A generalization of the problem of writing on dirty paper is considered in which one transmitter sends a common message to multiple receivers. Each receiver experiences on its link an additive interference (in addition to the additive noise), which is known noncausally to the transmitter but not to any of the receivers. Applications range from wireless multiple-antenna multicasting to robust dirty paper coding. We develop results for memoryless channels in Gaussian and binary special cases. In most cases, we observe that the availability of side information at the transmitter increases capacity relative to systems without such side information, and that the lack of side information at the receivers decreases capacity relative to systems with such side information. For the noiseless binary case, we establish the capacity when there are two receivers. When there are many receivers, we show that the transmitter side information provides a vanishingly small benefit. When the interference is large and independent across the users, we show that time sharing is optimal. For the Gaussian case, we present a coding scheme and establish its optimality in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise limit when there are two receivers. When the interference power is large and independent across all the receivers, we show that time-sharing is again optimal. Connections to the problem of robust dirty paper coding are also discussed. This paper proposes a new method to improve re performance of intra-field interpolation which is the mos~ important element of deinterlacing method. Traditional edge- based methods were poor at determining accurate edge iirection which decides interpolation performance. The 7roposed method decides the direction and slope of edge based on locally adaptive-thresholded binary image to mprove efficiency and accuracy, and it also increased the ~orizontal size of search window to 15 for better direction ietermination at gentle slope. Compared to traditional edge- based methods, interpolation based on binary image, which is ,`enerated using the proposed method, leads to great erformance improvement. Marbling creates stone-like or intricate abstract decorations from inks floating on water or gel. Instead of using fluid dynamics to simulate marbling, a proposed method takes a mathematical approach with closed-form expressions. This method improves control, ease of implementation, parallelism, and speed, enabling real-time visual feedback and creation of vivid flowing animations. Users can start designs from a blank sheet, raster images, or videos. When starting with a blank sheet, this method can produce compact resolution-independent vector output. The transforms for the marbling operations all have inverse transforms. Forward application generates compact resolution-independent vector-based output; inverse application generates pixel-based output. In both cases, the closed-form expressions preserve the designs' quality and sharpness. Extensive comparisons with other digital marbling methods demonstrates this method's efficiency and effectiveness. Applications of this method include surface detail rendering for 3D objects, interactive video processing, and scene decoration. Nowadays, there is an increasing interest in using transformer monitoring systems. Some monitoring systems use models to predict the value of certain variables. One of the key variables to be monitored is moisture content in oil, as moisture has a high influence on transformer exploitation. In this paper, the theoretical foundation of a model for monitoring moisture in transformer oil is reported. The Moisture Model estimates moisture content in transformer oil under certain working conditions. Comparing the value of estimated moisture with the measured one, the model is able to detect failures producing an abnormal water content in the transformer. The Model considers the equilibrium relations between paper and oil, the transients that take place until the steady-state equilibrium is attained, and the water increase caused by the insulating paper ageing. In addition, the Model can alert to the possibility of oil saturation and the consequent free water formation in the transformer. Economic dispatch with valve-point effect (EDVPE) considered is presented as a more accurate model of the real problem compared to the conventional economic dispatch model. It is basically a non-convex, non-differentiable, and multi-modal optimization model with many local minima. Part I of the paper focuses on the local minimum analysis of the EDVPE. The analysis indicates that a local minimum consists of the singular points, the small convex regions, and the output of a slack unit that is dispatched to balance the load demand. Two types of local minima are identified and the second type could be ignored. To verify the rationality of the analyses, a traverse search has been performed to solve the EDVPE with and without considering the transmission loss on different test systems. All the simulation results support the analysis given in the paper. To effectively solve the EDVPE on a large-scale power system, based on the analysis presented in this paper, a new method, dimensional steepest decline method, is proposed in Part II of the paper. Development of smart grid technologies has created a promising atmosphere for smart cities and energy trading markets. Especially, traditional electricity consumers evolve into prosumers who produce as well as consume electricity in modern power electric systems. In this evolution, the