The authors present a case study of the investigation of a transient signal that appeared in the testing of a radar receiver. The characteristics of the test conditions and data are first discussed. The authors then proceed to outline the methods for detecting and analyzing transients in the data. For this, they consider several methods based on modern signal processing and evaluate their utility. The initial method used for identifying transients is based on computer vision techniques, specifically, thresholding spectrograms into binary images, morphological processing, and object boundary extraction. The authors also consider deep learning methods and methods related to optimal statistical detection. For the latter approach, since the transient in this case was chirp-like, the method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate its parameters. Each approach is evaluated, followed by a discussion of how the results could be extended to analysis and detection of other types of transient radio-frequency interference (RFI). The authors find that computer vision, deep learning, and statistical detection methods are all useful. However, each is best used at different stages of the investigation when a transient appears in data. Computer vision is particularly useful when little is known about the transient, while traditional statistically optimal detection can be quite accurate once the structure of the transient is known and its parameters estimated.

Short sprints are predominantly assessed using timing gates and analyzed through parameters of the mono-exponential equation, including estimated maximal sprinting speed (MSS) and relative acceleration (TAU), derived maximum acceleration (MAC), and relative propulsive maximal power (PMAX), further referred to as the No Correction model. However, the frequently recommended flying start technique introduces a bias during parameter estimation. To correct this, two additional models (Estimated TC and Estimated FD) were proposed. To estimate model precision and sensitivity to detect the change, 31 basketball players executed multiple 30 m sprints. Athlete performance was simultaneously measured by a laser gun and timing gates positioned at 5, 10, 20, and 30 m. Short sprint parameters were estimated using a laser gun, representing the criterion measure, and five different timing gate models, representing the practical measures. Only the MSS parameter demonstrated a high agreement between the laser gun and timing gate models, using the percent mean absolute difference (%MAD) estimator (%MAD < 10%). The MSS parameter also showed the highest sensitivity, using the minimum detectable change estimator (%MDC95), with an estimated %MDC95 < 17%. Interestingly, sensitivity was the highest for the No Correction model (%MDC95 < 7%). All other parameters and models demonstrated an unsatisfying level of sensitivity. Thus, sports practitioners should be cautious when using timing gates to estimate maximum acceleration indices and changes in their respective levels.

This paper summarizes over 60 years of radar system development at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, from early research on satellite tracking and planetary radar to the present ability to perform the centimeter-resolution imaging of resident space objects and future plans to extend this capability to geosynchronous range.

This contribution focuses on the detection of tracer particles within non-homogeneous bulk media, aiming to enhance insights into particulate systems. Polarimetric radar measurements are employed, utilizing cross-polarizing channels in order to mitigate interference from bulk media reflections. To distinguish the tracer particle in the measurements, a resonant cross-polarizing structure is constructed, facilitating the isolation of frequency signatures from the surrounding bulk clutter. In addition to characterizing the bulk and tracer components, this study provides a detailed presentation and discussion of the measurement setup, along with the employed signal processing methods. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated through comprehensive measurements, where a tracer particle is systematically positioned at various locations. The results affirm the feasibility and efficacy of the approach, highlighting its applicability for enhanced dynamic monitoring in particulate systems within industrial processes.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-invasive technology that uses electromagnetic pulses for subsurface exploration. In the railroad sector, it is crucial to assessing soil layers and infrastructure, offering insights into soil stratification and geological features and aiding in identifying subsurface hazards. However, the automation of radargram analysis is impeded by the lack of ground truth—accurate real-world data used to validate machine learning models—thus affecting the deployment of advanced algorithms. This study focuses on generating high-quality simulated data to address the shortage of real-world data in the context of object detection along railroad tracks and presents a fully automated pipeline that includes data generation, algorithm training, and validation using real-world data. By doing so, it paves the way for significantly easing the future task of object detection algorithms in the railway sector. A simulation environment, including the digital twin of a GPR antenna, was developed for artificial data generation. The process involves pre- and post-processing techniques to transform the three-dimensional data from the multichannel GPR system into two-dimensional datasets. This ensures minimal information loss and suitability for established two-dimensional object detection algorithms like the well-known YOLO (You Only Look Once) framework. Validation involved real-world measurements on a track with predefined buried objects. The entire pipeline, encompassing data generation, processing, training, and application, was automated for efficient algorithm testing and implementation. Artificial data show promise for better performance with increased training. Future AI and sensor advancements will enhance subsurface exploration, contributing to safer and more reliable railroad operations.

In this paper, we dive into the exciting world of wireless communication, focusing on how millimeter-wave technology and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output phased array antennas are shaping the future of 5G and the upcoming 6G technologies. We cover the latest advancements in millimeter-wave and beamforming technologies, emphasizing their role in enhancing network security and efficiency in automotive vehicles through dual radar communication. Our discussion spans the benefits, applications, challenges, and solutions of these technologies individually from millimeter-wave to beamforming technologies and joint radar communications, alongside a look at their theoretical and practical implementations. We emphasize the integration of beamforming technology in joint radar communications for future automotive vehicles and its impact on automotive systems, smart cities, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Looking ahead, we discuss the potential of these technologies to transform future technology landscapes while also addressing the security implications of merging communication and radar capabilities. This paper aims to provide a clear view of the advancements and prospects of millimeter-wave, beamforming, and dual radar communication technologies.

The Yulong porphyry copper belt in eastern Tibet is located in the middle of Tethys–Himalayan metallogenic mega-province, which is one of the three major porphyry copper metallogenic mega-provinces. The Yulong copper belt belongs to the super porphyry copper belt and represents one of the most important copper mineralization prospecting areas in China. A significant quantity of research data shows that this study area belongs to the environment of intracontinental collision and compression, with a complex geological structure, magmatic rock development and excellent metallogenic geological background. However, because this area is located in an alpine and high-altitude area, it is difficult to carry out any traditional field geological surveys, and the existing studies of both prospecting and prediction are relatively weak. This study focused on information extraction for alteration minerals in the Yulong metallogenic belt and its surroundings based on multispectral data and hyperspectral data, establishing a spectral library of alteration minerals in this area. Based on Sentinel-1A radar data and Landsat-8 OLI color synthesis data, the linear structure of the study area was interpreted. On this basis, the information extraction results relating to alteration minerals obtained from multi-source remote sensing data, linear structure interpretation results and the geochemical exploration data of the study area were superimposed to comprehensively analyze the metallogenic geological conditions and mineralization characteristics in the area, establish remote sensing prospecting indicators there and optimize the potential areas for prospecting, providing technical support for the next step of prospecting and exploration in the area.

