To explore whether the brain contains pattern differences in the rock–paper–scissors (RPS) imagery task, this paper attempts to classify this task using fNIRS and deep learning. In this study, we designed an RPS task with a total duration of 25 min and 40 s, and recruited 22 volunteers for the experiment. We used the fNIRS acquisition device (FOIRE-3000) to record the cerebral neural activities of these participants in the RPS task. The time series classification (TSC) algorithm was introduced into the time-domain fNIRS signal classification. Experiments show that CNN-based TSC methods can achieve 97% accuracy in RPS classification. CNN-based TSC method is suitable for the classification of fNIRS signals in RPS motor imagery tasks, and may find new application directions for the development of brain–computer interfaces (BCI).

Accurate and reliable PV power probabilistic-forecasting results can help grid operators and market participants better understand and cope with PV energy volatility and uncertainty and improve the efficiency of energy dispatch and operation, which plays an important role in application scenarios such as power market trading, risk management, and grid scheduling. In this paper, an innovative deep learning quantile regression ultra-short-term PV power-forecasting method is proposed. This method employs a two-branch deep learning architecture to forecast the conditional quantile of PV power; one branch is a QR-based stacked conventional convolutional neural network (QR_CNN), and the other is a QR-based temporal convolutional network (QR_TCN). The stacked CNN is used to focus on learning short-term local dependencies in PV power sequences, and the TCN is used to learn long-term temporal constraints between multi-feature data. These two branches extract different features from input data with different prior knowledge. By jointly training the two branches, the model is able to learn the probability distribution of PV power and obtain discrete conditional quantile forecasts of PV power in the ultra-short term. Then, based on these conditional quantile forecasts, a kernel density estimation method is used to estimate the PV power probability density function. The proposed method innovatively employs two ways of a priori knowledge injection: constructing a differential sequence of historical power as an input feature to provide more information about the ultrashort-term dynamics of the PV power and, at the same time, dividing it, together with all the other features, into two sets of inputs that contain different a priori features according to the demand of the forecasting task; and the dual-branching model architecture is designed to deeply match the data of the two sets of input features to the corresponding branching model computational mechanisms. The two a priori knowledge injection methods provide more effective features for the model and improve the forecasting performance and understandability of the model. The performance of the proposed model in point forecasting, interval forecasting, and probabilistic forecasting is comprehensively evaluated through the case of a real PV plant. The experimental results show that the proposed model performs well on the task of ultra-short-term PV power probabilistic forecasting and outperforms other state-of-the-art deep learning models in the field combined with QR. The proposed method in this paper can provide technical support for application scenarios such as energy scheduling, market trading, and risk management on the ultra-short-term time scale of the power system.

The rapid advancement of autonomous vehicle technology has brought into focus the critical need for enhanced road safety systems, particularly in the areas of road damage detection and surface classification. This paper explores these two essential components, highlighting their importance in autonomous driving. In the domain of road damage detection, this study explores a range of deep learning methods, particularly focusing on one-stage and two-stage detectors. These methodologies, including notable ones like YOLO and SSD for one-stage detection and Faster R-CNN for two-stage detection, are critically analyzed for their efficacy in identifying various road damages under diverse conditions. The review provides insights into their comparative advantages, balancing between real-time processing and accuracy in damage localization. For road surface classification, the paper investigates the classification techniques based on both environmental conditions and material road composition. It highlights the role of different convolutional neural network architectures and innovations at the neural level in enhancing classification accuracy under varying road and weather conditions. The main finding of this work is that it offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art, showcasing significant strides in utilizing deep learning for road analysis in autonomous vehicle systems. The study concludes by underscoring the importance of continued research in these areas to further refine and improve the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving.

With the increasing number of households owning pets, the importance of sensor data for recognizing pet behavior has grown significantly. However, challenges arise due to the costs and reliability issues associated with data collection. This paper proposes a method for classifying pet behavior using cleaned meta pseudo labels to overcome these issues. The data for this study were collected using wearable devices equipped with accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers, and pet behaviors were classified into five categories. Utilizing this data, we analyzed the impact of the quantity of labeled data on accuracy and further enhanced the learning process by integrating an additional Distance Loss. This method effectively improves the learning process by removing noise from unlabeled data. Experimental results demonstrated that while the conventional supervised learning method achieved an accuracy of 82.9%, the existing meta pseudo labels method showed an accuracy of 86.2%, and the cleaned meta pseudo labels method proposed in this study surpassed these with an accuracy of 88.3%. These results hold significant implications for the development of pet monitoring systems, and the approach of this paper provides an effective solution for recognizing and classifying pet behavior in environments with insufficient labels.

Delamination represents one of the most significant and dangerous damages in composite plates. Recently, many papers have presented the capability of structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for the investigation of structural delamination with various shapes and thickness depths. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the utilization of convolutional neural network (CNN) methods for automating the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques database to identify the delamination size and depth. In this paper, an automated system qualified for distinguishing between pristine and damaged structures and classifying three classes of delamination with various depths is presented. This system includes a proposed CNN model and the Lamb wave technique. In this work, a unidirectional composite plate with three samples of delamination inserted at different depths was prepared for numerical and experimental investigations. In the numerical part, the guided wave propagation and interaction with three samples of delamination were studied to observe how the delamination depth can affect the scattered and trapped waves over the delamination region. This numerical study was validated experimentally using an efficient ultrasonic guided waves technique. This technique involved piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) and a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). Both numerical and experimental studies demonstrate that the delamination depth has a direct effect on the trapped waves’ energy and distribution. Three different datasets were collected from the numerical and experimental studies, involving the numerical wavefield image dataset, experimental wavefield image dataset, and experimental wavenumber spectrum image dataset. These three datasets were used independently with the proposed CNN model to develop a system that can automatically classify four classes (pristine class and three different delamination classes). The results of all three datasets show the capability of the proposed CNN model for predicting the delamination depth with high accuracy. The proposed CNN model results of the three different datasets were validated using the GoogLeNet CNN. The results of both methods show an excellent agreement. The results proved the capability of the wavefield image and wavenumber spectrum datasets to be used as input data to the CNN for the detection of delamination depth.

This paper addresses the persistent threat of botnet attacks on IoT devices, emphasizing their continued existence despite various conventional and deep learning methodologies developed for intrusion detection. Utilizing the Bot-IoT dataset, we propose a hierarchical CNN (HCNN) approach featuring three levels of classification. The HCNN approach, presented in this paper, consists of two networks: the non-hierarchical and the hierarchical network. The hierarchical network works by combining features obtained at a higher level with those of its descender. This combined information is subsequently fed into the following level to extract features for the descendant nodes. The overall network consists of 1790 parameters, with the hierarchical network introducing an additional 942 parameters to the existing backbone. The classification levels comprise a binary classification of normal vs attack in the first level, followed by 5 classes in the second level, and 11 classes in the third level. To assess the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we evaluate performance metrics such as Precision (P), Recall (R), F1 Score (F1), and Accuracy (Acc). Rigorous experiments are conducted to compare the performance of both the hierarchical and non-hierarchical models and existing state-of-the-art approaches, providing valuable insights into the efficiency of our proposed hierarchical CNN approach for addressing botnet attacks on IoT devices.

