Packaging insulation materials with high thermal conductivity and excellent dielectric properties are favorable to meet the high demand and rapid development of third generation power semiconductors. In this study, we propose to improve the thermal conductivity of epoxy resin (EP) by incorporating a three-dimensional boron nitride thermally conductive network. Detailedly, polyurethane foam (PU) was used as a supporter, and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were loaded onto the PU supporter through chemical bonding (BNNS@PU). After immersing BNNS@PU into the EP resin, EP-based thermally conductive composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted impregnation. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope were used to characterize the chemical bonding and morphological structure of BNNS@PU, respectively. The content of BNNS in BNNS@PU/EP composites was quantitatively analyzed by TGA. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the BNNS@PU/EP composites reaches 0.521 W/m K with an enhancement rate η of 30.89 at an ultra-low BNNS filler content (5.93 wt. %). Additionally, the BNNS@PU/EP composites have excellent dielectric properties with the frequency range from 101 to 106 Hz. Over the last two decades, Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) imaging with a scanning transmission electron microscope has emerged as a technique of choice for visualizing complex chemical, electronic, plasmonic, and phononic phenomena in complex materials and structures. The availability of the EELS data necessitates the development of methods to analyze multidimensional data sets with complex spatial and energy structures. Traditionally, the analysis of these data sets has been based on analysis of individual spectra, one at a time, whereas the spatial structure and correlations between individual spatial pixels containing the relevant information of the physics of underpinning processes have generally been ignored and analyzed only via the visualization as 2D maps. Here, we develop a machine learning-based approach and workflows for the analysis of spatial structures in 3D EELS data sets using a combination of dimensionality reduction and multichannel rotationally invariant variational autoencoders. This approach is illustrated for the analysis of both the plasmonic phenomena in a system of nanowires and in the core excitations in functional oxides using low loss and core-loss EELS, respectively. Low-energy ion beam irradiation, combined with the introduction of impurities, presents a promising approach for nanopatterning silicon (Si) surfaces. In this research, we investigate the surface evolution of Si (100) surfaces irradiated by 75 eV helium (He) plasma, in the presence of tantalum (Ta), traditionally regarded as an impurity incapable of initiating pattern formation, as evidenced in prior studies. The Ta impurities are pre-deposited onto the Si surfaces using the magnetron sputtering method, which offers a more controlled and quantifiable approach compared with the conventional co-deposition route. After irradiation at 800 K, dense cone arrays are produced on the Si surface. The growth of the cones is explored for fluence spanning (1–10) × 1025 m−2. The cross-sectional scanning electron microscope images indicate that the cone lengths and base width are well characterized by t1/2 dependence. The kinetics of the cone growth follow Fick's law, characterized by an effective diffusive mechanism with the coefficients of diffusion: D = 6.49 ± 0.83 × 10−16 m−2 s−1. Transmission electron microscope observations reveal that the cone has distinct inner and outer parts with different microstructures and a clear interface. The growth mechanism of these cones is elucidated as a composite process involving preferential sputtering, the destabilizing influence of He bubbles, and the migration of adatoms. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) recordings of dynamic nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS) are difficult to analyze due to the noise caused by low frame rate, insufficient resolution, and blurriness induced by applied electric potentials. Here, we develop an image processing platform enhanced by the physics of the underlying system to track the motion of buckling NEMS structures in the presence of high noise levels. The algorithm is composed of an image filter, two data filters, and a nonlinear regression model, which utilizes the expected form of the physical solution. The method was applied to the recordings of a NEMS beam about 150 nm wide, undergoing intra- and inter-well post-buckling states with a transition rate of approximately 0.5 Hz. The algorithm can track the dynamical motion of the NEMS and capture the dependency of deflection amplitude on the compressive force on the beam. With the help of the proposed algorithm, the transition from inter-well to intra-well motion is clearly resolved for buckling NEMS imaged under SEM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A non-destructive method for detecting sub-micrometer-sized micropipes on an entire wafer surface is investigated. Since it is difficult to detect sub-micrometer-sized micropipes due to their small core size, a non-destructively and accurately detecting method is required. To solve the issue, we focus on a characteristic depression generated around micropipes, namely, line-shaped depressions. In this paper, the location of line-shaped depressions is identified