Aims/hypothesis: A precision medicine approach in type 2 diabetes could enhance targeting specific glucose-lowering therapies to individual patients most likely to benefit. We aimed to use the recently developed Bayesian causal forest (BCF) method to develop and validate an individualised treatment selection algorithm for two major type 2 diabetes drug classes, sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA). Methods: We designed a predictive algorithm using BCF to estimate individual-level conditional average treatment effects for 12-month glycaemic outcome (HbA1c) between SGLT2i and GLP1-RA, based on routine clinical features of 46,394 people with type 2 diabetes in primary care in England (Clinical Practice Research Datalink; 27,319 for model development, 19,075 for hold-out validation), with additional external validation in 2252 people with type 2 diabetes from Scotland (SCI-Diabetes [Tayside & Fife]). Differences in glycaemic outcome with GLP1-RA by sex seen in clinical data were replicated in clinical trial data (HARMONY programme: liraglutide [n=389] and albiglutide [n=1682]). As secondary outcomes, we evaluated the impacts of targeting therapy based on glycaemic response on weight change, tolerability and longer-term risk of new-onset microvascular complications, macrovascular complications and adverse kidney events. Results: Model development identified marked heterogeneity in glycaemic response, with 4787 (17.5%) of the development cohort having a predicted HbA1c benefit >3 mmol/mol (>0.3%) with SGLT2i over GLP1-RA and 5551 (20.3%) having a predicted HbA1c benefit >3 mmol/mol with GLP1-RA over SGLT2i. Calibration was good in hold-back validation, and external validation in an independent Scottish dataset identified clear differences in glycaemic outcomes between those predicted to benefit from each therapy. Sex, with women markedly more responsive to GLP1-RA, was identified as a major treatment effect modifier in both the UK observational datasets and in clinical trial data: HARMONY-7 liraglutide (GLP1-RA): 4.4 mmol/mol (95% credible interval [95% CrI] 2.2, 6.3) (0.4% [95% CrI 0.2, 0.6]) greater response in women than men. Targeting the two therapies based on predicted glycaemic response was also associated with improvements in short-term tolerability and long-term risk of new-onset microvascular complications. Conclusions/interpretation: Precision medicine approaches can facilitate effective individualised treatment choice between SGLT2i and GLP1-RA therapies, and the use of routinely collected clinical features for treatment selection could support low-cost deployment in many countries. Globally, there is a concerning decline in many insect populations, and this trend likely extends to all arthropods, potentially impacting unique island biota. Native non-endemic and endemic species on islands are under threat due to habitat destruction, with the introduction of exotic, and potentially invasive, species, further contributing to this decline. While long-term studies of plants and vertebrate fauna are available, long-term arthropod datasets are limited, hindering comparisons with better-studied taxa. The Biodiversity of Arthropods of the Laurisilva of the Azores (BALA) project has allowed gathering comprehensive data since 1997 in the Azorean Islands (Portugal), using standardised sampling methods across islands. The dataset includes arthropod counts from epigean (pitfall traps) and canopy-dwelling (beating samples) communities, enriched with species information, biogeographic origins, and IUCN categories. Metadata associated with the sample protocol and events, like sample identifier, archive number, sampled tree species, and trap type are also recorded. The database is available in multiple formats, including Darwin Core, which facilitates the ecological analysis of pressing environmental concerns, such as arthropod population declines and biological invasions. Beneficial microorganisms for corals (BMCs), or probiotics, can enhance coral resilience against stressors in laboratory trials. However, the ability of probiotics to restructure the coral microbiome in situ is yet to be determined. As a first step to elucidate this, we inoculated putative probiotic bacteria (pBMCs) on healthy colonies of Pocillopora verrucosa in situ in the Red Sea, three times per week, during 3 months. pBMCs significantly influenced the coral microbiome, while bacteria of the surrounding seawater and sediment remained unchanged. The inoculated genera Halomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, and Bacillus were significantly enriched in probiotic-treated corals. Furthermore, the probiotic treatment also correlated with an increase in other beneficial groups (e.g., Ruegeria and Limosilactobacillus), and a decrease in potential coral pathogens, such as Vibrio. As all corals (treated and non-treated) remained healthy throughout the experiment, we could not track health improvements or protection against stress. Our data indicate that healthy, and therefore stable, coral microbiomes can be restructured in situ, although repeated and continuous inoculations may be required in these cases. Further, our study provides supporting evidence that, at the studied scale, pBMCs have no detectable off-target effects on the surrounding microbiomes of seawater and sediment near inoculated corals. The flora of the Serra do Cipó (Minas Gerais state, Brazil) has been extensively surveyed and documented in the past decades. Taxonomic novelties are still being revealed from this region, including Stachytarpheta odorata, a new species of Verbenaceae here described and illustrated. This species is a sticky and heavily aromatic shrub, with abundant pedicellate glandular trichomes, and inflorescences with calyx deeply immersed in