Background and Objective: Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (MIS-TLIF) has been investigated and shown excellent short- and long-term outcomes. In this paper, we describe a new MIS-TLIF technique and pedicle screw insertion using a marker screw as a guidance method. Moreover, we report perioperative, postoperative, and patient-related outcomes. In addition, this paper outlines major differences in radiation exposure, cost effectiveness and accuracy of Marker Screw Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Interbody Fusion (MS-MIS TLIF) compared to other techniques. We report our technique to share our knowledge and experience with the aim of achieving a better MIS-TLIF that would help both surgeons and patients. Materials and Methods: A prospective case series was conducted between October 2018 and February 2021. Patients undergoing MS-MIS TLIF with marker screws were consecutively included. The surgery did not exceed two levels. The patients’ medical records were reviewed, and the included patients were asked to complete two outcome-questionnaires before surgery and at the six-month visit. The surgical technique is described in this paper. Results: A total of 37 patients were recruited. The mean age was 57.35 ± 12.8 years, and more than half of the patients were females. The most common indications for surgery were degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis, with the typical level at L4–5. The operative time was 3.02 ± 0.83 h, while the estimated blood loss was 127.7 ± 71.1 mL. The average time for ambulation and hospitalization was 1 ± 1.1 and 2.84 ± 1.4 days, respectively. The patients described significant improvement in both questionnaires. No screw-related complications or screw revisions were needed up to two years of follow-up. Conclusions: The use of marker screws for pedicle screw placement through a minimally invasive fashion is shown to be a promising technique that can overcome many drawbacks, including cost, operative time, and radiation exposure. Performing MS-MIS TLIF can achieve a 360- degree fusion compared to percutaneous MIS-TLIF.

This paper aims to address the limitations of the distribution number and uniformity of Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) and their impact on the reliability of inverting regional groundwater storage (GWS) based on Green’s function method and using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data. A fusion method on the inversion of regional GWS changes from GNSS and the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) was proposed in this paper. Taking the Shaanxi–Gansu–Ningxia (SGN) region as an example, the in situ groundwater level data from ten CORS stations and eight wells were used for test analyses. In this paper, an atmospheric pressure model from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), a global land data assimilation system (GLDAS), a WaterGAP global hydrology model (WGHM), and mean sea level anomaly (MSLA) data were used to quantitatively monitor the influence of vertical deformation caused by non-tidal environmental load. After deducing these loading deformations from the filtered time series of non-linear monthly geodetic height from the GNSS, the GWS changes in the SGN region from 2011 to 2014 were inverted. Meanwhile, the change in surface water storage from the GLDAS and WGHM models were removed from the terrestrial water storage (TWS) changes derived from GRACE. On this basis, the remove–restore theory in the Earth’s gravity field was introduced to both fuse the inversion results and obtain the regional GWS changes based on the fusion method. The results showed the following: (1) The local characteristics from the fusion results were more prominent than those of GRACE on the spatial scale, such as in the southwest and northeast in the study area. In addition, the fusion results were more uniform than those from GNSS, especially for the sparse and missing areas in which CORS stations were located, and the local effect was weakened. (2) On the time scale, compared with GRACE, the trends in GWS changes obtained from the fusion method and from GNSS inversion were roughly the same as the in situ groundwater level changes. (3) For the in situ groundwater wells “6105010031” and “6101260010”, the correlation coefficients of the fusion result were 0.53 and 0.56, respectively. The accuracy of the fusion method was slightly higher than that from GNSS, which indicates that the fusion method may be more effective for areas where CORS stations are missing or sparsely distributed. The methods in this paper can provide significant reference material for hydrodynamic research, sustainable management of water resources, and the dynamic maintenance of height data.

