Simple Summary: Resistance to standard therapies impose a huge challenge on the treatment for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), which is often considered as a cell intrinsic property of either GBM or, more significantly, of GBM stem-like cells. Tumor-associated macrophages and microglia (TAMs) take up the majority of the immune population in the tumor microenvironment of GBM and potentially participating in modulating therapy responses. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the effect of TAMs on temozolomide (TMZ) induced chemoresistance. Members of the metzincin superfamily such as Matrix Metalloproteases (MMPs) and A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease (ADAM) proteases are important participants in the process of intercellular communications in the tumor microenvironment. Herein, we revealed a novel concept of an intra-tumoral ADAM8 mediated malignant positive feedback loop constituted by the intimate interaction of tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) and GBM cells under TMZ treatment. These findings provide a convincing example and further support the notion that the tumor microenvironment, in addition to GBM cells and GBM stem-like cells, should be considered as an essential modulator of therapy in GBM. In conclusion, our study provides a rational basis for TAM sparing ADAM8-targeting in GBM to optimize standard chemotherapy. Standard chemotherapy of Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) using temozolomide (TMZ) frequently fails due to acquired chemoresistance. In co-culture with macrophages ADAM8 was the only signature gene up-regulated in GBM cells induced by macrophages under TMZ treatment. The relationship between ADAM8 expression and TAM infiltration in GBM was determined in a patient cohort by qPCR; IF; and IHC staining and TCGA data analysis. Moreover; RNA-seq was carried out to identify the potential targets regulated by ADAM8. CCL2 expression levels were determined by qPCR; Western blot; IF; and ELISA. Utilizing qPCR; IF; and IHC staining; we observed a positive relationship between ADAM8 expression and TAMs infiltration level in GBM patient tissues. Furthermore; ADAM8 induced TAMs recruitment in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically; we revealed that ADAM8 activated HB-EGF/EGFR signaling and subsequently up-regulated production of CCL2 in GBM cells in the presence of TMZ treatment; promoting TAMs recruitment; which further induced ADAM8 expression in GBM cells to mediate TMZ chemoresistance. Thus; we revealed an ADAM8 dependent positive feedback loop between TAMs and GBM cells under TMZ treatment which involves CCL2 and EGFR signaling to cause TMZ resistance in GBM. Simple Summary: The application of IL-2 for treating cancer is limited owing to its toxicity and short half-life. Its high binding ability to IL-2 receptor α expands immunosuppressive Treg cells, which represents an undesirable toxicity in cancer immunotherapy. Moreover, its small molecular size is the reason for its short half-life. We solved these problems by using a covalent modification strategy of IL-2 variant IL-2K35C with fatty acid by maleimide chemistry, namely, IL-2K35C-moFA. The experiments performed in vitro and in vivo proved that IL-2K35C-moFA is a novel immunotherapeutic agent with the potential to selectively stimulate CD8+ T cells and NK cells. Compared to IL-2WT, IL-2K35C-moFA showed a specifically reduced potency for the stimulation of Treg cells. Our results also showed that fatty acid conjugation appears to be effective in half-life extension. The combination of selective lymphocyte expansion and its long half-life means IL-2K35C-moFA should be evaluated as a potential human immunotherapeutic in the future. Human interleukin 2 (IL-2) has shown impressive results as a therapeutic agent for cancer. However, IL-2-based cancer therapy is limited by strong Treg amplification owing to its high binding affinity to IL-2 receptor α (IL-2Rα) and its short half-life owing to its small molecular size. In this study, we solved these problems using a covalent modification strategy of the IL-2 variant, i.e., substituting cysteine (C) for lysine (K) at position 35, using octadecanedicarboxylic acid through maleimide chemistry, creating IL-2K35C-moFA. IL-2K35C-moFA was equipotent to human IL-2 wild type (IL-2WT) in activating tumor-killing CD8+ memory effector T cells (CD8+ T) and NK cells bearing the intermediate affinity IL-2 receptors, and less potent than IL-2WT on CTLL-2 cells bearing the high-affinity IL-2 receptors. Moreover, it was shown to support the preferential activation of IL-2 receptor β (IL-2Rβ) over IL-2Rα because of the mutation and fatty acid conjugation. In a B16F10 murine tumor model, IL-2K35C-moFA showed efficacy as a single dose and provided durable immunity for 1 week. The Chernoff information between two probability measures is a statistical divergence measuring their deviation defined as their maximally skewed Bhattacharyya distance. Although the Chernoff information was originally introduced for bounding the Bayes error in statistical hypothesis testing, the divergence found many other applications due to its empirical robustness property found in applications ranging from information fusion to quantum information. From the viewpoint of information theory, the Chernoff information can also be interpreted as a minmax symmetrization of the Kullback–Leibler divergence. In this paper, we first revisit the Chernoff information between two densities of a measurable Lebesgue space by considering the exponential families induced by their geometric mixtures: The so-called likelihood ratio exponential families. Second, we show how to (i) solve exactly the Chernoff information between any two univariate Gaussian distributions or get a closed-form formula using symbolic computing, (ii) report a closed-form formula of the Chernoff information of centered Gaussians with scaled covariance matrices and (iii) use a fast numerical scheme to approximate the Chernoff information between any two multivariate Gaussian distributions. In many hypothesis testing applications, we have mixed priors, with well-motivated informative priors for some parameters but not for others. The Bayesian methodology uses the Bayes factor and is helpful for the informative priors, as it incorporates Occam's razor via the multiplicity or trials factor in the look-elsewhere effect. However, if the prior is not known completely, the frequentist hypothesis test via the false-positive rate is a better approach, as it is less sensitive to the prior choice. We argue that when only partial prior information is available, it is best to combine the two methodologies by using the Bayes factor as a test statistic in the frequentist analysis. We show that the standard frequentist maximum likelihood-ratio test statistic corresponds to the Bayes factor with a non-informative Jeffrey's prior. We also show that mixed priors increase the statistical power in frequentist analyses over the maximum likelihood test statistic. We develop an analytic formalism that does not require expensive simulations and generalize Wilks' theorem beyond its usual regime of validity. In specific limits, the formalism reproduces existing expressions, such as the p-value of linear models and periodograms. We apply the formalism to an example of exoplanet transits, where multiplicity can be more than 10 7 . We show that our analytic expressions reproduce the p-values derived from numerical simulations. We offer an interpretation of our formalism based on the statistical mechanics. We introduce the counting of states in a continuous parameter space using the uncertainty volume as the quantum of the state. A "Workcation" (combining work and vacation) has become increasingly common. Traditionally, the workcation focus has been on productivity; however, data showing associations between workcations and improvements in employees' health are lacking. Therefore, this study examines the effects of a workcation on blood pressure, arterial stiffness, heart rate, autonomic nervous system function, and physical activity. Twenty healthy employees participating in a five-day workcation project at a large private company agreed to participate in this study. Data on arterial stiffness, heart rate, autonomic nerve activity, and physical activity were collected before, during, and after the workcation. Arterial stiffness, blood pressure, and heart rate significantly decreased (p < 0.05); meanwhile, physical activity levels and parasympathetic function during sleep significantly increased during the workcation (p < 0.05). Ultra-short-term HRV