Objective: To estimate the effectiveness of several vaccine brands-Pfizer, Astra, and Sinovac-against symptomatic COVID-19 without information on vaccination at the individual level., Methods: We use data of mass vaccination programs-specifically, for sexagenarians and quinquagenarians-in three large municipalities of Mexico (Monterrey, Guadalupe, and San Nicolás) to conduct a two-step time series estimation procedure involving a synthetic control group. The data covers the period between the first week of March 2020 and the first week of October 2021., Results: Vaccine effectiveness is a concave function of time. At the peak, Pfizer reaches 92.6 % effectiveness, Astra 83.6 % and Sinovac 65.6 %. This occurs 9 to 12 weeks after the first shot., Conclusion: The results indicate that the three vaccines protect against symptomatic COVID-19. Nevertheless, they offer different levels of protection. The results also suggest that VE-under a two-shot scheme-reaches its peak 9 to 16 weeks after the first shot. Background: The global inequity in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines underscores the urgent need for innovative and cost-effective vaccine technologies to address access disparities and implement local manufacturing capabilities. This is essential for achieving and sustaining widespread immunity, and for ensuring timely protection of vulnerable populations during future booster campaigns in lower- middle income countries (LMICs)., Methods: To address this need, we conducted a phase II clinical trial to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the locally manufactured AVX/COVID-12 "Patria" (AVX) vaccine as a booster dose. The vaccine was administered either intramuscularly (IM) or intranasally (IN) to participants who had previously completed a vaccination regimen for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) using adenoviral vector, inactivated virus, or mRNA-based vaccines. Participants with initial anti-spike IgG titers below 1,200 U/mL were included, allowing us to observe the booster effect induced by vaccination., Results: Both IM and IN immunization with AVX were found to be safe and well-tolerated. The vaccine induced a significant (>2.5-fold) increase in neutralizing antibodies against the ancestral Wuhan strain and variants of concern (VOCs), including Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron (BA.2 and BA.5). This immune response was further supported by increased cellular production of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), demonstrating a robust and multifaceted immune reaction., Conclusions: The administration of AVX as a booster dose, whether through IM or IN routes, was safe and well-tolerated. The vaccine extended immune responses not only against the ancestral Wuhan-1 strain but also against various VOCs. This research addresses the impact of illicit drug use on labour market outcomes of men in Mexico. We leverage statistical information from three waves of a comparable national survey and make use of the Lewbel's heteroskedasticity-based instrumental variable strategy to deal with the endogeneity of the drug consumption. Our results suggests that drug consumption has fairly negative effects in the Mexican context: it reduces employment, occupational attainment and formality and raises unemployment of local males. Introduction: Prenatal and early-life exposure to air pollution and extreme temperatures are associated with childhood asthma and wheeze. However, potential windows of susceptibility and their sex-specific and interactive effects have not been fully elucidated. We aimed to identify critical windows of susceptibility and evaluate sex-specific effects in these associations, and evaluate exposure interactions., Methods: We analyzed data from 468 mother-child pairs enrolled in the PROGRESS birth cohort in Mexico City. Daily residential levels of PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and temperature were generated from our validated spatiotemporally resolved models from conception to age 4 years. Childhood asthma and wheeze outcomes were collected at 4-6 and 7-8 years. Distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNMs) were used to identify susceptible windows for prenatal weekly-specific and postnatal monthly-specific associations of air pollution and temperature with respiratory outcomes adjusting for covariates. To evaluate sex-specific effects, DLNMs were stratified. Joint effects were assessed using relative excess risk due to interaction and attributable proportion., Results: Mid-gestation was a critical window for both PM 2.5 (weeks 20-28, cumulative OR: 1.18 [95% CI: 1.01, 1.37]; weeks 19-26, cumulative OR: 1.18 [95% CI: 1.02, 1.36]) and NO 2 (weeks 18-25, cumulative OR: 1.16 [95% CI: 1.02, 1.31]) exposure, associated with higher odds of wheeze. Postnatal exposure to PM 2.5 and NO 2 during the first year of life was also linked to higher odds of wheeze. The warmer and colder temperatures showed mixed effects on respiratory outcomes. We observed a synergistic interaction between high PM 2.5 and high temperature exposure during the first year of life, associated with higher odds of current wheeze. Background: As the migratory flow to the USA has intensified in recent months, health problems associated have been identified. The aim of this work was the identification of malaria cases imported into Mexican territory., Methods: Operational definitions of suspected and confirmed cases were used for investigation of malaria cases. Detection of parasitic entities by thick blood smear and molecular biology served as a confirmatory test. With the characteristics of the cases, a heat map was made to determine common clinical pictures. Finally, epidemiological analysis of cases was performed for the construction of timelines of imported malaria and the tracing of migratory routes., Results: Twelve migrants from four countries were treated for presenting clinical symptoms with suspected dengue or malaria. Malaria was confirmed and two Plasmodium species were identified. From the epidemiological dates of arrival in Mexico, onset of symptoms and migratory routes, we speculate that ten cases acquired P. vivax during their crossing through Honduras, El Salvador or Guatemala. Introduction: This study