In this paper, to track maneuvering unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in scenarios with clutter, we propose a novel method based on the probabilistic data association (PDA) algorithm and Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) algorithm, and we further improve the tracking performance by Max-Q criterion-based waveform selection. This work develops a maneuvering target model in the context of clutter, integrating linear and nonlinear states as well as observations with false alarms. In order to jointly tackle the mixed-state tracking problem, the PDA algorithm is integrated into the RBPF framework. This allows it to be used with the complex nonlinear and linear hybrid system and helps to minimize the state dimensions of conventional particle filtering (PF). Additionally, by utilizing Q-learning principles, we provide a Max-Q-based criterion to select the waveform parameters, which guarantees low measurement errors and efficiently handles measurement uncertainties. Our simulation results show that the PDA-RBPF algorithm, which has a more appropriate tracking mechanism, produces results that are more accurate than those of the EKF or PF algorithms alone. Furthermore, the RMSE derived by the Max-Q-based criterion is smaller and more robust than that of other selection methods, as well as yielding a fixed waveform. Our proposed mechanism, which combines the concepts of PDA-RBPF and Max-Q waveform selection, performs well in target tracking tasks and exhibits relatively good performance over some existing ones. In this paper, we address the problem of covariance matrix estimation for radar adaptive detection under non-Gaussian clutter. Traditional model-based estimators may suffer from performance loss due to the mismatch between real data and assumed models. Therefore, we resort to a data-driven deep-learning method and propose a covariance matrix estimation method based on a complex-valued convolutional neural network (CV-CNN). Moreover, a real-valued (RV) network with the same framework as the proposed CV network is also constructed to serve as a natural competitor. The obtained clutter covariance matrix estimation based on the network is applied to the adaptive normalized matched filter (ANMF) detector for performance assessment. The detection results via both simulated and real sea clutter illustrate that the estimator based on CV-CNN outperforms other traditional model-based estimators as well as its RV competitor in terms of probability of detection (PD). Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) is an important method of clutter suppression that requires adequate training samples. For an airborne conformal array radar, conventional STAP methods do not have enough training samples to acquire good performance due to the range dependent clutter caused by geometry and the problem of polarization. Sparse-recovery-based STAP (SR-STAP) methods have garnered significant attention in the past few decades because they only require a small number of training samples. Sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) methods have seen increasing amounts of development due to its robust, self-regularizing nature and because it is not sensitive to user parameters, but it converges slowly. In this paper, a novel fast SBL (NFSBL) method is put forward to increase the rate of convergence. To minimize the SBL penalty function, the proposed method introduces the conjugate function to construct a surrogate function. Additional solution sparsity will be achieved through iteratively minimizing the surrogate function. Then, from the proposed method, we could obtain a more accurate clutter plus noise covariance matrix. Numerical simulation results express that this method could acquire better performance of STAP and improvement in convergence and computational complexity for a conformal array. In this paper, the design of low probability of intercept (LPI) radar waveforms considers not only the performance of passive interception systems (PISs), but also radar detection and resolution performance. Waveform design is an important considerations for the LPI ability of radar. Since information theory has a powerful performance-bound description ability from the perspective of information flow, LPI waveforms are designed in this paper within the constraints of the detection performance metrics of radar and PISs, both of which are measured by the Kullback–Leibler divergence, and the resolution performance metric, which is measured by joint entropy. The designed optimization model of LPI waveforms can be solved using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. Simulation results verify that the designed LPI waveforms not only have satisfactory target-detecting and resolution performance, but also have a superior low interception performance against PISs. Range-ambiguous clutter is an inevitable issue for airborne forward-looking array radars, especially with the high pulse repetition frequency (PRF). In this paper, a method to suppress the range-ambiguous clutter is proposed in an FDA-MIMO radar with a forward-looking planar array. Compressed sensing FDA technology is used to suppress the range-ambiguous clutter and the forward-looking non-uniformity short-range clutter of radar. Specifically, first, the range ambiguous clutter in different regions is separated by the characteristics of the planar array radar elevation dimension and FDA radar range coupling. Meanwhile, regarding the issue of the FDA radar main lobe moving between coherent pulses, a main lobe correction (MLC) algorithm proposes a solution for the issue, where the FDA radar cannot coherently accumulate signals in the case of non-full angle illumination. Finally, compressed sensing technology and elevation dimension filtering are utilized to suppress the range ambiguous clutter at the receiver, with the approach alleviating the range dependence of clutter in the observation region. A small number of clutter snapshots can obtain an approximately ideal clutter covariance matrix through compressed sensing sparse recovery. The method not only reduces the number of training samples, but also overcomes the problem of clutter non-uniformity in the forward-looking array. Therefore, the clutter suppression problems faced by the high repetition frequency airborne radar forward-looking array structure are solved. At the analysis stage, a comparison among the conventional MIMO and FDA methods is carried on by analyzing the improvement factor (IF) curves. Ideal transmitting and receiving (Tx/Rx) array response is always desirable in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In practice, nevertheless, Tx/Rx arrays may be susceptible to unknown gain-phase errors (GPE) and yield seriously decreased positioning accuracy. This paper focuses on the direction-of-departure (DOD) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) problem in bistatic MIMO radar with unknown gain-phase errors (GPE). A novel parallel factor (PARAFAC) estimator is proposed. The factor matrices containing DOD and DOA are firstly obtained via PARAFAC decomposition. One DOD-DOA pair estimation is then accomplished from the spectrum searching. Thereafter, the remainder DOD and DOA are achieved by the least squares technique with the previous estimated angle pair. The proposed estimator is analyzed in detail. It only requires one instrumental Tx/Rx sensor, and it outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms. The problem of detecting point like targets over a glistening surface is investigated in this manuscript, and the design of an optimal waveform through a two-step process for a multipath exploitation radar is proposed. In the first step, a non-adaptive waveform is transmitted and a constrained Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) detector is deduced at reception which exploits multipath returns in the range cell under test by modelling the target echo as a superposition of the direct plus the multipath returns. Under the hypothesis of heterogeneous environments, thus by assuming a compound-Gaussian distribution for the clutter return, this latter is estimated in the range cell under test through the secondary data, which are collected from the out-of-bin cells. The Fixed Point Estimate (FPE) algorithm is applied in the clutter estimation, then used to design the adaptive waveform for transmission in the second step of the algorithm, in order to suppress the clutter coming from the adjacent cells. The proposed GLRT is also used at the end of the second transmission for the final decision. Extensive performance evaluation of the proposed detector and adaptive waveform for various multipath scenarios is presented. The performance analysis prove that the proposed method improves the Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR) of the received signal, and the detection performance with multipath exploitation. Noise Radar technology is the general term used to describe radar systems that employ realizations of a given stochastic process as transmit waveforms. Originally, carriers modulated in amplitude by a Gaussian random signal, derived from a hardware noise source, were taken into consideration, justifying the adopted nomenclature. With the advances made in hardware as well as the rise of the software defined noise radar concept, waveform design emerges as an important research area related to such systems. The possibility of generating signals with varied stochastic properties increased the potential in achieving systems with enhanced performances. The characterization of random phase and frequency modulated waveforms (more suitable for several applications) has then gained considerable notoriety within the radar community as well. Several optimization algorithms have been proposed in order to conveniently shape both the autocorrelation function of the random samples that comprise the transmit signal, as well as their power spectrum density. Nevertheless, little attention has been driven to properly characterize the stochastic properties of those signals through closed form expressions, jeopardizing the effectiveness of the aforementioned algorithms as well as their reproducibility. This study investigates the information–theoretic waveform design problem to improve radar performance in the presence of signal-dependent clutter environments. The goal was to study the waveform energy allocation strategies and provide guidance for radar waveform design through the trade-off relationship between the information theory criterion and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) criterion. To this end, a model of the constraint relationship among the mutual information (MI), the Kullback–Leibler divergence (KLD), and the SINR is established in the frequency domain. The effects of the SINR value range on maximizing the MI and KLD under the energy constraint are derived. Under the constraints of energy and the SINR, the optimal radar waveform method based on maximizing the MI is proposed for radar estimation, with another method based on maximizing the KLD proposed for radar detection. The maximum MI value range is bounded by SINR and the maximum KLD value range is between 0 and the Jenson–Shannon divergence (J-divergence) value. Simulation results show that under the SINR constraint, the MI-based optimal signal waveform can make full use of the transmitted energy to target information extraction and put the signal energy in the frequency bin where the target spectrum is larger than the clutter spectrum. The KLD-based optimal signal waveform can therefore make full use of the transmitted energy to detect the target and put the signal energy in the frequency bin with the maximum target spectrum. Height detection of a low elevation angle target is crucial in radar applications. Due to the presence of the multiple path reflections, elevation angle estimation is difficult with conventional narrowband radar waveforms. The reflection ground area parameters are especially hard to obtain for modeling. In this paper, we proposed a wideband, low elevation angle estimator based on range super-resolution, achieving a high robustness to variations in reflection coefficients. A relaxation (RELAX) algorithm was applied as the range super-resolution algorithm to separate the direct target echo and the reflected signal thanks to the relatively abundant frequency diversity. The grazing angle was obtained by synthesizing the steering vector of the direct signal and the range structure relationship between the two signal components. In this paper, a joint diagonalization based two dimensional (2D) direction of departure (DOD) and 2D direction of arrival (DOA) estimation method for a mixture of circular and strictly noncircular (NC) sources is proposed based on an L-shaped bistatic multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar. By making full use of the L-shaped MIMO array structure to obtain an extended virtual array at the receive array, we first combine the received data vector and its conjugated counterpart to construct a new data vector, and then an estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT)-like method is adopted to estimate the DODs and DOAs by joint diagonalization of the NC-based direction matrices, which can automatically pair the four dimensional (4D) angle parameters and solve the angle ambiguity problem with common one-dimensional (1D) DODs and DOAs. In addition, the asymptotic performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed and the closed-form stochastic Cramer–Rao bound (CRB) expression is derived. In order to reduce power consumption and save storage capacity, we propose a high-resolution sub-Nyquist radar approach based on matrix completion (MC), termed as single-channel sub-Nyquist-MC radars. While providing the high-resolution joint angle-Doppler estimation, this proposed radar approach minimizes the number of samples in all three dimensions, that is, the range dimension, the pulse dimension (also named temporal dimension), and the spatial dimension. In range dimension, we use a single-channel analog-to-information converter (AIC) to reduce the number of range samples to one; in both spatial and temporal dimensions, we employ a bank of random switch units to regulate the AICs, which greatly reduce the number of spatial-temporal samples. According to the proposed sampling scheme, the samples in digital processing center forwarded by M receive nodes and N pulses are only a subset of the full matrix of size M times N. Under certain conditions and with the knowledge of the sampling scheme, the full matrix can be perfectly recovered by using MC techniques. Based on the recovered full matrix, this paper addresses the problem of the high-resolution joint angle-Doppler estimation by employing compressed sensing (CS) techniques.
