Developing a process-based soil erosion model that comprehensively considers the effects of vegetation is complex but crucial for evaluating sediment reduction during vegetation restoration. Current understanding of the effect of vegetation on sediment reduction along hillslopes across different land uses is limited. In this paper, we developed a dynamic model of hillslope erosion that integrates the effects of vegetation on soil detachability and hydrodynamics (VED) based on the feedback mechanism between soil detachment and sediment transport. The VED was calibrated and validated with runoff plot data for woodland, grassland, and farmland in the Wuding, Yan, Jing and Wei Rivers of the Loess Plateau in China. Unified baseline parameters and decay coefficients of vegetation were obtained. The model validation results indicated that the coefficient of determination, Nash–Sutcliffe simulation efficiency and relative error ranged from 0.59 to 0.99, 0.56 to 0.90, and −45.99 % to 46.36 %, respectively. The decay coefficients for soil detachment capacity (Φ), sediment transport capacity (T c), and the sediment reduction effect of vegetation exhibited the following order: woodland > grassland > farmland. Compared with VED, existing process-based soil erosion models failed to effectively characterize the influence of vegetation on Φ and T c on the Loess Plateau, with differences of several orders of magnitude. The individual contributions of runoff, soil detachability, and hydrodynamics with vegetation impact on sediment yield were quantified by VED. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction decreased gradually with increasing slope length because the soil detachment capacity of bare slopes exceeded that of vegetated slopes, resulting in a faster increase in sediment yield. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction for woodland, grassland, and farmland with 20 %–60 % vegetation covers were 66.75 %–99.95 %, 57.43 %–99.63 %, and 27.91 %–88.63 % in the boundary conditions of this study, respectively. The results reveal the potential for integrating VED into other distributed watershed hydrological and sediment models to assess the effects of vegetation restoration on sediment reduction at a watershed scale. The Wenchuan earthquake greatly reduced the forest water conservation capacity along the banks of Minjiang River. With the intensified soil erosion and the rapid increasing sediment transport, the sediment erosion of hydraulic turbines running on the river has become more and more serious, especially of high head Francis turbines. In this study, the k-ε multiphase flow turbulence model was used to calculate the sediment-water flow of a high head Francis turbine with long and short blades in Minjiang River. The distribution pattern of sediment concentration (sediment volume fraction) on the blade surface shows that the sediment particles mainly gather on the outlet edge at 10% of the blade height on the suction surface of the long blade, while the sediment concentration on the surface of the short blade is small. The erosion of the 0Cr13Ni5Mo runner blade was tested by the flow around erosion method, and the erosion amount on the blade surface in the severe erosion area was obtained. Based on the test data of erosion and the numerical calculation results of sediment flow, a formula to calculate the sediment erosion rate of flow passage components with 0Cr13Ni5Mo material was given for turbines operating in Minjiang River. • SY and Sr of the SL was the largest, but the sediment MWD was the smallest. • Change in the flow discharge did not affect the distribution pattern of sediment particles. • Dynamic coupling of runoff hydraulics and EG morphology drove soil loss. • SDR was the most direct influencing factor on the Sr in EGs. Ephemeral gully (EG) erosion represents the early stage of large-scale gully (locally named as "Benggang") development on Ultisols in the granite hilly area. However, the EG erosion process and the mechanism underlying sediment production have not been fully elucidated. In this study, a series of field scouring experiments were conducted under different flow discharge levels (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 L·min−1), and the primary EGs in three typical soil layers with different weathering degrees (red soil layer (RL), transition layer (TL), and sandy layer (SL)) was dynamically monitored. The results indicated that the ratio of width to depth of the EGs rapidly decreased as the flow discharge increased. At 30 L·min−1, the average sediment yield and transport rate (Sr) of the SL were 4.85 and 5.39 times, greater than those of the RL, respectively. The sediment particles were concentrated within the 1–2 mm particle size range, accounting for over 35 %. In addition, the mean weight diameter of the sediment particles in the RL was the largest. The sediment distribution characteristics did not respond to flow changes but were affected by EG morphological changes. With increasing flow discharge, the flow shear stress and stream power increased. Further analysis revealed that the coupling effect of flow hydraulic characteristics and EG morphological evolution drove the EG erosion sediment production process, and the Sr of the SL was highly sensitive to flow discharge changes. The soil disintegration rate was an internal factor that directly affected soil loss in the EGs, with a path coefficient of 0.71. The bulk density, organic matter content, and sand content were all indirect influencing factors. The RL exhibited greater anti-erodibility than the other layers and could serve as an effective protective layer for granite hilly areas. Water erosion, a notorious major threat to food security and ecosystem sustainability, is strongly conditioned by spatial and temporal scale effects. This paper systematically reviews the scale issues in runoff and sediment delivery (SIRSD) as a research field by integrating the traditional review approach and bibliometric analysis. This review summarises SIRSD's roots and the scale effect on runoff and sediment delivery. Then, we provide quantitative insights into the SIRSD domain's development history, thematic structure, geographic distribution, international cooperation, and methodologies. Findings show that: i) SIRSD arises from the gap between the non-linearity of runoff and sediment delivery across scales and our ability to measure it. Point-based and short-term measurements cannot capture the non-linearities from the spatio-temporal heterogeneities and cross-scale interactions of factors or processes. ii) Previous literature provides evidence that the spatial scaling of specific runoff (r), soil erosion (SE), sediment yield (SSY), or sediment delivery ratio (SDR) with drainage area (A) or slope length (L) exhibits contrasting patterns due to distinct mechanisms. Infiltration-excess and saturation-excess processes account for inverse and positive r - A relations, respectively. Interrill-erosion and rill-erosion cause inverse and positive SE-L relations. Hillslope-erosion and channel/bank-erosion explain inverse and positive SSY-A relations. Downstream increasing deposition and additional sediment inputs drive inverse and positive SDR-A relations. These scaling relationships can be nonlinear or complex due to spatial heterogeneities in land use, vegetation, topography, climate, lithology, and soil characteristics. Hence, applying an empirical scaling equation developed from the region with distinct environmental contexts is not recommended. Furthermore, the existing scaling patterns or equations may require updating given global climate and land use change. iii) SIRSD is a complex and multidisciplinary issue investigated by scientists from 93 countries since 1928. International research has substantially facilitated the understanding of SIRSD; still, more collaboration should focus on less-developed countries with high soil and water loss risks and urgent conservation needs, such as those in Africa and South America under cropland expansion. iv) Scale mismatch and scale break have discredited large-scale erosion and sediment assessments. Incorporating gully and bank erosion into modelling, extending the scale range of the L factor, and expanding the sediment scaling scope from watershed to slope may make a difference. Therefore, more research with nested design incorporating multiple scales is necessary for cross-scale analysis and scalable modelling. Submarine canyons serve as important sediment transport conduits from littoral zones to the deep sea, with strong impacts on the sedimentation patterns in marginal areas of the ocean. Moreover, such canyons can be major geohazards for submarine infrastructure, warranting a good understanding of their past and current behavior. Here, we present a study of the geological history and the recent activity of the Nahariya submarine canyon, the longest of a system of ∼15 small blind canyons located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, offshore Israel. Two piston cores retrieved from the middle and outlet of the canyon, at 650 m and 915 m water depth, respectively, were the focus of a multi-proxy study aiming to characterize sediment transport and deposition along the canyon during the Last Glacial and up to the present. Both cores reveal a sequence of homogenous sediment of late last glacial age, which are capped by an unconformity overlying by fine laminated sediment dated to the last ∼200 years. Thus, the deglacial and most of the Holocene intervals are absent from the record. Evidence for down canyon sediment transport are abundant and include a 70 cm interval of mud clasts with disordered glacial ages that appears immediately below the hiatus, as well as broken calcareous shells of dead benthic foraminiferal species of shallow marine habitats, which are abundant throughout both cores. Similarly, shelf-derived living benthic foraminiferal species were found in the core-tops, indicating that active sediment transport persists along this canyon today. We conclude that the history of Nahariya submarine canyon includes a period of sediment accumulation that lasted until the last deglaciation. Thereafter, the canyon was dominated by an erosive regime that persisted throughout the Holocene. Sediment accumulation resumed ∼200 years ago. We suggest that the recent resumption of sediment-accumulation is a result of anthropogenic amplification of on-land soil erosion accompanied by a wet period that persisted in the region and enhanced land to sea sediment transport. • The geological history of a blind submarine canyon of E. • Contour currents with different physical natures observed over a drift-moat system • High SSC on the drift due to long-range sediment transport by contour currents • High SSC in the moat due to moat wall erosion by tidal-induced secondary flows • Formation of drifts forced by upslope sediment transport of tidal currents Contourite drifts are ubiquitous sedimentary features in the world′s oceans, and their formation are usually ascribed to sedimentation from contour currents. However, in-situ observations of contour currents and their associated sedimentary processes were inadequate. Here, we present mooring observation results from a drift-moat contourite system in the South China Sea to gain insight into its sediment dynamics and formation mechanism. We found that quasi-persistent contour currents develop in the moat, on and below the drift, yet subject to diverse physical oceanographic processes. High suspended sediment concentrations observed on the drift mainly occur in winter, induced by high levels of sediments transported by contour currents from Taiwan. In the moat, however, high suspended sediment concentrations are mostly caused by erosion of the moat wall during periods of strong tidal currents and low shear variance. Such results underscore the complexity of current patterns and sedimentary processes across various topographic units in the drift-moat contourite system. A novel formation mechanism of the contourite drift is thereby proposed, wherein sediment transport by contour currents brings materials for constructing the drift, while its formation is driven by near-critical reflection and upslope transport of sediments by tidal currents. Estuarine deltas play a critical role in the interaction between the ocean and land and serve as the primary location for the deposition of terrestrial organic carbon and pollutants. However, many deltas are increasingly at risk of erosion due to natural processes and human activities. In particular, abandoned estuarine deltas are extremely prone to erosion in the absence of sediment replenishment. The erosion of sediment in these deltas is crucial in comprehending the evolution of delta erosion as it directly impacts coastal geomorphology, ecological environments, geochemical cycling, and carbon sequestration dynamics. Therefore, determining accurately the erosion characteristics of estuarine deltaic sediments is essential for assessing and managing these evolving coastal systems. Therefore, this study conducted erosion experiments on undisturbed sediment samples collected from the subaqueous delta of the abandoned Yellow River Estuary (Old Qingshuigou Estuary) utilizing the UMCES-Gust Erosion Microcosm System. The aim was to reveal the spatial distribution characteristics of sediment erodibility and explore the erosion process, characteristics, and influencing factors of the surface sediments in the area. Erosion characteristics exhibited a spatial distribution pattern of increased erodibility in nearshore sediment and reduced erodibility in offshore sediments. The critical erosion shear stress of surface sediments ranged from 0.2 to 0.68 N/m2, while the erosion rate increased linearly with an increase in erosion shear stress and reached a maximum value of 2.119 g/m2 s, suggesting that nearshore sediments exhibited strong erodibility. Furthermore, the erosion characteristics exhibited a strong correlation with the type of sediment. Silt exhibited surface erosion and Type I erosion (depth-limited erosion), whereas silty sand primarily underwent volume erosion and Type II erosion (steady-state erosion). Particle size characteristics played a crucial role in influencing erosion. Additionally, our results revealed that the effective particle size of sediment aggregates and the scale effect of turbulence were also important factors that affected sediment erosion characteristics. • Mass movement is an important erosion mode and sediment source in gully network. • Mass movement increased sediment concentration and led to peak sediment concentration. • Mass movement was prone to be triggered by rainfall with a medium-duration and moderate-intensity. • Rainfall amount and slope gradiet determined the trigger and total volume of mass movement. Mass movement erosion on the gully sidewalls is recognized as an important erosion mode and sediment source in hilly and gully watersheds. However, the trigger of mass movement erosion and transport of gravity-detached material remain poorly understood. A series of rainfall simulation experiments were conducted on six loess gully sidewall models, with a height (1 m), three rainfall (60 mm, 48 mm and 24 mm) and two slope gradients (70° and 80°), to quantitatively explore the sensitivity factor and transport mechanisms of mass movement. Results revealed that the accumulation volume and initiation of the mass failure were significantly influenced by rainfall amount. The accumulative volume of failure events was observed to increase in a linear pattern with increasing rainfall amount. The minimum cumulative rainfalls for the initiation of mass failure on the loess gully sidewalls were approximately 43.6, 28.2 and 65.6 mm for short-duration and high-intensity, medium-duration and moderate-intensity and short-duration and moderate-intensity rainfalls, respectively. This implied that the initiation of mass failure was more prone to rainfall events with a medium-duration and moderate-intensity than those with a high intensity and short duration. Rainfall amount and initial slope gradient were the most sensitive elements driving the number and volume of the mass movement erosion. Mass movement erosion raised sediment concentration, but the eroded material was unable to be transported by runoff in a timely manner. Average sediment concentrations at the model outlet increased by 1.9–11.9 times following the occurrence of mass failures compared to those before. A low instantaneous sediment delivery ratio of 0.032 for the mass movement erosion. The experimental findings help comprehend the influence of mass movement erosion on sediment supply on the gully sidewall in the hilly and gully network, i.e. the Loess Plateau. Meretrix meretrix (M. meretrix) are commonly found on tidal flats along the global coastlines. They are believed to potentially affect the sedimentary processes and thus morphological dynamics on the tidal flat. Their effects on sediment erosion and deposition, however, are not well quantitatively understood. To fill this gap, we conducted an integrated synchronous field investigation of hydrodynamic, sediment properties, and macrobenthos at two nearby tidal flats, one with abundant M. meretrix and the other without. In addition, seasonal comparison between summer and winter for the M. meretrix abundant site, where there was much less M. meretrix in winter than in summer, was conducted to further examine the influence of M. meretrix on critical value for the initiation of sediment entrainment. The results show that the critical shear stress for erosion (τ e) in the M. meretrix abundant site was lower than the bare tidal flat by ~23%. Differently, for the critical shear stress for deposition (τ d), the value at the M. meretrix abundant site was greater than that at the bare tidal flat by ~30%. Overall, we concluded that the existence of M. meretrix tends to enhance both the erodibility of the sea bed and the deposition of suspended sediment in the water column. • Combined numerical model and GOCI to improve the ability of sediment flux (SF) estimation. • Multi-timescale SFs at typical cross-sections in YRE are estimated in 2013 and 2015. • Locally morphological changes are further estimated, showing erosions in 2013 and 2015. Sediment flux (SF) in the estuary is vital to the coastal and estuarine environment, especially the morphodynamical and ecological processes. However, its quantitative estimation with high accuracy is difficult because it is controlled by complex mechanisms and multiple processes. This study corrects the seasonal variations of the simulated suspended sediment concentration (SSC) by using GOCI-derived surface SSC and calculates the variations of SFs at the main cross-sections in and out of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). The results show that in 2013, 159 Mt and 143 Mt of sediments passed through Xuliujing hydrological station in YRE and estuarine mouth section, respectively. In the inner estuary, the significant seasonal variations of sediment transport are noted that the most seaward transport happens in summer (43.8%) and the least occurs in winter (7.3%). In the outer estuary, the southward transport towards Hangzhou Bay is the most critical pathway, accounting for 109.0% of total transport at mouth section, and is prevalent in autumn and winter. With considerations of sand mining and land reclamation, obviously erosions appear in the whole estuary during both 2013 and 2015. With stronger wind conditions in 2013, severer erosion (161 Mt) happens in outer estuary than that in 2015 (86 Mt). By combining the GOCI-derived surface SSC and the numerical model results, this study can better represent high-frequency hydro- and sediment-dynamical processes to calculate the annual, seasonal, and vertical SFs with improved accuracy. In the Geum River, a representative altered estuary, in-situ mooring and erosion experiments were conducted to reveal the effects of human-controlled discharge on benthic sediment disturbances. The strong discharge through the estuarine dam increased the current velocities within the benthic boundary layer (BBL) up to 79% and 153% during spring and neap tides, respectively. During the discharge period, the suspended sediment concentration in BBL was five times higher than that during the non-discharge period. During the flood phase, a critical shear stress for erosion (τ ce) was in the range of 0.1278 to 0.1391 Pa. Immediately after the ebb phase with strong discharge, τ ce increased to 0.1848 Pa, and the erosion rate (E) decreased from 33.73 to 14.81 mg m−2 s−1. The repetition of human-controlled discharge removed the erodible sediments within BBL, exposing the underlying consolidated sediment bed with low E and high τ ce. The results suggest that an altered estuary is vulnerable to benthic sediment erosion under combined natural and anthropogenic forcings. Abstract In-stream hydrokinetic energy conversion devices can be deployed in large scale rivers to produce energy with minimal infrastructure costs. They are however shown to actively interact with the channel bathymetry and sediment transport generating a scour and deposition pattern similar to bridge pier. Symmetric, streamwise, aligned turbine installations have shown to introduce only local effects, yet complex configurations may trigger non-local morphodynamic instabilities. Experimental investigations, based on continuous spatio-temporal measurements of bed topography, explore a number