Hyperuricemia and its complications are severe risks to human health. Dietary intervention is considered an essential part of the management of hyperuricemia. Studies have reported that the intake of antioxidants has a positive effect on hyperuricemia. Here, we collected data from 8761 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for this analysis. Daily intakes of vitamins A, C, and E; manganese; selenium; and zinc were calculated as the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI). The participants were divided into four groups (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) according to the CDAI. Univariate analysis was used to assess the association of covariates with hyperuricemia. The association between the CDAI and hyperuricemia was evaluated using multinomial logistic regression, and its stability was determined by stratified analysis. Our results revealed that the CDAI has a significant negative association with hyperuricemia (Q2: 0.81 (0.69, 0.95); Q3: 0.75 (0.62, 0.90); Q4: 0.65 (0.51, 0.82); P < 0.01). The results of stratified analysis emphasize that this association between CDAI and hyperuricemia is stable. One of the most often utilized nanoparticles (NPs) in several technologies is zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs. However, these NPs are said to have harmful effects on the reproductive system. Thus, we designed this study to specify the potential preventive activity of vitamins (Vits) A, C, and E, as antioxidants, against toxicity of ZnO NPs in the testes of rats. A total of 54 Wistar rats were arranged in 9 groups of 6 and then orally received water (control 1), olive oil (control 2), Vit A (1000 IU/kg), Vit C (200 mg/kg), Vit E (100 IU/kg), ZnO (200 mg/kg), ZnO+Vit A, ZnO+Vit C, and ZnO+Vit E. To determine the amount of testicular injury, sperm analysis and histological evaluation were performed. In addition, oxidative stress status was examined using colorimetric and qRT-PCR methods. Our findings suggest that ZnO NPs cause adverse effects on sperm parameters and testicular histology. Furthermore, oxidative biomarkers (malondialdehyde and total oxidant capacity) were enhanced in the ZnO group. By contrast, the gene expression and activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx, and CAT) noted a remarkable decrease in the ZnO group regarding control (p < 0.05). However, oxidative markers were remarkably mitigated after combined treatment of ZnO NPs and Vits A, C, or E compared to the rats given ZnO NPs (p < 0.05). Additionally, compared to the ZnO NP group, the rats receiving Vits+ZnO NPs exhibit increased antioxidant enzyme activity and mRNA expression (p < 0.05). Microalgae are one of the most important sources of natural bioactive compounds, especially those revealing antioxidant activity such as β‐carotene. Thus, this study was to compare the effects of dietary Vitamin C (L‐ascorbic acid) or Vitamin E (α‐tocopherol) with β‐carotene extracted from Arthrospira platensis on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) on growth, feed utilization, blood indices, antioxidant activity, non‐specific immunological indices and related gene expression. Three hundred and sixty apparent healthy Nile tilapia (5.80 ± 0.286 g) were randomly distributed into four groups. Four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were performed. A control diet was compared against three experimental diets supplemented with Vitamin C (0.5 mg kg−1 diet), Vitamin E (1 g kg−1 diet) or β‐carotene (0.5 g kg−1 diet) for 10 weeks. According to the results, there was no significant difference in feed intake (p > 0.05) between experimental diets. Dietary Vitamins C and E and β‐carotene significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced the weight gain, final body weight, protein efficiency ratio, specific growth rate and apparent protein utilization in all groups, whereas the best FCR (p = 0.017) and the highest weight gain (p = 0.007) were detected in the β‐carotene diet. Fish survival rates differed significantly (p < 0.05) amongst treatments, whilst fish fed a diet supplemented with β‐carotene recorded the highest survival rate. The supplemental diet with β‐carotene boosted the values of the biochemical and haematological parameters (p < 0.05) compared with the control diet. The activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidant capacity (T‐AOC) in the liver (p = 0.0560; p = 0.0032; p = 0.0353 respectively) and tilapia muscles were higher in fish fed either β‐carotene or Vitamin E (p = 0.0579; p = 0.1494; p = 0.2145 respectively) than other groups. The highest values of SOD, CAT and immune globulin M‐2 gene expression (p < 0.05) were found in fish fed a diet enriched with β‐carotene. These results suggested that the dietary incorporation of β‐carotene had a superior impact on growth performance, haemato‐biochemical and immune‐oxidative stress biomarkers in addition to the associated gene expression of Oreochromis niloticus. Hippophae tibetana is valuable wild edible berry, which is utilized as a supplement of food, traditional‐folk medicine system by rural populace of the Johar valley, Pithoragarh district India. The study focused on quantitating the nutrient composition, polyphenols, and free radical scavenging activities of the specie (in different solvent extracts). Results represented a various concentration range of polyphenolics and antioxidants among studied solvents, and fresh berries exhibited good sources of polyphenols (phenolics 1.64; tannins 5.87; proanthcyanidins 1.47; flavonoids 5.74; flavonols 0.62 mg/g), antioxidants, and free radical scavenging activities (FRAP 9.55; DPPH 1.35; NO·1.14; ABTS 4.10; OH· 0.69 mM AAE/100 g), nutrients (carbohydrates 2.05; proteins 0.67; methionine 0.73; proline 1.03; sodium 0.37; potassium 3.0.25 mg/g) and vitamins (vitamin C 1.03; vitamin E 0.87; Vitamin A 0.59 mg/g), respectively, followed by dry berries and pomace. Outcomes of the study revealed that acetone and methanol are good for extraction for harnessing maximum potential from the species. Practical applications: H. tibetana has emerged as a potential source of nutritional and bioactive constituents, and moderate polarity solvents (acetone and methanol) are best for extraction and acetone should be prioritized for commercial utilization.In the present scenario, several communities worldwide are focused to consume natural antioxidant