electric power industry has tried to introduce the notion of local energy markets for prosumers. In the local energy market, prosumers purchase electricity from distributed energy generators or the other prosumers with surplus electricity via a local power exchange center. For this purpose, this paper proposes joint geometric clustering and truthful auction schemes in the local energy markets. The proposed clustering scheme is designed for distribution fairness of the distributed energy generator for serving prosumers, where the scheme is inspired by expectation and maximization based unsupervised learning. Moreover, this paper proposes an auction mechanism for truthful electricity trading in a local energy market. In order to guarantee truthful electricity trading, the proposed auction mechanism is constructed based on the Vickrey–Clarke–Groves auction, which was proven to guarantee truthful operations. The Hungarian method is also considered in addition to the auction. Algebraic topology studies topological spaces with the help of tools from abstract algebra. The main focus of this paper is to show that many concepts from algebraic topology can be conveniently expressed in terms of (normal) factor graphs. As an application, we give an alternative proof of a classical duality result of Kramers and Wannier, which expresses the partition function of the 2-D Ising model at a low temperature in terms of the partition function of the 2-D Ising model at a high temperature. This paper presents a fault-tolerant operation for dual three-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet machines (SPMSMs) that were both electrically connected on three winding phases and mechanically connected on one shaft. The open-phase fault-tolerant operation is considered in dual three-phase SPMSMs drive thus combining motor drive of three-phase and single-phase. The proposed method controls the torque of each motor with different phases using a single inverter. In order to control these motors, the torque and current are distributed between the motors with the specific ratio. Methods for minimizing torque ripple and copper losses and maximizing the output torque of the three-phase motor are stated in this paper. Accordingly, a system with cost-effective and enhanced reliability is proposed without any configuration adjustment or auxiliary switching devices. The mathematical analysis and experiments are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. While the initial aim of smart meters is to provide energy readings for billing purposes, the availability of these measurements could open new opportunities for the management of future distribution grids. This paper presents a multilevel state estimator that exploits the smart meter measurements for monitoring both low and medium voltage grids. The goal of this paper is to present an architecture that is able to efficiently integrate smart meter measurements and to show the accuracy performance achievable if the use of real-time smart meter measurements for state estimation purposes was enabled. The design of the state estimator applies the uncertainty propagation theory for the integration of the data at different hierarchical levels. The coordination of the estimation levels is realized through a cloud-based infrastructure, which also provides the interface to auxiliary functions and the access to the estimation results for other distribution grid management applications. A mathematical analysis is performed to characterize the estimation algorithm in terms of accuracy and to show the performance achievable at different levels of the distribution grid when using the smart meter data. This paper presents a unique methodology to calculate the filtering capacitances of the OpAmp already reported in the literature. The methodology aims to show that there is an optimal solution that can be used to increase the electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity of any OpAmp for a wide range of frequencies. By using this proposed methodology, an OpAmp structure that reduces the EMI effect is designed in standard 0.18\ \mu \textm mixed-mode CMOS technology. Detailed mathematical analyses and simulation results are presented and discussed. Simulation results show that the maximum EMI-induced offset voltage in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 1 GHz for the OpAmp is 4.4 mV. Modern electric grid usages extensive non-linear loads leading to the increased harmonic current injection in the system. This paper proposes a data-driven algorithm based on a sparse decomposition approach with the Overcomplete Hybrid Dictionary (OHD) and provides in-depth mathematical analysis to detect and mitigate harmonics in emerging electric power systems. The sparse decomposition method is widely used in image processing applications with significant advantages to big-data applications. However, its application is not properly addressed in electric grids’ applications despite massive data generation in a smart grid environment. Hence, in this paper, the performance evaluation of a sparse decomposition-based algorithm using a greedy approach is proposed and carried out in a real-time simulation environment for Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) application for the real-time detection, classification, and mitigation of PQ events to show its suitability and effectiveness. Finally, the experimental results on a small-scale laboratory setup are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed sparse-based control algorithm for