The paper and pulp industry is one of the major industries that generate large amount of solid waste with high moisture content. Numerous opportunities exist for valorisation of waste paper sludge, although this review focuses on primary sludge with high cellulose content. The most mature options for paper sludge valorisation are fermentation, anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis. In this review, biochemical and thermal processes are considered individually and also as integrated biorefinery. The objective of integrated biorefinery is to reduce or avoid paper sludge disposal by landfilling, water reclamation and value addition. Assessment of selected processes for biorefinery varies from a detailed analysis of a single process to high level optimisation and integration of the processes, which allow the initial assessment and comparison of technologies. This data can be used to provide key stakeholders with a roadmap of technologies that can generate economic benefits, and reduce carbon wastage and pollution load. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We examine consequences of new energy technologies in the pulp and paper industry with respect to net CO2 emissions and oil use. The entire production chain from the extraction of primary resources is included in the analysis. Stand-alone production of electricity and transportation fuel from biomass is included to balance the systems compared, so that they produce the same CO2 emission and oil use reductions. The technologies considered are black liquor gasification (BLG) with electricity and motor fuels production in chemical pulp mills and increased energy efficiency in thermomechanical pulp mills. The technologies are evaluated with respect to net CO2 emission, oil use, primary energy use, biomass use and monetary cost. We find that BLG in chemical pulp mills is favourable compared to stand-alone production of fuels and electricity from biomass. It is more efficient to implement BLG with motor fuels production and stand-alone electricity production from biomass, than to implement BLG with electricity production and stand-alone production of motor fuels. Increased energy efficiency in refining of thermomechanical pulp gives CO2 savings more efficiently than stand-alone production of electricity from biomass. Sensitivity analysis indicates that our conclusions are robust with respect to energy and biomass prices and the choice of coal or natural gas for marginal electricity. Newsprint from thermomechanical pulp would require slightly less biomass and have lower costs than paper from chemical pulp, per metric ton (t) product, when the systems are also required to render the same oil use and CO2 emission reductions. Substituting mineral fillers for 25% of the chemical pulp changes the balance in favour of the chemical pulp paper. At an oil price of 40 US$/barrel, all studied pulp and paper mill technology improvements give unchanged or reduced monetary costs also when oil use and CO2 emissions are not balanced with stand-alone bioenergy plants. Abstract The paper and pulp industry (PPI) produces high quantities of solid and liquid discharge and is regarded as the most polluting industry in the world causing adverse effects to environments and human beings. Hence changes in the way PPI sludge and waste materials are treated is urgently required. Nearly, 10 million tons of waste is generated per year, however PPI waste is enriched with many organic chemicalscontaining a high percentage of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose which can be used as valuable raw materials for the production of bioenergy and value-added chemicals. Pretreatment of complex lignocellulosic materials of PPI waste is difficult because of the cellulose crystallinity and lignin barrier. At present most of this waste is recycled in a conventional treatment approach through biological and chemical processes, incurring high cost and low returns. Henceefficient pretreatment techniques are required by which complete conversion of PPI waste is possible. Therefore, the present chapter provides the scope of integration of pretreatment methods through which bioenergy recovery is possible during the PPI waste treatment. Detailed information is presented on the various pre-treatment techniques (chemical, mechanical, enzymatic and biological) in order to increase the efficiency of PPI waste treatment and energy recovery from PPI waste. Along with acid and alkali based efficient chemical treatment process, physical methods (i.e. shearing, high-pressure homogenization, etc.), biochemical techniques (whole cell-based and enzyme-based) and finally biological techniques (e.g. aerobic and anaerobic treatment) are discussed. During each of the treatment processes, scope of energy recovery and bottlenecks of the processes were elaborated. Abstract: To overcome declining markets and low-cost competition, Canadian pulp and paper (P&P) mills are considering the diversification of their product platform. Investing in bioenergy is emerging as a promising way to boost the sector. In this paper, we present a mathematical programming approach to evaluate the profitability of bioenergy investments in the case of a P&P mill, while assessing technical and associated economic risks. The mill, called the integrated forest biorefinery (IFBR), could produce a set of high-value bioproducts from biomass generated in the mill or supplied from outside. P&P activity generates residues, such as black liquor and pulp sludge, which could be used to produce bioenergy. P&P activity should then be well managed, by considering the possibility of temporarily stopping the production of P&P, while assuming the costs associated with the shutdowns. The objective is to develop a mathematically-based approach for investors and stakeholders, within the forest sector that aims to optimise the value creation network of the IFBR and to maximise the profitability of future investments in bioenergy, while optimising the existing P&P activity. A novel electrohydrolysis pretreatment enhances methane production from lignocellulose material during anaerobic digestion. A biochemical methane potential assay was carried out to determine the effect of direct current and the efficacy of electrohydrolysis pretreatment on biogas production. Methane yield was increased by 13.8%, to 301 ± 3 mL CH 4 /g VS, when lignocellulosic waste was pretreated with electrohydrolysis. A net energy gain of 13,224 kJ was realized after electrohydrolysis pretreatment, which was 1.51 times higher than reported for thermal pretreatment. In addition, two kinetic models were used, including the modified Gompertz model to reproduce the experimental data. These finding support the potential for increased methane recovery from lignocellulosic waste using electrohydrolysis as a pretreatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was installed to replace the conventional anaerobic lagoon treating bagasse wash wastewater from agro-based pulp and paper mill, to generate bio-energy and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The plant was designed to treat 12MLd−1 of wastewater having two 5ML capacity reactors, 5.75kgCODm−3 d−1 organic loading rate and 20h hydraulic retention time. In the plant 80–85% COD reduction was achieved with biogas production factor of 520Lkg−1 COD reduced. In 11 months 4.4 millionm3 of biogas was generated from bagasse wash wastewater utilizing UASB process. Utilization of the biogas in the Lime Kiln saved 2.14ML of furnace oil in 9 months. Besides significant economic benefits, furnace oil saving reduced 6.4GgCO2 emission from fossil fuel and conversion of the anaerobic lagoon into anaerobic reactor reduced 2.1Gg methane emission which is equal to 43.8Gg of CO2. Ample interest for more efficient utilization of bio-based residues has emerged in the Nordic pulp and paper (P&P) industry, which uses virgin wood as feedstock. Although different bioenergy retrofit technologies for production of liquid, solid, and gaseous bioenergy products have been applied in the existing P&P mills, the number of installations remains small. The lack of profound knowledge of existing bioenergy retrofits hinders the replication and market uptake of potential technologies. This review synthesises the existing knowledge of European installations and