excavations in the rachis. For its recognition, we provide photographs, a geographic occurrence map, comparisons with the morphologically related species, as well as ecological and taxonomic notes. Stachytarpheta odorata was collected only once in its natural habitat. Expeditions to its type locality and surroundings were carried out with the aim to recollect it but were unsuccessful. Still, fortunately, some individuals of S. odorata are kept cultivated ex situ at a greenhouse of Federal University of Juiz de Fora (Minas Gerais, Brazil). Following the IUCN Red List categories and criteria, the new species may be considered Critically Endangered (CR). If S. odorata is not rediscovered in its natural habitat in the near future, these cultivated individuals could be potentially utilized for reintroduction programmes. Objectives: There is a growing interest in mindfulness-based programs. Yet, research in the area is limited, and little is known about the factors that moderate the effects of these programs. The two-fold aim of this study was (1) to examine the effects of a mindfulness-based program on dispositional mindfulness, inattention and emotional lability, handwriting fluency, spelling accuracy, and composing quality, as well as school achievement; and (2) to evaluate the moderating role of lesson absences, intervention-related knowledge, and social validity. Method: Using a quasi-experimental design, 257 fourth graders were assigned to an experimental group receiving a mindfulness-based program (n = 130) or an active control group receiving a health-based program (n = 127). Both programs were implemented in the classroom for 8 weekly units, which included two 30-min sessions delivered by psychologists, followed by three 5-min sessions delivered by teachers. All children were evaluated before and after the programs. Results: Compared to the control condition, the mindfulness-based program resulted in higher levels of internal and external awareness, and decentering and nonreactivity, as well as better composing quality and mathematics grades. Lesson absences, intervention-related knowledge, and social validity did not moderate the effects of the mindfulness-based program. Conclusions: These findings support the integration of mindfulness practices in primary school as a means to improve children's academic-related skills and ability to be mindful. Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the main complications of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of AKI in Brazilian hospitalized patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and identify the risk factors associated with its onset and those associated with its prognosis. Methods: A prospective cohort study of hospitalized patients diagnosed with COVID-19 at a public and tertiary university hospital in São Paulo from March to December 2020. Results: There were 347 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 52.4% were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and 47.6% were admitted to the wards. The overall incidence of AKI was 46.4%, more frequent in the ICU (68.1% vs 22.4, p < 0.01) and the overall mortality was 36.1%. Acute kidney replacement therapy was indicated in 46.6% of patients with AKI. In the general population, the factors associated with AKI were older age (OR 1.03, CI 1–1.05, p < 0.05), mechanical ventilation (OR 1.23, CI 1.06–1.83, p < 0.05), presence of proteinuria (OR 1.46, CI 1.22–1.93, p < 0.05), and use of vasoactive drugs (OR 1.26, CI 1.07–1.92, p < 0.05). Mortality was higher in the elderly (OR 1.08, CI 1.04–1.11, p < 0.05), in those with AKI (OR 1.12, CI 1.02–2.05, p < 0.05), particularly KDIGO stage 3 AKI (OR 1.10, CI 1.22–2.05, p < 0.05) and in need of mechanical ventilation (OR 1.13, CI 1.03–1.60, p < 0.05). Conclusion: AKI was frequent in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and the factors associated with its development were older age, mechanical ventilation, use of vasoactive drugs, and presence of proteinuria, being a risk factor for death. Species traits are an essential currency in ecology, evolution, biogeography, and conservation biology. However, trait databases are unavailable for most organisms, especially those living in difficult-to-access habitats such as caves and other subterranean ecosystems. We compiled an expert-curated trait database for subterranean spiders in Europe using both literature data (including grey literature published in many different languages) and direct morphological measurements whenever specimens were available to us. We started by updating the checklist of European subterranean spiders, now including 512 species across 20 families, of which at least 192 have been found uniquely in subterranean habitats. For each of these species, we compiled 64 traits. The trait database encompasses morphological measures, including several traits related to subterranean adaptation, and ecological traits referring to habitat preference, dispersal, and feeding strategies. By making these data freely available, we open up opportunities for exploring different research questions, from the quantification of functional dimensions of subterranean adaptation to the study of spatial patterns in functional diversity across European caves. Wildlife trade is a major driver of biodiversity loss, yet whilst the impacts of trade in some species are relatively well-known, some taxa, such as many invertebrates are often overlooked. Here we explore global patterns of trade in the arachnids, and detected 1,264 species from 66 families and 371 genera in trade. Trade in these groups exceeds millions of individuals, with 67% coming directly from the wild, and up to 99% of individuals in some genera. For popular taxa, such as tarantulas up to 50% are in trade, including 25% of