Stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ 15N) provide information that can be used to calculate, in a quasi-continuous manner, the trophic position (TP) of organisms within particular food webs. The estimation of the TP is fundamental to analyze cases in which some degree of omnivory is involved. Humans, as a species, are trophic omnivores that use plant and animal tissues as food sources, although in an intraspecific context they tend to significantly vary in their respective degree of omnivory. In archaeology, the use of stable isotopes to infer past diets is widespread; however, the formal assessment of TP is rare. In this paper we describe a method to simultaneously calculate and map the TP of past human populations across large spaces, involving wide environmental variation. This method uses, as inputs, δ 15N isoscapes corresponding to (i) primary producer/s, (ii) a taxon of primary consumers with wide spatial distribution and (iii) humans. The first two isoscapes function as the needed baselines for TP calculation. The approach is exemplified with data from central and southern Argentina and Chile (southern South America, 30°–56° S). In multiparty contexts, we know that affective polarization tends to cluster in ideological blocs, although the factors driving this process are still quite unexplored. In this paper, we contribute to filling this gap in the literature by exploring the capacity of ideological identity vis-à-vis issue-based ideology to polarize sentiments towards party voters into two opposing left-right blocs. Specifically, we provide empirical evidence that affective attachments to ideological labels increase the affective distance between ideological blocs to a greater extent than issue extremity and issue consistency. These bipolarizing effects of ideological identity persist even when the identity is inconsistent with issue-based ideology. Additionally, we show that bipolar affective polarization exerts little reverse influence on ideological identity. We support these arguments using an original survey from the TRI-POL project carried out in five multiparty systems: Argentina, Chile, Italy, Portugal and Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities for cross-border eruption management between Chile and Argentina, focussing on an examination of the 2011–2012 eruption of Cordon Caulle in Chile and other crises between 2012 and 2015. We discuss the differences between Chile and Argentina in volcano monitoring, eruption impacts, eruption management and governance during this timeframe. We also discuss the issues in communication of the risks and the potential for future integration at the scientific level. The study is based on 31 interviews with scientists and local officials in 2014–15 (15 in Chile and 16 in Argentina), a questionnaire survey of 128 Argentinian residents in 2015 and a questionnaire survey of 25 disaster managers and residents of Pucón during the 2015 eruption of Villarrica volcano. We conclude that in 2011–12, there were issues with communication across the border, particularly at the political level, and that there are important ways that the scientific institutions in both countries complement each other. • We present new social data concerning the 2011–12 eruption of Puyehue Cordon Caulle. • We show that the eruption was significant in the evolution of institutions and agreements between the countries. • We show that locally, there was dissatisfaction with risk communication in Argentina (which was worse affected). • We argue that the scientific institutions complement each other well but need more resourcing from government. Patagonia features the most extensive glaciers of the Southern Hemisphere, excluding Antarctica, and a vast inventory of glacial landforms, so it is thought to have played a key role in (paleo)glacier studies since the late 19th century. However, no systematic attempts to characterize the specific research trends and the scientific community focused on Patagonian cryosphere have been conducted so far. To fill this gap, we analyzed the metadata associated to 305 articles compiled from the Web of Science database following a bibliometric approach covering the period between 1976 and 2020. Our results point to an irregular but net increase on the number of contributions on Patagonian (paleo)glaciers. Mass balance analyses based on satellite data of present-day glaciers and the reconstruction of past glacier activity by dating glacial landforms formed during the Last Glacial Termination, were the most addressed topics during the analyzed period. Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies are mostly published in generic Earth Sciences publications, followed by Quaternary and glaciological journals. Most of the studies were led by scientists from the United Kingdom, followed by Chile, Argentina and United States. In terms of collaborations, these studies can be divided into two main clusters, one composed by researchers from United States, Chile and Argentina institutions, and another mostly composed by British researchers. So far, the most prolific authors are nearly equally distributed in nationality, yet gender inclusion and international collaborations are still caveats that must be solved. Even though our query on the Web of Science missed highly influential (so-called) grey literature, such as local scientific journals and technical reports, the reviewed scientific literature unambiguously indicates that Patagonia is a privileged location for (paleo)glaciers studies worldwide and that it will continue offering vast opportunities to tackle critical questions related to global cryosphere and past-to-present climate changes. • Patagonia is a privilege site for studying present and past glacier dynamics and the evolution of climate changes at hemispheric and global scale. • Glacier dynamics during the 20th century and and the Last Glacial Termination are the most common topics addressed in past decades in the WOS. • Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies has contributed to the development or improvement of diverse analytical techniques. • United Kingdom, United States, Chile and Argentina produced the largest number of WOS-listed papers on (paleo)glaciers in past decades. • The related scientific community is fairly heterogeneous. Abstract: Cervical vertebrae of elasmosaurids (Sauropterygia, Plesiosauroidea) have proven to be informative even at family level. The present paper uses a previously developed methodology based on bivariate graphic analysis that evaluates the proportion indices of cervical vertebrae in elasmosaurids, which is applied to a well-preserved postcranial specimen of this group recovered from upper Maastrichtian beds of central Chile. The plotting of such indices groups the Chilean material with other specimens from the Late Cretaceous of Argentina and Antarctica, the latter referred to the genus Aristonectes. This result allows us to identify the first relatively complete individual of the genus based on non-cranial characters. The identification of the Chilean specimen as Aristonectes sp. provides important new data on the postcranial skeleton of the genus, that has remained poorly known until now. Abstract: This paper contributes to the literature that analyses the determinants and measurement of Technological Capabilities (TCs) with empirical evidence on Argentina, Brazil and Chile. Based on the World Bank''s Investment Climate database, the study covers firms from the manufacturing sector. We first construct a Capability Score to provide a preliminary measure of Technological Capabilities at the firm level. We then test it econometrically to explore the determinants of TCs and exports and evaluate their reciprocal relationship through a Two Stage Probit. Our results show that exports and TCs significantly and positively influence each other in some of these countries. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The structure and tectonics of the retro-arc area of the Andes between 38°30′ and 40°S remains poorly understood because of the scarcity of previous structural studies. This paper analyzes the styles, distribution and timing of the deformation in the eastern flank of the Andes between these latitudes, with focus in the Tertiary tectonics of the area. This Andean section can be divided into an internal and an external domain based on its distinctive structural evolution. The boundary between them coincides with the Bio Bio and Aluminé valleys, which separate sectors of the fold-and-thrust belt with opposite vergence and different structural styles. Structures developed in the external domain during the Andean cycle are associated with a west-verging fold-and-thrust belt which was controlled geometrically by pre-existing normal faults of the Mesozoic rift phase. We also differentiate three segments along the external domain of the inner retro-arc zone at these latitudes. Each segment is associated with a Tertiary depocenter related to the western border of a structural high (Copahue–Pino Hachado Block and Cordilleras de Catan Lil and Chachil) which constitutes an outstanding feature within the study area. The recognition and interpretation of the main structures and the spatial and temporal distribution of the Tertiary sequences allowed us to establish a tectonic model in which the uplift of this NNW-trending block during upper Miocene times, originated a series of intermontane depocenters well represented between 38 and 40°S. As a result of that, syntectonic and synorogenic deposits accumulated in a compressive regime. These depocenters can be integrated in a narrow deposition zone associated with the western slope of the Copahue–Pino Hachado Block and its southward prolongation in the Cordillera de Catan Lil and Cordillera del Chachil. On the basis of tectonostratigraphic controls we define the last Andean contractional phase of the inner retro-arc area at these latitudes, between 11 and 5.67Ma for the northern segment, between 10 and 6.2Ma for the central segment and between 13 to 8 and 4.3Ma for the southern segment. After this short-lived compressional stage, deformation migrated to the west associated with the onset of the Liquiñe-Ofqui strike-slip fault zone along the intra-arc zone. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Argentina is a special place to study Late Palaeozoic life and environmental change because of the excellent exposures of Late Palaeozoic sedimentary sequences. In particular, Patagonia has an almost continuous Late Palaeozoic succession containing well-preserved faunal assemblages characterized by both strong endemism and distinctive palaeobiogeographic links to Australia and northeast Asia. In this contribution an overview of the current knowledge of the invertebrate faunas of Patagonia and their biostratigraphic and palaeobiogeographic significance are presented, along with comments on the future prospects of research in the light of new findings. The Late Palaeozoic outcrops in central-western Patagonia belong to the Tepuel–Genoa Basin (Chubut province, Argentina), then located in southwestern Gondwana during the Late Palaezoic. In this basin the succession is >6000m thick, and constitutes a continuous and complete succession from the Lower Carboniferous to lower Permian. As such, it has the potential to serve as an important reference section for regional and intercontinental correlations. The marine Late Palaeozoic of Patagonia has yielded abundant and well-preserved representatives of most invertebrate groups: brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, hyolithids, pelmatozoans, ostracods and cnidarians. Recently, studies of the Patagonian faunas have resulted in different opinions on the ages of the faunas. Biostratigraphic correlation is complex due to strong faunal provincialism. For this reason, there are several hypotheses concerning the biostratigraphic zonation in the basin. Since 1920, when studies of Late Palaeozoic strata in Patagonia were first carried out, numerous papers on stratigraphic, palaeogeographic and taxonomic subjects have been published, but our knowledge of Carboniferous–Permian fossils from the Tepuel–Genoa Basin is still incomplete. At present, we are attempting to integrate and calibrate the different faunal associations with a view to achieving a unified biostratigraphic biozonation scheme and hence a much improved understanding of the palaeobiogeographic relationship of Patagonian faunas with those from western Argentina and other continents. Currently, detailed stratigraphic and palaeontological research is being done in the type section of the Tepuel–Genoa Basin. The aim of our studies is to integrate all partial sequences exposed throughout the basin and to propose a biostratigraphic chart based on key invertebrate taxa. Abstract: Between November 2007 and April 2009, the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO, Spanish Institute of Oceanography), together with the Spanish Secretaría General del Mar (SGM, General Secretariat for the Sea), undertook a series of eleven multidisciplinary research cruises to study Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) on the high seas (HS) of the South West Atlantic. Two of these cruises, conducted during the austral late summer and early autumn of 2008 and 2009, focused on the status of the main commercial stocks and the interactions of fishing activities with VMEs. Two main cephalopod species (Illex argentinus and Loligo gahi) are targeted by the Spanish bottom trawl fishery in this area. This paper presents preliminary results of those cruises, describing spatial distribution and abundance of both cephalopod species, geomorphologic, benthic and hydrographical characteristics of the study area, as well as possible interactions between anthropogenic activities and VMEs. Abstract: From the mid eighties on, most of Latin American Countries reformed their energy systems. The impact of these reforms over electricity markets was different in each case. However, in the majority of these cases there was a shift to private participation, instead of State, and a convergence of electricity systems to hydro and thermal technologies. This is the case of Argentina and Chile. In this context, the aim of this paper is to discuss the current situation of renewable energies in Chilean and Argentinean electric markets and the potential to increase their share in total energy supply. To this purpose, we firstly study electricity deregulation process and its current situation. Secondly, we analyze renewable energy share in these electricity systems comparatively to worldwide situation. Finally, we briefly present the policy instruments used in each country. Abstract: This paper evaluates the chronology of the last glacial cycle and deglaciation in the Lago Pueyrredón valley of central Patagonia, 47.5° S, Argentina. The valley was a major outlet of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet and the moraines that record its fluctuations are an important proxy record of climate change in southern South America. Such moraines are well-preserved in the Lago Pueyrredón valley owing in part to the semi-arid environment east of the mountain front. Here, we provide the first direct chronology for the age of the “Rio Blanco” moraine