The mud receiving area is an important sand storage area for dredging sea sand reclamation and sand-dumping in the waterway. The sediment accumulation area generated in the process of sand dumping and sand storage has an impact on the surrounding transportation facilities and the normal use of the entire sand storage area. From 6 August 2021 to 9 May 2022, The Sentinel-1A 24-view SLC data covering the sludge area were used to monitor the safety around the seawall road by InSAR technology. Synthetic aperture radar differential interferometry (Differential InSAR, D-InSAR) technology can obtain surface micro deformation information through single-time differential interference processing, mainly used for sudden surface deformation. D-InSAR technology detected five accumulation areas with a thickness of more than 10 cm near the seawall road, earth embankment, and cofferdam, and TS-InSAR (Time series InSAR) technology was used to retrieve the deformation of the surrounding road. The road settlement is a slight settlement distributed between ±5 mm/a. This paper uses the leveling results combined with variance analysis to verify the fusion of different TS-InSAR methods while considering the area of data loss due to causes such as loss of coherence. This paper also considers the common ground continuity and uses the adjacent interpolation and bilinear interpolation algorithm to improve knowledge of the study area seawall road and the surrounding soil embankment deformation data of the road. Compared with the leveling data, the difference between the missing data and the leveling data after interpolation is stable at about 1–7 mm, which increases the risk level of part of the road which needs to be maintained. It provides a reference method to make up for the missing data caused by ground incoherence.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) radar poses prosperous opportunities surrounding multiple-object tracking and sensing as a unified system. One of the most challenging aspects of exploiting sensing opportunities with mmWave radar is the labeling of mmWave data so that, in turn, a respective model can be designed to achieve the desired tracking and sensing goals. The labeling of mmWave datasets usually involves a domain expert manually associating radar frames with key events of interest. This is a laborious means of labeling mmWave data. This paper presents a framework for training a mmWave radar with a camera as a means of labeling the data and supervising the radar model. The methodology presented in this paper is compared and assessed against existing frameworks that aim to achieve a similar goal. The practicality of the proposed framework is demonstrated through experimentation in varying environmental conditions. The proposed framework is applied to design a mmWave multi-object tracking system that is additionally capable of classifying individual human motion patterns, such as running, walking, and falling. The experimental findings demonstrate a reliably trained radar model that uses a camera for labeling and supervision that can consistently produce high classification accuracy across environments beyond those in which the model was trained against. The research presented in this paper provides a foundation for future research in unified tracking and sensing systems by alleviating the labeling and training challenges associated with designing a mmWave classification model.

Edge detection is the basis of image analysis and image processing. The wavelet modulus maxima algorithm is a widely used edge-detection algorithm. The algorithm has the advantages of strong anti-noise ability and high precision of edge location, but it still cannot accurately obtain edge information for low-contrast images. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved wavelet mode maximum edge algorithm for the fusion of light intensity and degree of polarization. The improved wavelet mode maximum algorithm was used to extract the edges of a light intensity image and degree of polarization image, and then refine and fuse the two edges to obtain the final edge information. Simulation experiments showed that the edge image obtained by the edge-detection algorithm in this paper had a clearer outline and better connectivity.

Considering transient processes where liquid/solid phase change occurs, this paper focuses on the associated modeling and numerical treatment in the frame of “Computational Fluid Dynamics” simulations. While being of importance in many industrial applications involving solidification and melting of mixed materials, including power and manufacturing engineering, the first application of this work pertains to the analysis of severe accidents in a nuclear reactor. Indeed, in this context, the molten core materials (a.k.a. corium) can form a high-temperature multiphase liquid pool at the boundary of which fusion and solidification phenomena are of prime importance. In this context, even if materials at play are treated as pure components, it is mandatory to distinguish two different phase change temperatures with a solid fusion temperature and a liquid solidification temperature. Accordingly, in the frame of a sharp interface representation, the paper introduces non-classical heterogeneous conditions at the liquid/solid boundary in such a way that both moving interface (through Stefan conditions associated with fusion or solidification) and static interface (imposing heat flux continuity) are supported at the same time on different spatial locations along this boundary. Within a monolithic resolution of Navier–Stokes and heat conduction equations, this interface is explicitly tracked with combined Front-Tracking and VOF methods. In order to ensure zero velocity in the solid phase, an Immersed Boundary Method and a direct forcing penalization are also introduced. The main relevant features of this combination of numerical methods are discussed along with their implementation in the TrioCFD code taking advantage of the pre-existing code capabilities. Numerical simulations including both verification tests and a case of interest for our industrial application are reported and demonstrate the applicability of the proposed triptych model+methods+code to treat such problems. The numerical tools and the simulation code developed in this work could be used not only in the several accident context but also to simulate melting, solidification and fusion processes occurring in aerodynamics, hypersonic reentry vehicles and laser applications to cite but a few.

Teleportation is an important protocol in quantum communication. Realizing teleportation between arbitrary nodes in multi-hop quantum networks is of great value. Most of the existing multi-hop quantum networks are based on Bell states or Greeberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Bell state is more susceptible to noise than GHZ states after purification, but generating a GHZ state consumes more basic states. In this paper, a new quantum multi-hop network scheme is proposed to improve the interference immunity of the network and avoid large consumption at the same time. Teleportation is realized in a network based on entanglement swapping, fusion, and purification. To ensure the robustness of the system, we also design the purification algorithm. The simulation results show the successful establishment of entanglement with high fidelity. Cirq is used to verify the network on the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) platform. The robustness of the fusion scheme is better than the Bell states scheme, especially with the increasing number of nodes. This paper provides a solution to balance the performance and consumption in a multi-hop quantum network.

