In the present study, the structures and mechanisms of the heatwaves (HWs) associated with the quasi-biweekly (QBW; 10–20-day period) variability (QBW-HW) over southern China (SC; 106°–120°E, 21°–30°N) are investigated by using observation data from surface stations in China and the related gridded dataset (CN05.1), and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP–NCAR) reanalysis. We found that the strongest anticyclonic anomaly and subsidence appear over SC during the developing phase of QBW-HW, and then induced excess solar radiation at surface and significant diabatic heating lead to a positive surface air temperature change, thus favoring occurrence of QBW-HW over SC. In addition, we found a wet near-surface atmosphere in the QBW-HW events over SC, and further confirmed that near-surface moisture should play an important role in the occurrence of QBW-HW, via absorptions of longwave and shortwave radiation. This result is quite different from previous studies since they did not pay attention to the near-surface moisture. On the other hand, warmer SAT favors more water vapor evaporated from the moist soil when considering the Clausius–Clapeyron relationship. Then, the positive feedback processes promote the occurrence of QBW-HW over SC. In contrast, during the developing and warm phases of QBW-HW over SC, except for the near-surface level, the troposphere is in a dry condition, even at 850 and 700 hPa. In the QBW-HW events over SC, the factor responsible for the wet near-surface atmosphere is the enhanced surface evaporation, which is attributed to strengthened surface wind speed and background moist soil. Significance Statement Under the background of global warming, heatwaves over Southern China are experiencing an increasing trend. In this study, we want to understand the structures and mechanisms of the heatwaves related to 10–20-day (quasi-biweekly) variability. We that found some structures of heatwaves (e.g., anticyclonic anomalies along with subsidence) are consistent with previous studies. In addition, we also show that the moist soil and increased induced near-surface moisture play a key role in the occurrence of heatwaves over Southern China, via enhanced absorptions of longwave and shortwave radiation. This study is helpful for understanding the processes and prediction of heatwaves over Southern China. Future work should examine the findings by some numerical experiments with a climate model.

Cascade reservoirs were designed for Yalong River Basin, which ranks the 3rd largest hydropower base in China. Reservoir impoundment has certain impacts on local climate, but few researches focus on this field. This paper integrates the spatiotemporal analysis techniques and geostatistical methods to identify the reservoir projected meteorological indices (MIs) variations as well as the impact scope under different circumstances. Results show: The reservoir projected variations of moisture indexes were much more significant than temperatures. Anthropogenic disturbance has led to dramatic decrease of relative humidity in the past decade, far beyond its periodic amplitude range. Moreover, dry valley faced more serious drought risk but reservoir impoundment of this region alleviated the local drought risk. The daily minimum temperature, relative to the maximum temperature, was more sensitive to catchment changes with an earlier appearance of temperature zone variation. Since impounding, the MIs internal relationships in non-dry valley varied significantly more than that in dry valley, with the positive correlation of 0.7 between the relative humidity and precipitation weakened greatly. The severe warming hotspots distributed in the upper reach and had the probability of 0.95- 1 to exceed 1.5℃ IPCC control target. This study provides references for the disturbance of reservoir impoundment to local climate at multiple temporal-spatial scales under different circumstances and contributes to the MIs variation pattern identification and quantitative risk assessment.

Analysis of the NCEP and 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) data and the Xisha Island station observation indicates that the low-level meridional wind (LLMW) over the South China Sea (SCS) experienced an interdecadal variation since the late 1970s. The LLMW change is associated with the reduction of tropospheric temperature in midlatitude East Asia. A mechanism is put forward to explain the triggering and maintenance of the tropospheric cooling. The enhanced convective heating over the southern South China Sea results in a meridional vertical overturning circulation, with anomalous descending motion appearing over continental East Asia. The anomalous descending motion reduces the local humidity through both anomalous low-level divergence and dry vertical advection. The decrease of the local tropospheric humidity leads to the enhanced outgoing longwave radiation into space and thus cold temperature anomalies. The decrease of the temperature and thickness leads to anomalous low (high) pressure and convergent (divergent) flows at upper (lower) levels. This further enhances the descending motion and leads to a positive feedback loop. The fall in tropospheric temperature over continental East Asia reduces the land–sea thermal contrast and leads to the weakening of cross-equatorial flows and the LLMW over SCS. A further diagnosis indicates that the LLMW is closely linked to the summer precipitation and temperature variations in China on interdecadal time scales. A weakening of the LLMW after 1976 is associated with a “−, +, −” meridional rainfall pattern, with less rain in Guangdong Province and north China but more rain in the Yangtze and Huaihe River basins and northeast China, and a “+, −, +” temperature pattern, with increased (decreased) surface temperature in the south and north (central) China.