identifies the key drivers and barriers for implementation to foster the market uptake of potential technologies. The bioenergy retrofits were reviewed in terms of technical maturity, drivers, barriers and market potential. Based on this evaluation, common drivers and barriers towards wider market uptake were outlined from political, economic, social, technical, environmental, and legal perspective. Technologies already commercially applied include anaerobic fermentation of sludge, bark gasification, tall oil diesel and bioethanol production, whereas lignin extraction, biomethanol production, hydrothermal liquefaction and hydrothermal carbonization are being demonstrated or first applications are under construction. The findings of this review show that a stable flow of residues at P&P mills creates a solid base for retrofitting. New innovative bio-based products would allow widening the companies' product portfolios and creating new businesses. Also, European Union's (EU) legislation drives towards advanced biofuels production. This paper presents an inclusive approach with focus on energy use and recovery in wastewater management, including wastewater treatment (WWT) and sludge handling. Process data from three Swedish mills and a mathematical model were used to evaluate seven sludge handling strategies. The results indicate that excess energy use in WWT processes counters the potential energy recovery in the sludge handling systems. Energy use in WWT processes is recommended to aim for sufficient effluent treatment, not for sludge reduction. Increased secondary sludge production is favourable from an energy point of view provided it is used as a substrate for heat, biogas or electricity production. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents the first estimate of global water use in the forestry sector related to roundwood production for lumber, pulp, paper, fuel and firewood. For the period 1961–2010, we estimate forest evaporation at a high spatial resolution level and attribute total water consumption to various forest products, including ecosystem services. Global water consumption for roundwood production increased by 25% over 50 years to 961 × 10 9 m 3 /y (96% green; 4% blue) in 2001–2010. The water footprint per m 3 of wood is significantly smaller in (sub)tropical forests compared to temperate/boreal forests, because (sub)tropical forests host relatively more value next to wood production in the form of other ecosystem services. In terms of economic water productivity and energy yield from bio-ethanol per unit of water, roundwood is rather comparable with major food, feed and energy crops. Recycling of wood products could effectively reduce the water footprint of the forestry sector, thereby leaving more water available for the generation of other ecosystem services. Intensification of wood production can only reduce the water footprint per unit of wood if the additional wood value per ha outweighs the loss of value of other ecosystem services, which is often not the case in (sub)tropical forests. Abstract: Land-use change (LUC) estimated by economic models has sparked intense international debate. Models estimate how much LUC might be induced under prescribed scenarios and rely on assumptions to generate LUC values. It is critical to test and validate underlying assumptions with empirical evidence. Furthermore, this modeling approach cannot answer if any specific indirect effects are actually caused by biofuel policy. The best way to resolve questions of causation is via scientific methods. Kim and Dale attempt to address the question of if, rather than how much, market-induced land-use change is currently detectable based on the analysis of historic evidence, and in doing so, explore some modeling assumptions behind the drivers of change. Given that there is no accepted approach to estimate the global effects of biofuel policy on land-use change, it is critical to assess the actual effects of policies through careful analysis and interpretation of empirical data. Abstract: The global business environment of today requires industries to be increasingly agile in order to create added value. There is a particularly urgent need to innovate and redefine business models in the mature pulp and paper industry, which is continually announcing mill closures and reporting persistent profitability problems. This paper focuses on the emerging forest energy business, which appears to offer many novel opportunities for both the forest and the energy industry. We conducted a qualitative dissensus-based online Delphi study and carried out themed expert interviews in order to identify the main industry- and company-level factors that are most likely to influence the bioenergy sector, its value-creation potential and forest and energy companies'' future roles in it. The Delphi technique proved to be a valuable research tool with which we were able to obtain comprehensive information on a subject that lacks historical and financial data, and yet requires input from many quarters. The results suggest that the complementary resources held by forest and energy companies make collaboration in the bioenergy business favorable. Moreover, the procurement and logistics of forest raw material appear to be key success factors in terms of yielding the most synergetic gains. Uncertainty about policy interventions nevertheless causes concern given their relatively rapid effect on the prospects of the bioenergy business. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In order to improve corn stalk conversion into total reducing sugar effectively, steam-assisted alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis was studied. This result showed that cellulose and hemicelluloses contents in corn stalk were decreased to 7.01% and 4.41% (P < 0.05), and total reducing sugar yield was increased to 335.09 mg/g biomass (P < 0.05), when corn stalk was pretreated with steam and alkali (0.8% NaOH + 1.2% CaO, W/V) for 1.0 h at a ratio of alkaline solution to corn stalk of 5:1 (V/W), followed by enzymatic hydrolysis at 22.5 FPU/g biomass cellulase for 48 h. The synthetical enzymatic hydrolysis conditions of pretreated corn stalk were pH 5.0, 50 °C, 60 filter paper unit (FPU)/g biomass and 48 h reaction time, in which total reducing sugar yield was 358.97 mg/g biomass (P < 0.05). The further response-surface methodology results showed that the total reducing sugar reached 493.74 mg/g biomass under the conditions of 52.39 FPU/g biomass cellulase, 6599.99 U/g biomass β-glucanase and 40 h reaction time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and pore structure analyses indicated that steam-assisted alkaline pretreatment plus enzymatic hydrolysis were effective in breaking the crystal structure of corn stalk for increasing total reducing sugar yield. • Steam-assisted alkaline pretreatment broke down crystal structure of corn stalk. • Physiochemical pretreatment increased hemicellulose degradation rates. • Enzymatic hydrolysis conditions were optimized by central composite design. • Cellulose and hemicelluose contents were decreased by enzymolysis. • Reducing sugar yield was increased by physiochemical pretreatment plus enzymolysis. Sewage sludge as a byproduct of industrial and municipal wastewaters treatment is produced worldwide at large quantities. This organic waste contains nutrients, pathogens, heavy metals, organic pollutants and other toxic substances. In recent years, the significant increase in the amount of sludge as an important environmental issue, which is considered both a threat and an opportunity, has highlighted the issue of its proper management. In recent decades, various methods have been used to manage and energy recovery from sewage sludge, including pyrolysis, incineration, gasification, anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, landfill, composting, lime and microbial fuel cell. Nowadays bioenergy production from sewage sludge attracted the attention of environmentalists due to environmental and economic considerations. In this regard, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gained a great importance as an alternative energy conversion method for bioenergy production. This system converts the chemical energy in the organic substance directly into valuable electrical energy by the catalytic