A review of experimental studies carried out at the NRC “Kurchatov Institute” on plasma-facing thermonuclear fusion reactor materials is presented in the paper. An experimental method was developed to produce high-level radiation damage in materials simulating the neutron effect by surrogate irradiation with high-energy ions. Plasma-surface interaction is investigated on materials irradiated to high levels of radiation damage in high-flux deuterium plasma. The total fluence of accelerated ions (3–30 MeV, 4He2+, 12C3+, 14N3+, protons) on the samples was 1021–1023 m−2. Experiments were carried out on graphite materials, tungsten, and silicon carbide. Samples have been obtained with a primary defect concentration from 0.1 to 100 displacements per atom, which covers the predicted damage for the ITER and DEMO projects. Erosion dynamics of the irradiated materials in steady-state deuterium plasma, changes of the surface microstructure, and deuterium retention were studied using SEM, TEM, ERDA, TDS, and nuclear backscattering techniques. The surface layer of the materials (3 to hundreds µm) was investigated, and it was shown that the changes in the crystal structure, the loss of their symmetry, and diffusion of defects to grain boundaries play an important role. The most significant results are presented in the paper as an overview of our previous work for many years (carbon and tungsten materials) as well as the relatively recent results (silicon carbide).

Time-series data generally exists in many application fields, and the classification of time-series data is one of the important research directions in time-series data mining. In this paper, univariate time-series data are taken as the research object, deep learning and broad learning systems (BLSs) are the basic methods used to explore the classification of multi-modal time-series data features. Long short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit, and bidirectional LSTM networks are used to learn and test the original time-series data, and a Gramian angular field and recurrence plot are used to encode time-series data to images, and a BLS is employed for image learning and testing. Finally, to obtain the final classification results, Dempster–Shafer evidence theory (D–S evidence theory) is considered to fuse the probability outputs of the two categories. Through the testing of public datasets, the method proposed in this paper obtains competitive results, compensating for the deficiencies of using only time-series data or images for different types of datasets.

Aimed at the two problems of color deviation and poor visibility of the underwater image, this paper proposes an underwater image enhancement method based on the multi-scale fusion and global stretching of dual-model (MFGS), which does not rely on the underwater optical imaging model. The proposed method consists of three stages: Compared with other color correction algorithms, white-balancing can effectively eliminate the undesirable color deviation caused by medium attenuation, so it is selected to correct the color deviation in the first stage. Then, aimed at the problem of the poor performance of the saliency weight map in the traditional fusion processing, this paper proposed an updated strategy of saliency weight coefficient combining contrast and spatial cues to achieve high-quality fusion. Finally, by analyzing the characteristics of the results of the above steps, it is found that the brightness and clarity need to be further improved. The global stretching of the full channel in the red, green, blue (RGB) model is applied to enhance the color contrast, and the selective stretching of the L channel in the Commission International Eclairage-Lab (CIE-Lab) model is implemented to achieve a better de-hazing effect. Quantitative and qualitative assessments on the underwater image enhancement benchmark dataset (UIEBD) show that the enhanced images of the proposed approach achieve significant and sufficient improvements in color and visibility.

As they are the core components of the drive motor in electric vehicles, the accurate fault diagnosis of rolling bearings is the key to ensuring the safe operation of electric vehicles. At present, intelligent diagnostic methods based on current signals (CSs) are widely used owing to the advantages of the easy collection, low cost, and non-invasiveness of CSs. However, in practical applications, the fault characteristics of the CS are weak, resulting in diagnostic performance that fails to meet the expected standards. In this paper, a diagnosis method is proposed to address this problem and enhance the diagnosis accuracy. Firstly, CSs from two phases are processed by periodic resampling to enhance data features, which are then fused through splicing operations. Subsequently, a feature enhancement module is constructed using multi-scale feature fusion for decomposing the input. Finally, a diagnosis model is constructed by using an improved channel attention module (CAM) for enhancing the diagnosis performance. The results from experiments containing two different types of bearing datasets show that the proposed method can extract high-quality fault features and improve the diagnosis accuracy, presenting great potential in intelligent fault diagnosis and the maintenance of electric vehicles.

Modeling and simulation lie at the heart of the design process of any nuclear application. An accurate representation of the radiation environment ensures not only the feasibility of new technologies, but it also aids in operation, maintenance, and even decommissioning. With increasingly complex designs, high-fidelity models have become a necessity for design maturity. McCAD has been under development for many years at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) to facilitate the process of generating suitable models for nuclear analyses. In this paper, an overview of the major advances in the new version of the code is presented. A novel conversion algorithm has proven to be robust in significantly reducing the processing time to generate radiation transport models, making it easier to iterate on design details. A first-of-a-kind capability to generate hierarchical void cells is also discussed with preliminary analysis showing performance gains for particle tracking.

