy of documents it generates. This study compares the accuracy and quality of several ChatGPT-generated academic articles with those written by human authors. Material and methods: We performed a study to assess the accuracy of ChatGPT-generated radiology articles by comparing them with the published or written, and under review articles. These were independently analysed by two fellowship-trained musculoskeletal radiologists and graded from 1 to 5 (1 being bad and inaccurate to 5 being excellent and accurate). Results: In total, 4 of the 5 articles written by ChatGPT were significantly inaccurate with fictitious references. One of the papers was well written, with a good introduction and discussion; however, all references were fictitious. Conclusion: ChatGPT is able to generate coherent research articles, which on initial review may closely resemble authentic articles published by academic researchers. However, all of the articles we assessed were factually inaccurate and had fictitious references. It is worth noting, however, that the articles generated may appear authentic to an untrained reader. Air pollution is a risk factor for many diseases that can lead to death. Therefore, it is important to develop forecasting mechanisms that can be used by the authorities, so that they can anticipate measures when high concentrations of certain pollutants are expected in the near future. Machine Learning models, in particular, Deep Learning models, have been widely used to forecast air quality. In this paper we present a comprehensive review of the main contributions in the field during the period 2011–2021. We have searched the main scientific publications databases and, after a careful selection, we have considered a total of 155 papers. Adventure tourism is a popular and growing segment within the tourism industry that involves, but is not limited to, hiking, running, and climbing activities. These activities attract investment from foreign travelers interested in practicing sports while exploring other countries. As a result, many software companies started developing Artificial Intelligence solutions to enhance tourists' outdoor adventure experience. One of the leading technologies in this field is recommender systems, which provide personalized recommendations to tourists based on their preferences. While this topic is actively being researched in some sports (running and hiking), other adventure sports disciplines have yet to be fully explored. To standardize the development of intelligence-based recommender systems, we conducted a systematic literature review on more than a thousand scientific papers published in decision support system applications in three outdoor adventure sports, such as running, hiking, and sport climbing. Hence, the main focus of this work is, firstly, to summarize the state-of-the-art methods and techniques being researched and developed by scientists in recommender systems in adventure tourism, secondly, to provide a unified methodology for software solutions designed in this domain, and thirdly, to give further insights into open possibilities in this topic. This literature survey serves as a unified framework for the future development of technologies in adventure tourism. Sustainable education is a crucial aspect of creating a sustainable future, yet it faces several key challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and a lack of awareness and engagement. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to address these challenges and enhance sustainable education by improving access to quality education, creating personalized learning experiences, and supporting data-driven decision-making. One outcome of using AI and Information Technology (IT) systems in sustainable education is the ability to provide students with personalized learning experiences that cater to their unique learning styles and preferences. Additionally, AI systems can provide teachers with data-driven insights into student performance, emotions, and engagement levels, enabling them to tailor their teaching methods and approaches or provide assistance or intervention accordingly. However, the use of AI and IT systems in sustainable education also presents challenges, including issues related to privacy and data security, as well as potential biases in algorithms and machine learning models. Moreover, the deployment of these systems requires significant investments in technology and infrastructure, which can be a challenge for educators. In this review paper, we will provide different perspectives from educators and information technology solution architects to connect education and AI technology. The discussion areas include sustainable education concepts and challenges, technology coverage and outcomes, as well as future research directions. The mining of open pit mines is widespread in China, and there are many cases of landslide accidents. Therefore, the problem of slope stability is highlighted. The stability of the slope is a factor that directly affects the mining efficiency and the safety of the entire mining process. According to the statistics, there is a 15 percent chance of finding landslide risk in China's large-scale mines. And due to the expansion of the mining scale of the enterprise, the problem of slope stability has become increasingly obvious, which has become a major subject in the study of open-pit mine engineering. In order to better predict the slope stability coefficient, this study takes a mine in China as a case to deeply discuss the accuracy of different algorithms in the stability calculation, and then uses a deep learning algorithm to study the stability under rainfall conditions. The change of the coefficient and the change of the stability coefficient before and after the slope treatment are experimentally studied with the displacement of the monitoring point. The result shows that the safety coefficient calculated by the algorithm in this paper is about 7% lower than that of the traditional algorithm. In the slope stability analysis before treatment, the safety factor calculated by the algorithm in this paper is 1.086, and the algorithm in this paper is closer to reality. In the stability analysis of the slope after treatment, the safety factor calculated by the algorithm in this paper is 1.227, and the stability factor meets the requirements of the specification. Collecting and analyzing data from all devices to improve the efficiency of business processes is an important task of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In the age of data explosion, extensive text data generated by the IIoT have given birth to a variety of text representation methods. The task of text representation is to convert the natural language to a form that computer can understand with retaining the original semantics. However, these methods are difficult to effectively extract the semantic features among words and distinguish polysemy in natural language. Combining the advantages of convolutional neural