features assess minor autonomous nervous system variations such as variations resulting from cognitive stress peaks during demanding tasks. Several studies compare ultra-short-term and short-term HRV measurements to investigate their reliability. However, existing experiments are conducted in low cognitively demanding environments. In this paper, we propose to evaluate these measurements' reliability under cognitively demanding tasks using a near real-life setting. For this purpose, we selected 31 HRV features, extracted from data collected from 21 programmers performing code comprehension, and compared them across 18 different time frames, ranging from 3 min to 10 s. Statistical significance and correlation tests were performed between the features extracted using the larger window (3 min) and the same features extracted with the other 17 time frames. We paired these analyses with Bland–Altman plots to inspect how the extraction window size affects the HRV features. The main results show 13 features that presented at least 50% correlation when using 60-second windows. The HF and mNN features achieved around 50% correlation using a 30-second window. The 30-second window was the smallest time frame considered to have reliable measurements. Furthermore, the mNN feature proved to be quite robust to the shortening of the time resolution. Performance measures are crucial in selecting the best machine learning model for a given problem. Estimating classical model performance measures by subsampling methods like bagging or cross-validation has several weaknesses. The most important ones are the inability to test the significance of the difference, and the lack of interpretability. Recently proposed Elo-based Predictive Power (EPP)—a meta-measure of machine learning model performance, is an attempt to address these weaknesses. However, the EPP is based on wrong assumptions, so its estimates may not be correct. This paper introduces the Probability-based Ranking Model Approach (PMRA), which is a modified EPP approach with a correction that makes its estimates more reliable. PMRA is based on the calculation of the probability that one model achieves a better result than another one, using the Mixed Effects Logistic Regression model. The empirical analysis was carried out on a real mortgage credits dataset. The analysis included a comparison of how the PMRA and state-of-the-art k-fold cross-validation ranked the 49 machine learning models, an example application of a novel method in hyperparameters tuning problem, and a comparison of PMRA and EPP indications. PMRA gives the opportunity to compare a newly developed algorithm to state-of-the-art algorithms based on statistical criteria. Simple Summary: Penalties in judo (shido) have been previously associated with match outcomes and increased the likelihood of being defeated, particularly in heavier weight categories. Each 1-min increase in match duration and further athlete proceeds in competition increases the possibility of receiving a penalty. Penalties have also been associated with the occurrence of injuries, especially with grip fighting and other illegal moves and therefore, have a substantial effect on athletes' health. The main findings highlighted that the leading penalties in all weight categories for both genders on Judo World Championships (WC) were Non-combativity, Avoid Grip and False Attack. Additionally, a new trend in heavyweight athletes with a lower number of penalties is noted. Background: This research aimed to compare individual penalties by gender and weight categories in judo from the Judo World Championships (WC): Budapest—2017, Baku—2018, Tokyo—2019 and Budapest—2021 in all individual weight categories for females and males. Methods: Data were collected by notational analysis of 2041 penalty videos for females and 3473 penalty videos for males (total n = 5514). All individual penalties—Shido 1, 2, 3 and Hansoku Make (direct disqualification) were analysed by the Pearson chi-square test at the level of statistical significance of 5%. Results: Significant differences were noted in the assigned individual penalties between individual categories (p < 0.001) in both genders. The significant difference was contributed mainly by the weight category +78 kg with penalties Non-combativity (5.3) and Avoid Grip (−3.4) in females, while in males it impacted by the +100 kg weight category and the Non-combativity (4.2) and Avoid Grip (−4.0) penalties. For females, the most dominant individual penalties were Non-combativity (41.6%), Avoid Grip (16.2%) and False Attack (15.0%), and were Non-combativity (40.3%), Avoid Grip (19.5%) and False Attack (16.4%) for males. The largest number of penalties in females were in −52 kg (16.7%), −57 kg (15.9%) and +78 kg (15.2%) categories, while in males, they were −66 kg (17.2%), −73 kg (16.1%) and −90 kg (15.6%). Conclusions: The findings of this study highlight the leading penalties in all weight categories for both genders on WC to be Non-combativity, Avoid Grip and False Attack. Additionally, a new trend in heavyweight athletes with a lower number of penalties is noted. The obtained results indicate the need to pay more attention to working with competitors of all ages and genders on education to implement tactical variants, forms and means to use penalties to athletes' advantage, especially after a possible rule change and to lower the occurrence of injuries. In order to evaluate the influence of certain experimental or material-related conditions on results of the rapid chloride migration test (RCM test), statistical tests within and between samples are necessary. Thus, it needs to be clear which scatter a sample or a population of results is already subjected to without external influences due to the test method itself. So far, however, literature values for the appropriate statistical variable (coefficient of variation, CoV) explicitly valid for mortar or fine-grained concrete, e.g., for concrete repair, are missing. Therefore, we suggest a specific mortar CoV based on our own results of RCM tests performed on a cement-rich, sprayable mortar based on ordinary Portland cement. For the evaluation of external influences on a sample in comparison to a reference sample, we developed a significance criterion based on a statistical hypothesis test. The sensitivity and the reliability of this criterion is demonstrated on various results from RCM tests on mortar specimens, according to the test specifications and with deliberately chosen deviations from it. Simple Summary: Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by the presence of systemic clinical manifestations. Among them, pneumonia accounts for a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, highlighting an urgent need to explore possible susceptibility and potential mechanisms of pneumonia in MM. Recently, the gut–lung axis has emphasized the relevance of gut microbiota and pneumonia, indicating that the compromised function of gut microbiota may be susceptible to pneumonia. It has been previously shown that intestinal Klebsiella pneumonia enriches in MM patients and promotes MM progression in our previous work. In addition, host metabolism has been identified as a key regulator of MM. However, what role the altered gut microbiota plays in MM with pneumonia remains unknown. In this study, we explored the association between gut microbiota and MM with pneumonia. This is the first study to identify and elucidate the function of gut microbiota involved in MM with pneumonia. Pneumonia accounts for a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. It has been previously shown that intestinal Klebsiella pneumonia (K. pneumonia) enriches in MM and promotes MM progression. However, what role the altered gut microbiota plays in MM with pneumonia remains unknown. Here, we show that intestinal K. pneumonia is significantly enriched in MM with pneumonia. This enriched intestinal K. pneumonia links to the incidence of pneumonia in MM, and intestinal colonization of K. pneumonia contributes to pneumonia in a 5TGM1 MM mice model. Further targeted metabolomic assays reveal the elevated level of glutamine, which is consistently increased with the enrichment of K. pneumonia in MM mice and patients, is synthesized by K. pneumonia, and leads to the elevated secretion of TNF-α in the lung normal fibroblast cells for the higher incidence of pneumonia. Inhibiting glutamine synthesis by establishing glnA-mutated K. pneumonia alleviates the incidence of pneumonia in the 5TGM1 MM mice model. Overall, our work proposes that intestinal K. pneumonia indirectly contributes to pneumonia in MM by synthesizing glutamine. Simple