reaction of microorganisms. The effectiveness of the system depends on the reactor configuration, operational and environmental parameters. Identifying and optimizing these parameters are important to increase the system efficiency. In this paper, we reviewed and discussed the effects of different parameters on the treatment and electricity generation from waste activated sludge (WAS) using MFC system such as nature of electrode materials, oxygen flow rate, reactor design, substrates and pH. Agricultural crop residues are the lignocellulosic biomass left in the field after harvesting valuable crop parts. These pose a significant concern due to the waste generated annually, burdening management and contributing to pollution. Numerous studies carried out over decades have demonstrated some effective utilization through thermochemical conversion as a potential feedstock, there is not a proper account of their trends. This systematic review addresses a critical gap in the literature by analyzing the sustainable management of crop residues thermochemically, offering insights into research trends, technologies, and future directions for their utilization as biofuel and bioactive value-added-product applications, that has been largely overlooked in previous narrative reviews. Studies for review were searched on web of science, scopus, and google scholar through a carefully developed search syntax and backward snowball methods. Total 343 papers published in past 23 year matched the study inclusion criteria were selected and meaningful outcomes from meticulous analysis of these studies have been extracted. Research publications show exponential growth, primarily focused on laboratory-based experiments. The most studied process was pyrolysis, and the product was biochar. There has been significant progress in process optimization, integration, and product diversification, paving the way for diverse applications. Recent trends indicate a shift from conventional pyrolysis and gasification towards sustainability, circular economy, efficiency enhancements, and novel applications, reflecting a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and resource maximization. Additionally, the challenges linked with recent innovations are discussed, along with recommendations for future research endeavors concerning these systems. The adoption of circular economy and life cycle thinking (LCT) tools plays an important role in implementing and evaluating sustainable development strategies of companies. However, until now there is no review paper on the application of these concepts in the biomass supply chain (BSC). This paper aims to review the application of circular economy and LCT in BSC. PRISMA method was used for the review. The analysis was conducted to examine case studies focusing on (1) approaches and practices of applying circularity economy concepts such as circular economy principles, strategies, indicators, business models, (2) application of LCT tools and sustainable concepts. Besides, benefits, limitations, and discussion of applying these concepts and tools were conducted. The review results show that four circular economy principles are applied (reuse, recycle, reduction and recovery), in forms of three strategies: use innovative technologies, improving operational activities and extending the BSC. Regarding LCT, most of the studies focus on environmental assessment, with some extension to economic and social impacts. European Union set an ambitious 20% target of its energy consumption from renewable resources 20% by 2020. The aim of this paper is to assess the contribution of solid biomass to renewables use in the EU. During 2010–2018 the share of solid biomass increased from 6.1% to 8.0% of total GFEC, an increase of almost 300 PJ. The paper identifies leading and lagging countries in biomass development by focusing on their current solid biomass share in GFEC. The study shows that leading countries have reached or are close to reach their target, while lagging countries are far from their targets. ETS and non-ETS targets play both a role in the growing use of solid biomass. Despite some challenges, the forest biomass sector allows the sustainable increase of bioenergy in the EU, when the harvest level remains below 90% of net annual increment (except for natural disasters) and there is a stable division between fuelwood and harvested wood for solid products. Forests available for wood supply (FAWS) should be treated differently from non-FAWS areas (protected forests, biodiversity areas), because of different carbon dynamics. This systematic review analyses the potential of cocoa residues for energy conversion using anaerobic digestion and evaluates strategies for optimizing methane production yields, retrieving information from papers published on anaerobic digestion of cocoa residues in journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases. The articles were selected according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. The effects of operational and compositional variables were evaluated by multivariate (PCA) and bivariate (correlation) statistics. A total of twenty-two studies were selected for this systematic review, and five of them were considered for meta-analysis. This search evidenced a lack of studies on the anaerobic digestion of cocoa residues, leading to, for example, high heterogeneity in methane yields between studies (163 to 382 mL CH4 gVS−1). Operational and compositional conditions in the anaerobic digestion were comparable (statistically significant correlations), and anaerobic digestion was considered efficient in the treatment of cocoa residues. In the meta-analysis, optimizing strategies did not significantly affect methane yields. Nonetheless, pretreatment using organic solvents can lead to inhibitory effects on the process. Anaerobic co-digestion can be considered a satisfactory strategy depending on the origin of the co-substrate. In conclusion, this review has worldwide relevance for the waste treatment sector and regarding the search for sustainable energy alternatives. De-inking sludge (DIS) is generated as a waste stream from secondary fibre paper mills during the de-inking stage of the paper pulping process; in order to ensure end of waste to landfill an alternative valorisation route is required for this waste. At the same time, an inexpensive sacrificial catalyst is essential to achieve the techno-economic feasibility of biomass gasification and pyrolysis. The present work explores the potential of DIS char as a catalyst using a 2 kg/h Thermo-Catalytic Reforming (TCR®) system, which involves intermediate pyrolysis combined with a unique integrated catalytic reforming step. Wood was used for the TCR catalytic experiments with a DIS char to biomass ratio (wt.%) of 0.3:1 and 0.65:1. Results have shown that hydrogen relative volumes and syngas yields, are positively correlated with the increase in DIS char to wood ratio. Average hydrogen relative volumes of 28.30 vol.% and syngas yields of 47.64 wt.% were achieved. Organic liquid yields were significantly reduced in favour of higher syngas yields, implying the suitability of DIS char as a tar reduction catalyst in gasification or pyrolysis. The influence of TCR DIS char is less profound on the chemical distribution in the organic phase of bio-oil; a reduction on PAHs from 38.82 % to 26.70 % though was determined with the use of DIS char, according to the relative abundance peak areas from the GC–MS chromatograms. Abstract: Eucalyptus globulus Labill. is managed in commercial plantations for the pulp and paper industry as a coppice system. For stand reforestation the stumps are uprooted and at present used as biofuel. In this study, the biomass of stumps collected in six eucalypt stands in Portugal was evaluated in terms of physical, chemical and fuel properties. Stumps had basic density between 0.55gcm−3 and 0.71gcm−3, and the chemical composition showed 15.1% total extractives (mainly ethanol soluble extractives, 10.5%), 24.8% lignin and 67.0% holocellulose. In terms of thermal properties the stumps presented 18.9MJkg−1 for higher heating value (HHV) and 0.6%, 81.1% and 18.3% respectively for ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon. The elemental composition (C=51.0%; H=5.8%; O=45.3%; Cl=0.04%) has adequate values for use as woodfuel. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This virtual special issue of ENERGY features 35 top-notch selected extended papers, which were showcased at the CORFU 2022 9th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management (https://corfu2022.uest.gr) in Corfu Island, Greece from June 15th to 18th, 2022. This special issue of Energy focuses on the cutting-edge research on waste-to-energy (WtE) in the circular economy, greenhouse gas reduction, and sustainable waste management systems that generate energy. This editorial paper provides a brief overview of the key methodologies, discoveries, and future horizons within the 35 selected papers. The contributions in this special issue are divided into five categories: 1) biofuels and biopower; 2) municipal waste management; 3) emerging resource utilization techniques; 4) current research of waste-to-energy for circular economy; and 5) advancements in waste-to-energy technologies. This article analyzed the location and concentration of forest bioelectricity in Brazil, from 2000 to 2019, available from the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and used the following indicators: Location Quotient (QL), Concentration Index [CR (k)], Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), Hoover Index (H) and Coefficient of Gini (G). The main results showed that the supply of electricity from Brazilian forest biomass increased from 562.90 MW and 11 thermoelectric plants in 2000 to 3532.61 MW and 115 thermoelectric plants in 2019, providing an average growth of 10.15% yy of the granted installed power and 13.20% p.a. of thermoelectric power plants. The QL inferred a high concentration of energy supply from black liquor (Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Espírito Santo, Bahia, Maranhão and Mato Grosso do Sul) and forest residues in several states, mainly in the North region. At the state level, the CR (4), CR (8) and HHI indexes indicated a deconcentration trend. The identification of the location and concentration pattern that the greatest offer was associated with industrial pulp and paper complexes. Biomass sources are geographically scattered, and seasonal changes influence their availability. Variations in location, type, and feedstock quality impose logistical and storage challenges. Such a dispersion and variety of biomass sources, as well as the dispersion of demand points, may undermine the economies of scale and increase the risk of supply shortage. By consolidating biomass preprocessing and distribution activities in bio-hub facilities, they can contribute to the overall resilience of biomass supply chains (BSCs) and ensure a more sustainable and cost-efficient approach to bioenergy production. As such, investigating the advantages and challenges associated with bio-hub implementation can offer invaluable insights on the efficiency and sustainability of BSCs. Despite its critical role, a major part of the literature on BSCs is confined to the decision-making processes related to biomass suppliers and bioconversion facilities. To bridge this research gap, the current study conducts a systematic literature review on bio-hub implementation within BSCs in the period of the last ten years. Shortlisted papers are classified and analyzed meticulously to extract possible improvements from BSC and modeling perspectives. From the BSC viewpoint, one notable gap is the little attention to mid-term and short-term decisions of bio-hub operations such as inventory control, resource management and production planning. Furthermore, the results revealed that environmental and social aspects of bio-hub implementation require considerable attention. From the modeling perspective, findings illustrate the underutilization of integrated approaches to incorporate micro-level and macro-level information in decision-making. With the Danish government's goals of decreasing 70% of CO 2 emissions by 2030 and reaching a fully decarbonised society in the years after, this paper aims to identify the role of sustainable bioenergy in achieving this goal. The methodology and approach presented are relevant for other countries heading in the same direction. The focus is on strategies to further develop the sustainable biomass resources and conversion technologies within energy and transport paired with CCUS (carbon capture utilisation and storage) to coordinate with other sectors and achieve a fully decarbonised society. By using hourly energy system modelling and a Smart Energy Systems approach, it is possible to create a robust multiple technology strategy and keep the sustainable bioenergy levels. Woody biomass energy makes up a large share of renewable energy consumption in the EU, and the largest share in countries like Denmark. However, little is known about how the public perceive it. This paper presents the results of a questionnaire-based survey of the public in Denmark focusing on attitudes toward woody biomass for energy. The main findings are that, while more people favor than oppose it, a large proportion are undecided about the use of woody biomass. The survey also revealed a lack of knowledge about this energy source. A Best-Worst Scaling methodology revealed that Danes prioritize environmental sustainability concerns – namely biodiversity loss, the hindering of the development of other renewable energy sources and the climate change mitigation potential of woody biomass – over societal and/or economic ones when it comes to the promotion of woody biomass. Finally, it was found that concern about climate change, belief in the mitigation potential of woody biomass, and being younger explained the formation of positive attitudes toward woody biomass. Policy makers aiming to take public concerns into account in discussions about Denmark's energy future should focus more on minimizing the negative environmental impacts associated with woody biomass rather than on its economic benefits. In order to implement bioeconomy strategy and seek climate change mitigation, the enhancement of bioenergy production and consumption is required. Looking at a bottom-up approach in which a society can choose its renewable energy supplier, it is important to analyze what mechanisms contribute to the willingness to use bioenergy. In this paper, the Lithuania case, when the citizenry got a chance to choose an independent energy supplier, was considered. Applying the structural equation modelling the impact of financial, social and informational mechanisms, knowledge about bioeconomy and about the benefit on the environment and the willingness to use bioenergy was evaluated. The results showed that the financial mechanism and knowledge about bioenergy and the benefit on the environment influenced the willingness to use bioenergy the most. Information mechanism also influenced this intention. Meanwhile, social mechanism had no effect both on knowledge level and intention to use bioenergy. Therefore, this study could contribute to the formation of bioeconomy policy and the enhancement of bioenergy usage in the household sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The present work investigates solid biofuel, derived from household food waste (food residue biofuel, FRB) as a potential bioenergy source in cement manufacturing. Up-to-date investigations of household food waste as a solid fuel focused on composition and heating value, yet no results are available regarding impact on plant efficiency and emissions upon utilization. A multidimensional model based on fundamental principles (mass and enthalpy balances) is used together with actual data from fossil fuel operation to identify and quantitatively asses the impacts on plant performance, product quality and atmospheric emissions. Τhe energy needed to prepare low moisture FRBs is determined and suitable processes are singled out. Key issues of cement plant operation are identified and quantitatively assessed via simulation in an actual dry-process plant, when FRBs substitute 20% of thermal energy (provided by petcoke). The facility utilizes 1.65 × 105 tpa of fossil fuels to produce 1.5 × 106 tpa clinker. It is found that energy efficiency falls and clinker production diminishes by about 0.5 t clinker/t FRB. Refractory thermal rating and main blower capacity constraints remain satisfied. Non-biogenic green-house-gas emissions