There is increasing interest in space domain awareness worldwide, motivating investigation of the use of non-traditional sensors for space surveillance. One such class of sensor is VHF wind profiling radars, which have a low cost relative to other radars typically applied to this task. These radars are ubiquitous throughout the world and may potentially offer complementary space surveillance capabilities to the Space Surveillance Network. This paper updates an initial investigation on the use of Buckland Park VHF wind profiling radars for observing resident space objects in low Earth orbit to further investigate the space surveillance capabilities of the sensor class. The radar was operated during the Australian Defence “SpaceFest” 2019 activity, incorporating new beam scheduling and signal processing functionality that extend upon the capabilities described in the initial investigation. The beam scheduling capability used two-line element propagations to determine the appropriate beam direction to use to observe transiting satellites. The signal processing capabilities used a technique based on the Keystone transform to correct for range migration, allowing the development of new signal processing modes that allow the coherent integration time to be increased to improve the SNR of the observed targets, thereby increasing the detection rate. The results reveal that 5874 objects were detected over 10 days, with 2202 unique objects detected, representing a three-fold increase in detection rate over previous single-beam direction observations. The maximum detection height was 2975.4 km, indicating a capability to detect objects in medium Earth orbit. A minimum detectable RCS at 1000 km of −10.97 dBm2 (0.09 m2) was observed. The effects of Faraday rotation resulting from the use of linearly polarised antennae are demonstrated. The radar’s utility for providing total electron content (TEC) measurements is investigated using a high-range resolution mode and high-precision ephemeris data. The short-term Fourier transform is applied to demonstrate the radar’s ability to investigate satellite rotation characteristics and monitor ionospheric plasma waves and instabilities.

The potential of microwave Doppler radar in non-contact vital sign detection is significant; however, prevailing radar-based heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring technologies often necessitate data lengths surpassing 10 s, leading to increased detection latency and inaccurate HRV estimates. To address this problem, this paper introduces a novel network integrating a frequency representation module and a residual in residual module for the precise estimation and tracking of HR from concise time series, followed by HRV monitoring. The network adeptly transforms radar signals from the time domain to the frequency domain, yielding high-resolution spectrum representation within specified frequency intervals. This significantly reduces latency and improves HRV estimation accuracy by using data that are only 4 s in length. This study uses simulation data, Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave radar-measured data, and Continuous-Wave radar data to validate the model. Experimental results show that despite the shortened data length, the average heart rate measurement accuracy of the algorithm remains above 95% with no loss of estimation accuracy. This study contributes an efficient heart rate variability estimation algorithm to the domain of non-contact vital sign detection, offering significant practical application value.

This paper provides an in-depth review of deep learning techniques to address the challenges of odometry and global ego-localization using frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensors. In particular, we focus on the prediction of odometry, which involves the determination of the ego-motion of a system by external sensors, and loop closure detection, which concentrates on the determination of the ego-position typically on an existing map. We initially emphasize the significance of these tasks in the context of radar sensors and underscore the motivations behind them. The subsequent sections delve into the practical implementation of deep learning approaches, strategically designed to effectively address the aforementioned challenges. We primarily focus on spinning and automotive radar configurations within the domain of autonomous driving. Additionally, we introduce publicly available datasets that have been instrumental in addressing these challenges and analyze the importance and struggles of current methods used for radar based odometry and localization. In conclusion, this paper highlights the distinctions between the addressed tasks and other radar perception applications, while also discussing their differences from challenges posed by alternative sensor modalities. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on advancing radar sensor capabilities through the application of deep learning methodologies, particularly in the context of enhancing odometry and ego-localization for autonomous driving applications.

Precise altitude data are indispensable for flight navigation, particularly during the autonomous landing of unmanned aerial systems (UASs). Conventional light and barometric sensors employed for altitude estimation are limited by poor visibility and temperature conditions, respectively, whilst global positioning system (GPS) receivers provide the altitude from the mean sea level (MSL) marred with a slow update rate. To cater to the landing safety requirements, UASs necessitate precise altitude information above ground level (AGL) impervious to environmental conditions. Radar altimeters, a mainstay in commercial aviation for at least half a century, realize these requirements through minimum operational performance standards (MOPSs). More recently, the proliferation of 5G technology and interference with the universally allocated band for radar altimeters from 4.2 to 4.4 GHz underscores the necessity to explore novel avenues. Notably, there is no dedicated MOPS tailored for radar altimeters of UASs. To gauge the performance of a radar altimeter offering for UASs, existing MOPSs are the de facto choice. Historically, frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radars have been extensively used in a broad spectrum of ranging applications including radar altimeters. Modern monolithic millimeter wave (mmWave) automotive radars, albeit designed for automotive applications, also employ FMCW for precise ranging with a cost-effective and compact footprint. Given the technology maturation with excellent size, weight, and power (SWaP) metrics, there is a growing trend in industry and academia to explore their efficacy beyond the realm of the automotive industry. To this end, their feasibility for UAS altimetry remains largely untapped. While the literature on theoretical discourse is prevalent, a specific focus on mmWave radar altimetry is lacking. Moreover, clutter estimation with hardware specifications of a pure look-down mmWave radar is unreported. This article argues the applicability of MOPSs for commercial aviation for adaptation to a UAS use case. The theme of the work is a tutorial based on a simplified mathematical and theoretical discussion on the understanding of performance metrics and inherent intricacies. A systems engineering approach for deriving waveform specifications from operational requirements of a UAS is offered. Lastly, proposed future research directions and insights are included.

Radar data can provide additional depth information for monocular depth estimation. It provides a cost-effective solution and is robust in various weather conditions, particularly when compared with lidar. Given the sparse and limited vertical field of view of radar signals, existing methods employ either a vertical extension of radar points or the training of a preprocessing neural network to extend sparse radar points under lidar supervision. In this work, we present a novel radar expansion technique inspired by the joint bilateral filter, tailored for radar-guided monocular depth estimation. Our approach is motivated by the synergy of spatial and range kernels within the joint bilateral filter. Unlike traditional methods that assign a weighted average of nearby pixels to the current pixel, we expand sparse radar points by calculating a confidence score based on the values of spatial and range kernels. Additionally, we propose the use of a range-aware window size for radar expansion instead of a fixed window size in the image plane. Our proposed method effectively increases the number of radar points from an average of 39 points in a raw radar frame to an average of 100 K points. Notably, the expanded radar exhibits fewer intrinsic errors when compared with raw radar and previous methodologies. To validate our approach, we assess our proposed depth estimation model on the nuScenes dataset. Comparative evaluations with existing radar-guided depth estimation models demonstrate its state-of-the-art performance.

Numerous analytical radar-scattering laws have been published through the past decades to interpret planetary radar observations, such as Hagfors’ law, which has been commonly used for the Moon, and the cosine law, which is commonly used in the shape modeling of asteroids. Many of the laws have not been numerically validated in terms of their interpretation and limitations. This paper evaluates radar-scattering laws for self-affine fractal surfaces using a numerical approach. Traditionally, the autocorrelation function and, more recently, the Hurst exponent, which describes the self-affinity, have been used to quantify the height correlation. Here, hundreds of three-dimensional synthetic surfaces parameterized using a root-mean-square (rms) height and a Hurst exponent were generated, and their backscattering coefficient functions were computed to evaluate their consistency with selected analytical models. The numerical results were also compared to empirical models for roughness and radar-scattering measurements of Hawaii lava flows and found consistent. The Gaussian law performed best at predicting the rms slope regardless of the Hurst exponent. Consistent with the literature, it was found to be the most reliable radar-scattering law for the inverse modeling of the rms slopes and the Fresnel reflection coefficient from the quasi-specular backscattering peak, when homogeneous statistical properties and a ray-optics approach can be assumed. The contribution of multiple scattering in the backscattered power increases as a function of rms slope up to about 20% of the backscattered power at normal incidence when the rms slope angle is 46°.