species described since 2000. CITES only covers 30 (2%) of the species potentially traded. We mapped the percentage and number of species native to each country in trade. To enable sustainable trade, better data on species distributions and better conservation status assessments are needed. The disparity between trade data sources highlights the need to expand monitoring if impacts on wild populations are to be accurately gauged and the impacts of trade minimised. Mass media plays an important role in the construction and circulation of risk perception associated with animals. Widely feared groups such as spiders frequently end up in the spotlight of traditional and social media. We compiled an expert-curated global database on the online newspaper coverage of human-spider encounters over the past ten years (2010–2020). This database includes information about the location of each human-spider encounter reported in the news article and a quantitative characterisation of the content—location, presence of photographs of spiders and bites, number and type of errors, consultation of experts, and a subjective assessment of sensationalism. In total, we collected 5348 unique news articles from 81 countries in 40 languages. The database refers to 211 identified and unidentified spider species and 2644 unique human-spider encounters (1121 bites and 147 as deadly bites). To facilitate data reuse, we explain the main caveats that need to be made when analysing this database and discuss research ideas and questions that can be explored with it. Annually, more than 2500 ornamental fish species are traded worldwide. Forty percent of these are from marine water. Some 98% of marine species are wild-caught from their natural habitat, and the majority subsequently exported. Wild fish frequently carry pathogens, which could induce diseases after the stress of capture. Neobenedenia melleni is a platyhelminth that mainly attaches to the skin and eyes of the host. It provokes dermal inflammation, epidermal loss, skin depigmentation, reduction in the number of mucous cells, and, consequently, decreased mucus protection, and declining immunological barriers. This makes fish susceptible to secondary infections. A total of 47 wild reef fish from a retailer were examined, suspected to be infected with ectoparasites. The morphological identification revealed N. melleni as a monogenean agent. One monogenean specimen was collected from the eye of each of the 40 fish analyzed to evaluate possible bacterial secondary infections using the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) technique. The MALDI-TOF MS identified that 59% of monogenean collected from the eyes had bacteria, including some pathogenic to fish. This led us to believe that the ectoparasite can be a possible mechanical vector of pathogenic bacteria for fish culture and maintenance. During the preparation of the treatment of the genus Lippia for the Flora do Brasil 2020 online project, dozens of names were found in need of typification or typification clarifications. In this context, lectotypes are designated for 18 names (L. asperrima, L. cordata, L. dracocephaloides, L. elliptica, L. florida, L. glabrescens, L. hederifolia, L. herbacea, L. hermannioides, L. hirta, L. iodophylla, L. maximiliani, L. microcephala, L. oxycnemis, L. primulina var. goyazensis, L. pseudothea, L. reticulata, and L. rhodocnemis), and a second-step lectotypification is made for L. aristata. A neotype is proposed for L. corymbosa, whereas the erroneous application of the term "holotype" is corrected to lectotype for the names L. pumila and L. turnerifolia. Summary: The lectotypification of the Linnaean name Verbena orubica L. is discussed. Based on thorough study of original material and pertinent literature, a critical review is provided and a lectotype is designated upon a specimen from the Clifford herbarium. This material preserves the current application of the name to a species of Stachytarpheta Vahl. Bacterial diseases are common in ornamental fish, more frequently associated with ubiquitous bacteria from the aquarium environment. The disease can lead to fish mortality and cause high economic losses if not rapidly controlled. The aim of this study was to identify the main causative bacterial agents of infection in ornamental fish with different clinical signs. A total of 126 freshwater fish, from 12 families and 38 species, with clinical signs were collected in a wholesaler in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Samples were taken from the eye, skin ulcers, kidneys, and gills, plated on MacConkey, CHROMagar Orientation, and blood agar and incubated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Bacterial identification was performed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. From the 126 studied animals, 112 were positive for bacterial isolation. Among the positive animals, 32.1% presented infection caused by a single bacterial species, while in the remaining 67.9%, two to six different bacterial species were identified. A total of 259 bacterial strains were obtained and classified among 46 bacterial species. The species of higher frequency were Aeromonas veronii (26.3%), Aeromonas hydrophilla (16.2%), Shewanella putrefaciens (7.3%), Citrobacter freundii (8.1%), Vibrio albensis (5.8%), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (4.2%). Understanding the causes behind species richness and endemicity is fundamental to explain biodiversity and assist conservation management, especially in biodiversity hotspots like the Mediterranean Basin. Here we investigate the patterns in Iberian forest spider communities and the processes behind their assembly, by testing hypotheses about the effects of climate and habitat on species richness, endemicity and structure of