are reduced by ~60 kg/t clinker. Emitted concentrations slightly increase for several pollutants, mainly nitrogen oxides (NO x) hydrogen chloride (HCl) and metals; they decrease for sulphur dioxide (SO 2) and particulates. Maximum emission limits are observed for all regulated pollutants but NO x. Incombustible chlorine and inclusions of alkalis in cement increase by ~9%. To reap the bioenergy benefits and mitigate impacts, blends of FRB (~80%wt) with paper residues (~20%wt) are investigated. Conforming to plant operational constraints and product specifications, the blends ensure production level, environmental compliance and reduced emission rates. The results direct towards customer-tailored FRB blends with lignocellulosic residues, that best suit the design, specific quarry raw materials, operating conditions and individual parameters of the cement plant towards more sustainable cement manufacturing. Abstract Greater production of agricultural biomass for energy generation means a greater overlap between the energy and agricultural value chains. The production of biofuels from food crops was previously criticised as conflicting with food production. Use of so-called 'marginal land' is proposed to overcome previous controversies. Using interviews and document analysis, this paper explores the meaning of 'marginal land' for non-food energy crop production in Denmark and conflicts that arose over its proposed use. In Denmark there was a different conception of marginal land – environmentally sensitive land where intensive cultivation causes impacts. Policies were put in place to promote the use of this 'environmentally marginal land'. However, competing environmental objectives for this land – for different types of biodiversity, ecosystems services and aesthetic preferences meant these policies were repealed. The paper shows how discussions of biomass production on agricultural land, and particularly marginal land, reflect the nuances of competing land uses in agriculturally intensive countries like Denmark. It is not only a matter of trade-offs between different types of agricultural production, such as food and fuel, or between environmental benefits and production, but over the optimal environmental use of the land to achieve multifunctional benefits. As well as questions of equity, access and practicality, the marginal land debate in agriculturally intensive countries needs to include questions of appropriate and desired environmental outcomes and means of stakeholder engagement to establish these. Abstract In this paper we identify a concept of countries' biomass-related sustainability through a revision of the literature and the opinion of professionals, and identify the main reasons that prevent biomass from being a major source of energy production (adversities and constraints). The Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) methodology was used for establishing the causal and hierarchical relationships among the variables linked with the adversities and constraints associated with the production of biofuel from biomass and their impact on countries' biomass-related sustainability. At the base of the concept of biomass related countries' sustainability we identify an important constraint associated with the high energy production costs, but also the necessity of supporting new investments, which will drive technological innovations in this sector and allow for an increase in efficiency. The paper presents an innovative approach to the research of biofuel production from biomass by suggesting not only a concept of countries' biomass-related sustainability but also by exploring causal and hierarchical relationships between adversities/constraints of biofuel production and impact on countries' sustainability. Abstract Bio-economy can be defined as an economy where renewable biomasses are produced and converted into value-added materials, chemicals, foods, feeds, fuels and energy: therefore, it represents one valid, reliable way to transition to equitable, sustainable, post fossil-carbon societies. For this reason, it is increasingly gaining attention by scientists and academics worldwide, as is supported by this special issue developed within the Journal of Cleaner Production and presented in this editorial article. This Virtual Special Issue (VSI) was designed to highlight the importance of academic research in documenting the multiple greening effects that bio-economy has in multiple societal sectors. Therefore, the editors are confident that it will help to create the platform to exchange and to enhance knowledge on the evolving bio-economy. In this context, this editorial was designed to provide an overview of the papers contained in this special issue and to highlight their contributions to the bio-economy within five main research themes: biomass, biomaterials and bioenergy; agriculture; forestry; production and packaging of foods and feeds; and miscellaneous applications. Based upon the analysis of this VSI's papers, the authors found that there is an urgent need for research on: meta-studies of cross-country/regional interventions, to assess which interventions are more effective; more effective harmonisation solutions of methodological approaches for bio-economy assessments; and finally more interdisciplinary collaboration among technical and social scientists to identify and address the relevant questions for the bio-economy and to exchange and involve academics with all actors of the "innovation pipeline" of the bio-economy. This paper explores social acceptance of different wood-based energy applications in the Great Lakes region in the Upper Midwest, USA. Specifically, the paper examines attitudes and perceptions towards residential wood burning, commercial-scale wood boilers for heat, combined heat and power (CHP) facilities, and industrial power generation in Michigan. In 2021, we conducted a state-wide survey (n = 207) and 30 semi-structured interviews with individuals representing different stakeholder perspectives, including regulatory agencies, biomass industry leaders, non-governmental organizations and scientists who have shaped biomass debates, forest products workers, and Michigan residents. Results suggest that the depth of an individual's knowledge about different types of wood energy applications generally led to more positive attitudes, particularly for smaller-scale uses of wood for heat. Despite perceived environmental, economic, and human health risks of using wood for different energy applications, across all stakeholder groups, 70% of respondents perceived environmental benefits, 61% perceived economic benefits, and 57% perceived health benefits. Changing economic and environmental conditions in different parts of the state contributed to people's attitudes toward different forms of wood energy and their perceptions of associated risks and benefits. The biological transformation of industrial value creation aims to provide solutions with regard to the ecological challenges of our time. Concerning climate change, the most critical transformation area is the energy sector. Alternatives to fossil energy supply as well as the active removal of carbon dioxide (CO 2) from the atmosphere are considered the most important challenges that technology must provide solutions for. A promising approach in this context is the carbon-negative hydrogen production from biogenic sources (HyBECCS). This approach can be implemented on the basis of existing biogas plants. Technology alternatives for retrofitting these plants to HyBECCS facilities are elaborated and their respective strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats are derived in this paper. Further, taking the example of Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany, the ecologic potentials concerning hydrogen (H 2) production and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction are estimated. The current total H 2 demand of 1.8 TWh/a in this area could be fully covered if 1/7 to 1/4 of existing biogas plants were retrofitted for H 2 production. The substitution of gray H 2 can avoid GHG emissions of 2.2-3.7 million t CO 2 per year. In addition, capture and storage or long-term use of the resulting biogenic CO 2 can enable negative emissions of 2.5-6 million t CO 2 per year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2016 