Fachleute aus den Bereichen der Germanistik und Komparatistik verfolgen in diesem Sammelband neue Forschungsansätze zu Hermann Bahr. Sie untersuchen Diskurse über Kaiserreich und Königtum, Krise und Kritik, Kairos und Katastrophe, Krieg und Kultur in den Essays und Reiseberichten, Zeitungsartikeln und Tagebüchern, aber auch Romanen und anderen Schriften eines Hauptvertreters der Wiener Moderne. Es werden kulturtheoretische Fragen nach der Konstitution und Konstruktion von Identität und dem Zulassen von Differenz gestellt – sowie nach den Konversionen der Weltanschauungen, Ideologien und Religionen vom Provinzialismus und Kosmopolitismus über Nationalismus, Militarismus und Imperialismus zu Katholizismus und Antisemitismus, Austroslawismus, Austromarxismus und Austro-Europäertum.

Das Buch befasst sich mit Ulrich Holbeins äußerst facettenreichem Werk, das neben genuin literarischen Texten auch Essays, zahlreiche Feuilletonbeiträge und Hörspiele beinhaltet. Kennzeichnend für das Œuvre ist die Anwendung avantgardistischer Verfahren bei gleichzeitiger kontinuierlicher Auseinandersetzung mit der literarischen und philosophischen Tradition. Der Band schließt an die allmählich einsetzende wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk des Autors an. Dieser Band versammelt die Beiträge der Fachtagung Sprachen im Rahmen der 18. Hochschultage Berufliche Bildung im März 2015 an der TU Dresden. This volume of papers from the 13th International Conference on Methods in Dialectology, held at the University of Leeds in 2008, collects together current research and recent methodological developments in the study of dialects by new and established scholars. It is organised into themed sections reporting on historical dialectology, dialect literature, the production of dialect maps and atlases, and the collection and organisation of material for dialect dictionaries and corpora. Perceptual dialectology and dialect intelligibility are also featured, and there are linguistic analyses of dialectal data from many language varieties.

Over the last two decades scholars and citizens in Central and Eastern Europe had more than enough opportunity to realise that neither democracy nor the rule of law can be taken for granted. Such a realisation also means that if they want to think and speak clearly about or take a stand for their political and legal ideals, they need to reflect on them constantly, and conceptualise them in novel ways, by questioning entrenched lines of argument and problematising established patterns of thought. The contributors of this volume discuss a wide range of subjects from jurisprudential methodology and legal reasoning through democracy and constitutional courts to rights and criminal justice, raising questions and suggesting new ideas on «The Rule of Law and the Challenges to Jurisprudence» in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond.

The Philosophical Transactions and the letters preserved in the Royal Society's archives provide precious insights into the making of science and the workings of the Republic of Letters in the early and late modern periods. This book investigates the Royal Society's relations with Italy through a socio-historical and critical linguistic analysis of the papers concerning Italian research published in the Transactions and of the epistolary exchanges between the Society's Fellows and Italian scholars. The aim, from the linguistic perspective, is to describe the features and development of papers based on Italian research published in the journal, as well as the discursive aspects that characterise the exchanges between the two countries. Ultimately, from the historical and cultural point of view, the study will provide a picture of the development of Anglo-Italian relations in scientific context from the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth century.

The volume consists of fifteen papers discussing a vast array of issues and aspects relating to the concept of cultural memory. Taking as a standpoint the Halbwachs/Assman critical tradition, the individual contributions trace the relevance of the concept in the context of a wide range of areas, from medieval studies, through Victorian culture, up to multifold examples from the contemporary literary scene, especially speculative fiction. The collection of papers is designed as an informative and exhaustive overview tracing the relevance of the notion of cultural memory as a reference point in the discussion of cultural continuity and transformations in the diachronic context of the evolution of European culture.

