We study edge modes in topological semimetals which have an energy band structure of ordinary semimetals but can be characterized by a Chern number. More specifically, we focus on a Qi-Wu-Zhang-type square-lattice model and a Haldane-type honeycomb model, both of which exhibit antichiral edge modes whose wave packets propagate in the same direction at both parallel edges of the strip. To obtain these analytical solutions of the edge modes, we apply the transfer matrix method which was developed in the previous work [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{101}, 014442 (2020)]. As a result, we show that the bulk-edge correspondence is broken down for a certain range of the model parameters. More precisely, when increasing the strength of a hopping amplitude of the Qi-Wu-Zhang-type model, the edge modes abruptly disappear, although the non-trivial Chern number does not change. In the Haldane-type model, for varying the model parameters, the edge modes do not necessarily disappear, and the non-trivial Chern number does not change. Significant effort has been devoted to the study of "non-Fermi liquid" (NFL) metals: gapless conducting systems that lack a quasiparticle description. One class of NFL metals involves a finite density of fermions interacting with soft order parameter fluctuations near a quantum critical point. The problem has been extensively studied in a large N limit (N corresponding to the number of fermion flavors) where universal behavior can be obtained by solving a set of coupled saddle-point equations. However a remarkable study by S.-S.~Lee revealed the breakdown of such approximations in two spatial dimensions. We show that an alternate approach, in which the fermions belong to the fundamental representation of a global SU(N) flavor symmetry, while the order parameter fields transform under the adjoint representation (a "matrix large N" theory), yields a tractable large N limit. At low energies, the system consists of an overdamped boson with dynamical exponent $z=3$ coupled to a non-Fermi liquid with self energy $\Sigma(\omega) \sim \omega^{2/3}$, consistent with previous studies., Comment: 8 pages, two columns, 2 figures

Tree-level scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory satisfy a recursion relation due to Berends and Giele which yields e.g., the famous Parke-Taylor formula for maximally helicity violating amplitudes. We show that the origin of this recursion relation becomes clear in the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism, which encodes a field theory in an L∞-algebra. The recursion relation is obtained in the transition to a smallest representative in the quasi-isomorphism class of that L∞-algebra, known as a minimal model. In fact, the quasi-isomorphism contains all the information about the scattering theory. As we explain, the computation of such a minimal model is readily performed in any BV quantizable theory, which, in turn, produces recursion relations for its tree-level scattering amplitudes.

We study a simple extension of quasi-single field inflation in which the inflaton interacts with multiple extra massive scalars known as isocurvatons. Due to the breaking of time translational invariance by the inflaton background, the theory includes kinetic mixings among the inflaton and isocurvatons. These mixings give rise to novel new features in the primordial non-Gaussianities of the scalar curvature perturbation. A noteworthy feature is the amplitude of the squeezed bispectrum can grow nearly as $(k_s/k_l)^{-3}$ while oscillating as ${\rm \cos\gamma \log}(k_s/k_l)$, where $k_s/k_l$ is the ratio of the lengths of the short and long wavevectors. Observation of such a shape would provide evidence for the existence of multiple isocurvatons during inflation. In general relativity, traversable wormholes are possible provided they do not represent shortcuts in the spacetime. Einstein equations, together with the achronal averaged null energy condition, demand to take longer for an observer to go through the wormhole than through the ambient space. This forbids wormholes from connecting two distant regions in the space. The situation is different when higher-curvature corrections are considered. Here, we construct a traversable wormhole solution connecting two asymptotically flat regions, otherwise disconnected. This geometry is an electrovacuum solution to the Lovelock theory of gravity coupled to an Abelian gauge field. The electric flux suffices to support the wormhole throat and to stabilize the solution. In fact, we show that, in contrast to other wormhole solutions previously found in this theory, the one constructed here turns out to be stable under scalar perturbations. We also consider wormholes in anti-de Sitter (AdS). We present a protection argument showing that, while stable traversable wormholes connecting two asymptotically locally AdS5 spaces do exist in the higher-curvature theory, the region of the parameter space where such solutions are admitted lies outside the causality bounds coming from AdS/CFT. Active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles (AOUPs) are overdamped particles in an interaction potential subject to external Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noises. They