The Biomass Proxy is a new cloud-free vegetation monitoring product that offers timely and analysis-ready data indicative of above-ground crop biomass dynamics at 10m spatial resolution. The Biomass Proxy links the consistent and continuous temporal signal of the Sentinel-1 Cross Ratio (CR), a vegetation index derived from Synthetic Aperture Radar backscatter, with the spatial information of the Sentinel-2 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a vegetation index derived from optical observations. A global scaling relationship between CR and NDVI forms the basis of a novel fusion methodology based on static and dynamic combinations of temporal and spatial responses of CR and NDVI at field level. The fusion process is used to mitigate the impact on product quality of low satellite revisit periods due to acquisition design or persistent cloud coverage, and to respond to rapid changes in a timely manner to detect environmental and management events. The resulting Biomass Proxy provides time series that are continuous, unhindered by clouds, and produced uniformly across all geographical regions and crops. The Biomass Proxy offers opportunities including improved crop growth monitoring, event detection, and phenology stage detection.

This paper presents a method for predicting atmospheric duct conditions from a clutter power spectrum using deep learning. To accurately predict the duct conditions, deep learning with a binary classification is applied to the proposed refractivity from the clutter (RFC) method. The input data set is the artificial clutter data that are generated via the Advanced Refractive Prediction System (AREPS) simulation software Ver. 3.6 in conjunction with random atmospheric refractive indices. The output of the RFC method is then predicted via binary classification, indicating whether the atmospheric conditions are duct or non-duct. For the cross-validation, the clutter power spectrum data are generated based on real atmospheric refractivity data. The results show that the DNN trained with 5600 pieces of data (validation accuracy of 95.99%) exhibits a binary classification accuracy of 98.36%. The deep neural network (DNN) trained with 28,000 pieces of data (validation accuracy of 98.20%) achieves a binary classification accuracy of 99.06% with an F1-score of 0.9921.

The increasing amount of space debris poses a significant threat to operational satellites and space-based services. This article updates the community on the current status of the development of ATLAS, a tracking radar that is part of the EUSST network and aims to detect space objects in low Earth orbits. This article focuses on the latest activities performed: calibration of the pointing system and initial observations of space objects. The calibration procedure consisted of cross-scanning the Solar disk and yielded great results, obtaining an offset of 5.3° in azimuth and 0.10° in elevation. The first observation campaign resulted in 33 range detections of the International Space Station (ISS) with a probability of false alarm of 10−9. The observations were then used to readjust the radar equation to assess the real-world performance of the system.

RADARs and cameras have been present in automotives since the advent of ADAS, as they possess complementary strengths and weaknesses but have been underlooked in the context of learning-based methods. In this work, we propose a method to perform object detection in autonomous driving based on a geometrical and sequential sensor fusion of 3+1D RADAR and semantics extracted from camera data through point cloud painting from the perspective view. To achieve this objective, we adapt PointPainting from the LiDAR and camera domains to the sensors mentioned above. We first apply YOLOv8-seg to obtain instance segmentation masks and project their results to the point cloud. As a refinement stage, we design a set of heuristic rules to minimize the propagation of errors from the segmentation to the detection stage. Our pipeline concludes by applying PointPillars as an object detection network to the painted RADAR point cloud. We validate our approach in the novel View of Delft dataset, which includes 3+1D RADAR data sequences in urban environments. Experimental results show that this fusion is also suitable for RADAR and cameras as we obtain a significant improvement over the RADAR-only baseline, increasing mAP from 41.18 to 52.67 (+27.9%).

Radar systems are a type of sensor that detects radio signals reflected from objects located a long distance from transmitters. For covering a longer range and a higher resolution in the operation of a radar, a high-frequency band and an array antenna are measures to take. Given a limited size to the antenna aperture in the front end of the radar, the choice of a millimeter-wave band leads to a denser layout for the array antenna and a higher antenna gain. Millimeter-wave signals tend to become attenuated faster by a larger loss of the covering material like the radome, implying this disadvantage offsets the advantage of high antenna directivity, compared to the C-band and X-band ones. As the radome is essential to the radar system to protect the array antenna from rain and dust, a metamaterial surface in the layer is suggested to meet multiple objectives. Firstly, the proposed electromagnetic structure is the protection layer for the source of radiation. Secondly, the metasurface does not disturb the millimeter-wave signal and makes its way through the cover layer to the air. This electromagnetically transparent surface transforms the phase distribution of the incident wave into the equal phase in the transmitted wave, resulting in an increased antenna gain. This is fabricated and assembled with the array antenna held in a 3D-printed jig with harnessing accessories. It is examined in view of S21 as the transfer coefficient between two ports of the VNA, having the antenna alone and with the metasurface. Additionally, the far-field test comes next to check the validity of the suggested structure and design. The bench test shows around a 7 dB increase in the transfer coefficient, and the anechoic chamber field test gives about a 5 dB improvement in antenna gain for a 24-band GHz array antenna.

The municipality of Fusagasugá is located 50 kilometers from the city of Bogotá, Colombia, in the eastern cordillera of the Andes in South America. Due to its geographical location, a mountainous area with heights between 1000 and 2000 meters above sea level and two rainy seasons a year, it is affected by processes of instability and surface deformations. The objective of the present investigation was to identify and quantify the displacement speeds of the zones affected by processes of instability and superficial deformation. In this study, 20 radar satellite images from the Sentinel-1 program were used in the SLC format between 30 January 2020 and 19 April 2022 in descending orbit, applying the Small Base Line (SBAS) technique. On the other hand, 21 SAR images were also used in descending orbit between 6 January 2020 and 14 December 2021, applying the persistent scatterers (PS) technique. With the above information, it was possible to map and update the data of the municipality of Fusagasugá in order to include them in the monitoring processes at the regional level.