of inflow conditions and siting strategies for axial-flow hydrokinetic turbine models. Results show that asymmetric turbine installations in a portion of the channel cross section may introduce weak non-local deformation of the mean bed topography and alter bedform migration velocities. Geomorphic effects become stronger with increasing shear stress and with rotors deployed up to half of the channel width, resulting in mean flow distortion within the channel cross section and inducing an alternating scour-deposition pattern resembling the signature of steady, forced fluvial bars. Non-local effects can be mitigated, narrowing the turbine array, or amplified, distributing turbines in a vane-like installation, leading to different estimates of energy production averaged at the power plant scale. A discussion on the key quantities governing geomorphic effects and the potential benefits of asymmetric turbine deployments is provided as a preliminary guideline towards the expansion of Marine Hydrokinetic energy in rivers. Abstract The lower Amazon basin contains vast floodplains that exchange sediment with the main river. The exchange of sediment between the floodplain and the channel follows a seasonal cycle that is anticorrelated with the hydrological cycle. At low water stages, sediment that has been stored in the floodplain for potentially several thousands of years is eroded and transferred from the floodplain to the mainstem. During high water stages, most sediment transported in the main channel stems directly from the eroding source with little intermittent storage. We apply the meteoric cosmogenic 10Be to stable 9Be ratio (10Be/9Be) as a denudation and weathering proxy to investigate this seasonality in sediment transport. Single meteoric 10Be concentrations ([10Be]) have previously been shown to record floodplain storage; whereas fractions of mobilized 9Be, a trace metal released during weathering, provide degrees of weathering. The resulting 10Be/9Be ratio provides denudation rates of the sediment sources. We compare 10Be/9Be measured on suspended sediment from river depth profiles at two sites (Óbidos/Macapa) and during two hydrological seasons (high/low water stage in 2013). We show that careful construction of river depth profiles in combination with Rouse modeling is necessary to exclude the grain size dependence that together with hydrodynamic sorting introduces a bias into single [10Be] and [9Be]. In contrast, the 10Be/9Be is largely uniform across grain sizes and is thus unaffected by sorting. Our 10Be/9Be ratios, the denudation rates derived from them, and mobilized 9Be fractions do not show variations outside their uncertainties across seasons or sites. Thus, 10Be/9Be show that upstream sediment sources were well mixed by multiple cycles of storage and remobilization in the floodplain. In this paper, we examine the effect of vegetation on soil erosion, runoff generation and sediment transport on saline rangeland hillslopes. Rainfall simulations were conducted at a fixed 114 mm/h intensity on 6 m × 2 m erosion plots with varying degrees of vegetation. Plots were grouped into three categories (L, M and H) based on their canopy cover (L: <5%, M: 5–19%, H: >19%) and selected to limit variations in slope across canopy cover groups. Runoff and sediment samples were combined with three dimensional (3D) reconstruction data used to monitor soil surface microtopographic changes. Runoff initiation was significantly delayed on the L plots but cumulative runoff after 20 min of rainfall simulation indicated a positive effect of vegetation on infiltration processes. Cumulative sediment after 20 min of rainfall was similar across vegetation cover categories. The 3D data suggest that vegetation reduced net sediment delivery from the plots by primarily increasing opportunities for deposition while marginally affecting gross soil erosion. Plots with H vegetation cover experienced lower 3D-estimated erosion volumes but average erosion depth on L plots was lower than that on plots with M and H vegetation covers. Lower runoff volumes on M and H plots may have been compensated by greater runoff erosivity on these plots as runoff was concentrated in a narrower inter-patch space compared to L plots. Subaqueous slopes of many actively prograding deltas are heavily modified by widespread submarine sediment failures, forming highly complex geomorphic features that undergo continuous evolution even over short time scales. However, the effects of wave-seabed interactions (especially liquefaction) on the evolution of seabed sediment failures are rarely studied. Here, we use side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profilers, multibeam bathymetry, and in situ and laboratory geotechnical tests to map the bottom morphology and sediment structure of the Yellow River subaqueous delta. Our results indicate that: 1) The morphology along the Yellow River subaqueous delta is highly complex and can be categorized as a moderately disturbed area and heavily disturbed area; 2) Heavily disturbed area shows notable lines of evidences of liquefication-related sediment failure and four separate morphological zones (Zones 1–4). Zone 1 consists of differently sized sediment highs, which considered to be scarp or monadnock features. Zone 2 undulates with widely distributed tabular sediment blocks, gullies, and small-scale seafloor irregularities. Zone 3 is characterized by irregular, elongate sediment ridges. Finally, Zone 4 is characterized by relatively flat terrain with some localized highs; 3) Sub-bottom profiles used to visualize failure features in Zone 1 show acoustically continuous high-amplitude parallel or subparallel reflection, and the geomorphic features in this area are mainly caused by erosion. In comparison, Zones 2, 3 and 4 lack internal structures and display chaotic/disturbed signatures in corresponding sub-bottom data, which might be an indication of liquefaction; and 4) A combination of preconditioning and triggering factors lead to sediment failures and the complex morphological features in this area; however, silt liquefaction under storm conditions is the most important controlling factor. Based on this evidence, we propose formation mechanism for the liquefaction-related sediment failure features in this area. Sediment liquefaction forms an initial depression and gully when fine particles are resuspended along the arc-shaped liquefaction boundary as sediment vents and re-solidification of the liquefied sediment leads to a stiffer bed. Gullies are then widened and deepened by the predominant currents, and the disturbed depressions develop into elongated highs because of the denser structure and higher strength following liquefaction. While disturbed by engineering activities, the sediment highs become fragmented due to intense localized erosion, having the potential for downslope transport and the formation of sediment ridges. Sediment transport patterns (suspension, saltation and rolling) not only depend on flow hydrodynamic characteristics, but also on sediment properties, both of which are largely influenced by soil structural stability. However, how sediment sizes and transport patterns response to original soils over a wide range of structural stability remains unclear. Herein, field plot rainfall simulation experiments on five soils along an increased gradient of structural stability were conducted at two rainfall intensities of 45 and 90 mm h−1 to investigate effective sediment size characteristics and associated transport patterns in sheet erosion. Differing from runoff and sediment yield, sediment sizes were most influenced by soil structural stability (F = 386.9) rather than rainfall intensity (F = 246.7, p < 0.001). Mean weight diameter of sediment (0.16–0.84 mm) and the proportion of coarse particles (>0.25 mm) exhibited a unimodal variation with increased soil structural stability. The effective sediment size distribution shifted from unimodal with the peak at < 0.10 mm for low and high stable soils to bimodal with two peaks at < 0.10 mm and 0.5–1 mm for medium stable soils. Correspondingly, suspension-saltation (>74 %) dominated sediment transport for low and high stable soils, which was determined by fine sized fragments from aggregate breakdown and small flow transport capacity, respectively; while both suspension-saltation (<0.10 mm) and rolling (>0.25 mm) jointly contributed to sediment transport for medium stable soils, which was controlled by the interaction between fragment size and flow transport capacity. Moreover, the positive effect of rainfall intensity on sediment sizes was more remarkable for the medium than for the low and high stable soils. A conceptual model of sediment transport mechanisms in response to soil structural stability is firstly proposed, which merits consideration in the future development of erosion modeling and soil conservation techniques. Velocity-skewed oscillatory sheet flow transport is studied by an approximate model for instantaneous sediment transport resulting from exponential profiles of sediment concentration and velocity over a mobile bed. The phase lag effect, and asymmetry in wave friction factor, oscillatory flow orbital amplitude, roughness height, bed shear stress and wave boundary layer thickness are modelled so that the net boundary layer stream of pure velocity-skewed oscillatory flow can be obtained. The proposed model is found consistent with the previous classical formulas, and qualitatively refines a series of exponents of velocity power function for the approximation of instantaneous sediment transport rate under different flow conditions. The sediment fluxes can be well predicted with accuracy as that of a two-phase numerical model. The net boundary layer stream and sediment transport rates are also well predicted, especially the negative net stream and rates with large phase residual. The phase residual is shown a useful but insufficient factor in the net sediment transport in pure velocity-skewed flows. In addition, the net boundary layer stream resulting from velocity-skewed wave boundary layer development difference between onshore and offshore flow durations is an essential factor as well. Soil carbon losses from sheet and interrill erosion areas have an impact on the global carbon cycle. Sediment discharged in many experiments where artificial rainfall has been applied to sloping soil surfaces show greater proportions of carbon in the sediment than found in the cohesive soil source. In many cases, conclusions drawn from these experiments fail to recognise that the enrichment of carbon in the sediment discharge is a result of unsteady conditions that occur before the steady state develops. It is known that particles of sand of different sizes move at