network (CNN) and variational autoencoder (VAE), this paper proposes an intelligent CNN-VAE text representation algorithm as an advanced learning method for social big data within next-generation IIoT, which help users identify the information collected by sensors and perform further processing. This method employs the convolution layer to capture the local features of the context and uses the variational technique to reconstruct feature space to make it conform to the normal distribution. In addition, the improved word2vec model based on topical word embedding (TWE) is utilized to add topical information to word vectors to distinguish polysemy. This paper takes the social big data as an example to illustrate the way of the proposed algorithm applied in the next-generation IIoT and utilizes Cnews dataset to verify the performance of proposed method with four evaluating metrics (i.e., recall, accuracy, precision, and F1-score). Experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms word2vec-avg and CNN-AE in K-nearest neighbor (KNN), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM) classifiers and distinguishes polysemy effectively. In this paper, the SASC (Sentiment Analysis based on Sentiment Clustering) method is proposed to solve the problems of low accuracy and poor stability in the review sentiment clustering methods. Through two-stage sentiment clustering, the hidden sentiment information among the review texts is obtained to improve the accuracy and stability of the results. Specifically, in the first stage, the review representation vector construction method is put forward through the topic model LDA. Then the second stage uses K-means algorithm to achieve further optimization of the sentiment clustering results. In the experiment part, the evaluation methods of sentiment clustering are firstly introduced, and then a series of experiments are carried out on two widely used datasets Large Movie Review Dataset v1.0 and Multi-Domain Sentiment Dataset. The first issue of Artificial Intelligence and Law journal was published in 1992. This paper offers some commentaries on papers drawn from the Journal's third decade. They indicate a major shift within Artificial Intelligence, both generally and in AI and Law: away from symbolic techniques to those based on Machine Learning approaches, especially those based on Natural Language texts rather than feature sets. Eight papers are discussed: two concern the management and use of documents available on the World Wide Web, and six apply machine learning techniques to a variety of legal applications. Semantic image segmentation in computer networks is designed to determine the category to which each pixel in an image belongs. It is a basic computer vision task and has a very wide range of applications in practice. In recent years, semantic image segmentation algorithms in computer networks based on deep learning have attracted widespread attention due to their fast speed and high accuracy. However, due to the large number of downsampling layers in a deep learning model, the segmentation results are usually poor at the edge of an object, and there is currently no universal quantitative evaluation index to measure the performance of segmentation at the edge of an object. Solving these two problems is of great significance to semantic image segmentation algorithms in China. Based on traditional evaluation indicators, this paper proposes a region-based evaluation index to quantitatively measure the performance of segmentation at the edge of an object and proposes an improved loss function to improve model performance. The existing semantic image segmentation methods are summarized. This paper proposes regional-based evaluation indicators. Taking advantage of the particularity of semantic image segmentation tasks, this paper presents an efficient and accurate method for extracting the edges of objects. By defining the distance from pixels to the edges of objects, this paper proposes a fast algorithm for calculating the edge area. Based on this, three methods are proposed as well as an area-based evaluation indicator. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the loss function proposed in this paper, compared with that of the current mainstream cross-entropy loss function, is improved by 1% on the DeepLab model. Research contributions, which indicate how a research paper contributes new knowledge or new understanding in contrast to prior research on the topic, are the most valuable type of information for researchers to understand the main content of a paper. However, there is little research using research contributions to identify and recommend valuable knowledge in academic literature for users. Instead, most existing studies mainly focus on the analysis of other elements in academic literature, such as keywords, citations, rhetorical structure, discourse, and others. This paper first introduces a fine-grained annotation scheme with six categories for research contributions in academic literature. To evaluate the reliability of our annotation scheme, we conduct annotation on 5024 sentences collected from Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL Anthology) and an academic journal Information Processing & Management (IP &M). We reach an inter-annotator agreement of Cohen's kappa = 0.91 and Fleiss' kappa = 0.91, demonstrating the high quality of the dataset. We then built two types of classifiers for automated research contribution identification based on the dataset: classic feature-based machine learning (ML) and transformer-based deep learning (DL). Our experimental results show that SCI-BERT, a pretrained language model for scientific text, achieves the best performance with an F1 score of 0.58, improving the best classic ML model (nouns + verbs + tf-idf + random forest) by 2%. This also indicates a comparable power of classic feature-based ML models to DL-based model like SCI-BERT on this dataset. The fine-grained annotation scheme can be applied for large-scale analysis for research contributions in academic literature. The automated research contribution classifiers built in this paper provide the basis for the automatic research contributions extraction and knowledge fragment recommendation. Machine learning is frequently being leveraged to tackle problems in the health sector including utilization for clinical decision-support. Its use has historically been focused on single modal data. Attempts to improve prediction and mimic the multimodal nature of clinical expert decision-making has been met in the biomedical field of machine learning by fusing disparate data. This review was conducted to summarize the current studies in this field and identify topics ripe for future research. We conducted this review in accordance with the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews to characterize multi-modal data fusion in health. Search strings were established and used in databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and IEEEXplore from 2011 