The detection and monitoring of burned areas is crucial for vegetation recovery, loss assessment, and anomaly analysis. Although vegetation indices (VIs) have been widely used, accurate vegetation detection is challenging due to potential confusion in the spectra of different types of land cover and the interference of shadow effects caused by terrain. In this work, a novel Vegetation Anomaly Spectral Texture Index (VASTI) is proposed, which leverages the merits of both spectral and spatial texture features to identify abnormal pixels for extracting burned vegetation areas. The performance of the VASTI and its components, the Global Environmental Monitoring Index (GEMI), the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and the texture feature Autocorrelation (AC) were assessed based on a global dataset previously established, which contains 1774 pairs of samples from 10 different sites. The results illustrated that, compared with the GEMI and EVI, the VASTI improved the user's accuracy (UA), producer's accuracy (PA), and kappa coefficient across the ten study areas by approximately 5% to 10%. Compared to AC, the VASTI improved the accuracy of abnormal vegetation detection by 13% to 25%. The improvements were mainly caused by the fact that the incorporation of texture features can reduce spectral confusion between pixels. The innovation of the VASTI is that it considers the relationship between anomalous pixels and surrounding pixels by explicitly integrating spatial texture features with traditional spectral features. Monitoring and estimating the density of microalgae in a closed cultivation system is a critical task in culturing algae since it allows growers to optimally control both nutrients and cultivating conditions. Among the estimation techniques proposed so far, image-based methods, which are less invasive, nondestructive, and more biosecure, are practically preferred. Nevertheless, the premise behind most of those approaches is simply averaging the pixel values of images as inputs of a regression model to predict density values, which may not provide rich information of the microalgae presenting in the images. In this work, we propose to exploit more advanced texture features extracted from captured images, including confidence intervals of means of pixel values, powers of spatial frequencies presenting in images, and entropies accounting for pixel distribution. These diverse features can provide more information of microalgae, which can lead to more accurate estimation results. More importantly, we propose to use the texture features as inputs of a data-driven model based on L1 regularization, called least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), where their coefficients are optimized in a manner that prioritizes more informative features. The LASSO model was then employed to efficiently estimate the density of microalgae presenting in a new image. The proposed approach was validated in real-world experiments monitoring the Chlorella vulgaris microalgae strain, where the obtained results demonstrate its outperformance compared with other methods. More specifically, the average error in the estimation obtained by the proposed approach is 1.54, whereas those obtained by the Gaussian process and gray-scale-based methods are 2.16 and 3.68, respectively.

Accurate and reliable mapping of fire extent and severity is critical for assessing the impact of fire on vegetation and informing post-fire recovery trajectories. Classification approaches that combine pixel-wise and neighbourhood statistics including image texture derived from high-resolution satellite data may improve on current methods of fire severity mapping. Texture is an innate property of all land cover surfaces that is known to vary between fire severity classes, becoming increasingly more homogenous as fire severity increases. In this study, we compared candidate backscatter and reflectance indices derived from Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 2, respectively, together with grey-level-co-occurrence-matrix (GLCM)-derived texture indices using a random forest supervised classification framework. Cross-validation (for which the target fire was excluded in training) and target-trained (for which the target fire was included in training) models were compared to evaluate performance between the models with and without texture indices. The results indicated that the addition of texture indices increased the classification accuracies of severity for both sensor types, with the greatest improvements in the high severity class (23.3%) for the Sentinel 1 and the moderate severity class (17.4%) for the Sentinel 2 target-trained models. The target-trained models consistently outperformed the cross-validation models, especially with regard to Sentinel 1, emphasising the importance of local training data in capturing post-fire variation in different forest types and severity classes. The Sentinel 2 models more accurately estimated fire extent and were improved with the addition of texture indices (3.2%). Optical sensor data yielded better results than C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with respect to distinguishing fire severity and extent. Successful detection using C-band data was linked to significant structural change in the canopy (i.e., partial-complete canopy consumption) and is more successful over sparse, low-biomass forest. Future research will investigate the sensitivity of longer-wavelength (L-band) SAR regarding fire severity estimation and the potential for an integrated fire-mapping system that incorporates both active and passive remote sensing to detect and monitor changes in vegetation cover and structure. To achieve the rapid recognition and accurate picking of Camellia oleifera fruits, a binocular vision system composed of two industrial cameras was used to collect images of Camellia oleifera fruits in natural environments. The YOLOv7 convolutional neural network model was used for iterative training, and the optimal weight model was selected to recognize the images and obtain the anchor frame region of the Camellia oleifera fruits. The local binary pattern (LBP) maps of the anchor frame region were extracted and matched by using the normalized correlation coefficient template matching algorithm to obtain the positions of the center point in the left and right images. The recognition experimental results showed that the accuracy rate, recall rate, mAP and F1 of the model were 97.3%, 97.6%, 97.7% and 97.4%. The recognition rate of the Camellia oleifera fruit with slight shading was 93.13%, and the recognition rate with severe shading was 75.21%. The recognition rate of the Camellia oleifera fruit was 90.64% under sunlight condition, and the recognition rate was 91.34% under shading condition. The orchard experiment results showed that, in the depth range of 400–600 mm, the maximum error value of the binocular stereo vision system in the depth direction was 4.279 mm, and the standard deviation was 1.142 mm. The detection and three-dimensional positioning accuracy of the binocular stereo vision system for Camellia oleifera fruits could basically meet the working requirements of the Camellia oleifera fruit-picking robot. The generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) through stereogrammetry of optical satellite images has gained great popularity across various disciplines. For the analysis of these DEMs, it is important to understand the influence of the input data and different processing steps and parameters employed during stereo correlation. Here, we explore the effects that image texture, as well as the use of different matching algorithms (Block Matching (BM) and More Global Matching (MGM)), can have on optical DEMs derived from the flexible, open-source Ames Stereo Pipeline. Our analysis relies on a ∼2700 km 2 clip of a SPOT6 tristereo scene covering the hyperarid, vegetation-free Pocitos Basin and adjacent mountain ranges in the northwestern Argentine Andes. A large, perfectly flat salt pan (paleolake bed) that covers the center of this basin is characterized by strong contrasts in image texture, providing a unique opportunity to quantitatively study the relationship between image texture and DEM quality unaffected by topography. Our findings suggest that higher image texture, measured by panchromatic variance, leads to lower DEM uncertainty. This improvement continues up to ∼10 3 panchromatic variance, above which further improvements in DEM quality are independent of local image texture but instead may have sensor or geometric origins. Based on this behavior, we propose that image texture may serve as an important proxy of DEM quality prior to stereo correlation and can help to set adequate processing parameters. With respect to matching algorithms, we observe that MGM improves matching in low-texture areas and overall generates a smoother surface that still preserves complex, narrow (i.e., ridge and valley) features. Based on this sharper representation of the landscape, we conclude that MGM should be preferred for geomorphic applications relying on stereo-derived DEMs. However, we note that the correlation kernel selected for stereo-matching must be carefully chosen depending on local image texture, whereby larger kernels generate more accurate matches (less artifacts) at the cost of smoothing results. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) fruit samples belonging to the 'Mejhoul' and 'Boufeggous' cultivars were harvested at the Tamar stage and used in our experiments. Before scanning, date samples were dried using convective drying at 60 °C and infrared drying at 60 °C with a frequency of 50 Hz, and then they were scanned. The scanning trials were performed for two hundred date palm fruit in fresh, convective-dried, and infrared-dried forms of each cultivar using a flatbed scanner. The image-texture parameters of date fruit were extracted from images converted to individual color channels in RGB, Lab, XYZ, and UVS color models. The models to classify fresh and dried samples were developed based on selected image textures using machine learning algorithms belonging to the groups of Bayes, Trees, Lazy, Functions, and Meta. For both the 'Mejhoul' and 'Boufeggous' cultivars, models built using Random Forest from the group of Trees turned out to be accurate and successful. The average classification accuracy for fresh, convective-dried, and infrared-dried 'Mejhoul' reached 99.33%, whereas fresh, convective-dried, and infrared-dried samples of 'Boufeggous' were distinguished with an average accuracy of 94.33%. In the case of both cultivars and each model, the higher correctness of discrimination was between fresh and infrared-dried samples, whereas the highest number of misclassified cases occurred between fresh and convective-dried fruit. Thus, the developed procedure may be considered an innovative approach to the non-destructive assessment of drying impact on the external quality characteristics of date palm fruit. In China, cemented paste backfill (CPB) is a common treatment method after the exploitation of basic energy. The homogeneity of slurry influences the performance of CPB. However, the online monitoring and characterization of homogeneity lack relevant technologies and unified standards. This article discusses an online image analysis technique applied to the online monitoring of cemented paste backfill mixing, which is based on the evolution of the texture of images taken at the surface of the mixing bed. First, the grayscale distribution of the image obtained by the high-speed camera in the CPB preparation process was analyzed by Matlab and its variance (s2) was solved, and the texture features of the image were analyzed by the variance of grayscale distribution. Then, a homogeneity discriminant model ( c s t ) was established. The results show that the variance value of the grayscale distribution of the slurry image increases rapidly at first, then gradually decreases, and becomes stable in the final stage since it turns a constant value. When the s2 value tends to be stable, the slurry gradually reaches homogenization, and the discriminant coefficient of paste homogenization based on the homogenization discriminant model reaches 0.05. The homogenization prediction of CPB proves to be consistent with the backfill performance comparison results. The evolution of the texture allows obtaining important information on the evolution of different formulations during mixing, which can be used for intelligent monitoring of CPB preparation process. Carbon fiber plain-woven prepreg is one of the basic materials in the field of composite material design and manufacturing, in which defect identification is an important and easily neglected part of testing. Here, a novel high recognition rate inspection method for carbon fiber plain-woven prepregs is proposed for inspecting bubble and wrinkle defects based on image texture feature compression. The proposed method attempts to divide the image into non-overlapping block lattices as texture primitives and compress them into a binary feature matrix. Texture features are extracted using a gray level co-occurrence matrix. The defect types are further defined according to texture features by k-means clustering. The performance is evaluated in some existing computer vision and machine learning methods based on fiber recognition. Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is one of the horses' dental diseases, mainly affecting the incisor teeth. An increase in the incidence of aged horses and a painful progressive course of the disease create the need for improved early diagnosis. Besides clinical findings, EOTRH recognition is based on the typical radiographic findings, including levels of dental resorption and hypercementosis. This study aimed to introduce digital processing methods to equine dental radiographic images and identify texture features changing with disease progression. The radiographs of maxillary incisor teeth from 80 horses were obtained. Each incisor was annotated by separate masks and clinically classified as 0, 1, 2, or 3 EOTRH degrees. Images were filtered by Mean , Median , Normalize , Bilateral , Binomial , CurvatureFlow , LaplacianSharpening , DiscreteGaussian , and SmoothingRecursiveGaussian filters independently, and 93 features of image texture were extracted using First Order Statistics (FOS), Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Neighbouring Gray Tone Difference Matrix (NGTDM), Gray Level Dependence Matrix (GLDM), Gray Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM), and Gray Level Size Zone Matrix (GLSZM) approaches. The most informative processing was selected. GLCM and GLRLM return the most favorable features for the quantitative evaluation of radiographic signs of the EOTRH syndrome, which may be supported by filtering by filters improving the edge delimitation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of machine learning based on image texture parameters to discriminate plum stone cultivars. The plums of cultivars 'Emper', 'Kalipso', and 'Polinka' were sampled. For each cultivar, one hundred images of plum stones were acquired using a digital camera. Processing of the plum stone images included the conversion of the images to individual color channels, image segmentation, region of interest (ROI) determination, and texture parameter extraction. Then, the discriminant analysis, including the texture selection and building discriminative models for the evaluation of the diversity of the plum stone cultivars, was carried out. The obtained results of discrimination of plum stone cultivars were very accurate and confirmed the effectiveness of image processing to evaluate the cultivar diversity. The most satisfactory results, reaching 96.67% for the average accuracy for three cultivars (97% for 'Emper', 'Kalipso', and 96% for 'Polinka'), were obtained for the models built based on combined textures selected from all the color channels using the IBk classifier. Image processing has played a relevant role in various industries, where the main challenge is to extract specific features from images. Specifically, texture characterizes the phenomenon of the occurrence of a pattern along the spatial distribution, taking into account the intensities of the pixels for which it has been applied in classification and segmentation tasks. Therefore, several feature extraction methods have been proposed in recent decades, but few of them rely on entropy, which is a measure of uncertainty. Moreover, entropy algorithms have been little explored in bidimensional data. Nevertheless, there is a growing interest in developing algorithms to solve current limits, since Shannon Entropy does not consider spatial information, and SampEn2D generates unreliable values in small sizes. We introduce a proposed algorithm, EspEn (Espinosa Entropy), to measure the irregularity present in two-dimensional data, where the calculation requires setting the parameters as follows: m (length of square window), r (tolerance threshold), and ρ (percentage of similarity). Three experiments were performed; the first two were on simulated images contaminated with different noise levels. The last experiment was with grayscale images from the Normalized Brodatz Texture database (NBT). First, we compared the performance of EspEn against the entropy of Shannon and SampEn2D. Second, we evaluated the dependence of EspEn on variations of the values of the parameters m , r , and ρ. Third, we evaluated the EspEn algorithm on NBT images. The results revealed that EspEn could discriminate images with different size and degrees of noise. Finally, EspEn provides an alternative algorithm to quantify the irregularity in 2D data; the recommended parameters for better performance are m = 3, r = 20, and ρ = 0.7.

Soil amendments (e.g., compost) require uniform incorporation in the soil profile to benefit plants. However, machines may not mix them uniformly throughout the upper soil layer commonly explored by plant roots. The study focuses on using image texture analysis to determine the level of mixing uniformity in the soil following the passage of two kinds of harrows. A 12.3-megapixel DX-format digital camera acquired images of soil/expanded polystyrene (in the laboratory) and soil/compost mixtures (in field conditions). In the laboratory, pictures captured the soil before and during the simulated progressive mixing of expanded polystyrene particles. In field conditions, images captured the exposed superficial horizons of compost-amended soil after the passage of a combined spike-tooth–disc harrow and a disc harrow. Image texture analysis based on the gray-level co-occurrence matrix calculated the sums of dissimilarity, contrast, entropy, and uniformity metrics. In the laboratory conditions, the progressive mixing resulted in increased image dissimilarity (from 1.15 ± 0.74 × 106 to 1.65 ± 0.52 × 106) and contrast values (from 2.69 ± 2.06 × 106 to 5.67 ± × 1.93 106), almost constant entropy (3.50 ± 0.25 × 106), and decreased image uniformity (from 6.65 ± 0.31 × 105 to 4.49 ± 1.36 × 105). Using a tooth-disc harrow in the open field resulted in higher dissimilarity, contrast, entropy (+73.3%, +62.8%, +16.3%), and lower image uniformity (−50.6%) than the disc harrow, suggesting enhanced mixing in the superficial layer. For terrain recognition needs during vehicle driving, this paper carries out terrain classification research based on vibration and image information. Twenty time-domain features and eight frequency-domain features of vibration signals that are highly correlated with terrain are selected, and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimensionality of the time-domain and frequency-domain features and retain the main information. Meanwhile, the texture features of the terrain images are extracted using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) technique, and the feature information of the vibration and images are fused in the feature layer. Then, the improved weighted K-nearest neighbor (WKNN) algorithm is used to achieve the terrain classification during the travel process of tracked robots. Finally, the experimental results verify that the proposed method improves the terrain classification accuracy of the tracked robot and provides a basis for improving the stable autonomous driving of tracked vehicles. The cultivar and fertilization can affect the physicochemical