In recent years, with the rapid development of deep learning technology, a large number of excellent convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been proposed, many of which are based on improvements to classical methods. Based on the Inception family of methods, depthwise separable convolution was applied to Xception to achieve lightweighting, and Inception-ResNet introduces residual connections to accelerate model convergence. However, existing improvements for the Inception module often neglect further enhancement of its receptive field, while increasing the receptive field of CNNs has been widely studied and proven to be effective in improving classification performance. Motivated by this fact, three effective expansion modules are proposed in this paper. The first expansion module, Inception expand (Inception-e) module, is proposed to improve the classification accuracy by concatenating more and deeper convolutional branches. To reduce the number of parameters for Inception e, this paper proposes a second expansion module—Equivalent Inception-e (Eception) module, which is equivalent to Inception-e in terms of feature extraction capability, but which suppresses the growth of the parameter quantity brought by the expansion by effectively reducing the redundant convolutional layers; on the basis of Eception, this paper proposes a third expansion module—Lightweight Eception (Lception) module, which crosses depthwise convolution with ordinary convolution to further effectively reduce the number of parameters. The three proposed modules have been validated on the Cifar10 dataset. The experimental results show that all these extensions are effective in improving the classification accuracy of the models, and the most significant effect is the Lception module, where Lception (rank = 4) on the Cifar10 dataset improves the accuracy by 1.5% compared to the baseline model (Inception module A) by using only 0.15 M more parameters.

This paper focus on direct current (DC) filter grounding faults to propose a novel dilated normalized residual convolutional neural network (DRNCNN) fault diagnosis model for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. To address the insufficiency of the traditional model’s receptive field in dealing with high-dimensional and nonlinear data, this paper incorporates dilated convolution and batch normalization (BN), significantly enhancing the CNN’s capability to capture complex spatial features. Furthermore, this paper integrates residual connections and parameter rectified linear units (PReLU) to optimize gradient propagation and mitigate the issue of gradient vanishing during training. These innovative improvements, embodied in the DRNCNN model, substantially increase the accuracy of fault detection, achieving a diagnostic accuracy rate of 99.28%.

Deep learning technology has made significant progress in agricultural image recognition tasks, but the parameter adjustment of deep models usually requires a lot of manual intervention, which is time-consuming and inefficient. To solve this challenge, this paper proposes an adaptive parameter tuning strategy that combines sine–cosine algorithm with Tent chaotic mapping to enhance sea horse optimization, which improves the search ability and convergence stability of standard sea horse optimization algorithm (SHO). Through adaptive optimization, this paper determines the best parameter configuration in ResNet-50 neural network and optimizes the model performance. The improved ESHO algorithm shows superior optimization effects than other algorithms in various performance indicators. The improved model achieves 96.7% accuracy in the corn disease image recognition task, and 96.4% accuracy in the jade fungus image recognition task. These results show that ESHO can not only effectively improve the accuracy of agricultural image recognition, but also reduce the need for manual parameter adjustment.

The main purpose of this paper is to provide information on how to create a convolutional neural network (CNN) for extracting features from EEG signals. Our task was to understand the primary aspects of creating and fine-tuning CNNs for various application scenarios. We considered the characteristics of EEG signals, coupled with an exploration of various signal processing and data preparation techniques. These techniques include noise reduction, filtering, encoding, decoding, and dimension reduction, among others. In addition, we conduct an in-depth analysis of well-known CNN architectures, categorizing them into four distinct groups: standard implementation, recurrent convolutional, decoder architecture, and combined architecture. This paper further offers a comprehensive evaluation of these architectures, covering accuracy metrics, hyperparameters, and an appendix that contains a table outlining the parameters of commonly used CNN architectures for feature extraction from EEG signals.

The aim of this article is to review the single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) segmentation methods used in patient-specific dosimetry of 177Lu molecular therapy. Notably, 177Lu-labelled radiopharmaceuticals are currently used in molecular therapy of metastatic neuroendocrine tumours (ligands for somatostatin receptors) and metastatic prostate adenocarcinomas (PSMA ligands). The proper segmentation of the organs at risk and tumours in targeted radionuclide therapy is an important part of the optimisation process of internal patient dosimetry in this kind of therapy. Because this is the first step in dosimetry assessments, on which further dose calculations are based, it is important to know the level of uncertainty that is associated with this part of the analysis. However, the robust quantification of SPECT images, which would ensure accurate dosimetry assessments, is very hard to achieve due to the intrinsic features of this device. In this article, papers on this topic were collected and reviewed to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of the segmentation methods used in clinical practice. Degrading factors of SPECT images were also studied to assess their impact on the quantification of 177Lu therapy images. Our review of the recent literature gives an insight into this important topic. However, based on the PubMed and IEEE databases, only a few papers investigating segmentation methods in 177Lumolecular therapy were found. Although segmentation is an important step in internal dose calculations, this subject has been relatively lightly investigated for SPECT systems. This is mostly due to the inner features of SPECT. What is more, even when studies are conducted, they usually utilise the diagnostic radionuclide 99mTc and not a therapeutic one like 177Lu, which could be of concern regarding SPECT camera performance and its overall outcome on dosimetry.

In response to the rapid advancements in facial manipulation technologies, particularly facilitated by Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Stable Diffusion-based methods, this paper explores the critical issue of deepfake content creation. The increasing accessibility of these tools necessitates robust detection methods to curb potential misuse. In this context, this paper investigates the potential of Vision Transformers (ViTs) for effective deepfake image detection, leveraging their capacity to extract global features. Objective: The primary goal of this study is to assess the viability of ViTs in detecting multiclass deepfake images compared to traditional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based models. By framing the deepfake problem as a multiclass task, this research introduces a novel approach, considering the challenges posed by Stable Diffusion and StyleGAN2. The objective is to enhance understanding and efficacy in detecting manipulated content within a multiclass context. Novelty: This research distinguishes itself by approaching the deepfake detection problem as a multiclass task, introducing new challenges associated with Stable Diffusion and StyleGAN2. The study pioneers the exploration of ViTs in this domain, emphasizing their potential to extract global features for enhanced detection accuracy. The novelty lies in addressing the evolving landscape of deepfake creation and manipulation. Results and Conclusion: Through extensive experiments, the proposed method exhibits high effectiveness, achieving impressive detection accuracy, precision, and recall, and an F1 rate of 99.90% on a multiclass-prepared dataset. The results underscore the significant potential of ViTs in contributing to a more secure digital landscape by robustly addressing the challenges posed by deepfake content, particularly in the presence of Stable Diffusion and StyleGAN2. The proposed model outperformed when compared with state-of-the-art CNN-based models, i.e., ResNet-50 and VGG-16.