The tropical forests in the Amazon store large amounts of carbon and are still considered a carbon sink. There is evidence that deforestation can turn a forest landscape into a carbon source due to land use and forest degradation. Deforestation causes fragmented forest landscapes. It is known from field experiments that forest dynamics at the edge of forest fragments are altered by changes in the microclimate and increased tree mortality (“edge effects”). However, it is unclear how this will affect large fragmented forest landscapes, and thus the entire Amazon region. The aim of this study is to investigate different forest attributes in edge and core forest areas at high resolution, and thus to identify the large-scale impacts of small-scale edge effects. Therefore, a well-established framework combining forest modelling and lidar-generated forest structure information was combined with radar-based forest cover data. Furthermore, forests were also analyzed at the landscape level to investigate changes between highly fragmented and less-fragmented landscapes. This study found that the aboveground biomass in forest edge areas is 27% lower than in forest core areas. In contrast, the net primary productivity is 13% higher in forest edge areas than in forest core areas. In the second step, whole fragmented landscapes were analyzed. Nearly 30% of all forest landscapes are highly fragmented, particularly in the regions of the Arc of Deforestation, on the edge of the Andes and on the Amazon river banks. Less-fragmented landscapes are mainly located in the central Amazon rainforest. The aboveground biomass is 28% lower in highly fragmented forest landscapes than in less-fragmented landscapes. The net primary productivity is 13% higher in highly fragmented forest landscapes than in less-fragmented forest landscapes. In summary, fragmentation of the Amazon rainforest has an impact on forest attributes such as biomass and productivity, with mostly negative effects on forest dynamics. If deforestation continues and the proportion of highly fragmented forest landscapes increase, the effect may be even more intense. By combining lidar, radar and forest modelling, this study shows that it is possible to map forest structure, and thus the degree of forest degradation, over a large area and derive more detailed information about the carbon dynamics of the Amazon region.

A reformed particle swarm optimization (RPSO)-based up-conversion mixer circuit is proposed for radar application in this paper. In practice, a non-optimized up-conversion mixer suffers from high power consumption, poor linearity, and conversion gain. Therefore, the RPSO algorithm is proposed to optimize the up-conversion mixer. The novelty of the proposed RPSO algorithm is it helps to solve the problem of local optima and premature convergence in traditional particle swarm optimization (TPSO). Furthermore, in the RPSO, a velocity position-based convergence (VPC) and wavelet mutation (WM) strategy are used to enhance RPSO’s swarm diversity. Moreover, this work also features novel circuit configurations based on the two-fold transconductance path (TTP), a technique used to improve linearity. A differential common source (DCS) amplifier is included in the primary transconductance path (PTP) of the TTP. As for the subsidiary transconductance path (STP), the enhanced cross-quad transconductor (ECQT) is implemented within the TTP. A benchmark function verification is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the RPSO algorithm. The proposed RPSO has also been compared with other optimization algorithms such as the genetic algorithm (GA) and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). By using RPSO, the proposed optimized mixer achieves a conversion gain (CG) of 2.5 dB (measured). In this study, the proposed mixer achieves a 1 dB compression point (OP1dB) of 4.2 dBm with a high linearity. In the proposed mixer, the noise figure (NF) is approximately 3.1 dB. While the power dissipation of the optimized mixer is 3.24 mW. Additionally, the average time for RPSO to design an up-conversion mixer is 4.535 s. Simulation and measured results demonstrate the excellent performance of the RPSO optimized up-conversion mixer.

Investigating the dynamic evolution process of the ocean and ionosphere in sudden sea conditions poses a challenging problem. To address this objective, this study utilizes actual data from high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) to analyze, validate, summarize, and characterize the echo properties of the ocean and ionosphere during the severe Typhoon Muifa. By employing the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method, the HFSWR ocean and ionosphere echoes stimulated by typhoon-induced gravity waves are observed, and the joint gravity wave features of the ocean and ionosphere echoes at different time scales are extracted. Additionally, the phase-space reconstruction method is employed to characterize the dynamical evolution of the joint gravity wave features in higher-dimensional space. Furthermore, the chaotic dynamics behavior of the joint gravity wave features is analyzed using the largest Lyapunov exponents. By combining the gravity wave features with chaotic dynamics, this study introduces a method to characterize the joint gravity wave features. The extraction of joint gravity wave features in HFSWR echoes stimulated by typhoons, along with the construction of a chaotic characterization scheme for the gravity wave features, provides an innovative approach and a solid technical foundation for studying the ocean and ionosphere using HFSWR under sudden sea conditions.

Automatic fall detection plays a significant role in monitoring the health of senior citizens. In particular, millimeter-wave radar sensors are relevant for human pose recognition in an indoor environment due to their advantages of privacy protection, low hardware cost, and wide range of working conditions. However, low-quality point clouds from 4D radar diminish the reliability of fall detection. To improve the detection accuracy, conventional methods utilize more costly hardware. In this study, we propose a model that can provide high-quality three-dimensional point cloud images of the human body at a low cost. To improve the accuracy and effectiveness of fall detection, a system that extracts distribution features through small radar antenna arrays is developed. The proposed system achieved 99.1% and 98.9% accuracy on test datasets pertaining to new subjects and new environments, respectively.

The importance of radar-based human activity recognition has increased significantly over the last two decades in safety and smart surveillance applications due to its superiority in vision-based sensing in the presence of poor environmental conditions like low illumination, increased radiative heat, occlusion, and fog. Increased public sensitivity to privacy protection and the progress of cost-effective manufacturing have led to higher acceptance and distribution of this technology. Deep learning approaches have proven that manual feature extraction that relies heavily on process knowledge can be avoided due to its hierarchical, non-descriptive nature. On the other hand, ML techniques based on manual feature extraction provide a robust, yet empirical-based approach, where the computational effort is comparatively low. This review outlines the basics of classical ML- and DL-based human activity recognition and its advances, taking the recent progress in both categories into account. For every category, state-of-the-art methods are introduced, briefly explained, and their related works summarized. A comparative study is performed to evaluate the performance and computational effort based on a benchmarking dataset to provide a common basis for the assessment of the techniques’ degrees of suitability.

Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar is increasingly used for various detection and classification applications in different fields, such as autonomous vehicles and mining fields. Our objective is to increase the classification accuracy of objects detected using millimeter-wave radar. We have developed an approach based on millimeter-wave radar. The proposed solution combines the use of an FMCW radar, a YOLOv7 model, and the Pix2Pix architecture. The latter architecture was used to reduce noise in the heatmaps. We create a dataset of 4125 heatmaps annotated with five different object classes. To evaluate the proposed approach, 14 different models were trained using the annotated heatmap dataset. In the initial experiment, we compared the models using metrics such as mean average precision (mAP), precision, and recall. The results showed that the proposed model of YOLOv7 (YOLOv7-PM) was the most efficient in terms of mAP_0.5, which reached 90.1%, and achieved a mAP_0.5:0.95 of 49.51%. In the second experiment, we compared the models with a cleaned dataset generated using the Pix2Pix architecture. As a result, we observed improved performances, with the Pix2Pix + YOLOv7-PM model achieving the best mAP_0.5, reaching 91.82%, and a mAP_0.5:0.95 of 52.59%.

