Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis can facilitate surveillance of invasive aquatic plant's distribution. However, it is still questionable how accurately eDNA concentration reflects and predicts aquatic plant abundance. Although previous studies investigated relationships between aquatic plant eDNA concentration and their abundance in freshwater environments, the conclusions were not consistent between the studies. Here, a systematic literature search was conducted to summarize previous findings and meta-analyze the relationships between eDNA concentration and aquatic plant abundance. Hierarchical random-effect meta-analyses showed significant positive, but weak, relationships between them (r = 0.45 in average), meaning that eDNA concentration accounted for approximately 20% of the observed variation in plant abundance. Additionally, the relationships tended to be rather stronger in the field than in the laboratory environments, which may be attributed to limited quantifiability and species specificity of plant coverage as abundance metrics, heterogeneous dispersion of plant eDNA particles, and phenology-dependent eDNA production from plant bodies. The finding indicates that aquatic plant eDNA particles could reflect more regional (but not local) abundance, and thus, eDNA-based abundance estimation might be more appropriate at a broader scale (i.e., lower spatial resolution). Aquatic plants are crucial for aquatic ecosystems and their species and distribution reflect aquatic ecosystem health. Remote sensing technology has been used to monitor plant distributions over large scales. However, the fine identification of the species of aquatic higher plants is challenging due to large temporal-spatial changes in optical water body properties and small spectral differences among plant species. Here, an aquatic plant identification method was developed by constructing a decision tree file in the C4.5 algorithm based on the canopy spectra of eight plants in the Changguangxi Wetland water area from hyperspectral remote sensing technology. The method was used to monitor the distribution of different plants in the Changguangxi Wetland area and two other water areas. The results showed that the spectral characteristics of plants were enhanced by calculating their spectral index, thereby improving the comparability among different species. The total recognition accuracy of the constructed decision tree file for eight types of plants was 85.02%. Nymphaea tetragona, Pontederia cordata, and Nymphoides peltatum had the highest recognition accuracy and Eichhornia crassipes was the lowest. The specific species and distributions of aquatic plants were consistent with the water quality in the area. The eutrophication of aquatic systems resulting from human activities frequently leads to phytoplankton blooms, which decrease water transparency and therefore limit light availability for aquatic plants. However, several submerged macrophytes are able to grow despite the light competition pressure exerted by phytoplankton. Photosynthetic performance and plant morphology may be key traits allowing plant species to tolerate phytoplankton-induced light limitation in eutrophic systems. The aim of this study was to explore how morphological and photosynthetic traits allow submerged macrophytes to withstand the stress induced by decreased light in eutrophic systems. Morphological and photosynthetic traits were measured in 7 species of submerged macrophytes collected from mesotrophic to hypertrophic shallow lakes (Dombes, Ain, France). Then, we determined whether these traits were related to species occurrence in lakes according to depth and water turbidity. This study highlighted 2 strategies potentially resulting in a trade-off between morphological and photosynthetic traits. The first strategy was tolerance to reduced light and was characterized by a higher investment in leaf area and photosynthetic efficiency (initial slope of photosynthetic activity measured at low light intensities), allowing plants to use low amounts of light energy. The second strategy was to avoid the regions of reduced light and was characterized by a greater investment in vertical growth and maximum photosynthesis at high light intensities. The morphological and physiological traits favoured in turbid lakes corresponded to the avoidance strategy with a low compensation point, allowing plants to grow to the photic zone to reach the water areas where light is at a maximum. Small species exhibiting a light stress tolerance strategy may be maintained in turbid lakes subjected to disturbances, offering a window of opportunity for successful recruitment and reproduction. The aim of this study was to assess aquatic plant distribution patterns in a Mediterranean temporary pond network (Doñana National Park, SW Spain). We analyzed differences in species composition employing multivariate ordination techniques; we specifically examined the importance of hydroperiod and physical and chemical variables in the five geomorphological areas across which the pond network is spread. The ponds significantly segregated along a north-south gradient, matching the segregation pattern of the aquatic plant assemblages. Ponds in the three northernmost areas showed higher levels of species richness than ponds in the two southernmost areas. In the north, ponds were present at higher densities, spanned a broader hydroperiod range, and had lower conductivity levels; these features were associated with the presence of wet-meadow species and larger numbers of submerged and emergent species. In the south, alkaline waters were mainly associated with different charophyte species, and the predominance of long-hydroperiod ponds helped in increasing the number of floating species. Managed ponds, which had been artificially deepened, contributed to increase pond heterogeneity and hydroperiod breadth across the entire network. The aim of this paper is to study the relationships between the physical features of rivers and the distribution of macrophyte vegetation. Field work was undertaken at 207 stations along the Scorff River and its tributaries, a salmon river system in southern Brittany (western France). The physical features were considered using a principal component analysis (PCA). Stepwise multiple regression models made it possible to assess their relationships with the botanical data. The first five axes of the physical PCA (used as explicative variables) were initially linked to the most frequently surveyed species, then to their eco-morphological types, and, finally to Arber’s (1920. The aquatic plant communities in two Irish canals