by using optical inspection, and the line-shaped depressions are distinguished whether micropipes exhibit line-shaped depression or not by using mirror electron microscope observation as high-resolution inspection. The accuracy of the distinction results is confirmed by scanning electron microscope observation, and electrical characteristics of the P–N diode are fabricated using the inspected wafer. Furthermore, the sub-micrometer-sized micropipes are observed at the sites of leakage current identified by emission microscopy. Additionally, device simulation of the blocking-voltage characteristics of P–N diodes suggests that the increase in leakage current depends on the electric field at the sub-micrometer-sized micropipes, regardless of their core size. Gastropods forage with their radula, a thin chitinous membrane with embedded teeth, which scratch across the substrate to lose food particles. During this interaction, the risk of loosening particles is obvious without having a specialized mechanism holding them on the tooth surface. As mucus secretions are essential in molluscan life cycles and the locomotion and attachment gels are known to have an instant high adhesion, we have hypothesized that the saliva could support particle retention during feeding. As adhesion of snail saliva was not studied before, we present here an experimental setup to test its particle-binding capacity using a large land snail (Lissachatina fulica, Stylommatophora, Heterobranchia). This experiment was also applied to the gels produced by the snail foot for comparison and can be potentially applied to various fluids present at a small volume in the future. We found, that the saliva has high particle retention capacity that is comparable to the foot glue of the snail. To gain some insight into the properties of the saliva, we additionally studied it in the scanning electron microscope, estimated its viscosity in a de-wetting experiment, and investigated its elemental composition using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy reveling higher contents of Ca, Zn and other potential cross-linkers similar to those found in the glue. In recent years, precision and accuracy for a more precise critical dimension (CD) control have been required in CD measurement technology. CD distortion between the measurement by a critical dimension scanning electron microscope (CD-SEM) and a reference tool is the most important factor for a more accurate CD measurement. CD bias varies by a CD-SEM and a pattern condition. Therefore, it is urgently needed to identify, characterize, and quantify those parameters that may or may not affect the CD measurement by a CD-SEM. The sensitivity of the Monte Carlo simulated CD-SEM images with multiple physical modeling components has been studied previously. In this study, we demonstrate that the work function and elastic scattering potential models have a significant impact on secondary electron emission intensity, but their influence on the shape of the linescan profile is small, and other factors like the optical energy loss function and dielectric function models have even smaller effects. We have evaluated the uncertainty in the linescan profiles of Si line structures with different sidewall angles due to several different physical factors. It is found that when the CD is evaluated by a peak/valley method, the uncertainty of the CD is negligible. Therefore, it is concluded that the CD value and its related uncertainty are not critically related to the physical factors of the present Monte Carlo simulation model but rely dominantly on the line structure and electron beam parameters. We report on the metrological characterization of the emission from a germanium-vacancy center in diamond under a microfabricated solid immersion lens in a confocal laser-scanning microscope setup. Ge ions were implanted into a synthetic diamond at 3 MeV, and germanium-vacancy centers were then formed by subsequent annealing. Afterward, solid immersion lenses were fabricated in a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope. The photoluminescence was investigated at room temperature in terms of the spectral distribution, the excited state lifetime, the second-order correlation function, and the saturation behavior, proving simultaneous high single-photon purity and high brightness. Two methods were exploited to minimize the residual multi-photon probability: spectral filtering and temporal filtering. According to these results, we assume that Raman scattered photons and emission from neighboring color centers play an important role in the residual multi-photon emission probability. The system efficiency of the single-photon source was investigated and found to be in accordance with the value calculated from all sources of loss in the setup. The branching ratio of the germanium-vacancy center for the decay into the ground state and into metastable state was calculated. This study elucidates the thermal-induced bandgap broadening (TBB) phenomenon in copolymer organic semiconductors (OSCs). From the perspective of device physics, the diketopyrrolopyrrole-based copolymer was employed as the semiconductor layer to fabricate a back-to-back Schottky junction structure. Characterization through the analysis of I–V curves enables the qualitative exploration of the correlation between bandgap and temperature in copolymer OSCs. Then, technology computer-aided design was utilized to explore the influence of thermal-induced