system by utilizing cosmogenic-nuclide surface exposure ages. Boulders on the moraines give 10Be exposure ages that indicate the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) maximum extent occurred by 27–25ka. Subsequent advances occurred at 23–22ka, 20–18ka, and ca. 18–17ka. Initial deglaciation began after ca. 18–17ka and was interrupted as evidenced by the Lago Columna moraines up-valley. Subsequently the outlet glaciers occupying both the Lago Pueyrredón basin (Chilean name: Lago Cochrane) and the Lago Buenos Aires basin (Chilean name: Lago General Carrera) to the north, rapidly retreated more than 80km at around 16.5–15ka. The timing of the LGM maximum extent and the onset of deglaciation occurred broadly synchronously throughout Patagonia. Deglaciation resulted in a series of interconnected glacier-dammed lakes in the region that initially drained toward the Atlantic Ocean and later drained to the Pacific Ocean as a consequence of disintegrating ice in the Andes. Abstract: While the Ensenadan Stage/Age (ca. 2.1 to 0.5Ma) was characterized by certain mammal associations in the Pampean plains, the Andean ranges of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, their piedmont areas and, in some cases, the adjacent lowlands were undergoing a well-defined alternating sequence of glacial and interglacial stages driven by the regional climate of Southernmost South America and Antarctica. This paper reviews the available geographical, geological and chronological evidence of glaciation during the Ensenadan stage/age, with perhaps more than 15 distinct glacial events, including the Great Patagonian Glaciation (GPG) and other cold episodes that took place before and after it. Finally, a tentative correlation of Patagonian glacial episodes and the Pampean biostratigraphic stages, based on radiometric dating and paleomagnetic studies, is herein presented. Abstract: This paper presents an updated, extensive review of glacier fluctuations during the past 1000years in the extratropical Andes of South America between ca. 17° and 55°S. Given the variety of environmental conditions and evidence available for glacier fluctuations across this wide latitudinal range, regional accounts are given for the Desert Andes (∼17°–31°S), the Andes of central Chile and Argentina (31°–36°S), and the North (36°–45°S) and South (45°–55°S) Patagonian Andes. The techniques, dating limitations, and interpretations of the glacier records along this transect are also discussed. Information on glacier fluctuations in the Desert Andes is limited to the 20th century. Documentation on past glacier variations is more abundant in the Central Chilean-Argentinean Andes, but the number of chronologies dealing with glacier fluctuations prior to the 1900s is also limited. Most records indicate that glaciers were generally more extensive prior to the 20th century, with dates of maximum expansion ranging from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The number and extent of glaciers increase significantly in the Patagonian region, where the evidence available for dating glacier variations during the past centuries is more abundant and the dating control for glacier events is generally better than in the northern parts of the study area. For some Patagonian glaciers, maximum Little Ice Age (LIA) or post-LIA advances have been precisely dated by dendro-geomorphological determinations or in situ measurements. However, for most sites, the evidence available is still preliminary and there is considerable variability in the extent and timing of events related to the maximum LIA expansion identified in most areas between the 16th and 19th centuries. Evidence is starting to appear at a growing number of sites for glacier advances during the first half of the past millennium. These events were generally less extensive than the LIA maximum pulses. Despite the occurrence of several post-LIA readvances over the past 100–110years, most areas in the Andes of extratropical South America have experienced a general pattern of glacier recession and significant ice mass losses. The differences in the glacier histories observed at local and regional scales probably reflect the inherent limitations associated with the glacier records and/or the dating techniques used in each case together with the varying dominance of precipitation, temperature and other climatic and non-climatic factors on glacier mass balance and glacier dynamics. These differences indicate that the late Holocene glacier history of southern South America is more complex than commonly assumed. The evidence discussed in this study highlights not only the immense potential for glaciological studies of this region but also a significant need for an increased number of detailed, well-dated records of glacier fluctuations. Abstract: Two competing hypotheses have been suggested to explain thermal sensitivity of lizards to environmental conditions. These are the static and the labile hypotheses. The static hypothesis posits that thermal physiology is evolutionary conservative and consequently relatively insensitive to