Data centers are estimated to have the fastest growing carbon footprint from across the whole information and communication technology (ICT) sector. Evaluating the performance of data centers in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability is becoming an increasingly important matter for organizations and governments (e.g., for regulation or reputation purposes). It nonetheless remains difficult to achieve such evaluation, as data centers imply to take into consideration a wide range of dimensions and stakeholders. Even though a wide range of sustainability performance indicators exist in the literature, there is still a lack of frameworks to help data center stakeholders (spanning from data center owners, governmental regulators to engineers/field operators) to evaluate and understand how a data center performs in terms of sustainable development/behavior. Our research work proposes such a framework, whose originality lies in the combination of state-of-the-art sustainability metrics with the biomimicry commandments of eco-mature system, which enables holistic sustainability assessment of data centres. From a theoretical perspective, the proposed model is designed based on a benefit-cost analysis using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique. This approach allows data center stakeholders for specifying their own preferences and/or expertise in the comparison process, whose practicability is demonstrated in this paper considering three data center candidates, which are respectively located in France, Germany and Sweden. • A new model for comparing data center sustainability performance is proposed. • The model makes use of state-of-the-art sustainability metrics together with biomimicry lessons. • The model is designed based on a benefit-cost approach using the AHP technique. • A comparison study is carried out with three distinct data center candidates. The increasingly efficient use of scarce resources is a central theme in the gradual transition towards a circular economy. Hazardous materials represent a category of resources that is often difficult—and potentially risky—to transport, store, or neutralize. As a result, hazardous materials are rarely included in closed material loops. The present paper analyzes HorsePower, a business concept centered around an innovative way of utilizing horse manure. Horse manure is generated in millions of tons in horse-rich countries such as the UK, Germany, and France. It is a hazardous resource, as it may spread diseases, and cannot be disposed of or landfilled economically. The content analysis of 21 semi-structured interviews carried out with different business actors participating in the HorsePower business network reveals that the success of HorsePower stems from its ability to combine the complementary capabilities and material needs of a relatively complex network of business actors including stables, sawmills, logistical service providers, and heat and power plants. Each actor receives added value; the benefits from participation are greater than the sacrifices of participation. Furthermore, the findings show that certain types of hazardous resources, when combined with resources produced by another actor, may be burned efficiently and safely in specific power plants, reducing the need for other types of fuel. The observations imply that novel approaches for effectively sharing ideas and resource needs across organizational boundaries are needed to facilitate the development of additional innovative CE business concepts, leveraging both actor-specific capabilities and intra-actor resource dependencies. Abstract: This paper studies the relations between bilateral FDIs and immigrant networks of France, Germany, UK, Italy and Spain, and the emigrant diasporas of Italy and Spain. It focuses on skilled and unskilled immigrants and on ties with developing and developed countries. Results evidence two different network models: FDIs of UK, Germany and France are prompted by the ties of skilled immigrants, while those of Italy and Spain are only influenced by their respective diasporas. The disparity may stem from history. Differently from the findings of previous literature, the effects of networks with developing countries are similar to those with rich economies. Abstract: The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) modular stellarator is under construction at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany. The W7-X magnet system contains 70 superconducting (sc) coils which are supported by a massive central steel ring structure via bolted connections and by numerous welded as well as gliding inter-coil elements. Load tests on prototypes of bolted coil to support ring connections whose flanges partially open during high field operation, and of sliding support structures between the coils showed that stick–slip events at their contact surfaces cause shock waves. In order to assess the risk of a shock-induced quench of the superconductor, one of the coils was subjected to impact loads – the so-called mechanical quench (MQ) test – in the course of the cryogenic acceptance tests at CEA in Saclay, France. No quench could be triggered even with the lowest coil stability margin. The paper demonstrates that the amplitudes of the shock waves in the W7-X magnet system are comparable to those generated by the impacts in the MQ tests. For that purpose, finite element (FE) models of both W7-X and the MQ test simulating the dynamic responses were developed and successfully validated against measurements. