Sulfate is a typical characteristic pollutant in mine water. Because of its high concentration and large discharge of mine water, it has become a difficult problem in mineral exploitation. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an innovative and economical removal technology. There are few reports on the use of CDI to remove SO42− from mine water. In this study, a CeO2 activated carbon electrode with good wettability, excellent electrochemical performance, and suitable pore structure was prepared by the sol-gel method. The application of the CeO2 activated carbon electrode to the capacitive method for treating high SO42− mine water was investigated using simulated wastewater and actual mine water. The study structure shows that CeO2:activated carbon (AC) has the best wettability, the highest specific capacitance, and the lowest electrical conductivity when the mass ratio of CeO2 is 5%. At 100 mg/L, the electrode has the maximum SO42− ion specific adsorption capacity (SAC). At 1 V and 20 mL/min, this value is measured. The electrode has a SAC value of 9.36 mg/g, far higher than the AC electrode's 4.1 mg/g. The effect of CDI process factors such the voltage, flow rate, and initial concentration was studied to find the best treatment method. SAC retention is 91% after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating outstanding electrode performance. Under the best CDI process (1.4 volts, 30 mL/min), mine water was treated. After 20 cycles of treatment, the concentration of SO42− in mine water decreased from 1170 mg/L to 276.46 mg/L, and the removal rate was 76.37%. In this work, a new voltammetric procedure for acyclovir (ACY) trace-level determination has been described. For this purpose, an electrochemically activated screen-printed carbon electrode (aSPCE) coupled with well-conductive electrolyte (CH3COONH4, CH3COOH and NH4Cl) was used for the first time. A commercially available SPCE sensor was electrochemically activated by conducting cyclic voltammetry (CV) scans in 0.1 mol L−1 NaOH solution and rinsed with deionized water before a series of measurements were taken. This treatment reduced the charge transfer resistance, increased the electrode active surface area and improved the kinetics of the electron transfer. The activation step and high conductivity of supporting electrolyte significantly improved the sensitivity of the procedure. The newly developed differential-pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry (DPAdSV) procedure is characterized by having the lowest limit of detection among all voltammetric procedures currently described in the literature (0.12 nmol L−1), a wide linear range of the calibration curve (0.5–50.0 and 50.0–1000.0 nmol L−1) as well as extremely high sensitivity (90.24 nA nmol L−1) and was successfully applied in the determination of acyclovir in commercially available pharmaceuticals. The development of efficient energy storage systems is critical in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. In this context, the present work investigates the viability of using orange juice, as a promising and sustainable precursor, for the synthesis of activated carbon electrodes for supercapacitor technologies. Through the carbonization-activation process and controlling the preparation parameters (KOH ratio and activation time), we have tailored the specific surface area (SSA) and pore size distribution (PSD) of the resulting carbon materials—crucial parameters that support supercapacitive performance. Several spectroscopic, morphological, and electrochemical techniques are used to characterize the obtained carbon materials. In particular, our optimization efforts revealed that a 5:1 KOH ratio with an activation time up to 120 min produced the highest SSA of about 2203 m2/g. Employing these optimal conditions, we fabricated symmetric coin cell supercapacitors using Na2SO4 as the electrolyte, which exhibited interesting specific capacitance (~56 F/g). Durability testing over 5000 cycles sustained the durability of the as-made activated carbon electrodes, suggesting an excellent retention of specific capacitance. This study not only advances the field of energy storage by introducing a renewable material for electrode fabrication but also contributes to the broader goal of waste reduction through the repurposing of food byproducts. Strategically upcycling industrial wastes such as petroleum coke and dye wastewater into value-added materials through scalable and economic processes is an effective way to simultaneously tackle energy and environmental issues. Doping carbon electrodes with heteroatoms proves effective in significantly enhancing electrochemical performance through alterations in electrode wettability and electrical conductivity. This work reports the use of dye wastewater as the sole dopant source to synthesize N and S co-doped petroleum coke-based activated carbon (NS-AC) by the one-step pyrolysis method. More importantly, our wastewater and petroleum coke-derived activated carbon produced on a large scale (20 kg/batch) shows a specific surface area of 2582 m2 g−1 and an energy density of about 95 Wh kg−1 in a soft-packaged full cell with 1 M TEATFB/PC as the electrolyte. The scalable production method, together with the green and sustainable process, can be easily adopted and scaled by industry without the need for complex processes and/or units, which offers a convenient and green route to produce functionalized carbons from wastes at a low cost. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising and cost-effective technology that is currently being widely explored for removing dissolved ions from saline water. This research developed materials based on activated carbon (AC) materials modified with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods and used them as high-performance CDI electrodes for water desalination. The as-prepared electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, and their physical properties were studied through SEM and XRD. ZnO-coated AC electrodes revealed a better specific absorption capacity (SAC) and an average salt adsorption rate (ASAR) compared to pristine AC, specifically with values of 123.66 mg/g and 5.06 mg/g/min, respectively. The desalination process was conducted using a 0.4 M sodium chloride (NaCl) solution with flow rates from 45 mL/min to 105 mL/min under an applied potential of 1.2 V. Furthermore, the energy efficiency of the desalination process, the specific energy consumption (SEC), and the maximum and minimum of the effluent solution concentration were quantified using thermodynamic energy efficiency (TEE). Magnetic activated carbon particles (Fe3O4/active carbon composites) as auxiliary electrodes (AEs) were fixed on the surface of Ti/Sb-SnO2 foil by a NdFeB magnet to form a new magnetically assembled electrode (MAE). Characterizations including cyclic voltammetry, Tafel analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were carried out. The electrochemical oxidation performances of the new MAE towards different simulated wastewaters (azo dye acid red G, phenol, and lignosulfonate) were also studied. Series of the electrochemical properties of MAE were found to be varied with the loading amounts of AEs. The electrochemical area as well as the number of active sites increased significantly with the AEs loading, and the charge transfer was also facilitated by these AEs. Target pollutants' removal of all simulated wastewaters were found to be enhanced when loading appropriate amounts of AEs. The accumulation of intermediate products was also determined by the AEs loading amount. In this study, carbon aerogels (CAs) were synthesized by the sol-gel method, using environmentally friendly glucose as a precursor, and then they were further activated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to obtain activated carbon aerogels (ACAs). After the activation, the electrochemical performance of the ACAs was significantly improved, and the specific capacitance increased from 19.70 F·g−1 to 111.89 F·g−1. Moreover, the ACAs showed a stronger hydrophilicity with the contact angle of 118.54° compared with CAs (69.31°). When used as an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), the ACAs had not only a better diffuse electric double layer behavior, but also a lower charge transfer resistance and intrinsic resistance. Thus, the ACA electrode had a faster CDI desalination rate and a higher desalination capacity. The unit adsorption capacity is three times larger than that of the CA electrode. In the desalination experiment of 100 mg·L−1 sodium chloride (NaCl) solution using a CDI device based on the ACA electrode, the optimal electrode spacing was 2 mm, the voltage was 1.4 V, and the flow rate was 30 mL·min−1. When the NaCl concentration was 500 mg·L−1, the unit adsorption capacity of the ACA electrode reached 26.12 mg·g−1, much higher than that which has been reported in many literatures. The desalination process followed the Langmuir model, and the electro-sorption of the NaCl was a single layer adsorption process. One of the global problems is environmental pollution by different biowaste. To solve the problem, biowaste must be recycled. Waste-free technology is also a way of saving exhaustible raw materials. Research on electrochemical energy sources is currently the most dynamically developing area of off-grid energy. Electrochemical capacitors can operate for a long time without changing performance, they have smaller dimensions, high mechanical strength, and a wide operating temperature range. These properties are effective energy-saving devices. Therefore, supercapacitors are widely used in various industries. This review discussed the methods of obtaining and the characteristics of biowaste-derived activated carbon and carbon–manganese oxide (AC-MnO2)-based supercapacitor electrodes. A kenaf-derived activated carbon (KAC) for a high-power density supercapacitor was developed in this study through phosphoric acid activation. The N2/77K isothermal adsorption–desorption curve was used to estimate the textural properties of KAC based on BET and BJH and the pore size distribution based on NLDFT. The electrochemical properties of KAC were analyzed by using the coin-type cell applying 1 M SPBBF4/PC electrolyte, and the specific surface area and total pore volume were 1490–1942 m2/g and 1.18–3.18 cm3/g, respectively. The