In this paper, research was conducted on anomaly detection of wheel flats. In the railway sector, conducting tests with actual railway vehicles is challenging due to safety concerns for passengers and maintenance issues as it is a public industry. Therefore, dynamics software was utilized. Next, STFT (short-time Fourier transform) was performed to create spectrogram images. In the case of railway vehicles, control, monitoring, and communication are performed through TCMS, but complex analysis and data processing are difficult because there are no devices such as GPUs. Furthermore, there are memory limitations. Therefore, in this paper, the relatively lightweight models LeNet-5, ResNet-20, and MobileNet-V3 were selected for deep learning experiments. At this time, the LeNet-5 and MobileNet-V3 models were modified from the basic architecture. Since railway vehicles are given preventive maintenance, it is difficult to obtain fault data. Therefore, semi-supervised learning was also performed. At this time, the Deep One Class Classification paper was referenced. The evaluation results indicated that the modified LeNet-5 and MobileNet-V3 models achieved approximately 97% and 96% accuracy, respectively. At this point, the LeNet-5 model showed a training time of 12 min faster than the MobileNet-V3 model. In addition, the semi-supervised learning results showed a significant outcome of approximately 94% accuracy when considering the railway maintenance environment. In conclusion, considering the railway vehicle maintenance environment and device specifications, it was inferred that the relatively simple and lightweight LeNet-5 model can be effectively utilized while using small images.

Negative emotions of drivers may lead to some dangerous driving behaviors, which in turn lead to serious traffic accidents. However, most of the current studies on driver emotions use a single modality, such as EEG, eye trackers, and driving data. In complex situations, a single modality may not be able to fully consider a driver’s complete emotional characteristics and provides poor robustness. In recent years, some studies have used multimodal thinking to monitor single emotions such as driver fatigue and anger, but in actual driving environments, negative emotions such as sadness, anger, fear, and fatigue all have a significant impact on driving safety. However, there are very few research cases using multimodal data to accurately predict drivers’ comprehensive emotions. Therefore, based on the multi-modal idea, this paper aims to improve drivers’ comprehensive emotion recognition. By combining the three modalities of a driver’s voice, facial image, and video sequence, the six classification tasks of drivers’ emotions are performed as follows: sadness, anger, fear, fatigue, happiness, and emotional neutrality. In order to accurately identify drivers’ negative emotions to improve driving safety, this paper proposes a multi-modal fusion framework based on the CNN + Bi-LSTM + HAM to identify driver emotions. The framework fuses feature vectors of driver audio, facial expressions, and video sequences for comprehensive driver emotion recognition. Experiments have proved the effectiveness of the multi-modal data proposed in this paper for driver emotion recognition, and its recognition accuracy has reached 85.52%. At the same time, the validity of this method is verified by comparing experiments and evaluation indicators such as accuracy and F1 score.

Mineral particle size is an important parameter in the mineral beneficiation process. In industrial processes, the grinding process produces pulp with qualified particle size for subsequent flotation processes. In this paper, a hierarchical intelligent control method for mineral particle size based on machine learning is proposed. In the machine learning layer, artificial intelligence technologies such as long and short memory neural networks (LSTM) and convolution neural networks (CNN) are used to solve the multi-source ore blending prediction and intelligent classification of dry and rainy season conditions, and then the ore-feeding intelligent expert control system and grinding process intelligent expert system are used to coordinate the production of semi-autogenous mill and Ball mill and Hydrocyclone (SAB) process and intelligently adjust the control parameters of DCS layer. This paper presents the practical application of the method in the SAB production process of an international mine to realize automation and intelligence. The process throughput is increased by 6.05%, the power consumption is reduced by 7.25%, and the annual economic benefit has been significantly improved.

As the penetration of renewable energy sources into a power system increases, the significance of precise short-term forecasts for wind power generation becomes paramount. However, the erratic and non-periodic nature of wind poses challenges in accurately predicting the output. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation into forecasting wind power generation for the following day, using three machine learning models: long short-term memory (LSTM), convolutional neural network-bidirectional LSTM (CNN-biLSTM), and light gradient boosting machine (LGBM). In addition, this paper proposes a method to improve the prediction performance of LGBM by separating data according to the distribution of features, and training and testing each separated dataset with a distinct model. This study includes a comparative analysis of the performance of the proposed models in predicting wind turbine output, offering valuable insights into their respective efficiencies. The results of this investigation were analyzed for two geographically distinct wind farms (Korea and the UK). The findings of this study are expected to facilitate the selection of efficient prediction models within the forecast accuracy auxiliary service market and assist grid operators in ensuring reliable power supply for the grid.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a cornerstone of modern technology, revolutionizing industries from healthcare to finance. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are a subset of AI that have emerged as a powerful tool for various tasks including image recognition, speech recognition, natural language processing (NLP), and even in the field of genomics, where they have been utilized to classify DNA sequences. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of CNNs and their applications in image recognition tasks. It first introduces the fundamentals of CNNs, including the layers of CNNs, convolution operation (Conv_Op), Feat_Maps, activation functions (Activ_Func), and training methods. It then discusses several popular CNN architectures such as LeNet, AlexNet, VGG, ResNet, and InceptionNet, and compares their performance. It also examines when to use CNNs, their advantages and limitations, and provides recommendations for developers and data scientists, including preprocessing the data, choosing appropriate hyperparameters (Hyper_Param), and evaluating model performance. It further explores the existing platforms and libraries for CNNs such as TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Caffe, and MXNet, and compares their features and functionalities. Moreover, it estimates the cost of using CNNs and discusses potential cost-saving strategies. Finally, it reviews recent developments in CNNs, including attention mechanisms, capsule networks, transfer learning, adversarial training, quantization and compression, and enhancing the reliability and efficiency of CNNs through formal methods. The paper is concluded by summarizing the key takeaways and discussing the future directions of CNN research and development.

This paper focuses on the problems of omission, misclassification, and inter-adhesion due to overly dense distribution, intraclass diversity, and interclass variability when extracting winter wheat (WW) from high-resolution images. This paper proposes a deep supervised network RAunet model with multi-scale features that incorporates a dual-attention mechanism with an improved U-Net backbone network. The model mainly consists of a pyramid input layer, a modified U-Net backbone network, and a side output layer. Firstly, the pyramid input layer is used to fuse the feature information of winter wheat at different scales by constructing multiple input paths. Secondly, the Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) residual module and the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) dual-attention mechanism are added to the U-Net model to form the backbone network of the model, which enhances the feature extraction ability of the model for winter wheat information. Finally, the side output layer consists of multiple classifiers to supervise the results of different scale outputs. Using the RAunet model to extract the spatial distribution information of WW from GF-2 imagery, the experimental results showed that the mIou of the recognition results reached 92.48%, an improvement of 2.66%, 4.15%, 1.42%, 2.35%, 3.76%, and 0.47% compared to FCN, U-Net, DeepLabv3, SegNet, ResUNet, and UNet++, respectively. The superiority of the RAunet model in high-resolution images for WW extraction was verified in effectively improving the accuracy of the spatial distribution information extraction of WW.

Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in image denoising, and their performance has been enhanced through residual learning. However, previous research mostly focused on optimizing the network architecture of CNNs, ignoring the limitations of the commonly used residual learning. This paper identifies two of its limitations, which are the neglect of image information and the lack of effective consideration of image self-similarity. To solve these limitations, this paper proposes a compositional denoising network (CDN), which contains two sub-paths, the image information path (IIP) and the noise estimation path (NEP), respectively. IIP is trained via an image-to-image method to extract image information. For NEP, it utilizes image self-similarity from the perspective of training. This similarity-based training method constrains NEP to output similar estimated noise distributions for different image patches with a specific kind of noise. Finally, image information and noise distribution information are comprehensively considered for image denoising. Experimental results indicate that CDN outperforms other CNN-based methods in both synthetic and real-world image denoising, achieving state-of-the-art performance.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being integrated into the domain of precision agriculture, revolutionizing the agricultural landscape. Specifically, UAVs are being used in conjunction with machine learning techniques to solve a variety of complex agricultural problems. This paper provides a careful survey of more than 70 studies that have applied machine learning techniques utilizing UAV imagery to solve agricultural problems. The survey examines the models employed, their applications, and their performance, spanning a wide range of agricultural tasks, including crop classification, crop and weed detection, cropland mapping, and field segmentation. Comparisons are made among supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised machine learning approaches, including traditional machine learning classifiers, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), single-stage detectors, two-stage detectors, and transformers. Lastly, future advancements and prospects for UAV utilization in precision agriculture are highlighted and discussed. The general findings of the paper demonstrate that, for simple classification problems, traditional machine learning techniques, CNNs, and transformers can be used, with CNNs being the optimal choice. For segmentation tasks, UNETs are by far the preferred approach. For detection tasks, two-stage detectors delivered the best performance. On the other hand, for dataset augmentation and enhancement, generative adversarial networks (GANs) were the most popular choice.

Power load forecasting plays an important role in power systems, and the accuracy of load forecasting is of vital importance to power system planning as well as economic efficiency. Power load data are nonsmooth, nonlinear time-series and “noisy” data. Traditional load forecasting has low accuracy and curves not fitting the load variation. It is not well predicted by a single forecasting model. In this paper, we propose a novel model based on the combination of data mining and deep learning to improve the prediction accuracy. First, data preprocessing is performed. Second, identification and correction of anomalous data, normalization of continuous sequences, and one-hot encoding of discrete sequences are performed. The load data are decomposed and denoised using the double decomposition modal (LVMD) strategy, the load curves are clustered using the double weighted fuzzy C-means (DBFCM) algorithm, and the typical curves obtained are used as load patterns. In addition, data feature analysis is performed. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to extract data features. A bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) network is used for prediction, in which the number of hidden layer neurons, the number of training epochs, the learning rate, the regularization coefficient, and other relevant parameters in the BLSTM network are optimized using the influenza virus immunity optimization algorithm (IVIA). Finally, the historical data of City H from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018, are used for load forecasting. The experimental results show that the novel model based on LVMD-DBFCM load c1urve clustering combined with CNN-IVIA-BLSTM proposed in this paper has an error of only 2% for electric load forecasting.

Sea surface temperature (SST) is crucial in ocean research and marine activities. It makes predicting SST of paramount importance. While SST is highly affected by different oceanic, atmospheric, and climatic parameters, few papers have investigated time-series SST prediction based on multiple features. This paper utilized multi features of air pressure, water temperature, wind direction, and wind speed for time-series hourly SST prediction using deep neural networks of convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and CNN–LSTM. Models were trained and validated by different epochs, and feature importance was evaluated by the leave-one-feature-out method. Air pressure and water temperature were significantly more important than wind direction and wind speed. Accordingly, feature selection is an essential step for time-series SST prediction. Findings also revealed that all models performed well with low prediction errors, and increasing the epochs did not necessarily improve the modeling. While all models were similarly practical, CNN was considered the most suitable as its training speed was several times faster than the other two models. With all this, the low variance of time-series data helped models make accurate predictions, and the proposed method may have higher errors while working with more variant features.

In the era of the first Industrial Revolution, many buildings were built with red bricks, and the heritage buildings built at that time are more than 100 years old. In these old heritage buildings, damage is bound to occur due to chemical and physical effects. Technologies such as automatic damage detection can effectively manage damage, but they can be affected by other categories present in heritage buildings. Therefore, this paper proposes a CNN algorithm that can automatically detect cracks and damage that occur in heritage buildings, as well as multi-label classification, such as doors, windows, arches, artwork, brick walls, stonewalls, and vents. A total of 2400 thermal infrared images are collected for 8 categories and automatic classification was performed using the CNN algorithm. The average precision and average sensitivity for the eight categories of heritage buildings are 97.72% and 97.43%, respectively. This paper defines the causes of misclassification as the following two causes: misclassification by multiple objects and misclassification by the perception of the CNN algorithm.

Tool wear condition monitoring is an important component of mechanical processing automation, and accurately identifying the wear status of tools can improve processing quality and production efficiency. This paper studied a new deep learning model, to identify the wear status of tools. The force signal was transformed into a two-dimensional image using continuous wavelet transform (CWT), short-time Fourier transform (STFT), and Gramian angular summation field (GASF) methods. The generated images were then fed into the proposed convolutional neural network (CNN) model for further analysis. The calculation results show that the accuracy of tool wear state recognition proposed in this paper was above 90%, which was higher than the accuracy of AlexNet, ResNet, and other models. The accuracy of the images generated using the CWT method and identified with the CNN model was the highest, which is attributed to the fact that the CWT method can extract local features of an image and is less affected by noise. Comparing the precision and recall values of the model, it was verified that the image obtained by the CWT method had the highest accuracy in identifying tool wear state. These results demonstrate the potential advantages of using a force signal transformed into a two-dimensional image for tool wear state recognition and of applying CNN models in this area. They also indicate the wide application prospects of this method in industrial production.

Detecting and classifying vehicles as objects from images and videos is challenging in appearance-based representation, yet plays a significant role in the substantial real-time applications of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). The rapid development of Deep Learning (DL) has resulted in the computer-vision community demanding efficient, robust, and outstanding services to be built in various fields. This paper covers a wide range of vehicle detection and classification approaches and the application of these in estimating traffic density, real-time targets, toll management and other areas using DL architectures. Moreover, the paper also presents a detailed analysis of DL techniques, benchmark datasets, and preliminaries. A survey of some vital detection and classification applications, namely, vehicle detection and classification and performance, is conducted, with a detailed investigation of the challenges faced. The paper also addresses the promising technological advancements of the last few years.

Lung auscultation has long been used as a valuable medical tool to assess respiratory health and has gotten a lot of attention in recent years, notably following the coronavirus epidemic. Lung auscultation is used to assess a patient’s respiratory role. Modern technological progress has guided the growth of computer-based respiratory speech investigation, a valuable tool for detecting lung abnormalities and diseases. Several recent studies have reviewed this important area, but none are specific to lung sound-based analysis with deep-learning architectures from one side and the provided information was not sufficient for a good understanding of these techniques. This paper gives a complete review of prior deep-learning-based architecture lung sound analysis. Deep-learning-based respiratory sound analysis articles are found in different databases including the Plos, ACM Digital Libraries, Elsevier, PubMed, MDPI, Springer, and IEEE. More than 160 publications were extracted and submitted for assessment. This paper discusses different trends in pathology/lung sound, the common features for classifying lung sounds, several considered datasets, classification methods, signal processing techniques, and some statistical information based on previous study findings. Finally, the assessment concludes with a discussion of potential future improvements and recommendations.