different rates when raindrop induced salation occurs with the result that initially the particle size distribution is finer than the source but tends towards that of the source as time progresses. The presence of carbon in aggregates influences the density of aggregates. Here a qualitative model of sediment transport of sand and coal particles by raindrop induced saltation is used to demonstrate time varying enrichment of coal resulting from the effect of carbon on particle settling velocity. The model also demonstrates how the layer of loose particles that develops on top of the cohesive soil surface influences the relative amounts of carbon and sand in the sediment discharges. The steady state is not achieved until the slowest moving particle detached at the farthest distance from the downslope boundary is discharged. In this study, the temporal evolution of fine sediment deposits on a gravel bar is analysed during a two-year period. The time-series of fine deposit surface area is obtained using the methodology proposed in Part 1 of this work. By combining the hydro-meteorological data, the main evolutions of the fine deposits observed on the bar surface are found to be triggered by events such as natural floods, dam flushes, and strong wind valley breezes, and are quantified for each of these events. A simple processed-based flow model is proposed to investigate the sediment dynamics during the flood events, which balances the erosional/depositional processes of fine sediments. Variability in the fine deposit evolution after floods is mainly due to the different flow and sediment concentration conditions. For small events for which the gravel bar is not totally submerged, a slight erosion generally occurs. For larger events for which the gravel bar is totally submerged, a large net deposition is often observed. The fine deposit surface area time-series also shows sharp decreases of the surface deposit coverage after some strong valley breeze events, with an evolution of the same order of magnitude than floods. The application of a wind transport model shows that strong wind valley breezes can transport fine particles from the bar surface to the river channel, thus leading to a loss of fine deposits on the bar surface. Also, the deposit initial moisture is a crucial element having impact on the fine sediment transport on the bar surface. Dry deposits are much more likely to be transported than wet deposits. Soil erosion and sedimentation are major factors in landscape evolution and river morphology. The erosion resistance of sediments plays an important role in landscape evolution processes because it determines the threshold of an acting force at the initiative sediment motion, and the amount of sediment transports. This study examined the sediment properties and their correlations to the erosion resistance of mudstone deposits and laterites, which are two representative natural cohesive soils in hill and terrace topography in Taiwan. Soil physical properties and pore water chemical properties, and the erosion resistance were investigated and determined using laboratory tests and hydraulic flume experiments, respectively. Investigations of sediment properties showed that the mudstone deposits and laterites had significant differences in median particle size, soil texture, level of plasticity, internal structure, and pH value and electrical conductivity of their aqueous slurry. Results from the hydraulic flume experiments showed that the laterites had stronger erosion resistance, indicating by larger values of critical shear stress and the Shields' parameter, than the mudstone deposits. Through the stepwise multiple regression analysis, a quantitative equation was proposed to estimate the Shields' parameter using fine sediment properties including water content, clay content, and the plasticity index expressed in decimal fractions, of the two soils. Despite more experiments of the two natural soils with different ranges of the sediment properties are needed to validate the empirical equation for predicting the Shields' parameter, the proposed methodology provides an essential reference in which erosion resistance is an important parameter. A simulation based on a hydro-sedimentary model was conducted for the period between summer 2010 and spring 2012 in the Gulf of Lion (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) to understand the spatial and temporal variability of sediment transport, erosion and deposition on the continental shelf and slope. Datasets of both simulated and observed current, temperature and suspended matter from the shelf and the Cap de Creus Canyon which is the main export route towards the continental slope, were first compared to assess the reliability of the simulation. The simulation shows the massive sediment accumulation near the Rhone River mouth (∼56 % of the inputs), the accretion along the mid-shelf mud belt, and the impact of dense shelf water cascading on sediment resuspension and erosion inside the Cap de Creus Canyon. The two studied autumn–winter periods were strongly contrasted in terms of meteorological conditions and subsequent impacts on the sediment dynamics. During the first period (2010–2011) dominated by marine storms, the shelf sediment underwent strong changes, the Rhone River sediment load accumulated in a relatively small area, stock of littoral sands moved to the inner shelf (20–40 m) while inner shelf fine particles fed the mid-shelf mud belt and the upper Cap de Creus Canyon. During the second period (2011–2012) with very little marine wind and a particularly cold winter, sediment on the shelf underwent little change except for a southwestward growth of the Rhone River prodeltaic deposit. Sediment from the southwestern end of the shelf as well as from the upper Cap de Creus Canyon was flushed toward deeper reaches by dense shelf water cascading. Cascading also had a more moderate impact in the various canyons incising the continental shelf. Our work supports the view of an unbalanced sedimentary system, with a deficit mainly over the inner shelf, whose main driver is probably the strong and fast reduction of particulate matter inputs from the Rhone River (by a factor of 4 in less than one century). The tropical Andes has been less studied in terms of erosion processes in comparison to other major mountain ranges in the world. Environmental gradients are steepest along the western flank of the Andes that is characterized by marked differences in vegetation, rough topography with deeply incised canyons, and highly variable and extreme precipitation patterns. Previous efforts mostly focused on sediment fluxes in large rivers draining to e.g. the Amazon basin while small to medium-sized rivers such as the ones flowing towards the Pacific Ocean have been relegated. They highlighted the link between sediment yield, anthropogenic and natural factors, e.g. climate, topography, river runoff, lithology and vegetation cover. In this study, we identified the spatial patterns of specific sediment yield along the western slopes of the Peruvian Andes between 3° and 13° S latitude for 21 catchments. We collected and analysed data from 22 environmental factors to elucidate their importance on spatially varying sediment yield. The sediment load was derived from gauging stations, reservoir sedimentation and water turbidity over a 30-yr period. The specific sediment yield varies strongly along the Peruvian western Andes as a consequence of the spatial variation in climate, topography and land cover controlling sediment production and transport. We reported higher-than-average specific sediment yields for the central part (6°-11°S) with values of 2130 and 2300 t km−2 yr−1 and low and uniform yields of 39 to 551 t km−2 yr−1 in the southern part (11° − 14.5° S). Given the scarcity of data on sediment yield, we included an uncertainty assessment based on bootstrapping approaches as to get a better grasp on the potential range of specific sediment yields in the study region. Using statistical techniques including Spearman correlation rank, univariate and multivariate regression analyses, we were able to determine the importance of the 22 environmental variables on the specific sediment yield. About 55 % of the observed variance can be explained by river discharge (Q 90) and river steepness index (ks 50). By adding an anthropogenic variable based on land cover, the explained variance in SSY increases up to 63 %, however, the effects of land cover on specific sediment yield are not clear because of spurious correlation between land cover, river discharge and topography. Sediment connectivity quantifies the intermediate processes between initial erosion and the corresponding sediment yield. However, fully capturing the variations in sediment connectivity at the event scale and revealing their impact on watershed sediment sources remains challenging. Herein, we established an event-based model to assess sediment connectivity by integrating runoff factors. The spatiotemporal variability of sediment connectivity was evaluated for 58 rainfall events in three heterogeneous watersheds. The degree of sediment connectivity served as an indicator to quantify the proportion of potential sediment transport from units to the watershed outlet, with 1 indicating that the eroded sediment can be fully connected and 0 indicating that it cannot be transported. Moreover, the controls of sediment connectivity on watershed sediment sources and yield were determined. Our results indicated that the watersheds with poor vegetation and dense gullies were characterized by high sediment connectivity during all the rainfall events. The connectivity degree was below 0.5 in approximately 80 % of the watershed area, suggesting that most of the eroded sediment was deposited. Rainfall amount and duration dominated the degree of connectivity of the distal hillslopes, while rainfall intensity exerted a primary control on the transport of sediments from riverbanks to the outlet. In addition, the increase of mismatched area between sediment connectivity and erosion resulted in the decrease of sediment yield. The interaction between sediment connectivity and erosion effectively explained the spatial patterns of sediment sources (p < 0.05). Our work confirmed that the coupled erosion model and sediment connectivity predicted the sediment yield accurately. The predictions for different watersheds portrayed that the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency and Willmott's agreement index were greater than 0.70 and 0.89, respectively. Rill erosion on frozen-stony slope in high-altitude or high-latitude areas commonly undergo freeze–thaw cycle, which is significantly influenced by partially thawed soil with rock fragment. This