assessed quit attempts among adults who use cigarettes either exclusively or with e-cigarettes in Mexico, where non-daily smoking predominates., Methods: An open cohort of Mexican adults who smoke was surveyed every four months from November 2018 to March 2021. Participants followed to the next survey were analyzed (n = 2220 individuals, 4560 observations). Multinomial logistic models regressed smoking quit attempts reported at the followup survey (ref = no attempt; tried to quit; sustained attempt of ≥30 days) on e-cigarette use frequency (none = ref; 1-2 days/week; ≥3 days/week), adjusting for sociodemographics and smoking-related variables. Additional models subdivided e-cigarette users by intentions to quit smoking in the next six months (i.e., yes/no), use of nicotine (i.e., yes/no), and vaping device used (i.e., open/closed)., Results: At 4-month follow-up, 32.7 % had tried to quit, and 2.9 % had quit for 30 days or more. Compared to those who smoke exclusively, occasional, and frequent e-cigarette users were more likely to try to quit (Adjusted Relative Risk Ratio or ARRR = 1.26 and 1.66, respectively) but no more likely to sustain their quit attempt. Among those who intended to quit smoking, e-cigarette users were no more likely to either try or sustain quit attempts. Furthermore, use of e-cigarettes with nicotine (59.6 %) was unassociated with cessation except that those who frequently used e-cigarettes with nicotine were more likely to try to quit than those who smoke exclusively (ARRR = 1.88). In this study, we report the innovative application of whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology in assessing broad-spectrum neutralisation by three different antivenoms, of venoms from the medically significant scorpion genus Centruroides. Envenomations by as many as 21 species from the Centruroides genus result in up to 300,000 envenomations per year in Mexico, which poses significant and potentially life-threatening pathophysiology. We first evaluated the in vitro manifestation of envenomation against two human voltage-gated sodium (hNa V ) channel subtypes: hNa V 1.4 and hNa V 1.5, which are primarily expressed in skeletal muscles and cardiomyocytes, respectively. The neutralisation of venom activity was then characterised for three different antivenoms using a direct competition model against the more potent target, hNa V 1.4. While broad-spectrum neutralisation was identified, variation in neutralisation arose for Centruroides elegans, C. limpidus, C. noxius and C. suffusus venoms, despite the presence of a number of these venoms within the immunising mixture. This raises questions regarding the truly "broad" neutralisation capacity of the antivenoms. The inflorescences of the Mexican gordolobo are used as a folk medicine to treat various respiratory diseases. Currently, the botanical species that bear the name Mexican gordolobo belong to the genera Gnaphalium and Pseudognaphalium. Despite a long history of traditional use, most Mexican gordolobo species have never been fully chemically characterized, and the range of constituents in the species has not been comprehensively reported. To establish a quality control and chemical characterization method, a total of 49 samples belonging to 18 species of Pseudognaphalium and four species of Gnaphalium were studied. Nine flavones were quantified using a UPLC-PDA method. The method was validated in terms of linearity (R 2 > 0.99), precision (intra- and inter-day: 0.1-3.9%), accuracy (96-103%), detection limit (10 ng/mL), limit of quantification (25 ng/mL) and robustness. 3-Methylquercetin, luteolin, quercetin, 3,5-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone, apigenin and gnaphaliin A were present at relatively high levels in most of the samples analyzed. The samples of P. oxyphyllum and P. liebmannii showed the highest content of the 9 compounds analyzed. Whereas the samples of the 5 species of Gnaphalium showed the lowest levels, including non-detectable, of the 9 compounds quantified. This marks an important difference with Pseudognaphalium species. Furthermore, using UHPLC-ESI-QToF data with targeted and non-targeted approaches, 57 compounds, were identified in Mexican gordolobo samples. Trypanosoma cruzi is the parasite responsible for Chagas disease. The parasite has been classified into six taxonomic assemblages: TcI-TcVI and TcBat (aka Discrete Typing Units or Near-Clades). No studies have focused on describing the genetic diversity of T. cruzi in the northwestern region of Mexico. Within the Baja California peninsula lives Dipetalogaster maxima, the largest vector species for CD. The study aimed to describe the genetic diversity of T. cruzi within D. maxima. A total of three Discrete Typing Units (DTUs) were found (TcI, TcIV, and TcIV-USA). TcI was the predominant DTU found (∼75% of samples), in concordance with studies from the southern USA, one sample was described as TcIV while the other ∼20% pertained to TcIV-USA, which has recently been proposed to have enough genetic divergence from TcIV, to merit its own DTU. Background and Aim: An association between lead (Pb) exposure and antisocial behaviors has been documented, but findings have been inconclusive. We aimed to estimate the association between prenatal, early childhood, and preadolescent/adolescent (periadolescent) Pb exposure and aggression and conduct problems in periadolescent residents of Mexico City., Methods: Using information from the ELEMENT cohort study, we assessed prenatal Pb exposure through maternal patella Pb (MPPb) measurement during the puerperium, early childhood (birth to 5 years of age) exposure through a cumulative blood lead index (CBLI), and periadolescent exposure through a blood Pb (BPb) measurement concurrent with the evaluation of the outcomes. Outcomes were assessed during periadolescence using the parent-reported scales of aggression and conduct problems of the Behavioral Assessment System for Children-2nd version (BASC-2). We modeled the association between Pb exposure at each stage and each outcome (defined as a T-score ≥60 in the corresponding behavioral scale) using logistic regression, adjusting for sex, maternal age at delivery, maternal education, and household socioeconomic status (SES). The differential effect by sex was assessed with an interaction term in the models., Results: 743, 704, and 595 participants were respectively eligible for inclusion in final models of prenatal, early childhood, and periadolescent Pb exposure. Median Pb exposure at each stage was 9.9 µg/g for MPPb (prenatal), 5.19 µg/dl for CBLI (early childhood), and 2.62 µg/dl for concurrent BPb (periadolescence). 