This paper presents a review of papers specifically focused on the use of both numerical and machine learning methods for groundwater level modelling. In the reviewed papers, machine learning models (also called data-driven models) are used to improve the prediction or speed process of existing numerical modelling. When long runtimes inhibit the use of numerical models, machine learning models can be a valid alternative, capable of reducing the time for model development and calibration without sacrificing accuracy of detail in groundwater level forecasting. The results of this review highlight that machine learning models do not offer a complete representation of the physical system, such as flux estimates or total water balance and, thus, cannot be used to substitute numerical models in large study areas; however, they are affordable tools to improve predictions at specific observation wells. Numerical and machine learning models can be successfully used as complementary to each other as a powerful groundwater management tool. The machine learning techniques can be used to improve calibration of numerical models, whereas results of numerical models allow us to understand the physical system and select proper input variables for machine learning models. Machine learning models can be integrated in decision-making processes when rapid and effective solutions for groundwater management need to be considered. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neural, behavioral, and physiological systems of the brain. This disease is also known as tremor. The common symptoms of this disease are a slowness of movement known as 'bradykinesia', loss of automatic movements, speech/writing changes, and difficulty with walking at early stages. To solve these issues and to enhance the diagnostic process of PD, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been implemented for the categorization of subjective disease and healthy controls (HC) with comparable medical appearances. To provide a far-reaching outline of data modalities and artificial intelligence techniques that have been utilized in the analysis and diagnosis of PD, we conducted a literature analysis of research papers published up until 2022. A total of 112 research papers were included in this study, with an examination of their targets, data sources and different types of datasets, ML algorithms, and associated outcomes. The results showed that ML approaches and new biomarkers have a lot of promise for being used in clinical decision-making, resulting in a more systematic and informed diagnosis of PD. This study employs machine learning (ML) techniques to predict pedestrian compliance at crosswalks in urban settings in Jordan, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety and traffic management. Utilizing data from 2437 pedestrians at signalized intersections in Amman, Irbid, and Zarqa, four models based on different ML algorithms were developed: an artificial neural network (ANN), a support vector machine (SVM), a decision tree (ID3), and a random forest (RF). The results have shown that local infrastructure and traffic conditions influence pedestrian behavior. The RF model, with its excellent accuracy and precision, has proven to be an excellent choice for accurately predicting pedestrian behavior. This research provides valuable insights into the demographic and spatial aspects that influence pedestrian compliance with laws and regulations in the local environment. Additionally, this work highlights the ability of ML algorithms to improve urban traffic dynamics. Policymakers and urban planners, particularly with the rise of theories and trends toward the humanization of urban roads, should firmly establish this understanding among themselves to create environments that make pedestrians safer. This strategy could be a measurable solution for international urban situations if future research focuses on integrating these prediction models with real-time traffic management systems to improve pedestrian safety dynamically. (1) Background: The authenticity of eggs in relation to the housing system of laying hens is susceptible to food fraud due to the potential for egg mislabeling. (2) Methods: A total of 4188 egg yolks, obtained from four different breeds of laying hens housed in colony cage, barn, free-range, and organic systems, were analyzed using 1H NMR spectroscopy. The data of the resulting 1H NMR spectra were used for different machine learning methods to build classification models for the four housing systems. (3) Results: The comparison of the seven computed models showed that the support vector machine (SVM) model gave the best results with a cross-validation accuracy of 98.5%. The test of classification models with eggs from supermarkets showed that only a maximum of 62.8% of samples were classified according to the housing system labeled on the eggs. (4) Conclusion: The classification models developed in this study included the largest sample size compared to the literature. The SVM model is most suitable for evaluating 1H NMR data in terms of the hen housing system. This study focuses on predicting and optimizing the quality parameters of cookies enriched with dehydrated peach through the application of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. The purpose of the study is to employ advanced machine learning techniques to understand the intricate relationships between input parameters, such as the presence of dehydrated peach and treatment methods (lyophilization and lyophilization with osmotic pretreatment), and output variables representing various quality aspects of cookies. For each of the 32 outputs, including the parameters of the basic chemical compositions of the cookie samples, selected mineral contents, moisture contents, baking characteristics, color properties, sensorial attributes, and antioxidant properties, separate models were constructed using SVMs and ANNs. Results showcase the efficiency of ANN models in predicting a diverse set of quality parameters with r2 up to 1.000, with SVM models exhibiting slightly higher coefficients of determination for specific variables with r2 reaching 0.981. The