research aims to investigate the influences of thawed soil depth (TSD) and rock fragment content (RFC) on rill erosion and quantifying the mathematical relationships among them. The laboratory experiment is conducted to evaluate the influences of TSD (1, 2, 5, and 10 cm) and RFC (0%, 10%, 20%, and 50%) on sediment delivery processes by concentrated meltwater flow under three slope gradients of 5°, 10°, and 15°, and three flow rates of 1, 2, and 4 L min−1 at nine rill lengths from 0.5 m to 8.0 m. Five runoff samples are obtained from each experiment run and used to calculate sediment concentration (SC). The SC increases linearly and then exponentially with rill length to approximate the extremum and fits well with piecewise functions. Restrictive effect of TSD and RFC on sediment supply is evident during linear stage induced by shallow TSD, which keeps a long distance under shallow TSD and low RFC to collect sufficient sediment for exponential period. However, TSD and RFC impacts become apparent during the exponential period and lead to higher sediment yield with RFC of 10% and 20% than that on totally thawed soil without rock fragment. In this research, the positive effect on sediment yield increases with RFC increases from 10% to 20%, which may need to be eliminated for efficiency in erosion control. In contrast to low RFC, the protection impact of rock fragment always exerts with RFC of 50%. The experimental data and the functional relationship can provide the basic knowledge for evaluating the model parameters such as soil detachment rate and erodibility of rill erosion on frozen-stony slope. Global deltas are facing severe challenges under the impacts of riverine sediment decline and large estuarine projects. Comparing with abundant research on the Yangtze subaqueous delta, the shoals in shallow waters are poorly understood. The Hengsha Shoal, Yangtze Delta, China, expands during the past ∼65 years, with only slight changes during the pre-projects period and remarkable variations in the projects period. It's now half-surrounded by the Hengsha Reclamation Project and the Deep Waterway Project, both facilitating the recent expansion. The current vertical net rate of change in the study area is −2.2 cm/yr, suggesting an overall balance between sediment deposition and erosion. Spatially, the Hengsha Shoal is currently changing from horizontal expansion to vertical accretion. Considering the spatial patterns of erosion/deposition and residual currents and sediment, modern geomorphic changes in the Hengsha Shoal appear to be dominated by internal sediment transport from deep to shallow waters. Considering further possible changing conditions, the future evolution of this shoal and the resulting potential ecological impacts should be studied further. In this study an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) approach coupled with the sediment erosion model is developed to investigate the sediment bed scour and grain movement under the dam break flows. Two-phase formulations are used in the ISPH numerical algorithms to examine the free surface and bed evolution profiles, in which the entrained sediments are treated as a different fluid component as compared with the water. The sediment bed erosion model is based on the concept of pick-up flow velocity and the sediment is initiated when the local flow velocity exceeds a critical value. The proposed model is used to reproduce the sediment erosion and follow-on entrainment process under an instantaneous dam break flow and the results are compared with those from the weakly compressible moving particle semi-implicit (WCMPS) method as well as the experimental data. It has been demonstrated that the two-phase ISPH model performed well with the experimental data. Predicting the potential impact of fires on runoff and soil erosion requires distributed hydrological modeling methods. This study used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a rainfall-runoff model, to investigate the hydrological consequences of forest fires and their impact on sediment load under different burnt scenarios. For the pre-fire (baseline) scenario, the watershed is calibrated by using the measured discharge and suspended sediment concentration data from the weather station during the time step to estimate post-fire changes at the sub-catchment scale. The total water and sediment yield for the selected sub-catchment in the post-fire scenario with the highest spatial distribution of forest fire, due to the excessive surface runoff (an increase of 14.5%) increased significantly, resulted in 6.5 times increase in sediment yield. The results obtained from the study indicate a significant increase in sediment transport into the stream in the post-fire scenario. A large volume of soil losses occurred during the time step. In contrast, due to removing trees and vegetation from the ground, less evapotranspiration and infiltration occurred in selected sub-catchment areas after forest fires. In terms of watershed management, understanding the consequences of forest fires on hydrological services will be an effective method for sediment budget control. Therefore, applying the rainfall-runoff and erosion models for the watershed with developing plausible forest fire scenarios can be a productive method to deal with the threats and hydrological risks such as soil erosion and sediment transfer to the downstream environment. Abstract: Sediment transport processes in rivers continue to pose a challenge when designing movable-bed physical models, particularly for reproducing the grain sorting and bank erosion (fluvial erosion and mass failure). This paper presents and discusses scale effects of a specific scaling approach for multi-grain size mixtures that preserves similarity of initial motion for each grain size class and of the bank stability coefficient between the model and the prototype, but relaxes strict similarity of the Shields and particle Reynolds numbers. This approach is appropriate when bed load transport near incipient motion conditions is being studied, and allows for larger grain size scales than when full Shields parameter similarity is enforced. As part of an environmental project to rehabilitate sediment transport through bank erosion, this method has been applied to scale a Froude number criterion physical model of a reach of the Old Rhine (France). This has resulted in an undistorted scale of 40, and the use of sand as the model bank material. Each grain size has a different geometrical scale. The time scale for sediment motion is grain size and flow discharge dependent. An average time scale of 6 has therefore been used (four model hours = one prototype day). A strategy devised for the field case consists of two higher, larger island groynes that replace the three existing groynes, producing bank erosion for flow rates below the mean annual flow rate. Extrapolation of model behaviour to the prototype is not a major problem, but the volume of eroded bank material may be underestimated, mainly because of the relaxation of the Shields number similarity and the apparent cohesive properties of the model bank material. The flow routing module in several large-scale erosion and sediment transport models generally adopts simplifications that ignore important physical aspects of river dynamics. In this study we compare for the first time the results generated by a large-scale erosion and sediment transport model, using two different flow routing approaches: a combined Saint-Venant and Muskingum-Cunge method and the Inertial flow routing. For this assessment, simulations are performed with the MGB-SED model. We evaluate sediment characteristics such as suspended sediment load and concentration, floodplain effects, and the flux of suspended sediment within the Madeira River basin. The simulation with the inertial approach presents satisfactory results, similar to those achieved with the combined Saint-Venant approach for lowland rivers and the Muskingum-Cunge method for steeper rivers. Ephemeral gully (EG) is an important linear erosion feature, often occurring at mid-slope position, that can be greatly influenced by upslope inflow and its sediment transport capacity. How sediment concentration in upslope inflow influences downslope EG erosion is still unclear. Thus, field monitoring on a natural hillslope and indoor simulations on a dual-box system were conducted to better understand their relationship. The results showed that both field monitoring and indoor simulation displayed the additional sediment delivery caused by upslope sediment-laden flow, verifying the transport-dominated sediment regime in EG systems. In field observations, the sediment increment coefficient (SIC , ratio of net sediment delivery caused by upslope sediment-laden flow to the total sediment delivery) on an event scale varied from 4.6% to 88.6%. In indoor simulations, the SIC changed from 24.9% to 87.5%. Indoor simulation experiments with a range of 0–378.2 g L−1 sediment concentration supplied by a feeder box, showed that SIC linearly decreased as sediment concentration of upslope inflow increased. Field monitoring showed complicated phenomenon because of natural random variations. For rainfall events with PI 30 (the product of precipitation and maximum 30-minute rainfall intensity) larger than 400 mm2 h−1 (similar to the designed extreme rainfall in laboratory simulations), SIC also generally decreased as sediment concentration of upslope inflow increased, especially when sediment concentration of upslope inflow was smaller than 400 g L−1. Thus, laboratory simulations verified the field monitoring results of extreme rainfall events with large rainfall amounts and intensities. This study illustrated the necessity of in-situ field monitoring and indicated that design of indoor simulation experiments needs more comprehensive considerations on complicated hydrological and sediment conditions. Multi-purpose Artificial Reefs (MPARs) are structures that may provide aesthetically acceptable coastal protection and improve recreational outcomes. Twenty years after construction of the first MPAR, Narrowneck Reef on the Gold Coast of Australia, most of the available literature is still focused on the planning, design and construction of such structures and peer-reviewed publications on their post-construction monitoring, interaction with sediment transport and impacts on coastal morphology are lacking. The aim of this paper is to evaluate how does Narrowneck Reef influence the sediment transport, and morphological changes around the anthropogenic structure, two decades after construction. To do so, a combination of ten high spatial resolution topo-bathymetric surveys from the top of the dune to the 10 m depth captured over 21 months