compounds for improving their health, immunity, and reducing the deficiency of malnutrition. The fresh berries of H. tibetana and their processed foodstuffs can be considered an option for fulfilling the basic requirements of nutrients in the future and will be helpful for reducing deficiency of malnutrition in the Himalayan populace.Present study highlighted that berries of H. tibetana are rich sources of various nutrients, polyphenols, and antioxidant contents and for harnessing maximum potential from the species their mass scale cultivation is required. Therefore, sensitization workshops and capacity‐building programs (for skill development) should be organized in the higher Himalayas for the promotion of cultivation practices/large‐scale plantation of H. tibetana in their suitable habitat (cold desert) through participatory approaches, also required to strengthen the sub help groups (SHG). Background. Antioxidants attracted long-standing attention as promising preventive agents worldwide. Previous observational studies have reported that circulating antioxidants are associated with reduced mortality; however, randomized clinical trials indicate neutral or harmful impacts. The association of long-term circulating antioxidant exposure with longevity is still unclear. Objectives. We aim to determine whether long-term circulating antioxidant exposure is causally associated with longevity in the general population using the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design. Methods. Genetic instruments for circulating antioxidants (ascorbate, lycopene, selenium, beta-carotene, and retinol) and antioxidant metabolites (ascorbate, alpha-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol, and retinol) were identified from the largest up-to-date genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Summary statistics of these instruments with individual survival to the 90th vs. 60th percentile age (11,262 cases and 25,483 controls) and parental lifespan (N = 1,012,240 individuals) were extracted. The causal effect was estimated using the inverse-variance weighted method in the main analysis and complemented by multiple sensitivity analyses to test the robustness of results. Results. We found that genetically determined higher concentration of circulating retinol (vitamin A) metabolite was casually associated with a higher odds of longevity (OR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.02–1.13; P < 0.01) and increased parental lifespan (lifespan years per 10-fold increase: 0.17; 95% CI, 0.07–0.27; P < 0.01). Present evidence did not support a causal impact of circulating ascorbate (vitamin C), tocopherol (vitamin E), lycopene, selenium or beta-carotene on life expectancy. No evidence was identified to show the pleiotropic effects had biased the results. Conclusions. Long-term higher exposure to retinol metabolite is causally associated with longevity in the general population. In this study, the content of vitamins and of toxic and beneficial (macro- and micro-) minerals in milk from yaks raised at different altitudes (3,215, 4,340, and 5,410 m) was investigated. For comparison, the components in cow's milk were also measured. At higher altitudes, a significant (P < 0:05) increase in vitamin A and vitamin E was observed in the yak's milk, whereas the opposite was observed for vitamin B1 and vitamin B2. No significant statistical difference in vitamin C, Ca, P, Na, K, and Mg concentrations was observed in milk from yaks raised at different altitudes. The concentrations of Zn in milk from yaks raised at different altitudes showed no statistical difference, whereas the Mn and Fe concentrations in milk from yaks raised at 3,215m were lower than those raised at higher altitudes. The concentrations of Pb and Cd in yak's milk did not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations (Codex Alimentarius Commission), whereas their concentrations were higher in milk from yaks raised at 3,215m than at higher altitudes. Systematic granulomatosis is a chronic disease that affects the majority of farmed meagre (A. regius). Nutritional imbalances and overcrowding can increase the risk to suffer oxidative stress, and consequently, impact the incidence of granulomatosis. In order to evaluate this, juvenile meagre were fed five isolipidic (16.7%) and isoproteic (49.6%) fish meal and fish oil‐based feeds prepared by adding different levels of vitamin C, minerals (Mn, Zn, Se) with constant vitamin E and K (300 and 35 mg/kg respectively): Diet KEC (100 mg/kg C), Diet KEC+Mn/Zn/Se (100 mg/kg C, 40 mg/kg Mn, 200 mg/kg Zn, 1.5 mg/kg Se), Diet KECC (600 mg/kg C), Diet KECCC (1200 mg/kg C), Diet KECCCC (3200 mg/kg C). All diets were tested at 3.20 kg/m3, but diets KECC and KECCCC were also tested at 6.20 kg/m3. Growth performance was only affected by stocking density, being lower at high density. The percentage of fish with granulomas was significantly lower in fish fed with the highest dietary vitamin C contents (KECCC and KECCCC) at low density. TBARS content was correlated with the percentage of granulomas in the liver (R2 = 0.9439, y = 0.003x − 0.1242) denoting the involvement of an imbalance oxidative status in the appearance of granulomas. The present results show that high levels of vitamin C (1200–3200 mg/kg C) and low stock density (3.20 kg/m3) favours the growth of juvenile meagre, reducing the lipid peroxidation indicators and decreasing the incidence of granulomas, which confirms that this pathology is mostly triggered by the deficiency of antioxidant nutrients, particularly vitamin C. Adult koi carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were fed with feed supplemented with vitamin C at 200 mg/kg feed (T1), 400 mg/kg feed (T2) and 600 mg/kg feed (T3), and vitamin E at 200 mg/kg feed (T4), 400 mg/kg feed (T5) and 600 mg/kg feed (T6) at ad libitum for 60 days. Control (without vitamin inclusion) was also maintained. Observations were made on the growth performance, GSI and biochemical composition of gonads such as crude protein, crude fat, cholesterol and carotenoid once in 15 days. At the end of the experiment, fertilization was done to record the fertilization and hatching rate. The difference in the values was noticed among the male and female koi carp. Fish supplemented with vitamin E at 200 mg/kg feeexhibited higher growth in both male and female fish, and the fertilization rate and hatching rate were