DSTATCOM in real-time applications. The use of wireless sensor networks for the purposes of border surveillance is a very hot topic at the moment. Such a network comprises large numbers of sensor nodes, sparsely located over a wide terrain, where the generated data are collected by multiple sinks located in secure head quarters. Due to its importance and criticality, data disseminated through such a network is vulnerable to outsider attacks. Therefore, a location-dependent key management scheme could be employed in order to provide security in terms of confidentiality and authenticity. This paper presents a novel location-dependent key management protocol for multiple sinks (LKMP-MS) whose design is based on a cell reporters scheme. In this protocol, the generated report regarding any event contains three security levels. In particular, the third level is implemented as an endorsement of the set of cell reporters allocated inside each cell. Accordingly, the generated event report is accepted by the sink. As a result, the adversary would have to compromise all endorsement nodes and all cell reporters selected by all sinks in order to generate a fake report inside a particular spot. This paper introduces a novel algorithm to implement the required revocation for both compromised nodes and cells in order to overcome the possible consequences of these entities being compromised. In order to evaluate and compare the LKMP-MS with recent schemes, a mathematical analysis is implemented and a simulation environment is built based on Contiki and MATLAB to validate the mathematical analyses. This paper studies the impact of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wobbling on the coherence time of the wireless channel between UAVs and a ground user equipment (UE), using a Rician multi-path channel model. We consider two different scenarios for the number of UAVs: (i) single UAV scenario (SUS), and (ii) multiple UAV scenario (MUS). For each scenario, we model UAV wobbling by two random processes, i.e., the Wiener and sinusoidal processes, and characterize the channel autocorrelation function (ACF) which is then used to derive the coherence time of the channel. For the MUS, we further show that the UAV-UE channels for different UAVs are uncorrelated from each other. A key observation in this paper is that even for small UAV wobbling, the coherence time of the channel may degrade quickly, which may make it difficult to track the channel and establish a reliable communication link. Avoiding collisions is a crucial ability for unmanned vehicles. In this paper, we present the constant avoidance angle algorithm, a reactive method for collision avoidance. It can be used to avoid both static and moving obstacles by making the vehicle keep an avoidance angle between itself and the obstacle edge. Unlike many other algorithms, it requires neither knowledge of the complete obstacle shape nor that the vehicle follows a desired speed trajectory. Instead, safe vehicle headings are provided at the current vehicle speed. Thus, the speed can be used as an input to the algorithm, which provides flexibility and makes the approach suitable for a wide range of vehicles, including vehicles with a limited speed envelope or high acceleration cost. We demonstrate this by applying the algorithm to a marine vehicle described by a full kinematic and dynamic model in three degrees of freedom. We specifically consider vehicles with underactuated sway dynamics, where the vehicle velocity contains a component that cannot be directly controlled. Such dynamics can be highly detrimental to the performance of collision avoidance algorithms and need to be included in the design and analysis of control systems for such vehicles. In this paper, we compensate for the underactuation by including these dynamics in the underlying analysis and control design. We provide a mathematical analysis of sparse obstacle scenarios, where we derive conditions under which safe avoidance is guaranteed, even for underactuated vehicles. We furthermore show how the modular nature of the algorithm enables it to be combined both with a target reaching and a path following guidance law. This paper proposes an insulated two-stage ac–dc converter to be applied in unidirectional power flow systems. The two-stage structure is the combination of a Hexverter and a series-type 12 pulse rectifier. The key features of the proposed structure are inherited from the modular multilevel converter concept such as modularity, scalability, and expandability. Besides the topology, this article presents a complete control strategy based on the output (dc) voltage regulation and Hexverter's stored energy. In particular, an unusual method to regulate the Hexverter's branch energy unbalances is proposed. All currents in the Hexverter are controlled which increases the robustness for operation in harsh environments such as subsea systems. Mathematical analysis of the control loops is carried out to develop the necessary control-oriented models for each control loop. Compared with the conventional two-level dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter, the three-level DAB converter could operate with lower voltage rated switching devices and provide more control degrees of freedom, which enhances the control flexibility. This paper proposes a modulation strategy with five control degrees of freedom. In the previous work with multiple control degrees, the optimization strategies for efficiency or inductor current minimization are investigated; however, these