can be transformed into a system of underdamped particles under additional velocity dependent forces and subject to white noise forces. There has been some discussion in the literature on whether AOUPs can be in equilibrium for particular interaction potentials and how far from equilibrium they are in the limit of small persistence time. By using a theorem on the time reversed form of the AOUP Langevin-Ito equations, I prove that they have an equilibrium probability density invariant under time reversal if and only if their smooth interaction potential has zero third derivatives. In the limit of small persistence Ornstein-Uhlenbeck time $\tau$, a Chapman-Enskog expansion of the Fokker-Planck equation shows that the probability density has a local equilibrium solution in the particle momenta modulated by a reduced probability density that varies slowly with the position. The reduced probability density satisfies a continuity equation in which the probability current has an asymptotic expansion in powers of $\tau$. Keeping up to $O(\tau)$ terms, this equation is a diffusion equation, which has an equilibrium stationary solution with zero current. However, $O(\tau^2)$ terms contain fifth and sixth order spatial derivatives and the continuity equation no longer has a zero current stationary solution. We find a new effect for the behaviour of Von Neumann entropy. For this we derive the framework for describing Von Neumann entropy in non-Hermitian quantum systems and then apply it to a simple interacting PT symmetric bosonic system. We show that our model is well defined even in the PT broken regime with the introduction of a time-dependent metric and that it displays three distinct behaviours relating to the PT symmetry of the original time-independent Hamiltonian. When the symmetry is unbroken, the entropy undergoes rapid decay to zero (so-called "sudden death") with a subsequent revival. At the exceptional point it decays asymptotically to zero and when the symmetry is spontaneously broken it decays asymptotically to a finite constant value ("eternal life")., 8 pages, 3 figures

We make a rigorous computation of the relative entropy between the vacuum state and a coherent state for a free scalar in the framework of algebraic description of quantum field theory (AQFT). We study the case of the Rindler wedge. Previous calculations including path integral methods and computations from the lattice give a result for such relative entropy which involves integrals of expectation values of the energy-momentum stress tensor along the considered region. However, the stress tensor is in general nonunique. That means that if we start with some stress tensor, then we can "improve" it adding a conserved term without modifying the Poincaré charges. On the other hand, the presence of such an improving term affects the naive expectation for the relative entropy by a nonvanishing boundary contribution along the entangling surface. In other words, this means that there is an ambiguity in the usual formula for the relative entropy coming from the nonuniqueness of the stress tensor. The main motivation of this work is to solve this puzzle. We first show that all choices of stress tensor except the canonical one are not allowed by positivity and monotonicity of the relative entropy. Then we fully compute the relative entropy between the vacuum and a coherent state in the framework of AQFT using the Araki formula and the techniques of modular theory. We implement the no-boundary proposal for the wave function of the universe in an exactly solvable Bianchi IX minisuperspace model with two scale factors. We extend our earlier work (Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 081302, 2018 / arXiv:1804.01102) to include the contribution from the $\mathbb{C}\text{P}^2 \setminus B^4$ topology. The resulting wave function yields normalizable probabilities and thus fits into a predictive framework for semiclassical quantum cosmology. We find that the amplitude is low for large anisotropies. In the isotropic limit the usual Hartle-Hawking wave function for the de Sitter minisuperspace model is recovered. Inhomogeneous perturbations in an extended minisuperspace are shown to be initially in their ground state. We also demonstrate that the precise mathematical implementation of the no-boundary proposal as a functional integral in minisuperspace depends on detailed aspects of the model, including the choice of gauge-fixing. This shows in particular that the choice of contour cannot be fundamental, adding weight to the recent proposal that the semiclassical no-boundary wave function should be defined solely in terms of a collection of saddle points. We adopt this approach in most of this paper. Finally we show that the semiclassical tunneling wave function of the universe is essentially equal to the no-boundary state in this particular minisuperspace model, at least in the subset of the classical domain where the former is known., 49+29 pages, 19 figures

