1. SGX Switchless Calls Made Configless

Abstract

Intel's software guard extensions (SGX) provide hardware enclaves to guarantee confidentiality and integrity for sensitive code and data. However, systems leveraging such security mechanisms must often pay high performance overheads. A major source of this overhead is SGX enclave transitions which induce expensive cross-enclave context switches. The Intel SGX SDK mitigates this with a switchless call mechanism for transitionless cross-enclave calls using worker threads. Intel's SGX switchless call implementation improves performance but provides limited flexibility: developers need to statically fix the system configuration at build time, which is error-prone and misconfigurations lead to performance degradations and waste of CPU resources. ZC-SWITCHLESS is a configless and efficient technique to drive the execution of SGX switchless calls. Its dynamic approach optimises the total switchless worker threads at runtime to minimise CPU waste. Abstract

We present the Phase A Science Case for the Multi-conjugate Adaptive-optics Visible Imager-Spectrograph (MAVIS), planned for the Adaptive Optics Facility (AOF) of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). MAVIS is a general-purpose instrument for exploiting the highest possible angular resolution of any single optical telescope available in the next decade, either on Earth or in space, and with sensitivity comparable to (or better than) larger aperture facilities. MAVIS uses two deformable mirrors in addition to the deformable secondary mirror of the AOF, providing a mean V-band Strehl ratio of >10% (goal >15%) across a relatively large (30 arc second) science field. This equates to a resolution of, 141 pages, 79 figures, 10Mb. Modified version of the Phase A Science Case submitted to ESO in April 2020 as part of the MAVIS Phase A design study. 3. Attractors and Attracting Neighborhoods for Multiflows

Abstract

We already know a great deal about dynamical systems with uniqueness in forward time. Indeed, flows, semiflows, and maps (both invertible and not) have been studied at length. A view that has proven particularly fruitful is topological: consider invariant sets (attractors, repellers, periodic orbits, etc.) as topological objects, and the connecting sets between them form gradient like flows. In the case of systems with uniqueness in forward time, an attractor in one system is related to nearby attractors in a family of other, "close enough" systems. One way of seeing that connection is through the Conley decomposition (and the Conley index) [2], [13]. This approach requires focusing on isolated invariant sets - that is, invariant sets with isolating neighborhoods. If there is an invariant set $I$, which has an isolating neighborhood $N$ $\ldots$. This approach was expanded to discrete time systems which lack uniqueness in forward time, using relations, in [7] and [11]. Relations do not rely on uniqueness in forward time, but the graph of any map is a relation; thus they serve to generalize maps. Some of this is reviewed in the next few sections. In addition, I expanded on work done in [7] to show that in compact metric spaces, attractors for closed relations continue (see Section 6). On the continuous time side, more work needs to be done. This paper is a step toward a more systematic approach for continuous time systems which lack uniqueness in forward time. This work applies to Filippov systems [4] and in control theory [12]. In the following pages, we establish a tool (multiflows) for discussing the continuous time case and develop a framework for understanding attractors (and therefore stability) in these systems. Abstract

In 1874 Brill and Noether designed a seminal geometric method for computing bases of Riemann-Roch spaces. From then, their method has led to several algorithms, some of them being implemented in computer algebra systems. The usual proofs often rely on abstract concepts of algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. In this paper we present a short self-contained and elementary proof that mostly needs Newton polygons, Hensel lifting, bivariate resultants, and Chinese remaindering.

Abstract

International audience; This paper proposes a benchmark of submissions to Detection and Classification Acoustic Scene and Events 2021 Challenge (DCASE) Task 4 representing a sampling of the state-of-the-art in Sound Event Detection task. The submissions are evaluated according to the two polyphonic sound detection score scenarios proposed for the DCASE 2021 Challenge Task 4, which allow to make an analysis on whether submissions are designed to perform fine-grained temporal segmentation, coarse-grained temporal segmentation, or have been designed to be polyvalent on the scenarios proposed. We study the solutions proposed by participants to analyze their robustness to varying level target to non-target signal-to-noise ratio and to temporal localization of target sound events. A last experiment is proposed in order to study the impact of non-target events on systems outputs. Results show that systems adapted to provide coarse segmentation outputs are more robust to different target to non-target signal-to-noise ratio and, with the help of specific data augmentation methods, they are more robust to time localization of the original event. Results of the last experiment display that systems tend to spuriously predict short events when non-target events are present. This is particularly true for systems that are tailored to have a fine segmentation.