and a series of 60 simulations using a calibrated numerical model were used. Our results demonstrate that: although not expected during design or reported in similar structures, sand can bypass the MPAR around its offshore end; under oblique waves, the longshore currents are deflected as they pass the reef, resulting in a shadow zone on the downdrift side where sand deposits; the bar crest tends to be higher on the reef's updrift side compared to downdrift, indicating that the MPAR can act as a store for sediments, as initially designed. Furthermore, the MPAR can act to stabilise the bar as it moves onshore with a downdrift offset of the inner bar as a result of low oblique wave incidence. The results presented here demonstrate that the short-term response to the MPAR twenty years after construction is more closely related to the updrift build up of sand and the deflection of longshore currents as they encounter the reef than to the dissipation of wave energy. Abstract: The majority of subaqueous sediment on Earth consists of mixtures of cohesive clay and cohesionless sand and silt, but the role of cohesion on the development and stability of sedimentary bedforms is poorly understood. The results of new laboratory flume experiments on bedform development in cohesive, mixed sand–mud beds are compared with the results of previous experiments in which cohesive forces in high concentration clay flows dominated bedform development. Even though both series of mixed sand–mud experiments were conducted at similar flow velocities, the textural and structural properties of the bedforms were sufficiently different to permit the designation of key criteria for identifying bedform generation under cohesive flows against bedform generation on cohesive substrates. These criteria are essential for improving bedform size predictions in sediment transport modelling in modern sedimentary environments and for the reconstruction of depositional processes in the geological record. The current ripples developing on the cohesive, mixed sand–mud beds, with bed mud fractions of up to 18%, were significantly smaller than equivalent bedforms in noncohesive sand. Moreover, the bedform height showed a stronger inversely proportional relationship with initial bed mud fraction than the bedform wavelength. This is in contrast with the bedforms developing under the cohesive clay flows, which tend to increase in size with increasing suspended clay concentration until the flow turbulence is fully suppressed. Selective removal of clay from the mixed beds, i.e., clay winnowing, was found to be an important process, with 82–100% clay entrained into suspension after 2h of bedform development. This winnowing process led to the development of a sand-rich armouring layer. This armouring layer is inferred to have protected the underlying mixed sand–mud from prolonged erosion, and in conjunction with strong cohesive forces in the bed may have caused the smaller size of the bedforms. Winnowing was less efficient for the bedforms developing under the cohesive clay flows, where bedforms consisting of muddy sand were more characteristic. The winnowed sand was also found to heal irregularly scoured topography, thus reestablishing classic quasitriangular bedform shapes. In cohesive flows, the bedforms had more variable shapes, and the healing process was confined to lower transitional plug flows in which strong turbulence is only present close to the sediment bed. Furthermore, the bedforms on the cohesive beds tended to form angle-of-repose cross lamination, whereas low angle cross lamination was more common in bedforms under cohesive flows. In general terms, erosional bedforms prevail when cohesive forces in the bed dominate bedform dynamics, whereas depositional bedforms prevail when cohesive forces in the flow dominate bedform dynamics. Empirical relationships between the proportion of cohesive mud in the mixed sand–mud bed and the development rate and size of the bedforms are defined for future use in field and laboratory studies. Abstract: This laboratory study describes the sediment patterns formed in a sand bed around circular patches of rigid vertical cylinders, representing a patch of reedy emergent vegetation. The patch diameter was much smaller than the channel width. Two patch densities (solid volume fraction 3% and 10%) and two patch diameters (22 and 10cm) were considered. For flows above the threshold of sediment motion, patterns of sediment erosion and deposition were observed around and within the patch. Scouring within the patch was positively correlated with turbulent kinetic energy in the patch. For sparse patches, sediment scoured from within the patch was mostly deposited within one patch diameter downstream of the patch. For dense patches, which experience greater flow diversion, sediment scoured from the patch was carried farther downstream before deposition along the patch centerline. Differences between the sparse and dense patch patterns of deposition are explained in the context of flow diversion and wake structure, which are related to a nondimensional flow blockage parameter. Abstract: The tropics of northern Australia have received relatively little attention with regard to the impact of soil erosion on the many large river systems that are an important part of Australia''s water resource, especially given the high potential for erosion when long dry seasons are followed by intense wet season rain. Here we use 137Cs concentrations to determine the erosion processes supplying sediment to two major northern Australian Rivers; the Daly River (Northern Territory), and the Mitchell River (Queensland). We also present data from five sediment samples collected from a 100km reach of the Cloncurry River, a major tributary of the Flinders River (Queensland). Concentrations of 137Cs in the surface soil and subsurface (channel banks and gully) samples were used to derive ‘best fit’ probability density functions describing their distributions. These modelled distributions are then used to estimate the relative contribution of these two components to the river sediments. Our results are consistent with channel and gully erosion being the dominant source of sediment, with more than 90% of sediment transported along the main stem of these rivers originating from subsoil. We summarize the findings of similar studies on tropical Australian rivers and conclude that the primary source of sediment delivered to these systems is gully and channel bank erosion. Previously, as a result of catchment scale modelling, sheet-wash and rill erosion was considered to be the major sediment source in these rivers. Identifying the relative importance of sediment sources, as shown in this paper, will provide valuable information for land management planning in the region. Abstract: The ability to predict the effects of dam removal in highly sediment-filled systems is increasingly important as the number of such dam removal cases continues to grow. The cost and potential impacts of dam removal are site-specific and can vary substantially depending on local conditions. Of specific concern in sediment-impacted removals is the volume and rate of reservoir deposit erosion. The complexity and potential accuracy of modeling methods used to forecast the effects of such dam removals vary substantially. Current methods range from predictions based on simple analysis of pre-dam channel geometry to sophisticated data-intensive, three-dimensional numerical models. In the work presented here, we utilize data collected from past dam removals to develop an additional tool for predicting the rate and volume of sediment deposit erosion. Through the analysis of sediment, discharge, deposit, removal timeline, channel, and watershed data, in conjunction with post-removal monitoring data from a wide range of dam removal projects, some significant trends in the evolution of reservoir deposits following dam removal can be seen. Results indicate that parameters such as median grain size, level of cohesion, spatial variability of the deposit, and removal timeline are among the most influential factors in determining the rate and volume of sediment erosion. By comparing local conditions of dams and reservoirs slated for removal with those of past removals, we hope that predictions of the rate and volume of sediment deposit erosion can be usefully constrained. Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate four metrics to define the spatially variable (regionalised) hillslope sediment delivery ratio (HSDR). A catchment model that accounted for gully and streambank erosion and floodplain deposition was used to isolate the effects of hillslope gross erosion and hillslope delivery from other landscape processes. The analysis was carried out at the subcatchment (~40km2) and the cell scale (400m2) in the Avon-Richardson catchment (3300km2), south-east Australia. The four landscape metrics selected for the study were based on sediment travel time, sediment transport capacity, flux connectivity, and residence time. Model configurations with spatially-constant or regionalised HSDR were calibrated against sediment yield measured at five gauging stations. The impact of using regionalised HSDR was evaluated in terms of improved model performance against measured sediment yields in a nested monitoring network, the complexity and data requirements of the metric, and the resulting spatial relationship between hillslope erosion and landscape factors in the catchment and along hillslope transects. The introduction of a regionalised HSDR generally improved model predictions of specific sediment yields at the subcatchment scale, increasing model efficiency from 0.48 to >0.6 in the best cases. However, the introduction of regionalised HSDR metrics at the cell scale did not improve model performance. The flux connectivity was the most promising metric because it showed the largest improvement in predicting specific sediment yields, was easy to implement, was scale-independent and its formulation was consistent with sedimentological connectivity concepts. These properties make the flux connectivity metric preferable for applications to catchments where climatic conditions can be considered homogeneous, i.e. in small-medium sized basins (up to approximately 3000km2 for Australian conditions, with the Avon-Richardson catchment being at the upper boundary). The residence time metric improved model assessment of sediment yields and enabled accounting for climatic variability on sediment delivery, but at the cost of greater complexity and data requirements; this metric might be more suitable for application in catchments with important climatic gradients, i.e. large basins and at the regional scale. The application of a regionalised