An introduction is presented to this special issue containing articles based on research done at the Osler Library of the History of Medicine at McGill University, founded by Sir William Osler.

A biography is presented for Sir William Osler, born in Ontario in 1849, son of an Anglican missionary. He studied medicine at the Toronto School of Medicine and McGill University, studied in Europe, and was named Professor of the Institutes of Medicine at McGill at age 25. He then taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins medical school, then was appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University in 1905. He died in 1919. His book collection was the foundation of the Osler Library at McGill.

The article explores the use of the script resembling "fs" instead in "ss" in the printed writings of English poet, artist, and printer William Blake, as opposed to contemporary conventional typography practices. Topics considered include Blake's disciple George Richmond, and his works including "The Book of Thel," "Jerusalem," and "illustrations of the Book of Job."

The article presents a bibliography of the literary award Giller Prize (now Scotiabank Giller Prize), reaching back to its origin over 20 years ago. Giller Prize was established in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch to honour his late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier. In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

The article focuses on the history of reading by examining educational journals printed in the 19th century Ontario, Canada. Topics discussed include how educational journals played a leading role in training of an informed public; how these played an important role for the schools and teachers on the best ways to teach reading and promoting literacy; and opinion that such journals dispensed to an emerging professional class (schoolteachers) on what to read.