Summary: This work focuses on the peculiar contribution made by molecular dynamics simulation and in silico tools, in the choice of an effective second line therapy for a BRAF-mutated melanoma patient who developed resistance to the undergoing targeted therapy with BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Among the MEK inhibitors, we identified a drug alternative to trametinib, able to block the target even in the presence of a damaging mutation, and supported these findings, gathered by an in silico approach, with a liquid biopsy tracking of the response to treatment. The evolution of the disease, before and after the therapy change, was followed by analysis of the circulating tumor DNA and circulating melanoma cells. The systemic treatment of metastatic melanoma has radically changed, due to an improvement in the understanding of its genetic landscape and the advent of targeted therapy. However, the response to BRAF/MEK inhibitors is transitory, and big efforts were made to identify the mechanisms underlying the resistance. We exploited a combined approach, encompassing liquid biopsy analysis and molecular dynamics simulation, for tracking tumor evolution, and in parallel defining the best treatment option. The samples at different time points were collected from a BRAF-mutant melanoma patient who developed an early resistance to dabrafenib/trametinib. The analysis of the circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) identified the MEK1 p.P124L mutation that confers resistance to trametinib. With an in silico modeling, we identified cobimetinib as an alternative MEK inhibitor, and consequently suggested a therapy switch to vemurafenib/cobimetinib. The patient response was followed by ctDNA tracking and circulating melanoma cell (CMC) count. The cobimetinib administration led to an important reduction in the BRAF p.V600E and MEK1 p.P124L allele fractions and in the CMC number, features suggestive of a putative response. In summary, this study emphasizes the usefulness of a liquid biopsy-based approach combined with in silico simulation, to track real-time tumor evolution while assessing the best treatment option. Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) is innately immune to all detection-side attacks. Due to the limitations of technology, most MDI-QKD protocols use weak coherent photon sources (WCPs), which may suffer from a photon-number splitting (PNS) attack from eavesdroppers. Therefore, the existing MDI-QKD protocols also need the decoy-state method, which can resist PNS attacks very well. However, the existing decoy-state methods do not attend to the existence of PNS attacks, and the secure keys are only generated by single-photon components. In fact, multiphoton pulses can also form secure keys if we can confirm that there is no PNS attack. For simplicity, we only analyze the weaker version of a PNS attack in which a legitimate user's pulse count rate changes significantly after the attack. In this paper, under the null hypothesis of no PNS attack, we first determine whether there is an attack or not by retrieving the missing information of the existing decoy-state MDI-QKD protocols via statistical hypothesis testing, extract a normal distribution statistic, and provide a detection method and the corresponding Type I error probability. If the result is judged to be an attack, we use the existing decoy-state method to estimate the secure key rate. Otherwise, all pulses with the same basis leading to successful Bell state measurement (BSM) events including both single-photon pulses and multiphoton pulses can be used to generate secure keys, and we give the formula of the secure key rate in this case. Nowadays pulmonary diseases are an increasingly important cause of morbidity and mortality. Diaphragmatic breathing is a controlled-breathing technique that aims to optimize thoracoabdominal movements. The aim of this study was to apply a respiratory and musculoskeletal physiotherapy program in institutionalized older adults and to assess the effects on their pulmonary function tests and oxygen saturation. A randomized double-blind clinical trial was conducted with thirty institutionalized older adults, randomly assigned to a control group (CG), who conducted musculoskeletal exercises; or an experimental group (EG) who, in addition, carried out diaphragmatic breathing, administered for eight weeks, three times/week. Outcomes were pulmonary function variables (forced vital capacity, FVC; forced expired volume at 1 s, FEV1; the FEV1/FVC ratio) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) before and after treatment. Normality of the distributions was tested with Saphiro-Wilk and the pre-post improvement was assessed with a two-sample Mann-Whitney test. Significance level was corrected for multiple comparisons using Benjamini-Hochberg correction (p < 0.04). There was a clinically significant improvement of FVC and FEV1 for the EG. Moreover, the EG showed a statistically significant increase of SpO2 (p = 0.028) after treatment when compared to CG. Acute SARS-CoV-2 infections in children and adolescents are usually mild. However, they can suffer from ongoing symptoms, generally referred to as long COVID. Sleep disorders are one of the most frequent complaints in long COVID although precise data are missing. We assessed the sleep behavior of children and adolescents who presented at our outpatient clinic between January 2021 and May 2022 with the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ-DE). We compared the sleep behavior at three different time points: pre-COVID-19; post-COVID-19 at the initial presentation; and post-COVID-19 at re-presentation. Data from 45 patients were analyzed. Of those, 64% were female and the median age was 10 years (range: 0–18 years). Asymptomatic or mild COVID-19 disease was experienced in 89% of patients; 11% experienced moderate disease. The initial presentation occurred at a median of 20.4 weeks (6 weeks–14 months) after the infection. The CSHQ-DE score increased significantly from pre-COVID-19 (45.82 ± 8.7 points) to post-COVID-19 (49.40 ± 8.3 points; p ≤ 0.01). The score then normalized at re-presentation (46.98 ± 7.8; p = 0.1). The greatest changes were seen in the CSHQ-DE subscale score "daytime sleepiness". Our data showed that children and adolescents with long COVID often suffer from sleep disturbances. Electricity has a crucial function in contemporary civilization. The power grid must be stable to ensure the efficiency and dependability of electrical equipment. This implies that the high-voltage equipment at the substation must be reliably operated. As a result, the appropriate and dependable use of systems to monitor the operating status of high-voltage electrical equipment has recently gained attention. Partial discharge (PD) analysis is one of the most promising solutions for monitoring and diagnosing potential problems in insulation systems. Noise is a major challenge in diagnosing and detecting defects when using this measurement. This study aims to denoise PD signals using a data decomposition method, improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise algorithm, combined with statistical significance test to increase noise reduction efficiency and to derive and visualize the Hilbert spectrum of the input signal in time-frequency domain after filtering the noise. In the PD signal analysis, both artificial and experimental signals were used as input signals in the decomposition method. For these signals, this study has yielded significant improvement in the denoising and the PD detecting process indicated by statistical measures. A fuzzy set extension known as the hesitant fuzzy set (HFS) has increased in popularity for decision making in recent years, especially when experts have had trouble evaluating several alternatives by employing a single value for assessment when working in a fuzzy environment. However, it has a significant problem in its uses, i.e., considerable data loss. The probabilistic hesitant fuzzy set (PHFS) has been proposed to improve the HFS. It provides probability values to the HFS and has the ability to retain more information than the HFS. Previously, fuzzy regression models such as the fuzzy linear regression model (FLRM) and hesitant fuzzy linear regression model were used for decision making; however, these models do not provide information about the distribution. To address this issue, we proposed a probabilistic hesitant fuzzy linear regression model (PHFLRM) that incorporates distribution information to account for multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems. The PHFLRM observes the input–output (IPOP) variables as probabilistic hesitant fuzzy elements (PHFEs) and uses a linear programming model (LPM) to estimate the parameters. A case study is used to illustrate the proposed methodology. Additionally, an MCDM technique called the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is employed to compare the PHFLRM findings with those obtained using TOPSIS. Importantly, miR-148a targeting PDK1 regulated breast cancer cells glycolysis, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and Adriamycin resistance. Our results suggested that the HDAC2/EZH2/miR-148a/PDK1 axis may be a promising potential therapeutic strategy. Background: Breast cancer has one of highest morbidity and mortality rates for women. Abnormalities regarding epigenetics modification and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1)-induced unusual metabolism contribute to breast cancer progression and chemotherapy resistance. However, the role and mechanism of epigenetic change in regulating PDK1 in breast cancer remains to be elucidated. Methods: Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and Pearson's correlation analysis were performed to analyze the relationship between histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2), enhancer of zeste homologue 2 (EZH2), and PDK1 in database and human breast cancer tissues. Dual luciferase reporters were used to test the regulation between PDK1 and miR-148a. HDAC2 and EZH2 were found to regulate miR-148a expression through Western blotting assays, qRT-PCR and co-immunoprecipitation assays. The effects of PDK1 and miR-148a in breast cancer were investigated by immunofluorescence (IF) assay, Transwell assay and flow cytometry assay. The roles of miR-148a/PDK1 in tumor growth were investigated in vivo. Results: We found that PDK1 expression was upregulated by epigenetic alterations mediated by HDAC2 and EZH2. At the post-transcriptional level, PDK1 was a new direct target of miR-148a and was upregulated in breast cancer cells due to miR-148a suppression. PDK1 overexpression partly reversed the biological function of miR-148a—including miR-148a's ability to increase cell sensitivity to Adriamycin (ADR) treatment—inhibiting cell glycolysis, invasion and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), and inducing apoptosis and repressing tumor growth. Furthermore, we identified a novel mechanism: DNMT1 directly bound to EZH2 and recruited EZH2 and HDAC2 complexes to the promoter region of miR-148a, leading to miR-148a downregulation. In breast cancer tissues, HDAC2 and EZH2 protein expression levels also were inversely correlated with levels of miR-148a expression. Conclusion: Our study found a new regulatory mechanism in which EZH2 and HDAC2 mediate PDK1 upregulation by silencing miR-148a expression to regulate cancer development and Adriamycin resistance. The incidence of colon, rectal, and colorectal cancer is very high, and diagnosis is often made in the advanced stages of the disease. In cases where peritoneal carcinomatosis is limited, patients can benefit from newer treatment options if the disease is promptly identified, and they are referred to specialized centers. Therefore, an essential diagnostic benefit would be identifying those factors that could lead to early diagnosis. A retrospective study was performed using patient data gathered from 2010 to 2020. The collected data were represented by routine blood tests subjected to stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria. In order to determine the presence or absence of peritoneal carcinomatosis in colorectal cancer patients, three types of machine learning approaches were applied: a neuro-evolutive methodology based on artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and random forests (RF), all combined with differential evolution (DE). The optimizer (DE in our case) determined the internal and structural parameters that defined the ANN, SVM, and RF in their optimal form. The RF strategy obtained the best accuracy in the testing phase (0.75). Null hypothesis significance testing is a commonly used tool for making statistical inferences in empirical studies, but its use has always been controversial. In this manuscript, I argue that even more problematic is that significance testing, and other abstract statistical benchmarks, often are used as tools for interpreting study data. This is problematic because interpreting data requires domain knowledge of the scientific topic and sensitivity to the study context, something that significance testing and other purely statistical approaches are not. By using simple examples, I demonstrate that researchers must first use their domain knowledge—professional expertise, clinical experience, practical insight—to interpret the data in their study and then use inferential statistics to provide some reasonable estimates about what can be generalized from the study data. Moving beyond the current focus on abstract statistical benchmarks will encourage researchers to measure their phenomena in more meaningful ways, transparently convey their data, and communicate their intellectual reasons for interpreting the data as they do, a shift that will better foster a scientific forum for cumulative science. Cortical vision impairment (CVI) and Cerebral Palsy (CP) lead to decrement in sensory and motor functions of infants. The current study examined the effectiveness of sensory integration interventions on sensory, motor, and oculomotor skills in infants with cortical vision impairment. Thirty-four infants with and CP aged 12–18 months were enrolled to the study. The infants were randomly divided into two groups as the control and intervention groups. The intervention group took sensory integration intervention 2 days a week for 8 weeks in addition to conventional physiotherapy 2 days a week for 8 weeks. The control group only received the conventional physiotherapy program 2 days a week for 8 weeks. The duration of the treatment sessions were 45 min for both interventions. Before and after the intervention, sensory processing functions were evaluated with the Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI), and motor functions were evaluated with the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). There was a statistically significant difference between the pre- and post-test mean TSFI total and AIMS scores in the intervention group and control group (p < 0.001). The intervention group mean TSFI scores were more statistically significant than the those of the control group. Mean post-intervention AIMS scores did not differ between groups. Sensory integration intervention delivered with the conventional physiotherapy program was more effective than the conventional physiotherapy program in increasing sensory processing skills in one measure in infants with CVI and CP. Simple Summary: Urothelial carcinoma (UC) of the bladder is the most common malignancy in dialysis patients in Taiwan compared with renal cell carcinoma in Western countries. Radical cystectomy is the standard of care for localized muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), as well as for selected patients with high-risk non-MIBC. Despite improvements in anesthetic competency, surgical techniques, and postoperative care, dialysis patients undergoing radical cystectomy are at a higher risk of perioperative morbidity and mortality than non-dialysis patients. Due to the relative rarity of the condition, published data on predictors of outcome in ESRD patients undergoing radical cystectomy are scant. Our study revealed that accurate reporting of complications is necessary for preoperative counseling, identifying modifiable risk factors, and planning risk mitigation strategies. High comorbidity and low-volume surgeons were interrelated as notable risk factors for major complications. In addition to tumor-related factors, male sex, older age, and major complications significantly influence survival. Background: We investigated the use of a standardized reporting system to study perioperative complications and oncologic outcomes after radical cystectomy in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with bladder cancer. Methods: We reviewed retrospective outcomes in 141 ESRD patients with bladder cancer who underwent radical cystectomy between 2004 and 2015. Complications were graded using the Clavien–Dindo classification system with 0–2 classified as "No Major Complications" and Clavien 3–5 as "Major Complications". Low-volume surgeons were classified as those performing fewer than nine cases during the study. Fisher's exact test along with the chi-squared test, two-tailed t tests, logistic regression, and