communities at different spatial scales, and about how microhabitat and dispersal affect the level of endemicity of species. We studied 16 spider communities in Iberian Quercus forests from different climatic zones, applying a standardised sampling protocol. We examined the contribution of habitat, climate, and geography to the differences in the composition of spider communities across spatial scales using distance-based redundancy analysis models (dbRDA) and principal coordinates of neighbour matrices (PCNM). We assessed the effects of the same variables on the endemicity of communities (measured by a weighted index), and tested the correlation between the microhabitat and the ballooning frequency (obtained from bibliography), and the endemicity of species through generalised linear models. Spider communities formed two groups—one southern and one northern—based on similarity in species composition. Precipitation and temperature were inversely related with the number of species while geography and forest type explained the compositional similarities between communities at different spatial scales. Endemicity of communities increased with temperature and decreased with precipitation, whereas species endemicity decreased with ballooning frequency. Our findings illustrate how niche-related processes may drive spider diversity while dispersal determines species distribution and identity and, ultimately, community composition. From a conservation viewpoint, when maximising species richness is incompatible with prioritising endemicity, the criteria to follow may depend on the geographic scale at which decisions are made. Purpose: Obese patients have neurodegeneration of the optic nerve demonstrated by decreased peripapillary nerve fiber layer. Whether bariatric surgery reverses this neurodegenerative process has not been explored. We aimed to evaluate the impact of bariatric surgery in the structure of the retina and optic nerve. Methods: Multicentric observational study. Obese patients scheduled for bariatric surgery were consecutively recruited and included in the study and evaluated before and 6–12 months after the intervention. The retinal structure was evaluated as retinal thickness in the different retinal layers in the foveal, perifoveal, and parafoveal regions using optical coherence tomography. Choroidal thickness and optic nerve retinal nerve fiber layer thickness were also evaluated. Results: Eighty eyes from 40 participants were included. Globally, we found a significant thickening of the retina after bariatric surgery (foveal: 273.5 (21.5) μm vs 280.0 (28.8) μm, p < 0.001; parafoveal 332.4 ± 17.8 μm vs 336.6 ± 15.9 μm, p = 0.003; perifoveal: 293.4 ± 13.8 μm vs 295.7 ± 14.9 μm; p = 0.001), whereas no significant differences were found for the ganglion cell layer, choroid, or peripapillary nerve fiber layer thickness. The retinal thickening was confined to inner retinal layers and was independent of the diabetic status of the patients. After multivariate adjustment, HbA1c variation, preoperative C-peptide, preoperative hypertension, preoperative OSA, and preoperative LDL and TG levels seem to be clinical predictors of retinal thickening. Conclusions: We found a significant thickening of the retina after bariatric surgery that was independent of the diabetic status. Summary: The taxonomic identity of Stachytarpheta confertifolia Moldenke, S. chapadensis Moldenke and S. confertifolia var. puberulenta Moldenke is revised. The protologues, herbarium collections and literature were thoroughly examined, and we re-establish S. chapadensis and consider S. confertifolia var. puberulenta as a new synonym of S. chapadensis. Purpose: Primary osteosarcoma of the spine is a rare osseous tumour. En bloc resection, in contrast to intralesional resection, is the only procedure able to provide Enneking appropriate (EA) margins, which has improved local control and survival of patients with primary osteosarcoma of the spine. The objective of this study is to compare the risk of local recurrence, metastases development and survival in patients with primary osteosarcoma of the spine submitted to Enneking appropriate (EA) and Enneking inappropriate (EI) procedures.Methods: A systematic search was performed on EBSCO, PubMed and Web of Science, between 1966 and 2018, to identify studies evaluating patients submitted to resection of primary osteosarcoma of the spine. Two reviewers independently assessed all reports. The outcomes were local recurrence, metastases development and survival at 12, 24 and 60 months.Results: Five studies (108 patients) were included for systematic review. These studies support the conclusion that EA procedure has a lower local recurrence rate (RR 0.33, 95% CI 0.17-0.66), a lower metastases development rate (RR 0.39, 95% CI 0.17-0.89) and a higher survival rate at 24 months (RR 1.78, 95% CI 1.24-2.55) and 60 months (RR 1.97, 95% CI 1.14-3.42) of follow-up; however, at 12 months, there is a non-significant difference.Conclusions: EA procedure increases the ratio of remission and survival after 24 months of follow-up. Multidisciplinary oncologic groups should weigh the morbidity of an en bloc resection, knowing that in the first year the probability of survival is the same for EA and EI procedures. Background: Bone giant cell tumors, although benign, may be locally aggressive and cause severe morbidity; in some cases, they can also disseminate at distance and cause death. Denosumab has been approved to treat unresectable bone giant cell tumors or when surgery is likely to result in severe morbidity. Furthermore, its curative potential has been recently suggested. Case: An 18-year-old girl presented with a spinal giant cell tumor at T9. Neo-adjuvant denosumab was administered for 9 months with great clinical and