12 % of participants met the criterion for aggression, and 15 % for conduct problems. In adjusted models, a one interquartile range increase in MPPb increased the odds of conduct problems (OR:1.31; 95 % CI: 1.01, 1.70) and aggression (OR=1.24; 95 % CI: 0.93, 1.65) during periadolescence. Pb exposure during early childhood or periadolescence was not associated with either outcome. Background: Newborn screening for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PDd) was implemented in Mexico beginning in 2017. In a Mexican population, genotyping analysis of G6PD as a second-tier method identified a previously unreported missense variant, p.(Ser184Cys), which we propose to call "Toluca", and the extremely rare p.(Gln195His) or "Tainan" variant, which was previously described in the Taiwanese population as a Class II allele through in silico evaluations. Here, we sought to perform in vitro biochemical characterizations of the Toluca and Tainan G6PD natural variants and describe their associated phenotypes., Methods: The "Toluca" and "Tainan" variants were identified in three unrelated G6PDd newborn males, two of whom lacked evidence of acute hemolytic anemia (AHA) or neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NHB). We constructed wild-type (WT), Tainan, and Toluca G6PD recombinant enzymes and performed in vitro assessments., Results: Both variants had diminished G6PD expression, decreased affinities for glucose-6-phosphate and NADP + substrates, significant decreases in catalytic efficiency (∼97 % with respect to WT-G6PD), and diminished thermostabilities that were partially rescued by NADP + . In silico protein modeling predicted that the variants would have destabilizing effects on the protein tertiary structure, potentially reducing the enzyme half-lives and/or catalytic efficiencies., Conclusion: Our data suggest that G6PD "Tainan" and "Toluca" are potential Class II natural variants, which agrees with the absence of chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia (CNSHA) in our patients. Existing campaign-based healthcare delivery programs used for immunization often fall short of established health coverage targets due to a lack of accurate estimates for population size and location. A microplan, an integrated set of detailed planning components, can be used to identify this information to support programs such as equitable vaccination efforts. Here, we presents a series of steps necessary to create an artificial intelligence-based framework for automated microplanning, and our pilot implementation of this analysis tool across 29 countries of the Americas. Further, we describe our processes for generating a conceptual framework, creating customized catchment areas, and estimating up-to-date populations to support microplanning for health campaigns. Through our application of the present framework, we found that 68 million individuals across the 29 countries are within 5 km of a health facility. The number of health facilities analyzed ranged from 2 in Peru to 789 in Argentina, while the total population within 5 km ranged from 1,233 in Peru to 15,304,439 in Mexico. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using this methodological framework to support the development of customized microplans for health campaigns using open-source data in multiple countries. Background: Maternal immunization rates and vaccine uptake in Latin America vary from country to country. This variability stems from factors related to pregnant women, vaccine recommendations from healthcare providers and the health system. The aim of this paper is to describe women's knowledge and attitudes to maternal immunziation, and barriers to access and vaccination related decision-making processes in Latin American countries., Methods: We conducted focus group discussions (FGD) with pregnant women in five middle-income countries: Argentina, Brazil, Honduras, Mexico and Peru, between July 2016 and July 2018. The FGDs were conducted by trained qualitative researchers in diverse clinics located in the capital cities of these countries., Results: A total of 162 pregnant women participated in the FGDs. In general, participants were aware of the recommendation to receive vaccines during pregnancy but lacked knowledge regarding the diseases prevented by these vaccines. Pregnant women expressed a desire for clearer and more detailed communication on maternal vaccines by their healthcare professionals instead of relying on other sources of information such as the internet. Overall, participants had positive attitudes towards maternal immunization and were open to receiving vaccines in pregnancy based on general trust they have in recommendations made by their healthcare providers. The main obstacles pregnant women said they encounter were mainly centered around their clinical experience: long waiting times, vaccine shortages, and impolite behavior of healthcare providers or clinical staff., Conclusion: Important advances have been made in Latin America to promote maternal immunization. Results from this study show that an important aspect that remains to be addressed, and is crucial in improving vaccine uptake in pregnancy, is women's clinical experience. We recommend pregnant women to be treated as a priority population for providing immunization and related healthcare education. Background: The Region of the Americas has a long history of implementing maternal and neonatal immunization (MNI) programs. Our study aimed to understand the state of MNI policies, strategies and implementation practices in Latin America (LA)., Methods: Study conducted in 5 middle-income countries: Argentina, Brazil, Honduras, Mexico and Peru. The methods included a desk review, interviews with national stakeholders and health care providers, focus groups with pregnant women and observations in health facilities. Enablers and barriers were identified and categorized as individual, societal