strategies all need detailed mode analysis and complex mathematical optimization tools to obtain the optimal duty cycles. In this paper, an optimization strategy for the root-mean-square value of the inductor current is proposed. This method extracts the fundamental and third-harmonic components from the high-frequency voltages on both sides and adjusts the amplitude of the bridge voltages by the vector diagram to obtain the optimal duty cycles. The inductor current can be reduced significantly at light loads with the proposed strategy, so the efficiency of the converter can be improved. Moreover, the optimization process does not need the detailed operation analysis of the converter, nor does it require the complex mathematical optimization tools. This paper investigates interplay among storage overhead, bandwidth requirement, and security constraint in distributed storage. In the model used in our analysis, storage nodes are dispersed in multiple clusters. When a node fails, necessary content gets restored by downloading data from different nodes that may possibly be in other clusters. The bandwidth required for transferring data for node repair is assumed more scarce for cluster-to-cluster links than the links connecting intra-cluster nodes. Eavesdropping takes place on links across clusters only, and a fraction of the total number of clusters is assumed compromised. When a cluster is compromised, any repair traffic going in and out of it is eavesdropped. For this clustered model with eavesdroppers, we analyze the security of distributed storage systems (DSSs) and provide guidelines on designing system solutions for securing the data. First, under the setting of functional repair, we derive a general upper bound on the secrecy capacity, the maximum data size that can be stored in DSSs with perfect secrecy. In the practically important bandwidth-limited regime where the node storage size is equal to the repair bandwidth, the upper bound is shown to be achievable through proposed code constructions. Moreover, we obtain a closed-form expression for the required system resources-node storage size and repair bandwidth-to store a given amount of data with perfect secrecy. Second, we investigate the behavior of secrecy capacity as the number of compromised clusters increases. According to our mathematical analysis, the secrecy capacity decreases as a quadratic function until the number of compromised clusters reaches a certain threshold. Finally, based on the fundamental relationship between the system resources and the secrecy capacity, we provide a guideline on balancing intra- and cross-cluster repair bandwidths depending on the given system security level. The optimization of functions to find the best solution according to one or several objectives has a central role in many engineering and research fields. Recently, a new family of optimization algorithms, named quality-diversity (QD) optimization, has been introduced, and contrasts with classic algorithms. Instead of searching for a single solution, QD algorithms are searching for a large collection of both diverse and high-performing solutions. The role of this collection is to cover the range of possible solution types as much as possible, and to contain the best solution for each type. The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, we present a unifying framework of QD optimization algorithms that covers the two main algorithms of this family (multidimensional archive of phenotypic elites and the novelty search with local competition), and that highlights the large variety of variants that can be investigated within this family. Second, we propose algorithms with a new selection mechanism for QD algorithms that outperforms all the algorithms tested in this paper. Lastly, we present a new collection management that overcomes the erosion issues observed when using unstructured collections. Medical staff configuration is a critical problem in the management of an emergency department (ED) in Hong Kong (HK). Given the service requirements by HK government, it is imperative for the hospital managers to develop medical staff configuration in a cost-and-time-effective way. In this paper, the medical staff configuration problem in ED is modeled as minimizing the total labor cost while satisfying the service quality requirements. To solve this issue, we propose a highly efficient search method, called random boundary generation with feasibility detection (RBG-FD). The random boundary generation (RBG) is applied to efficiently identify good-quality solutions based on the objective value. The feasibility detection (FD) procedure is used to retain the probability of correct feasibility detection of each sampled solution at the desired level, which intrinsically allocates a reasonable number of simulation replications. To estimate the performance measures of the ED, a discrete-event simulation model is developed to reflect the patient flow. Using these techniques, the efficiency of identifying the optimal staff configuration can be significantly improved. A case study is performed in a public hospital in HK. The numerical results indicate significantly higher practicability and efficiency of the proposed method with different patient arrival rates and service constraints. Note to Practitioners This paper seeks to solve the problem of minimizing the medical staff cost constrained by certain service requirements [i.e., patients’ waiting times for treatment] at an emergency department in Hong Kong. In our formulation, these service