analytical tolerance. A posterior left T9 costo-transversectomy and vertebral body curettage was performed and the spine stabilized. Interestingly, histopathology examination of the surgical specimens found no evidence of tumoral cells. Denosumab was reinstated until completion of 12 months of treatment. Conclusion: Denosumab has an important but still limited role in the treatment of spinal giant cell tumors. Here, it resulted in complete histological resolution of the tumor, potentially widening its applicability from a strictly neo-adjuvant to a curative role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a serious condition that is frequently associated with irreversibly vision loss, having a higher incidence among obese women. Our aims were to screen subclinical IIH in obese patients scheduled to bariatric surgery using peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and to evaluate if the findings demand the possible need of a preoperative evaluation in this population. Methods: This study included 111 eyes from 36 obese patients (86% female, body mass index > 35 kg/m2) scheduled to bariatric surgery and 20 non-obese (body mass index < 25 kg/m2) age-matched controls. We measured sectorial and mean RNFL thickness in a 3.5-mm-diameter circular scan centered on the optic nerve head, using optical coherence tomography (Heidelberg Spectralis SD-OCT) in all participants. Multivariate linear regression was used for adjustments. Results: No patient had subclinical IIH corresponding to increased RNFL thickness. However, in obese individuals, global peripapillary RNFL was thinner than in controls (104 ± 6 μm versus 99 ± 12 μm, p = 0.005). Overall, RNFL thickness was superior in the control group for all sectors. The differences reached significance for the nasal, temporal, superior temporal, and inferior temporal sectors. These differences remained even after adjusting for possible confounders (hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, age, sleep apnea syndrome, and sex). Conclusions: Routine screening asymptomatic obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery for IIH using RNFL thickness was not clinically relevant in our study. However, we found that severe obesity is associated with neurodegeneration independently of the other components of the metabolic syndrome, what may justify future investigation on the need of monitoring these patients. Megalocytiviruses have a worldwide distribution, causing serious economic loss to the global aquaculture industry. They also present a threat to ornamental fish trade because megalocytiviral infections have unspecified symptoms, making early diagnosis difficult. In this study, 100 ornamental fish from 24 different species were tested by PCR for megalocytivirus, with a 47% positive rate being identified. Phylogenetic reconstruction, based on the major capsid protein (MCP) gene, clustered all Brazilian samples into a single clade, showing identity values ranging from 99% to 100% when compared to each other. Islands harbour evolutionary and ecologically unique biota, which are currently disproportionately threatened by a multitude of anthropogenic factors, including habitat loss, invasive species and climate change. Native forests on oceanic islands are important refugia for endemic species, many of which are rare and highly threatened. Long-term monitoring schemes for those biota and ecosystems are urgently needed: (i) to provide quantitative baselines for detecting changes within island ecosystems, (ii) to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation and management actions, and (iii) to identify general ecological patterns and processes using multiple island systems as repeated ‘natural experiments’. In this contribution, we call for a Global Island Monitoring Scheme (GIMS) for monitoring the remaining native island forests, using bryophytes, vascular plants, selected groups of arthropods and vertebrates as model taxa. As a basis for the GIMS, we also present new, optimized monitoring protocols for bryophytes and arthropods that were developed based on former standardized inventory protocols. Effective inventorying and monitoring of native island forests will require: (i) permanent plots covering diverse ecological gradients (e.g. elevation, age of terrain, anthropogenic disturbance); (ii) a multiple-taxa approach that is based on standardized and replicable protocols; (iii) a common set of indicator taxa and community properties that are indicative of native island forests’ welfare, building on, and harmonized with existing sampling and monitoring efforts; (iv) capacity building and training of local researchers, collaboration and continuous dialogue with local stakeholders; and (v) long-term commitment by funding agencies to maintain a global network of native island forest monitoring plots. In this work we revisit the MIT bag model to describe quark matter within both the usual Fermi-Dirac and the Tsallis statistics. We verify the effects of the non-additivity of the latter by analysing two different pictures: the first order phase transition of the QCD phase diagram and stellar matter properties. While the QCD phase diagram is visually affected by the Tsallis statistics, the resulting effects on quark star macroscopic properties are barely noticed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To understand the role of native ladybird biodiversity in habitat susceptibility on the establishment and spread of Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), we characterized and compared European communities where they had established and where they had not established. The local communities of ladybirds were characterized in terms of biodiversity, the average difference in body mass between H. axyridis and other coccinellid