In today's increasingly digitalized world, digital transformation dramatically changes the way of doing business and reshapes business functions such as controlling, logistics, HR, marketing etc. For companies that do not know how to implement digital transformation, it will be difficult to survive. Therefore, digital transformation is one of the most debated issues in today's business world. Being aware of this issue, Turkish-German University (TGU) hosted a conference on „Digital Transformation in Business'in cooperation with Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in Istanbul. As digital humanities in recent years have been taking roots in major international research centers, this edited volume consisting of ten papers including the introduction seeks to examine the current state of the digital/data-driven research in history and neighboring disciplines dealing with Southeast Europe as well as with the Ottoman Empire and to give an interdisciplinary impetus by bringing together international scholars working with various digital approaches. The included papers give a broad introduction into the field and follow various methods of digital analysis and visualization incorporating approaches like corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis,GIS (Geographic Information Systems), agent-based modelling, computationalstatistics etc.

The volume consists of thirteen papers devoted to various problems of the philosophy of logic and mathematics. They can be divided into two groups. The first group contains papers devoted to some general problems of the philosophy of mathematics whereas the second group – papers devoted to the history of logic in Poland and to the work of Polish logicians and math-ematicians in the philosophy of mathematics and logic. Among considered problems are: meaning of reverse mathematics, proof in mathematics, the status of Church's Thesis, phenomenology in the philosophy of mathematics, mathematics vs. theology, the problem of truth, philosophy of logic and mathematics in the interwar Poland.

The effects of language are numerous. Some are known and have been described, other effects are intuitive and are still waiting to be understood, explained and predicted, while – possibly – there might be more effects that we are still unaware of. The book brings together 16 contributions organized into two main sections: The first one relates to the issue of the effects of language in the FL classroom. The second one can, broadly speaking, be subsumed under the heading of sociolinguistics, given that it brings together a number of papers exploring the effects of language on society and/or on the individual. The answers to the questions have been provided by linguists – theoreticians and practitioners - from multiple perspectives. Thus, the conclusions and invitations for further research put forth in the papers collected in this book, should be of use to anyone with an interest in the effects of language, from cognitive scientists to FL teachers.

This volume comprises 17 papers that are dealing with European pluricentric languages where there are some issues of contact and conflict. An overview about all European languages and of those that are pluricentric is also provided. Central topics are human rights for non-dominant varieties, and conflicts in pluricentric languages on the Iberian peninsula and on the British Isles. Several papers also deal with languages from a different point of view, with languages where the status of pluricentricity is disputed (Albanian, Post-Yougoslav-languages). For the first time the pluricentricity of Finno-Ugric languages is dealt with alongside papers about the pluricentricity of Russian. This is the seventh volume that is published by the'International Working Group on non-dominant varieties of pluricentric languages'.

This Festschrift for Wolfgang Mieder, preeminent paremiologist and folklorist, combines personal tributes and scholarly papers by colleagues, friends, and former students – presented in three categories that address his roles as a mentor, scholar, and world citizen over many decades. This volume is a collection of papers read at the International Medieval Congress at Leeds in 2017, in two sessions organized by the Institute of English Studies at the University of London and four sessions organized by the Society of Historical English Language and Linguistics. Contributions consist of poetry, prose, interlinear glosses, syntax, semantics, lexicology, and medievalism. The contributors employ a wealth of different approaches. The general theme of the IMC 2017 was ‘otherness', and some papers fit this theme very well. Even when two researchers deal with a similar topic and arrive at different conclusions, the editors do not try to harmonize them but present them as they are for further discussion.

This volume contains a collection of papers that deal with Romance linguistics from two broad perspectives: multilingualism and language acquisition. Some of the contributions investigate these phenomena in the light of language contact, language attitudes and code switching in multilingual societies or multilingual families. This book offers a selection of sixteen papers presented at the 29th international annual conference of the Croatian Applied Linguistics Society held in 2015. This volume contains the papers of the colloquium Protohistory of the Text, which took place on 28 and 29 November 2013 at the Universitat de Barcelona. Each paper is devoted to the transmission of a major classical Latin text. The contributors are distinguished scholars from around the world such as Paolo Fedeli, Peter Kruschwitz, Marc Mayer, Stephen Oakley, Oronzo Pecere, Antonio Ramírez de Verger and Richard Tarrant. They discuss texts ranging from the comedies of Plautus and Terence through the writings of Cicero, Livy and Virgil to the Historia Augusta. Their papers review existing scholarship and offer new insights into the transmission of these texts and especially into their protohistory, the phase of their history that precedes the earliest surviving manuscripts.