pore characteristics of KAC varied according to the activation temperature, and most KAC showed a mesoporous structure. As the activation temperature increased, the mesopore volume increased up to 700 °C, then decreased. The mesoporous structure of KAC resulted in a substantial decrease in the Warburg impedance as the ion diffusion resistance decreased. Hence, the specific capacitance of KAC decreased from 82.9 F/g to 59.48 F/g as the charge–discharge rate increased from 1 mA/g to 10 mA/g, with the rate of reduction at approximately 30%. The rate of reduction of KAC's specific capacitance was 50% lower compared with commercial activated carbon; hence, KAC is a more suitable electrode-active material for high power density supercapacitors. Freshwater reserves are being polluted every day due to the industrial revolution. Man-made activities have adverse effects upon the ecosystem. It is thus the hour of need to explore newer technologies to save and purify water for the growing human population. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is being considered as an emerging technique for removal of excess ions to produce potable water including desalination. Herein, cost-effective activated carbon incorporated with carbon nanotubes (CNT) was used as a freestanding electrode. Further, the desalination efficiency of the designed electrodes was tuned by varying binder concentration, i.e., polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) in the activated carbon powder and CNT mixture. PVDF concentration of 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 wt% was selected to optimize the freestanding electrode formation and further applied for desalination of water. PVDF content affected the surface morphology, specific surface area, and functional groups of the freestanding electrodes. Moreover, the electrical conductivity and specific surface area changed with PVDF concentration, which ultimately affected the desalination capacity using the freestanding electrodes. Electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are an excellent electrochemical energy storage system (ESS) because of their superior power density, faster charge–discharge ability, and longer cycle life compared to those of other EES systems. Activated carbons (ACs) have been mainly used as the electrode materials for EDLCs because of their high specific surface area, superior chemical stability, and low cost. Petroleum pitch (PP) is a graphitizable carbon that is a promising precursor for ACs because of its high carbon content, which is obtained as an abundant by-product during the distillation of petroleum. However, the processibility of PP is poor because of its stable structure. In this study, pre-oxidized PP-derived AC (OPP-AC) was prepared to investigate the effects of pre-oxidation on the electrochemical behaviors of PP. The specific surface area and pore size distribution of OPP-AC were lower and narrower, respectively, compared to the textural properties of untreated PP-derived AC (PP-AC). On the other hand, the specific capacitance of OPP-AC was 25% higher than that of PP-AC. These results revealed that pre-oxidation of PP induces a highly developed micropore structure of ACs, resulting in improved electrochemical performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the effect of hydrogen ions on the adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC) with the inorganic contaminant phosphate, which exists as a form of four species depending on the solution pH, is investigated. Various batch isotherm and kinetic experiments were conducted in an initial pH 4 as an acid, a pH 7 as neutral, and a pH 9 solution as a base for the GAC conditioned with deionized water and hydrochloric acid, referred to as GAC and GACA, respectively. The physical properties, such as the total surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and weight of the element, obtained from Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM–EDX) represent no significant differences. However, the hydrochloric acid (HCl) condition results in an alteration of the pH of the point of zero charge from 4.5 to 6.0. The optimized initial pH was determined as being acid for the GAC and as being neutral for the GACA. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the relatively high Qm was obtained as being acid for the GAC and clearly distinguishes the pH effect as being the base for the GACA. An attempt was made to assess the adsorption mechanism using the pseudo-first-order (PFO), the pseudo-second-order (PSO), and the intraparticle diffusion models. The higher R2 for the PSO in the entire pH range indicated that chemisorption was predominant for phosphate adsorption, and the pH did not change the adsorption mechanism. A prolonged Bed Volume (BV) for the GACA demonstrated that the hydrogen ions on the surface of the GAC enhanced phosphate adsorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is a modification of capacitive deionization (CDI) using ion-exchange membranes (IEM) in front of the electrodes. Electrode properties, especially the specific surface area, are known to be strongly related with desalination performance in CDI, but the effects