Spontaneous scalarization is a mechanism that endows relativistic stars and black holes with a nontrivial configuration only when their spacetime curvature exceeds some threshold. The standard way to trigger spontaneous scalarization is via a tachyonic instability at the linear level, which is eventually quenched due to the effect of non-linear terms. In this paper, we identify all of the terms in the Horndeski action that contribute to the (effective) mass term in the linearized equations and, hence, can cause or contribute to the tachyonic instability that triggers scalarization., Added a term than had accidentally been omitted in equations (24), (25), (40), (42). We prove that Einstein's equations coupled to equations of Israel-Stewart-type, describing the dynamics of a relativistic fluid with bulk viscosity and nonzero baryon charge (without shear viscosity or baryon diffusion) dynamically coupled to gravity, are causal in the full nonlinear regime. We also show that these equations can be written as a first-order symmetric hyperbolic system, implying local existence and uniqueness of solutions to the equations of motion. We use an arbitrary equation of state and do not make any simplifying symmetry or near-equilibrium assumption, requiring only physically natural conditions on the fields. In a recent paper [arXiv:1806.06254], we explored the space of solutions of the exotic massive 3D gravity theory proposed in [arXiv:1806.04179]. We showed that the theory admits a rich space of vacua, including asymptotically Anti de-Sitter (AdS) geometries obeying different types of boundary conditions. The examples include black holes dressed with low decaying gravitons. Based on what happens in other theories of massive gravity, we conjectured that such geometries appear on a curve of the parameter space (chiral curve) where the exotic massive gravity on AdS with sufficiently strong boundary conditions results dual to a 2D chiral conformal field theory. Here, we show that this expectation is consistent with the conserved charges and thermodynamical properties of the black holes of the theory, which have recently been computed [arXiv:1812.09525]. When the boundary conditions are relaxed relative to the standard Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions, the theory exhibits solutions consistent with the definition of the so-called Log-gravity. The asymptotic behavior of these solutions presents a logarithmic term in the Fefferman-Graham expansion that, nonetheless, is compatible with the AdS asymptotic symmetries. This long range interaction is due to a mode of the massive gravity that becomes massless precisely on the chiral curve. We construct exact solutions exhibiting this behavior, which admit to be interpreted as fully backreacting gravitational waves propagating on an extremal black hole, and carrying non-vanishing gravitational energy. Numerical relativity (NR) simulations provide the most accurate binary black hole gravitational waveforms, but are prohibitively expensive for applications such as parameter estimation. Surrogate models of NR waveforms have been shown to be both fast and accurate. However, NR-based surrogate models are limited by the training waveforms' length, which is typically about 20 orbits before merger. We remedy this by hybridizing the NR waveforms using both post-Newtonian and effective one body waveforms for the early inspiral. We present NRHybSur3dq8, a surrogate model for hybridized nonprecessing numerical relativity waveforms, that is valid for the entire LIGO band (starting at $20~\text{Hz}$) for stellar mass binaries with total masses as low as $2.25\,M_{\odot}$. We include the $\ell \leq 4$ and $(5,5)$ spin-weighted spherical harmonic modes but not the $(4,1)$ or $(4,0)$ modes. This model has been trained against hybridized waveforms based on 104 NR waveforms with mass ratios $q\leq8$, and $|\chi_{1z}|,|\chi_{2z}| \leq 0.8$, where $\chi_{1z}$ ($\chi_{2z}$) is the spin of the heavier (lighter) BH in the direction of orbital angular momentum. The surrogate reproduces the hybrid waveforms accurately, with mismatches $\lesssim 3\times10^{-4}$ over the mass range $2.25M_{\odot} \leq M \leq 300 M_{\odot}$. At high masses ($M\gtrsim40M_{\odot}$), where the merger and ringdown are more prominent, we show roughly two orders of magnitude improvement over existing waveform models. We also show that the surrogate works well even when extrapolated outside its training parameter space range, including at spins as large as 0.998. Finally, we show that this model accurately reproduces the spheroidal-spherical mode mixing present in the NR ringdown signal., Comment: Matches PRD version. The experiment has achieved a low energy threshold with improved sensitivity to low-mass (l10 GeV/c2) dark matter particles. We present an analysis of the final CDMSlite dataset, taken with a different detector than was used for the two previous CDMSlite datasets. This analysis includes a data "salting" method to protect against bias, improved noise discrimination, background modeling, and the use of profile likelihood methods to search for a dark matter signal in the presence of backgrounds. We achieve an energy threshold of 70 eV and significantly improve the sensitivity for dark matter particles with masses between 2.5 and 10 GeV/c2 compared to previous analyses. We set an upper limit on the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section in germanium of 5.4×10-42 cm2 at 5 GeV/c2, a factor of ∼2.5 improvement over the previous CDMSlite result.