to 2021. A final set of 128 articles were included in the analysis. The most common health areas utilizing multi-modal methods were neurology and oncology. Early fusion was the most common data merging strategy. Notably, there was an improvement in predictive performance when using data fusion. Lacking from the papers were clear clinical deployment strategies, FDA-approval, and analysis of how using multimodal approaches from diverse sub-populations may improve biases and healthcare disparities. These findings provide a summary on multimodal data fusion as applied to health diagnosis/prognosis problems. Few papers compared the outputs of a multimodal approach with a unimodal prediction. However, those that did achieved an average increase of 6.4% in predictive accuracy. Multi-modal machine learning, while more robust in its estimations over unimodal methods, has drawbacks in its scalability and the time-consuming nature of information concatenation. Research on the wave field evolution law is highly significant to the fields of offshore engineering and marine resource development. Numerical simulations have been conducted for high-precision wave field evolution, thus providing short-term wave field prediction. However, its evolution occurs over a long period of time, and its accuracy is difficult to improve. In recent years, the use of machine learning methods to study the evolution of wave field has received increasing attention from researchers. This paper proposes a wave field evolution method based on deep convolutional neural networks. This method can effectively correlate the spatiotemporal characteristics of wave data via convolution operation and directly obtain the offshore forecast results of the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. The attention mechanism, multi-scale path design, and hard example mining training strategy are introduced to suppress the interference caused by Weibull distributed wave field data and improve the accuracy of the proposed wave field evolution. The 72- and 480-h evolution experiment results in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea show that the proposed method in this paper has excellent forecast accuracy and timeliness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: We systematically reviewed the current literature evaluating the ability of fully-automated deep learning (DL) and semi-automated traditional machine learning (TML) MRI-based artificial intelligence (AI) methods to differentiate clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) from indolent PCa (iPCa) and benign conditions. Methods: We performed a computerised bibliographic search of studies indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed, arXiv, medRxiv, and bioRxiv between 1 January 2016 and 31 July 2021. Two reviewers performed the title/abstract and full-text screening. The remaining papers were screened by four reviewers using the Checklist for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CLAIM) for DL studies and Radiomics Quality Score (RQS) for TML studies. Papers that fulfilled the pre-defined screening requirements underwent full CLAIM/RQS evaluation alongside the risk of bias assessment using QUADAS-2, both conducted by the same four reviewers. Standard measures of discrimination were extracted for the developed predictive models. Results: 17/28 papers (five DL and twelve TML) passed the quality screening and were subject to a full CLAIM/RQS/QUADAS-2 assessment, which revealed a substantial study heterogeneity that precluded us from performing quantitative analysis as part of this review. The mean RQS of TML papers was 11/36, and a total of five papers had a high risk of bias. AUCs of DL and TML papers with low risk of bias ranged between 0.80–0.89 and 0.75–0.88, respectively. Conclusion: We observed comparable performance of the two classes of AI methods and identified a number of common methodological limitations and biases that future studies will need to address to ensure the generalisability of the developed models. Underwater target detection and classification based on sonar images is a challenging task because of the complex underwater environment. In recent years, deep learning technology has effectively improved the detection accuracy of underwater targets compared to traditional sonar image target detection methods, which have a low accuracy and poor robustness. However, deep learning algorithms for sonar image target detection have fewer training samples and a low detection speed. To solve these problems, an improved YOLOv4 based sonar target detection and classification algorithm is proposed in this paper. First, the feature extraction network CSPDarknet-53 in YOLOv4 is improved to reduce both the model parameters and the network depth. Second, the PANet feature enhancement module in the YOLOv4 model is replaced by the adaptive spatial feature fusion module (ASFF) to obtain a better feature fusion effect. In addition, the number of fusion feature layers is increased to improve the receptive field and detection accuracy. Furthermore, this paper uses the k-means++ algorithm to cluster the sonar image dataset to obtain the appropriate size and number of anchor boxes for model training. Traditional object recognition algorithms cannot meet the requirements of object recognition accuracy in the actual warehousing and logistics field. In recent years, the rapid development of the deep learning theory has provided a technical approach for solving the above problems, and a number of object recognition algorithms has been proposed based on deep learning, which have been promoted and applied. However, deep learning has the following problems in the application process of object recognition: First, the nonlinear modeling ability of the activation function in the deep learning model is poor; second, the deep learning model has a large number of repeated pooling operations during which information is lost. In view of these shortcomings, this paper proposes multiple-parameter exponential linear units with uniform and learnable parameter forms and introduces two learned parameters in the exponential linear unit (ELU), enabling it to represent piecewise linear and exponential nonlinear functions. Therefore, the ELU has good nonlinear modeling capabilities. At the same time, to improve the problem of losing information in the large number of repeated pooling operations, this paper proposes a new global convolutional neural network structure. This network structure makes full use of the local and global information of different layer feature maps in the network. It can reduce the problem of losing feature information in the large number of pooling operations. Based on the above ideas, this paper suggests an object recognition algorithm based on the optimized nonlinear activation function-global convolutional neural network. Experiments were carried out on the CIFAR100 dataset and the ImageNet dataset using the object recognition algorithm proposed in this paper. The