was an extraordinary year for renewable energy, as it had the largest global capacity additions seen to date. However, challenges remain, particularly beyond the power sector. Overcoming these challenges means pursuing goals on development and optimization of strategies focused in causing an increase in bioenergy usage. Considering the seriousness of the challenge this paper has been developed. In the present study, indigenous microorganisms gathered from municipal solid waste will be analysed at to find out the role such organisms have on an anaerobic digester and its performance, with the aim of producing biogas in order for it to be used as electricity or treated to produce high quality fuel. The presence of such anaerobic microbiota can help avoid the two most tragic situations of an anaerobic digestion plant: overloading and washing out. The information of the present paper would have to be considered in future researchers about pre-treatments because most novelty studies are focused on hard pre-treatment to destroy microorganisms in the substrate (to increase the biogas production). Attached microalgae cultivation for the algae-based products is considered as a promising approach to simplify biomass recovery processes and reduce the cost. However, as an incipient research field, biomass accumulation is the mainly index for attached microalgal growth evaluation. To break through such limitations, physiological properties of attached microalgae (e.g. the oxygen evolving activity and the main organic composition of cells), which are important for microalgal growth evaluation but are still unclear in most studies, were studied using an attached microalgae culture system, i.e. suspended-solid phase photobioreactor (ssPBR) in this paper. As light, nutrients and other environmental conditions of attached microalgae were different from the suspended microalgae, physiological properties of attached microalgae also varied from the suspended ones. Besides the relatively lower biomass accumulation rate, attached microalgae also had a lower oxygen evolving activity (65% on average) comparing to suspended microalgae. The composition of microalgae changed towards accumulating more protein when suspended microalgae turned to attached status. The relative protein content of attached microalgae (50.1% ± 10.1%) was approximately 30% higher than the suspended algae (36.0% ± 16.1%) on average. The discovery of physiological properties of attached microalgae in this paper could help the production of high-protein microalgae-related products and explain some phenomenon during the production of microalgae-related products. This paper presents the editorial for the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews joint special issue devoted to the research work discussed and presented at the 11th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES), held from the 4th September to the 9th September 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal and the 2nd South East European (SEE) SDEWES Conference held from June 15th to June 18th, 2016 in Piran, Slovenia. This special issue is in line with the journal's aim of publishing research from across the ever-broadening field of renewable and sustainable energy with a strong review element. Previous SDEWES conference special issues have gathered a significant knowledge base in the field of sustainable development that reflects the continuous research efforts of the SDEWES research community. Therefore, this editorial provides not only an overview of the papers published in this particular special issue, but also a wider overview of the current trends in the domain of sustainable and renewable energy. This year's special issue focuses particularly on the benefits of the bio-based economy, energy security issues, fossil fuel thermal plant alternatives and environmental constraints, district heating and cooling together with cross sector energy efficiency and energy conservation issues. Sustainable transport systems, the issue of fuel poverty in urban neighbourhoods and renewable energy to support development of peripheral rural areas, optimising passive building design for hot climates and solar-powered heating and cooling are further topics featured in this special issue. In the process of selecting papers for this special issue, the guest editors invited in total 23 extended manuscripts for consideration for publication. This review covers 30 years on cardoon ( Cynara cardunculus L.); a perennial plant adapted to the Mediterranean climate conditions of low rainfall and hot dry summers. Its potential as a non-food agricultural crop for set-aside lands and the excellent biomass production created an enthusiastic research interest in this plant and its uses. The review starts with the plant morphology, ecology and development, followed by the agricultural aspects related to crop establishment and harvest, giving the available data on the production yields by biomass component, from small research plots to large-scale plantations. The biomass components are characterized regarding anatomical, chemical and physical properties in view of their use as feedstock for the different applications. The use of Cynara biomass for energy was assessed according to its fuel properties and performance under the various processes e.g. combustion, gasification and pyrolysis. Cynara seeds contain a linoleic acid rich oil that may be processed into a biodiesel with properties similar to commercial diesel. The production of biomethane and of ethanol were also studied with promising results. Cynara was tested as a fibre source for production of pulp and paper using different delignification processes (kraft, soda, ASAM and organosolvs) with good pulp yields and adequate physical and mechanical properties. More recently, the phytochemical and pharmacological activities of different compounds extracted from Cynara biomass are also being investigated. This plant is a good candidate to be grown in the dry lands of the Mediterranean region as a perennial field crop for multi-purposes and non-conventional uses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a new conceptual design tool for bioenergy systems, the 2MBio, and its implementation on the case of wood fuel energy systems (WES) in South Mozambique. Dependence on wood fuel characterises most Sub-Saharan countries and WES are complex socio-ecological systems dynamically linked to crucial development issues, e.g., deforestation and poverty. In Mozambique WES supply over 70% of the national energy needs through an informal business network worth around one million euros each year. In contrast with the 2MBio, currently available tools often aim at supporting decision-making on WES with off-the-shelf expert solutions and optimisation of WES efficiency, supply chains and resource management. While relevant and useful, such approaches are frequently unsuitable to engage the knowledge and creativity of a wide range of crucial actors. The 2MBio addresses this gap providing a simple, visual platform on paper that supports from illiterate to professional users, to stimulate creative ideas and apply current knowledge while designing their own WES. The results of implementation in real settings in South Mozambique produced relevant design breakthroughs. Compared with the absence of any other support tool, and faced with same design challenges, the 2MBio participatory design workshops in south Mozambique resulted in comprehensive analysis of wood fuel energy systems, and innovative integrated WES solutions design. The proposed approach raised participants’ awareness about opportunities and constrains linked to their WES while also facilitating information sharing new learning dynamics and enhance creativity. Countries are considering different options to achieve net zero emissions including Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), which is the process of capturing and storing CO 2 from processes that use bioenergy to produce heat, electricity, or biofuels. However, this technology faces sustainability concerns and possesses complex value chains of its emissions. Adding further to this complexity, the literature indicates two opposing views with respect to the potential of BECCS in terms of being able (or unable) to achieve negative emissions. Hence, this