The article presents the emerging forest bioeconomy as an integrated, multi-product industrial ecosystem, where the traditional pulp mills allocate the use of side streams to independent biochemical companies manufacturing bioproducts in the vicinity of the pulp mills. Topics include the biochemical benefit from the proximity by receiving wood-based side streams at lower costs, and at the same time, and the pulp mills benefit from having a new source of revenue from selling side streams.

Industrial development within Canada's boreal zone has increased in recent decades. Forest management activities, pulp and paper operations, electric power generation, mining, conventional oil and gas extraction, nonconventional oil sand development, and peat mining occur throughout the boreal zone with varying impacts on water resources. We review impacts of these industries on surface water, groundwater, and wetlands recognizing that heterogeneity in the dominance of different hydrologic processes (i.e., precipitation, evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge, and runoff generation) across the boreal zone influences the degree of impacts on water resources. Through the application of best management practices, forest certification programs, and science-based guidelines, timber, pulp and paper, and peat industries have reduced their impacts on water resources, although uncertainties remain about long-term recovery following disturbance. Hydroelectric power developments have moved toward reducing reservoir size and creating more natural flow regimes, although impacts of aging infrastructure and dam decommissioning is largely unknown. Mineral and metal mining industries have improved regulation and practices, but the legacy of abandoned mines across the boreal zone still presents an ongoing risk to water resources. Oil and gas industries, including non-conventional resources such as oil sands, is one of the largest industrial users of water and, while significant progress has been made in reducing water use, more work is needed to ensure the protection of water resources. All industries contribute to atmospheric deposition of pollutants that may eventually be released to downstream waters. Although most industrial sectors strive to improve their environmental performance with regards to water resources, disruptions to natural flow regimes and risks of degraded water quality exist at local to regional scales in the boreal zone. Addressing the emerging challenge of managing the expanding, intensifying, and cumulative effects of industries in conjunction with other stressors, such as climate change and atmospheric pollution, across the landscape will aid in preserving Canada's rich endowment of water resources. In the Coast Mountains of western British Columbia, an anomalous seismicity concentration exists near the intersection of the Coast Shear Zone, a major northwest–southeast trending Eocene-age shear zone that accommodated deformation between the Pacific and North America plates, with the Anahim Volcanic Belt, an east-northeast–west-northwest trending zone of volcanic features that decrease in age to the east. To better characterize seismicity in the Coast Mountains, we augment the existing Natural Resources Canada seismicity catalogue by applying an automatic detection and location algorithm to both permanent Canadian National Seismic Network stations and temporary stations from the 2005–2006 BATHOLITHS deployment, resulting in 837 relocated events with at least three paired P- and S-phase picks. Double-difference relocation reveals several small-scale linear strands subparallel to the Coast Shear Zone and within the Anahim Volcanic Belt and three clusters of events striking at a high angle to the Coast Shear Zone that occurred as swarms in 2015 and 2017. First-motion focal mechanisms exhibit extensional and strike-slip faulting. Our observations indicate that most of these events are not associated with surficial processes such as landslides, but rather, we hypothesize that the interaction of the Anahim Volcanic Belt and Coast Shear Zone has weakened the lithosphere in this region, leading to current-day strain localization and high heat flow that manifest seismicity, including swarm-like activity. This paper uses survey information to examine several common assertions about the institutional prerequisites for successful profitability when a First Nation enters an economic enterprise either independently or in joint effort with an outside firm. In the winter of 2004–2005, we interviewed managers on both the First Nations and private sides of joint ventures and other business alliances in Canada, to determine what affected their recent profitability experience. We gathered information on the ages, sizes, and activities of the firms. We also gathered information about the firms’ management structures and relationship with the First Nation, and the characteristics of the government of the First Nation. With a sample size of 40 firms that responded, we