The spatial-temporal mismatch of water resources and socio-economic development in rapidly urbanized regions has been the focus of water resource management, and is one of the main limitations to sustainable development goals (SDGs). Guangdong Province is represented by a highly developed economy and society, and has been undergoing disproportionately rapid population growth during the past two decades. The uneven distribution and spatial mismatch of water resources have aggravated the contradictions between water supply demand. In this paper, we evaluate the matching degree of water resources and social economic elements, detect the spatial-temporal changing pattern of the matching degree, and reveal the changing mechanism using the combined methods of the Thiel index, the space–time Gini coefficient, and the Lorenz curve. The results show that (1) the temporal matching is relatively balanced and reasonable, while the spatial mismatch is prominent and deteriorating constantly, especially the connection between the amount of water and GDP; (2) the water volume pressure is mainly concentrated in the Peral River Delta and eastern and western Guangdong, while water consumption stress is relatively lower in northeastern Guangdong; and (3) the water volume inequality is dominated by an intercity difference and is primarily caused by regional differences. Based on the results, policy implications, such as the implementation of integrated water resource management plans, investment in the development of alternative water sources, as well as enhanced public education and the establishment of a water saving society, have been provided to alleviate the mismatch issue between water elements and socio-economic parameters, and to push the realization of water-related SDGs. The urban heat island effect poses a growing threat to human society, especially in densely populated and developed megacities. With the introduction of the Local Climate Zones (LCZ) framework, new perspectives and findings have been brought to urban heat island studies. This study investigated the cooling effect of vegetation and albedo on the surface urban heat island (SUHI) in the classification system of LCZ during different seasons, using three Chinese megacities as case study areas. Single-factor linear regression and Pearson's correlation coefficient were applied to analyze the seasonal cooling effect of both albedo and the NDVI on the SUHI within different LCZs. The results show that (1) the variability of the SUHI is reflected in its dominance and intensity within certain LCZs in different cities and in the efficiency of cooling factors; (2) the cooling effect of vegetation is dominant in each season, and the cooling effect produced by albedo within specific seasons can be differentiated by LCZs. The high-level coupling coordination relationship between urban development and a city's water environment carrying capacity is conducive to urban sustainable development. Taking the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle as the research object, this study developed an index system to determine the urban development intensity and water environment carrying capacity, respectively. Based on the comprehensive evaluation model and the coupling coordination degree model, the spatial distribution characteristics, agglomeration law of urban development intensity, water environment carrying capacity and their coupling coordination relationship were analyzed. The results showed that the areas with a high urban development intensity were distributed in the main urban districts of Chengdu and Chongqing, and the intensity gradually reduced away from both core cities, which formed a "ripple-like" pattern. The areas with a high water environment carrying capacity were mainly in the southwest, southeast, northeast and central parts of the region and were distributed in a "W" pattern along the Yangtze River. The coupling coordination degree between the urban development intensity and water environment carrying capacity was low, as only 11.4% of the cities were coordinated while most cities were slightly uncoordinated. Harmonization of satellite imagery provides a good opportunity for studying land surface temperature (LST) as well as the urban heat island effect. However, it is challenging to use the harmonized data for the study of LST due to the systematic bias between the LSTs from different satellites, which is highly influenced by sensor differences and the compatibility of LST retrieval algorithms. To fill this research gap, this study proposes the comparison of different LST images retrieved from various satellites that focus on Hong Kong, China, by applying diverse retrieval algorithms. LST images generated from Landsat-8 using the mono-window algorithm (MWAL8) and split-window algorithm (SWAL8) would be compared with the LST estimations from Sentinel-3 SLSTR and Himawari-8 using the split-window algorithm (SWAS3 and SWAH8). Intercomparison will also be performed through segregated groups of different land use classes both during the daytime and nighttime. Results indicate that there is a significant difference among the quantitative distribution of the LST data generated from these three satellites, with average bias of up to −1.80 K when SWAH8 was compared with MWAL8, despite having similar spatial patterns of the LST images. The findings also suggest that retrieval algorithms and the dominant land use class in the study area would affect the accuracy of image-fusion techniques. The results from the day and nighttime comparisons revealed that there is a significant difference between day and nighttime LSTs, with nighttime LSTs from different satellite sensors more consistent than the daytime LSTs. This emphasizes the need to incorporate as much night-time LST data as available when predicting or optimizing fine-scale LSTs in the nighttime, so