sensitivity analysis underscores the pivotal role of dehydrated peach and the positive influence of osmotic pretreatment on specific compositional attributes. Utilizing established Artificial Neural Network models, multi-objective optimization was conducted, revealing optimal formulation and factor values in cookie quality optimization. Forecasting photovoltaic electricity generation is one of the key components to reducing the impacts of solar power natural variability, nurturing the penetration of renewable energy sources. Machine learning is a well-known method that relies on the principle that systems can learn from previously measured data, detecting patterns which are then used to predict future values of a target variable. These algorithms have been used successfully to predict incident solar irradiation, but the results depend on the specificities of the studied location due to the natural variability of the meteorological parameters. This paper presents an extensive comparison of the three ML algorithms most used worldwide for forecasting solar radiation, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), aiming at the best prediction of daily solar irradiance in a São Paulo context. The largest dataset in Brazil for meteorological parameters, containing measurements from 1933 to 2014, was used to train and compare the results of the algorithms. The results showed good approximation between measured and predicted global solar radiation for the three algorithms; however, for São Paulo, the SVM produced a lower Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE), and ELM, a faster training rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of using structural analysis parameters for estimating the higher heating value (HHV) of biomass by obtaining information on the composition of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose. To achieve this goal, several nonlinear mathematical models were developed, including polynomials, support vector machines (SVMs), random forest regression (RFR) and artificial neural networks (ANN) for predicting HHV. The performed statistical analysis "goodness of fit" showed that the ANN model has the best performance in terms of coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.90) and the lowest level of model error for the parameters X2 (0.25), RMSE (0.50), and MPE (2.22). Thus, the ANN model was identified as the most appropriate model for determining the HHV of different biomasses based on the specified input parameters. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate the potential of using structural analysis parameters as input for HHV modeling, which is a promising approach for the field of biomass energy production. Photovoltaic (PV) output power inherently exhibits an intermittent property depending on the variation of weather conditions. Since PV power producers may be charged to large penalties in forthcoming energy markets due to the uncertainty of PV power generation, they need a more accurate PV power prediction scheme in energy market operation. In this paper, we characterize the effect of PV power prediction errors on energy storage system (ESS)-based PV power trading in energy markets. First, we analyze the prediction accuracy of two machine learning (ML) schemes for the PV output power and estimate their error distributions. We propose an efficient ESS management scheme for charging and discharging operation of ESS in order to reduce the deviations between the day-ahead (DA) and real-time (RT) dispatch in energy markets. In addition, we estimate the capacity of ESSs, which can absorb the prediction errors and then compare the PV power producer's profit according to ML-based prediction schemes with/without ESS. In case of ML-based prediction schemes with ESS, the ANN and SVM schemes yield a decrease in the deviation penalty by up to 87% and 74%, respectively, compared with the profit of those schemes without ESS. In recent years, fuel cell (FC) technology has seen a promising increase in its proportion in stationary power production. Several pilot projects are in operation across the world, with the number of running hours steadily rising, either as stand-alone units or as part of integrated gas turbine–electric energy plants. FCs are a potential energy source with great efficiency and zero emissions. To ensure the best performance, they normally function within a confined temperature and humidity range; nevertheless, this makes the system difficult to regulate, resulting in defects and hastened deterioration. For diagnosis, there are two primary approaches: restricted input information, which gives an unobtrusive, rapid yet restricted examination, and advanced characterization, which provides a more accurate diagnosis but frequently necessitates invasive or delayed tests. Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms have shown considerable promise in providing accurate diagnoses with quick data collecting. This work focuses on software models that allow the user to evaluate many different possibilities in the shortest amount of time and is a vital method for proper and dynamic analysis of such entities. The artificial neural network, genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, random forest, support vector machine, and extreme learning machine are common AI approaches discussed in this review. This article examines the modern practice and provides recommendations for future machine learning methodologies in fuel cell diagnostic applications. In this study, these six AI tools are specifically explained with results for a better understanding of the fuel cell diagnosis. The conclusion suggests that these approaches are not only a popular and beneficial tool for simulating the nature of an FC system, but they are also appropriate for optimizing the operational parameters necessary for an ideal FC device. The aim of this study was to determine which supervised machine learning (ML) algorithm can most accurately classify people with Parkinson's disease (pwPD) from speed-matched healthy subjects (HS) based on a selected minimum set of IMU-derived gait features. Twenty-two gait features were extrapolated from