Objective Physical therapy is placing new emphasis on how the profession might contribute to improving population health. However, little is known about the nature of population-based practice (PBP) of physical therapists. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a view of PBP from the perspective of physical therapists engaged in it. Methods Twenty-one physical therapists participating in PBP were interviewed. Qualitative descriptive analysis was used to summarize results. Results Most of the reported PBP was at the community and individual level, and the most common types of PBP were health teaching and coaching, collaboration and consultation, and screening and outreach. Three topic areas were identified (with respective themes): characteristics of PBP (meeting group or community needs, promotion and prevention, access, and movement), preparation for PBP (core vs elective, experiential learning, social determinants of health, and health behavior change), and rewards and challenges of PBP (intrinsic rewards, funding and resources, professional recognition, and complexity of behavior change). Conclusion PBP in physical therapy presents practitioners with rewards and challenges as they work to improve the health of populations. Impact Physical therapists who are currently engaged in PBP are, in effect, defining the role of the profession in improving health at a population level. The information in this paper will help the profession move from a theoretical view of the role of physical therapists in improving population health to understanding what this role looks like in practice. This paper explores the well-being ['well-being' and 'wellbeing' are used interchangeably in the literature. Well-being is used in this paper (except in the reference list where exact wording is maintained)] benefits of participation in a workplace choir for health service staff. A mixed method study, this project combines quantitative measures of work engagement, perceived stress, resilience levels and work absences with qualitative interviews with choir participants. It is the first study of workplace choirs in Ireland and one of very few studies internationally that research health service staff choirs. There is some preliminary evidence of benefits that choir attendance may increase positive perception of workers' mental health as well as effect depression rates. However, evidence is limited quantitatively and difficulties in measuring the health benefits of arts interventions are noted. Qualitative data, however, confirms previous study findings, namely that a workplace choir can promote social connectedness, enjoyment at work and staff engagement. Work place choir was also noted to appeal mainly to a limited demographic of work place staff and people with relatively positive health and well-being. Efforts must be made to engage staff from lower socio-economic backgrounds, diverse cultural backgrounds and male staff in work place health promotion activities, as these groups were found less likely to join a work place choir. Given the low cost and low risk of this activity, and the qualitative benefits reported, it is recommended to continue to develop and evaluate health service workplace choirs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Frailty is an important marker of adverse outcomes for older people accessing the Emergency Department (ED). Older patients with frailty have a higher attendance rate to the ED, spend longer in the ED and have a higher rate of admission (HSE, 2017). Frailty Intervention Therapy Teams (FITT) are designed to screen and assess this population in the ED setting, with the aim of early assessment to help decrease length of stay or avoid admission. Two different FIT Teams have recently been formed within the Cork-Kerry region. The aim of this study was to evaluate staff's experience of these teams. Methods This was a mixed methods study. Structured surveys were developed to collect qualitative and quantitative data. The surveys were constructed using themes listed by Proctor et al. (2011) around implementation and service outcomes. Ward and ED staff were provided with paper surveys within the hospital setting and community staff were surveyed via post. Quantitative survey data was analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data was analysed with thematic content analysis. Results Data from 117 surveys was included for analysis (response rate 49%). Results showed that the majority of staff (89%) reported ED was a suitable setting for the FITT, with 85% reporting the information collected by the FITT impacted their involvement. Other themes emerging from staff's experience included timeliness, safety and comprehensive assessment. Conclusion Overall, staff reported the FITT provided a timely service that assisted with decision making and planning. This involved earlier comprehensive assessment, prompt identification of issues which lead to decreased workload for ward staff. It also created an increased volume of referrals to community and ward staff received in a timelier manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose. Results of the 2013 ASHP national survey on informatics are presented. Methods. Pharmacy directors from all types and sizes of U.S. hospitals were included in the sample of 4893 individuals invited to participate in an online survey. The survey contained over 600 data elements that addressed the adoption and use of a variety of pharmacy informatics and technology. Data were analyzed by hospital type and size, accounting for sampling procedures and differences in response rate. Results. Of the 4893 surveys distributed, 465 usable surveys were returned, yielding a response rate of 9.5%. Nearly 33% of hospitals reported having a complete electronic health record (EHR) (i.e., no paper charts). Adoption rates for computerized prescriber order entry, clinical decision support, electronic prescribing, and barcode- assisted medication administration indicated that these technologies are clear priorities. Overall, automated dispensing cabinets were more common in U.S. hospitals than were carousels and dispensing robots. The adoption of patient portals and personal health records is becoming common. Technologies identified as enablers of the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) were found in at least 25% of hospitals. The average total number of pharmacy information technology full-time equivalents was 3.12. Conclusion. This survey found widespread use of pharmacy informatics and technology across the entire medicationuse process. Clinical and research staff who work around magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners are exposed to the static magnetic stray fields of these scanners. Although the past decade has seen strong developments in the assessment of occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields from MRI scanners, there is insufficient insight into the exposure variability that characterizes routine MRI work practice. However, this is an essential component of risk assessment and epidemiological studies. This paper describes the results of a measurement survey of shift-based personal exposure to static magnetic fields (SMF) (B) and motion-induced time-varying magnetic fields (dB/dt) among workers at 15 MRI facilities in the Netherlands. With the use of portable magnetic field dosimeters, >400 full-shift and partial shift exposure measurements were collected among various jobs involved in clinical and research MRI. Various full-shift exposure metrics for B and motion-induced dB/dt exposure were calculated from the measurements, including instantaneous peak exposure and time-weighted average (TWA) exposures. We found strong correlations between levels of static (B) and time-varying (dB/dt) exposure (r = 0.88–0.92) and between different metrics (i.e. peak exposure, TWA exposure) to express full-shift exposure (r = 0.69–0.78). On average, participants were exposed to MRI-related SMFs during only 3.7% of their work shift. Average and peak B and dB/dt exposure levels during the work inside the MRI scanner room were highest among technical staff, research staff, and radiographers. Average and peak B exposure levels were lowest among cleaners, while dB/dt levels were lowest among anaesthesiology staff. Although modest exposure variability between workplaces and occupations was observed, variation between individuals of the same occupation was substantial, especially among research staff. This relatively large variability between workers with the same job suggests that exposure classification based solely on job title may not be an optimal grouping strategy for epidemiological purposes.