species and the rarefied total body mass of all individuals (as a surrogate for aphid abundance and availability). The lack of success of H. axyridis in the Azores, as well as its low success in Southern Europe, can be explained by a combination of resource availability and intraguild competition. We suggest the success of this invasive alien species to establish in a habitat depends first on resource availability and second when most direct competitors for limited resources are absent or are uncommon. Proleptus obtusus Dujardin, 1845 is the most common parasite infecting the gut of the lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula, Linnaeus). This nematode is trophically transmitted from an intermediate crustacean host to the definitive elasmobranch host. Sexual and age-related differences in habitat occupancy and feeding behaviour of the lesser spotted dogfish make this parasite-host dyad ideal for testing which aspects of host biology influence parasite transmission. Here, the relationship between P. obtusus burden and host condition, sex and age were investigated in lesser spotted dogfish captured in the Northeast Atlantic. Prevalence of P. obtusus was of 94.8% with a mean abundance of 23.3 worms per host. Our results indicate that parasite burden is best explained by the interaction between ontogenetic differences in foraging behaviour of the lesser spotted dogfish and seasonal differences in prey availability. Oceanic islands host a high proportion of the world's endemic species. Many such species are at risk of extinction owing to habitat degradation and loss, biological invasions and other threats, but little is known about the effects of climate change on island native biodiversity. The Azorean archipelago provides a unique opportunity to study species-climate-change relationships. We used ensemble forecasting to evaluate the current and future distribution of well-studied endemic and native bryophytes (19 species), endemic vascular plants (59 species) and endemic arthropods (128 species), for two of the largest Azorean Islands, Terceira and São Miguel. Using a Regional Climate Model (CIELO), and assuming the extreme scenario RCP8.5, we examined changes in the potential distributions of the species and possible loss of climate space for them. Models projected that 23 species (11 %) could lose all adequate climate on either one or both islands. Five additional species were projected to lose ≥90 % of climate space. In total, 90 % of the species were projected to lose climate space: 79 % of bryophytes, 93 % of vascular plants and 91 % of arthropods. We also found for vascular plants and arthropods a tendency for upward shift in altitude in their suitable climate space, while for bryophytes the shift was towards the coastal areas. Understanding the processes that lead to successful invasions is essential for the management of exotic species. We aimed to assess the comparative relevance of habitat (both at local and at regional scale) and plant features on the species richness of local canopy spiders of both indigenous and exotic species. In an oceanic island, Azores archipelago, we collected spiders in 97 transects belonging to four habitat types according to the degree of habitat disturbance, four types of plants with different colonisation origin (indigenous vs. exotic), and four types of plants according to the complexity of the vegetation structure. Generalised linear mixed models and linear regressions were performed separately for indigenous and exotic species at the local and regional landscape scales. At the local scale, habitat and plant origin explained the variation in the species richness of indigenous spiders, whereas exotic spider richness was poorly correlated to habitat and plant structure. The surrounding landscape matrix substantially affected indigenous spiders, but did not affect exotic spiders, with the exception of the negative effect exerted by native forests on the richness of exotic species. Our results revealed that the local effect of habitat type, plant origin and plant structure explain variations in the species richness observed at a regional scale. These results shed light on the mechanistic processes behind the role of habitat types in invasions, i.e., plant fidelity and plant structure are revealed as key factors, suggesting that native forests may act as physical barriers to the colonisation of exotic spiders. Objective: To develop an analysis method that is sensitive to non-model-conform responses often encountered in ultra-high field presurgical planning fMRI. Using the consistency of time courses over a number of experiment repetitions, it should exclude low quality runs and generate activation maps that reflect the reliability of responses. Materials and methods: 7 T fMRI data were acquired from six healthy volunteers: three performing purely motor tasks and three a visuomotor task. These were analysed with the proposed approach (UNBIASED) and the GLM. Results: UNBIASED results were generally less affected by false positive results than the GLM. Runs that were identified as being of low quality were confirmed to contain little or no activation. In two cases, regions were identified as activated in UNBIASED but not GLM results. Signal changes in these areas were time-locked to the task, but were delayed or transient. Conclusion: UNBIASED is shown to be a reliable means of identifying consistent task-related signal changes regardless of response timing. In presurgical planning, UNBIASED could be used to rapidly generate reliable maps of the consistency with which eloquent brain regions are activated without recourse to task timing and despite modified hemodynamics. For the first time ever, the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Index for habitat types was