found that several institutional characteristics affected profit positively: strong separation of management from band governance, participation in management planning, and the use of staggered terms in band council elections. We found that the likelihood of profitability decreased if the band had been in third party management as well as if there was formal participation of elders or hereditary chiefs in decision making. We offer interpretations of these results. Cet article utilise les données d’un sondage réalisé au cours de l’hiver 2004–2005 afin d’examiner plusieurs assertions courantes au sujet des préalables institutionnels requis pour atteindre la profitabilité des entreprises initiées par des Premières nations agissant seules ou en partenariat avec des acteurs privés. Nous avons interviewé des gestionnaires impliqués dans de tels partenariats d’affaires au Canada et provenant tant des Premières nations que du secteur privé. Nous voulions déterminer ce qui affectait la profitabilité qu’ils avaient connue récemment. Nous avons rassemblé de l’information sur l’âge, la taille et les activités des entreprises. Nous avons aussi recueilli des données sur la structure de gestion des entreprises, les relations avec les Premières nations et les caractéristiques de la gouvernance en vigueur dans les communautés d’accueil. Un échantillon, regroupant les quarante entreprises qui ont répondu, nous permet d’observer que plusieurs caractéristiques institutionnelles, comme la séparation claire entre la gestion des projets et la gouvernance des communautés, la participation dans la planification managériale et le recours à des mandats échelonnés lors des élections au conseil de bande, affectent positivement les profits. Much of Canada's terrestrial biodiversity is supported by boreal forests. Natural resource development in boreal forests poses risks to this biodiversity. This paper reviews the scientific literature to assess the effects of natural resource development on terrestrial biodiversity in Canadian boreal forests. We address four questions: (1) To what extent have Canadian boreal forests changed due to natural resource development? (2) How has biodiversity responded to these changes? (3) Will the biodiversity of second-growth forests converge with that of primary boreal forests? (4) Are we losing species from boreal forests? We focus on trees, understory plants, insects, fungi, selected mammals, and songbirds because these groups have been most studied. We review more than 600 studies and found that changes in community composition are prevalent in response to large-scale conversion of forest types, changes in stand structures and age distributions, and altered landscape structure resulting from forest management and habitat loss associated with other developments such as oil and gas, hydroelectric, and mining. The southern boreal forest has been more highly impacted than the north due to more extensive forest management and the cumulative effects of multiple forms of development. There is abundant evidence that most species are not in danger of being extirpated from the boreal forest due to these anthropogenic changes. A few species, including woodland caribou ( Rangifer tarandus) and grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos), have, however, undergone long-term range contractions. Significant gaps in our ability to assess the effects of natural resource development on biodiversity in the boreal zone are the lack of long-term spatial and population data to monitor the impact of forest changes on ecosystems and species. These two ketals are synthetic propheromones, or pheromone precursors, of the whitemarked tussock moth (WMTM, Orgyia leucostigma (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae)), whose unstable female-produced sex pheromone component, (Z,Z)-6,9-heneicosadien-11-one.

Discusses the proceedings of an international conference entitled The Role of Boreal Forests and Forestry in the Global Carbon Budget was held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, from 8 to 12 May, 2000 to examine the present state of understanding of this subject, hosted by the Canadian Forest Service, the conference attracted nearly 300 scientists, forest managers, and policy advisors from around. Themes of the conference, including spectrum of research, broken into four themes, including boreal forest carbon budgets, monitoring and measuring boreal forest carbon fluxes and stocks, forestry practices for carbon management and social and economic issues, including implications of the Kyoto Protocol. Publications which capture the current scientific understanding of the contribution of boreal forests and forestry to the global carbon cycle, as presented at this conference, was captured in a series of publications.

A correction is presented to the article " A mechanistic understanding of hyperstability in catch per unit effort and density-dependent catchability in a multistock recreational fishery" which appeared in the previous issue.