were examined between 1990 and 1994 to investigate the factors that influence plant species distribution and community structure. Four main aquatic plant groups were identified by TWINSPAN. Two groups were characterised by bankside vegetation, including Carex sp., Juncus bulbosus and Scirpus lacustris. Large mixed assemblages of emergent, floating leaved, free floating and submerged plant species characterised the third group. The fourth group was species poor and was dominated by Cladophora sp. Canonical Correspondence Analysis identified weed control history, total oxidised nitrogen, water colour, distance from feeder stream and distance from summit as the factors that potentially influenced the distribution of plant species. Macrophytes were monitored in 48 headwater rivers in Flanders (Belgium). Only 26 sites had macrophyte vegetation, which was used to calculate five different indices and scores. These indices originated from UK, France, Czech Republic and Germany. Macrophytes were significantly correlated with a number of habitat variables, such as transect size, river width, slope, Huet zonation, distance to source, shadowing and average depth. For the substrate there were significant negative correlations with the fine particle sizes and a positive correlation with the coarse particles. A multivariate analysis of the macrophytes in these headwaters showed three groupings, essentially separated on basis of water hardness and pH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three species of Elodea ( Elodea canadensis Michaux, E. nuttallii St John and E. ernstiae St John) have colonized Europe from the American continent. All three arrived in the Alsatian Rhine floodplain (north-eastern France) soon after their arrival in Europe, i.e. in the mid-19th century for E. canadensis, and in the mid-20th century for E. nuttallii and E. ernstiae. The paper investigates the present distribution of Elodea spp. in the floodplain by quantifying the species’ respective occurrences and by describing their habitats. The study further focuses on E. nuttallii which is presently colonizing other parts of Europe. It analyses whether it has continued to expand in the Alsatian Rhine floodplain during recent decades, and it checks whether changes in the abundance of E. nuttallii have had an impact on species richness of water plant communities. E.␣nuttallii has been found to be at present one of the most dominant and most frequent aquatic plant species in the study sector, while E. canadensis and E. ernstiae are less abundant. The species’ distributions differ with regard to water chemistry and water temperature: E. canadensis occurs in oligo-mesotrophic, rather stenothermic habitats, whereas E. nuttallii and E. ernstiae can be encountered in meso- to eutrophic sites with little or no arrival of stenothermic ground water. By comparing successive vegetation relevés from the same sites the study revealed further that the distribution of E. nuttallii has been stable in recent decades, despite local fluctuations in abundance. No relationship could be established between those fluctuations and changes in species richness or type of local plant communities. The sum of the results suggests that the expansion of E. nuttallii in the Alsatian Rhine floodplain had been completed prior to the study period. The species’ present distribution in the study sector as well as its position in local plant communities might therefore be considered a model for what can be expected to happen in areas where E.␣ nuttallii has only recently arrived. Using environmental parameters we studied the distribution of two endangered species, Hydrocharis morsus-ranae L. and Rumex hydrolapathum Huds., in a low-lying marshland of the Swiss Plateau, a region in which aquatic vegetation is particularly threatened. A large part of the study site is regularly mown by a machine for site management purposes. The caterpillar mower digs ruts, which are especially pronounced along the tracks used to reach the mown compartment. To assess the effects of site management on these species, we have tested six environmental parameters (vegetation unit, water conductivity, water supply indicated by altitude, time elapsed since the last cut, distance from major ruts and disturbance of major ruts) that can potentially influence plant distribution. All the plots of these two species have been found in mowed compartment, which seems to indicate a correlation between site management operations and occurrences. We determined the distribution of macroalgae in Hog Island Bay, a shallow coastal lagoon in Virginia, USA, seasonally at 12 sites from 1998 to 2000 and at 3 representative sites from 2000 to 2002. We analyzed macroalgal biomass, taxonomic richness, and abundance of two non-native species, the cryptic invader Gracilaria vermiculophylla and the conspicuous Codium fragile, with respect to season, location (mainland, mid lagoon, barrier island sites), and elevation (intertidal, subtidal). Taxonomic richness, total algal biomass, and nonnative biomass peaked in the summer months when temperature and light availability were highest. A few stress tolerant and ephemeral algae dominated the algal assemblage. G. vermiculophylla constituted 74% of the entire algal biomass, was the most abundant alga in all seasons, locations, and elevation levels, and was positively correlated with taxonomic richness and abundance of filamentous species. Ulva curvata, Bryopsis plumosa, and C. fragile accounted for an additional 16% of the algal biomass. There are distinct habitats in Hog Island Bay that can be classified into low diversity-low biomass regions near the mainland and barrier islands and high diversity-high biomass regions in the open mid lagoon, where abundant shells for attachment and intermediate levels of water column nutrients and turbidity likely create better growth conditions. Taxonomic richness and biomass were higher in subtidal than intertidal zones, presumably due to lower desiccation stress. This study provides an example of how a single invasive species can dominate an entire assemblage, both in terms of biomass (being most abundant in all seasons, locations, and tidal levels) and species richness (correlating positively with epiphytic filamentous taxa). By adding hard-substratum structural complexity to a relatively homogenous soft-substratum system, G. vermiculophylla increases substratum availability for attachment and entanglement of other algal species and enhances local diversity. Without widespread and abundant G. vermiculophylla, taxa like Polysiphonia, Ceramium, Bryopsis, Ectocarpus, and Champia would likely be much less common.