Abstract

International audience; In this work we present a novel second order accurate well balanced (WB) finite volume (FV) scheme for the solution of the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) equations and the first order CCZ4 formulation (FO-CCZ4) of the Einstein field equations of general relativity, as well as the fully coupled FO-CCZ4 + GRMHD system. These systems of first order hyperbolic PDEs allow to study the dynamics of the matter and the dynamics of the space-time according to the theory of general relativity. The new well balanced finite volume scheme presented here exploits the knowledge of an equilibrium solution of interest when integrating the conservative fluxes, the nonconservative products and the algebraic source terms, and also when performing the piecewise linear data reconstruction. This results in a rather simple modification of the underlying second order FV scheme, which, however, being able to cancel numerical errors committed with respect to the equilibrium component of the numerical solution, substantially improves the accuracy and long-time stability of the numerical scheme when simulating small perturbations of stationary equilibria. In particular, the need for well balanced techniques appears to be more and more crucial as the applications increase their complexity. We close the paper with a series of numerical tests of increasing difficulty, where we study the evolution of small perturbations of accretion problems and stable TOV neutron stars. Our results show that the well balancing significantly improves the long-time stability of the finite volume scheme compared to a standard one.

Abstract

We investigate the effect of speaker localization on the performance of speech recognition systems in a multispeaker, multichannel environment. Given the speaker location information, speech separation is performed in three stages. In the first stage, a simple delay-and-sum (DS) beamformer is used to enhance the signal impinging from the speaker location which is then used to estimate a time-frequency mask corresponding to the localized speaker using a neural network. This mask is used to compute the second order statistics and to derive an adaptive beamformer in the third stage. We generated a multichannel, multispeaker, reverberated, noisy dataset inspired from the well studied WSJ0-2mix and study the performance of the proposed pipeline in terms of the word error rate (WER). An average WER of $29.4$% was achieved using the ground truth localization information and $42.4$% using the localization information estimated via GCC-PHAT. The signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) between the speakers has a higher impact on the ASR performance, to the extent of reducing the WER by $59$% relative for a SIR increase of $15$ dB. By contrast, increasing the spatial distance to $50^\circ$ or more improves the WER by $23$% relative only, Comment: Submitted to ICASSP 2020

Abstract

13+15 pages; International audience; The stabilizer ZX-calculus is a rigorous graphical language for reasoning about quantum mechanics. The language is sound and complete: one can transform a stabilizer ZX-diagram into another one using the graphical rewrite rules if and only if these two diagrams represent the same quantum evolution or quantum state. We previously showed that the stabilizer ZX-calculus can be simplified by reducing the number of rewrite rules, without losing the property of completeness [Backens, Perdrix & Wang, EPTCS 236:1--20, 2017]. Here, we show that most of the remaining rules of the language are indeed necessary. We do however leave as an open question the necessity of two rules. These include, surprisingly, the bialgebra rule, which is an axiomatisation of complementarity, the cornerstone of the ZX-calculus. Furthermore, we show that a weaker ambient category -- a braided autonomous category instead of the usual compact closed category -- is sufficient to recover the meta rule 'only connectivity matters', even without assuming any symmetries of the generators.

Abstract

We study a variational model which combines features of the Ginzburg-Landau model in 2D and of the Mumford-Shah functional. As in the classical Ginzburg-Landau theory, a prescribed number of point vortices appear in the small energy regime; the model allows for discontinuities, and the energy penalizes their length. The novel phenomenon here is that the vortices have a fractional degree $1/m$ with $m\geq 2$ prescribed. Those vortices must be connected by line discontinuities to form clusters of total integer degrees. The vortices and line discontinuities are therefore coupled through a topological constraint. As in the Ginzburg-Landau model, the energy is parameterized by a small length scale $\varepsilon>0$. We perform a complete $��$-convergence analysis of the model as $\varepsilon\downarrow0$ in the small energy regime. We then study the structure of minimizers of the limit problem. In particular, we show that the line discontinuities of a minimizer solve a variant of the Steiner problem. We finally prove that for small $\varepsilon>0$, the minimizers of the original problem have the same structure away from the limiting vortices.

Abstract

We study a two-player, zero-sum, stochastic game with incomplete information on one side in which the players are allowed to play more and more frequently. The informed player observes the realization of a Markov chain on which the payoffs depend, while the non-informed player only observes his opponent's actions. We show the existence of a limit value as the time span between two consecutive stages vanishes; this value is characterized through an auxiliary optimization problem and as the solution of an Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

For the tests, the used tool was a noncoated carbide tool (TNMA 160412) without chip breaker. The cutting material is a chrome molybdenum alloy type (ASI 4140). The cylindrical test tubes have a diameter of 120 mm and a length of 30 mm. For the first time, we present an analysis of forces and moments for different depths of cut and different feed rates.