Ecosystem-based fisheries management requires a fundamental understanding of ecosystem boundaries and interspecies interactions. We report a delineation of fish and invertebrate data collected by trawl survey along the Maine, USA, coast. Principal components analysis (PCA) reduced the multidimensionality of the data and created new variables from correlations among species. Bootstrapped PCA was employed to assess PCA structure using eigenvalue variation and species associations using eigenvector variation. A general linear model related structure of fish community identified in PCA to depth, temperature, longitude, and interactions among these variables. Generally, alongshore and onshore–offshore assemblage patterns related to oceanographic gradients, with seasonal variation. PCA-created variables act as indicators of biodiversity and are related to the scale of observation, allowing for multiple scales to be integrated if data are available. Species targeted and gear used along with spatial extent and sampling density must be considered when management zonation is to be undertaken but would allow boundaries to follow biological and physical gradients rather than relying on the typical political and economic variables, avoiding ecologically deleterious spatial patterns in fishing pressure or other instances of de facto zoning. Regardless, this study describes some contributing factors causing division of species assemblages that should be considered. La gestion des pêches basée sur les écosystèmes nécessite une compréhension fondamentale des frontières entre les écosystèmes et des interactions entre les espèces. Nous présentons une délimitation des données sur les poissons et les invertébrés récoltées par inventaire au chalut le long de la côte du Maine, .-U. Une analyse des composantes principales (PCA) a réduit la nature multidimensionnelle des données et a créé de nouvelles variables à partir des corrélations entre les espèces. Une PCA avec bootstrap a servi à estimer la structure de la PCA, ainsi que les associations d’espèces, d’après la variation des valeurs propres. Reliably estimating carbon storage and cycling in detrital biomass is an obstacle to carbon accounting. We examined carbon pools and fluxes in three small temperate forest landscapes to assess the magnitude of carbon stored in detrital biomass and determine whether detrital carbon storage is related to stand structural properties (leaf area, aboveground biomass, primary production) that can be estimated by remote sensing. We characterized these relationships with and without forest age as an additional predictive variable. Results depended on forest type. Carbon in dead woody debris was substantial at all sites, accounting for ~17% of aboveground carbon, whereas carbon in forest floor was substantial in the subalpine Rocky Mountains (36% of aboveground carbon) and less important in northern hardwoods of New England and mixed forests of the upper Midwest (~7%). Relationships to aboveground characteristics accounted for between 38% and 59% of the variability in carbon stored in forest floor and between 21% and 71% of the variability in carbon stored in dead woody material, indicating substantial differences among sites. Relating dead woody debris or forest floor carbon to other aboveground characteristics and (or) stand age may, in some forest types, provide a partial solution to the challenge of assessing fine-scale variability. La capacité d’estimer de façon fiable le stockage et le recyclage du carbone dans la biomasse détritique constitue un obstacle à l’établissement du bilan du carbone. Nous avons étudié les réservoirs et les flux de carbone dans trois paysages réduits de forêt tempérée pour évaluer l’ampleur du carbone emmagasiné dans la biomasse détritique et nous avons déterminé si le stockage du carbone dans les débris est relié aux propriétés structurales du peuplement (surface foliaire, biomasse aérienne, production primaire) qui peuvent être estimées au moyen de la télédétection. Nous avons caractérisé ces relations en incluant ou non l’âge de la forêt comme variable indépendante supplémentaire. Les résultats dépendaient du type de forêt. Dans toutes les stations, les débris ligneux contenaient une quantité appréciable de carbone qui représentait ~17 % du carbone aérien, tandis que la quantité de carbone dans la couverture morte était substantielle dans la zone subalpine des montagnes Rocheuses (36 % du carbone aérien) et moins importante dans les forêts de feuillus nordiques de la Nouvelle-Angleterre et dans les forêts mélangées de la partie nord du Midwest (~7 %). Les relations avec les caractéristiques aériennes expliquaient entre 38 et 59 % de la variation dans la quantité de carbone emmagasiné dans la couverture morte et entre 21 et 71 % de la variation dans la quantité de carbone emmagasiné dans les débris ligneux, indiquant qu’il y avait d’importantes différences entre les stations.