requirements are characterized by some stochastic constraints. Most of the existing random search methods concentrate on the computing efforts in the neighborhood of the best-so-far solutions in order to obtain good-quality solutions. Due to the special structure of this problem and ease of computing the objective values, we proposed an efficient random search approach that iteratively identifies a solution with a better objective value than that of the current best solution. Experimental studies demonstrate the significantly higher efficiency of this method. Driven by the massively growing applications in Internet of Things (IoT) and the new requirements of the six generation (6G) wireless network, the amount of terrestrial mobile devices (TMDs) and data traffic in wireless communications have increased explosively. Consequently, the integrated terrestrial-satellite relay networks (ITSRNs) have emerged to address the issue of the huge wireless traffic with limited allocated resources, which attracts extensive research attention to the field of IoT. Limited improvement of system throughput is realized by configuring terrestrial relays (TR) in the previous works. In this paper, by introducing an aerial relay (AR), we propose a novel structure of ITSRN and investigate the system throughput maximization and energy consumption minimization problems by jointly optimizing power allocation and AR altitude. Specifically, the system implementation includes two periods: satellite to relay (S-R) period and satellite to devices (S-D) period. To maximize the overall system throughput, we propose a joint optimization scheme of the power allocation and altitude of AR. Due to its non-convexity, a bilevel programming method is proposed to obtain the global optimal solution, where the closed-form expressions of power allocation and the optimal altitude of AR are derived. Subsequently, we investigate the energy consumption minimization problem during S-R period, which is formulated as a convex problem. We propose a low complexity algorithm and derive the optimal closed-form solution based on the rigorous mathematical analysis. This paper considers the phenomenon of distinct regional frequencies recently observed in some power systems. First, a reduced-order mathematical model describing this behaviour is developed. Then, techniques to solve the model are discussed, demonstrating that the post-fault frequency evolution in any given region is equal to the frequency evolution of the Centre Of Inertia plus certain inter-area oscillations. This finding leads to the deduction of conditions for guaranteeing frequency stability in all regions of a power system, a deduction performed using a mixed analytical-numerical approach that combines mathematical analysis with regression methods on simulation samples. The proposed stability conditions are linear inequalities that can be implemented in any optimisation routine allowing the co-optimisation of all existing ancillary services for frequency support: inertia, multi-speed frequency response, load damping and an optimised largest power infeed. The conservation voltage reduction (CVR) and load modelling have acquired a renewed interest in reassessing the CVR capabilities and load model parameters for renewable-rich distribution networks. The underlying theoretical views behind the changes in load model parameters and subsequent CVR capabilities in the distribution networks caused by the high penetration of renewable generation have yet to be explored. This research has presented a mathematical analysis of equivalent network impedance with integrated distributed generations (DG) and further established a relationship of the equivalent network impedance with the static load model parameters and CVR to accurately assess the impact of DGs on the CVR. Then, this paper has demonstrated various case studies with IEEE 33 bus network to analyze and validate the changes in static load model parameters due to the integration of renewable DGs and batteries into the balanced and unbalanced power systems. The obtained results verify the increased CVR capabilities of a distribution network, caused by the higher active power exponent in the load model parameters, as affected by the integration of renewable DGs. This paper addresses the design of two-stage successively refinable unrestricted polar quantizers for bivariate circularly symmetric sources in the entropy-constrained and fixed-rate cases. The proposed solutions are globally optimal when the thresholds of the magnitude quantizers are confined to finite discretizations of the interval $\left[0,\infty\right)$. The algorithm developed for the entropy-constrained case involves a series of stages, including solving the minimum-weight path problem for multiple node pairs in certain weighted directed acyclic graphs. The asymptotical time complexity is ${O}({K}_{1}{K}_{2}^{2}{P}_{max})$ , where ${K}_{1}$ and ${K}_{2}$ are the sizes of the sets of possible magnitude thresholds of the coarse and refined unrestricted polar quantizers (UPQs), respectively, while ${P}_{max}$ is an upper bound on the number of phase levels in any phase quantizer of the coarse UPQ. The solution algorithm for the fixed-rate case is based on solving a succession of dynamic programming problems for multiple coarse quantizer bins. The time complexity in the fixed-rate case amounts to ${O}({K}_{1}{K}_{2}{N}^{2}{N}_{1})$ , where ${N}_{1}$ is the number of cells of the coarse UPQ and $N$ is the ratio between the number of bins of the fine and coarse UPQs. Ji et