This paper introduces a novel and comprehensive model for the analysis of dam deformation trends, integrating the variational mode decomposition (VMD) method, fractal theory, and the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) to re6ne the deep extreme learning machine (DELM) model. This integration allows for a meticulous denoising process through VMD, e7ectively isolating pertinent signal characteristics from noise and measurement interference. Following this, fractal theory is utilized to conduct an in-depth qualitative analysis of the denoised data, capturing intricate patterns within the deformation trends. The model further evolves with the application of WOA to optimize the DELM model, thereby facilitating an integrated approach that merges qualitative insights with quantitative analysis. The efficacy of this advanced model is demonstrated through a case study, highlighting its capability to deliver accurate and reliable predictions that are in harmony with practical engineering scenarios. Accurate fault detection in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines plays a pivotal role in enhancing operational efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring grid reliability. This research aims to develop a cost-effective and high-performance fault detection solution for HVDC systems. The primary objective is to accurately identify and localize faults within the power system. In pursuit of this goal, the paper presents a comparative analysis of current and voltage characteristics between the rectifier and inverter sides of the HVDC transmission system and their associated alternating current (AC) counterparts under various fault conditions. Voltage and current features are extracted and optimized using a metaheuristic approach, specifically Harris Hawk's optimization method. Leveraging machine learning (ML) and artificial neural networks (ANN), this technique demonstrates its effectiveness in generating a fault locator with exceptional accuracy. With a substantial volume of data employed for learning and training, the Harris Hawks optimization method exhibits faster convergence compared to other metaheuristic methods examined in this study. The research findings are applied to simulate diverse fault types and unknown fault locations at multiple system points. Evaluating the fault detection system's effectiveness, quantified through metrics such as specificity, accuracy, F1 score, and sensitivity, yields remarkable results, with percentages of 99.01%, 98.69%, 98.64%, and 98.67%, respectively. Accurately predicting short-term congestions in ship traffic flow is important for water traffic safety and intelligent shipping. We propose a method for predicting the traffic flow of ships by applying the whale optimization algorithm to an extreme learning machine. The method considers external environmental uncertainty and complexity of ships navigating in traffic-intensive waters. First, the parameters of ship traffic flow are divided into multiple modal components using variational mode decomposition and extreme learning machine. The machine and the whale optimization algorithm constitute a hybrid modelling approach for predicting individual modal components and integrating the results of individual components. Considering a map between ship traffic flow parameters and congestion, fuzzy c-means clustering is used to predict the level of ship traffic congestion. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, ship traffic flow data of the Yangtze River estuary were selected for evaluation. Results from the proposed method for predicting ship traffic flow parameters are consistent with measurements. Air strikes are among the main means of attack in modern warfare. To improve air defense capabilities and aid military decision-making, threat assessment models have been introduced. As the parameters of the kernel extreme learning machine (KELM) model need to be set individually, this study proposes a parameter learning strategy based on a multistrategy improved sparrow search algorithm (MISSA). First, a reasonable threat assessment model was established based on the capability and situation factors of air targets. Second, the sparrow search algorithm was improved in terms of population position initialization and position update strategy, incorporating tent chaos reverse learning, nonlinear inertia weights, a global search strategy, and adaptive t-distribution. The effectiveness of the MISSA strategy was verified using nine common benchmark functions. The results show that the proposed MISSA finds an effective balance between global and local searches. Moreover, when the MISSA is applied to solve the tuning problem of KELM, the values of mean absolute percentage error, mean square error, root mean square error, and mean absolute error for MISSA–KELM in the air target threat assessment problem are 2.013 × 10−2, 1.282 × 10−4, 1.132 × 10−2, and 8.316 × 10−3, respectively, all of which are higher than that of the other metaheuristic algorithms (e.g., ACWOA-KELM and HGWO-KELM). Summary: The purpose of this research is to examine the performance assessment and multi‐objective optimization of a multigeneration energy systems that include power generation, cooling, and freshwater. The system under investigation is composed of a fuel cell, a multi‐effect desalination plant, an absorption chiller, a steam generator, and a thermoelectric generator. To do this, we employed thermodynamic modeling of the intended cycle to determine the optimal design points employing a genetic algorithm. Machine learning techniques have been utilized to lower the computing time and cost associated with optimization. The optimization of this cycle revealed that it is possible to increase the exergy and energy effectiveness by up to 72 and 79%, respectively while lowering the total cost rate to $ 9.23 per hour. The New Caledonian crow learning algorithm (NCCLA) is a novel metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the learning behavior of New Caledonian crows learning to make tools to obtain food. However, it suffers from the problems of easily falling into local optima and insufficient convergence accuracy and convergence precision. To further improve the convergence performance of NCCLA, an improved New Caledonian crow learning algorithm (INCCLA) is proposed in this paper. By determining the parent individuals based on the cosine similarity, the juveniles are guided to search toward different ranges to maintain the population diversity; a novel hybrid