With the increasing popularity of deep learning, enterprises are replacing traditional inefficient and non-robust defect detection methods with intelligent recognition technology. This paper utilizes TL (transfer learning) to enhance the model’s recognition performance by integrating the Adam optimizer and a learning rate decay strategy. By comparing the TL-ResNet50 model with other classic CNN models (ResNet50, VGG19, and AlexNet), the superiority of the model used in this paper was fully demonstrated. To address the current lack of understanding regarding the internal mechanisms of CNN models, we employed an interpretable algorithm to analyze pre-trained models and visualize the learned semantic features of defects across various models. This further confirms the efficacy and reliability of CNN models in accurately recognizing different types of defects. Results showed that the TL-ResNet50 model achieved an overall accuracy of 99.4% on the testing set and demonstrated good identification ability for defect features.

Knee osteoarthritis is a challenging problem affecting many adults around the world. There are currently no medications that cure knee osteoarthritis. The only way to control the progression of knee osteoarthritis is early detection. Currently, X-ray imaging is a central technique used for the prediction of osteoarthritis. However, the manual X-ray technique is prone to errors due to the lack of expertise of radiologists. Recent studies have described the use of automated systems based on machine learning for the effective prediction of osteoarthritis from X-ray images. However, most of these techniques still need to achieve higher predictive accuracy to detect osteoarthritis at an early stage. This paper suggests a method with higher predictive accuracy that can be employed in the real world for the early detection of knee osteoarthritis. In this paper, we suggest the use of transfer learning models based on sequential convolutional neural networks (CNNs), Visual Geometry Group 16 (VGG-16), and Residual Neural Network 50 (ResNet-50) for the early detection of osteoarthritis from knee X-ray images. In our analysis, we found that all the suggested models achieved a higher level of predictive accuracy, greater than 90%, in detecting osteoarthritis. However, the best-performing model was the pretrained VGG-16 model, which achieved a training accuracy of 99% and a testing accuracy of 92%.

This paper presents a novel low-cost integrated system prototype, called School Violence Detection system (SVD), based on a 2D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). It is used for classifying and identifying automatically violent actions in educational environments based on shallow cost hardware. Moreover, the paper fills the gap of real datasets in educational environments by proposing a new one, called Daily School Break dataset (DSB), containing original videos recorded in an Italian high school yard. The proposed CNN has been pre-trained with an ImageNet model and a transfer learning approach. To extend its capabilities, the DSB was enriched with online images representing students in school environments. Experimental results analyze the classification performances of the SVD and investigate how it performs through the proposed DSB dataset. The SVD, which achieves a recognition accuracy of 95%, is considered computably efficient and low-cost. It could be adapted to other scenarios such as school arenas, gyms, playgrounds, etc.

The value of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for use in heritage research is increasingly appreciated. In specific areas, notably remote sensing, datasets have increased in extent and resolution to the point that manual interpretation is problematic and the availability of skilled interpreters to undertake such work is limited. Interpretation of the geophysical datasets associated with prehistoric submerged landscapes is particularly challenging. Following the Last Glacial Maximum, sea levels rose by 120 m globally, and vast, habitable landscapes were lost to the sea. These landscapes were inaccessible until extensive remote sensing datasets were provided by the offshore energy sector. In this paper, we provide the results of a research programme centred on AI applications using data from the southern North Sea. Here, an area of c. 188,000 km2 of habitable terrestrial land was inundated between c. 20,000 BP and 7000 BP, along with the cultural heritage it contained. As part of this project, machine learning tools were applied to detect and interpret features with potential archaeological significance from shallow seismic data. The output provides a proof-of-concept model demonstrating verifiable results and the potential for a further, more complex, leveraging of AI interpretation for the study of submarine palaeolandscapes.

This paper addresses the classification of images depicting the eruptive activity of Mount Etna, captured by a network of ground-based thermal cameras. The proposed approach utilizes Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), focusing on pretrained models. Eight popular pretrained neural networks underwent systematic evaluation, revealing their effectiveness in addressing the classification problem. The experimental results demonstrated that, following a retraining phase with a limited dataset, specific networks such as VGG-16 and AlexNet, achieved an impressive total accuracy of approximately 90%. Notably, VGG-16 and AlexNet emerged as practical choices, exhibiting individual class accuracies exceeding 90%. The case study emphasized the pivotal role of transfer learning, as attempts to solve the classification problem without pretrained networks resulted in unsatisfactory outcomes.

Social media has evolved into a platform for the dissemination of information, including fake news. There is a lot of false information about the current situation of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, such as false information regarding vaccination. In this paper, we focus on sentiment analysis for Malaysian COVID-19-related news on social media such as Twitter. Tweets in Malaysia are often a combination of Malay, English, and Chinese with plenty of short forms, symbols, emojis, and emoticons within the maximum length of a tweet. The contributions of this paper are twofold. Firstly, we built a multilingual COVID-19 Twitter dataset, comprising tweets written from 1 September 2021 to 12 December 2021. In particular, we collected 108,246 tweets, with over 67% in Malay language, 27% in English, 2% in Chinese, and 4% in other languages. We then manually annotated and assigned the sentiment of 11,568 tweets into three-class sentiments (positive, negative, and neutral) to develop a Malay-language sentiment analysis tool. For this purpose, we applied a data compression method using Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) on the texts and used two deep learning approaches, i.e., the Multilingual Bidirectional Encoder Representation for Transformer (M-BERT) and convolutional neural network (CNN). BPE tokenization is used to encode rare and unknown words into smaller meaningful subwords. With the CNN, we converted the labeled tweets into image files. Our experiments explored different BPE vocabulary sizes with our BPE-Text-to-Image-CNN and BPE-M-BERT models. The results show that the optimal vocabulary size for BPE is 12,000; any values beyond that would not contribute much to the F1-score. Overall, our results show that BPE-M-BERT slightly outperforms the CNN model, thereby showing that the pre-trained M-BERT network has the advantage for our multilingual dataset.

Edge AI accelerators are utilized to accelerate the computation in edge AI devices such as image recognition sensors on robotics, door lockers, drones, and remote sensing satellites. Instead of using a general-purpose processor (GPP) or graphic processing unit (GPU), an edge AI accelerator brings a customized design to meet the requirements of the edge environment. The requirements include real-time processing, low-power consumption, and resource-awareness, including resources on field programmable gate array (FPGA) or limited application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) area. The system’s reliability (e.g., permanent fault tolerance) is essential if the devices target radiation fields such as space and nuclear power stations. This paper proposes a dynamic reconfigurable column streaming-based convolution engine (DycSe) with programmable adder modules for low-power and resource-aware edge AI accelerators to meet the requirements. The proposed DycSe design does not target the FPGA platform only. Instead, it is an intellectual property (IP) core design. The FPGA platform used in this paper is for prototyping the design evaluation. This paper uses the Vivado synthesis tool to evaluate the power consumption and resource usage of DycSe. Since the synthesis tool is limited to giving the final complete system result in the designing stage, we compare DycSe to a commercial edge AI accelerator for cross-reference with other state-of-the-art works. The commercial architecture shares the competitive performance within the low-power ultra-small (LPUS) edge AI scopes. The result shows that DycSe contains 3.56% less power consumption and slight resources (1%) overhead with reconfigurable flexibility.

Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a serious medical condition that necessitates a prompt and exhaustive medical diagnosis. This paper presents a multi-label ICH classification issue with six different types of hemorrhages, namely epidural (EPD), intraparenchymal (ITP), intraventricular (ITV), subarachnoid (SBC), subdural (SBD), and Some. A patient may experience numerous hemorrhages at the same time in some situations. A CT scan of a patient’s skull is used to detect and classify the type of ICH hemorrhage(s) present. First, our model determines whether there is a hemorrhage or not; if there is a hemorrhage, the model attempts to identify the type of hemorrhage(s). In this paper, we present a hybrid deep learning approach that combines convolutional neural network (CNN) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) approaches (Conv-LSTM). In addition, to propose viable solutions for the problem, we used a Systematic Windowing technique with a Conv-LSTM. To ensure the efficacy of the proposed model, experiments are conducted on the RSNA dataset. The suggested model provides higher sensitivity (93.87%), specificity (96.45%), precision (95.21%), and accuracy (95.14%). In addition, the obtained F1 score results outperform existing deep neural network-based algorithms.

The survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is low, and patients with long-term risks of SCA are not adequately alerted. Understanding SCA’s characteristics will be key to developing preventive strategies. Many lives could be saved if SCA’s early onset could be detected or predicted. Monitoring heart signals continuously is essential for diagnosing sporadic cardiac dysfunction. An electrocardiogram (ECG) can be used to continuously monitor heart function without having to go to the hospital. A zeolite-based dry electrode can provide safe on-skin ECG acquisition while the subject is out-of-hospital and facilitate long-term monitoring. To the ECG signal, a low-power 1 μW read-out circuit was designed and implemented in our prior work. However, having long-term ECG monitoring outside the hospital, i.e., high battery life, and low power consumption while transmission and reception of ECG signal are crucial. This paper proposes a prototype with a 10-bit resolution ADC and nRF24L01 transceivers placed 5 m apart. The system uses the 2.4 GHz worldwide ISM frequency band with GFSK modulation to wirelessly transmit digitized ECG bits at 250 kbps data rate to a physician’s computer (or similar) for continuous monitoring of ECG signals; the power consumption is only 11.2 mW and 4.62 mW during transmission and reception, respectively, with a low bit error rate of ≤0.1%. Additionally, a subject-wise cross-validated, three-fold, optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) model using the Physionet-SCA dataset was implemented on NVIDIA Jetson to identify the irregular heartbeats yielding an accuracy of 89% with a run time of 5.31 s. Normal beat classification has an F1 score of 0.94 and a ROC score of 0.886. Thus, this paper integrates the ECG acquisition and processing unit with low-power wireless transmission and CNN model to detect irregular heartbeats.

In this paper, anomaly detection of wheel flats based on signal processing and deep learning techniques is analyzed. Wheel flats mostly affect running stability and ride comfort. Currently, domestic railway companies visually inspect wheel flats one by one with their eyes after railway vehicles enter the railway depots for maintenance. Therefore, CBM (Condition-Based Maintenance) is required for wheel flats resolution. Anomaly detection for wheel flat signals of railway vehicles using Order analysis and STFT (Short Time Fourier Transform) is studied in this paper. In the case of railway vehicles, it is not easy to obtain actual failure data through running vehicles in a university laboratory due to safety and cost issues. Therefore, vibration-induced acceleration was obtained using a multibody dynamics simulation software, SIMPACK. This method is also proved in the other paper by rig tests. In addition, since the noise signal was not included in the simulated vibration, the noise signal obtained from the Seoul Metro Subway Line 7 vehicle was overlapped with the simulated one. Finally, to improve the performance of both detection rate and real-time of characteristics based on existing LeNet-5 architectures, spectrogram images transformed from time domain data were proceeded with the LeNet deep learning model modified with the pooling method and activation function. As a result, it is validated that the method using the spectrogram with a deep learning approach yields higher accuracy than the time domain data.

Air collection around the lung regions can cause lungs to collapse. Conditions like emphysema can cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), wherein lungs get progressively damaged, and the damage cannot be reversed by treatment. It is recommended that these conditions be detected early via highly complex image processing models applied to chest X-rays so that the patient’s life may be extended. Due to COPD, the bronchioles are narrowed and blocked with mucous, and causes destruction of alveolar geometry. These changes can be visually monitored via feature analysis using effective image classification models such as convolutional neural networks (CNN). CNNs have proven to possess more than 95% accuracy for detection of COPD conditions for static datasets. For consistent performance of CNNs, this paper presents an incremental learning mechanism that uses deep transfer learning for incrementally updating classification weights in the system. The proposed model is tested on 3 different lung X-ray datasets, and an accuracy of 99.95% is achieved for detection of COPD. In this paper, a model for temporal analysis of COPD detected imagery is proposed. This model uses Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) for evaluating lifespan of patients with COPD. Analysis of lifespan can assist doctors and other medical practitioners to take recommended steps for aggressive treatment. A smaller dataset was available to perform temporal analysis of COPD values because patients are not advised continuous chest X-rays due to their long-term side effects, which resulted in an accuracy of 97% for lifespan analysis.

In the last 10 years, the demand for robot-based depalletization systems has constantly increased due to the growth of sectors such as logistics, storage, and supply chains. Since the scenarios are becoming more and more unstructured, characterized by unknown pallet layouts and stock-keeping unit shapes, the classical depalletization systems based on the knowledge of predefined positions within the pallet frame are going to be substituted by innovative and robust solutions based on 2D/3D vision and Deep Learning (DL) methods. In particular, the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are deep networks that have proven to be effective in processing 2D/3D images, for example in the automatic object detection task, and robust to the possible variability among the data. However, deep neural networks need a big amount of data to be trained. In this context, whenever deep networks are involved in object detection for supporting depalletization systems, the dataset collection represents one of the main bottlenecks during the commissioning phase. The present work aims at comparing different training strategies to customize an object detection model aiming at minimizing the number of images required for model fitting, while ensuring reliable and robust performances. Different approaches based on a CNN for object detection are proposed, evaluated, and compared in terms of the F1-score. The study was conducted considering different starting conditions in terms of the neural network’s weights, the datasets, and the training set sizes. The proposed approaches were evaluated on the detection of different kinds of paper boxes placed on an industrial pallet. The outcome of the work validates that the best strategy is based on fine-tuning of a CNN-based model already trained on the detection of paper boxes, with a median F1-score greater than 85.0%.