Hyperspectral image classification remains challenging despite its potential due to the high dimensionality of the data and its limited spatial resolution. To address the limited data samples and less spatial resolution issues, this research paper presents a two-scale module-based CTNet (convolutional transformer network) for the enhancement of spatial and spectral features. In the first module, a virtual RGB image is created from the HSI dataset to improve the spatial features using a pre-trained ResNeXt model trained on natural images, whereas in the second module, PCA (principal component analysis) is applied to reduce the dimensions of the HSI data. After that, spectral features are improved using an EAVT (enhanced attention-based vision transformer). The EAVT contained a multiscale enhanced attention mechanism to capture the long-range correlation of the spectral features. Furthermore, a joint module with the fusion of spatial and spectral features is designed to generate an enhanced feature vector. Through comprehensive experiments, we demonstrate the performance and superiority of the proposed approach over state-of-the-art methods. We obtained AA (average accuracy) values of 97.87%, 97.46%, 98.25%, and 84.46% on the PU, PUC, SV, and Houston13 datasets, respectively.

The integration of different remote sensing datasets acquired from optical and radar sensors can improve the overall performance and detection rate for mapping sub-surface archaeological remains. However, data fusion remains a challenge for archaeological prospection studies, since remotely sensed sensors have different instrument principles, operating in different wavelengths. Recent studies have demonstrated that some fusion modelling can be achieved under ideal measurement conditions (e.g., simultaneously measurements in no hazy days) using advance regression models, like those of the nonlinear Bayesian Neural Networks. This paper aims to go a step further and investigate the impact of noise in regression models, between datasets obtained from ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and portable field spectroradiometers. Initially, the GPR measurements provided three depth slices of 20 cm thickness, starting from 0.00 m up to 0.60 m below the ground surface while ground spectral signatures acquired from the spectroradiometer were processed to calculate 13 multispectral and 53 hyperspectral indices. Then, various levels of Gaussian random noise ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 of a normal distribution, with mean 0 and variance 1, were added at both GPR and spectral signatures datasets. Afterward, Bayesian Neural Network regression fitting was applied between the radar (GPR) versus the optical (spectral signatures) datasets. Different regression model strategies were implemented and presented in the paper. The overall results show that fusion with a noise level of up to 0.2 of the normal distribution does not dramatically drop the regression model between the radar and optical datasets (compared to the non-noisy data). Finally, anomalies appearing as strong reflectors in the GPR measurements, continue to provide an obvious contrast even with noisy regression modelling.

Reliable vision in challenging illumination conditions is one of the crucial requirements of future autonomous automotive systems. In the last decade, thermal cameras have become more easily accessible to a larger number of researchers. This has resulted in numerous studies which confirmed the benefits of the thermal cameras in limited visibility conditions. In this paper, we propose a learning-based method for visible and thermal image fusion that focuses on generating fused images with high visual similarity to regular truecolor (red-green-blue or RGB) images, while introducing new informative details in pedestrian regions. The goal is to create natural, intuitive images that would be more informative than a regular RGB camera to a human driver in challenging visibility conditions. The main novelty of this paper is the idea to rely on two types of objective functions for optimization: a similarity metric between the RGB input and the fused output to achieve natural image appearance; and an auxiliary pedestrian detection error to help defining relevant features of the human appearance and blending them into the output. We train a convolutional neural network using image samples from variable conditions (day and night) so that the network learns the appearance of humans in the different modalities and creates more robust results applicable in realistic situations. Our experiments show that the visibility of pedestrians is noticeably improved especially in dark regions and at night. Compared to existing methods we can better learn context and define fusion rules that focus on the pedestrian appearance, while that is not guaranteed with methods that focus on low-level image quality metrics.

A hybrid segmentation algorithm is proposed is this paper to extract the blood vessels from the fundus image of retina. Fundus camera captures the posterior surface of the eye and the captured images are used to diagnose diseases, like Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinoblastoma, Retinal haemorrhage, etc. Segmentation or extraction of blood vessels is highly required, since the analysis of vessels is crucial for diagnosis, treatment planning, and execution of clinical outcomes in the field of ophthalmology. It is derived from the literature review that no unique segmentation algorithm is suitable for images of different eye-related diseases and the degradation of the vessels differ from patient to patient. If the blood vessels are extracted from the fundus images, it will make the diagnosis process easier. Hence, this paper aims to frame a hybrid segmentation algorithm exclusively for the extraction of blood vessels from the fundus image. The proposed algorithm is hybridized with morphological operations, bottom hat transform, multi-scale vessel enhancement (MSVE) algorithm, and image fusion. After execution of the proposed segmentation algorithm, the area-based morphological operator is applied to highlight the blood vessels. To validate the proposed algorithm, the results are compared with the ground truth of the High-Resolution Fundus (HRF) images dataset. Upon comparison, it is inferred that the proposed algorithm segments the blood vessels with more accuracy than the existing algorithms.