mechanism of complete and incomplete learning is proposed to balance the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the algorithm; the update strategy of juveniles and parent individuals is improved to enhance the convergence speed and precision of the algorithm. The test results of the CEC2013 and CEC2020 test suites show that, compared with the original NCCLA algorithm and four of the best metaheuristics to date, INCCLA has significant advantages in terms of convergence speed, convergence precision, and stability. Artificial neural networks have achieved a great success in simulating the information processing mechanism and process of neuron supervised learning, such as classification. However, traditional artificial neurons still have many problems such as slow and difficult training. This paper proposes a new dendrite neuron model (DNM), which combines metaheuristic algorithm and dendrite neuron model effectively. Eight learning algorithms including traditional backpropagation, classic evolutionary algorithms such as biogeography-based optimization, particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, population-based incremental learning, competitive swarm optimization, differential evolution, and state-of-the-art jSO algorithm are used for training of dendritic neuron model. The optimal combination of user-defined parameters of model has been systemically investigated, and four different datasets involving classification problem are investigated using proposed DNM. Compared with common machine learning methods such as decision tree, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, and artificial neural networks, dendritic neuron model trained by biogeography-based optimization has significant advantages. Human Learning Optimization (HLO) is an efficient metaheuristic algorithm in which three learning operators, i.e., the random learning operator, the individual learning operator, and the social learning operator, are developed to search for optima by mimicking the learning behaviors of humans. In fact, people not only learn from global optimization but also learn from the best solution of other individuals in the real life, and the operators of Differential Evolution are updated based on the optima of other individuals. Inspired by these facts, this paper proposes two novel differential human learning optimization algorithms (DEHLOs), into which the Differential Evolution strategy is introduced to enhance the optimization ability of the algorithm. And the two optimization algorithms, based on improving the HLO from individual and population, are named DEHLO1 and DEHLO2, respectively. The multidimensional knapsack problems are adopted as benchmark problems to validate the performance of DEHLOs, and the results are compared with the standard HLO and Modified Binary Differential Evolution (MBDE) as well as other state-of-the-art metaheuristics. The experimental results demonstrate that the developed DEHLOs significantly outperform other algorithms and the DEHLO2 achieves the best overall performance on various problems. The challenge of dynamic traffic demand in mobile networks is tackled by moving cells based on unmanned aerial vehicles. Considering the tremendous potential of unmanned aerial vehicles in the future, we propose a new heuristic algorithm for coverage optimization. The proposed algorithm is implemented based on a conditional generative adversarial neural network, with a unique multilayer sum-pooling loss function. To assess the performance of the proposed approach, we compare it with the optimal core-set algorithm and quasi-optimal spiral algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed approach converges to the quasi-optimal solution with a negligible difference from the global optimum while maintaining a quadratic complexity regardless of the number of users. The aim of meta-learning is to train the machine to learn quickly and accurately. Improving the performance of the meta-learning model is important in solving the problem of small samples and in achieving general artificial intelligence. A meta-learning method based on feature embedding that exhibits good performance on the few-shot problem was previously proposed. In this method, the pretrained deep convolution neural network was used as the embedding model of sample features, and the output of one layer was used as the feature representation of samples. The main limitation of the method is the inability to fuse low-level texture features and high-level semantic features of the embedding model and joint optimization of the embedding model and classifier. Therefore, a multilayer adaptive joint training and optimization method of the embedding model was proposed in the current study. The main characteristics of the current method include using multilayer adaptive hierarchical loss to train the embedding model and using the quantum genetic algorithm to jointly optimize the embedding model and classifier. Summary: In‐service Restoration (SR), the healthy section of the feeder can be re‐energized by finding the optimal path for power flow. Through conventional methods which are mainly deterministic in nature, the computational burden is very high. Therefore, researchers have proposed various meta‐heuristic based methods to solve the SR problem. But since, these methods are probability based; one single algorithm cannot guarantee optimal solution for all scenarios. Hence, the authors have proposed a Machine Learning (ML) based framework, which can predict the best SR scheme for a particular fault scenario among the SR solutions obtained through various meta‐heuristic algorithms. The supervised ML model is developed using the fault features as input values and the best performing meta‐heuristic algorithm as the target value. To check the validity of the ML framework, the authors have taken four different meta‐heuristic algorithms, which are, Enhanced Integer Coded Particle Swarm Optimization (EICPSO), Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA), Non‐Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm‐II (NSGA‐II), and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. The ML model can be extended for any number of algorithms. Multi‐class Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm is used as the estimator in the current work to train and test the developed model. The results obtained through SVM are 95.95% accuracy, 94% precision, and 94% f1‐score. The performance of SVM is better when compared with other state‐of‐the‐art ML estimators