We present a well-posed constraint-preserving scheme for evolving first-order metric perturbations on an arbitrary background with arbitrary source. We use this scheme to evolve the leading-order metric perturbation in order-reduced dynamical Chern-Simons gravity (dCS) on a Kerr background. In particular we test the stability of stationary dCS data on a Kerr background with stationary first-order dCS scalar field source. We find that the leading-order metric perturbation numerically exhibits linear growth, but that the level of this growth converges to zero with numerical resolution. We study the scalar stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) from astrophysical sources, including compact binary mergers and stellar collapses, in the Bras-Dicke theory of gravity. By contrast to tensor waves, we found the scalar SGWB to predominantly arise from stellar collapses. These collapses not only take place at higher astrophysical rates, but emit more energy. This is because, unlike tensor radiation, which mainly starts from quadrupole order, the scalar perturbation can be excited by changes in the monopole moment. In particular, in the case of stellar collapse into a neutron star or a black hole, the monopole radiation, at frequencies below 100\,Hz, is dominated by the memory effect. At low frequencies, the scalar SGWB spectrum follows a power law of $\Omega_\text{S}\propto f^\alpha$, with $\alpha = 1$. We predict that $\Omega_\text{S}$ is inversely proportional to the square of $\omega_{\rm BD}+2$, with $\quad(\omega_{\rm BD}+2)^2\Omega_S(f=25\,{\rm Hz}) = 2.8\times 10^{-6}$. We also estimate the detectability of the scalar SGWB for current and third-generation detector networks, and the bound on $\omega_{\rm BD}$ that can be imposed from these observations., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We present an optimal probabilistic protocol to distill quantum coherence. Inspired by a specific entanglement distillation protocol, our main result yields a strictly incoherent operation that produces one of a family of maximally coherent states of variable dimension from any pure quantum state. We also expand this protocol to the case where it is possible, for some initial states, to avert any waste of resources as far as the output states are concerned, by exploiting an additional transformation into a suitable intermediate state. These results provide practical schemes for efficient quantum resource manipulation.

We develop a macroscopic description of the space-time evolution of the energy-momentum tensor during the pre-equilibrium stage of a high-energy heavy-ion collision. Based on a weak coupling effective kinetic description of the microscopic equilibration process (\`a la "bottom-up"), we calculate the non-equilibrium evolution of the local background energy-momentum tensor as well as the non-equilibrium linear response to transverse energy and momentum perturbations for realistic boost-invariant initial conditions for heavy ion collisions. We demonstrate how this framework can be used on an event-by-event basis to propagate the energy momentum tensor from far-from-equilibrium initial state models, e.g. IP-Glasma, to the time $\tau_\text{hydro}$ when the system is well described by relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. The subsequent hydrodynamic evolution becomes essentially independent of the hydrodynamic initialization time $\tau_\text{hydro}$ as long as $\tau_\text{hydro}$ is chosen in an appropriate range where both kinetic and hydrodynamic descriptions overlap. We find that for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76\,\text{TeV}$ central Pb-Pb collisions, the typical time scale when viscous hydrodynamics with shear viscosity over entropy ratio $\eta/s=0.16$ becomes applicable is $\tau_\text{hydro}\sim 1\,\text{fm/c}$ after the collision., Comment: 45 pages, 27 figures, for the code of linear kinetic theory propagator KoMPoST used for this study see https://github.com/KMPST/KoMPoST

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in nanomachines. Among them, current-driven ones deserve special attention as quantum effects can play a significant role there. Examples of the latter are the so-called adiabatic quantum motors. In this paper, we propose using Anderson's localization to induce nonequilibrium forces in adiabatic quantum motors. We study the nonequilibrium current-induced forces and the maximum efficiency of these nanomotors in terms of their respective probability distribution functions. Expressions for these distribution functions are obtained in two characteristic regimes: the steady-state and the short-time regimes. Even though both regimes have distinctive expressions for their efficiencies, we find that, under certain conditions, the probability distribution functions of their maximum efficiency are approximately the same. Finally, we provide a simple relation to estimate the minimal disorder strength that should ensure efficient nanomotors. Fil: Fernández, Lucas Jonatan. We solve the dilaton field equation in the background of a spherically symmetric black hole in type II superstring theory with $\alpha'^3$ corrections in arbitrary $d$ spacetime dimensions. We then apply this result to obtain a spherically symmetric black hole solution with $\alpha'^3$ corrections in superstring theory compactified on a torus, coupled to such dilaton. We derive the