This volume grew out of the 36th International LAUD Symposium, which was held in March 2014 at the University of Koblenz-Landau in Landau, Germany. There is general consensus among language experts that slightly more than half of today's 7,000 languages are under severe threat of extinction even within fifty to one hundred years. The 13 papers contained in this volume explore the dramatic loss of linguistic diversity, why this matters, and what can be done and achieved to document and support endangered languages especially in the context of an ever increasing globalized world. The issue of vanishing languages is discussed from a variety of methodologies and perspectives: sociolinguistics, language ecology, language contact, language policy/planning, attitudes and linguistic inequalities.

During the Cold War, Estonia lay behind the Iron Curtain. Even in the grip of Soviet rule, the country underwent many important developments. This volume brings together fourteen papers on the political, economic, and cultural history of Estonia during the Cold War. Their topics range from international relations and the border regime to tourism and the media. The papers are based on extensive archival research and make use of many previously unexamined documents. The resulting book offers new insights into the history of Estonia and of the Cold War on a local level.

This volume presents a selection of papers from the «3rd International Conference on Non-Dominant Varieties of Pluricentric Languages» that was held in 2014 at the University of Surrey, Guildford (UK). The papers in section one deal with the theoretical aspects of pluricentricity and methods of description of the variations in pluricentric languages. Section two contains a number of papers about «new» pluricentric languages and «new» non-dominant varieties that have not been described before. Section three showcases pluricentric languages that are used alongside indigenous languages and section four deals with the pluricentricity of special languages.

The present volume assembles six studies on the marking of evidential functions in Serbian (J. Čudomirović, Lj. Popović), Slovak (M. Ivanová) and Polish (A. Socka, P. Yildiz, B. Wiemer); four of them (plus an Introduction) are written in English, with a further article in Russian and German, respectively. The focus for the West Slavic languages is on sentential adverbs and so-called function words (particles, complementizers, etc.; M. Ivanová, A. Socka, P. Yildiz, B. Wiemer), as well as on the roots of evidential marking appearing in clause-combining with perception or seem-verbs in Polish (P. Yildiz) or Serbian (J. Čudomirović), for which different degrees of conventionalization are discussed. One article, however, additionally targets evidential extensions of past tense paradigms in Serbian (Lj. Popović), for which an analysis of a questionnaire survey is presented. All articles, with one exception, take a synchronic view of the aforementioned contemporary languages, mostly on the basis of corpus data. One study deals with early,'pre-evidential'stages in the development of the Polish comparison marker jakoby'as if'(B. Wiemer). The interaction with, and relation to, epistemic meanings is accounted for in all the studies, but it is specifically focused on in two papers on Polish (P. Yildiz, B. Wiemer). A third paper on Polish (A. Socka) arrives at new conclusions concerning'distance'from a discourse perspective, partially conventionalized in the lexical meaning of reportive sentence adverbs (or particles).

This collection of papers focuses on cognitive metaphor research (CMR) from the perspective of the current debate on linguistic data and evidence. The peculiarity of the book is that it reveals the causes that trigger the methodological problems of data handling in CMR. These problems include the identifiability of metaphors in discourse and the reliability of the methods of gathering metaphors such as linguistic intuition, discourse analysis, corpus analysis, and psycholinguistic experiments. In order to overcome their weaknesses and to enhance their reliance, the papers argue, on the one hand, for the combination of different methods of gathering and evaluating data in CMR. On the other hand, the papers also point out that converging evidence cannot be obtained without constraining the combinability of data stemming from different sources.

This volume presents selected contributions to an annual symposium on metaphor and metonymy held at the English Department of Heidelberg University. It brings together papers by lecturers, PhD students and graduates from three universities – Heidelberg University, Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, and the University of East Anglia in Norwich. The contributions illustrate the plurality of perspectives and methods in current cognitive-linguistic research on metaphor and metonymy and exemplify some of the ways in which they can be combined. The papers also attest to the wide range of domains and topics to which metaphor- and metonymy-based research can be applied, including emotion terms, political and scientific discourse, morphology, cross-cultural variation and internet communication.

