When C02 leakage occurs from a high pressure enclosure, the C02 jet formed can produce fierce turbulent flow generating acoustic emission with possible phase change, depending on the pressure of the enclosure, and a significant temperature drop in the region close to the releasing point. Acoustic Emission (AE) and infrared imaging technologies are promising methods for on-line monitoring of such accidental leakage. In this paper, leakage experiments were carried out with a C02 container under well controlled conditions in a laboratory. Acoustic signals and temperature distribution at the leakage area were acquired using an acoustic sensor and an infrared thermal imaging camera. The acoustic signal was analyzed in both time and frequency domains. The characteristics of the signal frequencies are identified, and their suitability for leakage detection is investigated. The location of the leakage can be identified by seeking the lowest temperature area or point in the infrared image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
