Primary peritoneal cancer has characteristics similar to high-grade serous carcinomas of ovarian and fallopian tube origin. However, the relationship between endometriosis and primary peritoneal cancer is not well understood. This study focuses on a case of peritoneal cancer in a patient who had undergone hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy 5 yr before. In addition to morphology, there was a positive for TP53 in immunohistochemistry and homologous recombination deficiency test, which were similar to high-grade serous carcinomas. However, WT1 was negative in the tumor, and extensive endometriosis coexisted. To reveal the clonal relationship between tumor and endometriosis, we dissected 3 sites each from the tumor and endometriosis and performed whole-exome sequencing analysis. As a result, we found that the tumors were of identical origin. Contrarily, no shared mutations were found in the 3 endometriosis sites. Furthermore, several shared mutations were found between the tumor and 1 endometriosis tissue, showing that the tumor and 1 ectopic endometrial gland originated from the same clone. This study indicates that several peritoneal cancers may be derived from endometriosis. The posterior auricular nerve (PAN) is the first branch of the facial nerve after it leaves the stylomastoid foramen. The literature describing the anatomy of the PAN is very sparse. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to clarify the detailed anatomical features of the PAN and consider its clinical and surgical applications. The authors examined 10 sides from 6 fresh frozen adult cadaveric Caucasian heads. The PAN was observed as the first branch of the facial nerve in all specimens. During the dissection of the PAN, the posterior auricular artery was constantly near the PAN. Moreover, the PAN was located under the investing layer of deep cervical facia covering the sternocleidomastoid and mastoid process in all specimens. The diameter of the PAN was 0.82 ± 0.21 mm (range from 0.55 to 1.21). The distance from the stylomastoid foramen to where the PAN branched from the facial nerve was 0.40 ± 1.25 mm (range from 0 to 4.35). The distance from the location of this branching point of the PAN to the entering point of the PAN to any muscles was 28.03 ± 5.51 mm (range from 19.71 to 38.75). Understanding the anatomical features of the PAN is essential for performing surgical procedures in this region.

Supratrochlear nerve (STN) is a terminal branch of the frontal nerve arising from the ophthalmic nerve (V1). Compression of the STN by adjacent structures might result in migraine headaches. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship of the STN and trochlea for a better understanding of potential entrapment of the STN. Nineteen orbits from ten fresh-frozen cadaveric heads were dissected. The relationship of the STN and the trochlea was classified into three types: In type I, the STN passed lateral to the trochlea; In type II, the STN passed through the trochlea; In type III, the STN passed medial to the trochlea. Type I was found in 52.6% (10/19 sides), type II was found in 42.1% (8/19 sides), and type III was seen in 3.4% (1/19 sides). In type III, both the STN and infratrochlear nerve were identified as separate branches. The authors propose a new classification of the pathway of the STN based on its relationship with the trochlea. This study might shed light on headaches emanating from this region.

The zygomaticofacial branch (ZFb) of the zygomatic nerve passes through the lateral wall of the orbit anterolaterally and traverses the zygomaticofacial foramen (ZFFOUT). However, in terms of intraorbital course, only a few studies have focused on the orbital opening of the ZFb (ZFFIN) and related canal. Therefore, this study aimed to locate the orbital opening and exit of the ZFb of the zygomatic nerve. Twenty sides from 10 fresh frozen cadaveric Caucasian heads were used in this study. The vertical distance between inferior margin of the orbit and ZFFIN (V-ZFFIN), the horizontal distance between the lateral margin of the orbit and ZFFIN (H-ZFFIN), diameter of the ZFFIN (D-ZFFIN), the vertical distance between the inferior margin of the orbit and ZFFOUT (V-ZFFOUT), the horizontal distance between the lateral margin of the orbit and ZFFOUT (H-ZFFOUT), and the diameter of the ZFFOUT (D-ZFFOUT) were measured, respectively. The ZFFIN were located 5.1 ± 2.0 mm superior to the inferior margin of the orbit and 4.3 ± 1.6 mm medial to the lateral margin of the orbit. The ZFFOUT was located 1.2 ± 2.9 mm inferior to the inferior margin of the orbit and 1.1 ± 3.0 mm lateral to the lateral margin of the orbit. The diameter of the ZFFOUT was significantly larger than that of the ZFFIN. Additional knowledge of the zygomatic nerve and its branches might decrease patient morbidity following invasive procedures around the inferolateral orbit.