Granting smart device consumers with information, simply and quickly, is what drives quick response (QR) codes and mobile marketing to go hand in hand. It boosts marketing campaigns and objectives and allows one to approach, engage, influence, and transform a wider target audience by connecting from offline to online platforms. However, restricted printing technology and flexibility in surfaces introduce noise while printing QR code images. Moreover, noise is often unavoidable during the gathering and transmission of digital images. Therefore, this paper proposed an automatic and accurate noise detector to identify the type of noise present in QR code images. For this, the paper first generates a new dataset comprising 10,000 original QR code images of varying sizes and later introduces several noises, including salt and pepper, pepper, speckle, Poisson, salt, local var, and Gaussian to form a dataset of 80,000 images. We perform extensive experiments by reshaping the generated images to uniform size for exploiting Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Logistic Regression (LG) to classify the original and noisy images. Later, the analysis is further widened by incorporating histogram density analysis to trace and target highly important features by transforming images of varying sizes to obtain 256 features, followed by SVM, LG, and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to identify the noise type. Moreover, to understand the impact of symmetry of noises in QR code images, we trained the models with combinations of 3-, 5-, and 7-noise types and analyzed the classification performance. From comparative analyses, it is noted that the Gaussian and Localvar noises possess symmetrical characteristics, as all the classifiers did not perform well to segregate these two noises. The results prove that histogram analysis significantly improves classification accuracy with all exploited models, especially when combined with SVM, it achieved maximum accuracy for 4- and 6-class classification problems.

COVID-19 patients require effective diagnostic methods, which are currently in short supply. In this study, we explained how to accurately identify the lung regions on the X-ray scans of such people’s lungs. Images from X-rays or CT scans are critical in the healthcare business. Image data categorization and segmentation algorithms have been developed to help doctors save time and reduce manual errors during the diagnosis. Over time, CNNs have consistently outperformed other image segmentation algorithms. Various architectures are presently based on CNNs such as ResNet, U-Net, VGG-16, etc. This paper merged the U-Net image segmentation and ResNet feature extraction networks to construct the ResUNet++ network. The paper’s novelty lies in the detailed discussion and implementation of the ResUNet++ architecture in lung image segmentation. In this research paper, we compared the ResUNet++ architecture with two other popular segmentation architectures. The ResNet residual block helps us in lowering the feature reduction issues. ResUNet++ performed well compared with the UNet and ResNet architectures by achieving high evaluation scores with the validation dice coefficient (96.36%), validation mean IoU (94.17%), and validation binary accuracy (98.07%). The novelty of this research paper lies in a detailed discussion of the UNet and ResUNet architectures and the implementation of ResUNet++ in lung images. As per our knowledge, until now, the ResUNet++ architecture has not been performed on lung image segmentation. We ran both the UNet and ResNet models for the same amount of epochs and found that the ResUNet++ architecture achieved higher accuracy with fewer epochs. In addition, the ResUNet model gave us higher accuracy (94%) than the UNet model (92%).

The development of convolution neural networks (CNNs) has become a significant means to solve the problem of remote sensing scene image classification. However, well-performing CNNs generally have high complexity and are prone to overfitting. To handle the above problem, we present a new classification approach using an mmsCNN–HMM combined model with stacking ensemble mechanism in this paper. First of all, a modified multi-scale convolution neural network (mmsCNN) is proposed to extract multi-scale structural features, which has a lightweight structure and can avoid high computational complexity. Then, we utilize a hidden Markov model (HMM) to mine the context information of the extracted features of the whole sample image. For different categories of scene images, the corresponding HMM is trained and all the trained HMMs form an HMM group. In addition, our approach is based on a stacking ensemble learning scheme, in which the preliminary predicted values generated by the HMM group are used in an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model to generate the final prediction. This stacking ensemble learning mechanism integrates multiple models to make decisions together, which can effectively prevent overfitting while ensuring accuracy. Finally, the trained XGBoost model conducts the scene category prediction. In this paper, the six most widely used remote sensing scene datasets, UCM, RSSCN, SIRI-WHU, WHU-RS, AID, and NWPU, are selected to carry out all kinds of experiments. The numerical experiments verify that the proposed approach shows more important advantages than the advanced approaches.

Uyghur text detection and recognition in images with simple backgrounds is still a challenging task for Uyghur image content analysis. In this paper, we propose a new effective Uyghur text detection method based on channel-enhanced MSERs and the CNN classification model. In order to extract more complete text components, a new text candidate region extraction algorithm is put forward, which is based on the channel-enhanced MSERs according to the characteristics of Uyghur text. In order to effectively prune the non-text regions, we design a CNN classification network according to the LeNet-5, which gains the description characteristics automatically and avoids the tedious and low efficiency artificial characteristic extraction work. For Uyghur text recognition in images, we improved the traditional CRNN network, and to verify its effectiveness, the networks trained on a synthetic dataset and evaluated on the text recognition datasets. The experimental results indicated that the Uyghur text detection method in this paper is robust and applicable, and the recognition result by improvedCRNN was better than the original CRNN network.

In this paper, we used the single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) imaging technique to visualize the deficiency of dopamine-generated patterns inside the brain. These patterns are used to establish a patient’s disease progression, which helps distinguish the patients into different categories. Furthermore, we used a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to classify the patients based on the dopamine level inside the brain. The dataset used throughout this paper is the Parkinson’s progressive markers initiative (PPMI) dataset. The collected dataset was pre-processed and data amplification was performed to balance the imbalanced dataset. A CNN-based neural network was defined to classify input SPECT images into four categories. The motivation behind the proposed model is to reduce the number of resources consumed while maintaining the performance of the classification model. This will help the healthcare ecosystem run the classification model on mobile devices. The proposed model contains 14 layers with input layers, convolutional layers, max-pool layers, flatten layers, and dense layers with different dimensions. The dense layer classifies the patients into four different categories, including PSD, healthy control, scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficit (SWEDD), and GenReg PSD from the entire SPECT imaging dataset, which is used to establish the disease progression of different patients using SPECT images. The proposed model is trained with a large dataset with 58,692 images for training and 11,738 images for validation, and 7826 for testing. The proposed model outperforms the classification models from the surveyed papers. The proposed model’s accuracy is 0.889, recall is 0.9012, the precision is 0.9104, and the F1-score is 0.9057.

Anomaly perception of infrared point targets has high application value in many fields, such as maritime surveillance, airspace surveillance, and early warning systems. This kind of abnormality includes the explosion of the target, the separation between stages, the disintegration caused by the abnormal strike, etc. By extracting the radiation characteristics of continuous frame targets, it is possible to analyze and warn the target state in time. Most anomaly detection methods adopt traditional outlier detection, which has the problems of poor accuracy and a high false alarm rate. Driven by data, this paper proposes a new network structure, called AC-LSTM, which combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and embeds the Periodic Time Series Data Attention module (PTSA). The network can better extract the spatial and temporal characteristics of one-dimensional time series data, and the PTSA module can consider the periodic characteristics of the target in the process of continuous movement, and focus on abnormal data. In addition, this paper also proposes a new time series data enhancement method, which slices and re-amplifies the long time series data. This method significantly improves the accuracy of anomaly detection. Through a large number of experiments, AC-LSTM has achieved higher scores on our collected datasets than other methods.