properties of pepper fruit. This study aimed at estimating the content of α-carotene, β-carotene, total carotenoids, and the total sugars of unfertilized pepper and samples treated with natural fertilizers based on texture parameters determined using image analysis. Pearson's correlation coefficients, scatter plots, regression equations, and coefficients of determination were determined. For red pepper Sprinter F1, the correlation coefficient (R) reached 0.9999 for a texture from color channel B and −0.9999 for a texture from channel Y for the content of α-carotene, −0.9998 (channel a) for β-carotene, 0.9999 (channel a) and −0.9999 (channel L) for total carotenoids, as well as 0.9998 (channel R) and −0.9998 (channel a) for total sugars. The image textures of yellow pepper Devito F1 were correlated with the content of total carotenoids and total sugars with the correlation coefficient reaching −0.9993 (channel b) and 0.9999 (channel Y), respectively. The coefficient of determination (R2) of up to 0.9999 for α-carotene content and the texture from color channel Y for pepper Sprinter F1 and 0.9998 for total sugars and the texture from color channel Y for pepper Devito F1 were found. In the present paper, a methodological scheme, bringing together common Acoustic Seabed Classification (ASC) systems and a powerful data decomposition approach, called Independent Component Analysis (ICA), is demonstrated regarding its suitability for detecting small targets in Side Scan Sonar imagery. Traditional ASC systems extract numerous texture descriptors, leading to a large feature vector, the dimensionality of which is reduced by means of data decomposition techniques, usually Principal Component Analysis (PCA), prior to classification. However, in the target detection issue, data decomposition should point towards finding components that represent sub-ordinary image information (i.e., small targets) rather than a dominant one. ICA has long been proved to be suitable for separating targets from a background, and this study represents a novel exhibition of its applicability to Side Scan Sonar (SSS) images. The present study attempts to build a fully automated target detection approach that combines image based feature extraction, ICA, and unsupervised classification. The suitability of the proposed approach has been demonstrated using an SSS data-set containing more than 70 manmade targets, most of them metallic, validated through a marine magnetic survey or ground truthing inspection. The method exhibited very good performance as it was able to detect more than 77% of the targets and it produced less than seven false alarms per km². Moreover, it was compared to cases where, in the exact same methodological scheme, no decomposition technique is used, or PCA is employed instead of ICA, achieving the highest detection rate, but, more importantly, producing more than six times less false alarms, thus proving that ICA successfully manages to maximize target to background separation. Simple Summary: Detecting horse state after exercise is critical for maximizing athletic performance. The horse's response to fatigue includes exercise termination or exercise continuation at a lower intensity, which significantly limit the results achieved in races and equestrian competition. As conventional methods of detecting and quantifying exercise effort have shown some limitations, infrared thermography was proposed as a method of contactless detection of exercise effect. The promising correlation between body surface temperature and exercise-dependent blood biomarkers has been demonstrated. As the application of conventional thermography is limited by low specificity, advanced thermal image analysis was proposed here to visualize the link between blood biomarkers and texture of thermal images. Twelve horses underwent standardized exercise tests for six consecutive days, and both thermal images and blood samples were collected before and after each test. The images were analyzed using four color models (RGB, red-green-blue; YUV, brightness-UV-components; YIQ, brightness-IQ-components; HSB, hue-saturation-brightness) and eight texture-features approaches, including 88 features in total. In contrast to conventional temperature measures, as many as twelve texture features in two color models (RGB, YIQ) were linked with blood biomarker levels as part of the horse's response to exercise. As the detection of horse state after exercise is constantly developing, a link between blood biomarkers and infrared thermography (IRT) was investigated using advanced image texture analysis. The aim of the study was to determine which combinations of RGB (red-green-blue), YUI (brightness-UV-components), YIQ (brightness-IQ-components), and HSB (hue-saturation-brightness) color models, components, and texture features are related to the blood biomarkers of exercise effect. Twelve Polish warmblood horses underwent standardized exercise tests for six consecutive days. Both thermal images and blood samples were collected before and after each test. All 144 obtained IRT images were analyzed independently for 12 color components in four color models using eight texture-feature approaches, including 88 features. The similarity between blood biomarker levels and texture features was determined using linear regression models. In the horses' thoracolumbar region, 12 texture features (nine in RGB, one in YIQ, and two in HSB) were related to blood biomarkers. Variance, sum of squares, and sum of variance in the RGB were highly repeatable between image processing protocols. The combination of two approaches of image texture (histogram statistics and gray-level co-occurrence matrix) and two color models (RGB, YIQ), should be considered in the application of digital image processing of equine IRT. Featured Application: This research applied the described methods of image analysis to create a robust analysis model to develop multiple avenues of research of great interest in biomedicine. Low back pain is the leading cause of disability in the world, with a significant socio-economic impact. Deep dry needling is effective in the treatment of this pain, and it is one of the techniques preferred by physiotherapists. In this field, the use of ultrasound provides information of interest such as length, thickness, diameter, cross-sectional area, or muscle volume, among others. Objective: To find out whether the tissue changes (thickness, histogram, and contraction rate) that occur in the lumbar multifidus after application of the deep dry needle are related to changes in the pain and the disability of the patient. Design: Randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial. Setting: University of Alcalá, Department of Physiotherapy. Subjects: 21 voluntary patients (women and men) with non-specific low-back pain aged 18–65 years. Intervention: Patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group received dry needling and the other group a dry needling placebo. Initial post-needling and one week post-needling assessments were performed by a therapist blinded to the intervention. Variables: Lumbar multifidus thickness measured by RUSI, contraction time measured by M-mode, histograms measured by image analysis, muscle area, pain measured by VAS, pressure pain threshold measured by pressure algometer, and disability measured by Roland–Morris questionnaire. Conclusions: The contraction speed, resting thickness, and pain demonstrated significant differences within each group, but not between groups. There were significant differences in contraction ratio and in PPT between groups. There was excellent intra-examiner reliability in image collection for histogram analysis. Histogram analysis showed no significant differences between groups and measurements, neither for the parameters nor for the parameters combined with the outcome variables. This study investigated both spectrum and texture features for detecting early blight disease on eggplant leaves. Hyperspectral images for healthy and diseased samples were acquired covering the wavelengths from 380 to 1023 nm. Four gray images were identified according to the effective wavelengths (408, 535, 624 and 703 nm). Hyperspectral images were then converted into RGB, HSV and HLS images. Finally, eight texture features (mean, variance, homogeneity, contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, second moment and correlation) based on gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) were extracted from gray images, RGB, HSV and HLS images, respectively. The dependent variables for healthy and diseased samples were set as 0 and 1. K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and AdaBoost classification models were established for detecting healthy and infected samples. All models obtained good results with the classification rates (CRs) over 88.46% in the testing sets. The results demonstrated that spectrum and texture features were effective for early blight disease detection on eggplant leaves.