HSDR metric did not increase data or computational requirements substantially, and is recommended to improve assessment of hillslope erosion in empirical, semi-lumped erosion modelling applications. Abstract: Appropriate descriptions of turbulence are important in predicting sediment transport and seabed evolution. We use here a three-dimensional model to investigate the impacts of sediment-induced stratification, erosion parameterization, and turbulence closures on sediment transport and morphological simulations. The model is implemented in the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS), which couples a hydrodynamic model to the General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM) and to a sediment transport model. This sediment transport model calculates both suspended sediment concentrations and bed evolution. A large number of turbulence closures can be tested and we focus on the methods used to calculate the turbulent length scale and the stability functions. Different modelling scenarios are assessed against experimental data of velocity profiles, suspended sediment concentrations, and trench migration in a laboratory flume. Numerical results show that the processes investigated have little impact on the flow velocity profiles, in spite of some differences on the bed shear stress. The only exception is the one-equation turbulence closure, which cannot reproduce velocity profiles appropriately. Sediment-induced stratification, erosion parameterization, and turbulence closures can all have significant impacts on the suspended sediment concentration and the bed evolution. Abstract: We present new major and trace element data, together with U–Pb ages for zircon sand grains from the major tributaries of the Indus River, as well as the adjacent Ghaggar and Yamuna Rivers and from bedrocks within the Sutlej Valley, in order to constrain the origin of the sediment reaching the Arabian Sea. Zircon grains from the upper Indus are generally younger than 200Ma and contrast with those from the eastern tributaries eroded from Himalayan sources. Grains younger than 15Ma, which typify the Nanga Parbat Massif, comprise no more than 1–2% of the total, even in the upper Indus, showing that this terrain is not a major sediment producer, in contrast with the Namche Barwe Massif in the eastern Himalayan syntaxis. The Sutlej and Yamuna Rivers in particular are very rich in Lesser Himalayan-derived 1500–2300Ma zircons, while the Chenab is dominated by 750–1250Ma zircons, mostly eroded from the Greater Himalaya. The upper Indus, Chenab and Ravi yield zircon populations broadly consistent with the outcrop areas, but the Jhelum and the Sutlej contain many more 1500–2300Ma zircons than would be predicted from the area of Lesser Himalayan rock within their drainages. A significant population of grains younger than 200Ma in the sands of the Thar Desert indicates preferential eolian, monsoon-related transport from the Indus lower reaches, rather than reworking from the local rivers. Modelling of observed zircon ages close to the delta contrasts with modern water discharge. The delta is rich in zircons dating 1500–2300Ma, while discharge from modern rivers carrying such grains is low. The modest size of the Sutlej, the richest source of these materials in the modern system, raises the possibility that the compositionally similar Yamuna used to flow westwards in the recent past. Our data indicate a non-steady state river with zircon transport times of 5–10k.y. inferred from earlier zircon dating of delta sands. The modern delta zircons image an earlier, likely Early-Mid Holocene, erosional state, in which the Lesser Himalaya were more important as sediment suppliers. Early-Mid Holocene sands show much less erosion from the Karakoram–Transhimalaya compared to those deposited at the Last Glacial Maximum, or calculated from the modern discharge. Abstract: Cosmogenic nuclide-based denudation rates and published erosion rates from recent river gauging in the Napo River basin (Peruvian Amazonia) are used to decipher erosion and sedimentation processes along a 600 km long transect from the headwaters to the lowlands. The sediment-producing headwaters to the Napo floodplain are the volcanically active Ecuadorian Andes, which discharge sediment at a cosmogenic nuclide-based denudation rate of 0.49 ± 0.12 mm/yr. This denudation rate was calculated from an average 10Be nuclide concentration of 2.2 ± 0.5 × 104 at/g(Qz) that was measured in bedload-derived quartz. Within the Napo lowlands, a significant drop in trunk stream 10Be nuclide concentrations relative to the Andean hinterland is recorded, with an average concentration of 1.2 ± 0.5 × 104 at/g(Qz). This nuclide concentration represents a mixture between the 10Be nuclide concentration of eroded floodplain deposits, and that of sediment eroded from the Andean hinterland that is now carried in the trunk stream. Evidence for addition of sediment from the floodplain to the trunk stream is provided by published decadal-scale sediment flux measurements from gauging stations operated in the Napo basin, from which an increase from 12 × 106 t/yr at the outflow of the Andes to ∼47 × 106 t/yr at the confluence with the Solimões (upper Amazon River) is recorded. Therefore, approximately 35 × 106 t of floodplain sediment are added annually to the active Napo trunk stream. Combined with our nuclide concentration measurements, we can estimate that the eroded floodplain deposits yield a nuclide concentration of ∼0.9 × 104 at/g(Qz) only. Under steady state surface erosion conditions, this nuclide concentration would translate to a denudation rate of the floodplain of ∼0.47 mm/yr. However, we have no geomorphologic explanation for this high denudation rate within the low relief floodplain and thus suggest that this low-nuclide concentrated sediment is Andean-derived and would have been deposited in the floodplain at a time when erosion rates of the Andes were elevated. Therefore, the recently eroded floodplain sediment provides an Andean “paleo denudation rate” of 1.2 mm/yr that was calculated for high Andean production rates. A likely period for elevated erosion rates is the LGM, where climate and vegetation cover of the Andes differed from that of the Holocene. A possible cause for the erosion of the floodplain is the tectonic uplift of the Eastern Andes, which progressively shifts the Napo River northwards. Abstract: It is shown that the middle Cretaceous succession in the northern Cordilleran foreland basin consists of several-million-year tectonically-driven cycles comprising two components: strata deposited in an underfilled basin with a prominent forebulge zone and strata deposited in an overfilled basin lacking evidence of a forebulge. The episodic thrusting of the Cordilleran orogenic wedge and its rich sediment supply to the basin are two main controlling factors for the formation of these cycles. A qualitative model of several-million-year tectonically-driven underfilled–overfilled cycle for migration and stratigraphic fill in this basin is proposed. During the early underfilled period (orogenic loading period), due to orogenic loading of emplaced thrust sheets, flexural subsidence is created in the region proximal to the mountain belt and a prominent forebulge is developed. During the late underfilled period (early orogenic unloading period), as the cratonward migration of the subsidence center of sediment loading in the foredeep zone, forebulge zones and backbulge zones migrate cratonwards, forming a diachronic erosion surface in the central basin. During the overfilled period (late orogenic unloading period), a prominent erosion forms in the proximal basin and a peripheral sag develops above the forebulge area of the previous underfilled period. This model may provide a pattern to subdivide sedimentary successions in the Cordilleran foreland basin. Using this model, alternative interpretations are suggested for some important, but controversial stratigraphic phenomena in the Cretaceous Cordilleran foreland basin: traditionally defined eustatic highstands, wide sedimentation area of the basin, erosion surfaces and widespread subtle topographic uplifts in the central basin, high-frequency coarsening-up cycles, extensively distributed erosive-based sandstones and conglomerates enclosed in marine mudstones. Abstract: The Blue Nile supplies the Nile River with the largest proportion of water and sediment. Nevertheless, very few, often contrasting data are reported in the literature about its sediment yield. This paper deals with detailed field measurement of suspended sediment transport taken at Khartoum during three flood seasons in the late 1960s. The pattern of suspended sediment concentration, discharge and grain-size variation with flow is analysed and suspended sediment yield is calculated and compared with data from different sources. No bedload transport measurements are reported in the literature for the Blue Nile. The flow data measured in the field consent to select several dune geometry criteria and to adopt the dune bedforms migration method to calculate bedload transport. The same procedure is applied also to the bedload data measured in four reaches of the Nile River, downstream of the High Aswan Dam, with channel and sediment characteristics comparable with those of the Blue Nile at Khartoum, to ascertain which dune geometry criterion provided the most reliable results. The and equations predict similar values of bedload transport that are compared with the very few bedload data assessed by other authors using different equations and methods. Abstract: Plutonium fallout from atmospheric nuclear-weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s constitutes an artificial tracer suitable for the study of recent soil erosion and sediment accumulation rates. Traditionally 137Cs has been the fallout isotope of choice for such studies, but the plutonium isotopes confer a number of advantages, which can be realised using the ultra-sensitive detection technique of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). As a first application of plutonium to a whole-of-basin study, Pu has been measured in both soil and sediment across the catchment of the Herbert River, which is one of the major rivers draining into Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Lagoon. Its catchment includes undisturbed areas as well as regions of pasture and sugar cultivation. The Pu measurements allow the relative contributions of surface and gully erosion from the different land use areas to be determined, and permit the discharged material to be apportioned between the relevant sources. Abstract: Steady state suspended-load of sediment transported in flow over erodible beds usually is treated by