The mentalis (MT) and the incisivus labii inferioris (ILI), which are accessory muscles of the orbicularis oris (OO) muscle, form an intertwined and three-dimensionally related complex. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between the MT, ILI, and OO muscles via intraoral dissection. Twenty-two sides from 11 fresh adult Caucasian cadaveric heads were used, and the MT, ILI, and OO dissected under the surgical microscope. Next, measurements of the bony attachment were carried out on another 12 sides. The fibers of the MT were separated into 2 parts: a superior and an inferior part with the former coursing anteromedially and joining the inferior part of the OO. The latter coursed anteroinferiorly to the skin of the chin. The ILI traveled anterolaterally and joined the inferior part of the OO. Inferior labial branches of the mental nerves ran on the OO. There was a significant difference (P = 0.0001) between specimens that were edentulous or had severe periodontitis with regard to the distance from the alveolar ridge to the upper side of the quadrangle when compared with specimens with mild periodontitis. However, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between specimens that were edentulous or had severe periodontitis specimens with mild periodontitis with regard to the distance from the inferior border of the mandible to the lower side of the quadrangle. We believe that the observations of this study could help surgeons better understand the anatomy of the chin and minimize complications following surgical and other invasive procedures in this area.

The auriculotemporal nerve is one of the many branches of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. Of these, its superficial temporal branch has been most described. Although the parotid branches, secretomotor fibers to the parotid gland, are well known as the cause of Frey syndrome, there have been almost no descriptions of their anatomy. In this study, the authors dissected the parotid branches of the auriculotemporal nerve to elucidate their anatomy. A total of 10 sides from 7 adult and embalmed cadaver heads were used in this study. The specimens were derived from 3 males and 4 females, the age of cadavers at death ranged from 65 to 92 years old. Measurements included their diameter and the distance of their branching point from the main trunk of the auriculotemporal nerve from the middle of the tragus. Three of 10 sides had 2 parotid branches and 7 sides were found to have 1 parotid branch. The vertical distance between middle of the tragus to branching point of the parotid branch ranged from 1.79 to 16.17 mm. The horizontal distance between middle of the tragus to branching point of the parotid branch ranged from 3.03 to 12.62 mm. The diameter of the parotid branch ranged from 0.31 to 0.49 mm. An improved knowledge of the parotid branch of the auriculotemporal nerve might decrease injury to these structures with the potential for postoperative.

The efficacy of sliced costal cartilage chip grafts for the treatment of late posttraumatic enophthalmos was investigated. Surgery was conducted based on the method reported by Matsuo et al. in 1989. After making an incision in the lower eyelid, dissecting the subperiosteum of the medial orbital wall, orbital floor and lateral orbital wall was performed to the posterior of the orbit, and then costal cartilage chips were gradually grafted in a step-like configuration to the subperiosteum from a location posterior to the equatorial plane of the eyeball. At this time, as well as to the area of concave depression in the orbital bone caused by the fracture, grafts were made to the subperiosteum of the non-deformed medial and lateral orbital wall, to move all of the orbital tissue, including the eyeball, forward. This was performed for five cases of severe late posttraumatic enophthalmos. Among the five cases, there were four cases of severe orbital fracture and one case for which malignant orbital tumor extirpation and radiation therapy had been performed. Following surgery, although mild enophthalmos remained in three of the five cases, esthetically satisfactory results were obtained for all cases. Costal cartilage chip grafts were shown to be an effective method for the treatment of late posttraumatic enophthalmos.