also higher in that group, and the values were significantly different (p < 0.05) and showed linear and quadratic trends. Inclusion of vitamin C at 600 mg/kg feed had shown higher lipid and carotenoid contents of female koi carp (p<0.05). This study aimed at evaluating the interactive effects of dietary lipid, vitamin E and vitamin C on growth performance, feed efficiency, muscle composition and antioxidant enzyme activity of Litopenaeus vannamei for a period of 56 days. A total of 384 shrimp with an initial weight of 5.3 ± 1.1 g were stocked in 24 tanks. Eight experimental treatments were designed with two different levels of lipid (70 and 140 g kg−1), VitC (0.5 and 1.0 g kg−1) and VitE (0.1 and 0.3 g kg−1). The results showed that high levels of dietary VitE and VitC improved the survival rate and the growth, feed and antioxidant indices in shrimp. The best shrimp growth performance was observed at 70 g kg−1 of lipid, 1.0 g kg−1 of VitC and 0.3 g kg−1 of VitE. Dietary lipid levels had a significant effect on muscle lipid, moisture and VitE contents. Furthermore, the interaction between dietary lipid, VitC and VitE had a significant effect on VitC and VitE contents of muscle. The lowest T‐AOC, SOD, CAT and GPX activity was observed at 70, 1.0 and 0.3 g kg−1 of dietary lipid, VitC and VitE respectively. The results also showed that the interaction of dietary VitE and VitC had a significant effect on growth and antioxidant enzyme activity of shrimp and improved their growth indices by reducing dietary lipid levels. Grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi, Algerian variety) essential oil obtained by hydro‐distillation was evaluated as a substitute for vitamin E for margarine. The obtained IC50 values were: 39.92 ± 0.18, 15.09 ± 0.02, and 4.42 ± 0.03 mg/ml by the 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl method, the reducing power and the β‐carotene/linoleic acid tests, respectively. These results were higher compared to those of the synthetic antioxidants. Values for BHA in DPPH and β‐carotene/linoleic acid assays were 0.158 ± 0.003 and 0.032 ± 0.000 mg/ml, respectively. The result of ascorbic acid for reducing power was 0.053 ± 0.001 mg/ml. Analysis of composition showed 128 volatile compounds. The limonene was the major compound (67.22%) followed by trans‐citral (5.39%) and isoauraptene (2.85%). All samples were fortified with 12.5, 50 and 100 µg/g of essential oil. The Rancimat test demonstrated that the lowest concentration of essential oil gave the best resistance to oxidation (22.6 hr). Novelty impact statement: Grapefruit essential oil was used as a substitute for vitamin E for margarine, and it gave better resistance to oxidation than control samples. Stevia leaves have been claimed to possess the highest antioxidant capacity among botanic foods, yet the antioxidant activity has been attributed to the polyphenols from Stevia leaves (PPS). However, most studies about the PPS were based on Stevia extracts that contain abundant polyphenols and flavonoids. The PPS excluded flavonoids were found to possess antioxidant activity similar to that of epigallocatechin gallate, demonstrating stronger hydrophilic antioxidant activity and stability than that of ascorbic acid (VC), vitamin E, or chlorogenic acid under the assayed circumstances. Both of the PPS and their antioxidant activity are very stable in various physical environments, but less stable in the presence of potassium sorbate or sucrose. Moreover the combination of PPS and VC could increase the antioxidant stability of either VC or PPS. Therefore, the PPS have the potential to be a natural, inexpensive, and abundant antioxidant that can be utilized in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics. Tetrapleura tetraptera is widely cherished in African traditional homes because of its alleged therapeutic and nutritional properties. This present study aimed at determining the levels of vitamin A, C, E, and beta-carotene and trace element (Fe, Cu, Mn, Co, Se, and Zn) concentrations and their extractabilities in the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit (mixture of pulp and seeds) of T. tetraptera. The total trace element concentration of Fe, Cu, Co, Mn, and Zn and their extractabilities (%) were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS), whereas UV-VIS spectrophotometer was used to determine selenium concentration. The trace element content (mg/kg) based on dry weight in the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit was Fe (162.00 ± 7.14, 115.00 ± 12.00, and 154.00 ± 25.20, respectively), Zn (31.60 ± 4.77, 43.40 ± 5.29, and 41.50 ± 8.97, respectively), Cu (16.10 ± 4.98, 11.90 ± 8.40, and 17.20 ± 14.50, respectively), Mn (55.30 ± 2.41, 156.00 ± 10.20, and 122.00 ± 5.29, respectively), Co (38.10 ± 6.40, 21.10 ± 7.15, and 44.00 ± 14.90, respectively), and Se (1.49 ± 0.17, 2.43 ± 0.28, and 2.97 ± 0.27 μg/g, respectively). The mineral extractabilities (%) in the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit of T. tetraptera were established to be in the order Co > Zn > Fe > Cu > Se > Mn. Also, the chromatographic method (HPLC) was used to evaluate vitamin E concentration, and vitamin C and concentration of beta-carotene were calculated from the obtained concentration of vitamin A using a conversion factor by the titrimetric method. From the results of vitamin analysis, a significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed among the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit for vitamin C and E. However, no significant difference (p > 0.05) was perceived among these plant parts for vitamin A and beta-carotene. This study has therefore revealed that the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit of T. tetraptera contain varying concentrations of vitamins and trace elements and has given many vital insights on which part of T. tetraptera to consume, as concentrations of these nutrients differ in the discrete parts of the fruit. Dietary lipid oxidation is a lasting concern to aquafeed manufacturers and aquaculture farmers. Here, we determined if there was an association between oxidized fish oil (OFO) and hepatopancreatic injury in Chinese mitten crab, and evaluated the alleviating effects of a combination of vitamins C and E on hepatopancreatic injury. There were significant reductions in the body weight gain, hepatopancreatic index, and feed efficiency in