The heart is an important organ that maintains human life activities, and its movement reflects its health status. Utilizing electromagnetic waves as a sensing tool, radar sensors enable noncontact measurement of cardiac motion, offering advantages over conventional contact-based methods in terms of comfort, hygiene, and efficiency. In this study, the high-precision displacement detection algorithm of radar is applied to measure cardiac motion. Experimental is conducted using a single out-channel frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar operating in the ISM frequency band with a center frequency of 24 GHz and a bandwidth of 150 MHz. Since the detection signal is influenced by both respiratory and heartbeat movements, it is necessary to eliminate the respiratory signal from the measurement signal. Firstly, the harmonic composition of the respiratory signal is analyzed, and a method is proposed to calculate the parameters of the respiratory waveform by comparing the respiratory waveform coverage area with the area of the circumscribed rectangle. This allows for determining the number of respiratory harmonics, assisting in determining whether respiratory harmonics overlap with the frequency range of the heartbeat signal. Subsequently, a more accurate cardiac motion waveform is extracted. A reference basis is provided for extracting cardiac health information from radar measurement waveforms by analyzing the corresponding relationship between certain extreme points of the waveform and characteristic positions of the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. This is achieved by eliminating the fundamental frequency component of the heartbeat waveform to emphasize other spectral components present in the heartbeat signal and comparing the heartbeat waveform, the heartbeat waveform with the fundamental frequency removed, and the heartbeat velocity waveform with synchronized ECG signals.

In classical radar imaging, such as in Earth remote sensing, electromagnetic waves are usually assumed to propagate in free space. However, in numerous applications, such as ground penetrating radar or non-destructive testing, this assumption no longer holds. When there is a multi-material background, the subsurface image reconstruction becomes considerably more complex. Imaging can be performed in the spatial domain or, equivalently, in the wavenumber domain (k-space). In subsurface imaging, to date, objects with a non-planar surface are commonly reconstructed in the spatial domain, by the Backprojection algorithm combined with ray tracing, which is computationally demanding. On the other hand, objects with a planar surface can be reconstructed more efficiently in k-space. However, many non-planar surfaces are partly planar. Therefore, in this paper, a novel concept is introduced that makes use of the efficient k-space-based reconstruction algorithms for partly planar scenarios, too. The proposed algorithm forms an image from superposing sub-images where as many image parts as possible are reconstructed in the wavenumber domain, and only as many as necessary are reconstructed in the spatial domain. For this, a segmentation scheme is developed to determine which parts of the image volume can be reconstructed in the wavenumber domain. The novel concept is verified by measurements, both from monostatic synthetic aperture radar data and multiple-input–multiple-output radar data. It is shown that the computational efficiency for imaging irregularly shaped geometries can be significantly augmented when applying the proposed concept.

In radar entomology, one primary challenge is detecting small species (smaller than 5 cm) since these tiny insects reflect radiation that can be poorly observable and, therefore, difficult to interpret. After a literature search on radar entomology, this research found few works where it has been possible to sense insects with dimensions smaller than 5 cm using radars. This paper describes different methodologies to detect Mediterranean fruit flies with 5–6 mm sizes using a pulsed W-band radar and presents the experimental results that validate the procedures. The article’s main contribution is the successful detection of Mediterranean fruit flies employing the shadow effect on the backscattered radar signal, achieving an 11% difference in received power when flies are present. So far, according to the information available and the literature search, this work is the first to detect small insects less than 1 cm long using a pulsed radar in W-Band. The results show that the proposed shadow effect is a viable alternative to the current sensors used in smart traps, as it allows not only detection but also counting the number of insects in the trap.

Hebrus Valles is an outflow channel system in the plain-forming terrains of southeastern Utopia Planitia, Mars. These terrains may have formed through a combination of liquid water and volcanic processes, yet their nature, subsurface structure, and composition remain unclear. We investigate these terrains by mapping subsurface reflectors across 540 Shallow Radar (SHARAD) profiles and applying two complementary loss tangent inversion techniques. We find moderate loss tangent values across some subregions of Granicus Valles and Hyblaeus Fossae (tan δ = 0.0162 ± 0.0004 and tan δ = 0.019 ± 0.002, respectively), suggesting the presence of basaltic lava flows. We interpret non-detections in the other flows in Granicus Valles to be due to the presence of radar-lossy materials formed through aqueous processes, which supports the hypothesized occurrence of lahars in this region. A small area near Hebrus Valles exhibits subsurface reflectors with low to moderate loss tangents (tan δ = 0.010 ± 0.003), suggesting the presence of pristine lava flows or sedimentary materials capped by lava flows. We also find a widespread occurrence of very low-loss tangent materials near Hyblaeus Dorsa (tan δ = 0.0045 ± 0.0002), which may represent a lobe of the Medusae Fossae Formation or similar high-porosity materials buried underneath a lava flow. Together, these findings suggest that volcanic activity played a central role in the formation of terrains across the broader Hebrus Valles region.

A general limitation in assessing the accuracy of land cover mapping is the availability of ground truth data. At sites where ground truth is not available, potentially inaccurate proxy datasets are used for sub-field-scale resolution investigations at large spatial scales, i.e., in the Contiguous United States. The USDA/NASS Cropland Data Layer (CDL) is a popular agricultural land cover dataset due to its high accuracy (>80%), resolution (30 m), and inclusions of many land cover and crop types. However, because the CDL is derived from satellite imagery and has resulting uncertainties, comparisons to available in situ data are necessary for verifying classification performance. This study compares the cropland mapping accuracies (crop/non-crop) of an optical approach (CDL) and the radar-based crop area (CA) approach used for the upcoming NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) L- and S-band mission but using Sentinel-1 C-band data. CDL and CA performance are compared to ground truth data that includes 54 agricultural production and research fields located at USDA’s Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) in Maryland, USA. We also evaluate non-crop mapping accuracy using twenty-six built-up and thirteen forest sites at BARC. The results show that the CDL and CA have a good pixel-wise agreement with one another (87%). However, the CA is notably more accurate compared to ground truth data than the CDL. The 2017–2021 mean accuracies for the CDL and CA, respectively, are 77% and 96% for crop, 100% and 94% for built-up, and 100% and 100% for forest, yielding an overall accuracy of 86% for the CDL and 96% for CA. This difference mainly stems from the CDL under-detecting crop cover at BARC, especially in 2017 and 2018. We also note that annual accuracy levels varied less for the CA (91–98%) than for the CDL (79–93%). This study demonstrates that a computationally inexpensive radar-based cropland mapping approach can also give accurate results over complex landscapes with accuracies similar to or better than optical approaches.

Background: The most common form of vascular access for hemodialysis is a native arteriovenous fistula, which connects the site of the artery to the end of the vein. The maturation process of the fistula plays a crucial role in the establishment of a functional vascular access. Radial artery stenosis is among the potential causes of maturation failure. In these cases, improving the fistula’s blood flow may be difficult, as traditional surgical reanastomosis and endovascular intervention frequently fail. Radial artery deviation and reimplantation (RADAR) is a novel and effective technique for creating primary fistulas with a high patency rate. The main disadvantage of this procedure is the ligation of the radial artery and the subsequent known consequences. Methods: To accelerate maturation, we used RADAR as a secondary approach in three patients with radial artery stenosis and maturation failure. Results: In all patients after surgery, we observed a significant increase in fistula blood flow. Two patients used fistulas for hemodialysis after surgery. We describe the image diagnosis, procedure, and benefits of this method. Conclusions: The RADAR technique may be successfully used as a secondary access in patients with maturation failure due to RA stenosis to accelerate fistula maturation.