al. (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 62(2): 849–869, 2016) first studied coded caching in device-to-device (D2D) networks, and proposed a D2D coded caching scheme, which is referred to as the JCM scheme. In practice, we prefer to design a scheme with its two important targets, i.e., the rate (the maximal total amount of transmission) and packet number ${F}$ , as small as possible. In this paper, we first propose a simple array called D2D placement delivery array (DPDA) to characterize the placement phase and the delivery phase in D2D networks. Consequently, some D2D coded caching schemes can be realized by an appropriate DPDA. Second, a lower bound on the rate of a DPDA is derived. And, we show that the JCM scheme achieves our lower bound. However, it is well known that its packet number ${F}$ increases exponentially with the number of users ${K}$. So, we propose two classes of new schemes by constructing DPDAs. One reduces the packet number exponentially with K compared with the JCM scheme while keeping the rate near to our lower bound. $Z$ -complementary code set (ZCCS), an extension of perfect CCs, refers to a set of 2-D matrices having zero correlation zone properties. ZCCS can be used in various multi-channel systems to support, for example, quasi-synchronous interference-free multicarrier code-division multiple access communication and optimal channel estimation in multiple-input multiple-output systems. Traditional constructions of ZCCS heavily rely on a series of sequence operations which may not be feasible for rapid hardware generation particularly for long ZCCSs. In this paper, we propose a direct construction of ZCCS using the second-order Reed–Muller codes with efficient graphical representation. Linear complementary pairs (LCPs) of codes play an important role in armoring implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. One of the most common ways to construct LCP of codes is to use Euclidean linear complementary dual (LCD) codes. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of linear codes with $\sigma $ complementary dual ($\sigma $ -LCD), which includes known Euclidean LCD codes, Hermitian LCD codes, and Galois LCD codes. Like Euclidean LCD codes, $\sigma $ -LCD codes can also be used to construct LCP of codes. We show that for $q > 2$ , all $q$ -ary linear codes are $\sigma $ -LCD, and for every binary linear code $\mathcal C$ , the code $\{0\}\times \mathcal C$ is $\sigma $ -LCD. Furthermore, we study deeply $\sigma $ -LCD generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes. In particular, we provide the characterizations of $\sigma $ -LCD GQC codes, self-orthogonal GQC codes, and self-dual GQC codes, respectively. Moreover, we provide the constructions of asymptotically good $\sigma $ -LCD GQC codes. Finally, we focus on $\sigma $ -LCD abelian codes and prove that all abelian codes in a semi-simple group algebra are $\sigma $ -LCD. The results derived in this paper extend those on the classical LCD codes and show that $\sigma $ -LCD codes allow the construction of LCP of codes more easily and with more flexibility. Sparse linear inverse problems appear in a variety of settings, but often the noise contaminating observations cannot accurately be described as bounded by or arising from a Gaussian distribution. Poisson observations in particular are a characteristic feature of several real-world applications. Previous work on sparse Poisson inverse problems encountered several limiting technical hurdles. This paper describes a novel alternative analysis approach for sparse Poisson inverse problems that 1) sidesteps the technical challenges present in previous work, 2) admits estimators that can readily be computed using off-the-shelf LASSO algorithms, and 3) hints at a general framework for broad classes of noise in sparse linear inverse problems. At the heart of this new approach lies a weighted LASSO estimator for which data-dependent weights are based on Poisson concentration inequalities. This paper investigates a multi-terminal source coding problem under a logarithmic loss fidelity which does not necessarily lead to an additive distortion measure. The problem is motivated by an extension of the information bottleneck method to a multi-source scenario where several encoders have to build cooperatively rate-limited descriptions of their sources in order to maximize information with respect to other unobserved (hidden) sources. More precisely, we study fundamental information-theoretic limits of the so-called: 1) two-way collaborative information bottleneck (TW-CIB) and 2) the collaborative distributed information bottleneck (CDIB) problems. The TW-CIB problem consists of two distant encoders that separately observe marginal (dependent) components $X_{1}$ and $X_{2}$ and can cooperate through multiple exchanges of limited information with the aim of extracting information about hidden variables $(Y_{1},Y_{2})$ , which can be arbitrarily dependent on $(X_{1},X_{2})$. On the other hand, in CDIB, there are two cooperating encoders which separately observe $X_{1}$ and $X_{2}$ and a third node which can listen to the exchanges between the two encoders in order to obtain information about a hidden variable $Y$. The relevance (figure-of-merit) is measured in terms of a normalized (per-sample) multi-letter mutual information metric (log-loss fidelity), and an interesting tradeoff arises by constraining the complexity of descriptions, measured in terms of the rates needed for the exchanges between the encoders and decoders