crabs that received OFO. Diets with OFO also resulted in reduced crude fat contents in the hepatopancreas and muscle tissues, and alternations in the hepatopancreatic fatty acid compositions, especially a reduction in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Moreover, dietary OFO exposure reduced the antioxidant defense and non‐specific immune response, caused hepatopancreatic injury, and even apparent whitening. An ultrastructural examination of the whitened hepatopancreas revealed that hepatopancreatic cells were injured at varying degrees following OFO exposure. The combination of vitamins C and E could efficiently maintain a constant fatty acid profile in the hepatopancreas exposed to OFO, thus alleviating OFO‐induced hepatopancreatic injury. In addition, a biochemical analysis indicated that a combination of vitamins C and E not only improved the antioxidant status by mitigating the harmful effects of oxidized oil, but also modulated non‐specific immune responses in the crab that received OFO. Overall, OFO‐induced hepatopancreatic injury may be alleviated by a dietary combination of vitamins C and E, and the feeding of rancid forage fish or diets that contain highly oxidized oil is likely a cause of hepatopancreatic necrosis that is frequently observed in farmed crabs. A 56‐day experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary vitamin C and vitamin E on the growth, antioxidant status and digestive enzyme activities of discus fish (Symphysodon haraldi; initial body weight: 7.96 ± 0.61 g and body length: 5.45 ± 0.65 cm). Animals were fed with 13 different diets including one control diet and 12 treatment diets containing four levels of vitamin C (magnesium‐L‐ascorbyl‐2‐phosphate; 40, 80, 120 and 160 mg/kg) crossed with three levels of vitamin E (DL‐α‐tocopheryl acetate; 40, 80 and 120 mg/kg). The results showed that the fish fed diets containing additional vitamin C (40 mg/kg) and vitamin E (80 mg/kg) showed higher specific growth rate, length growth rate, total antioxidant capacity and protease activity but had lower feed conversion ratio and total superoxide dismutase activity than those fed the control diet. Collectively, these findings suggest that the inclusion of additional 40 mg/kg of vitamin C and 80 mg/kg of vitamin E in the basal diet could have beneficial effect on the growth, antioxidant defence and digestion of S. haraldi. Breast cancer is the most frequent type of nonskin malignancy among women worldwide. In general, conventional cancer treatment options (i.e., surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, biological therapy, and hormone therapy) are not completely effective. Recurrence and other pathologic situations are still an issue in breast cancer patients due to side effects, toxicity of drugs in normal cells, and aggressive behaviour of the tumours. From this point of view, breast cancer therapy and adjuvant methods represent a promising and challenging field for researchers. In the last few years, the use of some types of complementary medicines by women with a history of breast cancer has significantly increased such as phytotherapeutic products and nutritional supplements. Despite this, the use of such approaches in oncologic processes may be problematic and patient’s health risks can arise such as interference with the efficacy of standard cancer treatment. The present review gives an overview of the most usual phytotherapeutic products and nutritional supplements with application in breast cancer patients as adjuvant approach. Regardless of the contradictory results of scientific evidence, we demonstrated the need to perform additional investigation, mainly well-designed clinical trials in order to establish correlations and allow for further validated outcomes concerning the efficacy, safety, and clinical evidence-based recommendation of these products. l-Ascorbic acid, α -tocopherol, procyanidin B3, β-carotene, and astaxanthin are five classic dietary antioxidants. In this study, the interaction between them and lysozyme was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular modeling methods. The quenching mechanisms of lysozyme by them are all static quenching at lower concentrations of antioxidants, but at higher concentrations, predominantly by the 'sphere of action' mechanisms. The binding constants of lysozyme-antioxidants systems are in the following order as: astaxanthin>β-carotene > procyanidin B3 > l-ascorbic acid>α-tocopherol. Thermodynamic analysis reveals that the binding process of α-tocopherol to lysozyme is synergistically driven by enthalpy and entropy. For the other four antioxidants-lysozyme systems, the binding processes are all entropy process. Synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy shows that the five antioxidants may induce microenvironmental changes of lysozyme. Molecular docking results reveal that the five antioxidants bind into the enzyme active site and lysozyme activity is inhibited, in accordance with the results of lysozyme activity experiment. Practical applications Antioxidants are used worldwide as food additives to protect foodstuffs against deterioration caused by oxidation, such as fat rancidity and color changes. Dietary antioxidant is considered to be a safe natural product. However, it may act as an antinutritional factor, in terms of the inhibition of proteases, when ingested in excess. Lysozyme with high natural abundance is an enzyme known for its unique ability to damage bacterial cell walls, thereby providing protection against bacterial infections. When the diverse endogenous and exogenous ligands enter into the human body, ligand-lysozyme conjugation can be observed. Therefore, lysozyme is selected to investigate the binding characteristics of five classic dietary antioxidants, which is critical in order to understand their possible delivery, consequent availability, and relevant health risks. Despite the interest of meagre (Argyrosomus regius) as a fast-growing candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture diversification, there is a lack of information on nutrition along larval development. Importance of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) and the antioxidant vitamins E and vitamin C has not been investigated yet in this species. Six diets with two levels of HUFA (0.4% and 3% dw), two of vitamin E (1500 and 3000 mg kg-1) and two of vitamin C (1800 and 3600 mg kg-1) were fed to 15 dah meagre larvae. Larval growth in total length and dry body weight was significantly lowest in larvae fed diet 0.4/150/180 and showed few lipid droplets in enterocytes and hepatocytes and lower HUFA contents than the initial larvae. Increase in dietary HUFA up to 3%, significantly improved larval growth and lipid absorption and deposition. Besides, among fish fed 3% HUFA, increase in vitamin E and vitamin C significantly improved body weight, as well as total lipid, 22:6n-3 and n-3 fatty acids contents in the larvae. Thus, the results showed that 0.4% dietary HUFA is not enough to cover the essential fatty acid requirements of larval meagre and a high HUFA requirement in weaning diets is foreseen for this species. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of dietary vitamin C ( VC) and E ( VE) supplementation on fillet quality of red sea bream fed oxidized fish oil ( OFO). Fish with an average body weight of 205.0 g were fed four test diets for 9 weeks. Control diet contained fresh fish oil ( FFO) with 100 mg kg−1 of VE and 500 mg kg−1 of VC ( FFO100E/500C). The other three diets contained OFO with varying levels of VE (mg kg−1) and VC (mg kg−1) ( OFO100E/500C, OFO200E/500C and OFO200E/1000C). After feeding trial, two fillets from each fish by hand filleting were stored in a refrigerator at 4°C for 96 h during analyses. Results showed that fish fed OFO increased fillet thiobarbituric acid reactive substances ( TBARS) and K-value, and decreased fillet VC and VE concentrations during storage time. Supplementation of VC did not have any detectable effect on fillet quality. Increasing dietary VE supplementation increased fillet VE concentrations, reduced fillet TBARS and K-value values of red sea bream. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of the immunostimulant combination ( IC) containing β-glucan, A3α-peptidoglycan, vitamin C and vitamin E on the growth performance, non-specific immunity and protection against Vibrio harveyi infection in cobia ( Rachycentron canadum). Fish were fed diets containing six graded levels of IC (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 g kg−1 diet) for 8 weeks. The results showed that the survival rate ranged from 81.1 to 84.4% with no significant difference among all the groups ( P > 0.05) after the feeding experiment. Dietary IC significantly increased the specific growth rate ( SGR), serum lysozyme, alternative complement pathway ( ACH50) activity, phagocytosis percentage ( PP) and respiratory burst activity of head kidney macrophages of cobia. Moreover, feeding of supplemented diets containing 3.0 g kg−1 IC resulted in significantly lower mortality against the pathogens, V. harveyi compared with the control group. To elevate the growth and immune resistance ability of cobia, the optimal dose of dietary IC administration, determined by second-order polynomial regression analysis was 3.43 and 2.71 g kg−1 diet, respectively, on the basis of the SGR and mortality after challenge with V. harveyi. Migraine is the most common form of headache disorder globally. The etiology of migraine is multifactorial, with genetic components and environmental interactions considered to be the main causal factors. Some researchers postulate that deficits in mitochondrial energy reserves can cause migraine or an increase in homocysteine levels can lead to migraine attacks; therefore, vitamins could play a vital role in migraine prevention. For instance, riboflavin influences mitochondrial dysfunction and prevents migraine. Genes such as flavoenzyme 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), especially the C677T variant, have been associated with elevated plasma levels of homocysteine and migraine with aura. Homocysteine catalyzation requires the presence of vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid, which can decrease the severity of migraine with aura, making these vitamins potentially useful prophylactic agents for treating migraine with aura. Menstrual migraine, on the other hand, is associated with increased prostaglandin (PG) levels in the endometrium, indicating a role for vitamin E, which is an anti-PG. Vitamin C can also be used as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species for treating neurogenic inflammation in migraine patients. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. The majority of cases do not arise from purely genetic factors, implicating an important role of environmental factors in disease pathogenesis. Well-established environmental toxins important in PD include pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals. However, many toxicants linked to PD and used in animal models are rarely encountered. In this context, other factors such as dietary components may represent daily exposures and have gained attention as disease modifiers. Several in vitro, in vivo, and human epidemiological studies have found a variety of dietary factors that modify PD risk. Here, we critically review findings on association between dietary factors, including vitamins, flavonoids, calorie intake, caffeine, alcohol, and metals consumed via food and fatty acids and PD. We have also discussed key data on heterocyclic amines that are produced in high-temperature cooked meat, which is a new emerging field in the assessment of dietary factors in neurological diseases. This study investigated the effects of the co-supplementation of vitamins C (0, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1) and E (0, 62.5, and 125 mg kg−1) on the growth performance, haematology and the modulation of blood stress indicators and immune parameters in hybrid catfish ( Clarias macrocephalus × Clarias gariepinus) under combinations of thermal and acidic stress. Supplementation of vitamins C and E influenced the growth, haematological indices, serum chloride, plasma protein and immune parameters (lysozyme, total immunoglobulin and alternative complement haemolytic assay) ( P < 0.05). Although vitamins C and E did not prevent a significant reduction in serum chloride, they minimized not only the modulation of blood glucose and plasma protein, but also the reduction in immune parameters ( P < 0.05) owing to stress. Our results demonstrated that co-supplementation of 500 mg kg−1 vitamin C and 125 mg kg−1 vitamin E, or 1000 mg kg−1 vitamin C alone, for four weeks and co-supplementation of both vitamins at low levels (vitamins C