bandgap broadening on the back-to-back Schottky I–V curves. Subsequently, the variable temperature UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectra of the copolymer OSCs were analyzed, providing quantitative evidence of the thermal-induced bandgap broadening phenomenon and confirming its recoverability. Through the research of the Schottky junction and absorption spectra, we verified the consistency of the TBB phenomenon in both the electrical and optical bandgaps. From the scanning electron microscope images of the copolymer OSC films, it is found that the thermal-induced bandgap broadening phenomenon is mainly caused by thermal expansion and increased disorder of copolymer molecules. This study highlights a physical phenomenon of copolymer OSCs that is different from most inorganic semiconductors, and such insight offers a theoretical perspective for the application and thermal stability investigation of copolymer devices under high temperature conditions. Body fluids can potentially indicate the presence of non-small cancer cells. Studying these fluids is an emerging field that could be crucial for cancer detection and monitoring treatment effectiveness. Meanwhile, the examination of fluids on a microscopic level is part of the field of microfluidics. This study focuses on the development of a total analysis system that consists of various interconnected structures that are designed to mix, classify, concentrate, and isolate particles in fluids that mimic the behavior of cancer and normal cells. Using the COMSOL Multiphysics software, the device's performance was optimized to use a pressure input of 35 kPa for water or serum and 29.4 kPa for a mixture of liquid and serum samples, which are the optimal pressure inputs. The numerical models were validated by experiments using two types of polystyrene particles, with diameters of 5 and 20 μm. Moreover, the developed system was applied to monitor the behavior of red blood cells. The microfluidic chip is capable of addressing several challenges through visual detections, including mixing tests of two fluids with similar densities, proper particle size classification using Dean flow fractionation, and single-step recovery of large, labeled particles. Finally, the collected particles were examined using an environmental scanning electron microscope to determine their size, and the results demonstrated that successful size separation was achieved, with particles around 20 μm completely separated from the smaller ones. Single zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) are promising for nanogenerators because of their excellent semiconducting and piezoelectric properties, but characterizing the latter efficiently is challenging. As reported here, an electrical breakdown strategy was used to construct single ZnO NWs with a specific length. With the high operability of a nanomanipulator in a scanning electron microscope, ZnO-NW-based two-probe and three-probe structures were constructed for fabricating AC/DC nanogenerators, respectively. For a ZnO NW, an AC output of between −15.31 mV and 5.82 mV was achieved, while for a DC nanogenerator, an output of ∼24.3 mV was realized. Also, the three-probe structure's output method was changed to verify the distribution of piezoelectric charges when a single ZnO NW is bent by a probe, and DC outputs of different amplitudes were achieved. This study provides a low-cost, highly convenient, and operational method for studying the AC/DC output characteristics of single NWs, which is beneficial for the further development of nanogenerators. Strain engineering is an alternative to chemical modification in manipulating functionalities of materials. Here, we report the lattice strain could relax the abrupt phase transition of (Ni1−xFex)1−δS and lead to an excellent negative thermal expansion (NTE) effect. The high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope and extended x-ray absorption fine structure unambiguously demonstrate that parallel Ni3S4-type nanosheets could be introduced into the matrix lattice by increasing the δ value. By forming the Ni(Fe)-S-Ni(Fe) bonds, the (1–11) plane of nanosheets epitaxially grows on the (002) plane of the hexagonal matrix. Those bonds are strong enough to bear the large lattice mismatch along the interface as the phase transition occurs. As the concentration of nanosheets increases, the weak and inhomogeneous strain in matrix lattice becomes strong and uniform, expanding the NTE window in different ways. The FurnaSEM microfurnace was installed in the chamber of a scanning electron microscope to carry out in situ experiments at high temperatures and test its limits. The microfurnace was used in combination with different types of detectors (Everhart–Thornley for the collection of secondary electrons in a high vacuum, gas secondary electron detector for the specific collection of secondary electrons in the presence of gas, and Karmen© detector for the collection of backscattered electrons at high temperature). Experiments carried out on various samples (metal alloys and ceramics) show that the microfurnace operates in both high-vacuum and low-vacuum modes. Temperature ramp rates during temperature cycles applied to the sample range from 1 to 120 °C/min (temperature rise) and 1 to 480 °C/min (controlled and natural cooling). The maximum temperature at which images were recorded up to 25 k × magnification was 1340 °C, with a residual air atmosphere of 120 Pa. The