the Cox proportional hazard model were used to evaluate all clinically meaningful covariates. Results: Ninety-nine (99, 70.2%) patients had no major complications, and forty-two (29.8%) patients had major complications. Patients in the major complications group were older, had a higher Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), and had a longer hospitalization duration than those in the no major complications group (all, p < 0.05). Major complications were also more common when the procedure was performed by low-volume surgeons (p = 0.003). In multivariate logistic regression models, CCI ≥ 5 (p = 0.006) and low-volume surgeon (p = 0.004) were independent predictors of major complications. According to multivariate analysis with the Cox hazards regression, male sex, age > 70 years, CCI ≥ 5, bladder cancer stage ≥ 3, lymphovascular invasion, and experiencing major complications were significant poor prognostic factors for overall survival (all, p < 0.05). Simple Summary: This study investigates brain network modifications related to tumor grade and location using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theory. We demonstrated that low-grade gliomas (LGG) lead to increased efficiency of the surrounding functional network, while high-grade gliomas (HGG) seem to disrupt brain connectivity in remote areas. Tumor location appears to influence the pattern of reorganization, including the recruitment of the contralateral hemisphere. Overall, LGG may show more favorable connectivity changes than HGG. We retrospectively studied 30 low-grade (LGG), 30 high-grade (HGG) left-hemispheric glioma patients and 20 healthy controls (HC) with rs-fMRI. Tumor location was labeled as: frontal, temporal, parietal, insular or occipital. We collected patients' clinical data from records. We analyzed whole-brain and hemispheric networks in all patients and HC. Subsequently, we studied lobar networks in subgroups of patients divided by tumor location. Seven graph-theoretical metrics were calculated (FDR p < 0.05). Connectograms were computed for significant nodes. The two-tailed Student t-test or Mann–Whitney U-test (p < 0.05) were used to compare graph metrics and clinical data. The hemispheric network analysis showed increased ipsilateral connectivity for LGG (global efficiency p = 0.03) and decreased contralateral connectivity for HGG (degree/cost p = 0.028). Frontal and temporal tumors showed bilateral modifications; parietal and insular tumors showed only local effects. Temporal tumors led to a bilateral decrease in all graph metrics. The time-series online job portal data for the ICT industry in Bangladesh provides an opportunity to analyze high demand job titles and skills over time. These time-series data address the question of the speed of changes in job titles and skills and responsiveness of computer science and engineering (CSE) curricula. This study gathers online job portal data of the ICT industry in Bangladesh from 2016 to 2021. Natural language processing is used to group similar skills and job titles following the O*NET Online taxonomy. In addition to the descriptive statistics, the statistical significance test and correlation analysis are conducted. The analysis could identify high demand ICT job titles (Software Developers, Computer System Engineers/Architects, Web Developers, Project Management Specialists) and skills (API, Database, JavaScript) but Computer System Engineer/Architect job titles and API skills are increasing fast. The shift from networking to JavaScript and UI Design is also noteworthy after COVID-19. The preliminary curricula analysis suggests the responsiveness of the CSE program, but online job portal data analysis might provide opportunities for developing unique CSE specialization, courses and curricula. Adolescents diagnosed with Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs) are at risk for alexithymia. REDs patients' families show dysfunctional interactive patterns, and childhood family environment influences alexithymia development. We aimed to assess the relationship between family dysfunctional interactive patterns and patients' alexithymia in a sample of adolescents diagnosed with REDs. Forty-five patients and their parents were enrolled. They participated in the clinical version of the Lausanne Triadic Play (LTPc), a standardized observational procedure to assess family functioning. We used the self-report questionnaire Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) to assess patients' alexithymia. The TAS-20 provides a multi-factorial measure of patients' alexithymia: Difficulty in Identifying Feelings, DIF; Difficulty in Describing Feelings, DDF; Externally-oriented Thinking, EOT) and a total (TOT) score. DDF and EOT scores were significantly higher than DIF score. Patients' families showed dysfunctional interactive patterns, with a predominance of collusive alliance. Patients from families characterized by collusive alliance had higher TOT scores compared to counterparts from families exhibiting a different interactive dysfunctional pattern. In families characterized by a collusive triadic alliance, the dysfunctional interactive pattern was linked with the risk of alexithymia in patients with REDs. The analysis of high-throughput metabolomics mass spectrometry data across multiple biological sample types (biospecimens) poses challenges due to missing data. During differential abundance analysis, dropping samples with missing values can lead to severe loss of data as well as biased results in group comparisons and effect size estimates. However, the imputation of missing data (the process of replacing missing data with estimated values such as a mean) may compromise the inherent intra-subject correlation of a metabolite across multiple biospecimens from the same subject, which in turn may compromise the efficacy of the statistical analysis of differential metabolites in biomarker discovery. We investigated imputation strategies when considering multiple biospecimens from the same subject. We compared a novel, but simple, approach that consists of combining the two biospecimen data matrices (rows and columns of subjects and metabolites) and imputes the two biospecimen data matrices together to an approach that imputes each biospecimen data matrix separately. We then compared the bias in the estimation of the intra-subject multi-specimen correlation and its effects on the validity of statistical significance tests between two approaches. The combined approach to multi-biospecimen studies has not been evaluated previously even though it is intuitive and easy to implement. We examine these two approaches for five imputation methods: random forest, k nearest neighbor, expectation-maximization with bootstrap, quantile regression, and half the minimum observed value. Combining the biospecimen data matrices for imputation did not greatly increase efficacy in conserving the correlation structure or improving accuracy in the statistical conclusions for most of the methods examined. Adaptive control of traffic engineering (TE) based on 5G network function virtualization (NFV) authorizes the efficient and dynamic network resource allocation, whose utilization is increasingly wide and will become more widespread. In this paper, we first devise an adaptive control scheme for data-driven traffic migration engineering (TME) on the 5G virtual network. The proposed TME technology focuses on a 5G enhancing mobile broadband (eMBB) network application scenario and takes the network operating expenditure (OPEX) as the main research target. Firstly, we predict the network traffic of the virtual network through the constructed traffic predicted mathematical model. Then, based on the triangle inequality violation (TIV) theorem, some local network traffic is adaptively migrated when the predicted link traffic exceeds the peak rate. Consequently, the migrations of logical links in the virtual network layer are completed. Finally, our experiments show that the proposed protocol can effectively improve the key performance indicators (KPIs) of the reconfigured network, such as throughput, delay and energy consumption. Furthermore, the Fridman and Holm statistical hypothesis tests are also used to analyze the simulation data, which proves that the proposed approximate TME algorithm has statistical significance. Based on the daily temperature and precipitation data from 1961 to 2021 obtained from 2019 national meteorological stations of China, and by means of Meteorological Drought Comprehensive Index (MCI) and some improved identification methods, we identified all drought event processes in all the seven regions of China