Image manipulation is easier than ever, often facilitated using accessible AI-based tools. This poses significant risks when used to disseminate disinformation, false evidence, or fraud, which highlights the need for image forgery detection and localization methods to combat this issue. While some recent detection methods demonstrate good performance, there is still a significant gap to be closed to consistently and accurately detect image manipulations in the wild. This paper aims to enhance forgery detection and localization by combining existing detection methods that complement each other. First, we analyze these methods’ complementarity, with an objective measurement of complementariness, and calculation of a target performance value using a theoretical oracle fusion. Then, we propose a novel fusion method that combines the existing methods’ outputs. The proposed fusion method is trained using a Generative Adversarial Network architecture. Our experiments demonstrate improved detection and localization performance on a variety of datasets. Although our fusion method is hindered by a lack of generalization, this is a common problem in supervised learning, and hence a motivation for future work. In conclusion, this work deepens our understanding of forgery detection methods’ complementariness and how to harmonize them. As such, we contribute to better protection against image manipulations and the battle against disinformation.

Target detection plays a key role in the safe driving of autonomous vehicles. At present, most studies use single sensor to collect obstacle information, but single sensor cannot deal with the complex urban road environment, and the rate of missed detection is high. Therefore, this paper presents a detection fusion system with integrating LiDAR and color camera. Based on the original You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm, the second detection scheme is proposed to improve the YOLO algorithm for dim targets such as non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians. Many image samples are used to train the YOLO algorithm to obtain the relevant parameters and establish the target detection model. Then, the decision level fusion of sensors is introduced to fuse the color image and the depth image to improve the accuracy of the target detection. Finally, the test samples are used to verify the decision level fusion. The results show that the improved YOLO algorithm and decision level fusion have high accuracy of target detection, can meet the need of real-time, and can reduce the rate of missed detection of dim targets such as non-motor vehicles and pedestrians. Thus, the method in this paper, under the premise of considering accuracy and real-time, has better performance and larger application prospect.

This paper presents a novel double weight-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and infrared (IR) sensor fusion method (DW-SIF) for automatic ground target recognition (ATR). IR-based ATR can provide accurate recognition because of its high image resolution but it is affected by the weather conditions. On the other hand, SAR-based ATR shows a low recognition rate due to the noisy low resolution but can provide consistent performance regardless of the weather conditions. The fusion of an active sensor (SAR) and a passive sensor (IR) can lead to upgraded performance. This paper proposes a doubly weighted neural network fusion scheme at the decision level. The first weight ( α ) can measure the offline sensor confidence per target category based on the classification rate for an evaluation set. The second weight ( β ) can measure the online sensor reliability based on the score distribution for a test target image. The LeNet architecture-based deep convolution network (14 layers) is used as an individual classifier. Doubly weighted sensor scores are fused by two types of fusion schemes, such as the sum-based linear fusion scheme ( α β -sum) and neural network-based nonlinear fusion scheme ( α β -NN). The experimental results confirmed the proposed linear fusion method ( α β -sum) to have the best performance among the linear fusion schemes available (SAR-CNN, IR-CNN, α -sum, β -sum, α β -sum, and Bayesian fusion). In addition, the proposed nonlinear fusion method ( α β -NN) showed superior target recognition performance to linear fusion on the OKTAL-SE-based synthetic database.

(1) Background: Minimally invasive sacroiliac joint (SIJ) fusion is the preferred surgical intervention to treat chronically severe pain associated with SIJ degeneration and dysfunction. (2) Methods: This paper details the ten-step surgical procedure associated with the postero-inferior approach using the PsiF™ DNA Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System. (3) Results: The posterior surgical approach with an inferior operative trajectory (postero-inferior) utilizes easily identifiable landmarks to provide the safest, most direct access to the articular joint space for transfixing device placement. Implanting the device through the subchondral bone provides maximum fixation and stabilization of the joint by utilizing an optimal amount of cortical bone–implant interface. Approaching the joint from the inferior trajectory also places the implant perpendicular to the S1 endplate at a “pivot point” near the sacral axis of rotation, which addresses the most significant motion of the joint. (4) Conclusions: Further observational data from real-world clinical use are encouraged to further validate this procedure as the surgical preference for minimally invasive SIJ fusion.