the advection-diffusion approach, though in recent years, it is being treated as a two-phase flow phenomenon incorporating kinetics of sediment particles. Among the advection-diffusion approaches, Rouse''s (1937) equation is the well-known, although a number of researchers in later periods have attempted to improve it by modifying the mixing length concept taking into account other aspects. In this paper, the advection-diffusion approach and associated logarithmic law of flow velocity are revisited. It is concluded from the logarithmic law that the Reynolds shear stress is a linear function of height above the bed, which reduces to bed shear stress in the case of a long horizontal channel. As a consequence, it is shown that the volumetric concentration of sediment is best approximated by the sum of two power laws of height above the bed. Abstract: Pinpointing erosional ‘hot spots’ or sediment source areas within a watershed can be difficult because of the highly non-linear and episodic nature of effective runoff and sediment transport. Continuous monitoring of stream networks can provide insight into sediment source areas not possible from routine sampling by capturing episodic events and integrating entire storm events. This paper presents the results of a three-year study of spring snowmelt runoff in watersheds of Lake Tahoe, California, USA, using a network of nine nephelometric turbidometers. We estimate that montane badlands, comprising 1.2% of the Ward Creek watershed (25 km2), contributed 10–39% of snowmelt-derived suspended sediment load. The badlands are comprised of poorly-vegetated and deeply-incised gullies formed in parent material of Miocene volcanic mudflow breccia. The larger (29.5 km2) Blackwood Creek watershed also showed high relative erosion rates from volcanic terrain. Tributaries draining forested granitic and metasedimentary headwater regions had minimal sediment loads. Monitoring networks indicated that temporary main channel storage regulated release of fine sediment eroded from steep headwater slopes. Abstract: Accurate prediction of longshore sediment transport in the nearshore zone is essential for control of shoreline erosion and beach evolution. In this paper, a hybrid Adaptive-Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), CERC, Walton–Bruno (WB) and Van Rijn (VR) formulae are used to predict and model longshore sediment transport in the surf zone. The architecture of ANFIS consisted of three inputs (breaking wave height), (breaking angle), (wave period) and one output (longshore sediment transport rate). For statistical comparison of predicted and measured sediment transport, bias, root mean square error and scatter index are used. The longshore sediment transport rate (LSTR) and wave characteristics at a 4 km-long beach on the central west coast of India are used as case studies. The CERC, WB and VR methods are also applied to the same data. Results indicate that the errors of the ANFIS model in predicting wave parameters are less than those of the empirical formulas. The scatter index of the CERC, WB and VR methods in predicting LSTR is 51.9%, 27.9% and 22.5%, respectively, while the scatter index of the ANFIS model in the prediction of LSTR is 17.32%. A comparison of results reveals that the ANFIS model provides higher accuracy and reliability for LSTR estimation than the other techniques. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Sediment output (solid and dissolved load) from two small Alpine rivers (Partnach and Lahnenwiesgraben in the Bavarian Alps) was measured during three summer field seasons from 2001–2003. There is high spatial variability of sediment output between the catchments and a high temporal variability between observation periods. Sediment transport in the Partnach river (Reintal) is dominated by solute load, whereas the Lahnenwiesgraben river transports a much greater proportion of solid load. This difference can mainly be explained by the different lithologies of the systems. The Reintal catchment is dominated by massive Triassic limestone. In the Lahnenwiesgraben catchment, in addition to limestones, unconsolidated rocks, marls and mudstone layers are significant. Furthermore, large rockslide dams in the Partnach valley isolate large parts of the Reintal catchment from solid load output. The components of fluvial sediment transport were, where possible, calculated by using flow duration curves and rating curve techniques. In the Lahnenwiesgraben event specific rating curves were used to determine suspended load. On the broad database of 55 measured flood events in the Lahnenwiesgraben a good correlation (r Pearson =0.9) between event peak discharge and suspended load of the event was established. Effective discharge was calculated for the different types of sediment load (solid and dissolved) and total load. In the Reintal effective discharge for total load is found in low flow classes close to mean discharge, because sediment output is dominated by dissolved load, which has its maximum efficiency at low and moderate discharges. Abstract: Intensity and spatio-temporal variability of fluvial sediment transfers and mechanical fluvial denudation were analyzed in the periglacial Latnjavagge catchment (9km2; 950–1440m a.s.l.; 68.20N, 18.30E) in Arctic-oceanic northernmost Swedish Lapland. The present-day rates of fluvial sediment transfer are low. The mean annual mechanical fluvial denudation rate at the inlet of lake Latnjajaure, as calculated after five years of process monitoring (2000–2004), and excluding a “rare rainfall event” which caused 3.2 times higher suspended sediment transport during one day as compared to the total mean annual suspended sediment transport, is 2.3t km−2 yr−1. In years without “rare rainfall events”, most of the total annual sediment load is transported in a few days during annual snowmelt runoff. In the calculation of longer-term sediment budgets, rare rainfall events like the July 20th–21st, 2004 event have to be considered as essential components. Reliable estimation of the recurrence intervals of such events is problematic. The pattern of ice patches and snow fields within the valley, the steepness of streams and channels and the location of areas showing slushflow activity are the major factors controlling spatial variability of mechanical fluvial denudation in the drainage basin. The five lakes in Latnjavagge, especially lake Latnjajaure, are significant sediment traps and ground below 1300m a.s.l. is protected by a very stable and closed vegetation cover and rhizosphere across the entire lower catchment. Abstract: High frequency measurements of water depth, current velocity and suspended sediment concentration were used to investigate sediment transport processes in the swash zones of a dissipative beach and a steeper (intermediate) beach. Infragravity frequency motions dominated velocity spectra of the dissipative beach swash, while incident wave frequencies dominated the velocity spectrum of the intermediate beach swash. Velocity variance, the ratio of local wave height to water depth, mean bed shear stress and the mean friction velocity were greater on the intermediate beach. Mean suspended sediment concentrations were an order of magnitude greater on the intermediate beach. Infragravity frequencies dominated the oscillatory component of sediment transport on the dissipative beach. Incident wave frequency sediment transport dominated the intermediate beach. A maximum in the net shoreward transport occurred in approximately the mid swash zone on both beaches, suggesting accretion in the shoreward half of the swash, and erosion in the seaward part of the swash. Abstract: The hydrologic regime of the Tiber River basin in central Italy has been impacted considerably in the last decades by intensive anthropic activities, and hydraulic works in particular (e.g. hydropower reservoirs, land use modification). In the Tiber River the wash load, in particular, plays an important role in sediment transport, and the knowledge of this hydrological variable is very important for the evaluation of medium–long-term dynamic of shoreline, and the evaluation of reservoir landfill. The Ripetta flow gauge, located in downtown Rome, has been continuously monitoring the daily discharge for decades, while daily sediment load measurements are available only for short terms. In this research, the yearly sediment rate is simulated using a simple stochastic model based on the evaluation of sediment rating curves. The sediment rating curve, i.e. the average relation between discharge and suspended sediment concentration for a specific location, is estimated using a power law model. The fitting curve, obtained by regression analysis, lacks the physical characterization of the phenomenon, often represented by the empirical evidences of erosion severity and the erosional power of river. Model results provide useful insights on the impact of recent hydraulic works on the sediment transport regime. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We have measured 238U–234U–230Th radioactive disequilibria in five size fractions of colloids and suspended sediments for four rivers from the Murray–Darling River basin (SE Australia). Continuous compositional trends of composition are observed for (234U/238U) and (230Th/238U) activity ratios over the range of size fractions studied. They are explained by the variable contribution of two components: detrital alumino-silicates and organic matter. Using relationships between activity ratios and the loss-on-ignition, it is possible to estimate the U-series isotopic composition of both detrital and organic end-members, which provide the best estimate for the composition of the true detrital phase (i.e. controlled only by the removal of elements through weathering) and the true dissolved phase (i.e. colloid-free), respectively. When performing a single filtration at 0.2 μm, it appears that size fractions > and <0.2 μm underestimate the disequilibrium in both the true detrital and dissolved phases, respectively. We show that erosion does not currently operate in steady state in the Murray–Darling basin and catchment soils are currently being degraded. This could be a consequence of the intensification of agriculture and deforestation over the past 100 yr. The residence time of sediments in the different sub-basins is calculated by computing the composition of the detrital phase with a continuous weathering model. It yields 11±2 kyr for the Darling River basin, only 2–3±1 kyr for the Murray River and 7±2 kyr for the Goulburn River. These values are correlated with the age of changes in river dynamics, in turn probably controlled by climate fluctuation, and indicate the age of the modern river system for each sub-basin.