at 500 mg kg−1 and E at 62.5 mg kg−1) for eight weeks had beneficial effects on the growth, amelioration of stress-mediated adverse changes in the physiological and immunosuppressive responses of hybrid catfish under stressful conditions. Reference interval of all haematological and biological analytes should be measured for every population because of the huge diversity in genetic make-up, dietary habits. The coverage interval of antioxidant vitamins (vitamin C and α-tocopherol) in the plasma and serum of reference Bengali population was determined and compared with the reference intervals of antioxidant vitamins in the established literature. Adult healthy volunteers from 18 to 68 years of age underwent extensive clinical and investigational procedure and were included in the study. Vitamin C and α-tocopherol were estimated using simple Spectrophotometric method. Of the 71 healthy Bengali volunteers participated, 31 were males and 40 were females. The mean concentration of plasma vitamin C was found to be 0.65mg/dL. The mean α-tocopherol was found 6.35mg/L (14.74 Μmol/L) in the study population higher than the normal threshold value for α-tocopherol but lower than other populations. The study data enabled us to determine the gender nonspecific coverage interval of antioxidant vitamins, and the intervals were lower than the established reference interval in other populations. What is known and Objective: Helicobacter pylori eradication rates of currently accepted triple therapy regimens vary between geographic locations and do not exceed 70-80%. Eradication rates are much lower in locations where uncontrolled antibiotic use is common such as Turkey. In the present study, we aimed to test whether supplementing vitamins C and E to standard triple therapy, including a proton pump inhibitor plus amoxicillin plus clarithromycin, increased the H. pylori eradication rate. Methods: Two hundred patients infected with H. pylori were randomized into two groups in an open-label trial. In group A, patients ( n = 160) were given standard triple therapy, including lansoprazole 30 mg BID plus amoxicillin 1000 mg BID plus clarithromycin 500 mg BID for 14 days, plus vitamin C 500 mg BID plus vitamin E 200 IU BID for 30 days. In group B, patients ( n = 40) were given standard triple therapy for 14 days. The success of H. pylori eradication was defined as a negative 14C-urea breath test result, 4-6 weeks after the completion of therapy. Comaprisons were by both intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analysis. Results and Discussion: Two hundred patients (137 women, 63 men) were analysed using ITT analysis and 195 patients completed the study. In group A, H. pylori eradication was achieved in 132 of the 160 patients (82·5%) included in ITT analysis and 132 of the 157 patients (84%) included in PP analysis. In group B, H. pylori eradication was achieved in 18 of the 40 patients (45%) included in ITT analysis and 18 of the 38 patients (47·4%) included in PP analysis. Eradication rates were significantly higher in group A than in group B ( P < 0·005). Eradication rates were not statistically significant between men and women in both groups. What is new and Conclusion: Adding vitamins C and E to standard triple therapy increases the eradication rate of H. pylori. Various efforts have been made in past in order to predict the underlying mechanism of pesticide-induced toxicity using in vitro and animal models, however, these predictions may or may not be directly correlated with humans. The present study was designed to investigate the carbofuran induced genotoxicity and its amelioration by vitamins C and E by treating human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) with different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 3.75 and 5.0 μM) of this compound. The treatment of PBLs with carbofuran displayed significant DNA damage in concentration dependent manner. The carbofuran induced genotoxicity could be ameliorated to considerable extent by pretreatment of PBLs with equimolar (10 μM) concentration of each of the vitamins C and E; the magnitude of protection by vitamin E being higher than by vitamin C. Also, it was found that the level of protection by these vitamins was higher when PBLs were treated with lower concentrations of pesticide. The significant DNA damage as observed by H_{2}O_{2}, a positive control in the present study, and its amelioration by natural antioxidants (vitamins C and E) lend an evidence to suggest that carbofuran would have caused genotoxicity via pesticide induced oxidative stress. Background. The nephroprotective effect of vitamins E and C or losartan against cisplatin (CP)- induced nephrotoxicity when they are accompanied by estrogen was investigated. Methods. The ovariectomized rats received estradiol valerate for two weeks. At the end of the first week, a single dose of CP (7 mg/kg, IP) was also administered, and they received placebo (group 1), vitamin E (group 2), vitamin C (group 3), or losartan (group 4) every day during the second week, and they were compared with another three control groups. Results. CP alone increased the serum levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Cr), and kidney tissue damage score (KTDS), significantly (P < 0.05), however at the presence of estradiol and CP, vitamin C, vitamin E, or losartan not only did not decrease these parameters, but also increased them significantly (P < 0.05). The serum level of superoxidase dismutase (SOD) was reduced by CP (P < 0.05), but it was increased when estradiol or estradiol plus vitamin C or losartan were added (P < 0.05). Conclusion. Obesity and metabolic syndrome increase the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Oxidative stress seems to be involved in the path physiology of cardiovascular complications of metabolic syndrome. In this study we investigated the effects of vitamins A, C, and E in the management of metabolic syndrome traits condition in albino rats fed with high salt diet. The rats were placed on 8% NaCl diet for 5 weeks and then supplemented with these vitamins for additional 4 weeks in the presence of salt diet. Supplementation with vitamins significantly (P < 0.01 ) decreased blood pressure of the rats as compared with the control. Supplementation also significantly (P < 0.05) reduced serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total antioxidant status as compared