paper analyzes in detail a wide range of BECCS pathways in terms of their ability to achieve negative emissions along with their associated costs. Out of seven assessed pathways, our analysis shows that corn to ethanol and biomethane production from maize BECCS pathway in the USA, biomethane production from wet manure in Europe, and baling of straw pellets with trans-Atlantic shipment can achieve negative emissions at a cost of 50, 108, 159, and 232 dollars per ton of CO 2 ($/tCO 2) respectively. Sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) has been regarded as a promising device for simultaneously bioenergy supply and bioremediation, but the low power density and less research on bioremediation still hinders its practical application. As the carrier of exoelectrogens, anode is closely related to above characteristics of SMFC. Thus, the modification of anode is a reliable way to improve SMFC performance. In this paper, the graphite plate (GP) is modified with polypyrrole/Co 3 O 4 composite (PPy@Co 3 O 4) by electrodeposition to obtain a high capacitive and conductive electrode. SMFC equipped with PPy@Co 3 O 4 -GP shows maximum power density of 247.89 mW/m2, nearly 1.94 times higher than blank control group (127.61 mW/m2). The microflora analysis exhibits that PPy@Co 3 O 4 -GP has great screening ability for electroactive microbes, and forming electroactive functional microflora involved with Sulfurovum and Streptococcus. The results of sediment composition show that PPy@Co 3 O 4 -GP has good bioremediation potential. This paper explores the viability of utilizing agricultural biomass-based energy potential, employing mathematical, engineering, and economic modeling techniques. Moreover, the potential of a biogas-based co-digestion (CD) system, integrating its techno-economic performance and environmental sustainability in terms of electricity generation, has also been studied. In this investigation, the categorization of 25 different plant species into two groups: arable field crops (AFCs) and horticultural plants (HPs), was performed. Data was collected during the 2021‐–2022 cropping season in Bangladesh from various sources, including literature reviews, governmental, and non-governmental organizations. The findings revealed that the available agricultural biomass residues, totaling 1,02,585.75 KT, have the capacity to generate 1,33,815 million m3/year of biogas. This energy potential corresponds to 291,125.85 TJ/year or 9231.60 MW of electricity, which can fulfill 88% of the national total energy demand. In terms of levelized cost, the proposed approach is more competitive and shows a greater promise compared to other technologies. Furthermore, it demonstrates environmental friendliness by reducing CO 2 emissions by 156 tons at a cost of $7/ton while earning $1092 annually from the potential carbon-credit market. This approach presents a potential solution to address Bangladesh's energy crisis. The payback period of the system ranged from 2.93 to 3.75 years, with and without the inclusion of a slurry, respectively. The recommended methods hold significant promise for meeting national energy demands. A case study was provided as a proof-of-concept (PoC) to validate the approach. This study is the first of its kind, providing valuable insights into the renewable energy potential in Bangladesh. Torrefied biomass has considerable potential as a biomass fuel to replace coal in energy and process heat production. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the potential of torrefied biomass in different industries, both power and non-power generation industries, and considers the impact of such use on the international biomass market. The power generation sector has been so far the leader in testing torrefied biomass use with other industrial demand lagging behind. There are promising technical possibilities for greater torrefied biomass use in a number of other areas such as the steel, non-metallic minerals, as well as the pulp and paper industries. Although a large increase in torrefied biomass consumption by industry is not immediately foreseeable, industrial use by actors outside the energy generation sector could increase demand for torrefied biomass in general and, as a result, stimulate development of global torrefied biomass markets. Results show that the torrefied biomass demand significantly depends on the bioenergy markets. With the rising population in India the demand for energy is also shooting up. This paper examines the potential, scope and the opportunities of biomass in the Indian economy. India, being an agricultural country, has a lot of possible resources from the agronomic sector like crop residue, animal manure, etc., which has not been utilised in an efficient way. This paper also gives an insight into anaerobic digestion and the many other digesters implemented in India. The accelerating economic growth leads to the rapid rise in urbanisation which in turn generates an increased production of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). This MSW can be used in biomass production in quite a lot of innovative ways. The study also focused on the potential sources and their proper conversion technique. The feasibility of biomass conversion and achievements made by India was also looked into. This paper reviews methods that measure mineral resource depletion based on cumulative exergy consumption approaches. It focuses on the exergy replacement cost (ERC), which measures the amount of exergy society would have to consume in order to re-concentrate an extracted and processed mineral to the point that it can be once more exploited by future generations. The ERC, which was originally only suitable for non-fuel minerals, was adapted and extended in 2016, by changing the focus of the ERC from the chemical composition of the resource to its function, to include fossil fuel depletion. This paper discusses the impact of these new developments and identifies conceptual and methodological weaknesses that need to be addressed for the ERC to find widespread use in exergy analysis and in order to assess the sustainability of mineral policy from the grave to the cradle. As part of a transition to lower carbon energy systems, bioenergy development is often assumed to follow a uniform pathway. Yet the design, organization, and politics of bioenergy production in specific regional contexts may be contested. This study examines contestation within an emerging perennial crop bioenergy sector in the U.S. Northeast. Synthesizing conceptual contributions from the multi-level perspective on the significance of niches and sub-niches in sustainability transitions and from science and technology studies on the material and moral implications of sociotechnical imaginaries and object conflicts, this paper analyzes the politics of bioenergy sub-niche imaginaries. It identifies two main bioenergy sub-niches centered on (1) regional production and (2) community energy. Examining proposed and current production of perennial energy crops on marginal land, the study draws on 42 semi-structured interviews with bioenergy actors (e.g., scientists, industry representatives, policymakers, farmers/landowners) and secondary documents. The two bioenergy sub-niche imaginaries revealed political contestations around scale of operations, control and beneficiaries, and about definitions and uses of marginal land relative to livelihoods and community. This study highlights the potency of rival imaginaries within a developing sociotechnical niche and implications for sustainability transitions. Tracing the contours and emphases of, as well as conflicts between, bioenergy sub-niche imaginaries can clarify which pathways for transition to a lower carbon energy future could garner political and public support. The paper concludes by considering how disagreements between sub-niche actors could lead to productive mutual learning and the possibility of forging solutions contributing to more robust and equitable sustainability transitions. Bioenergy conversion technologies have been frequently described and analysed in the literature, but a comprehensive and detailed comparison between the complex individual characteristics of each technology is still lacking. Therefore, the paper contains a description of the technical, economic and