or related to the health system., Results: All 5 participating countries had similar MNI policies and high access to antenatal care. Key enablers were the high acceptability of vaccination during pregnancy, high-level of political will and a national legal framework ensuring free access to vaccines. At the health system level, implementation was facilitated by the existence of immunization advisory committees, a pooled vaccine procurement mechanism, complementary vaccine delivery strategies, conditional cash transfer to users and performance incentives to health facilities. The main programmatic barriers were the lack of adequate MNI information; limited coordination between antenatal and immunization services; inadequate supply, resources and infrastructure; high staff turnover; insufficient training for health care providers; and weak monitoring and reporting systems., Conclusion: Middle-income countries in LA have successfully implemented MNI programs and several enablers were identified. Background: Antenatal care providers have a key role in providing appropriate information and immunization recommendations to improve pregnant women's vaccine uptake. The objective of this study is to describe health care providers' perspectives and experience regarding the implementation of maternal immunization programs in Latin America., Methods: We conducted 33 in-depth interviews of health care providers from Argentina, Brazil, Honduras, Mexico, and Peru (6-7 per country). Qualitative data analysis was conducted using a combination of both manual techniques and the computer software program NVivo. We identified and coded main themes related to maternal immunization., Results: The main themes identified in this analysis were practices related to maternal immunization, knowledge and training, resource availability and interactions with pregnant women. Healthcare providers knew that recommendations exists but some did not know their content; they expressed concerns about insufficient training. Providers from all five countries expressed the need for additional human resources and supplies. They also expressed a desire for women to be more proactive and ask more questions during the health visits., Conclusion: This is the first multi-country study assessing the perspectives of health care providers about maternal immunization practices at the facility level in Latin America. Recommendations based on the results from this study include implementing additional trainings around maternal immunization, especially targeting obstetricians and midwives. This paper considers whether the COVID-19 stay-at-home order affected crimes targeting women. To answer this question, we use national municipal-level crime data from Mexico's National Public Security System. The NPSS reports sexual crimes, lapses in alimony, domestic violence, and femicides. Using the NPSS, we track monthly changes in crimes targeting women using an event-study design. Our results show that lapses in alimony, sexual crimes, and domestic violence follow a U-shaped trend. Each crime declined during the stay-at-home order, and then rose back to pre-COVID levels by October. Then, we analyze potential mechanisms for the reduction in crimes against women. This paper examines the evolution of the statures of Spanish male and female migrants who entered Mexico between the mid-nineteenth and the mid-twentieth century. Using the information contained in the National Registry of Foreigners created by the Mexican government, the paper also estimates the evolution of the gap between male and female migrants' heights. The inclusion of women and their heights in the registry allows the estimation of both male and female heights and the analysis of their evolution for a group of comparable individuals. The results show that Spanish migrants to Mexico grew taller between 1840 and 1930, and also reveal their character as a highly qualified group, with heights similar to those of the Latin-American elites and considerably higher than the statures of those who remained in Spain. Congregation of different migratory and resident bird species on aquatic ecosystems during winter migration increases contact rates and enhances influenza A virus (IAV) transmission. However, scarce research has been focused on the resident bird's contribution to the viral ecology at a local scale. The Mexican duck (Anas diazi) is an endemic endangered anatid from Mexico. This resident species shares aquatic habitats with migratory birds in the wetlands of Central Mexico. Therefore, here we describe the phylogenetic analysis of an IAV (A/Mexican duck/EstadodeMexico; Lerma/UIFMVZ377/2016(H5N2)) isolated in this species, during spatiotemporal concurrence with migratory anatids in the winter season. All eight gene sequences were obtained by nextgeneration sequencing. Maximum Likelihood trees were constructed using MEGA-X, with General Time Reversible + Invariant (GTR+I), Subtree Pruning and Regrafting (SPR) heuristic method, and 1000 bootstrap replicates. Similarities with six different IAV subtypes were observed through a BLAST search: H6N5, H7N7, H5N2, H4N6, H9N2, and H11N9, detected in wild ducks during 2015 in the Pacific, Central and Mississippi flyways stop sites across the United States of America and Canada. Objective: To understand the predominant topics of discussion, stance and associated language used on social media platforms relating to maternal vaccines in 15 countries over a six-month period., Background: In 2019, the World Health Organisation prioritised vaccine hesitancy as a top ten global health threat and recognized the role of viral misinformation on social media as propagating vaccine hesitancy. Maternal vaccination offers the potential to improve maternal and child health, and to reduce the risk of severe morbidity and mortality in pregnancy. Understanding the topics of discussion, stance and language used around maternal vaccines on social media can inform public health bodies on how to combat vaccine misinformation and vaccine hesitancy., Methods: Social media data was extracted (Twitter, forums, blogs and comments) for six months from 15 countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Panama, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and United States). We used