with untreated group. The percentage protection of the supplemented groups against atherogenesis indicated 55.50 ± 3.75%. Percentage weight gain indicated significant positive correlation with triglyceride, insulin resistance, and malondialdehyde while total antioxidant status and nitric oxide showed significant negative correlation. Salt diet significantly (P < 0.05) induced features of metabolic syndrome. The modulating effects of ascorbic acid (AA), vitamin E (E), and a combination of AA and E (AA + E) against eight-hour road transportation stress were investigated in 120 pullets during the hot-dry season. The result obtained showed that handling, loading and transportation induced lymphopenia, neutrophilia, liveweight loss, and mortality, which was alleviated by oral administration of AA, E, and AA + E at doses of 60 mg, 30mg, and 60+30 mg per kg bodyweight, respectively, 30 minutes before being loaded and transported. Themeteorological conditions recorded during the study period were higher (P < .05) than the thermoneutral values established for chickens in the zone. In conclusion, the administration of vitamins AA, E, and AA + E, especially AA, ameliorated the risk of adverse effects of handling, loading, transportation, and thermal stress in pullets during the hot-dry season. Effects of GSE and vitamins C and E on aspirin- and ethanol-induced gastric ulcer and associated increases of lipid peroxidation in rats were compared. Two experiments were conducted. Rats were randomized into eight groups: a negative control and seven groups that received aspirin or ethanol for ulcer induction: one positive control (vehicle) and six with VC, VE, or GSE (25 and 250 mg/kg). Ulcer indexes and gastric levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) were quantified. VC, VE, and GSE (25 and 250 mg/kg) decreased aspirin, and ethanol-induced ulcers and MDA values compared with positive control group. The magnitude of aspirin ulcer reduction was comparable for all treatments, and MDA decrease with GSE was higher than with VC and tended to be greater, albeit none significantly, than with VE. GSE was more effective than VC and VE for lowering the ethanol ulcers, while the decrease of MDA levels with GSE was greater than with VC, but comparable to that achieved with VE. GSE protected against ethanolinduced gastric ulcersmore effectively than VC or VE, while its protection against aspirin ulcers was comparable for all treatments. The antioxidant activities of crude extract of Phaulopsis fascisepala leaf were evaluated and compared with α-tocopherol and BHT as synthetic antioxidants and ascorbic acid as naturalbased antioxidant. In vitro, we studied its antioxidative activities, radical-scavenging effects, Fe2+-chelating ability and reducing power. The total phenolic content was determined and expressed in gallic acid equivalent. The extract showed variable activities in all of these in vitro tests. The antioxidant effect of P. fascisepala was strongly dose dependent, increased with increasing leaf extract dose and then leveled off with further increase in extract dose. Compared to other antioxidants used in the study, α-Tocopherol, ascorbic acid and BHT, P. fascisepala leaf extract showed less scavenging effect on α,α,-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and less reducing power on Fe3+/ferricyanide complex but better Fe2+-chelating ability. Lycopene, a very powerful antioxidant present in fruits and vegetables, is the most efficient quencher of singlet oxygen among the carotenoids. There are other natural antioxidants such as carotenoids, vitamin C, tocopherols and polyphenolics in fruits and vegetables that are consumed together and that therefore have potential for synergistic interactions. Synergistic effects were determined by combining lycopene with other antioxidants (vitamin E, vitamin C, β-carotene) in various ratios. A synergistic effect was observed when all four antioxidants were present in combination at high lycopene activity. A synergistic effect was also observed when vitamin E and vitamin C were used in combination at high vitamin E concentrations. It appears that certain combination ratios and concentration levels of these antioxidants have effects to enhance the antioxidant activity, compared to the individual compound, which suggests that similar combinations in the diet or in functional food products might provide greater health beneficial effects. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The composition and concentration of individual bioactive components in a mixture would affect the total bioactivity and function in food system and human body. It is necessary to develop a model system for water- and lipid-soluble compounds to understand and assess the interactions and synergistic antioxidant effects of lycopene with β-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E. The experimental results of synergistic effects as new approach could reveal the interactions among these antioxidants. The results provide a useful guidance in the formulation and development of functional food products that have high antioxidant and functional potential. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary levels of vitamins C (0, 100 and 2000 mg kg−1), E (0, 50 and 500 mg kg−1) and their interaction on the growth performance, liver contents of ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol, haematology and immune response of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. Each diet was fed to catfish in triplicate aquaria to apparent satiation twice daily for 12 weeks. The results indicate that the amount of vitamin E contained in the basal diet (23.1 mg kg−1) was sufficient to promote good growth, feed efficiency and survival, but its supplementation was needed to maintain high haematological values and liver vitamin E. Supplementation of vitamin C (100 mg kg−1) to the basal diet containing 10.5 mg kg−1 was required for good growth, feed efficiency, survival and prevention of vertebral deformity and optimum haematological indices. Liver storage of ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol increased with increasing dietary levels of each vitamin. Dietary vitamin E levels had no effect on liver ascorbic acid content, but increasing dietary vitamin C increased liver α-tocopherol. Although many cosmeceutical formulations contain vitamin C and/or vitamin E, very few are