namely K‐Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Random Forest (RF), and Logistic Regression (LR). The experiment is conducted for IEEE 33 bus and IEEE 69 bus test systems. A total of 320 fault instances are created using Power System Computer‐Aided Design (PSCAD) software. Information regarding the current status of urban green space is crucial for urban land-use planning and management. This study proposes a remote sensing and data-driven solution for urban green space detection at regional scale via employment of state-of-the-art metaheuristic and machine learning approaches. Remotely sensed data obtained from Sentinel 2 satellite in the study area of Da Nang city (Vietnam) are used to construct and verify an intelligent model that hybridizes Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) and support vector machines (SVM). SVM are employed to generalize a decision boundary that separates features characterizing statistical measurements of remote sensing data into two categories of "green space" and "nongreen space". The MPA metaheuristic is used to optimize the SVM training phase by identifying an appropriate set of the SVM's hyperparameters including the penalty coefficient and the kernel function parameter. Experimental results show that the proposed model which processes information provided by all of the Sentinel 2 satellite's spectral bands can deliver a better performance than those obtained from the model based on vegetation indices. With a good classification accuracy rate of roughly 93%, an F1 score = 0.93, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic = 0.98, the newly developed model is a promising tool to assist local authority to obtain up-to-date information on urban green space and develop plans of sustainable urban land use. Summary: This study aims to develop a novel forecasting system that optimizes linear time‐series with nonlinear machine learning models to identify the historical pattern of regional energy consumption. The linear time‐series model, Seasonal AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), was applied to simulate the linear component, while the least squares support vector regression (LSSVR) model was used to capture the nonlinear component of time series energy data and combine the linear and nonlinear components. Several optimization algorithms were investigated using high‐dimension mathematical benchmark functions to compare their outcomes for applying in the proposed forecasting system. Wilcoxon rank‐sum test and convergence graphs for Jellyfish Search (JS) and other parameter‐less algorithms (ie, Teaching‐Learning‐Based Optimization (TLBO) and Symbiotic Organisms Search, SOS algorithms) indicate that the JS optimizer finds the best global solutions in mathematical tests. Then, three real energy time‐series datasets from a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity were used to evaluate various forecasting methods. The analytical results confirm that the proposed system, JS‐LSSVR(SARIMA, LSSVR), can predict multi‐step ahead time series energy consumption with higher accuracy than the linear model (ie, SARIMA), nonlinear model (ie, LSSVR), hybrid model (ie, JS‐LSSVR), hybrid systems (ie, TLBO‐LSSVR(SARIMA, LSSVR) and TLBO‐LSSVR(SARIMA, LSSVR)), and prior studies. Numerical experiments show that the JS‐LSSVR(SARIMA, LSSVR) system can forecast energy consumption 1 week ahead efficiently (from 9.8 to 21.4 seconds on average). Notably, the proposed technique only requires 4 inputs vs 7 to 32 inputs of other models in the literature. Thus, a power company can apply the proposed system to forecast energy consumption to efficiently dispatch regional energy capacity and keep the electricity supply and demand in balance for residential buildings in sustainable cities. A new metaheuristic called estimation of distribution algorithm using correlation between binary elements (EDACE) is proposed. The method searches for optima using a binary string to represent a design solution. A matrix for correlation between binary elements of a design solution is used to represent a binary population. Optimisation search is achieved by iteratively updating such a matrix. The performance assessment is conducted by comparing the new algorithm with existing binary-code metaheuristics including a genetic algorithm, a univariate marginal distribution algorithm, population-based incremental learning, binary particle swarm optimisation, and binary simulated annealing by using the test problems of CEC2015 competition and one real-world application which is an optimal flight control problem. Symbiotic organisms search (SOS) is a new robust and powerful metaheuristic algorithm, which stimulates the symbiotic interaction strategies adopted by organisms to survive and propagate in the ecosystem. In the supervised learning area, it is a challenging task to present a satisfactory and efficient training algorithm for feedforward neural networks (FNNs). In this paper, SOS is employed as a new method for training FNNs. To investigate the performance of the aforementioned method, eight different datasets selected from the UCI machine learning repository are employed for experiment and the results are compared among seven metaheuristic algorithms. The results show that SOS performs better than other algorithms for training FNNs in terms of converging speed. Harmony search (HS) algorithm is an emerging population-based metaheuristic algorithm, which is inspired by the music improvisation process. The HS method has been developed rapidly and applied widely during the past decade. In this paper, an improved global harmony search algorithm, named harmony search based on teaching-learning (HSTL), is presented for high dimension complex optimization problems. InHSTL algorithm, four strategies (harmonymemory consideration, teaching-learning strategy, local pitch adjusting, and random mutation) are employed to maintain the proper balance between convergence and population diversity, and dynamic strategy is adopted to change the parameters. The proposed HSTL algorithm is investigated and compared with three other state-of-the-art HS optimization algorithms. Furthermore, to demonstrate the robustness and convergence, the success rate and convergence analysis is also studied. The experimental results of 31 complex benchmark functions demonstrate that the HSTL method has strong convergence and robustness and has better balance capacity of space exploration and local exploitation on high dimension complex optimization problems.