involved. Inner and outer bounds to the complexity-relevance region of these problems are derived from which optimality is characterized for several cases of interest. Our resulting theoretical complexity-relevance regions are finally evaluated for binary symmetric and Gaussian statistical models, showing theoretical tradeoffs between the complexity-constrained descriptions and their relevance with respect to the hidden variables. We consider the problem of single-round private information retrieval (PIR) from $N$ replicated databases. We consider the case when $B$ databases are outdated (unsynchronized), or even worse, adversarial (Byzantine), and therefore, can return incorrect answers. In the PIR problem with Byzantine databases (BPIR), a user wishes to retrieve a specific message from a set of $M$ messages with zero-error, irrespective of the actions performed by the Byzantine databases. We consider the $T$ -privacy constraint in this paper, where any $T$ databases can collude, and exchange the queries submitted by the user. We derive the information-theoretic capacity of this problem, which is the maximum number of correct symbols that can be retrieved privately (under the $T$ -privacy constraint) for every symbol of the downloaded data. We determine the exact BPIR capacity to be $C=(N-2B)/N \cdot (1-T/(N-2B))/(1-(T/(N-2B))^{M})$ , if $2B+T < N$. This capacity expression shows that the effect of Byzantine databases on the retrieval rate is equivalent to removing $2B$ databases from the system, with a penalty factor of $(N-2B)/N$ , which signifies that even though the number of databases needed for PIR is effectively $N-2B$ , the user still needs to access the entire $N$ databases. The result shows that for the unsynchronized PIR problem, if the user does not have any knowledge about the fraction of the messages that are mis-synchronized, the single-round capacity is the same as the BPIR capacity. Our achievable scheme extends the optimal achievable scheme for the robust PIR (RPIR) problem to correct the errors introduced by the Byzantine databases as opposed to erasures in the RPIR problem. Nodes in electric distribution networks are greatly differentiated and are very often nonlinear and/or unbalanced. They can create significant harmonic pollution, with harmonics that inevitably spread along the grid. Monitoring harmonic propagation and correlated power quality phenomena requires specific measurement devices and methodologies. Nevertheless, because of the unavailability of a rapid diffusion of synchronized and dedicated devices (due to technical and economic reasons) on every node and branch of the network, estimating the harmonic status of the entire grid by means of a complete or even redundant monitoring system can be practically unfeasible. A more feasible, though always meaningful, goal can thus be pursued, that is estimating the main harmonic sources in the network, rather than its complete harmonic status. This approach, of course, can be based on a simpler and cheaper upgrade of the distributed monitoring system. Even more, by considering the common scenario where the number of significant harmonic sources is lower than the number of loads connected to the grid, specific estimation procedures can be defined to further reduce the complexity of the monitoring system. In this scenario, this paper presents an efficient compressive sensing harmonics detector (CSHD) for the identification and the estimation of the principal pollution sources. Inverse analysis is a known mathematical approach, which has been used to solve physical problems of a particular nature. Nevertheless, it has seldom been applied directly for loss reconstruction of electrical machines. This paper aims to verify the accuracy of an inverse methodology used in mapping power loss distribution in an induction motor. Conjugate gradient method is used to iteratively find the unique inverse solution when simulated temperature measurement data are available. Realistic measurement situations are considered and the measurement errors corresponding to thermographic measurements and temperature sensor measurements are used to generate simulated numerical measurement data. An accurate 2-D finite-element thermal model of a 37 kW cage induction motor serves as the forward solution. The inverse model’s objective is to map the power loss density in the motor accurately from noisy temperature measurements made on the motor housing’s outer surface. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the adopted inverse methodology to variations in the number of available measurements is also considered. Immediately after the occurrence of a natural disaster, communication infrastructures used in daily life become temporarily unavailable. Under such a situation, intermittently connected mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) play an important role in providing post-disaster networking. While previous studies on such networks have mainly focused on one-to-one messaging applications, the importance of monitoring applications has become increasingly important in recent years. For monitoring applications, the key performance measure is given by the freshness of the information, rather than the traditional delay characteristics. In this paper, we present a mathematical analysis of the age of information (AoI) for intermittently connected MANETs, which captures the information freshness of monitoring applications. We further investigate basic principles in the network design based on the analytical results obtained.