Since the 20th century, a rapid process of motorization has begun. The main goal of researchers, engineers and technology companies is to increase the safety and optimality of the movement of vehicles, as well as to reduce the environmental damage caused by the automotive industry. The difficulty of managing traffic flows is that cars are driven by a person and their behavior, even in similar situations, is different and difficult to predict. To solve this problem, ground-based unmanned vehicles are increasingly being developed and implemented; however, like any other intelligent system, it is necessary to train different road scenarios. Currently, an engineer is driving an unmanned vehicle for training and thousands of kilometers are being driven for training. Of course, this approach to training unmanned vehicles is very long, and it is impossible to reproduce all the scenarios that can be found in real operations on a real road. Based on this, we offer a simulator of a realistic urban environment which allows you to reduce the training time and allows you to generate all kinds of events. To implement such a simulator, it is necessary to develop a method that would allow recreating a realistic world in one passage with cameras (monocular) installed on board the vehicle. Based on this, the purpose of this work is to develop an intelligent vehicle recognition system using convolutional neural networks, which allows you to create mesh objects for further placement in the simulator. It is important to note that the resulting objects should be optimal in size so as not to overload the system, since a large number of road infrastructure objects are stored there. Also, neural complexity should not be excessive. In this paper, the general concept and classification of convolutional neural networks are given, which allow solving the problem of recognizing 3D objects in images. Based on the analysis, the existing neural network architectures do not solve the problems mentioned above. In this connection, the authors first of all carried out the design of the system according to the methodology of modeling business processes, and also modified and developed the architecture of the neural network, which allows classifying objects with sufficient accuracy, obtaining optimized mesh objects and reducing computational complexity. The methods proposed in this paper are used in a simulator of a realistic urban environment, which reduces the time and computational costs when training unmanned transport systems.

In recent years, the continuous development of artificial intelligence has largely been driven by algorithms and computing power. This paper mainly discusses the training and inference methods of artificial intelligence from the perspective of computing power. To address the issue of computing power, it is necessary to consider performance, cost, power consumption, flexibility, and robustness comprehensively. At present, the training of artificial intelligence models mostly are based on GPU platforms. Although GPUs offer high computing performance, their power consumption and cost are relatively high. It is not suitable to use GPUs as the implementation platform in certain application scenarios with demanding power consumption and cost. The emergence of high-performance heterogeneous architecture devices provides a new path for the integration of artificial intelligence training and inference. Typically, in Xilinx and Intel’s multi-core heterogeneous architecture, multiple high-performance processors and FPGAs are integrated into a single chip. When compared with the current separate training and inference method, heterogeneous architectures leverage a single chip to realize the integration of AI training and inference, providing a good balance of training and inference of different targets, further reducing the cost of training and implementation of AI inference and power consumption, so as to achieve the lightweight goals of computation, and to improve the flexibility and robustness of the system. In this paper, based on the LeNet-5 network structure, we first introduced the process of network training using a multi-core CPU in Xilinx’s latest multi-core heterogeneous architecture device, MPSoC. Then, the method of converting the network model into hardware logic implementation was studied, and the model parameters were transferred from the processing system of the device to the hardware accelerator structure, composed of programmable logic through the bus interface AXI provided on the chip. Finally, the integrated implementation method was tested and verified in Xilinx MPSoC. According to the test results, the recognition accuracy of this lightweight deployment scheme on MNIST dataset and CIFAR-10 dataset reached 99.5 and 75.4% respectively, while the average processing time of the single frame was only 2.2 ms. In addition, the power consumption of the network within the SoC hardware accelerator is only 1.363 W at 100 MHz.

This paper explores the utilization of smart device sensors for the purpose of vehicle recognition. Currently a ubiquitous aspect of people’s lives, smart devices can conveniently record details about walking, biking, jogging, and stepping, including physiological data, via often built-in phone activity recognition processes. This paper examines research on intelligent transportation systems to uncover how smart device sensor data may be used for vehicle recognition research, and fit within its growing body of literature. Here, we use the accelerometer and gyroscope, which can be commonly found in a smart phone, to detect the class of a vehicle. We collected data from cars, buses, trains, and bikes using a smartphone, and we designed a 1D CNN model leveraging the residual connection for vehicle recognition. The model achieved more than 98% accuracy in prediction. Moreover, we also provide future research directions based on our study.

The convolutional neural network (CNN) has been widely used in the field of self-driving cars. To satisfy the increasing demand, the deeper and wider neural network has become a general trend. However, this leads to the main problem that the deep neural network is computationally expensive and consumes a considerable amount of memory. To compress and accelerate the deep neural network, this paper proposes a filter pruning method based on feature maps clustering. The basic idea is that by clustering, one can know how many features the input images have and how many filters are enough to extract all features. This paper chooses Retinanet and WIDER FACE datasets to experiment with the proposed method. Experiments demonstrate that the hierarchical clustering algorithm is an effective method for filtering pruning, and the silhouette coefficient method can be used to determine the number of pruned filters. This work evaluates the performance change by increasing the pruning ratio. The main results are as follows: Firstly, it is effective to select pruned filters based on feature maps clustering, and its precision is higher than that of a random selection of pruned filters. Secondly, the silhouette coefficient method is a feasible method for finding the best clustering number. Thirdly, the detection speed of the pruned model improves greatly. Lastly, the method we propose can be used not only for Retinanet, but also for other CNN models. Its effect will be verified in future work.

In the field of face biometrics, finding the identity of a person in an image is most researched, but there are other, soft biometric information that are equally as important, such as age, gender, ethnicity or emotion. Nowadays, ethnicity classification has a wide application area and is a prolific area of research. This paper gives an overview of recent advances in ethnicity classification with focus on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and proposes a new ethnicity classification method using only the middle part of the face and CNN. The paper also compares the differences in results of CNN with and without plotted landmarks. The proposed model was tested using holdout testing method on UTKFace dataset and FairFace dataset. The accuracy of the model was 80.34% for classification into five classes and 61.74% for classification into seven classes, which is slightly better than state-of-the-art, but it is also important to note that results in this paper are obtained by using only the middle part of the face which reduces the time and resources necessary.

In smart transportation, assisted driving relies on data integration from various sensors, notably LiDAR and cameras. However, their optical performance can degrade under adverse weather conditions, potentially compromising vehicle safety. Millimeter-wave radar, which can overcome these issues more economically, has been re-evaluated. Despite this, developing an accurate detection model is challenging due to significant noise interference and limited semantic information. To address these practical challenges, this paper presents the TC–Radar model, a novel approach that synergistically integrates the strengths of transformer and the convolutional neural network (CNN) to optimize the sensing potential of millimeter-wave radar in smart transportation systems. The rationale for this integration lies in the complementary nature of CNNs, which are adept at capturing local spatial features, and transformers, which excel at modeling long-range dependencies and global context within data. This hybrid approach allows for a more robust and accurate representation of radar signals, leading to enhanced detection performance. A key innovation of our approach is the introduction of the Cross-Attention (CA) module, which facilitates efficient and dynamic information exchange between the encoder and decoder stages of the network. This CA mechanism ensures that critical features are accurately captured and transferred, thereby significantly improving the overall network performance. In addition, the model contains the dense information fusion block (DIFB) to further enrich the feature representation by integrating different high-frequency local features. This integration process ensures thorough incorporation of key data points. Extensive tests conducted on the CRUW and CARRADA datasets validate the strengths of this method, with the model achieving an average precision (AP) of 83.99% and a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 45.2%, demonstrating robust radar sensing capabilities.