In the framework of the ESA-NASA Joint Aeolus Tropical Atlantic Campaign (JATAC), the ASKOS experiment was implemented during the summer and autumn of 2021 and 2022. ASKOS comprised roughly 9 weeks of measurements in the Saharan dust outflow towards the North Atlantic, with operations conducted from the Cabo Verde Islands. Through its unprecedented dataset of synergistic measurements in the region, ASKOS will allow for the calibration and validation of the aerosol/cloud product from Aeolus and the preparation of the terrain for EarthCARE cal/val activities. Moreover, ASKOS marks a turning point in our ability to study Saharan dust properties and the processes affecting its atmospheric transport, as well as the link to other components of the Earth’s system, such as the effect of dust particles on cloud formation over the Eastern Atlantic and the effect of large and giant particles on radiation. This is possible through the synergy of diverse observations acquired during the experiment, which include intense 24/7 ground-based aerosol, cloud, wind, and radiation remote sensing measurements, and UAV-based aerosol in situ measurements within the Saharan air layer, up to 5.3 km altitude, offering particle size-distributions up to 40 μm as well as sample collection for mineralogical analysis. We provide an outline of the novel measurements along with the main scientific objectives of ASKOS. The campaign data will be publicly available by September of 2023 through the EVDC portal (ESA Validation Data Center).

The monitoring of Natura 2000 habitats (Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC) is a key activity ensuring the sufficient protection of European biodiversity. Reporting on the status of Natura 2000 habitats is required every 6 years. Although field mapping is still an indispensable source of data on the status of Natura 2000 habitats, and very good field-based data exist in some countries, keeping the field-based habitat maps up to date can be an issue. Remote sensing techniques represent an excellent alternative. Here, we present a new method for detecting habitats that were likely misclassified during the field mapping or that have changed since then. The method identifies the possible habitat mapping errors as the so-called “attribute outliers”, i.e., outlying observations in the feature space of all relevant (spectral and other) characteristics of an individual habitat patch. We used the Czech Natura 2000 Habitat Layer as field-based habitat data. To prepare the feature space of habitat characteristics, we used a fusion of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite data along with a Digital Elevation Model. We compared outlier ratings using the robust Mahalanobis distance and Local Outlier Factor using three different thresholds (Tukey rule, histogram-based Scott’s rule, and 95% quantiles in χ2 distribution). The Mahalanobis distance thresholded by the 95% χ2 quantile achieved the best results, and, because of its high specificity, appeared as a promising tool for identifying erroneously mapped or changed habitats. The presented method can, therefore, be used as a guide to target field updates of Natura 2000 habitat maps or for other habitat/land cover mapping activities where the detection of misclassifications or changes is needed.

This paper focuses on the topic of joint communication and radar sensing (JCRS) and its applications in the scope of upcoming sixth-generation (6G) technology. While the fifth-generation applications have reached the consumer market in the last few years, JCRS has been identified as one of the key technologies for next generation networks. The role of JCRS will vary, ranging from tasks such as radar coordination, context awareness for communication, enhanced security, increased availability, and improving the resilience and trustworthiness of future networks. In this work, the niche of JCRS technology in the future 6G ecosystem, as well as several potential applications, are discussed with a focus on RF hardware. The use of centimeter (cmWave) and millimeter (mmWave) frequency spectrums in the context of JCRS system implementation have been further elaborated. After presenting the near-term application scenarios, the circuit implementation perspectives are investigated in terms of radio frequency (RF) front-end architectures, antenna implementation, and phased arrays. Different communication and radar antenna options are compared, and the best candidates are identified. The packaging options are also presented. From circuit and system perspectives, link budget and self-interference cancellation (SIC) are highlighted. Furthermore, future directions including the next steps on the path to enabling JCRS technology are presented throughout this article. Prior works focused more on physical layers and network capabilities of JCRS systems, with less focus on hardware possibilities; to fill this gap, this article aims to contribute to this exciting research topic with a holistic review of RF hardware, highlighting the diversity of applications and the available technologies to tackle the near- and long-term needs of consumer applications.

Greece was hit by an extreme heat wave, with a significant impact on human health and natural ecosystems in the period between 28 July and 11 August 2021. After the end of this unusual warm period, a rare occasion of multiple supercell storms was observed on 11 August 2021 in northern and central Greece. The synoptic conditions indicated embedded short waves in a northwesterly flow and significant thermal instability across the regions of interest was evident. In conjunction with the strong vertical wind, shear organized convection was released. At least six long-track supercells were documented and the onset, evolution and specific characteristics of them are presented. All supercells moved from NW toward SE, accompanied by large hail, intense rainfall and destructive wind gusts, producing widespread damage along their track.

This research aims to propose a comprehensive simulation and implementation methodology for LFM (Linear Frequency Modulated) Radar Signal Processing and its application, using digital signal processing techniques on the DSP Starter Kit (DSK) 6713 board. The motivation behind this study is to develop control software based on MATLAB R14 and SIMULINK to model various system software tasks, including detection, A/D conversion, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), modulation, accumulation, decision-making, and target detection. The simulations are categorized into two groups: ideal beat frequency and parameterized beat frequency. We introduce several important terminologies for consideration, including pulse compression, SNR, matched filter, Doppler effect, and more. The use of real-time data exchange (RTDX) will facilitate the generation of input data and enable real-time calculations for outputs, leading to the creation of machine code for the DSP chip. This process aims to ensure data verification calculations and enhance the credibility and performance of the proposed methodology. By conducting thorough simulations, verification, and practical testing, the study demonstrates the satisfactory credibility and performance of the developed method. Using this research, we aim to contribute to the advancement of LFM Radar Signal Processing and enable its efficient implementation using digital signal processing techniques on the DSP Starter Kit (DSK) 6713 board.

Depth estimation is an important part of the perception system in autonomous driving. Current studies often reconstruct dense depth maps from RGB images and sparse depth maps obtained from other sensors. However, existing methods often pay insufficient attention to latent semantic information. Considering the highly structured characteristics of driving scenes, we propose a dual-branch network to predict dense depth maps by fusing radar and RGB images. The driving scene is divided into three parts in the proposed architecture, each predicting a depth map, which is finally merged into one by implementing the fusion strategy in order to make full use of the potential semantic information in the driving scene. In addition, a variant L1 loss function is applied in the training phase, directing the network to focus more on those areas of interest when driving. Our proposed method is evaluated on the nuScenes dataset. Experiments demonstrate its effectiveness in comparison with previous state of the art methods.

