The article analyzes the extensive publishing record of Canadian female author Sara Jeannette Duncan. Her novel, "The Imperialist," has been regarded as one of the most important pre-1920 Canadian novels. It is a result of the nationalistic model of Canadian literature which emerged in the 1960s. It offers a look at the bibliographic evidence of Duncan's works, including "A Social Departure." It notes that "A Social Departure" reveals the sustained study of cultural displacement at the core of Duncan's large body of fiction. the It also discusses the cosmopolitan nature of contemporary Canadian fiction and criticism.

The article discusses the writing, publication, and reception of the 1972 book "Death on the Ice: The Great Newfoundland Sealing Disaster of 1914" by Cassie Brown with Harold Horwood, an account of the deaths from exposure of dozens of sealers seen as stemming from corporate indifference to their welfare. The book, an international bestseller written by and about Newfoundlanders, is seen as a landmark in Newfoundland print culture and cultural identity. Topics discussed include sealing in Newfoundland literature, Brown's early career and development as an author, and the life cycle of her book.

The article discusses the autobiography of Labrador author Lydia Campbell (1818-1905), a self-described "halfbreed" or Inuit Metis (a person of mixed Native American and European heritage), and its place in indigenous Labrador literature and culture. Campbell's life in central Labrador is discussed, as is the meaning of writing and literacy for Labrador Inuits. Her book, "Sketches of Labrador Life by a Labrador Woman," published around 1895, is discussed, as are the reasons she wrote it, and how it was received.

The article discusses the development of medical autobiography--the life writings of physicians and allied health workers--in Newfoundland and Labrador in the 20th century, with attention to the influence on the genre of medical missionary Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (1865-1940) and the local print culture he inspired. A case study is also presented, of "Snowshoe & Lancet: Memoirs of a Frontier Newfoundland Doctor, 1937-1948," published in 2000 by American physician Robert Skidmore Ecke (1909-2001).

Pendant de nombreuses décennies, le Canadian Literature Club of Toronto (1915-1973) s'assura une forte présence sur la scène culturelle torontoise. Il s'efforça d'encourager le développement de la littérature canadienne-anglaise en faisant la promotion de livres canadiens, de monter une dramaturgie originale et d'apporter un soutien aux auteurs. Le club fut fondé par l'éditeur et pigiste Donald French qui resta fidèle aux principes et aux méthodes qu'il avait proposés à l'origine. Cet article retrace l'historique du CLC en abordant les étapes de la carrière de Donald French et son rôle dans la création d'une infrastructure littéraire et éditoriale propre au Canada. Il examine également certains problèmes actuels auxquels font face le CLC et son fondateur dans le domaine de l'histoire du livre et l'histoire littéraire canadienne. Ainsi comment devons-nous envisager plus concrètement la relation entre les lecteurs et les écrivains? Est-il possible de conceptualiser le rôle du lecteur autrement que comme consommateur culturel ? En quoi consiste le rôle de l'éditeur dans la production culturelle ? Quel est le lien qui existe entre les organisations locales ou régionales et la culture dite nationale ? ou encore entre une culture bourgeoise ou «sans grandes prétentions» et l'art noble ou sérieux? Un oligopole, créé par trois éminents éditeurs de Toronto W.J. Gage, Copp, Clark et la Canada Publishing Company, dirigea de 1885 à 1907 la publication du lucratif Ontario Readers destiné aux lecteurs des écoles primaires. Cette étude élucide les circonstances dans lesquelles les trois éditeurs ont acquis une position dominante ainsi que les stratégies qu'ils ont déployées pour se maintenir ainsi en force durant 22 ans. Elle nous éclaire également sur le rôle central exercé par le ministre de l'Éducation de l'époque devenu plus tard premier ministre de l'Ontario, George W. Ross. L'article met en relief les influences politiques et les pressions commerciales qui ont joué en faveur de l'autorisation des manuels scolaires et de leur diffusion à travers la province.