stance, discourse and topic analysis to provide insight into the most frequent and weighted keywords, hashtags and themes of conversation within and across countries., Results: We exported a total of 19,192 social media posts in 16 languages obtained between 1st November 2018 and 30th April 2019. After screening all posts, 16,000 were included in analyses, while excluding retweets, 2,722 were annotated for sentiment. Main topics of discussion were the safety of the maternal influenza and pertussis vaccines. Discouraging posts were most common in Italy (44.9%), and the USA (30.8%)., Conclusion: The content and stance of maternal vaccination posts from November 2018 to April 2019 differed across countries, however specific topics of discussion were not limited to geographical location. These discussions included the promotion of vaccination, involvement of pregnant women in vaccine research, and the trust and transparency of institutions. Introduction: Low levels of physical activity are associated with several noncommunicable diseases. In Mexico, 39.5% of adolescents do not meet WHO physical activity guidelines. Previous literature suggests an association between perception of safety and physical activity. This paper examines the association between perceived crime and pedestrian safety and physical activity in Mexican adolescents., Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from 4,079 adolescents aged 15-18 years in Mexico. Physical activity was measured with the Youth Physical Activity Questionnaire and was grouped into the following 5 domains: (1) moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, (2) sports activity, (3) leisure time activity, (4) physical education class, and (5) active commuting to school. Perception of safety was measured as pedestrian safety and crime safety, using the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale-Youth. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to examine the construct validity of this scale on the Mexican population. Data were collected in 2017 and analyzed in 2018. Associations between physical activity and perception of safety were examined using linear regression models., Results: Low perception of pedestrian safety was associated with lower moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week (coefficient= -0.12, 95% CI= -0.19, -0.05) and lower sports activity per week (coefficient= -0.13, 95% CI= -0.23, -0.03) in female adolescents. There was no association between perception of safety and physical activity among male adolescents., Conclusions: Pedestrian safety was negatively associated with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and sports participation in female youth. Phthalates are endocrine disrupting compounds commonly found in consumer products, exposure to which may influence reproductive maturation. Effects from exposure in utero on the onset and progression of sexual development are understudied. We examined longitudinal associations between gestational phthalate exposure and sexual maturation at two points in adolescence (8-14, 9-18 years). Gestational exposure was quantified using the geometric mean of 3 trimester-specific urinary phthalate metabolite measurements. Sexual maturation was assessed using Tanner stages and menarche onset for girls and Tanner stages and testicular volume for boys. Generalized estimating equations for correlated ordinal multinomial responses were used to model relationships between phthalates and odds of transitioning to the next Tanner stage, while generalized additive (GA) mixed models were used to assess the odds of menarche. All models were adjusted for child age (centered around the mean), BMI z-score, change in BMI between visits, time (years) between visits (ΔT), and interactions between ΔT and mean-centered child age and the natural log of exposure metabolite concentration. Among girls, a doubling of gestational MBzP concentrations was associated with increased odds of being at a higher Tanner stage for breast development at 8-14 years (OR = 4.62; 95% CI: 1.38, 15.5), but with slower progression of breast development over the follow-up period (OR = 0.65 per year; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.92) after adjustment for child age and BMI z-score. Similar results were found for ∑DEHP levels and breast development. In boys, a doubling of gestational MBP concentrations was associated with lower odds of being at a higher Tanner stage for pubic hair growth at 8-14 years (OR = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.14, 0.95) but with faster progression (OR: 1.28; 95% CI: 0.97, 1.69). Despite decades of vaccination, surveillance, and biosecurity measures, H5N2 low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) virus infections continue in Mexico and neighboring countries. One explanation for tenacity of H5N2 LPAI in Mexico is the antigenic divergence of circulating field viruses compared to licensed vaccines due to antigenic drift. Our phylogenetic analysis indicates that the H5N2 LPAI viruses circulating in Mexico and neighboring countries since 1994 have undergone antigenic drift away from vaccine seed strains. Here we evaluated the efficacy of a new recombinant fowlpox virus vector containing an updated H5 insert (rFPV-H5/2016), more relevant to the current strains circulating in Mexico. We tested the vaccine efficacy against a closely related subcluster 4 Mexican H5N2 LPAI (2010 H5/LP) virus and the historic H5N2 HPAI (1995 H5/HP) virus in White Leghorn chickens. The rFPV-H5/2016 vaccine provided hemagglutinin inhibition (HI) titers pre-challenge against viral antigens from both challenge viruses in almost 100% of the immunized birds, with no differences in number of birds seroconverting or HI titers among all tested doses (1.5, 2.0, and 3.1 log 10 mean tissue culture infectious doses/bird). The vaccine conferred 100% clinical protection and a significant decrease in oral and cloacal virus shedding from 1995 H5/HP virus challenged birds when compared to the sham controls at all tested doses. Virus shedding titers from vaccinated 2010 H5/LP virus challenged birds significantly decreased compared to sham birds especially at earlier time points. In this paper, we study the effect of Progresa, a conditional cash transfer program in