results show that the object recognition method suggested in this paper not only has a better recognition accuracy than traditional machine learning and other deep learning models but also has a good stability and robustness. Data centers are a major source of carbon emissions and are subsequently contributing to global carbon footprints. Keeping in view of providing a sustainable solution to society, we have analyzed various factors that can help to achieve carbon neutrality and maximum sustainability. Our study pointed towards the need to follow a sustainable approach for incoming workflow throughout the life-cycle of Data centers. We analyzed that workloads need to be segregated before assigning them to the data centers so that energy-efficient resource allocation could be done. This paper demonstrates unsupervised learning techniques to cluster the incoming cloud workloads. The heterogeneous workloads were characterized using machine learning approaches and appropriate clusters were crafted. For analysis, Google Cluster Dataset is used. In order to improve the accuracy, data were normalized, and random samples of data were selected for clustering. The inductive logic of grounded theory and the principle of avoiding theoretical preconceptions are significantly different from the deductive logic and hypothesis testing of traditional quantitative research. Based on the limitations of theory production in quantitative research, this paper proposes a Computing Grounded Theory (CGT) approach that directly quantitatively assists theories. With the help of machine learning and attribution algorithms, CGT identifies variables that have not been the focus of previous studies based on the predictive power of the independent variables to propose new theoretical hypotheses, following the principle that causality is a sufficient and unnecessary condition for predictability. This paper systematically discusses CGT's basic idea, logical premise, and methodological foundation while providing an empirical example. A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a centralized energy system that manages, and coordinates distributed energy resources, integrating them into a unified entity. While the physical assets may be dispersed across various locations, the VPP integrates them into a virtual unified entity capable of responding to grid demands and market signals. This paper presents a tri-level hierarchical coordinated operational framework of VPP. Firstly, an Improved Pelican Optimization Algorithm (IPOA) is introduced to optimally schedule Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) within the VPP, resulting in a significant reduction in generation costs. Comparative analysis against conventional algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) demonstrates IPOA's superior performance, achieving an average reduction of 8.5% in generation costs across various case studies. The second stage focuses on securing the optimized generation data from rising cyber threats, employing the capabilities of machine learning, preferably, a convolutional autoencoder to learn the normal patterns of the optimized data to detect deviations from the optimized generation data to prevent suboptimal decisions. The model exhibits exceptional performance in detecting manipulated data, with a False Positive Rate (FPR) of 1.92% and a Detection Accuracy (DA) of 98.06%, outperforming traditional detection techniques. Lastly, the paper delves into the dynamic nature of the day ahead market that the VPP participates in. In responding to the grid by selling its optimized generated power via the day-ahead market, the VPP employs the Prophet model, another machine learning technique to forecast the spot market price for the day-ahead to mitigate the adverse effects of price volatility. In the past, information technology was frequently considered a waste from Lean manufacturing perspective. Though the business landscape evolves and competition from low-cost nations grows, new models must be created that provides a competitive edge by combining the Lean paradigm with Industry 4.0 technical advancements. This paper aims to contribute to this field by assessing the supporting function of a Machine-based Identification system (MBID) via Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in Lean manufacturing paradigm. The objective of this paper is to also explore the use of MBID to enable a competitive manufacturing process in a Lean 4.0 environment. Furthermore, a MBID via OCR model is proposed to extract the printed identification number of packages from images captured by a fixed camera in an industrial environment. The method considers different digital image processing techniques to deal with the significant lighting and printing variation observed, followed by a segmentation process that extracts and aligns the characters. The proposed system utilized an approach to treating lighting variations in images, covering low contrast, distorted, darker, and brighter images. Experiments were carried out on a data set consisting of 200 images and achieved an overall detection accuracy of 95% with a very low Character Error Rate (CER) value of 0.0041, clearly supporting the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method. With the formation and popularization of the 5G-enabled industrial internet, cybersecurity risks are increasing, and the limited number of attack samples, such as zero-day, leaves a short response time for security protectors, making it substantially more difficult to protect industrial control systems from new types of malicious attacks. Traditional supervised intrusion detection models rely on a large number of samples for training and their performance needs to be improved. Therefore, there is an urgent need for few-shot intrusion detection. Aiming at the above problems, this paper proposes a detection model based on a meta-learning framework, which aims to effectively improve the accuracy and real-time performance of intrusion detection, and designs a meta-learning intrusion detection model containing a sample generation module, a feature mapping module and a feature metric module. Among them, the sample generation module introduces the residual block into the Natural GAN and proposes a new method to generate high-quality antagonistic samples—Res-Natural GAN, which is used to enhance the antagonism of the generated samples and the feature mining degree, to improve the accuracy of malicious traffic detection; the feature mapping module proposes a new attention mechanism, the multi-head fast attention mechanism, which is applied to the encoder structure of the transformer and combined with a parameter optimization algorithm based on particle swarm mutation to shorten the mapping time and improve the real-time performance of the model while mapping the features effectively; the feature metric module proposes a prototype structure based on a prototype storage update algorithm and combines it with a prototype network to achieve correct