The fusion of the hyperspectral image (HSI) and the multispectral image (MSI) is commonly employed to obtain a high spatial resolution hyperspectral image (HR-HSI); however, existing methods often involve complex feature extraction and optimization steps, resulting in time-consuming fusion processes. Additionally, these methods typically require parameter adjustments for different datasets. Still, reliable references for parameter adjustment are often unavailable in practical scenarios, leading to subpar fusion results compared to simulated scenarios. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a fusion method based on a correlation matrix. Firstly, we assume the existence of a correlation matrix that effectively correlates the spectral and spatial information of HSI and MSI, enabling fast fusion. Subsequently, we derive a correlation matrix that satisfies the given assumption by deducing the generative relationship among HR-HSI, HSI, and MSI. Finally, we optimize the fused result using the Sylvester equation. We tested our proposed method on two simulated datasets and one real dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. Particularly, in terms of fusion time, our method achieves fusion in less than 0.1 seconds in some cases. This method provides a practical and feasible solution for the fusion of hyperspectral and multispectral images, overcoming the challenges of complex fusion processes and parameter adjustment while ensuring a quick fusion process.

The interest of the fusion community in Pd–Ag membranes has grown in the last decades due to the high value of hydrogen permeability and the possibility of continuous operation, making it a promising technology when a gaseous stream of hydrogen isotopes must be recovered and separated from other impurities. This is the case of the Tritium Conditioning System (TCS) of the European fusion power plant demonstrator, called DEMO. This paper presents an experimental and numerical activity aimed at (i) assessing the Pd–Ag permeator performance under TCS-relevant conditions, (ii) validating a numerical tool for scale-up purposes, and (iii) carrying out a preliminary design of a TCS based on Pd–Ag membranes. Experiments were performed by feeding the membrane with a He–H2 gas mixture in a specific feed flow rate ranging from 85.4 to 427.2 mol h−1 m−2. A satisfactory agreement between experiments and simulations was obtained over a wide range of compositions, showing a root mean squared relative error of 2.3%. The experiments also recognized the Pd–Ag permeator as a promising technology for the DEMO TCS under the identified conditions. The scale-up procedure ended with a preliminary sizing of the system, relying on multi-tube permeators with an overall number ranging between 150 and 80 membranes in lengths of 500 and 1000 mm each.

Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) is the preferred method for elective abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. However, the success of this technique depends greatly on the technologies available. Intra-operative imaging is essential but can come with limitations. More complex interventions lead to longer operating times, fluoroscopy times, and greater contrast doses. A number of intra-operative imaging modalities to quality assure the success of EVAR have been developed. A systematic literature search was performed with separate searches conducted for each imaging modality in the study: computed tomography (CT), digital subtraction angiography (DSA), fusion, ultrasound, intra-operative positioning system (IOPS), and non-contrast imaging. CT was effective at detecting complications but commonly resulted in increased radiation and contrast dose. The effectiveness of DSA can be increased, and radiation exposure reduced, through the use of adjunctive technologies. We found that 2D-3D fusion was non-inferior to 3D-3D and led to reduced radiation and contrast dose. Non-contrast imaging occasionally led to higher doses of radiation. Ultrasound was particularly effective in the detection of type II endoleaks with reduced radiation and contrast use but was often operator dependent. Unfortunately, no papers made it past full text screening for IOPS. All of the imaging techniques discussed have advantages and disadvantages, and clinical context is relevant to guide imaging choice. Fusion and ultrasound in particular show promise for the future.

The performance of human gait recognition (HGR) is affected by the partial obstruction of the human body caused by the limited field of view in video surveillance. The traditional method required the bounding box to recognize human gait in the video sequences accurately; however, it is a challenging and time-consuming approach. Due to important applications, such as biometrics and video surveillance, HGR has improved performance over the last half-decade. Based on the literature, the challenging covariant factors that degrade gait recognition performance include walking while wearing a coat or carrying a bag. This paper proposed a new two-stream deep learning framework for human gait recognition. The first step proposed a contrast enhancement technique based on the local and global filters information fusion. The high-boost operation is finally applied to highlight the human region in a video frame. Data augmentation is performed in the second step to increase the dimension of the preprocessed dataset (CASIA-B). In the third step, two pre-trained deep learning models—MobilenetV2 and ShuffleNet—are fine-tuned and trained on the augmented dataset using deep transfer learning. Features are extracted from the global average pooling layer instead of the fully connected layer. In the fourth step, extracted features of both streams are fused using a serial-based approach and further refined in the fifth step by using an improved equilibrium state optimization-controlled Newton–Raphson (ESOcNR) selection method. The selected features are finally classified using machine learning algorithms for the final classification accuracy. The experimental process was conducted on 8 angles of the CASIA-B dataset and obtained an accuracy of 97.3, 98.6, 97.7, 96.5, 92.9, 93.7, 94.7, and 91.2%, respectively. Comparisons were conducted with state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques, and showed improved accuracy and reduced computational time.