calculated for an entire country, Finland. The RLIs were based on species threat assessments from 2000 and 2010 and included habitat definitions for all 10,131 species of 12 organism groups. The RLIs were bootstrapped to track statistically significant changes. The RLI changes of species grouped by habitats were negative for all habitat types except for forests and rural biotopes which showed a stable trend. Trends of beetles and true bugs were positive in rural and forest habitats. Other 16 observed trends of species group and habitat combinations were negative. Several trends observed were in accordance with studies focusing on particular taxa and habitats, and drivers for their change. This study demonstrates the usefulness of the RLI as a tool for observing habitat change based on species threat assessment data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epithelioid angiosarcoma (EA) of bone is a very uncommon high-grade sarcoma with an unpredictable clinical course, high metastasis rate and poor prognosis. It is extremely rare in the spine. Delayed or missed diagnosis is frequent, and histological and immunohistochemical confirmation of diagnosis is essential. Only few cases of epithelioid angiosarcoma of the spine are described. Recommended treatment is wide en bloc resection with or without adjuvants. We first performed a systematic review and included eight papers on vertebral EA (from 48 titles). In two cases, a total en bloc resection with adjuvant therapy and surgical reconstruction procedure was performed but only one had successful safe margins. After palliative radiotherapy alone, one patient died. Complications are associated to their vascular nature. Second, we present a rare case of EA at the third lumbar vertebra in a 68-year-old male. L3 vertebrectomy and reconstruction was performed through a posterior approach. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis of resected tumor confirmed high-grade EA. Prognosis was extremely poor due to paravertebral extension of this malignant aggressive tumor. The patient did not recover motor deficits. He presented a nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis originated in urinary tract infection and died 1 month postoperatively. In literature, only few spinal EA are described. Especially in the spine, it represents a diagnostic and surgical challenge. Survival rate of these tumors is unknown but an early diagnosis is essential to allow a successful wide resection. We identify four issues in the decision framework for species conservation management under climate change proposed by Shoo et al. () Clim Chan 119:239-246 and suggest ways to address them. First, binary-decision flow charts require Yes/No answers, which are not appropriate in most conservation decisions. A quantitative framework is preferable and action-guidance should be obtained even when the realistic answer to some questions remains 'we simply do not know'. Second, the proposed flow chart imposes an a priori order of precedence and does not explicitly allow simultaneous actions. A workable framework should enable optimal allocation between multiple kinds of conservation efforts and permit complementary actions. Third, the probability of success, co-benefit to non-target species, and cost are unlikely to have a simple, consistent relationship across taxa. These variables need to be assessed case-by-case for each conservation measure and species. The IUCN Red List of threatened species is biased towards vertebrate animals, a major limitation on its utility for overall biodiversity assessment. There is a need to increase the representation of invertebrates (currently 21 % of species assessed on the List; <1 % of all invertebrates). A prioritisation system of terrestrial and freshwater groups is presented here, categorising taxa by species richness, assessment practicality, value for human land use and bioindication, and potential to act as conservation flagships. 25 major taxonomic groupings were identified as priorities, including the Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Onycophora. Of these, the high-level taxa that emerge as highest priorities are Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), Araneae (spiders), Mantophasmatodea (heelwalkers), Plecoptera (stoneflies), non-marine Mollusca (Bivalvia and Gastropoda), Trichoptera (caddisflies), Coleoptera (beetles), Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), Oligochaetes (earthworms), Orthoptera (grasshoppers and crickets), Decapoda (crayfish, crabs, shrimps) and Diptera (flies). Of these Red Listing is well advanced for Decapoda, freshwater Mollusca and Odonata. This leaves eight higher taxa with currently a minimum or patchy Red List assessment coverage. We recommend that Red List assessments in future focus on these groups, as well as completion of assessments for terrestrial Molluscs and Odonata. However, we also recommend realism, and as some of groups are very large, it will be necessary to focus on subsets such as certain functionally important or charismatic taxa or on a sampled subset which is representative of a larger taxon. The aims of this study are to make a more precise identification of the etiologic agent of a nasal granuloma in a cat, to verify the susceptibility to the antifungal drugs: ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole, amphotericin B and the proper treatment. Part of the granuloma's fragment was removed, added to a saline solution and sent to the Laboratory of Mycology. The solution was then seeded in Sabouraud dextrose agar, and the yeast was primarily identified by the traditional methods. The confirmation of the specie Cryptococcus gattii and its molecular type were performed using the PCR-RFLP molecular techniques. The antifungal susceptibility