classification by measuring the Euclidean distance between the detected samples and the class of prototypes, and to shorten the inference time while ensuring the detection accuracy; finally, the three modules are combined to form a real-time meta-learning intrusion detection model. To evaluate the proposed model, five different types of experiments are conducted on multiple public datasets. Since the traditional ship stability failure probability assessment method has many input parameters and cumbersome intermediate calculation process, this paper proposes a joint multi-model machine learning prediction method based on confidence. The method calculates the confidence of each machine learning model for the current prediction result, selects the top n models among them, and takes the average of their prediction results as the output. The confidence is calculated by a method inspired by semi-supervised learning. To reduce the number of ship features that need to be input for assessment, a sensitivity analysis is used to reject irrelevant features. Eight machine learning models that have good performance and are widely used in other fields, including Radial Basis Function Neural Network, Random Forest, eXtreme Gradient Boosting, and so on, are used as component learners in this study. The hyperparameters of each model are obtained by cross-validation and grid search. The advancedness of the proposed method is verified by comparing it with other models on a small self-built ship stability failure probability dataset. By conducting experiments that simply average the results of the component learners, it is confirmed that simple superposition different models does not necessarily improve the accuracy. At the same time, after pre-processing the input features in different ways, the comparison of the prediction performance was conducted, and the experimental results showed that the proposed method is not affected by the way the input features are preprocessed and therefore has some robustness. This paper contributes to the ongoing debate on the nature and characteristics of the volatility transmission channels of major crash events in international stock markets between 03 July 1997 and 09 March 2021. Using dynamic conditional correlations (DCC) for conditional correlations and volatility clustering, GARCH-BEKK for the direction of transmission of disturbances, and the Diebold-Yilmaz spillover index for the level of volatility contagion, the paper finds that the climbs in external shock transmissions have long-lasting impacts in domestic markets due to the contagion effect during crisis periods. The findings also reveal that the heavier magnitude of financial stress is transmitted between Asian countries via the Hong Kong stock market. Additionally, the degree of volatility spillovers between advanced and emerging equity markets is smaller compared to the pure spillovers between advanced markets or emerging markets, offering a window of opportunity for international market participants in terms of portfolio diversification and risk management applications. Furthermore, the study introduces a novel early warning system created by integrating DCC correlations with a state-of-the-art deep learning model to predict the global financial crisis and COVID-19 crisis. The experimental analysis of long short-term memory network finds evidence of contagion risk by verifying bursts in volatility spillovers and generating signals with high accuracy before the 12-month crisis period. Neighborhood rough sets, as an effective tool for processing numerical data, is widely used in many fields, such as data mining, machine learning and decision-making system. However, most of the existing neighborhood rough set-based attribute reduction algorithms have low efficiency. To address the limitation, this paper has proposed an efficient positive region search algorithm based on multiple hash buckets and multiple granularity mechanisms. This algorithm achieves a more accurate neighborhood extent by superimposing the effects of multiple hash buckets, and accelerates positive region searching through the idea of multiple granularity. In addition, on the foundation the positive region search algorithm, we improved the existing algorithm and proposed an attribute reduction algorithm based on multi-hash bucket and multi-granularity. To further remove the redundant attributes, the two algorithms mentioned above are applied into a novel attribute reduction approach based on random walk. Experiments conducted on UCI datasets show that our attribute reduction algorithm has high efficiency. Egypt has been reporting several subnational socioeconomic indicators for more than three decades. However, utilizing these valuable datasets for monitoring long temporal trends in local development and inequalities has been hindered by the lack of a key indicator, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was only reported subnationally starting 2013. This paper aims to address this data gap, by employing satellite-generated nighttime lights (NTL) and machine learning, to estimate subnational GDP in Egypt from 1992 to 2012. The paper relies on the harmonized global nighttime lights dataset that extends from 1992 to 2021, to carry out a twofold process. First, it validates NTL as a useful proxy for subnational economic activity in Egypt using econometric methods; then it estimates missing GDP using machine learning algorithms. Results show that the concentration of nearly the entire Egyptian population densely around the Nile River is challenging to nighttime lights accuracy; however, upon accounting for population density and agricultural activity, NTL could serve as a valuable proxy for subnational GDP in Egypt, and consequently a coherent GDP dataset is constructed since 1992. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a paradigm shift in the network industry with decoupling of control and data plane. This helps network engineers to control and manage their network from centralized controller and troubleshoot the network at much better pace. With the benefits that SDN provides, it also has some vulnerable to attacks like Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) that can disrupt the availability of the network. Most of the recent research work in DDoS detection and mitigation is done over Traditional network environments and packet limit strategy is used for mitigation by researchers with very less focus on redirection of illegitimate traffic which can result in less downtime and helpful in network analysis. The major contribution of this paper is detection and mitigation of DDoS in Software Defined Networks. We have created our own DDoS dataset with over 1.7 million entries. For Detection, we have used two different methods: (1) Snort (IDS) and (2) Machine Learning. In Machine Learning, we have used eight different Machine Learning algorithms that also include Ensemble Classifier and a Hybrid method of SVM-RF. We were able to get 99.1% accuracy which is a