as to minimize the bias. The framework designed by this study will serve as a guideline towards efficient spatial optimization and harmonized use of LSTs when utilizing different satellite images associated with an array of land covers and at different times of the day. Satellite-derived rugged land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter indicating the status of the Earth's surface energy budget and its seasonal/temporal dynamic change. However, existing LST products from rugged areas are more prone to error when supporting applications in mountainous areas and Earth surface processes that occur at high spatial and temporal resolutions. This research aimed to develop a method for generating rugged LST with a high temporal and spatial resolution by using an improved ensemble LST model combining three regressors, including a random forest, a ridge, and a support vector machine. Different combinations of high-resolution input parameters were also considered in this study. The input datasets included Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST datasets (MxD11A1) for nighttime, temporal Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) datasets, and digital elevation model (DEM) datasets. The 30 m rugged LST datasets derived were compared against an in situ LST dataset obtained at Saihanba Forest Park (SFP) sites and an ASTER-derived 90 m LST, respectively. The results with in situ measurements demonstrated significant LST details, with an R2 higher than 0.95 and RMSE around 3.00 K for both Terra/MOD- and Aqua/MYD-based LST datasets, and with slightly better results being obtained from the Aqua/MYD-based LST than that from Terra/MOD. The inter-comparison results with ASTER LST showed that over 80% of the pixels of the difference image for the two datasets were within 2 K. In light of the complex topography and distinct atmospheric conditions, these comparison results are encouraging. Liquiritigenin (LQG) is a natural flavonoid from the herb Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch that exhibits multiple biological activities. However, its specific role in antiobesity and its related underlying molecular mechanisms remain unknown. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the effects and regulatory mechanisms of LQG on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The results show that LQG significantly reduced triglyceride levels and downregulated the expression of transcription factors such as CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Additionally, the expression of sterol-regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP1c), acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1), and fatty acid synthase (FASN) involved in lipogenesis was reduced by treatment with LQG. The protein expression levels of light chain 3B (LC3B), autophagy-related protein 7 (ATG7) and p62 were also modulated by LQG, leading to the suppression of autophagy. Further, LQG activated the phosphorylation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), the inhibition of which was followed by the restored expression of autophagy-related proteins. Pretreatment with an mTOR inhibitor also reverted the expression of several genes or proteins involved in lipid synthesis. These results suggest that LQG inhibited lipid accumulation via mTOR-mediated autophagy in 3T3-L1 white adipocytes, indicating the role of LQG as a potential natural bioactive component for use in dietary supplements for preventing obesity. Prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCPs) can suffer from prestress loss caused by wire-breakage, leading to a reduction in load-carrying capacity or a rupture accident. Reinforcement of PCCPs with external prestressed steel strands is an effective way to enhance a deteriorating pipe's ability to withstand the design load. One of the principal advantages of this reinforcement is that there is no need to drain the pipeline. A theoretical derivation is performed, and this tentative design method could be used to determine the area of prestressed steel strands and the corresponding center spacing in terms of prestress loss. The prestress losses of strands are refined and the normal stress between the strands and the pipe wall are assumed to be distributed as a trigonometric function instead of uniformly. This derivation configures the prestress of steel strands to meet the requirements of ultimate limit states, serviceability limit states, and quasi-permanent limit states, considering the tensile strength of the concrete core and the mortar coating, respectively. This theory was applied to the reinforcement design of a PCCP with broken wires (with a diameter of 2000 mm), and a prototype test is carried out to verify the effect of the reinforcement. The load-carrying capacity of the deteriorating PCCPs after reinforcement reached that of the original design level. The prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) suffers from cracks and degrades due to the prestress loss which is induced by wire breakage. Reinforcement with external prestressed strands is an option to return the deteriorating pipe's ability to withstand internal pressures. This reinforcement contributes to actively compensating for the prestress loss caused by broken wires at an economic price. The crack propagation in the core is constrained by the strands. Moreover, the high tensile strength of strands does not decrease with an increase in the bending angle. It is also unnecessary to dewater the pipes during construction. To evaluate the reinforcement effect, a prototype test of a PCCP was performed in an assembled apparatus. The apparatus was mainly constituted by two PCCPs whose internal diameter is 2000 mm. The status of each component of the pipe was measured by resistance strain gauges in three sections along the axial direction at inverted (360°), crown (180°), and spring-line (90°, 270°) orientations. The maximum width of the cracks in the outer concrete core at spring-line reduced from 1.2 to 0.1 mm after strengthening. The cracks of the core concrete changed slightly when the internal water pressure increased to the design pressure of 0.9 MPa. The strengthened pipe was capable of sustaining the design internal water pressure and the water tightness property was in a good state. The strains of the steel strands were all below the tensile strain level. The reinforcement of the PCCP with external prestressed steel strands is able to meet the strengthen requirement of the test. Astragalus membranaceus (AM) is a food and medicinal homologous plant. The current research is aimed to investigate the beneficial effects and mechanisms of AM in treating acquired hyperlipidemia. The network pharmacology and bioinformatics analysis results showed 481 AM-related targets and 474 acquired hyperlipidemia-associated targets, and 101 candidate targets were obtained through the intersection, mainly enriched in endocrine resistance, AGE-RAGE in diabetic complications and p53 signaling pathways. Quercetin, kaempferol, calycosin, formononetin and isorhamnetin were determined as the candidate active components of AM in the treatment of acquired hyperlipidemia. Moreover, key targets of AM, namely, AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), cyclin D1 (CCND1) and estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1), were screened out, which were closely related to adipogenesis, fatty acid metabolism and bile acid metabolism. The subsequent animal experiments showed that AM extract treatment improved the lipid profiles of the high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice by reducing lipogenesis and increasing lipolysis and lipid β-oxidation, which were associated with the downregulating of AKT1 and CCND1, and the upregulating of VEGFA and ESR1 in liver and adipose tissue. Overall, AM alleviated acquired hyperlipidemia through regulating lipid metabolism, and AKT1, VEGFA, CCND1 and ESR1 might be the key targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Satellite-derived lake surface water temperature (LSWT) measurements can be used for monitoring purposes. However, analyses based on the LSWT of Lake Ontario and the surrounding land surface temperature (LST) are scarce in the current literature. First, we provide an evaluation of the commonly used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived LSWT/LST (MOD11A1 and MYD11A1) using in situ measurements near the area of where Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River and the Rideau Canal meet. The MODIS datasets agreed well with ground sites measurements from 2015–2017, with an R2 consistently over 0.90. Among the different ground measurement sites, the best results were achieved for Hill Island, with a correlation of 0.99 and centered root mean square difference (RMSD) of 0.73 K for Aqua/MYD nighttime. The validated MODIS datasets were used to analyze the temperature trend over the study area from 2001 to 2018, through a linear regression method with a Mann–Kendall test. A slight warming trend was found, with 95% confidence over the ground sites from 2003 to 2012 for the MYD11A1-Night datasets. The warming trend for the whole region, including both the lake and the land, was about 0.17 K year−1 for the MYD11A1 datasets during 2003–2012, whereas it was about 0.06 K year−1 during 2003–2018. There was also a spatial pattern of warming, but the trend for the lake region was not obviously different from that of the land region. Sensible heat exchange has important consequences for urban meteorology and related applications. Directional radiometric surface temperatures of urban canopies observed by remote sensing platforms have the potential to inform estimations of urban sensible heat flux. An imaging radiometer viewing the surface from nadir cannot capture the complete urban surface temperature, which is defined as the mean surface temperature over all urban facets in three dimensions, which includes building wall surface temperatures and requires an estimation of urban sensible heat flux. In this study, a numerical microclimate model, Temperatures of Urban Facets in 3-D (TUF-3D), was used to model sensible heat flux as well as radiometric and complete surface temperatures. Model data were applied to parameterize an effective resistance for the calculation of urban sensible heat flux from the radiometric (nadir view) surface temperature. The results showed that sensible heat flux was overestimated during daytime when the radiometric surface temperature was used without the effective resistance that accounts for the impact of wall surface temperature on heat flux. Parameterization of this additional resistance enabled reasonably accurate estimates of urban sensible heat flux from the radiometric surface temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to explore the immediate effect of polysaccharides and macrophages, polysaccharides from masson pine pollen (PPM60) were labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) by using a chemical-derived method, and the reactant was named PPM60-Tyr-FITC. Direct interaction of PPM60-Tyr-FITC and RAW264.7 macrophages could be detected by flow cytometer (FCM), and this interaction could be inhibited by Pitstop 2 (clathrin inhibitor) and TAK-242 (Toll-like receptor 4 inhibitor). The results of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) also revealed that there was a co-localization phenomenon between PPM60-Tyr-FITC and RAW264.7 macrophage receptors, and it could be suppressed by Pitstop 2 and TAK-242. It was confirmed that PPM60 enters into RAW264.7 macrophages mainly through endocytosis, rather than the phagocytosis, and TLR4 played a mediating role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