the trunk acceleration patterns of 81 pwPD and 80 HS, including spatiotemporal, pelvic kinematics, and acceleration-derived gait stability indexes. After a three-level feature selection procedure, seven gait features were considered for implementing five ML algorithms: support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network, decision trees (DT), random forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbors. Accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were calculated. SVM, DT, and RF showed the best classification performances, with prediction accuracy higher than 80% on the test set. The conceptual model of approaching ML that we proposed could reduce the risk of overrepresenting multicollinear gait features in the model, reducing the risk of overfitting in the test performances while fostering the explainability of the results. Featured Application: The potential application of the work is to facilitate the perception of the properties of unconventional construction materials. That implies the correlation between the various constituent during the prediction. Earth-based materials have shown promise in the development of ecofriendly and sustainable construction materials. However, their unconventional usage in the construction field makes the estimation of their properties difficult and inaccurate. Often, the determination of their properties is conducted based on a conventional materials procedure. Hence, there is inaccuracy in understanding the properties of the unconventional materials. To obtain more accurate properties, a support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN) and linear regression (LR) were used to predict the compressive strength of the alkali-activated termite soil. In this study, factors such as activator concentration, Si/Al, initial curing temperature, water absorption, weight and curing regime were used as input parameters due to their significant effect in the compressive strength. Major League Baseball (MLB) is the highest level of professional baseball in the world and accounts for some of the most popular international sporting events. Many scholars have conducted research on predicting the outcome of MLB matches. The accuracy in predicting the results of baseball games is low. Therefore, deep learning and machine learning methods were used to build models for predicting the outcomes (win/loss) of MLB matches and investigate the differences between the models in terms of their performance. The match data of 30 teams during the 2019 MLB season with only the starting pitcher or with all pitchers in the pitcher category were collected to compare the prediction accuracy. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1DCNN), a traditional machine learning artificial neural network (ANN), and a support vector machine (SVM) were used to predict match outcomes with fivefold cross-validation to evaluate model performance. The highest prediction accuracies were 93.4%, 93.91%, and 93.90% with the 1DCNN, ANN, SVM models, respectively, before feature selection; after feature selection, the highest accuracies obtained were 94.18% and 94.16% with the ANN and SVM models, respectively. The prediction results obtained with the three models were similar, and the prediction accuracies were much higher than those obtained in related studies. Moreover, a 1DCNN was used for the first time for predicting the outcome of MLB matches, and it achieved a prediction accuracy similar to that achieved by machine learning methods. Machine learning (ML) is the technology that allows a computer system to learn from the environment, through re-iterative processes, and improve itself from experience. Recently, machine learning has gained massive attention across numerous fields, and is making it easy to model data extremely well, without the importance of using strong assumptions about the modeled system. The rise of machine learning has proven to better describe data as a result of providing both engineering solutions and an important benchmark. Therefore, in this current research work, we applied three different machine learning algorithms, which were, the Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict kyphosis disease based on a biomedical data. At the initial stage of the experiments, we performed 5- and 10-Fold Cross-Validation using Logistic Regression as a baseline model to compare with our ML models without performing grid search. We then evaluated the models and compared their performances based on 5- and 10-Fold Cross-Validation after running grid search algorithms on the ML models. Among the Support Vector Machines, we experimented with the three kernels (Linear, Radial Basis Function (RBF), Polynomial). We observed overall accuracies of the models between 79%–85%, and 77%–86% based on the 5- and 10-Fold Cross-Validation, after running grid search respectively. Based on the 5- and 10-Fold Cross-Validation as evaluation metrics, the RF, SVM-RBF, and ANN models achieved accuracies more than 80%. The RF, SVM-RBF and ANN models outperformed the baseline model based on the 10-Fold Cross-Validation with grid search. Overall, in terms of accuracies, the ANN model outperformed all the other ML models, achieving 85.19% and 86.42% based on the 5- and 10-Fold Cross-Validation. We proposed that RF, SVM-RBF and ANN models should be used to detect and predict kyphosis disease after a patient had undergone surgery or operation. This study proposed different techniques to estimate the isotope composition (δ18O), salinity and temperature/potential temperature in the Mediterranean Sea using five different variables: (i–ii) geographic coordinates (Longitude, Latitude), (iii) year, (iv) month and (v) depth. Three kinds of models based on artificial neural network (ANN), random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) were developed. According to the results, the random forest models presents the best prediction accuracy for the querying phase and can be used to predict the isotope composition (mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) around 4.98%), salinity (MAPE below 0.20%) and temperature (MAPE around 2.44%). Since their inception, biosensors