substantial growth as compared to recent works. For Mitigation, we have again used two methods: (1) Drop illegitimate traffic and (2) Redirect Illegitimate traffic. Results showed that hybrid SVM-RF algorithm works better as compared to individual Machine Learning algorithms and also as mitigation depends on Detection accuracy, so, the better the detection, the better the mitigation. Diagnostics are critical on the path to commercial fusion reactors, since measurements and characterisation of the plasma is important for sustaining fusion reactions. Gamma spectroscopy is commonly used to provide information about the neutron energy spectrum from activation analysis, which can be used to calculate the neutron flux and fusion power. The detection limits for measuring nuclear dosimetry reactions used in such diagnostics are fundamentally related to Compton scattering events making up a background continuum in measured spectra. This background lies in the same energy region as peaks from low-energy gamma rays, leading to detection and characterisation limitations. This paper presents a digital machine learning Compton suppression algorithm (MLCSA), that uses state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to perform pulse shape discrimination for high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. The MLCSA identifies key features of individual pulses to differentiate between those that are generated from photopeaks and Compton scatter events. Compton events are then rejected, reducing the low energy background. This novel suppression algorithm improves gamma spectroscopy results by lowering minimum detectable activity (MDA) limits and thus reducing the measurement time required to reach the desired detection limit. In this paper, the performance of the MLCSA is demonstrated using an HPGe detector, with a gamma spectrum containing americium-241 (Am-241) and cobalt-60 (Co-60). The MDA of Am-241 improved by 51% and the signal to background ratio improved by 49%, while the Co-60 peaks were partially preserved (reduced by 78%). The MLCSA requires no modelling of the specific detector and so has the potential to be detector agnostic, meaning the technique could be applied to a variety of detector types and applications. Uncertainty analysis is an inevitable attribute of location-allocation problems due to unforecastable parameter changes. Although the simultaneous variation of parameters is more realistic than their instinct variation, the simultaneous sensitivity analysis (SSA) of mixed-integer mathematical models’ outputs upon simultaneous changes of parameters’ value has taken no attention. In the metamodeling process using machine learning tools like regression models and artificial neural networks, several combinations of input values are used for metamodel creation. This paper employs this feature of metamodeling to propose an approach for global sensitivity analysis of mixed-integer mathematical models. The proposed approach is applied in analyzing a newly developed multi-period mixed integer mathematical model for cancer hospitals’ location-allocation problem in a case study. The comparison of results using SSA based on using Regression metamodel (RMM) and traditional one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) methods showed different ranks of parameters. In addition to more adaptation of SSA to simultaneous changes of parameters in the real world, the created machine learning tools aim to forecast the corresponding outputs approximately when the mixed-integer mathematical model is infeasible or long-run upon some combinations of input parameters’ value. Electroencephalography (EEG) evaluation is an important step in the clinical diagnosis of brain death during the standard clinical procedure. The processing of the brain-death EEG signals acquisition always carried out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The electromagnetic environmental noise and prescribed sedative may erroneously suggest cerebral electrical activity, thus effecting the presentation of EEG signals. In order to accurately and efficiently assist physicians in making correct judgments, this paper presents a band-pass filter and threshold rejection-based EEG signal pre-processing method and an EEG-based coma/brain-death classification system associated with One Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) model to classify informative brain activity features from real-world recorded clinical EEG data. The experimental result shows that our method is well performed in classify the coma patients and brain-death patients with the classification accuracy of 99.71%, F1-score of 99.71% and recall score of 99.51%, which means the proposed model is well performed in the coma/brain-death EEG signals classification task. This paper provides a more straightforward and effective method for pre-processing and classifying EEG signals from coma/brain-death patients, and demonstrates the validity and reliability of the method. Considering the specificity of the condition and the complexity of the EEG acquisition environment, it presents an effective method for pre-processing real-time EEG signals in clinical diagnoses and aiding the physicians in their diagnosis, with significant implications for the choice of signal pre-processing methods in the construction of practical brain-death identification systems. Social media have undoubtedly changed our ways of living. Their presence concerns an increasing number of users (over 4,74 billion) and pervasively expands in the most diverse areas of human life. Marketing, education, news, data, and sociality are just a few of the many areas in which social media play now a central role. Recently, some attention toward the link between social media and political participation has emerged. Works in the field of artificial intelligence have already pointed out that there is a close link between the use of machine learning algorithms in social media and possible epistemic isolation, which could lead to political radicalization. The idea supporting this paper is that artificial intelligence for social media can actively put users’ deliberative capacity at risk and foster political extremism. To prove these claims, I proceed along two lines of inquiry. First, I focus on filter bubbles, namely the result of selections made by algorithms that recommend contents that meet users’ expectations and opinions. To analyze this phenomenon, I refer to the Deweyan model of experience. Second, I connect the filter bubbles problem to the Deweyan idea of deliberative and participatory democracy and Nussbaum’s concept of political compassion. The purpose of this paper is to provide a philosophical foundation that can both (1) effectively serve as a method for analyzing machine learning algorithms and their potential problems in relation to political extremism, and (2) be adopted as a standard to counter the danger of extremism associated with social media experience. This paper explores the intersection of art history and