Mexico, on the micronutrient and macronutrient consumption levels of program participants. Overall, we find that Progresa has a complicated effect on nutrition outcomes. We find that treatment households increase their vitamin consumption by 15 percent and mineral consumption by 7 percent. Our results indicate that conditional cash transfers may have important positive effects on vitamin A, iron, and possibly calcium, which are under-consumed by a vast majority of the Mexican population. We also find that Progresa increases consumption of processed carbohydrates by 23 percent and saturated fat by about 5 percent. These findings suggest that Progresa has a dual effect on the nutrition outcomes of Progresa eligible households, likely improving macro- and micronutrient consumption levels, but also increasing the consumption of food categories that likely lead to increased prevalence of overweight and obesity., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Several plants that are rich in polyphenolic compounds and exhibit biological properties are grown in the desert region of Mexico under extreme climate conditions. These compounds have been recovered by classic methodologies in these plants using organic solvents. However, little information is available regarding the use of alternative extraction technologies, such as ultrasound. In this paper, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters, such as the liquid:solid ratio, solvent concentration and extraction time, were studied using response surface methodology (RSM) for the extraction of polyphenols from desert plants including Jatrophadioica,Flourensiacernua, Turneradiffusa and Eucalyptuscamaldulensis. Key process variables (i.e., liquid:solid ratio and ethanol concentration) exert the greatest influence on the extraction of all of the phenolic compounds (TPC) in the studied plants. The best conditions for the extraction of TPC involved an extraction time of 40min, an ethanol concentration of 35% and a liquid:solid ratio ranging from 8 to 12mlg(-1) depending on the plant. The highest antioxidant activity was obtained in the E. camaldulensis extracts. The goals of this paper were to determine whether the helminth communities of the blackcheek tonguefish, Symphurus plagiusa, exhibit a spatial structure and, if so, to determine the relative influence of selected environmental and spatial variables. The parasite communities of tonguefish and environmental data (e.g., temperature, salinity, oxygen) were sampled monthly over a network of 37 stations over 1 year (February 2006 to January 2007). Analysis of similarities (ANOSIM), non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and redundancy analysis (RDA) were used. Spatial variables were generated using the analysis of principal coordinates of neighbour matrices (PCNM) method. A total of 1,010 flatfishes and nine helminth taxa were collected. For the environmental variables, hierarchical cluster analyses produced groups of stations associated with the Yucatan dry, rainy and winter seasons. At the infracommunity level, there was no group formation as indicated by ANOSIM and NMDS nor association with environmental or spatial variables. At the component community level, there was significant group formation, and RDA analyses of core, satellite and all species produced significant associations with environmental variables. However, model fit improved substantially (from 17-52% to 49-83% of explained variance) when the spatial variables (variables generated with PCNM method) were added. Thus, the helminth component communities of S. plagiusa were affected by associated environmental variables and unknown ecological processes captured by the spatial variables acting at different spatial scales over time. In contrast, at the infracommunity level there was apparently a very fine spatial grain, where the numerical dominance of core species resulted in biased group formation., (Copyright © 2012 Australian Society for Parasitology Inc. This paper discusses the controversy between top-down, disease-focused, vertical programs, on the one hand, and activities that have been horizontally integrated into health services, on the other, using as a reference the public health initiatives developed in Mexico in the context of a recent comprehensive health care reform. The main message is that it is possible to achieve a synthesis between vertical and horizontal strategies, and also between public health and personal health care programs. Public health and personal care are the two sides of the health system coin, and both are central to a comprehensive concept of health security. Investments in epidemiological surveillance and response clearly contribute to the control of threats facing nation-states, such as pandemics and biological warfare. Background: Different studies regarding VZV genotype distribution worldwide have demonstrated that genetic diversity and epidemiology of infection significantly vary from region to region. In Mexico, VZV genotype distribution is largely unknown mostly due to the lack of a surveillance system that monitors accurately the presence of viral strains circulating in the country., Objective: To identify the main VZV genotypes circulating in the metropolitan area of Mexico City., Study Design: In this study, 127 different VZV isolates, obtained from residents of the Mexico City Metropolitan area from 2005 to 2008, were identified and genotyped. Viral detection and preliminary genotyping was performed by amplification of the VZV ORF-38 and -54 and RFLP analysis using PstI and BglI endonuclease restriction patterns, respectively. Genotype was confirmed by nucleotide sequence variation along the ORF-22., Results: RFLP analysis classified 121 viral strains as European and 6 as mosaic genotype. Genotyping scheme based on the ORF-22 sequence variation identified 120 viral strains belonging to the E genotype, 6 M1 and 1 M4 genotype strains., Conclusions: VZV European genotype appears to predominate in Mexico City. This is the first study addressing VZV genotype distribution in Mexico. The information reported in this paper may be useful for future epidemiological studies conducted in the country and also contributes to understand better the molecular epidemiology of VZV in the Americas.