In modern security situations, tracking multiple human objects in real-time within challenging urban environments is a critical capability for enhancing situational awareness, minimizing response time, and increasing overall operational effectiveness. Tracking multiple entities enables informed decision-making, risk mitigation, and the safeguarding of civil-military operations to ensure safety and mission success. This paper presents a multi-modal electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) and radio frequency (RF) fused sensing (MEIRFS) platform for real-time human object detection, recognition, classification, and tracking in challenging environments. By utilizing different sensors in a complementary manner, the robustness of the sensing system is enhanced, enabling reliable detection and recognition results across various situations. Specifically designed radar tags and thermal tags can be used to discriminate between friendly and non-friendly objects. The system incorporates deep learning-based image fusion and human object recognition and tracking (HORT) algorithms to ensure accurate situation assessment. After integrating into an all-terrain robot, multiple ground tests were conducted to verify the consistency of the HORT in various environments. The MEIRFS sensor system has been designed to meet the Size, Weight, Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) requirements for installation on autonomous ground and aerial vehicles.

This study presents a comparative analysis of flood simulations using rain gauge, ground- and space-borne radar precipitation products. The objectives are to assess the effectiveness of two radar-based data sources, namely the Radar-AWS Rainrates (RAR) and Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), in a dam watershed with gauge observations, and explore the modeling feasibility of integrating the half-hourly IMERG satellite precipitation in regions with ungauged or limited observational area. Two types of HEC-HMS models were developed, considering areal-averaged and spatially distributed gridded data simulations utilizing eight selected storm events. The findings indicate that the RAR data, although slightly underestimate precipitation compared to the gauge measurements, accurately reproduce hydrographs without requiring parameter adjustments (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency, ENS, 0.863; coefficient of determination, R2, 0.873; and percent bias, PBIAS, 7.49%). On the other hand, flood simulations using the IMERG data exhibit lower model efficiency and correlation, suggesting potential limitations in ungauged watersheds. Nevertheless, with available discharge data, the calibrated model using IMERG shows prospects for utilization (ENS 0.776, R2 0.787, and PBIAS 7.15%). Overall, this research offers insights into flood simulations using various precipitation products, emphasizing the significance of reliable discharge data for accurate hydrological modeling and the need for further evaluation of the IMERG product.

Rice is a staple food that feeds nearly half of the world’s population. With the population of our planet expected to keep growing, it is crucial to carry out accurate mapping, monitoring, and assessments since these could significantly impact food security, climate change, spatial planning, and land management. Using the PRISMA systematic review protocol, this article identified and selected 122 scientific articles (journals papers and conference proceedings) addressing different remote sensing-based methodologies to map paddy croplands, published between 2010 and October 2022. This analysis includes full coverage of the mapping of rice paddies and their various stages of crop maturity. This review paper classifies the methods based on the data source: (a) multispectral (62%), (b) multisource (20%), and (c) radar (18%). Furthermore, it analyses the impact of machine learning on those methodologies and the most common algorithms used. We found that MODIS (28%), Sentinel-2 (18%), Sentinel-1 (15%), and Landsat-8 (11%) were the most used sensors. The impact of Sentinel-1 on multisource solutions is also increasing due to the potential of backscatter information to determine textures in different stages and decrease cloud cover constraints. The preferred solutions include phenology algorithms via the use of vegetation indices, setting thresholds, or applying machine learning algorithms to classify images. In terms of machine learning algorithms, random forest is the most used (17 times), followed by support vector machine (12 times) and isodata (7 times). With the continuous development of technology and computing, it is expected that solutions such as multisource solutions will emerge more frequently and cover larger areas in different locations and at a higher resolution. In addition, the continuous improvement of cloud detection algorithms will positively impact multispectral solutions.

It is known that X-ray and gamma-ray pulsars can only be observed by spacecraft because signals from these pulsars are impossible to be detected on the Earth’s surface due to their strong absorption by the Earth’s atmosphere. The article is devoted to the theoretical aspects regarding the development of an autonomous radio navigation system for transport with a small receiving antenna, using radio signals from pulsars, similar to navigation systems for space navigation. Like GNSS systems (X-ray and radio), they use signals from four suitable pulsars to position the object. These radio pulsars (out of 50) are not uniformly distributed but are grouped in certain directions (at least 6 clusters can be determined). When using small antennas (with an area of up to tens of square meters) for pulsar navigation, the energy of the pulsar signals received within a few minutes is extremely insufficient to obtain the required level of SNR at the output of the receiver to form TOA estimation, ensuring positioning accuracy up to tens of kilometers. This is one of the scientific tasks that is solved in the paper by studying the relationship between the SNR of the receiver output, which depends on the size of the antenna, the type of signal processing, and the magnitude of the TOA accuracy estimate. The second scientific task that is solved in the paper is the adaptation of all the possible approaches and algorithms suggested in the statistical theory of radars in the suggested signal algorithm for antenna processing and to evaluate the parameters of the TOA and DS pulsar signals, in order to increase the SNR ratio at the receiver output, while preserving the dimensions of the antenna. In this paper, the functional structure of signal processing in a pulsar transport navigation system is proposed, and the choice of the observed second and millisecond pulsars for obtaining a more accurate TOA estimate is discussed. The proposed estimates of positioning accuracy (TOA only, no phase) in an autonomous pulsar vehicle navigation system would only be suitable for the navigation of large vehicles (sea, air, or land) that do not require accurate navigation at sea, air, or desert. Large-sized antennas with an area of tens of square meters to hundreds of square meters can be installed in such vehicles.

Dynamics in atmospheric structures are analyzed using the Scale Relativity Theory in Schrödinger-type and Madelung-type scenarios. In the Schrödinger-type scenario, the group invariances of the special linear group SL(2R)-type under Riccati-type gauges implies morphological atmospheric manifestations through frequency modulation, particularly through period doubling. In the Madelung-type scenario, the same group invariances type, manifested through harmonic mappings, implies the functionality of atmospheric mass conductions through mass superconducting-type by scale transition from nondifferentiable atmospheric dynamics to differentiable atmospheric dynamics. The compatibility of these two scenarios under the correlations of atmospheric morphologies-functionalities implies Stoler-type coherences of the atmospheric dynamics through the removal of atmospheric turbulence by means of laminar channels. Finally, these theories are successfully employed to analyze the vertical atmospheric dynamics of cases of insect swarms.

This paper proposes an optimization method to improve the radar anti-jamming strategy by using the predictability of left game interval. Firstly, we propose the concept of key time nodes in radar/jammer confrontation and analyze its predictability. Secondly, we analyze the radar-winning scenarios by considering the temporal constraints and construct the actual utility matrix of the radar. Then, we describe the optimization algorithm using radar-winning probability statistics based on the prediction of left game interval. Finally, we carry out a simulation experiment by comparing it with other anti-jamming strategies to verify the rationality, and the result shows that the proposed method can significantly improve the radar’s winning probability in the confrontation. By using the proposed anti-jamming strategy optimization method just at the key time nodes, the imperceptibility from the jammer is improved, and its long-term superiority can be maintained in the confrontation.