A future nuclear fusion plant DEMO needs neutral beam injection (NBI) systems requiring a vacuum pumping system with a very high pumping speed, in the order of several 1000 m3/s. Large customized cryopumps are actually used to meet the requirements. A promising concept for future NBI systems is based on high capacity getter materials. The ZAO® alloy, developed by SAES Getters, Italy, provides a drastically improved performance for the pumping of hydrogen compared to conventional getter materials. This paper describes the experimental characterization of a large pump of scalable size with 15 kg of ZAO® and the achieved results, in particular the systematic investigation of sorption characteristics and regeneration behaviors. Major findings include a very good repeatability of the sorption performance, a reduced pumping speed at higher pressures only above the NBI relevant level, an improved performance (+20%) with elevated getter temperature and an isotope independent sticking coefficient for hydrogen. Furthermore, improved operation experience and regeneration prediction tools have been developed. Employing the experimental results, a simulation task was performed and the sticking factor of the getter cartridge was determined with 7%.

Methods based on 64-beam LiDAR can provide very precise 3D object detection. However, highly accurate LiDAR sensors are extremely costly: a 64-beam model can cost approximately USD 75,000. We previously proposed SLS–Fusion (sparse LiDAR and stereo fusion) to fuse low-cost four-beam LiDAR with stereo cameras that outperform most advanced stereo–LiDAR fusion methods. In this paper, and according to the number of LiDAR beams used, we analyzed how the stereo and LiDAR sensors contributed to the performance of the SLS–Fusion model for 3D object detection. Data coming from the stereo camera play a significant role in the fusion model. However, it is necessary to quantify this contribution and identify the variations in such a contribution with respect to the number of LiDAR beams used inside the model. Thus, to evaluate the roles of the parts of the SLS–Fusion network that represent LiDAR and stereo camera architectures, we propose dividing the model into two independent decoder networks. The results of this study show that—starting from four beams—increasing the number of LiDAR beams has no significant impact on the SLS–Fusion performance. The presented results can guide the design decisions by practitioners.

The aim of fusing hyperspectral and multispectral images is to overcome the limitation of remote sensing hyperspectral sensors by improving their spatial resolutions. This process, also known as hypersharpening, generates an unobserved high-spatial-resolution hyperspectral image. To this end, several hypersharpening methods have been developed, however most of them do not consider the spectral variability phenomenon; therefore, neglecting this phenomenon may cause errors, which leads to reducing the spatial and spectral quality of the sharpened products. Recently, new approaches have been proposed to tackle this problem, particularly those based on spectral unmixing and using parametric models. Nevertheless, the reported methods need a large number of parameters to address spectral variability, which inevitably yields a higher computation time compared to the standard hypersharpening methods. In this paper, a new hypersharpening method addressing spectral variability by considering the spectra bundles-based method, namely the Automated Extraction of Endmember Bundles (AEEB), and the sparsity-based method called Sparse Unmixing by Variable Splitting and Augmented Lagrangian (SUnSAL), is introduced. This new method called Hyperspectral Super-resolution with Spectra Bundles dealing with Spectral Variability (HSB-SV) was tested on both synthetic and real data. Experimental results showed that HSB-SV provides sharpened products with higher spectral and spatial reconstruction fidelities with a very low computational complexity compared to other methods dealing with spectral variability, which are the main contributions of the designed method.

There are a variety of land cover products generated from remote-sensing images. However, misclassification errors in individual products and inconsistency among them undermine their utilities for research and other applications. While it is worth developing advanced pattern classifiers and utilizing the images of finer spatial, temporal, and/or spectral resolution for increased classification accuracy, it is also sensible to increase map classification accuracy through effective map fusion by exploiting complementarity among multi-source products over a study area. This paper presents a novel fusion method that works by weighting multiple source products based on their map-reference cover type transition probabilities, which are predicted using random forest for individual map pixels. The proposed method was tested and compared with three alternatives: consensus-based weighting, random forest, and locally modified Dempster–Shafer evidential reasoning, in a case study, over Shaanxi province, China. For this case study, three types of land cover products (GlobeLand30, FROM-GLC, and GLC_FCS30) of two nominal years (2010 and 2020) were used as the base maps for fusion. Reference sample data for model training and testing were collected following a robust stratified random sampling design that allows for augmenting reference data flexibly. Accuracy assessments show that overall accuracies (OAs) of fused land cover maps have been improved (1~9% in OAs), with the proposed method outperforming other methods by 2~8% in OAs. The proposed method does not need to have the base products’ classification systems harmonized beforehand, thus being robust and highly recommendable for fusing land cover products.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an imaging modality that can estimate a visualization of the conductivity distribution inside the human body. However, the spatial resolution of EIT is limited because measurements are sensitive to noise. We investigate a technique to incorporate a priori information into the EIT reconstructions of the D-Bar algorithm. Our paper aims to help engineers understand the behavior of the D-Bar algorithm and its implementation. The a priori information is provided by a radar setup and a one-dimensional reconstruction of the radar data. The EIT reconstruction is carried out with a D-Bar algorithm. An intermediate step in the D-Bar algorithm is the scattering transform. The a priori information is added in this exact step to increase the spatial resolution of the reconstruction. As the D-Bar algorithm is widely used in the mathematical community and thus far has limited usage in the engineering domain, we also aim to explain the implementation of the algorithm and give an intuitive understanding where possible. Different parameters of the reconstruction algorithm are analyzed systematically with the help of the GREIT figures of merit. Even a limited one-dimensional a priori information can increase the reconstruction quality considerably. Artifacts from noisy EIT measurements are reduced. However, the selection of the amount of a priori information and the estimation of its value can worsen the reconstruction results again.