in this paper. We also carefully analyzed these regional droughts and made following conclusions: drought was spreading towards southern China with an increasing frequency; consecutive drought year group occurred in all the seven regions of China with an increasing frequency under the background of global warming; both drought duration and comprehensive intensity consistently changed with the area affected by drought, with a correlation coefficient of 0.52–0.67 and 0.88–0.99 respectively, and passed the significance test of 0.05. The method used in this paper could be employed to effectively monitor and evaluate drought processes from multiple dimensions including duration, comprehensive intensity and area affected by drought. Road maintenance and cleaning in winter are performed with ploughshares. Due to the fact that the layer of snow and ice that is removed from the road surface contains various hard impurities, ploughshares are exposed to high intensity abrasive wear. This article deals with the resistance to abrasive wear of originally used ploughshare materials and the materials that were designed as a suitable modification of the ploughshare to increase its service life. The chemical composition of materials used to manufacture ploughshare components is unknown. For this reason, they were analyzed with an ARL 4460 spectrometer, which was used to analyze the element content. The main part of the research was focused on the abrasion resistance test, which was performed according to the GOST 23.208-79 standard. Based on the chemical analysis, it was found that the basic body of the ploughshare was made of S355J2G3 steel, and the raking blade material was made of 37MnSi5 steel. The original material (steel S355J2G3) of the ploughshare body as a reference standard was compared to steel HARDOX 450. Furthermore, a sample made of the original material of the raking blade (steel 37MnSi5) was used as a reference standard, the properties of which were compared to the newly designed OK 84.58 and UTP 690 hardfacing materials. In this paper, the propagation of sound in an acoustically narrow waveguide, the wall of which is lined with identical dipole resonators and masses on springs, is theoretically considered. It is shown that, in the frequency range above the resonant frequency of the resonators, sound waves exponentially attenuate, and the waveguide is locked. The width of this range depends on two parameters—the ratio of the cross-sectional areas of the resonators and the waveguide and the ratio of the mass of the resonator to the mass of the medium displaced by it. The recent advances in Human-Computer Interaction and Artificial Intelligence have significantly increased the importance of identifying human emotions from different sensory cues. Hence, understanding the underlying relationships between emotions and sensory cues have become a subject of study in many fields including Acoustics, Psychology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. This work is a preliminary step towards investigating cues for human emotion on a fundamental level by aiming to establish relationships between tonal frequencies of sound and emotions. For that, an online perception test is conducted, in which participants are asked to rate the perceived emotions corresponding to each tone. The results show that a crossover point for four primary emotions lies in the frequency range of 417–440 Hz, thus consolidating the hypothesis that the frequency range of 432–440 Hz is neutral from human emotion perspective. The security of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that control industrial systems is becoming increasingly critical due to the ubiquity of the Internet of Things technologies and increasingly nefarious cyber-attack activity. Conventional techniques for safeguarding PLCs are difficult due to their unique architectures. This work proposes a one-class support vector machine, one-class neural network interconnected in a feed-forward manner, and isolation forest approaches for verifying PLC process integrity by monitoring PLC memory addresses. A comprehensive experiment is conducted using an open-source PLC subjected to multiple attack scenarios. A new histogram-based approach is introduced to visualize anomaly detection algorithm performance and prediction confidence. Comparative performance analyses of the proposed algorithms using decision scores and prediction confidence are presented. Results show that isolation forest outperforms one-class neural network, one-class support vector machine, and previous work, in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score on seven attack scenarios considered. Predictive modeling is a critical technique in many real-world applications, including auto insurance rate-making and the decision making of rate filings review for regulation purposes. It is also important in predicting financial and economic risk in business and economics. Unlike testing hypotheses in statistical inference, results obtained from predictive modeling serve as statistical evidence for the decision making of the underlying problem and discovering the functional relationship between the response variable and the predictors. As a result of this, the variable importance measures become an essential aspect of helping to better understand the contributions of predictors to the built model. In this work, we focus on the study of using generalized linear models (GLM) for the size of loss distributions. In addition, we address the problem of measuring the importance of the variables used in the GLM to further evaluate their potential impact on insurance pricing. In this regard, we propose to shift the focus from variable importance measures of factor levels to factors themselves and to develop variable importance measures for factors included in the model. Therefore, this work is exclusively for modeling with categorical variables as predictors. This work contributes to the further development of GLM modeling to make it even more practical due to this added value. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of the bond characteristics of steel bar reinforced geopolymer concrete (GPC). The ASTM A944 beam end tests were conducted on GPC beams reinforced with plain or ribbed bars. The bond–slip curves and the bond strength of GPC beams were obtained. The relationship between the bond stress and relative slip in plain and ribbed bar reinforced GPC has been represented by empirical formulae. The bond testing results were compared with those of corresponding ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPC) using statistical hypothesis tests. The results of hypothesis testing showed that GPC was significantly superior to OPC in terms of bond capability with plain bars and bond stiffness with ribbed bars. The statistical analysis indicated that the bond–slip relations derived for OPC are inapplicable to GPC; thus, new bond–slip relations are suggested to estimate the development of bond stress and relative slip between GPC and steel bars. Featured Application: The study investigates the factors influencing the longitudinal driving distance during the lane-changing process to provide a theoretical basis for the set buffer zone length of future autonomous driving dedicated lanes. With the development of intelligent transportation, dedicated highway lanes for autonomous vehicles (AVs), necessary for ensuring their right of way, have emerged as critical issues in intelligent transportation research, which makes it necessary to set up specialized lane-changing buffer zones in the lane adjacent to the dedicated one. Restricted by the current situation of intelligent transportation systems, based on NGSIM data, this study filters out typical lane-changing description data featuring lane-changing behaviors and constructs a principal component analysis (PCA) model containing factors affecting the longitudinal driving distance during the whole lane-changing procedure. The validity of the model is evaluated with a significance test. Comparing the PCA model to a general linear regression model, suggestions on setting the length of lane-changing buffer zones are put forward. The length of the buffer zone mainly considers speed, acceleration, and the flow in the dedicated lane. In general, a shorter buffer zone length can be achieved by increasing the design speed of the buffer zone, raising the headway of AVs in the dedicated lane, reducing the acceleration rate of lane-changing vehicles, and reducing the time proportion of the lane change preparation stage, which occurs earlier in the procedure. This research aimed to compare the accuracy of