environmental properties of each technology with a special focus on the German bioenergy sector. The study presents an analysis of different bioenergy applications with regard to their specifications, power/heat output range and their areas of application. Due to the fact, that biomass combustion applications are the most widespread and market proven renewable conversion technologies, a detailed analysis of decentralised, biomass-fired CHP plants is presented in the paper. The overview of the individual characteristics of different biomass conversion routes shows that biogas plants achieve high electrical efficiencies, are available with a broad range of capacities and belong to the established technologies. Although the investment costs of biogas plants are relatively high, biomass conversion with anaerobic digestion can be seen as one of the most promising option for a sustainable energy supply in Europe. Abstract: With increasing attention on energy shortage and global warming, bioenergy is a promising alternative energy to mitigate CO 2 emissions. Despite the environmental friendly potential, a certain quantity of bioenergy-related CO 2 is still emitted in China. This paper investigates the temporal dynamics of bioenergy-related CO 2 emissions in 2000–2010 in China, and explores the underlying influence factors based on logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI). Then the core results are verified with a GIS-based approach from a spacial perspective. The results show that four impact factors: emission intensity, energy structure, energy efficiency and economic development have different impacts on bioenergy-related CO 2 emissions, of which economic development is the major factor contributing to its increase, while energy efficiency is the major determinant for the decline. Per capita bioenergy-related CO 2 emissions in different areas are verified in accordance with either economic development factor or energy efficiency factor to some extent. To achieve the dual purpose of sustainable development and CO 2 emissions reduction, this paper provides a practical policy framework for rural bioenergy and economic development. This paper provides a critical review on the current status and potential of biomass utilization in ferrous metallurgical processes, i.e., the blast furnace (BF) – basic oxygen furnace (BOF) route, the direct reduction (DR) – electric arc furnace (EAF) route, the scrap – EAF route and the other routes. In the BF-BOF route, biomass can be used as a fuel for iron ore sintering, or as a raw material for the production of bio-coke, and utilized for blast furnace injection. In the DR-EAF route, direct reduction iron can be produced form iron ore and biomass pellet. In the scrap – EAF route, biomass can be utilized in EAF through a cogeneration system. In addition, biomass can be utilized in magnetic separation of refractory low-grade iron ore, in reuse of iron and steel slag, or as an adsorbent for pollutant control, etc. The challenges and outlook of biomass utilization in metallurgical industry are also discussed in this paper. Finland has the greatest forest cover of European countries and thus considerable raw material potential for wood pellet market development. Wood pellet production and consumption volumes in the country have increased steadily during the last decades. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the current status of the Finnish wood pellet business and discuss the main opportunities and challenges facing future development of the industry. The paper collects and revises data on the Finnish wood pellet market based on the results of a survey of nearly 60 wood pellet experts. The results show that neglect of policy support and a lack of suitable regulation are the key factors inhibiting Finnish wood pellet industry development. Currently, wood pellets are not economically competitive with other fuels. However, Finnish wood pellet markets seem promising if challenges such as high raw material costs and competitiveness with other fuels, especially for household users, are addressed. The country has the potential to become a more important producer and consumer on European wood pellet markets if effective policy support and a suitable regulatory framework are formulated. Optimal network design is a key factor in the enhancement of the economic, environmental, and social performance and efficiency of the biomass supply chain (BSC), and this is why it has become quite popular with the academia and practitioners. The great number of the related papers published in the scientific journals in recent years is the proof of the claim; therefore, to make a framework of the past works and specify the future directions, a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art papers deems necessary. The objective of this paper is to review the papers regarding the biomass supply chain network design (BSCND) models published in the scientific journals. A total number of 146 papers, published from Jan. 1997 to Jul. 2016 are reviewed, analyzed and classified based on their modeling approaches, decisions, uncertainties, solution methodologies, sustainability, model features, entities, data, and regions of the case studies. The European Union has set ambitious targets of raising the share of EU energy consumption produced from renewable resources from 20% by 2020 to 27% by 2030. The aim of this paper is to assess the role of woody biomass in renewable energy as gross final energy consumption in the European Union (the EU-28). The paper identifies leading and lagging countries in biomass development by focusing on their current biomass use and forecasts future perspectives. The research compares and evaluates the role of biomass in renewable energy in the EU-28 focusing on countries' potential resources and policy support. The study shows that all countries are making efforts to reach the 20% target in 2020 and exhibit a trend of increasing renewable energy as gross final energy consumption towards the new target of 2030. Solid biomass plays an important role in reaching the EU's renewable energy targets. The majority of the EU-28 countries are close to reaching their national renewable energy targets and show a very attractive biomass development. Unless energy consumption decreases however, some member states will face serious problems in reaching their renewable energy target in 2020. Following our analysis, the largest problems occur in those MS having a relative high-energy consumption pattern: France, Germany and the United Kingdom. It is unlikely that they can comply with expected renewable energy demand, unless they mobilize more woody biomass from their available domestic potential (France, Germany) or considerably increase their woody biomass imports (mostly wood pellets) from elsewhere (United Kingdom). The use of cover crops (CCs) during winter can improve the structure and water retention capacity of the soil. Additionally, the harvested CCs could be used as substrate in an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant. This paper aims at assessing the environmental and economic consequences of planting rye as a winter CC (after maize) and its use as co-substrate in an AD plant ( Rye scenario) instead of leaving the land fallow during winter and use solely maize for co-digestion with manure ( NoRye scenario). The life cycle assessment (LCA) of 1 MJ of produced bioenergy (36% electricity and 64% heat) shows significant benefits for marine eutrophication for the Rye scenario due to reductions in nitrate leaching. However, the lower specific yield of rye and the biogas potential for the Rye scenario resulted in higher total impacts on climate change and resource depletion (higher use of machinery and infrastructures for 1 MJ of produced bioenergy), as compared to the use of maize in the NoRye scenario. Based on the analysis, possible methodological improvements are highlighted, in particular for the simulation of field emissions and regionalization of impacts. From an economic point-of-view, planting rye during winter could generate additional revenues for the farmer. However, the calculation incorporates large uncertainties, linked mainly to price volatility, seasonal weather conditions (and related yield variations), and to the possible influence of CCs on the summer crop yield.
