The diet of juvenile and adult female California sea lions (Zalophus californianus (Lesson, 1828)) at San Miguel Island, California, was estimated and compared using fecal and stable isotope analyses to determine dietary differences by age. Fecal samples were collected during 2002-2006 and prey remains were identified. Stable carbon (δ13C) and stable nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values were determined from plasma and fur obtained from yearlings, 2- to 3-year-old juveniles, and adult females during 2005 and 2006. Juveniles ate more than 15 prey taxa, whereas adult females consumed more than 33 taxa. Relative importance of prey was determined using percent frequency of occurrence (%FO). Engraulis mordax Girard, 1854, Sardinops sagax (Jenyns, 1842), Merluccius productus (Ayres, 1855), genus Sebastes Cuvier, 1829, and Loligo opalescens Berry, 1911 were the most frequently occurring (%FO > 10%) prey in the feces of both juvenile and adult female sea lions, although their importance varied between age groups. Only yearlings had significantly different isotopic values than older conspecifics, indicating that older juveniles were feeding at a similar trophic level and in similar habitats as adult females. Whereas each method had biases, combining the two provided a better understanding of the diet of California sea lions and intraspecific differences. Recent changes to the ecology of the northwest Atlantic are affecting feeding relationships at many trophic levels. With declining fish stocks and fewer fisheries discards, generalist birds such as Great Black-backed Gulls (Larus marinus L., 1758) may shift their diets. To test whether such a change has occurred, we measured stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios of flight feathers collected from modern and museum-preserved birds (1896-2006). We then compared trends in isotope ratios with trends in regional fisheries productivity to determine if gull diets and fisheries changes were associated. We found a significant decline in stable nitrogen isotope ratios of feathers over time, indicating that the gulls' trophic feeding level has decreased by approximately 2.26‰, or 0.82 trophic units. In contrast, we found no significant change in carbon isotope ratios, giving no clear evidence for a shift to more offshore or terrestrial foraging. The declining stable nitrogen ratio was significantly and positively correlated with both regional groundfish captures and regional fisheries trophic level, and was negatively correlated with each of (i) crab captures and (ii) herring, sardine, and anchovy captures. Our study gives evidence for a shift in diets of Great Black-backed Gulls over time and further suggests that these changes may be related to ongoing changes in fisheries. Understanding habitat use of declining species is essential for their management and successful recovery. We examined habitat selection at multiple spatial scales by Northern Map Turtles (Graptemys geographica (Le Sueur, 1817)), a species at risk, in the St. Lawrence Islands National Park, Ontario, Canada. At the scale of the home range, Map Turtles generally avoided deep water (>2 m) and selected home ranges in waters <1 m deep. Importantly, turtles used home ranges with significantly more natural than developed shoreline. At the scale of the location, adult females used deep water more often and males preferred areas with surface cover. Management efforts should implement regulations concerning further shoreline development. La gestion et la récupération réussie des espèces en déclin nécessitent une compréhension de leur utilisation de l'habitat. Nous examinons la sélection de l'habitat à plusieurs échelles spatiales chez la tortue géographique (Graptemys geographica (Le Sueur, 1817)), une espèce vulnérable, dans le parc national des Îles-du-Saint-Laurent, Ontario, Canada. À l'échelle du domaine vital, les tortues géographiques évitent généralement les eaux profondes (>2 m) et choisissent des domaines vitaux dans des eaux de <1 m de profondeur. We conducted a 5 year demographic study in one population of the viviparous lizard Sceloporus grammicus Wiegmann, 1828 in central México. The population was structured in three size classes (juveniles, small adults, and asymptotic adults) for which we estimated annual survival and fecundity rates. A population projection matrix was constructed for each annual transition. All of them resulted in finite rates of population growth (λ) that, although variable from year to year (from 0.808 to 1.065), were not significantly different than unity, indicating population stability. Elasticity analysis revealed that survival staying in the same size class was the demographic process that made the greatest contribution to λ values in most years. Similarly, the stasis of large adults was the vital rate with the highest relative importance for population persistence. To incorporate the observed yearly variation in long-term population projections, we used a mean matrix, a stochastic simulation, and a resampling procedure. All these resulted in long-term population growth rates that were not significantly different than