of other properties in MCDI are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrophilicity in activated carbon electrodes on desalination performance in MCDI. Two types of activated carbon (P60 and YS-2) whose specific surface areas were similar were used as electrode materials, but they had different hydrophilicity (i.e., P60 was originally hydrophobic and YS-2 was relatively hydrophilic due to its nitrogen-containing surface chemistry). These hydrophilic electrodes (either the electrode itself or modified with polydopamine (PDA)) led to an increase in the salt adsorption capacity (SAC) in MCDI because they facilitated the access of both ions and water molecules into the electrode pores. In particular, the SAC of the P60 electrode displayed a large increase to almost reach that of the YS-2 electrode due to the improved hydrophilicity with PDA modification and the insignificant effects of PDA modification on an already hydrophilic YS-2 electrode. Additionally, PDA-modified IEM in MCDI reduced the SAC as a result of the additional insulating PDA layer with little changes in hydrophilicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Activated carbons (AC) from lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks are used in a broad range of applications, especially for electrochemical devices such as supercapacitor electrodes. Limited studies of environmental and economic impacts for AC supercapacitor production have been conducted. Thus, this paper evaluated the environmental and economic impacts of AC produced from lignocellulosic biomass for energy-storage purposes. The life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to quantify the potential environmental impacts associated with AC production via the proposed processes including feedstock establishment, harvest, transport, storage, and in-plant production. A techno-economic model was constructed to analyze the economic feasibility of AC production, which included the processes in the proposed technology, as well as the required facility installation and management. A base case, together with two alternative scenarios of KOH-reuse and steam processes for carbon activation, were evaluated for both environmental and economic impacts, while the uncertainty of the net present value (NPV) of the AC production was examined with seven economic indicators. Our results indicated that overall "in-plant production" process presented the highest environmental impacts. Normalized results of the life-cycle impact assessment showed that the AC production had environmental impacts mainly on the carcinogenics, ecotoxicity, and non-carcinogenics categories. We then further focused on life cycle analysis from raw biomass delivery to plant gate, the results showed that "feedstock establishment" had the most significant environmental impact, ranging from 50.3% to 85.2%. For an activated carbon plant producing 3000 kg AC per day in the base case, the capital cost would be USD 6.66 million, and annual operation cost was found to be USD 15.46 million. The required selling price (RSP) of AC was USD 16.79 per kg, with the discounted payback period (DPB) of 9.98 years. Alternative cases of KOH-reuse and steam processes had GHG emissions of 15.4 kg CO2 eq and 10.2 kg CO2 eq for every 1 kg of activated carbon, respectively. Monte Carlo simulation showed 49.96% of the probability for an investment to be profitable in activated carbon production from lignocellulosic biomass for supercapacitor electrodes. Electrosorption is a new emerging technology for micro-polluted water treatment. To gain a more accurate understanding of the mass and charge transfer process of electrosorption, the electrosorption performance of activated carbon fiber (ACF) electrodes with various concentrations was studied. In this paper, quasi-first-order and quasi-second-order dynamic equations, and an intra-particle diffusion equation were used to describe the electrosorption behaviors. It is believed that the electrosorption process is dominated by physical adsorption for ACF material, and the most important rate control steps in this process are intra-diffusion and electromigration steps. Based on the experimental results and modified Donnan model theory, a considerable electrosorption dynamic model which considered the influence of physical adsorption and the intra-diffusion resistance was proposed. In this study, RF-based un-doped and nitrogen-doped aerogels were produced by polymerisation reaction between resorcinol and formaldehyde with sodium carbonate as catalyst and melamine as the nitrogen source. Carbon/activated carbon aerogels were obtained by carbonisation of the gels under inert atmosphere (Ar) followed by activation of the carbons under CO2 at 800 °C. The BET analysis of the samples showed a more than two-fold increase in the specific Surf. area and pore volume of carbon from 537 to 1333 m2g−1 and 0.242 to 0.671 cm3g−1 respectively after nitrogen doping and activation. SEM and XRD analysis of the samples revealed highly porous amorphous nanostructures with denser inter-particle cross-linked pathways for the activated nitrogen-doped carbon. The X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the presence of nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms on the Surf. and within the carbon matrix where improvement in wettability with the drop in the contact angle from 123° to 80° was witnessed after oxygen and nitrogen doping. A steady drop in the equivalent series (RS) and charge transfer (RCT) resistances was observed by electrochemical measurements after the introduction of nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms. The highest specific capacitance of 289 Fg−1 with the lowest values of 0.11 Ω and 0.02 Ω for RS and RCT was achieved for nitrogen and oxygen dual-doped activated carbon in line with its improved Surf. chemistry and wettability, and its enhanced conductivity due to denser inter-particle cross-linked pathways. Some recent developments in the preparation of biomass carbon electrodes (CEs) using various biomass residues for application in energy storage devices, such as batteries and supercapacitors, are presented in this work. The application of biomass residues as the primary precursor for the production of CEs has been increasing over the last years due to it being a renewable source with comparably low processing cost, providing prerequisites for a process that is economically and technically sustainable. Electrochemical energy storage technology is key to the sustainable development of autonomous and wearable electronic devices. This article highlights the application of various types of biomass in the production of CEs by using different types of pyrolysis and experimental conditions and denotes some possible effects on their final characteristics. An overview is provided on the use of different biomass types for the synthesis of CEs with efficient electrochemical properties for batteries and supercapacitors. This review showed that, from different biomass residues, it is possible to obtain CEs with different electrochemical properties and that they can be successfully applied in high-performance batteries and supercapacitors. As the research and development of producing CEs still faces a gap by linking the type and composition of biomass residues with the carbon electrodes' electrochemical performances in supercapacitor and battery applications, this work tries to diminish this gap. Physical and chemical characteristics of the CEs, such as porosity, chemical composition, and surface functionalities, are reflected in the electrochemical performances. It is expected that this review not only provides the reader with a good overview of using various biomass residues in the energy storage applications, but also highlights some goals and challenges remaining in the future research and development of this topic. New techniques were developed for the synthesis of monolithic highly porous composite aerogels (hydrogels) from reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes, as well as graphene-containing composites based on mesoporous activated carbon. Simple operations for hydrophilization of synthesized samples were proposed. New electrode materials for electrosorption and deionization of water were fabricated. The NOx degradation performance of nano-TiO2 as a coating material for the road environment was evaluated in this research. The nano-TiO2 coating materials for both road surface and roadside were prepared by using anatase nano-TiO2, activated carbon powder, silane coupling agent and deionized water. The impact of varying amounts of coating material and silane coupling agent were evaluated. The road environment of NOx degradation was simulated by the photocatalytic test system designed by the research team. For the road surface coating, the photocatalytic degradation experiments of NO under different radiation intensities were carried out. The results show that the material has good photocatalytic degradation performance, and the proper amount of silane coupling agent can enhance the bonding performance of the material and asphalt mixture. For the roadside coating, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate was selected as the surfactant to carry out the photocatalytic degradation experiment of NO2 with different dosages of surfactant. The results showed that when the mass ratio of nano-TiO2 and surfactant was about 1:2, the catalytic degradation effect of the material was the best. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hybrid metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different Zn2+/Co2+ ratios are synthesized at room temperature with deionized water as the solvent. This use of deionized water can increase the yield of hybrid MOFs (up to 65–70%). After the pyrolysis, the obtained nanoporous carbons (NPCs) show a decrease in the surface area, in which the highest surface area is 655 m2 g−1. The as-prepared NPCs are subjected to activation with KOH in order to increase their surface area and convert cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) to Co oxides. These activated carbons are applied to electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and pseudocapacitors due to the presence of CoO and Co3O4 nanoparticles in the carbon framework, leading to significantly enhanced specific capacitance as compared to that of pristine NPCs.