AI technology. Special attention is paid to Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a machine learning technology widely used in AI art. This technology is particularly interesting to art history and the philosophy of art because it raises enduring questions about the creative process of artmaking, especially what constitutes a new and original work of art. While this is a relatively new area, it is possible to discern emerging directions where art and AI intersect. One pressing issue concerns the use (or misuse) of algorithmically enabled technologies and datasets to perpetuate longstanding art-historical biases. The critical position adopted in this paper shares this concern. I examine a notable example of GAN technology that claims to create original art styles. While such experiments in computational creativity are technically interesting, their artistic aims can be questionable. I argue a mechanical model of artistic development based solely on the autonomy of style is problematic for at least two reasons: 1) it uncritically reinstates a formalist view of art history; 2) it recreates a narrow style-centric ‘historical modernism.’ However, despite voicing these reservations, I also discuss the potential of this technology to engage with topics of critical relevance to art history and the philosophy of art. This paper discusses some societal implications of the most recent and publicly discussed application of advanced machine learning techniques: generative AI models, such as ChatGPT (text generation) and DALL-E (text-to-image generation). The aim is to shift attention away from conceptual disputes, e.g. regarding their level of intelligence and similarities/differences with human performance, to focus instead on practical problems, pertaining the impact that these technologies might have (and already have) on human societies. After a preliminary clarification of how generative AI works (Sect. 1), the paper discusses what kind of transparency ought to be required for such technologies and for the business model behind their commercial exploitation (Sect. 2), what is the role of user-generated data in determining their performance and how it should inform the redistribution of the resulting benefits (Sect. 3), the best way of integrating generative AI systems in the creative job market and how to properly negotiate their role in it (Sect. 4), and what kind of “cognitive extension” offered by these technologies we ought to embrace, and what type we should instead resist and monitor (Sect. 5). The last part of the paper summarizes the main conclusions of this analysis, also marking its distance from other, more apocalyptic approaches to the dangers of AI for human society. The inverse kinematics solution of manipulators is an important part of manipulator control, which calculates the joint angles required for the end effector to reach a desired position and posture. Traditional inverse kinematics solution algorithms often face the problem of insufficient generalization, and iterative methods have challenges such as large computation and long solution time. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based inverse kinematics solution algorithm, called the MAPPO-IK algorithm. The algorithm trains the manipulator agent using the MAPPO algorithm and calculates the difference between the end effector state of the manipulator and the target posture in real-time by designing a reward mechanism, while considering Gaussian distance and cosine distance. Through experimental comparative analysis, the feasibility, computational efficiency, and superiority of this reinforcement learning algorithm are verified. Compared with traditional inverse kinematics solution algorithms, this method has good generalization and supports real-time computation, and the obtained result is a unique solution. Reinforcement learning algorithms have better adaptability to complex environments and can handle different sudden situations in different environments. Background: Emotion is a complex phenomenon that greatly affects human behavior and thinking in daily life. Electroencephalography (EEG), one of the human physiological signals, has been emphasized by most researchers in emotion recognition as its specific properties are closely associated with human emotion. However, the number of human emotion recognition studies using computer games as stimuli is still insufficient as there were no relevant publicly available datasets provided in the past decades. Most of the recent studies using the Gameemo public dataset have not clarified the relationship between the EEG signal's changes and the emotion elicited using computer games. Thus, this paper is proposed to introduce the use of data mining techniques in investigating the relationships between the frequency changes of EEG signals and the human emotion elicited when playing different kinds of computer games. The data acquisition stage, data pre-processing, data annotation and feature extraction stage were designed and conducted in this paper to obtain and extract the EEG features from the Gameemo dataset. The cross-subject and subject-based experiments were conducted to evaluate the classifiers' performance. The top 10 association rules generated by the RCAR classifier will be examined to determine the possible relationship between the EEG signal's frequency changes and game-induced emotions. Results: The RCAR classifier constructed for cross-subject experiment achieved highest accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score evaluated with over 90% in classifying the HAPV, HANV and LANV game-induced emotions. The 20 experiment cases' results from subject-based experiments supported that the SVM classifier could accurately classify the 4 emotion states with a kappa value over 0.62, demonstrating the SVM-based algorithm's capabilities in precisely determining the emotion label for each participant's EEG features' instance. Conclusion: The findings in this study fill the existing gap of game-induced emotion recognition field by providing an in-depth evaluation on the ruleset algorithm's performance and feasibility of applying the generated rules on the game-induced EEG data for justifying the emotional state prediction result. This paper aims to elucidate the process of the wetland carbon cycle, summarize the factors affecting wetland carbon sinks, and explore the interplay between various factors and their influence on wetland carbon sinks, aiming to provide theoretical support for the study of wetland carbon sinks. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the pernicious effects of fake news, underscoring the critical need for researchers and practitioners to detect and mitigate its spread. In this paper, we examined the importance of detecting fake news and incorporated sentiment and emotional features to detect this type of news. Specifically, we compared the sentiments and emotions associated with fake and real news using a COVID-19 Twitter dataset with labeled categories. By utilizing different sentiment and emotion lexicons, we extracted sentiments categorized as positive, negative, and neutral and eight basic emotions, anticipation, anger, joy, sadness, surprise, fear, trust, and disgust. Our analysis revealed that fake news tends to elicit more negative emotions than real news. Therefore, we propose that negative emotions could serve as vital features in developing fake news detection models. To test this hypothesis, we compared the performance metrics of three machine learning models: random forest, support vector machine (SVM), and Naïve Bayes. We evaluated the models' effectiveness with and without emotional features. Our results demonstrated that integrating emotional features into these models substantially improved the detection performance, resulting in a more robust and reliable ability to detect fake news on social media. Integrating energy systems with information systems in smart grids offers a promising avenue for combating electricity theft by leveraging real-time data insights. Suspicious activity indicative of theft can be identified through anomalous consumption patterns observed in smart networks. However, a smart model is required for capturing and analysing the data intelligently to accurately detect electricity theft. In the paper, electricity theft has been detected using an encoder-decoder-based classifier that integrates two models of convolutional neural networks (CNN). The aim is to scan the strength of the data and built a smart model that analysed the connections in complex data and determine the pattern of theft. The model comprises three compartments: the auto-encoder, the wide convolutional neural network (1-D CNN model), and the deep convolutional neural network (2-D CNN model). The auto-encoder has been trained on the complex and in-depth linkage between the theft data and the normal data as it removes noise and unnecessary information. The 1-D CNN model gathers relevant connections and general features, while the 2-D CNN model determines the rate at which energy theft occurs and differentiates between the energy-stealing consumers and normal consumers. The efficacy of the approach is underscored by its superiority over traditional deep learning and machine learning techniques. This paper proposes a forward layer-wise learning algorithm for CNNs in classification problems. The algorithm utilizes the Separation Index (SI) as a supervised complexity measure to evaluate and train each layer in a forward manner. The proposed method explains that gradually increasing the SI through layers reduces the input data's uncertainties and disturbances, achieving a better feature space representation. Hence, by approximating the SI with a variant of local triplet loss at each layer, a gradient-based learning algorithm is suggested to maximize it. Inspired by the NGRAD (Neural Gradient Representation by Activity Differences) hypothesis, the proposed algorithm operates in a forward manner without explicit error information from the last layer. The algorithm's performance is evaluated on image classification tasks using VGG16, VGG19, AlexNet, and LeNet architectures with CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, Raabin-WBC, and Fashion-MNIST datasets. Additionally, the experiments are applied to text classification tasks using the DBPedia and AG's News datasets. Background: Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is a type of cardiac arrhythmia that originates from ectopic pacemaker in the ventricles. The localization of the origin of PVC is essential for successful catheter ablation. However, most studies on non-invasive PVC localization focus on elaborate localization in specific regions of the ventricle. This study aims to propose a machine learning algorithm based on 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) data that can improve the accuracy of PVC localization in the whole ventricle. Methods: We collected 12-lead ECG data from 249 patients with spontaneous or pacing-induced PVCs. The ventricle was divided into 11 segments. In this paper, we propose a machine learning method consisting of two consecutive classification steps. In the first classification step, each PVC beat was labeled to one of the 11 ventricular segments using six features, including a newly proposed morphological feature called "Peak_index." Four machine learning methods were tested for comparative multi-classification performance and the best classifier result was kept to the next step. In the second classification step, a binary classifier was trained using a smaller combination of features to further differentiate segments that are easily confused. Results: The Peak_index as a proposed new classification feature combined with other features is suitable for whole ventricle classification by machine learning methods. The test accuracy of the first classification reached 75.87%. It is shown that a second classification for confusable categories can improve the classification results. After the second classification, the test accuracy reached 76.84%, and when a sample classified into adjacent segments was considered correct, the test "rank accuracy" was improved to 93.49%. The binary classification corrected 10% of the confused samples. Conclusion: This paper proposes a "two-step classification" method to localize the origin of PVC beats into the 11 regions of the ventricle using non-invasive 12-lead ECG. Accurate and stable estimation of the state of health (SOH), which is one of the critical indicators to characterize the ability of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries to store and release energy, is critical in the stable driving of electric vehicles. In this paper, a novel SOH estimation method based on the aging factors of battery, which combines convolutional neural network (CNN), wavelet neural network (WNN), and wavelet long short-term memory (WLSTM) named CNN–WNN–WLSTM, is designed. The proposed CNN–WNN–WLSTM estimation scheme inherits both the fast convergence and robust stability of the WNN, as well as the ability of long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) to extract the time series features of the data; moreover, using CNN can make the proposed algorithm extract the data features from the original battery data automatically, and the WNN–WLSTM is then adopted to produce the final SOH estimation by exploiting the features from the CNN. To further speed and achieve global optimization, the RMSprop optimizer, instead of the usually used Adagrad optimizer, is chosen as the solver of the CNN–WNN–WLSTM network. Experimental results on data set from the NASA Ames Prognostics Center of Excellence show that the proposed algorithm can be commendably used for Li-ion battery health management by quantitative comparison with other commonly used machine learning methods, such as back-propagation neural network, WNN, LSTM, WLSTM, convolutional neural network–long short-term memory neural network (CNN–LSTM), and Gaussian process regression.