Radar is a non-contact, high-precision vibration measurement device and an important tool for bridge vibration monitoring. Vibration information needs to be extracted from the radar phase, but the radar phase information is sensitive to noise. Under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data acquisition conditions, such as low radar transmission power or a long observation distance, differential phase jump errors occur and clutter estimation becomes difficult, which leads to inaccurate inversion of vibration deformation. Traditional low-pass filtering methods can filter out noise to improve SNR, but they require oversampling. The sampling rate needs to be several times higher than the Doppler bandwidth, which is several times higher than the vibration frequency. This puts high data acquisition requirements on radar systems and causes large data volumes. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel vibration signal filtering method called the periodic filtering method. The method uses the periodicity feature of vibration signals for filtering without oversampling. This paper derives the time-domain and frequency-domain expressions for the periodic filter and presents a deformation inversion process based on them. The process involves extracting the vibration frequency in the Doppler domain, suppressing noise through periodic filtering, estimating clutter using circle fitting on the data complex plane, and inverting final deformation with differential phase. The method is verified through simulation experiments, calibration experiments, and bridge vibration experiments. The results show that the new periodic filtering method can improve the SNR by five times, resolve differential phase jumps, and accurately estimate clutter, thus getting submillimeter-level vibration deformation at low SNR.

This paper describes the work for the radar signal processor, the core of the Cheia space surveillance radar. It presents the basic operation, the requirements and the achieved processing performance together with a description of optimizations both in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and in terms of software processing. The Cheia Radar is financed by the European Space Agency and will be used for the tracking of low Earth orbit objects and for refining the international catalogs of space objects.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for point cloud complementation called PADPNet. Our approach uses a combination of global and local information to infer missing elements in the point cloud. We achieve this by dividing the input point cloud into uniform local regions, called perceptual fields, which are abstractly understood as special convolution kernels. The set of point clouds in each local region is represented as a feature vector and transformed into N uniform perceptual fields as the input to our transformer model. We also designed a geometric density-aware block to better exploit the inductive bias of the point cloud’s 3D geometric structure. Our method preserves sharp edges and detailed structures that are often lost in voxel-based or point-based approaches. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms other methods in reducing the ambiguity of output results. Our proposed method has important applications in 3D computer vision and can efficiently recover complete 3D object shapes from missing point clouds.

In surveillance and monitoring systems, the use of mobile vehicles or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), like the drone type, provides advantages in terms of access to the environment with enhanced range, maneuverability, and safety due to the ability to move omnidirectionally to explore, identify, and perform some security tasks. These activities must be performed autonomously by capturing data from the environment; usually, the data present errors and uncertainties that impact the recognition and resolution in the detection and identification of objects. The resolution in the acquisition of data can be improved by integrating data sensor fusion systems to measure the same physical phenomenon from two or more sensors by retrieving information simultaneously. This paper uses the constant turn and rate velocity (CTRV) kinematic model of a drone but includes the angular velocity not considered in previous works as a complementary alternative in Lidar and Radar data sensor fusion retrieved using UAVs and applying the extended Kalman filter (EKF) for the detection of moving targets. The performance of the EKF is evaluated by using a dataset that jointly includes position data captured from a LiDAR and a Radar sensor for an object in movement following a trajectory with sudden changes. Additive white Gaussian noise is then introduced into the data to degrade the data. Then, the root mean square error (RMSE) versus the increase in noise power is evaluated, and the results show an improvement of 0.4 for object detection over other conventional kinematic models that do not consider significant trajectory changes.

Weather radar plays an important role in accurate weather monitoring and modern weather forecasting, as it can provide timely and refined weather forecasts for the public and for decision makers. Deep learning has been applied in radar nowcasting tasks and has exhibited a better performance than traditional radar echo extrapolation methods. However, current deep learning-based radar nowcasting models are found to suffer from a spatial “blurry” effect that can be attributed to a deficiency in spatial variability representation. This study proposes a Spatial Variability Representation Enhancement (SVRE) loss function and an effective nowcasting model, named the Attentional Generative Adversarial Network (AGAN), to alleviate this blurry effect by enhancing the spatial variability representation of radar nowcasting. An ablation experiment and a comparison experiment were implemented to assess the effect of the generative adversarial (GA) training strategy and the SVRE loss, as well as to compare the performance of the AGAN and SVRE loss function with the current advanced radar nowcasting models. The performances of the models were validated on the whole test set and inspected in two storm cases. The results showed that both the GA strategy and SVRE loss function could alleviate the blurry effect by enhancing the spatial variability representation, which helps the AGAN to achieve better nowcasting performance than the other competitor models. Our study provides a feasible solution for high-precision radar nowcasting applications.

This study presents a novel multimodal heterogeneous perception cross-fusion framework for intelligent vehicles that combines data from millimeter-wave radar and camera to enhance target tracking accuracy and handle system uncertainties. The framework employs a multimodal interaction strategy to predict target motion more accurately and an improved joint probability data association method to match measurement data with targets. An adaptive root-mean-square cubature Kalman filter is used to estimate the statistical characteristics of noise under complex traffic scenarios with varying process and measurement noise. Experiments conducted on a real vehicle platform demonstrate that the proposed framework improves reliability and robustness in challenging environments. It overcomes the challenges of insufficient data fusion utilization, frequent leakage, and misjudgment of dangerous obstructions around vehicles, and inaccurate prediction of collision risks. The proposed framework has the potential to advance the state of the art in target tracking and perception for intelligent vehicles.

The change in raindrop spectrum characteristics is an important factor affecting the accuracy of estimations of precipitation. The in-depth study of raindrop spectrum characteristics is of great interest for understanding precipitation process and improving quantitative radar precipitation estimation. In this paper, the raindrop size distributions at Longli (57913), Puding (57808) and Luodian (57916) stations in Guizhou were analyzed from the perspective of precipitation microphysical characteristics. The results showed that the raindrop size distribution was different among different regions. The correlation coefficients of the mass-weighted average diameter for the rain intensities at these three stations were 46.89%, 49.51%, and 47.03%, respectively, which were slightly lower than the normal correlation coefficients of the average volume diameter for the rain intensities: 67.80%, 71.28%, and 71.46%, respectively. Based on the data from the Guiyang weather radar, raindrop spectrometer, and automatic rain gauge, the dynamic Z-I relationship method and the LSTM neural network method were used to estimate precipitation. The correlation coefficients of the dynamic Z-I relationship method and the LSTM neural network method at the three stations studied were 0.8432, 0.7763, and 0.8658 and 0.8745, 0.9125, and 0.8676, respectively. Regarding the process of stratiform cloud precipitation, the correlation coefficients of the dynamic Z-I relationship method and LSTM neural network method at the three stations were 0.6933, 0.0902, and 0.1409 and 0.7114, 0.4984, and 0.4902, respectively. In the estimation of cumulative precipitation for 45 days from 1 July to 16 August 2020, the relative errors of the neural network estimation at the three stations were −4.25%, −11.35%, and −8.68% and the relative errors of the dynamic Z-I relationship estimation were −2.68%, −7.41%, and −21.23%, respectively. The final relative error of the neural network was slightly worse than that of the dynamic Z-I relationship in the cumulative precipitation estimations of Longli station and Puding station, but the overall correlation coefficients of the LSTM neural network method were better than those of the dynamic Z-I relationship method.