have frequently employed simple regression models to calculate analyte composition based on the biosensor's signal magnitude. Traditionally, bioreceptors provide excellent sensitivity and specificity to the biosensor. Increasingly, however, bioreceptor-free biosensors have been developed for a wide range of applications. Without a bioreceptor, maintaining strong specificity and a low limit of detection have become the major challenge. Machine learning (ML) has been introduced to improve the performance of these biosensors, effectively replacing the bioreceptor with modeling to gain specificity. Here, we present how ML has been used to enhance the performance of these bioreceptor-free biosensors. Particularly, we discuss how ML has been used for imaging, Enose and Etongue, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) biosensors. Notably, principal component analysis (PCA) combined with support vector machine (SVM) and various artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms have shown outstanding performance in a variety of tasks. We anticipate that ML will continue to improve the performance of bioreceptor-free biosensors, especially with the prospects of sharing trained models and cloud computing for mobile computation. The classification of soils into categories with a similar range of properties is a fundamental geotechnical engineering procedure. At present, this classification is based on various types of cost- and time-intensive laboratory and/or in situ tests. These soil investigations are essential for each individual construction site and have to be performed prior to the design of a project. Since Machine Learning could play a key role in reducing the costs and time needed for a suitable site investigation program, the basic ability of Machine Learning models to classify soils from Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) is evaluated. To find an appropriate classification model, 24 different Machine Learning models, based on three different algorithms, are built and trained on a dataset consisting of 1339 CPT. The applied algorithms are a Support Vector Machine, an Artificial Neural Network and a Random Forest. As input features, different combinations of direct cone penetration test data (tip resistance qc, sleeve friction fs, friction ratio Rf, depth d), combined with "defined", thus, not directly measured data (total vertical stresses σv, effective vertical stresses σ'v and hydrostatic pore pressure u0), are used. Standard soil classes based on grain size distributions and soil classes based on soil behavior types according to Robertson are applied as targets. The different models are compared with respect to their prediction performance and the required learning time. The best results for all targets were obtained with models using a Random Forest classifier. For the soil classes based on grain size distribution, an accuracy of about 75%, and for soil classes according to Robertson, an accuracy of about 97–99%, was reached. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A statistical process control (SPC) chart is one of the most important techniques for monitoring a process. Typically, a certain root cause or a disturbance in a process would result in the presence of a systematic control chart pattern (CCP). Consequently, the effective recognition of CCPs has received considerable attention in recent years for their potential use in improving process quality. However, most studies have focused on the recognition of CCPs for SPC applications alone. Specifically, even though numerous studies have addressed the increased use of the SPC and engineering process control (EPC) mechanisms, very little research has discussed the recognition of CCPs for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. It is much more difficult to recognize the CCPs of an MIMO system since two or more disturbances are simultaneously involved in the process. The purpose of this study is thus to propose several machine learning (ML) classifiers to overcome the difficulties in recognizing CCPs in MIMO systems. Because of their efficient and fast algorithms and effective classification performance, the considered ML classifiers include an artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), extreme learning machine (ELM), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). Furthermore, one problem may arise due to the existence of embedded mixture CCPs (MCCPs) in MIMO systems. In contrast to using typical process outputs alone in a classifier, this study employs both process outputs and EPC compensation to ensure the effectiveness of CCP recognition. Operation rule plays an important role in the scientific management of hydropower reservoirs, because a scientifically sound operating rule can help operators make an approximately optimal decision with limited runoff prediction information. In past decades, various effective methods have been developed by researchers all the over world, but there are few publications evaluating the performances of different methods in deriving the hydropower reservoir operation rule. To achieve satisfying scheduling process triggered by limited streamflow data, four methods are used to derive the operation rule of hydropower reservoirs, including multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural network (ANN), extreme learning machine (ELM), and support vector machine (SVM). Then, the data from 1952 to 2015 in Hongjiadu reservoir of China are chosen as the survey case, and several quantitative statistical indexes are adopted to evaluate the performances of different models. The radial basis function is chosen as the kernel function of SVM, while the sigmoid function is used in the hidden layer of ELM and ANN. The simulations show that three artificial intelligence algorithms (ANN, SVM, and ELM) are able to provide better performances than the conventional MLR and scheduling graph method. Hence, for scholars in the hydropower operation field, the applications of artificial intelligence algorithms in deriving the operation rule of hydropower reservoir might be a challenge, but represents valuable research work for the future.