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Space systems today provide growing benefits to enhance the quality of humankind. However, as a by-product, the orbiting objects inevitably leaves some debris which after 50years of space activities represent a concern for all space agencies and manufacturers and operators. Since last year no international agreement was in place to mitigate the growing population of space debris objects. The successful result obtained at UN-COPUOS in 2007 and available in the OOSA web site, now gives to the public, a set of voluntary international guidelines that could, if adopted by each space fairing Country, help in maintaining the present space environment. More further steps are necessary in the future to define a legal and normative framework. The paper will present the seven established UN Space Debris guidelines as well as examples of the minimum steps to be carried out at national level to enable the UN-COPUOS to start the discussion of the legal aspect associated with the space debris issue. Abstract: The paper summarises damage tolerance investigations on railway rails which the authors have carried out in the context of the German–French joint project NOVUM (novel methods for quantitative prediction of rail performance at increased service loads) [Girardi L, Heyder R, Dider L, Boulanger D. IDR2-NOVUM promises lower rail maintenance costs. Railway Gazette Int 2005;(July):439–41]. The investigations include the determination of the crack driving force as a function of the various loading components a rail is subjected to and the simulation of residual lifetime. Abstract: The wind tunnel test of HART II (Higher Harmonic Control Aeroacoustic Rotor Test), performed in October 2001 in the Large Low-Speed Facility (LLF) of the German-Dutch Wind-tunnel (DNW), is part of an international cooperative program by the German DLR, French ONERA, DNW, NASA Langley and the US Army Aeroflightdynamics Directorate (AFDD). The main objective of the program is the investigation of rotor wake and its influence on rotor blade–vortex interaction (BVI) noise with and without higher harmonic pitch control (HHC). For blade position and deflection measurements the Stereo Pattern Recognition (SPR) technique was used for the first time. This technique is based on a 3-dimensional reconstruction of visible marker locations by using stereo camera images. An evaluation of these images leads to the spatial position of markers which are attached to each of the four blades and to the bottom of the fuselage and thus to the blade motion parameters in flap, lead-lag and torsion. In this paper the different analysis methods and post-processing of SPR data and the final results for all four rotor blades are presented and the advantages, drawbacks and the potential of this technology are shown. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview about the distribution of the environmental impacts arising from different domestic functions (i.e. storing and preparing food, washing dishes, watching television, reading, personal cleaning, washing, drying and ironing clothes, home cleaning, heating, cooling, lighting and mobility) typically performed within a common family home. The method has general validity but for reasons related to the availability of data in the literature it has been applied by way of example only in three EU countries: Italy, Germany and France. The study was performed by using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in accordance with international standard ISO 14067 for determining the carbon footprint of different alternative domestic components, mainly appliances, for each function, by exclusively exploiting data from scientific literature. The functional unit is defined comprising all most common referred domestic activities of a family of three members within a house of 100 m2. The study identified an optimal configuration and a worse one of the domestic components in terms of carbon footprint, showing how a wise choice of these can greatly affect the overall impact by reducing it compared to the worst by more than 22% in Italy, 45% in Germany and 56% in France. The average impacts between the optimal and the worst configurations of Germany are higher than Italy (+27%) and France (+44%). Considering the impacts among the domestic functions in the average configuration, mobility was the most impactful in all the three countries (35–48%), followed by heating (17–26%), personal cleaning (10–13%) and washing dishes (8–13%), while cooling is consistent only in Italy (13%), against 5% in Germany and 2% in France. The study also allowed to identify some generic criteria for defining the optimal configuration: the increasing in energy efficiency, the choice of the least impacting energy source depending on the geographical location, ensuring water savings and the early replacement of older domestic components. Finally, by comparing some common measures for improving the domestic sustainability, these criteria proved to be more effective than solar systems and improved electricity mix. The provided outcomes may be used by manufacturers for improving their product in a more sustainable way as well as by legislator and end user, respectively for boosting and choosing the greener domestic components. Binational genetic evaluation between Germany and France were performed for each type trait using a single-trait MACE (multiple across-country evaluation) model. Daughter yield deviations (DYD) of bulls having 30 equivalent daughter contributions or more were the data for parameter estimation. Full pedigree information of bulls was used via sire and dam relationships. In general, across-country genetic correlation estimates were in agreement with what is observed by Interbull. The estimated correlations were over 0.93 for stature, rump angle, udder depth, front teat placement, teat length and rear teat placement. These traits have been classified in both countries for a long period of time. However, some other type traits were included later in the French type classification system (most of them since 2000): chest width, body depth, angularity, rump width, rear leg rear view, fore udder and rear udder height. The estimated correlations for these traits were relatively low. In order to check changes in genetic correlations over time, data from bulls born until the end of 1995 were discarded. Higher genetic correlation estimates between both countries were obtained by using more recent data especially for traits having lower genetic correlation, e.g. body depth correlation increased from 0.55 to 0.83. Once genetic correlations were estimated, binational genetic evaluation between Germany and France were performed for each type trait using DYD of bulls. The rankings of bulls obtained from this evaluation had some differences with Interbull rankings but a similar proportion of bulls from each country was found. Finally, more computationally demanding binational evaluations were performed using yield deviations of cows for binational cow comparison.