No research has been done on the body mass index values of the 19th-century Mexican population. This paper introduces a new data source of 19th-century Mexican male inmates in American prisons and finds that the majority of Mexican body mass was in the normal range (18.5-24.9). Few Mexicans were underweight or obese by modern standards. Body mass varied little (0-0.9 units) by occupations possibly because criminals probably came from the lower end of the socioeconomic distribution; however, it did vary with crimes for which inmates were incarcerated.

Background: The discussion of ethical issues in the practice of medical genetics is quite recent in Mexico. However, in the present report we were able to compare the results obtained with the same instrument in two surveys performed with a 12-year interval., Methods: A semistructured questionnaire including 52 questions that explore many different situations in the form of case vignettes related to ethical dilemmas was sent on two occasions to geneticists certified by the Mexican Board of Human Genetics. The first survey was performed in 1993, obtaining a response rate of 72% (64 individuals) and the second in 2005 with a 61% response rate (86 individuals). The areas explored were fairness of access to genetic services, full disclosure of all relevant information, respect for parental choices, protection of patients' privacy, use of prenatal diagnosis only for information about the health of the fetus, voluntary vs. mandatory screening and patients' confidentiality vs. the defense of third party interests., Results: All questions analyzed in the paper were answered by at least 80% of the geneticists surveyed, although in many instances their experience with the situation explored was limited. The complete results of the 2005 survey are given in the text and tables, whereas the 1993 results are used mainly for comparison and given in full only when practical. There was a tendency to answer general questions one way and later change opinions when confronted with specific cases. There was a clear paternalistic attitude and a generalized opinion that one of the goals of medical genetics is to diminish the proportion of individuals with genetic diseases, not for eugenics reasons, but to avoid suffering of the patients and their families., Conclusions: Comparison of both surveys clearly shows a tendency towards increasing respect for privacy and autonomy of the patients.

During the mid-19th century, the United States acquired Texas and large parts of Mexican territory with the vast Mexican-born population. This paper considers the biological standard of living of the part of this population that was incarcerated in American prisons. We use their physical stature as a proxy for their biological welfare. These data confirm earlier results which showed that adult heights tended to stagnate in Mexico during the late-19th century despite considerable social and political turmoil. While there is some evidence of a decline in height among youth, the decline is slight (<1 cm). As in other 19th century samples, farmers were the tallest. Americans were taller than Mexican prisoners by about 2 cm.

Background: To measure HIV-1 RNA concentration requires venous extraction of blood, use of RNAase-free materials, and transport in a cold chain, which makes difficult the management of samples in developing countries. We evaluated the utility of the determination of HIV-1 RNA concentration in blood samples dried on filter paper (DBS) and subjected to different conditions, as contrasted with determination in plasma., Methods: HIV-1 RNA concentration was determined in HIV-infected patients in DBS and in plasma samples. Samples were subjected to the following: DBS were stored at 4, 22, and 37 degrees C for 1, 3, and 7 days; samples from patients from four regions of Mexico were mailed to a reference laboratory; DBS were sent under environmental conditions; and plasma samples were sent frozen. HIV-1 RNA concentrations were determined by NucliSens in DBS and by Amplicor test in plasma., Results: HIV-1 RNA concentration determined in DBS subjected to different temperatures and times had a significant correlation (r=0.99) with those obtained in plasma. When compared with values in plasma, Kappa agreement coefficients of values in DBS stored for 7 days at 4, 22, and 37 degrees C were 0.98, 0.83, and 0.94, respectively. Quantification of HIV-1 RNA in 108 DBS mailed from remote areas with different climates demonstrated significant correlation with those obtained in plasma (r=0.95; p <0.001)., Conclusions: DBS is a simple and reliable method to measure HIV-1 RNA concentration, especially when samples are mailed from remote areas to a reference center. This collection method is an economic and suitable alternative for use in developing countries.

Little is known about the mechanisms through which mother's cognitive ability operates in enhancing her children's health. This paper analyzes how maternal returns to cognitive ability on children's height reflect contemporaneous endowments and childhood background of the mother. Results suggest that maternal returns to cognitive ability on child height are less likely to reflect observed mother's childhood endowments as measured by parental transmission of knowledge or school quality, but are more likely to be associated with learning to be a mother, and with a better capacity to take advantage of household and community available resources.

Background: The aim of this paper is to present the epidemiological characteristics of time, subject and place of lymphomas in children residing in Mexico City, Mexico (MC)., Methods: The type of study was a retrospective hospital survey. All records of children with lymphomas registered between 1982 and 1991 at the main hospitals that treat children with cancer in MC were reviewed. Neoplasms were classified into Hodgkin's disease (HD) and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NonHL). Trend and incidence by sex, age and area of residence in MC were evaluated. Time of diagnosis, as well as parental occupation and educational level, were registered., Results: A trend was only observed for HD in the total group (r:0.62; P = 0.05). In 1991, incidence for HD was 6.12 (rates x 10(6)) and 3.87 for NonHL. The highest average incidence was found in children 5-9 years of age (5.40) for HD, and in the age groups of 1-4 and 5-9 (3.10 and 3.33, respectively), for NonHL. Incidence was higher among boys for both lymphoma categories, but the male-to-female ratio was much higher in HD. Time of diagnosis, incidence in terms of place of residence, and parental educational level and occupation also differed from one lymphoma category to the other., Conclusion: The epidemiology of HD is different from that of NonHL, both showing a pattern similar to that of Latin American children.