directional selection. Contrarily, the labile hypothesis states that thermal physiology does respond readily to directional selection in some lizard taxa. In this paper, we tested both hypotheses among species of Liolaemus lizards. The genus Liolaemus is diverse with about 200 species, being broadly distributed from central Perú to Tierra del Fuego at the southern end of South America. Data of field body temperature (T b) from Liolaemus species were collected from the literature. Based on the distributional range of the species we also collected data of mean annual ambient temperatures. We observed that both the traditional analysis and the phylogenetic approach indicate that in the genus Liolaemus T b of species varies in a manner that is consistent with ecological gradient of ambient temperature. The data suggest that the thermal physiology of Liolaemus lizards is evolutionarily flexible, and that this plasticity has been partially responsible for the colonization of a wide array of thermal environments. Abstract: Hydrogen safety issues and especially hydrogen hazard''s address are key points to remove any safety-related barrier in the implementation process of hydrogen energy systems. Demonstrative systems based on hydrogen technologies represent a clear contribution to the task of showing the feasibility of the new technologies and their beneficial capabilities among the public. In this paper, the safety features of the first hydrogen energy demonstrative plant conceived in Latin America are analyzed. The facilities, located in the village of Pico Truncado, Patagonia, Argentina, serve to gain day-to-day experience in the production, storage, distribution, conversion and use of hydrogen in several applications. The plant uses electrolysis to generate pure hydrogen from renewable primary sources, taking advantage of the installed wind power capacity that is continually growing in the region. The installations were designed to accomplish with two primary objectives: total safety assurance and minimization of human errors. Some details of the plant, including a general layout, are presented here, in addition with design criteria, hydrogen hazards, structural precautions, gas monitoring system, existing regulations and safety requirements. Abstract: The fjord landscape of South America, stretching ~1500 km between Golfo Corcovado (~43°S) and Tierra del Fuego (~56°S), is the largest continuous fjord landscape on Earth. This paper presents the results of new structural geological and geomorphological mapping of this landscape using optical satellite images and digital elevation models. First-order geological structures are represented by strike-slip faults forming lineaments up to hundreds of kilometres long. The strike-slip faulting has been active since Late Cretaceous times and is responsible for the presence of a conspicuous structural cleavage visible as lineaments up to ~10 km long. A detailed analysis of these second-order lineaments from digital image data was carried out in three sectors. In Sector 1, located northwest of the North Patagonian Icefield, there are three distinct mean orientations, characterized by a main nearly orogen-parallel orientation (az. ~145°) and two orogen-oblique secondary orientations (az. ~20° and az. ~65°). In Sector 2, located west of the South Patagonian Icefield, there are also three separate mean orientations, with most of the lineaments concentrated between azimuths 0° and 80° (mean at ~36°); and two other orogen-oblique means at azimuth ~122° and ~163°. In Sector 3, around the Cordillera Darwin, there is a single main orogen-parallel mean at ~100–115°. In all three sectors, mapped fjord orientations bear a striking similarity to the structural data, with fjords orientated preferentially in the same direction as structural lineaments. We infer that successive glaciations followed the same ice-discharge routes, widening and deepening pre-existing geological structures at the expense of the surrounding terrain to create the fjord landscape. This study has broader implications for ice sheet reconstructions and landscape evolution beneath ice sheets because we demonstrate that the primary control on fjord development in glaciated areas is geological and not glaciological. Abstract: Aim of the study: This paper aimed to present a quantitative review of information on Mapuche ethnobotany published for Argentina and Chile in the period 1955–2007. Materials and methods: Sixteen ethnobotanical articles were studied quantitatively by utilizing ethnobotanical indices, non-parametric and multivariate tests. Results: A total of 505 medicinal species, 304 native (60%) and 196 exotic (39%) were registered. Ailments were treated with both native and exotic species, although native showed higher values of consensus (between studies) than exotic, and were more frequently used in all cases. The most common ailments were gastro-intestinal pains (26%). Most cures used herbs (56%). Native species were obtained mainly by gathering in forests and ecotones (40%), and exotics by gathering in anthropogenic environments (28%). Our