mass-temperature relation using an improved top-hat model and a continuous formation model which takes into account the effects of the ordered angular momentum acquired through tidal-torque interaction between clusters, random angular momentum, dynamical friction, and modifications of the virial theorem to include an external pressure term usually neglected. We show that the mass-temperature relation differs from the classical self-similar behavior, $M \propto T^{3/2}$, and shows a break at $3--4$ keV, and a steepening with a decreasing cluster temperature. We then compare our mass-temperature relation with those obtained in the literature with $N$-body simulations for $f(R)$ and symmetron models. We find that the mass-temperature relation is not a good probe to test gravity theories beyond Einstein's general relativity, because the mass-temperature relation of the $\Lambda$CDM model is similar to that of the modified gravity theories., Comment: 11 pages; 2 figures; matches the published Phys. The evolution of quantum light through linear optical devices can be described by the scattering matrix $S$ of the system. For linear optical systems with $m$ possible modes, the evolution of $n$ input photons is given by a unitary matrix $U=\varphi_{m,M}(S)$ given by a known homomorphism, $\varphi_{m,M}$, which depends on the size of the resulting Hilbert space of the possible photon states, $M$. We present a method to decide whether a given unitary evolution $U$ for $n$ photons in $m$ modes can be achieved with linear optics or not and the inverse transformation $\varphi_{m,M}^{-1}$ when the transformation can be implemented. Together with previous results, the method can be used to find a simple optical system which implements any quantum operation within the reach of linear optics. In recent years, different on-shell 3→3 scattering formalisms have been proposed to be applied to both lattice QCD and infinite-volume scattering processes. We prove that the formulation in the infinite volume presented by Hansen and Sharpe in [M. T. Hansen and S. R. Sharpe, Phys. Rev. D 92, 114509 (2015).] and subsequently Briceño et al. in [R. A. Briceño, M. T. Hansen, and S. R. Sharpe, Phys. Rev. D 95, 074510 (2017).] can be recovered from the B-matrix representation, derived on the basis of S-matrix unitarity, presented by Mai et al. in [M. Mai, B. Hu, M. Döring, A. Pilloni, and A. Szczepaniak, Eur. Phys. J. A 53, 177 (2017).] and Jackura et al. in [A. Jackura, C. Fernández-Ramírez, V. Mathieu, M. Mikhasenko, J. Nys, A. Pilloni, K. Saldaña, N. Sherrill, and A. P. Szczepaniak (JPAC Collaboration), Eur. Phys. J. C 79, 56 (2019).] Therefore, both formalisms in the infinite volume are equivalent and the physical content is identical. Additionally, the Faddeev equations are recovered in the nonrelativistic limit of both representations.

We study theoretically the decay $\tau^- \to \nu_\tau P^- A$, with $P^-$ a $\pi^-$ or $K^-$ and $A$ an axial-vector resonance $b_1(1235)$, $h_1(1170)$, $h_1(1380)$, $a_1(1260)$, $f_1(1285)$ or any of the two poles of the $K_1(1270)$. The process proceeds through a triangle mechanism where a vector meson pair is first produced from the weak current and then one of the vectors produces two pseudoscalars, one of which reinteracts with the other vector to produce the axial resonance. For the initial weak hadronic production we use a recent formalism to account for the hadronization after the initial quark-antiquark pair produced from the weak current, which explicitly filters G-parity states and obtain easy analytic formulas after working out the angular momentum algebra. The model also takes advantage of the chiral unitary theories to evaluate the vector-pseudoscalar amplitudes, where the axial-vector resonances were obtained as dynamically generated from the VP interaction. During defect-antidefect scattering, bound modes frequently disappear into the continuous spectrum before the defects themselves collide. This leads to a structural, nonperturbative change in the spectrum of small excitations. Sometimes the effect can be seen as a hard wall from which the defect can bounce off. We show the existence of these spectral walls and study their properties in the $\phi^4$ model with BPS preserving impurity, where the spectral wall phenomenon can be isolated because the static force between the antikink and the impurity vanishes. We present two classes of inhomogeneous, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Perfect Fluid field equations with cosmological constant generalizing the Vaidya-Shah solution. Some special limits of our solution reduce to the known inhomogeneous charged perfect fluid solutions of the Einstein field equations and under some other limits we obtain new charged and uncharged solutions with cosmological constant. Uncharged solutions in particular represent cosmological models where the universe may undergo a topology change and in between is a mixture of two different Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes with different spatial curvatures. We show that there exist some spacelike surfaces where the Ricci scalar and pressure of the fluid diverge but the mass density of the fluid distribution remains finite. Such spacelike surfaces are known as (sudden) cosmological singularities. We study the behavior of our new solutions in their general form as the radial distance goes to zero and infinity.