unity. Our results indicate overall demographic stability for the studied population of S. grammicus. La population est structurée en trois classes de taille (jeunes, petits adultes, adultes de taille asymptotique) pour lesquelles nous avons estimé les taux annuels de survie et de fécondité. Nous avons construit une matrice démographique de projection pour chaque transition annuelle. Toutes les matrices donnent des taux réels de croissance de la population (λ) qui, bien que variables d’une année à l’autre (de 0,808 à 1,065), ne diffèrent pas significativement de 1, ce qui indique une population stable. Une analyse d’élasticité montre que la survie des individus qui restent dans la même classe de taille est le processus démographique qui contribue le plus aux valeurs de λ la plupart des années. We assessed habitat preference of a lynx (Lynx canadensis) population through 8 years of a snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) cycle. Seventy-four percent of our southern Yukon study area was approximately 30-year-old regenerating forest resulting from a large wildfire. The study area was not trapped and lynx density was very high compared with other populations in North America. Contrary to our prediction, there was no discemable shift in habitat preference through the hare cycle; however, our habitat types were coarsely mapped and our radiolocations relatively inaccurate. Lynx may have altered their habitat preferences at finer scales (for patches <2 ha). Lynx showed strong preference for regenerating habitats over mature white spruce (Picea glauca) and alpine-subalpine. Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) dominated regenerating stands were preferred over spruce-willow (Salix spp.) stands of equal age. Riparian willow stands were also preferred over mature spruce forest and alpine. Lynx used riparian willow stands more in winter, but we detected no other shifts in habitat preference between snow-free and winter periods. We did not detect any difference in habitat preference between sexes. Independent juveniles made greater use of mature forest and perhaps riparian willow than adults, but no other difference in preference between the two age groups was noted. Lynx preference for regenerating habitat over mature forest suggests that bums will benefit lynx, especially if the regenerating community is pine dominated. Logging will only likely provide similar benefits if a dense pine understory results, which is unlikely in intensively managed stands. Although competitive interactions within predator populations are known to depend on their size structure, we understand less about how these interactions are influenced by prey characteristics. Most studies of such interactions for tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum) larvae have used small zooplankton prey. We investigate the potential of exploitation and interference competition to influence the success of tiger salamander larvae feeding on relatively large prey, mayfly and damselfly larvae. We measured salamander foraging efficiency for a range of salamander and prey sizes and observed aggression levels of salamanders of varying size housed together. Exploitative foraging efficiency (captures per attempts) increased with salamander size but was better predicted by relative prey size (prey size as a percentage of salamander snout-vent length) than by salamander size alone; it also depended significantly on prey type. Aggression (interference) levels were higher when prey were present, and larger salamanders were more aggressive than smaller ones but did not consume more mayfly prey. Our results suggest that investigating the environmental conditions, particularly the prey characteristics, that influence size-based competitive advantages will lead to a better understanding of predator population dynamics. Stoats (Mustela erminea), introduced to New Zealand in the late nineteenth century, are common in New Zealand beech (Nothofagus sp.) forests, where populations of feral house mice (Mus musculus) fluctuate between years much as voles do in the northern hemisphere. We present new field evidence and two models demonstrating (i) a strong correlation between density indices for young stoats in summer and for mice in the previous spring, and (ii) a significant linear relationship between productivity per female and spring density of mice up to 25 mice captures per 100 trap-nights. These models confirm that short-lived small mustelid predators dependent on fluctuating populations of prey have evolved means of matching their productivity to the prospects of success across a wide range, from total failure in rodent crash years to >12 independent young per female in rodent peak years. We suggest that the enhanced reproductive success of female stoats when rodents are abundant is due to a combination of critical improvements in both the reproductive physiology and the foraging behaviour of female stoats in rodent peak years. Conversely, a drastic shortage of rodents increases the mortality of embryos and nestlings, while the adult females are able to survive, and even remain relatively fat, on other foods.