dental implant placement among three types of surgical guide: metal sleeve with key handle (Nobel guide, Nobel Biocare, Göteborg, Sweden), metal sleeve without key handle, and non-sleeve without key handle (Dentium full guide kit, Dentium Co., Seoul, Korea) when placing the implant in different bone inclinations. A total of 72 polyurethane bone models were fabricated in different inclinations (0°, 45°, and 60°). The dental implants were placed in bone models following the company's recommendations. After dental implants were installed, the digital scans were done by an extraoral scanner. The deviations of the dental implant position were evaluated by superimposition between post-implant placement and reference model by using GOM inspect software. The deviation measurement was shown in 5 parameters: angular deviation, 3D deviation at the crest, 3D deviation at the apex, lateral linear deviation, and vertical linear deviation. The data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA and post-hoc tests at a significance level of 0.05. The accuracy of the dental implant position was not significantly influenced by the difference in the surgical guide system (p > 0.05). There were significant differences between placed and planned implant positions in the different inclinations of the bone. A significant difference was found in all parameters of 0° and 60° bone inclinations (p < 0.05). At 0° and 45°, angulated bone showed significant differences except in 3D deviation at the apex. Between 45° and 60° were significant differences only in angular deviation. Within the limitations of this study, the accuracy of implant placement among three types of surgical guides (Non-sleeve without key handle, Metal sleeve without key handle, and Metal sleeve with key handle) from two companies (Dentium and Nobel Biocare) was similar. Landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) in Northeast China are rare because of the region's high latitude (>40°N). In 2020, Northeast China was affected by three TCs within half a month—the first time on record. We used the Global Precipitation Measurement orbital dataset to study the precipitation microphysics during the TC period in Northeast China in 2020 (2020-TC), and during September in this region from 2014 to 2019 (hereafter September 2014–September 2019). FY-4A was used to provide cloud top height (CTH). The results show that, compared with September 2014–September 2019, the 2020-TC precipitation has stronger precipitation ice productivity, weaker deposition efficiency, stronger riming, and stronger coalescence processes. The storm top height (STH), CTH, and the difference between the two (CTH-STH) are indicative of the near-surface droplet size distribution (DSD), but there are differences: STH and CTH-STH both correlate significantly with mean mass-weighted drop diameter, whereas only the positive correlation between CTH and normalized drop concentration parameter passes the significance test. These results reveal for the first time the precipitation microphysics of landfalling TCs in Northeast China, and allow discussion of the validity of convective intensity indicators from the perspective of DSD. Data mining applications are growing with the availability of large data; sometimes, handling large data is also a typical task. Segregation of the data for extracting useful information is inevitable for designing modern technologies. Considering this fact, the work proposes a chaos embed marine predator algorithm (CMPA) for feature selection. The optimization routine is designed with the aim of maximizing the classification accuracy with the optimal number of features selected. The well-known benchmark data sets have been chosen for validating the performance of the proposed algorithm. A comparative analysis of the performance with some well-known algorithms advocates the applicability of the proposed algorithm. Further, the analysis has been extended to some of the well-known chaotic algorithms; first, the binary versions of these algorithms are developed and then the comparative analysis of the performance has been conducted on the basis of mean features selected, classification accuracy obtained and fitness function values. In this work, we investigate the oscillatory properties of the neutral differential equation (r (l) [ (s (l) + p (l) s (g (l))) ′ ] v) ′ + ∑ i = 1 n q i (l) s v (h i (l)) = 0 , where s ≥ s 0 . We first present new monotonic properties for the solutions of this equation, and these properties are characterized by an iterative nature. Using these new properties, we obtain new oscillation conditions that guarantee that all solutions are oscillate. Our results are a complement and extension to the relevant results in the literature. Background. Clear aligners treatment (CAT) is a common solution in orthodontics to treat both simple and complex malocclusions. This study aimed to evaluate the predictability of CAT, comparing the virtually planned and the achieved tooth movement at the end of stage 15, which is often the time of first refinement. Methods. Seventeen patients (mean age: 28.3 years) were enrolled in the study. Torque, tip and rotation were analyzed in 238 maxillary teeth on digital models at Pre-treatment (T0), at the end of stage 15 (T15) and at virtually planned stage 15 (T15i). Prescription, Achieved movement and performance values were calculated to compare the virtually planned and the clinical tooth position. Data were analyzed by means of Student's t test with a level of significance set at p < 0.05. Results. The largest iper-performance was the torque correction of the second molars (+2.3° ± 3.1°), the greatest under-performance was the tip correction of the first molars (−2.3° ± 3.3°), while rotation corrections of all the teeth showed more accurate performance. No significant differences were found between mean Prescription and mean Achieved movement for all the assessed movements (p < 0.05). Conclusions. Examining the characteristics of vegetation change and associated spatial patterns under different protection levels can provide a scientific basis for national park protection and management. Based on the dense time-series Landsat enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data between 1986 and 2020, we utilized the Wild Binary Segmentation (WBS) approach to detect spatial and temporal characteristics of abrupt, gradual, and total changes in Wuyishan National Park. The differences in vegetation change in three protection-level areas (strictly protected [Prots], generally protected [Prot], and non-protected [NP]) were examined, and the contributions to their spatial patterns were evaluated through Geodetector. The results showed the following: (1) The highest percentage of area without abrupt change was in Prots (39.89%), and the lowest percentage was in NP (17.44%). The percentage of abrupt change frequency (larger than three times) increased from 4.40% to 9.10% and 12.49% with the decreases in protection. The significance test showed that the difference in changed frequencies was not significant among these regions, but the interannual variation of abrupt change in Prots was significantly different from other areas. (2) The vegetation coverage of the Wuyishan National Park generally improved. The total EVI change (TEVI) showed that the positive percentage of Prots and Prot was 90.43% and 91.71%, respectively, slightly higher than that of NP (88.44%). However, the mean greenness change of NP was higher than that of Prots and Prot. (3) The park's EVI spatial pattern in 1986 was the strongest factor determining the EVI spatial pattern in 2020; the explanatory power reduced as the protection level decreased. The explanation power (q value) of abrupt vegetation change was lower and increased as the protection level decreased. The interaction detection showed that EVI1986 and TEVI had the strongest explanatory powers, but the explanatory ability gradually weakened from 0.713 to 0.672 to 0.581 in Prots, Prot, and NP, respectively. Accurate diagnosis to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for the clinical management of this lethal infection. Recently, many low-cost and easy-to-use rapid test kits (RTK) have been developed in many countries for the massive screening of SARS-CoV-2. Thus, evaluating the accuracy and reliability of an RTK is critical. The current study was conducted on 157 individuals to evaluate the performance accuracy of rapid SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection kits using different clinical samples compared with qRT-PCR results. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from patients for qRT-PCR and RTK tests, and then buccal and nasal, and nasal swabs were collected for RTK tests separately. The nasal and buccal swabs showed high sensitivity (98%) and specificity (100%) compared with the qRT-PCR results. Meanwhile, for nasal, the sensitivity was 96% with 98% specificity, and nasopharyngeal swabs showed 98% sensitivity and 94% specificity. Fisher's exact test revealed statistical significance (p < 0.05) between nasopharyngeal, nasal and buccal, and nasal swabs compared with qRT-PCR results. The study concludes that different clinical samples used for the rapid diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 showed high sensitivities and specificities compared with qRT-PCR. The RTKs using nasal and buccal, nasopharyngeal, and nasal swabs are valuable tools for the early detection of SARS-CoV-2, especially when molecular detections are available with limited access and a high infectivity rate, when the timely detection of virus cases is urgently needed. Background: Despite clinical practice utilizing the Dumas test (SVINT), some questions remain unanswered, including the age-related changes in frequency (FN) and slow-phase angular velocity (SPAV). This study aims to retrospectively evaluate their variations in subjects affected by unilateral peripheral vestibular loss (UPVL). Methods: We evaluated the selected samples based on the results of the SVINT, the results of the vestibular-evoked potentials (C-VEMP and O-VEMP), and the results of the head impulse test (HIT) and we compared the results against the age of the patients. We calculated the timing between the onset of UPVL and clinical evaluation in days. The presence or absence of VEMP indicated the UPVL severity. UPVL and BPPV patients with spontaneous or pseudo-spontaneous nystagmus were compared. Results: Statistical analysis showed changes in the FN and SPAV depending on age and the side of the application of the stimulus. We also observed that, in the UPVL, the severity of the disease modifies the SPAV, but not the frequency. Conclusions: The SVINT is a simple, reliable, and straightforward test that, if evaluated instrumentally, can show significant differences with aging. Heart myocardia are critical to the facilitation of heart pumping and blood circulating around the body. The biaxial mechanical testing of the left ventricle (LV) has been extensively utilised to build the computational model of the whole heart with little importance given to the unique mechanical properties of the right ventricle (RV) and cardiac septum (SPW). Most of those studies focussed on the LV of the heart and then applied the obtained characteristics with a few modifications to the right side of the heart. However, the assumption that the LV characteristics applies to the RV has been contested over time with the realisation that the right side of the heart possesses its own unique mechanical properties that are widely distinct from that of the left side of the heart. This paper evaluates the passive mechanical property differences in the three main walls of the rat heart based on biaxial tensile test data. Fifteen mature Wistar rats weighing 225 ± 25 g were euthanised by inhalation of 5% halothane. The hearts were excised after which all the top chambers comprising the two atria, pulmonary and vena cava trunks, aorta, and valves were all dissected out. Then, 5 × 5 mm sections from the middle of each wall were carefully dissected with a surgical knife to avoid overly pre-straining the specimens. The specimens were subjected to tensile testing. The elastic moduli, peak stresses in the toe region and stresses at 40% strain, anisotropy indices, as well as the stored strain energy in the toe and linear region of up to 40% strain were used for statistical significance tests. The main findings of this study are: (1) LV and SPW tissues have relatively shorter toe regions of 10–15% strain as compared to RV tissue, whose toe region extends up to twice as much as that; (2) LV tissues have a higher strain energy storage in the linear region despite being lower in stiffness than the RV; and (3) the SPW has the highest strain energy storage along both directions, which might be directly related to its high level of anisotropy. These findings, though for a specific animal species at similar age and around the same body mass, emphasise the importance of the application of wall-specific material parameters to obtain accurate ventricular hyperelastic models. Climate change has several negative effects on health, including cardiovascular disease. Many studies have considered the effect of temperature on cardiovascular disease and found that there is an association between extreme levels of temperature, cold and hot, and cardiovascular disease. However, the number of articles that have studied the change point or the threshold in temperature is very limited. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no studies focusing on detecting and testing the significance of the change point in the temperature–cardiovascular relationship. Identifying the change point in cities may help to design better adaptive strategies in view of predicted weather changes in the future. Knowing the change points of temperature may prevent further mortality associated with the weather changes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a unified approach that simultaneously estimates the semiparametric relationship and detects the significant point. A semiparametric generalized change point single index model is introduced as our unified approach by adjusting for several weather variables. A permutation-based testing procedure to detect the change point is introduced as well. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm. In this brief Opinion paper, the term "muco-microbiotic layer" is introduced to describe the innermost layer of the intestinal wall. This layer may contribute not only to the overall health of the bowel, but also to that of extraintestinal organs. Its constituents, in terms of soluble molecules and nanovesicles, need to be studied further. This work provides density data (~1300 values) of 14 alcohols with up to five carbon atoms at p ∈ [0.1–40] MPa and T ∈ [278–358] K. The information obtained is modeled with a convenient reformulation of the Tait equation from which the volumetric coefficients, α and β, are derived both analytically and numerically. The general EoS containing α and β is also used for checking the consistency of the hypothesis on the invariability of the cited thermophysic parameters. The results obtained can be considered reliable because of the low estimated errors between the experimental data and those of the literature, which are below 0.4% for volume, while for the volumetric coefficients there is always a reference diverging 10%, or less, from the proposed model estimations. By including the averages of α and β into the general state of equation the errors increase, being <15%, compared to those based on the Tait equation. Hence, the assumption on the stability of the volumetric coefficients in this working interval is sufficient to make rough estimations of the molar volume of the selected alcohols. Background: Ball skill performance changes over time during childhood and depends on the child's physical and psychological characteristics, environmental opportunities, and task constraints. The aim of this study was to examine whether different standardized ball skill-items measure similar constructs and whether results differentiate among age groups. Methods: A total of 250 children (6–10 years) were administered the Movement Assessment Battery for children second edition (MABC-2), the subtest upper-limb coordination of the Bruininks–Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency second edition (BOT-2), the tennis ball throw of the Fitness Test Battery (FTB), and the ball skills and overhead throw of the Performance and Fitness test (PERF-FIT). Results: Correlations among scores of BOT-2, FTB, and PERF-FIT ranged from fair to moderate, but correlations were low with the MABC-2. Principal component analysis retrieved three components: the first component contained catch, dribble, bounce, and throw items (MABC-2, BOT-2-SF, and PERF-FIT, respectively); the second contained throwing for distance (PERF-FIT and FTB); the third contained aiming (MABC-2). Most ball skill scores differed significantly between 6–7 and 7–8 years, but less between 8–9 years; the PERF-FIT discriminated best between age groups. Conclusion: Most ball skill items in motor tests belong to a comparable construct containing throw, dribble, bounce, and catch skills. However, aiming tasks belong to a separate category.