results demonstrate the existence of a common, shared body of knowledge of the medicinal flora at a regional level, integrating ancestral knowledge with foreign knowledge accumulated over time. Finally, reflecting cultural erosion, modern articles cited significantly fewer native plants than older articles; a trend not found with exotic species. Discussion and conclusion: The information offered can be used as a guide for future work on promising species for health care, and as background information for the development of bio-cultural conservation strategies. Riverine and wind-borne materials transferred from Patagonia to the SW Atlantic exhibit a homogeneous rare earth element (REE) signature. They match well with the REE composition of Recent tephra from the Hudson volcano, and hence this implies a dominance of material supplied by this source and other similar Andean volcanoes. Due to the trapping effect of proglacial and reservoir lakes, the larger Patagonian rivers deliver to the ocean a suspended load with a slightly modified Andean signature, that shows a REE composition depleted in heavy REEs. In this paper we redefine Patagonia as a source of sediments, which is in contrast with other sources located in southern South America. Quaternary sediments deposited in the northern and, to a lesser extent, in the southern Scotia Sea, and most of the dust in ice cores of east Antarctica have REE compositions very similar to the loess from Buenos Aires Province and to Patagonian eolian dust. However, we rule out Buenos Aires province as a Holocene major source of sediments. Similarly to Buenos Aires loess (a proximal facies), it is likely that the REE compositions of most sediment cores of the Scotia Sea and Antarctica reflect a distal transport of dust with an admixed composition from two main sources: a major contribution from Patagonia, and a minor proportion from source areas containing sediments with a clear upper crustal signature (e.g., western Argentina) or from Bolivia’s Altiplano. Evidence indicates that only during the Last Glacial Maximum, Patagonian materials were the predominant sediment source to the southern latitudes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper we compare the distributions of ADR returns and the returns of the locally traded shares between Chile and Argentina. This comparison is interesting because both countries are emerging economies with a similar free market orientation and the trading hours in both countries virtually coincide with the trading hours in New York. Argentina and Chile differ, however, in two important aspects: During our sample period: (1) The Argentinean market was completely under a fixed-exchange rate system, while Chile maintained a flexible exchange rate regime; and (2) Argentina did not impose any restrictions on foreign investments, while Chile did. We find that the return distributions of the Chilean ADRs are significantly different from the distributions of the returns on the respective underlying Chilean shares. While the mean returns are the same, the return''s S.D. are significantly different. In contrast, the hypothesis that the distributions of the returns on the Argentinean ADRs and the returns on their respective underlying shares are the same cannot be rejected. We then use a threshold model to estimate the transaction costs of trading the ADRs and the locally traded shares. We find that the transaction costs that must be added to the returns spread before arbitrage is possible were between 100 and 200 basis points for Chilean ADRs. It was between 66 and 165 basis points for the Argentinean ADRs. The daily return spread reversion caused by arbitrage activities was estimated to be approximately 30% for Chilean ADRs and 40% for Argentinean ADRs. Finally, we cannot reject the hypothesis that low liquidity was a major factor in the cost difference between the two countries. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper provides new trace element and Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb-O isotope data on Neoproterozoic to Phanerozoic mid to upper crustal lithologies of the Andean basement in central Chile and western Argentina (33°-35°S; 69°-72°W). It also provides additional data on trench sediments being subducted offshore the northern segment of the Southern Volcanic Zone in Chile. Neoproterozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks from the Guarguaráz complex (Argentina; 33.6°S, 69.5°W), when back corrected to 350 Ma, display a narrow range in 87Sr/86Sr i (0.713–0.718), 143Nd/144Nd i (0.5118–0.5121), εNd i (−8.1 to −1.1), εHf i (−11.4 to +1.2) and δ18O (9–13‰). Nd model ages (T DM = 1.08–1.65 Ga) for the Guarguaráz complex points to a Mesoproterozoic crustal residence age for these rocks. Metasedimentary rocks from the Carboniferous accretionary prism in central Chile (~34°S) overlap with these ranges, but differ by having lower initial 87Sr/86Sr i (0.7052–0.7093) and higher δ18O (14–17‰). The Guarguaráz metamorphic and igneous rocks, when back corrected to 350 Ma, have similar Pb isotope ratios than the Chilean Carboniferous