actually effective in topical application. First because there is only a low concentration, second because the stability is compromised as soon as the product is opened and exposed to air and light, and third because the form of the molecule (an ester or a mixture of isomers) is not absorbed or metabolized effectively by the skin. However, when a stable formulation delivers a high concentration of the nonesterified, optimal isomer of the antioxidant, vitamins C and E do indeed inhibit the acute ultraviolet (UV) damage of erythema, sunburn, and tanning as well as chronic UV photoaging and skin cancer. Abstract Fish fillet quality has been shown to be influenced by the level of antioxidants in preslaughter diet. Thus, an experiment was conducted to study the effect of different levels of vitamin E and C on the fillet quality of market-size reared turbot (Scophthalmus maximus ). Turbot of a mean initial weight of 347 ± 20 g were divided into four groups and fed commercial turbot diets (60% protein, 12% fat), supplemented with α -tocopheryl acetate (mg kg -1 ) and ascorbyl-2 monophosphate (mg kg -1 ) at the following dietary levels: 500/100, 1000/100, 100/1000, 100/100 respectively. Over a dietary supplementation period of 15 weeks, fish were fed to satiation and reached a final mean weight of 916 ± 29 g. α-Tocopherol levels increased significantly ( P < 0.001) in tissue (i.e. muscle, liver, heart and kidney) of fish fed diets containing elevated levels of α -tocopheryl acetate. In ice storage, fillets of these fish exhibited significantly lower ( P < 0.001) levels of lipid oxidation, and showed significantly less ( P < 0.001) colour deterioration (higher hue angle and lower chroma). Elevated dietary α -tocopheryl acetate levels had a negative effect ( P ≤ 0.001) on the concentration of ascorbic acid in muscle tissue. An increase in dietary vitamin C did not have any detectable effect on fillet quality. Prolonged feeding times had a negative effect on lipid oxidation ( P < 0.001) and colour deterioration ( P < 0.01). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of enriching Artemia nauplii with vitamin C (ascorbyl-6 palmitate) or vitamin E (α-tocopherol acetate), 20% w/w, together with a mixture of concentrated eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3) on the growth, survival, and stress resistance of fresh water walleye Stizostedion vitreum larvae. Either cod liver oil (CLO) or EPA/DHA ethyl esters concentrate was used as lipid sources in the Artemia enrichment. Walleye larvae were fed ad libitum for 40 days. At day 40, submersion in salt water (25 g L-1) was performed to evaluate larvae resistance to stress. EPA and DHA levels in walleye juveniles fed EPA/DHA-enriched Artemia increased significantly, by an average of 650% compared with fish fed non-enriched Artemia. A significant increase was found for vitamins C (71.8 ± 1.0 and 42.7 ± 1.2 μg g-1 wet weight (WW)) and E (17.0 ± 3.7 and 6.5 ± 0.9 μg g-1WW) concentrations in fish fed enriched and unenriched Artemia, respectively. Growth was comparable throughout treatments, whereas survival was significantly higher in fish fed CLO-enriched Artemia nauplii compared with fish fed Artemia nauplii enriched with EPA/DHA concentrate. The addition of vitamin C increased fish survival by 1.4-fold compared with fish fed Artemia enriched with only EPA/DHA concentrate. The survival of the latter was similar to control fish (Artemia without enrichment). The supplementation of vitamin E did not affect fish survival significantly. Stress tests revealed that the resistance of walleye larvae to salinity changes increased when Artemia enrichment was supplemented with vitamin C. This experimental study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of associated naturally occuring antioxidants in the prevention of chemically induced breast cancer using DMBA in virgin female Wistar rats. Rats were randomly allocated to three groups: control group (CG; n = 20), induction group (IG; n = 100), and prevention group (PG; n = 70). A single dose (65 mg/kg) of DMBA was administered in the IG and PG animals at 50 days of age. PG animals also received a single dose of alpha-tocopherol (200 mg/rat) 1 hour after DMBA administration and an association of selenium (p-XSC, 40 ppm/day/rat) and ascorbic acid (540 mg/day/rat) in drinking water, daily, from carcinogenic induction until necropsy. Macroscopic study and pathology revealed a significantly lower development of neoplasms in the PG animals (p < 0.05); the number of rats with mammary tumors, breast cancer incidence, and the number of malignant breast tumors per rat as well as per tumor-bearing rat were significantly decreased in the PG animals. Other types of primary neoplasms existing in the IG animals totally disappeared in the PG animals. Immunostaining to hormone steroid receptors (ER and PR) and cathepsin D was similar in both groups. Overexpression of p53 and metallothioneine was significantly increased in the PG animals (p < 0.05) and immunostaining to bromodeoxiuridin and Ki-67 was also stronger in the remaining tumors in the PG animals. These data thus add to the accumulating evidence that those micronutrients in combination seem to be effective in reducing the incidence of malignant tumors. The hypothesis that vitamin C interacts with vitamin E in vivo was investigated in juvenile lake sturgeon. Ten-month old lake sturgeon were fed diets supplemented with either 0 or 1250 mg ascorbic acid/kg diet concomitantly with either 0 or 200 mg αtocopherol/kg diet for 7 weeks at 17°C. Dietary vitamin C supplement resulted in significant increases of ascorbate concentrations in the posterior kidney and liver of sturgeon. Dietary vitamin E omission affected liver concentrations of αtocopherol (10.0 ± 4.5 µg/g) in comparison to sturgeon fed a diet supplemented with vitamin E and vitamin C (99.5 ± 22.9 µg/g). Dietary vitamin C supplement decreased liver α-tocopherol concentration in vitamin E-deprived sturgeon. Also, vitamin E supplement lowered posterior kidney and liver ascorbic acid concentrations in vitamin C-deprived sturgeon. Gulonolactone oxidase and dehydroascorbic acid reductase activities were stimulated in groups fed vitamin C. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances concentrations (an indicator of lipid peroxidation) were higher in sturgeon fed either of vitamins as compared to sturgeon deprived of both vitamins.