The fifth volume in the series Language Competence and Language Awareness in Europe unites a collection of peer-reviewed papers delivered at the Third Conference on Language Contact in Times of Globalization (LCTG3) at the University of Greifswald in 2011. The papers are arranged in five thematic sections: Part I studies lexical and grammatical borrowing and pseudo-loans. Part II looks at code-switching and language intertwining in different contexts, while Part III is concerned with the power, political backup and use of different languages in multilingual settings. This is followed by Part IV which comprises three articles on the Linguistic Landscapes of different urban areas. Finally, Part V focuses on language choices in literature and institutional settings.

This collection of papers is a gift for all the members of the Japan Society for Medieval English Studies, who worked abroad under the direction of British, European and American medievalists or greatly influenced by those scholars as guests of the Society. Six papers in this book tell parts of their special fields of study: Aldred the Northumbrian scribe, Old English glosses, the Exeter Book, source studies of Old English homilies, Old English Boethius and Judgement Day II. As one of their students and a former president of the Society, the editor adds the last paper on Old English syntax.

This volume contains papers which reflect current discussions in the study of speech actions. The collection was inspired by the papers presented at Meaning, Context and Cognition, the first international conference integrating cognitive linguistics and pragmatics initiated by the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics of the University of Lódz (Poland) in 2011 and held annually. The necessarily heterogeneous field of research into speech actions is approached by the contributors from various perspectives and with focus on different types of data. The authors apply recent formal models in linguistics to issues concerning the lexicon, morphology, syntax, semantics, information structure, and phonology in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Polish, Russian, and Slovenian. Topics of the papers include aspect and tense, axial expressions, case, control, copula, ditransitives, focus particles, indefiniteness, infinitives, nominal phrases, numerals, temporal adverbials, trochaic lengthening, and verb stems. The papers aim at proposing both descriptively accurate and explanatorily adequate analyses, considering all linguistic levels and interfaces. This book is a collection of articles covering the theme of interaction. Interaction combines two crucial elements: the intrapersonal and the interpersonal. Accordingly, the authors approach this issue from two complementary perspectives: from the internal and external or cognitive and social perspective. The papers that take the former perspective focus on cognitive bases of interaction, on the representation of motion, on metaphor and metonymy, or gestures, perception and cognition. The topic that dominates the papers that take the social stance towards the topic of interaction is identity. By applying a variety of new analytical tools and concepts, the authors show how we build images of ourselves through language, how society and institutions mould us into different categories, and how we negotiate our membership of these categories.

The volume contains 15 papers by linguists from seven different European countries. The papers offer insights into the research results of a number of recent studies conducted in the field of applied linguistics covering topics such as specialized communication, foreign language teaching, terminology problems and the like. The papers in this collection contribute to our understanding of several aspects of lifelong learning. Two papers highlight the characteristics of reflection among teachers including self-evaluation and blogging. Two other papers study cooperation in lifelong learning – one, the impact of communities on professional learning among university lecturers, and the other, teacher-principal-parent partnerships in early childhood education. Universities offer a variety of courses and one paper analyses the impact on students of a course in educational psychology. The nineteen essays are a selection from the papers given at the Seventh International Conference of the North East Asia Council of Studies in History of Christianity (NEACSHC), held in Wuhan (China) in 2009. The volume has four parts: General, China, Japan, and Korea. The first part deals with the impact of Western interdenominationalism on the East and the future development of Christianity in China. The five papers on China cope with 19th and 20th century topics such as distribution of Christian literature, nationalism, modernization, Christian socialism, and Sino-theology. Comparisons with the situation in the other East-Asian countries are also made in the three papers on Japan, focusing on the beginning of Protestant mission work and Christian education. The final part, regarding Korea and consisting of four contributions, pays attention to recent developments in Bible translation, church planting, holiness mission, Korean diaspora Christianity, and the Korean War.

The special volume in the series Glaube und Denken contains papers presented by 26 theologians from 12 different countries. The authors convened at the university of Regensburg for a week-long International Summer School. They pondered how mission and peaceful co-existence can be achieved under newly emerging conditions. They observed a rise of nationalistic and fundamentalist currents in many Asian countries in which Christians are often a minority. Furthermore, developments in Germany, such as secularization and the increasing number of believers of other religions through the influx of immigrants, show the urgency to reflect on this new situation. The collected papers touch topics such as education, ecumenism, and history. Most of the participants are students of the Regensburg systematic theologian Hans Schwarz whose special fields of interest are mirrored in these topics.