This study aimed to identify a distant-recurrence image biomarker in NSCLC by investigating correlations between heterogeneity functional gene expression and fluorine-18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) image features of NSCLC patients. RNA-sequencing data and 18F-FDG PET images of 53 patients with NSCLC (19 with distant recurrence and 34 without recurrence) from The Cancer Imaging Archive and The Cancer Genome Atlas Program databases were used in a combined analysis. Weighted correlation network analysis was performed to identify gene groups related to distant recurrence. Genes were selected for functions related to distant recurrence. In total, 47 image features were extracted from PET images as radiomics. The relationship between gene expression and image features was estimated using a hypergeometric distribution test with the Pearson correlation method. The distant recurrence prediction model was validated by a random forest (RF) algorithm using image texture features and related gene expression. In total, 37 gene modules were identified by gene-expression pattern with weighted gene co-expression network analysis. The gene modules with the highest significance were selected (p-value < 0.05). Nine genes with high protein–protein interaction and area under the curve (AUC) were identified as hub genes involved in the proliferation function, which plays an important role in distant recurrence of cancer. Four image features (GLRLM_SRHGE, GLRLM_HGRE, SUVmean, and GLZLM_GLNU) and six genes were identified to be correlated (p-value < 0.1). AUCs (accuracy: 0.59, AUC: 0.729) from the 47 image texture features and AUCs (accuracy: 0.767, AUC: 0.808) from hub genes were calculated using the RF algorithm. AUCs (accuracy: 0.783, AUC: 0.912) from the four image texture features and six correlated genes and AUCs (accuracy: 0.738, AUC: 0.779) from only the four image texture features were calculated using the RF algorithm. The four image texture features validated by heterogeneity group gene expression were found to be related to cancer heterogeneity. The different cultivars of apricot seeds may differ in their properties. To ensure economical and efficient seed processing, knowledge of the cultivars' composition and physical properties may be necessary. Therefore, the correct identification of the cultivar of the apricot seeds may be very important. The objective of this study was to develop models based on selected textures of apricot seed images to distinguish different cultivars. The images of four cultivars of apricot seeds were acquired using a flatbed scanner. For each seed, approximately 1600 textures from the image, converted to the different color channels R, G, B, L, a, b, X, Y, and Z, were calculated. The models were built separately for the individual color channels; the color spaces Lab, RGB, XYZ; and all color channels combined based on selected texture parameters using different classifiers. The average accuracy of the classification of apricot seeds reached 99% (with an accuracy of 100% for the seeds of the cultivars 'Early Orange', 'Bella', and 'Harcot', and 96% for 'Taja') in the case of the set of textures selected from the color space Lab for the model built using the Multilayer Perceptron classifier. The same classifier produced high average accuracies for the color spaces RGB (90%) and XYZ (86%). For the set of textures selected from all color channels, i.e., R, G, B, L, a, b, X, Y, and Z, the average accuracy reached 96% (Multilayer Perceptron and Random Forest classifiers). In the case of individual color channels, the highest average accuracy was up to 91% for the models built based on a set of textures selected from color channel b (Multilayer Perceptron). The results proved the possibility of distinguishing apricot seed cultivars with a high probability using a non-destructive, inexpensive, and objective procedure involving image analysis. This study investigated both spectrum and texture features for detecting early blight disease on eggplant leaves. Hyperspectral images for healthy and diseased samples were acquired covering the wavelengths from 380 to 1023 nm. Four gray images were identified according to the effective wavelengths (408, 535, 624 and 703 nm). Hyperspectral images were then converted into RGB, HSV and HLS images. Finally, eight texture features (mean, variance, homogeneity, contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, second moment and correlation) based on gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) were extracted from gray images, RGB, HSV and HLS images, respectively. The dependent variables for healthy and diseased samples were set as 0 and 1. K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and AdaBoost classification models were established for detecting healthy and infected samples. All models obtained good results with the classification rates (CRs) over 88.46% in the testing sets. Image classification is widely used to build predictive models for breast cancer diagnosis. Most existing approaches overwhelmingly rely on deep convolutional networks to build such diagnosis pipelines. These model architectures, although remarkable in performance, are black-box systems that provide minimal insight into the inner logic behind their predictions. This is a major drawback as the explainability of prediction is vital for applications such as cancer diagnosis. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing an explainable machine learning pipeline for breast cancer diagnosis based on ultrasound images. We extract first- and second-order texture features of the ultrasound images and use them to build a probabilistic ensemble of decision tree classifiers. Each decision tree learns to classify the input ultrasound image by learning a set of robust decision thresholds for texture features of the image. The decision path of the model predictions can then be interpreted by decomposing the learned decision trees. This study proposes a novel method for multichannel image gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture representation. It is well known that the standard procedure for the automatic extraction of GLCM textures is based on a mono-spectral image. In real applications, however, the GLCM texture feature extraction always refers to multi/hyperspectral images. The widely used strategy to deal with this issue is to calculate the GLCM from the first principal component or the panchromatic band, which do not include all the useful information. Accordingly, in this study, we propose to represent the multichannel textures for multi/hyperspectral imagery by the use of: (1) clustering algorithms; and (2) sparse representation, respectively. In this way, the multi/hyperspectral images can be described using a series of quantized codes or dictionaries, which are more suitable for multichannel texture representation than the traditional methods. Specifically, K-means and fuzzy c-means methods are adopted to generate the codes of an image from the clustering point of view, while a sparse dictionary learning method based on two coding rules is proposed to produce the texture primitives. The proposed multichannel GLCM textural extraction methods were evaluated with four multi/hyperspectral datasets: GeoEye-1 and QuickBird multispectral images of the city of Wuhan, the well-known AVIRIS hyperspectral dataset from the Indian Pines test site, and the HYDICE airborne hyperspectral dataset from the Washington DC Mall. The results show that both the clustering-based and sparsity-based GLCM textures outperform the traditional method (extraction based on the first principal component) in terms of classification accuracies in all the experiments. This paper discusses using computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) to distinguish between hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), i.e., the most common type of primary liver malignancy and a leading cause of death in people with cirrhosis worldwide, and liver abscess based on ultrasound image texture features and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Among 79 cases of liver diseases including 44 cases of liver cancer and 35 cases of liver abscess, this research extracts 96 features including 52 features of the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and 44 features of the gray-level run-length matrix (GLRLM) from the regions of interest (ROIs) in ultrasound images. Three feature selection models—(i) sequential forward selection (SFS), (ii) sequential backward selection (SBS), and (iii) F-score—are adopted to distinguish the two liver diseases. Finally, the developed system can classify liver cancer and liver abscess by SVM with an accuracy of 88.875%. Background: Feature extraction is an essential part of a Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system. It is usually preceded by a pre-processing step and followed by image classification. Usually, a large number of features is needed to end up with the desired classification results. In this work, we propose a novel approach for texture feature extraction. This method was tested on larynx Contact Endoscopy (CE)—Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) image classification to provide more objective information for otolaryngologists regarding the stage of the laryngeal cancer. Methods: The main idea of the proposed methods is to represent an image as a hilly surface, where different paths can be identified between a starting and an ending point. Each of these paths can be thought of as a Tour de France stage profile where a cyclist needs to perform a specific effort to arrive at the finish line. Several paths can be generated in an image where different cyclists produce an average cyclist effort representing important textural characteristics of the image. Energy and power as two Cyclist Effort Features (CyEfF) were extracted using this concept. The performance of the proposed features was evaluated for the classification of 2701 CE-NBI images into benign and malignant lesions using four supervised classifiers and subsequently compared with the performance of 24 Geometrical Features (GF) and 13 Entropy Features (EF). Results: The CyEfF features showed maximum classification accuracy of 0.882 and improved the GF classification accuracy by 3 to 12 percent. Moreover, CyEfF features were ranked as the top 10 features along with some features from GF set in two feature ranking methods. Conclusion: The results prove that CyEfF with only two features can describe the textural characterization of CE-NBI images and can be part of the CAD system in combination with GF for laryngeal cancer diagnosis. Compared to multispectral or panchromatic bands, fusion imagery contains both the spectral content of the former and the spatial resolution of the latter. Even though the Estimation of Scale Parameter (ESP), the ESP 2 tool, and some segmentation evaluation methods have been introduced to simplify the choice of scale parameter (SP), shape, and compactness, many challenges remain, including obtaining the natural border of plastic greenhouses (PGs) from a GaoFen-2 (GF-2) fusion imagery, accelerating the progress of follow-up texture analysis, and accurately evaluating over-segmentation and under-segmentation of PG segments in geographic object-based image analysis. Considering the features of high-resolution images, the heterogeneity of fusion imagery was compressed using