Localizing the audio-visual events in video requires a combined judgment of visual and audio components. To integrate multimodal information, existing methods modeled the cross-modal relationships by feeding unimodal features into attention modules. However, these unimodal features are encoded in separate spaces, resulting in a large heterogeneity gap between modalities. Existing attention modules, on the other hand, ignore the temporal asynchrony between vision and hearing when constructing cross-modal connections, which may lead to the misinterpretation of one modality by another. Therefore, this paper aims to improve event localization performance by addressing these two problems and proposes a framework that feeds audio and visual features encoded in the same semantic space into a temporally adaptive attention module. Specifically, we develop a self-supervised representation method to encode features with a smaller heterogeneity gap by matching corresponding semantic cues between synchronized audio and visual signals. Furthermore, we develop a temporally adaptive cross-modal attention based on a weighting method that dynamically channels attention according to the time differences between event-related features. The proposed framework achieves state-of-the-art performance on the public audio-visual event dataset and the experimental results not only show that our self-supervised method can learn more discriminative features but also verify the effectiveness of our strategy for assigning attention.

In the studies of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), jointly analyzing imaging data and genetic data provides an effective method to explore the potential biomarkers of AD. AD can be separated into healthy controls (HC), early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI) and AD. In the meantime, identifying the important biomarkers of AD progression, and analyzing these biomarkers in AD provide valuable insights into understanding the mechanism of AD. In this paper, we present a novel data fusion method and a genetic weighted random forest method to mine important features. Specifically, we amplify the difference among AD, LMCI, EMCI and HC by introducing eigenvalues calculated from the gene p-value matrix for feature fusion. Furthermore, we construct the genetic weighted random forest using the resulting fused features. Genetic evolution is used to increase the diversity among decision trees and the decision trees generated are weighted by weights. After training, the genetic weighted random forest is analyzed further to detect the significant fused features. The validation experiments highlight the performance and generalization of our proposed model. We analyze the biological significance of the results and identify some significant genes (CSMD1, CDH13, PTPRD, MACROD2 and WWOX). Furthermore, the calcium signaling pathway, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and the glutamatergic synapse pathway were identified. The investigational findings demonstrate that our proposed model presents an accurate and efficient approach to identifying significant biomarkers in AD.

Background and Objective: In 2019, a corona virus disease (COVID-19) was detected in China that affected millions of people around the world. On 11 March 2020, the WHO declared this disease a pandemic. Currently, more than 200 countries in the world have been affected by this disease. The manual diagnosis of this disease using chest X-ray (CXR) images and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is time consuming and always requires an expert person; therefore, researchers introduced several computerized techniques using computer vision methods. The recent computerized techniques face some challenges, such as low contrast CTX images, the manual initialization of hyperparameters, and redundant features that mislead the classification accuracy. Methods: In this paper, we proposed a novel framework for COVID-19 classification using deep Bayesian optimization and improved canonical correlation analysis (ICCA). In this proposed framework, we initially performed data augmentation for better training of the selected deep models. After that, two pre-trained deep models were employed (ResNet50 and InceptionV3) and trained using transfer learning. The hyperparameters of both models were initialized through Bayesian optimization. Both trained models were utilized for feature extractions and fused using an ICCA-based approach. The fused features were further optimized using an improved tree growth optimization algorithm that finally was classified using a neural network classifier. Results: The experimental process was conducted on five publically available datasets and achieved an accuracy of 99.6, 98.5, 99.9, 99.5, and 100%. Conclusion: The comparison with recent methods and t-test-based analysis showed the significance of this proposed framework.

Smoke is an early visual phenomenon of forest fires, and the timely detection of smoke is of great significance for early warning systems. However, most existing smoke detection algorithms have varying levels of accuracy over different distances. This paper proposes a new smoke root detection algorithm that integrates the static and dynamic features of smoke and detects the final smoke root based on clustering and the circumcircle. Compared with the existing methods, the newly developed method has a higher accuracy and detection efficiency on the full scale, indicating that the method has a wider range of applications in the quicker detection of smoke in forests and the prevention of potential forest fire spread.