Mexicali dust (MD) is a mixture of particles of potassium aluminum silicates (98%) and sodium dioxide (2%) that induces pulmonary damage under experimental conditions, and is capable of inducing in vitro chromosomal alterations in exposed lymphocytes. It has been proposed as an atmospheric contaminant with pathogenic potential. Among the chromosomal alterations observed, numeric alterations were predominant. The present study was designed to evaluate the capacity of MD to induce anaphasic changes in the Balb c 3T3 cell line. Chrysotile asbestos was used as a positive control. MD was found to induce abnormal anaphases, and the percentage of abnormalities increased as the dose increased (27.41% with 20 mg/mL, 29.60% with 40 mg/mL and 37.10% with 80 mg/mL). Multipolar anaphases constituted the most frequent alteration (69.1-78.8%), followed by lagging chromosomes (18.2-29.5%) and anaphasic bridges (1.51-5.9%). The anaphasic alterations induced by MD showed differences in comparison to those observed with asbestos, especially for anaphasic bridges (10.4% vs. 1.51%, p<0.05). The capacity of MD to induce alterations reported in the process of chromosomal disjunction could explain the numeric aberrations reported previously by the authors of this paper. Therefore, these data support that MD could act as a clastogenic agent.

A bibliometric study about the subject content of the articles published in the Mexican scientific journal Archives of Medical Research is reported. The journal, published by the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), is comprised of 100 regular issues and 12 special supplements giving a total amount of 1,424 reports on medical research performed in Mexico during the last 25 years. According to the type of studies published during this period, we found that there is a similar percent of biomedical and clinical reports in the journal (47 and 42%, respectively) and a low proportion of epidemiological and medical educational reports (8 and 3%, respectively). Six thematic areas of research have been permanently published in this journal: investigations on infectious and neurological diseases being the areas mainly represented (34% of the total, corresponding to 17% in each area), followed by studies in reproductive biology (10%) and endocrine (7%), oncological (5%) and cardiovascular (3%) diseases. The tendency of the subjects covered by the journal during this period shows an increment in reports on infectious and parasitic disorders together with an increase in publications related to medicinal plant pharmacology; reproductive biology and endocrine studies show also an increasing tendency. On the other hand, a moderate decrease in studies related to neurological, oncological and cardiovascular diseases is observed. The origin of contributions during the last five years has balanced the proportion of papers published from IMSS scientists, other Mexican biomedical researchers and foreign contributions, thus reflecting favorably the recent changes in the journal's policies. This journal represents a clear example of a scientific publication edited in a developing country, originating as a national publication that evolved progressively into an international biomedical journal.

The focus of health policy has shifted since the late 1970s from emphasizing "equal access" to now considering cost-efficiency in health care as vital. This paper analyzes factors related to the selection of a health provider in a low-income community in West Dallas, Texas. Specifically, it looks at two sets of characteristics (population at risk and health provision system) as they influence the choice of hospital outpatient services as a source of health care. When subjected to multivariate analysis, it was found that health system characteristics, and convenience measures in particular, had the greatest impact on consumers' choice of these services. The notion of "equity" for future health planners concerned with providing services to low-income communities will best be served by the more efficient use of existing hospital clinics rather than by continuing to provide health care systems that serve the poor exclusively.

This paper examines the maternal mortality and the age-specific mortality rates for the under 25 year olds in six border regions on the U.S. side of the U.S.-Mexico border and compares them with those of adjoining regions in Mexico. On the U.S. side of the border, the improvement in the general mortality status of maternal and child health from 1970 to 1980 was equal to or better than that of the nation as a whole. Despite this improvement, in 1980 five of the six border regions showed higher mortality rates due to external causes for the 1-4 age-group. On the Mexican side, maternal and child mortality was lower in the border region than in other parts of Mexico but much higher than in the United States. The 1-4 year olds in Mexico had the highest mortality rates among the three age-groups over 1 year of age.

To understand the external validity of experimental studies, it is important to estimate the extent to which the participants are representative of the general population. This paper describes recruitment methods and considers the representativeness of participants in the San Diego Family Health Project. The study was designed to experimentally evaluate the effectiveness of a family-based behavior change intervention in Anglo and Mexican-American families. Initial contact with the families was made through a household health survey that was sent home with all fifth- and sixth-grade children in 12 participating elementary schools. The survey asked about a variety of demographic characteristics, dietary habits, and physical activity habits. Parents were also asked if they were interested in participating in the project. Respondents were classified by level of participation into one of three groups: not interested, expressed initial interest but did not attend the recruitment meeting, and volunteered to participate. Level of participation was the independent variable in the analyses. In separate analyses for Anglo and Mexican-American responders, our data suggested many similarities and a few differences among participant groups. The differences that were observed suggest that participants may already have healthier diets than nonparticipants, although only one of four dietary variables differed by participation status in each ethnic group. The external validity of these data and general recruitment issues are discussed.
