This paper outlines the current ethical guidelines for electronic therapy services, and the sufficiency and implications of these guidelines in a culturally diverse population as found in the United States. The paper limits the discussion of ethical deliberations to: what is considered adequate competency to practice mental health therapy electronically; the disclosure and identity verification requirements; confidentiality issues when different social norms exist; the social responsibility of public institutions or individuals; and issues that relate to miscommunication due to different cultural or educational backgrounds. It concludes that since E-Therapy helps to reach underserved populations and significantly reduces costs associated with mental health services, compliance with ethical guidelines must be enforced to benefit from the latest communication technologies. This paper is relevant for various professions related to psychology and psychotherapy, including pastors and pastoral counselors, because various forms of E-therapy are emerging in the 21st century and can serve as resources for 'E-pastoral counseling.' Public stigma is one barrier to accessing behavioral health care among Vietnamese Americans. To explore and identify features of culture and acculturation that influence behavioral health-related stigma, six focus groups were conducted with Vietnamese American participants in three generational groups and eleven key informant interviews were conducted with Vietnamese community leaders, traditional healers, and behavioral health professionals. Data were analyzed using Link and Phelan's (Annu Rev Sociol 27(1):363–385, 2001) work on stigma as an organizing theoretical framework. Findings underline several key cultural and generational factors that intersect to affect perceptions, beliefs, and stigma about mental health treatment. In particular, participants in the youngest groups highlighted that while they recognized the value of mental health services, they felt culturally limited in their access. This appeared to be closely related to intergenerational communication about mental health. The current project describes themes emerging from a set of focus groups with 20 Latina mothers (aged 25 to over 45) who reflected on the transition to adulthood for their daughters. As community stakeholders residing in a large city in the Southern USA, these mothers shared their perspectives and advice on supporting adolescent girls during the transition to adulthood. Qualitative coding revealed four key aspects of the transition that were important to these mothers: ethnic identity, involvement of others, communication with daughters, and individual personality characteristics. We discuss their reflections with regard to the development of more culturally relevant programs for Latina girls coming of age within the USA context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research has consistently found an association between marital distress and poor mental and physical health of couples, as well as the impact on maladaptive child outcomes. Several studies have examined the problems that couples experience in the United States, while only one study has in Taiwan. However, there is no cross-cultural research on marital problems between the West and the East to examine how cultures influence couples' perceived marital problems. This cross-cultural study of marital problems is important because couples in Taiwan and other collectivistic societies might have marital priorities that are unique to their cultural characteristics. Thus, the common marital problems in Western culture might not apply to Eastern culture. In this study, perceptions of marital problems by 213 married couples living in urban Taiwan and 715 couples in the United States were examined. Results indicated the US couples reported significantly more marital problems than did the Taiwan couples in five out of six areas: communication, intimacy/sexual relations, financial matters, division of labor, and power. On the other hand, rearing children was the biggest problem among Taiwan couples, while it was the least commonly reported problem among the US sample. Background: Language and culture relate in complex ways. Addressing this complexity in the context of language translation is a challenge when caring for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP).Objective: To examine processes of care related to language, culture and translation in an LEP population is the objective of this study.Design: We used community based participatory research to examine the experiences of Russian-speaking cancer patients in San Francisco, California. A Russian Cancer Information Taskforce (RCIT), including community-based organizations, local government, and clinics, participated in all phases of the study.Participants: A purposeful sample of 74 individuals were the participants of the study.Approach: The RCIT shaped research themes and facilitated access to participants. Methods were focus groups, individual interviews, and participant observation. RCIT reviewed data and provided guidance in interpreting results.Results: Four themes emerged. (1) Local Russian-language resources were seen as inadequate and relatively unavailable compared to other non-English languages; (2) a taboo about the word "cancer" led to language "games" surrounding disclosure; (3) this taboo, and other dynamics of care, reflected expectations that Russian speakers derived from experiences in their countries of origin; (4) using interpreters as cultural brokers or establishing support groups for Russian speakers could help address barriers.Conclusions: The language barriers experienced by this LEP population reflect cultural and linguistic issues. Ethnographic materials, including depth interviews and a video, are analyzed to better understand how expatriate retirees living in the Lake Chapala Riviera region of Jalisco, Mexico manage personal identities in retirement. Using concepts from narrative gerontology, this study demonstrates how expatriates' stories and descriptions of Mexicans and Mexican ways of life reflexively construct storytellers' identities and provide a logic for intercultural relationships. While the host population is characterized as happy, friendly, helpful, enterprising and polite, concurrent stories by the same narrators portray them also as untrustworthy, inaccessible, lazy and incompetent. A discourse analysis that extends Cavarero's narrative identity theory argues that these contrasting conceptions of the host culture and population are deployed so as to reflexively position expatriate retirees as interpersonally attractive, culturally tolerant and pragmatically adaptable.