texture analysis before calculating the optimal scale parameter in ESP 2 in this study. As a result, we quantified the effects of image texture analysis, including increasing averaging operator size (AOS) and decreasing greyscale quantization level (GQL) on PG segments via recognition of a proposed Over-Segmentation Index (OSI)-Under-Segmentation Index (USI)-Error Index of Total Area (ETA)-Composite Error Index (CEI) pattern. The proposed pattern can be used to reasonably evaluate the quality of PG segments obtained from GF-2 fusion imagery and its derivative images, showing that appropriate texture analysis can effectively change the heterogeneity of a fusion image for better segmentation. Ultrasound B-scan images are traditionally formed from the envelope of the received radiofrequency echoes, but the image texture is dominated by granular speckle patterns. Longstanding efforts at speckle reduction and deconvolution have been developed to lessen the detrimental aspects of speckle. However, we now propose an alternative approach to estimation (and image rendering) of the underlying fine grain scattering density of tissues based on power law constraints. The key steps are a whitening of the spectrum of the received signal while conforming to the original envelope shape and statistics, followed by a power law filtering in accordance with the known scattering behavior of tissues. This multiple step approach results in a high-spatial-resolution map of scattering density that is constrained by the most important properties of scattering from tissues. The differences in sensor imaging mechanisms, observation angles, and scattering characteristics of terrestrial objects significantly limit the registration performance of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical heterologous images. Traditional methods particularly struggle in weak feature regions, such as harbors and islands with substantial water coverage, as well as in desolate areas like deserts. This paper introduces a robust heterologous image registration technique based on region-adaptive keypoint selection that integrates image texture features, targeting two pivotal aspects: feature point extraction and matching point screening. Initially, a dual threshold criterion based on block region information entropy and variance products effectively identifies weak feature regions. Subsequently, it constructs feature descriptors to generate similarity maps, combining histogram parameter skewness with non-maximum suppression (NMS) to enhance matching point accuracy. Extensive experiments have been conducted on conventional SAR-optical datasets and typical SAR-optical images with different weak feature regions to assess the method's performance. The findings indicate that this method successfully removes outliers in weak feature regions and completes the registration task of SAR and optical images with weak feature regions. The loop closure detection (LCD) methods in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Visual Inertial Navigation System (VINS) are often affected by issues such as insufficient image texture information and limited observational perspectives, resulting in constrained UAV positioning accuracy and reduced capability to perform complex tasks. This study proposes a Bag-of-Words (BoW) LCD method based on Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), which estimates camera poses from existing images and achieves rapid scene reconstruction through NeRF. A method is designed to select virtual viewpoints and render images along the flight trajectory using a specific sampling approach to expand the limited observational angles, mitigating the impact of image blur and insufficient texture information at specific viewpoints while enlarging the loop closure candidate frames to improve the accuracy and success rate of LCD. Additionally, a BoW vector construction method that incorporates the importance of similar visual words and an adapted virtual image filtering and comprehensive scoring calculation method are designed to determine loop closures. Applied to VINS-Mono and ORB-SLAM3, and compared with the advanced BoW model LCDs of the two systems, results indicate that the NeRF-based BoW LCD method can detect more than 48% additional accurate loop closures, while the system's navigation positioning error mean is reduced by over 46%, validating the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method and demonstrating its significant importance for improving the navigation accuracy of VINS. Plant diseases are one of the main reasons behind major economic and production losses in the agricultural field. Current research activities enable large fields monitoring and plant disease detection using innovative and robust technologies. French grapevines have a reputation for producing premium quality wines, however, these major fruit crops are susceptible to many diseases, including Esca, Downy mildew, Powdery mildew, Yellowing, and many others. In this study, we focused on two main infections (Esca and Yellowing), and data were gathered from fields that were located in Acquitaine and Burgundy regions, France. Since plant diseases can be diagnosed from the properties of the leaf, we acquired both Red-Green-Blue (RGB) digital image and hyperspectral reflectance data from infected and healthy leaves. Biophysical parameters that were produced by the PROSPECT model inversion together with texture parameters compiled from the literature were deduced. Then we investigated their relationship to damage caused by Yellowing and Esca. This study examined whether spectral and textural data can identify the two diseases through the use of Neural Networks. We obtained an overall accuracy of 99% for both of the diseases when textural and spectral data are combined. These results suggest that, first, biophysical parameters present a valid dimension reduction tool that could replace the use of complete hyperspectral data. Second, remote sensing using spectral reflectance and digital images can make an overall nondestructive, rapid, cost-effective, and reproducible technique to determine diseases in grapevines with a good level of accuracy. The image texture features obtained from 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) images of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have revealed tumor heterogeneity. A combination of genomic data and radiomics may improve the prediction of tumor prognosis. This study aimed to predict NSCLC metastasis using a graph neural network (GNN) obtained by combining a protein–protein interaction (PPI) network based on gene expression data and image texture features. 18F-FDG PET/CT images and RNA sequencing data of 93 patients with NSCLC were acquired from The Cancer Imaging Archive. Image texture features were extracted from 18F-FDG PET/CT images and area under the curve receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of each image feature was calculated. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to construct gene modules, followed by functional enrichment analysis and identification of differentially expressed genes. The PPI of each gene module and genes belonging to metastasis-related processes were converted via a graph attention network. Images and genomic features were concatenated. The GNN model using PPI modules from WGCNA and metastasis-related functions combined with image texture features was evaluated quantitatively. Fifty-five image texture features were extracted from 18F-FDG PET/CT, and radiomic features were selected based on AUC (n = 10). Eighty-six gene modules were clustered by WGCNA. Genes (n = 19) enriched in the metastasis-related pathways were filtered using DEG analysis. The accuracy of the PPI network, derived from WGCNA modules and metastasis-related genes, improved from 0.4795 to 0.5830 (p < 2.75 × 10−12). Integrating PPI of four metastasis-related genes with 18F-FDG PET/CT image features in a GNN model elevated its accuracy over a without image feature model to 0.8545 (95% CI = 0.8401–0.8689, p-value < 0.02). This model demonstrated significant enhancement compared to the model using PPI and 18F-FDG PET/CT derived from WGCNA (p-value < 0.02), underscoring the critical role of metastasis-related genes in prediction model. The enhanced predictive capability of the lymph node metastasis prediction GNN model for NSCLC, achieved through the integration of comprehensive image features with genomic data, demonstrates promise for clinical implementation. Image denoising, as an essential component of image pre-processing, effectively reduces noise interference to enhance image quality, a factor of considerable research importance. Traditional denoising methods often lead to the blurring of image details and a lack of realism at the image edges. To deal with these issues, we propose an image denoising algorithm named Residual structure and Cooperative Attention mechanism based on Generative Adversarial Networks (RCA-GAN). This algorithm proficiently reduces noise while focusing on preserving image texture details. To maximize feature extraction, this model first employs residual learning within a portion of the generator's backbone, conducting extensive multi-dimensional feature extraction to preserve a greater amount of image details. Secondly, it introduces a simple yet efficient cooperative attention module to enhance the representation capacity of edge and texture features, further enhancing the preservation of intricate image details. Finally, this paper constructs a novel loss function—the Multimodal Loss Function—for the network training process. The experimental results were evaluated using Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity (SSIM) as evaluation metrics. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed RCA-GAN image denoising algorithm has increased the average PSNR from 24.71 dB to 33.76 dB, achieving a 36.6% improvement. Additionally, the average SSIM value has risen from 0.8451 to 0.9503, indicating a 12.4% enhancement. Since Neural Radiation Field (NeRF) was first proposed, a large number of studies dedicated to them have emerged. These fields achieved very good results in their respective contexts, but they are not sufficiently practical for our project. If we want to obtain novel images of satellites photographed in space by another satellite, we must face problems like inaccurate camera focal lengths and poor image texture. There are also some small structures on satellites that NeRF-like algorithms cannot render well. In these cases, the NeRF's performance cannot sufficiently meet the project's needs. In fact, the images rendered by the NeRF will have many incomplete structures, while the MipNeRF will blur the edges of the structures on the satellite and obtain unrealistic colors. In response to these problems, we proposed STs-NeRF, which improves the quality of the new perspective images through an encoding module and a new network structure. We found a method for calculating poses that are suitable for our dataset and that enhance the network's input learning effect by recoding the sampling points and viewing directions through a dynamic encoding (DE) module. Then, we input them into our layer-by-layer normalized multi-layer perceptron (LLNMLP). By simultaneously inputting points and directions into the network, we avoid the mutual influence between light rays, and through layer-by-layer normalization, we ease the model's overfitting from a training perspective. Since real images should not be made public, we created a synthetic dataset and conducted a series of experiments. The experiments showed that our method achieves the best results in reconstructing captured satellite images, compared with the NeRF, the MipNeRF, the NeuS and the NeRF2Mesh, and improves the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) by 19%. Pasture degradation poses significant economic, social, and environmental impacts in the Brazilian savanna ecosystem. Despite these impacts, effectively detecting varying intensities of agronomic and biological degradation through remote sensing remains challenging. This study explores the potential of the eight-band PlanetScope SuperDove satellite constellation to discriminate between five classes of pasture degradation: non-degraded pasture (NDP); pastures with low- (LID) and moderate-intensity degradation (MID); severe agronomic degradation (SAD); and severe biological degradation (SBD). Using a set of 259 cloud-free images acquired in 2022 across five sites located in central Brazil, the study aims to: (i) identify the most suitable period for discriminating between various degradation classes; (ii) evaluate the Random Forest (RF) classification performance of different SuperDove attributes; and (iii) compare metrics of accuracy derived from two predicted scenarios of pasture degradation: a more challenging one involving five classes (NDP, LID, MID, SAD, and SBD), and another considering only non-degraded and severely degraded pastures (NDP, SAD, and SBD). The study assessed individual and combined sets of SuperDove attributes, including band reflectance, vegetation indices, endmember fractions from spectral mixture analysis (SMA), and image texture variables from Gray-level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). The results highlighted the effectiveness of the transition from the rainy to the dry season and the period towards the beginning of a new seasonal rainy cycle in October for discriminating pasture degradation. In comparison to the dry season, more favorable discrimination scenarios were observed during the rainy season. In the dry season, increased amounts of non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV) complicate the differentiation between NDP and SBD, which is characterized by high soil exposure. Pastures exhibiting severe biological degradation showed greater sensitivity to water stress, manifesting earlier reflectance changes in the visible and near-infrared bands of SuperDove compared to other classes. Reflectance-based classification yielded higher overall accuracy (OA) than the approaches using endmember fractions, vegetation indices, or texture metrics. Classifications using combined attributes achieved an OA of 0.69 and 0.88 for the five-class and three-class scenarios, respectively. In the five-class scenario, the highest F1-scores were observed for NDP (0.61) and classes of agronomic (0.71) and biological (0.88) degradation, indicating the challenges in separating low and moderate stages of pasture degradation. An initial comparison of RF classification results for the five categories of degraded pastures, utilizing reflectance data from MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI)/Sentinel-2 (400–2500 nm) and SuperDove (400–900 nm), demonstrated an enhanced OA (0.79 versus 0.66) with Sentinel-2 data. This enhancement is likely to be attributed to the inclusion of shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral bands in the data analysis. Faced with the problem of incompatibility between traditional information acquisition mode and spaceborne earth observation tasks, starting from the general mathematical model of compressed sensing, a theoretical model of block compressed sensing was established, and a full-process adaptive coding and decoding compressed sensing framework for remote sensing images was proposed, which includes five parts: mode selection, feature factor extraction, adaptive shape segmentation, adaptive sampling rate allocation and image reconstruction. Unlike previous semi-adaptive or local adaptive methods, the advantages of the adaptive encoding and decoding method proposed in this paper are mainly reflected in four aspects: (1) Ability to select encoding modes based on image content, and maximizing the use of the richness of the image to select appropriate sampling methods; (2) Capable of utilizing image texture details for adaptive segmentation, effectively separating complex and smooth regions; (3) Being able to detect the sparsity of encoding blocks and adaptively allocate sampling rates to fully explore the compressibility of images; (4) The reconstruction matrix can be adaptively selected based on the size of the encoding block to alleviate block artifacts caused by non-stationary characteristics of the image. Experimental results show that the method proposed in this article has good stability for remote sensing images with complex edge textures, with the peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity remaining above 35 dB and 0.8. Moreover, especially for ocean images with relatively simple image content, when the sampling rate is 0.26, the peak signal-to-noise ratio reaches 50.8 dB, and the structural similarity is 0.99. In addition, the recovered images have the smallest BRISQUE value, with better clarity and less distortion. In the subjective aspect, the reconstructed image has clear edge details and good reconstruction effect, while the block effect is effectively suppressed. The framework designed in this paper is superior to similar algorithms in both subjective visual and objective evaluation indexes, which is of great significance for alleviating the incompatibility between traditional information acquisition methods and satellite-borne earth observation missions. When an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) navigates in narrow waterway scenarios, its ability to detect vanishing points accurately and quickly is highly important for safeguarding its navigation safety and realizing automated navigation. We propose a novel approach for detecting vanishing points based on an improved lightweight AlexNet. First, a similarity evaluation calculation method based on image texture features is proposed, by which some scenarios are selected from the filtered Google Street Road Dataset (GSRD). These filtered scenarios, together with the USV Inland Dataset (USVID), compose the training dataset, which is manually labeled according to a non-uniformly distributed grid level. Next, the classical AlexNet was adjusted and optimized by constructing sequential connections of four convolutional layers and four pooling layers and incorporating the Inception A and Inception C structures in the first two convolutional layers. During model training, we formulate vanishing point detection as a classification problem using an output layer with 225 discrete possible vanishing point locations. Finally, we compare and analyze the labeled vanishing point with the detected vanishing point. The experimental results show that the accuracy of our method and the state-of-the-art algorithmic vanishing point detector improves, indicating that our improved lightweight AlexNet can be applied in narrow waterway navigation scenarios and can provide a technical reference for autonomous navigation of USVs. The determination of the optimal harvest date is very important to obtain the desired apple quality. This study was aimed at evaluating the impact of the harvest date on selected properties of the following red-fleshed apples: 'Alex Red', 'Trinity', and 'Roxana'. The color parameters of skin and flesh were measured using a portable spectrophotometer. The apple slices were imaged using a digital camera to extract flesh image textures. Then, the contents of chemical compounds, such as sugars, acids, and polyphenols were measured. Texture analysis is key to better understanding of the relationships between the microstructures of the materials and their properties, as well as the use of models in process systems using raw signals or images as input. Recently, new methods based on transfer learning with deep neural networks have become established as highly competitive approaches to classical texture analysis. In this study, three traditional approaches, based on the use of grey level co-occurrence matrices, local binary patterns and textons are compared with five transfer learning approaches, based on the use of AlexNet, VGG19, ResNet50, GoogLeNet and MobileNetV2. This is done based on two simulated and one real-world case study. In the simulated case studies, material microstructures were simulated with Voronoi graphic representations and in the real-world case study, the appearance of ultrahigh carbon steel is cast as a textural pattern recognition pattern. The ability of random forest models, as well as the convolutional neural networks themselves, to discriminate between different textures with the