metasedimentary rocks (206Pb/204Pb i = 17.58–18.52 vs. 18.33–18.46; 207Pb/204Pb i = 15.50–15.64 vs. ~15.64; 208Pb/204Pb i = 37.70–38.36 vs. 37.98–38.18). Two Guarguaráz samples are shifted towards less radiogenic Pb isotope ratios, similar to samples representative of the Cuyania basement. This suggests that Chilenia hosts at least two geochemical components: (1) a component with unradiogenic Pb isotopes, similar to the Proterozoic Cuyania basement, and (2) a component with more radiogenic Pb isotopes, similar to Chilean Phanerozoic metasedimentary and igneous rocks. The ranges in Pb isotope ratios for the Chilean Mesozoic (206Pb/204Pb i = 18.44–19.86; 207Pb/204Pb i = 15.59–15.69; 208Pb/204Pb i = 38.30–40.30) and Miocene (206Pb/204Pb i = 18.43–18.57; 207Pb/204Pb i = 15.58–15.60; 208Pb/204Pb i = 38.33–38.46) igneous rocks are similar to those of the accretionary prism. The Mesozoic and Miocene intrusive rocks are characterized by low 87Sr/86Sr i (0.704–0.708 and ~0.704, respectively) and high εNd i (−6.2 to +4.0 and + 3.9 to +5.9, respectively) and εHf i (+7.0 to +12.7 and + 8.5 to +10.8, respectively). They can be divided into two groups. Group (1), consisting exclusively of Mesozoic samples, has negative εNd i , 87Sr/86Sr i > 0.706, elevated e.g., Ba/Th, Nb/Yb, Zr/Y and lower Nb/La, reflecting derivation from enriched (most likely overriding crust or mantle) material. Group (2), consisting of Mesozoic and Miocene rocks, has positive εNd i , εHf i , and lower initial 87Sr/86Sr i than group (1) reflecting depleted mantle melts addition to the crust. Finally, Sr-Nd-O isotopic compositions of the trench sediments at latitude 33°-33.3°S are almost identical to those at latitude 35°-40°S, indicating a relative homogeneous material input along the SVZ, although there are subtle differences in REE and Pb isotopic compositions. Based on Nd–Hf isotopes, trench sediments offshore Chile (εNd> +1; εHf > +2) and offshore Peru (εNd < −2; εHf < +1) have distinct compositions, reflecting the differences in input material. The provenance of sandstones deposited in the late Paleozoic Tepuel-Genoa Basin is analyzed in this paper. Five sections were sampled in Esquel, Sierra de Tepuel, Sierra de Tecka, El Molle, and Río Genoa areas for petrographic and geochemical studies. The sandstones in the Tepuel-Genoa Basin are dominated by feldspathic litharenites and litharenites, showing lithic fragments of volcanic and sedimentary rocks in the Valle Chico Formation and medium-to high-grade metamorphic rock clasts in the rest of the units. Detrital modes of seventy-five sandstones samples from the Valle Chico, Pampa de Tepuel, Mojón de Hierro, and Río Genoa formations were counted and analyzed. Seven modal components have discriminant value for identifying provenance areas (Qm, Qi, Lv, Lmm-h, Lm-Lp, Lm, Qpm). These modal components allow identification of three petrofacies: 1. Quartzose-lithic (Qm 69 Lv 2 Lm 29), 2. Quartzose (Qm 89 Lv 4 Lm 7) and 3. Volcanic-sedimentary (Qm 60 Lv 38 Lm 1). The quartzose-lithic petrofacies is mainly composed of monocrystalline quartz, medium- and high-grade metamorphic clasts and polycrystalline quartz with cataclastic texture, this assemblage is interpreted as being derived from the crystalline rocks that form the Deseado Massif. The quartzose petrofacies is composed of monocrystalline quartz with scarce contributions of metamorphic clasts and traces of volcanic fragments; the provenance area is ascribed to sedimentary terrains, which most likely covered part of the Deseado Massif. The volcanic-sedimentary petrofacies is comprised of volcanic (acidic and intermediate rocks) and sedimentary (sandstone and mudstone) clasts, with discrete amounts of quartz grains with idiomorph shapes and embayments. This assemblage may correspond to material supply from the Devonian-Early Carboniferous accretionary complex developed in Chile or the unroofing of the western volcanic arc located in the central part of Patagonia. The validity of the three defined petrofacies was evaluated using Principal Component Analysis and triangular compositional diagrams; both methods show good separation and lack of overlap between the three petrofacies. Major (Si, Al, Fe, Na, K) and trace-REE elements (Zr, Th, Sc, Hf) were used to improve the petrographic information. The relation SiO 2 against K 2 O/Na 2 O indicates that the Pampa de Tepuel and the Mojón de Hierro formations correspond to a passive margin, while the Valle Chico and Río Genoa formations represent different types of active continental margins. The Th/Sc and Zr/Sc ratios and the Th-Hf-Co distributions indicate that the sandstones of the Tepuel Group were formed from rocks compatibles with the average composition of the upper continental crust. • Detrital modes of the late Paleozoic Tepuel-Genoa Basin in Patagonia (Argentina) are analyzed. • Geochemical data of sandstones of this basin are presented. • Three petrofacies (Quarztoze, Quarztose-lithic, and Volcanic-sedimentary) are defined. • The basement of the Macizo del Deseado and Chilean accretionary complexes are proposed as the main source areas.