was verified by using the E-test method, and the cat was treated with itraconazole associated with 5-flucytosine. The isolated strain was identified as C. gattii type VGII and was susceptible to all antifungal drugs tested. The treatment with itraconazole associated with 5-flucytosine led to the cure of granulomatous lesions in the feline after 6 months. The characterization and molecular investigation of this microorganism are relevant because they could help us better understand the epidemiology of the infection and to guide us to treat properly the disease. The largest standardised database available to date for arthropods in native forests of the Azores archipelago was used to determine the minimum optimal set of native forest fragments needed to accomplish four different targets of species occurrence (presence-absence) and abundance (20, 50 and 80%) using different groups of arthropods and all data combined. The results showed that occurrence and 20% abundance targets gave similar optimal solutions for most of the groups considered. At least one fragment on each of the seven studied islands was required to accomplish any occurrence and abundance target. To achieve 80% of abundance for all species, all fragments were necessary and to guarantee 50% of the overall abundance of endemics, 17 out of 18 native forests were needed. A suggestion is made to apply a measure of biotic integrity related to disturbance to select, among alternative optimal solutions, the set of areas that will help to guarantee the viability of populations. The Iberian Peninsula is recognized for its high levels of species richness, rarity and endemicity. Our main aim was to study biogeographic patterns of spiders in coastal dunes along a gradient of mediterraneity. Distance-decay of similarity, nestedness and co-occurrence metrics were used to explore spider' distribution patterns. A similarity analysis was performed in order to obtain a hierarchical classification of sites. Indicator species analysis was conducted to identify indicator species for the various clustering levels of the site typology. The differentiation among assemblages was further explored by non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and analysis of similarities (ANOSIM). Assemblages' similarity among sites decreased with climatic/geographic distance. The observed values of nestedness metrics (T and NODF) were not significant, while the co-occurrence metrics (C-score and Checkerboard units) were higher than expected by chance. Cluster analysis showed that spider' assemblages were structured along a gradient from North to South, forming four geographically distinct clusters. ANOSIM tests and NMDS supported the biogeographic patterns identified by cluster analysis. Several indicator species were found for the different levels of the hierarchic site typology. Spider assemblages revealed a high degree of biogeographical structure along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The coast is a 'biogeographic crossroad', encompassing faunistic elements of different origins. The hierarchic typology of sites is generally consistent with the major biogeographic regions and the thermoclimatic belts recognized for the region. The $$\epsilon$$-Depth ANT Explorer ( $$\epsilon$$-) algorithm applied to a multiple objective optimization problem is presented in this paper. This method is a hybridization of the ant colony optimization algorithm with a depth search procedure, putting together an oriented/limited depth search. A particular design of the pheromone set of rules is suggested for these kinds of optimization problems, which are an adaptation of the single objective case. Six versions with incremental features are presented as an evolutive path, beginning in a single colony approach, where no depth search is applied, to the final $$\epsilon$$-. Versions are compared among themselves in a set of instances of the multiple objective Traveling Salesman Problem. Oceanic islands have been the grand stage of documented extinctions. In view of limited resources, efficient prioritization is crucial to avoid the extinction of taxa. This work lists the top 100 management priority species for the European archipelagos of the Macaronesian region (Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands), taking into account both their protection priority and their management feasibility. Bryophytes, vascular plants, molluscs, arthropods and vertebrates were scored by species experts following two sets of criteria: (i) protection priority, including ecological value, singularity, public institutions’ management responsibilities and social value; (ii) management feasibility, including threats knowledge and control feasibility, external socio-economical support for management and biological recovery potential. Environmental managers weighted the same criteria according to their management importance. Final species scores were determined by the combination of both species valuation and criteria weighting. Vascular plants dominate the Top 100 list, followed by arthropods and vertebrates. The majority of listed taxa are endemic to one archipelago or even to a single island. The management feasibility criteria did not dictate that all taxa must be eminently endangered, as for most of the species it should be relatively easy to control threats. The main advantages of this process are the independent participation of scientists and conservation managers, the inclusion of criteria on both protection priority and management feasibility and the taxonomically unbiased nature of the process. This study provides a potentially useful biodiversity conservation tool for the Macaronesian archipelagos that could be readily implemented by the respective regional governments in future legislation.