image features as input was used as the basis for comparison. The texton algorithm performed better than the LBP and GLCM algorithms and similar to the deep learning approaches when these were used directly, without any retraining. Partial or full retraining of the convolutional neural networks yielded considerably better results, with GoogLeNet and MobileNetV2 yielding the best results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the modern times of technological development, it is important to select adequate methods to support various food and industrial problems, including innovative techniques with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Effective analysis and the speed of algorithm implementation are key points in assessing the quality of food products. Non-invasive solutions are being sought to achieve high accuracy in the classification and evaluation of various food products. This paper presents various machine learning algorithm architectures to evaluate the efficiency of identifying blackcurrant powders (i.e., blackcurrant concentrate with a density of 67 °Brix and a color coefficient of 2.352 (E520/E420) in combination with the selected carrier) based on information encoded in microscopic images acquired via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Recognition of blackcurrant powders was performed using texture feature extraction from images aided by the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). It was evaluated for quality using individual single classifiers and a metaclassifier based on metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The research showed that the metaclassifier, as well as a single random forest (RF) classifier most effectively identified blackcurrant powders based on image texture features. This indicates that ensembles of classifiers in machine learning is an alternative approach to demonstrate better performance than the existing traditional solutions with single neural models. In the future, such solutions could be an important tool to support the assessment of the quality of food products in real time. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) are increasingly vital in precision agriculture, offering detailed, real-time insights into plant health across multiple spectral domains. Current image feature extraction methods fail to adapt to the fine features of apple image texture, resulting in image matching errors and degraded image processing accuracy. A multi-view orthogonal image acquisition system was constructed with apples as the research object. The system consists of four industrial cameras placed around the apple at different angles and one camera placed on top. Following the image acquisition through the system, synthetic image pairs—both before and after transformation—were generated as the input dataset. This generation process involved each image being subjected to random transformations. Through learning to extract more distinctive and descriptive features, the deep learning-based keypoint detection method surpasses traditional techniques by broadening the application range and enhancing detection accuracy. Therefore, a lightweight network called ALIKE-APPLE was proposed for surface feature point detection. The baseline model for ALIKE-APPLE is ALIKE, upon which improvements have been made to the image feature encoder and feature aggregation modules. It comprises an Improved Convolutional Attention Module (ICBAM) and a Boosting Resolution Sampling Module (BRSM). The proposed ICBAM replaced max pooling in the original image feature encoder for downsampling. It enhanced the feature fusion capability of the model by utilizing spatial contextual information and learning region associations in the image. The proposed BRSM replaced the bilinear interpolation in the original feature aggregator for upsampling, overcoming the apple side image's geometric distortion and effectively preserving the texture details and edge information. The model size was shrunk by optimizing the number of downsampling operations from the image encoder of the original model. The experimental results showed that the average number of observed keypoints and the average matching accuracy were improved by 166.41% and 37.07%, respectively, compared with the baseline model. The feature detection model of ALIKE-APPLE was found to perform better than the optimal SuperPoint. The feature point distribution of ALIKE-APPLE showed an improvement of 10.29% in average standard deviation (Std), 8.62% in average coefficient of variation (CV), and 156.12% in average feature point density (AFPD). Moreover, the mean matching accuracy (MMA) of ALIKE-APPLE improved by 125.97%. Thus, ALIKE-APPLE boasts a more consistent allocation of feature points and greater precision in matching. To obtain timely, accurate, and reliable information on wheat yield dynamics. The UAV DJI Wizard 4-multispectral version was utilized to acquire multispectral images of winter wheat during the tasseling, grouting, and ripening periods, and to manually acquire ground yield data. Sixteen vegetation indices were screened by correlation analysis, and eight textural features were extracted from five single bands in three fertility periods. Subsequently, models for estimating winter wheat yield were developed utilizing multiple linear regression (MLR), partial least squares (PLS), BP neural network (BPNN), and random forest regression (RF), respectively. (1) The results indicated a consistent correlation between the two variable types and yield across various fertility periods. This correlation consistently followed a sequence: heading period > filling period > mature stage. (2) The model's accuracy improves significantly when incorporating both texture features and vegetation indices for estimation, surpassing the accuracy achieved through the estimation of a single variable type. (3) Among the various models considered, the partial least squares (PLS) model integrating texture features and vegetation indices exhibited the highest accuracy in estimating winter wheat yield. It achieved a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.852, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 74.469 kg·hm−2, and a normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 7.41%. This study validates the significance of utilizing image texture features along with vegetation indices to enhance the accuracy of models estimating winter wheat yield. It demonstrates that UAV multispectral images can effectively establish a yield estimation model. Dried red-fleshed apples are considered a promising high-quality product from the functional foods category. The objective of this study was to compare the flesh features of freeze-dried red-fleshed apples belonging to the 'Alex Red', 'Trinity', '314', and '602' genotypes and indicate which parameters and shapes of dried samples are the most useful to distinguish apple genotypes. Apple samples were at the stage of harvest maturity. The average fruit weight, starch index, internal ethylene concentration, flesh firmness, total soluble sugar content, and titratable acidity were determined. One hundred apple slices with a thickness of 4 mm and one hundred cubes with dimensions of 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm of each genotype were subjected to freeze-drying. For each apple sample (slice or cube), 2172 image texture parameters were extracted from images in 12 color channels, and color parameters L*, a*, and b* were determined. The classification models were developed based on a set of selected image textures and a set of combined selected image textures and color parameters of freeze-dried apple slices and cubes using various traditional machine-learning algorithms. Models built based on selected textures of slice images in 11 selected color channels correctly classified freeze-dried red-fleshed apple genotypes with an overall accuracy reaching 90.25% and mean absolute error of 0.0545; by adding selected color parameters (L*, b*) to models, an increase in the overall accuracy to 91.25% and a decrease in the mean absolute error to 0.0486 were observed. The classification of apple cube images using models including selected texture parameters from images in 11 selected color channels was characterized by an overall accuracy of up to 74.74%; adding color parameters (L*, a*, b*) to models resulted in an increase in the overall accuracy to 80.50%. The greatest mixing of cases was observed between 'Alex Red' and 'Trinity' as well as '314' and '602' apple slices and cubes. The developed models can be used in practice to distinguish freeze-dried red-fleshed apples in a non-destructive and objective manner. It can avoid mixing samples belonging to different genotypes with different chemical properties. Further studies can focus on using deep learning in addition to traditional machine learning to build models to distinguish dried red-fleshed apple samples. Moreover, other drying techniques can be applied, and image texture parameters and color features can be used to predict the changes in flesh structure and estimate the chemical properties of dried samples. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a fundamental indicator of plant growth status in agronomy and environmental research. With the rapid development of drone technology, the estimation of crop LAI based on drone imagery and vegetation indices is becoming increasingly popular. However, there is still a lack of detailed research on the feasibility of using image texture to estimate LAI and the impact of combining texture indices with vegetation indices on LAI estimation accuracy. In this study, two key growth stages of winter wheat (i.e., the stages of green-up and jointing) were selected, and LAI was calculated using digital hemispherical photography. The feasibility of predicting winter wheat LAI was explored under three conditions: vegetation index, texture index, and a combination of vegetation index and texture index, at flight heights of 20 m and 40 m. Two feature selection methods (Lasso and recursive feature elimination) were combined with four machine learning regression models (multiple linear regression, random forest, support vector machine, and backpropagation neural network). The results showed that during the vegetative growth stage of winter wheat, the model combining texture information with vegetation indices performed better than the models using vegetation indices alone or texture information alone. Among them, the best prediction result based on vegetation index was RFECV-MLR at a flight height of 40 m (R2 = 0.8943, RMSE = 0.4139, RRMSE = 0.1304, RPD = 3.0763); the best prediction result based on texture index was RFECV-RF at a flight height of 40 m (R2 = 0.8894, RMSE = 0.4236, RRMSE = 0.1335, RPD = 3.0063); and the best prediction result combining texture and index was RFECV-RF at a flight height of 40 m (R2 = 0.9210, RMSE = 0.3579, RRMSE = 0.1128, RPD = 3.5575). The results of this study demonstrate that combining vegetation indices and texture from multispectral drone imagery can improve the accuracy of LAI estimation during the vegetative growth stage of winter wheat. In addition, selecting a flight height of 40 m can improve efficiency in large-scale agricultural field monitoring, as this study showed that drone data at flight heights of 20 m and 40 m did not significantly affect model accuracy. Soil organic matter is an important component that reflects soil fertility and promotes plant growth. The soil of typical Chinese tea plantations was used as the research object in this work, and by combining soil hyperspectral data and image texture characteristics, a quantitative prediction model of soil organic matter based on machine vision and hyperspectral imaging technology was built. Three methods, standard normalized variate (SNV), multisource scattering correction (MSC), and smoothing, were first used to preprocess the spectra. After that, random frog (RF), variable combination population analysis (VCPA), and variable combination population analysis and iterative retained information variable (VCPA-IRIV) algorithms were used to extract the characteristic bands. Finally, the quantitative prediction model of nonlinear support vector regression (SVR) and linear partial least squares regression (PLSR) for soil organic matter was established by combining nine color features and five texture features of hyperspectral images. The outcomes demonstrate that, in comparison to single spectral data, fusion data may greatly increase the performance of the prediction model, with MSC + VCPA-IRIV + SVR (R2C = 0.995, R2P = 0.986, RPD = 8.155) being the optimal approach combination. The fractional differential algorithm has a good effect on extracting image textures, but it is usually necessary to select an appropriate fractional differential order for textures of different scales, so we propose a novel approach for haptic texture rendering of two-dimensional (2D) images by using an adaptive fractional differential method. According to the fractional differential operator defined by the Grünvald–Letnikov derivative (G–L) and combined with the characteristics of human vision, we propose an adaptive fractional differential method based on the composite sub-band gradient vector of the sub-image obtained by wavelet decomposition of the image texture. We apply these extraction results to the haptic display system to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) texture force filed to render the texture surface of two-dimensional (2D) images. Based on this approach, we carry out the quantitative analysis of the haptic texture rendering of 2D images by using the multi-scale structural similarity (MS-SSIM) and image information entropy. Complexity is one of the major attributes of the visual perception of texture. However, very little is known about how humans visually interpret texture complexity. A psychophysical experiment was conducted to visually quantify the seven texture attributes of a series of textile fabrics: complexity, color variation, randomness, strongness, regularity, repetitiveness, and homogeneity. It was found that the observers could discriminate between the textures with low and high complexity using some high-level visual cues such as randomness, color variation, strongness, etc. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) on the visual scores of the above attributes suggest that complexity and homogeneity could be essentially the underlying attributes of the same visual texture dimension, with complexity at the negative extreme and homogeneity at the positive extreme of this dimension. We chose to call this dimension visual texture complexity. Several texture measures including the first-order image statistics, co-occurrence matrix, local binary pattern, and Gabor features were computed for images of the textiles in sRGB, and four luminance-chrominance color spaces (i.e., HSV, YCbCr, Ohta's I1I2I3, and CIELAB). The relationships between the visually quantified texture complexity of the textiles and the corresponding texture measures of the images were investigated. Analyzing the relationships showed that simple standard deviation of the image luminance channel had a strong correlation with the corresponding visual ratings of texture complexity in all five color spaces. Standard deviation of the energy of the image after convolving with an appropriate Gabor filter and entropy of the co-occurrence matrix, both computed for the image luminance channel, also showed high correlations with the visual data. In this comparison, sRGB, YCbCr, and HSV always outperformed the I1I2I3 and CIELAB color spaces. The highest correlations between the visual data and the corresponding image texture features in the luminance-chrominance color spaces were always obtained for the luminance channel of the images, and one of the two chrominance channels always performed better than the other. This result indicates that the arrangement of the image texture elements that impacts the observer's perception of visual texture complexity cannot be represented properly by the chrominance channels. This must be carefully considered when choosing an image channel to quantify the visual texture complexity. Additionally, the good performance of the luminance channel in the five studied color spaces proves that variations in the luminance of the texture, or as one could call the luminance contrast, plays a crucial role in creating visual texture complexity. The identification of sedimentary structures in lithofacies is of great significance to the exploration and development of Paleogene shale in the Boxing Sag. However, due to the scale mismatch between the thickness of laminae and the vertical resolution of conventional wireline logs, the conventional lithofacies division method fails to realize the accurate classification of sedimentary structures and cannot meet the needs of reservoir research. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a lithofacies identification method with higher precision from advanced logs. In this paper, a method integrating the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and random forest (RF) algorithms is proposed to classify shale lithofacies with different sedimentary structures based on formation micro-imager (FMI) imaging logging and elemental capture spectroscopy (ECS) logging. According to the characteristics of shale laminae on FMI images, GLCM, an image texture extraction tool, is utilized to obtain texture features reflecting sedimentary structures from FMI images. It is proven that GLCM can depict shale sedimentary structures efficiently and accurately, and four texture features (contrast, entropy, energy, and homogeneity) are sensitive to shale sedimentary structures. To accommodate the correlation between the four texture features, the random forest algorithm, which has been proven not to be affected by correlated input features, is selected for supervised lithofacies classification. To enhance the model's ability to differentiate between argillaceous limestone and calcareous mudstone, the carbonate content and clay content calculated from the ECS logs are involved in the input features. Moreover, grid search cross-validation (CV) is implemented to optimize the hyperparameters of the model. The optimized model achieves favorable performance on training data, validation data, and test data, with average accuracies of 0.84, 0.79, and 0.76, respectively. In order to obtain high-quality images, the application of low-illumination image enhancement techniques plays a vital role in enhancing the overall visual appeal. However, it is particularly difficult to enhance an image while maintaining the original information of the scene. The augmentation method based on Retinex theory is widely considered as one of the representative techniques for such problems, but this method still has some limitations. First of all, noise is easily ignored in the process of model building, and the robustness of the model needs to be improved. Secondly, the image decomposition is less effective, so that part of the image information is not effectively presented. Finally, the optimization procedure is computationally complicated. This paper introduces a novel approach for enhancing low-illumination images by utilizing the relative deviation of local gradients. The proposed method aims to address the challenges associated with low-illumination images and offers a solution to these issues. In this paper, local gradient relative deviation is used as a constraint term and a noise term is added to highlight the image texture and structure and improve the robustness of the models, considering that L P achieves piecewise smoothing with better sparsity compared to the sum norm commonly used by L 1 and L 2 norms. In this paper, the L 2 − L P norm is used to constrain the model, which smooths the illumination component and better preserves the details of the reflectance component. In addition, to efficiently solve the optimization problem, the alternating direction multiplier method is chosen to transform the optimization process into the solution of several sub-problems. In comparison to traditional Retinex models, the proposed method excels in its ability to simultaneously enhance the image and suppress noise effectively. The experimental outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in enhancing both simulated and real data.