choice of a flat furnace with the sample placed directly above it has enabled innovative experiments to be carried out, such as low-voltage imaging (using a shorter working distance—up to 10 mm—than is possible with conventional furnaces), 3D imaging (by tilting the stage by up to 10°), and high-temperature backscattered electron imaging (using a dedicated detector). When conducting in situ experiments at high temperatures in a scanning electron microscope using microfurnaces, controlling the temperature of a sample of a few mm3 placed in the hot zone of the furnace can be a complex task. In most cases, the temperature of the sample is estimated by means of a thermocouple placed in the hot body of the furnace, and the assumption made is that the temperature of the furnace is the temperature of the sample. In this work, a detailed understanding of the thermal response of the sample placed in the hot zone of the furnace is proposed. Temperature differences due to contact resistance between the furnace surface and the sample, the nature of the sample, and the sample geometry are calculated with a numerical model and measured experimentally on a dedicated test bench. Three technical solutions (bonding, sandwiching, and mini-crucible) for limiting temperature differences between the furnace surface and sample are proposed and validated by numerical calculations and experimental measurements. The development of a new heating system dedicated to in situ scanning electron microscope (SEM) experimentation at high temperatures is reported. This system, called FurnaSEM, is a compact microfurnace, enabling heat treatments up to 1300 °C. The choice of materials for the microfurnace is explained. The design of the microfurnace is optimized by iterations of numerical simulations, and the thermal characteristics of the microfurnace are calculated numerically. The numerical results obtained are compared with the thermal characteristics of a manufactured microfurnace, measured on a specially developed dedicated test bench. This test bench includes a working chamber simulating a SEM chamber equipped with a thermal camera. The results obtained during various qualification tests enabled us to determine the main technical characteristics of the FurnaSEM microfurnace: temperature profiles on the sample support surface, energy consumption at high temperatures, and the range of achievable thermal cycles. Compared with continuous wave (CW), pulse wave (PW) perturbation results in a larger temperature change rate inside the cladding layer, which leads to a higher quality cladding layer. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model of laser cladding Fe60 powder was established. The multiphysics field coupling transient evolution and solute distribution under PW and CW operating modes were studied. The problem of lack of theoretical support for laser cladding process under different working modes in heat source was solved. Calculations show that at 1970 ms when the temperature is stable, the maximum temperature, flow rate, and stress under the PW mode are 2660 K, 0.34 m/s, and 354 MPa, respectively, which are smaller than those under the CW mode. The four solute distributions at stable temperature are as follows: The minimum mass fractions of Fe and Mn are 87% and 0.49% in the CW mode, and the maximum mass fractions of Cr and Ni are 11% and 5%. In the PW mode, the minimum mass fractions of Fe and Mn are 82% and 0.44%, and the maximum mass fractions of Cr and Ni are 14% and 5%. PW has a smaller heat input than CW, resulting in a smaller molten pool, so the elements in the molten pool are more fully mixed with other alloying elements. Metallographic experiments were performed using a scanning electron microscope to examine the mechanical properties on the fusion cladding layer, and the accuracy of the model was verified by combining numerical simulations with experimental studies for comparative analysis. Hydrogen-powered polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) show promising potential to power a wide range of mobile and stationary applications and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly. In PEMFCs, the oxygen transport and the water transport are essential for a long lifetime and high-performance characteristics. The diffusion media (DM), located between the bipolar plate and the catalyst-coated membrane, is a crucial component of the fuel cell that significantly affects the cell-internal processes. Usually, the DM is a two-layer material system consisting of a microporous layer based on carbon black particles coated onto a porous gas diffusion layer (e.g., carbon paper). The properties of the microporous layer regarding the water transport at high current densities and, consequently, the fuel cell's performance and lifetime can be improved by laser structuring. Within this work, different microporous layers with varying binder content and porosities were structured by locally ablating the material using ultrashort-pulsed laser radiation in the infrared wavelength range. The effect of varying process parameters was additionally investigated. Furthermore, the ablation efficiencies were calculated for increasing pulse repetition rates to qualify a process window for an industrial structuring process. The size of the micro-drillings and the heat-affected zone surrounding the hole were evaluated through topographic and microstructure analyses using a laser scanning microscope and a scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The results showed a rather small influence of the porosity and composition of the microporous layer on the ablation behavior. Because of their full compatibility with CMOS technology, HfO2-based ferroelectrics, and especially Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO), attract a lot of attention. However, the overwhelming majority of measurement techniques provides only information about the cumulative electrical response of many domains of HZO, i.e., at the macroscopic level. So far, only piezoresponse force microscopy technique was applied to visualize distinct ferroelectric domains in HZO and to analyze the local switching behavior in the microscopic level. This work introduces the possibility of using electron beam-induced current (EBIC) technique in the scanning electron microscope to visualize the gradual polarization reversal of HZO and to obtain the local polarization dynamics. We show that although the local EBIC signal is affected by surrounding domains, studying the variations in the ferroelectric response of individual domains as well as the spread of the local stiffness and local imprint is possible by this method. Besides, we show the connection between the EBIC current and an electric field across passive non-ferroelectric layers at interfaces between HZO and metal electrodes, which opens up additional opportunities to use the EBIC technique for investigations of interface-dependent properties of HZO ferroelectrics in the future. Focussed ion beam - scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) 3D examination was conducted on three standard UO2 and one Cr doped UO2 high burn-up pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel samples. This work complemented other microanalysis examination, including an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) work on the polished surface. A parallel article giving the EBSD results was submitted simultaneously. Together, they found, in all the central area of these high burn-up samples: (i) a restructuring of the initial grains into smaller sub-grains forming low angle boundaries and with crystal orientations around that of their parent grains; and (ii) intragranular bubbles mostly situated on these low angle boundaries. The FIB-SEM 3D examination showed how such inter-sub-grain bubbles start as small compact but also small lenticular bubbles, similar to typical small intergranular lenticular bubbles. With increasing burn-up, these lenticular bubbles get thicker and locally interlink to form more complex bubbles. However, no long distance networks, between the sub-grains or between the original grains, were found. Such networks could have been a path for part of the fission gases to reach the grain boundaries, the grain edges (the intersection line of three grain boundaries), and the rod free volumes. These FIB-SEM 3D examinations brought details on the intragranular and intergranular bubbles situation for each studied volume. The distribution of the intragranular bubbles according to their sizes and shapes was exposed. The central restructuring, studied in this work, is likely to play a role in the increase of the fission gas release fractions at high burn-up. Measurements of transport phenomena are constantly plagued by contact resistance, prohibiting the sample's intrinsic electrical or thermal conductivity from being accurately determined. This predicament is particularly severe in thermal transport measurements due to the inability to meet similar impedance requirements for a four-probe method used in electrical resistance measurements. Here, we invent a three-probe measurement method that makes an accurate determination of thermal conductivity possible for nanomaterials. Incorporating electron beam heating provided by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) on a diffusive thermal conductor not only quantifies the thermal contact resistance, which may introduce an error of more than 270% to a sample's thermal conductivity, but also eliminates several device uncertainties that may contribute an additional 17% error in a measurement. The method also enables local temperature measurements, revealing nanoscale structural variations unfound by SEM. Lead-free antiferroelectric AgNbO3 ceramics have garnered extensive attention due to their rapid charge/discharge capabilities and environmentally friendly nature, holding immense potential for energy storage applications. However, the practical utilization of AgNbO3 has been hindered by its low energy storage density. This study employed an A/B-site co-doping strategy, which yielded positive effects on the energy performance of AgNbO3 ceramics. By modifying the A/B-sites with equivalent amounts of Bi3+ and Y3+ ions, enhanced maximum polarization, improved breakdown field, and slimmer hysteresis loops were simultaneously achieved, as the combined effects of refined grain size, wider optical bandgap, and randomly distributed antiferroelectric nanodomains, which were verified through the scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and ultraviolet–visible spectrum. As a consequence, a high energy storage density of 5.40 J/cm3 accompanied by an energy storage efficiency of 56.5% was achieved in the Ag0.97Bi0.01Nb0.994Y0.01O3 ceramic under a relatively low electric field of 190 kV/cm. This study underscores the effectiveness of A/B-site aliovalent co-doping as a viable strategy for developing high-performance ceramic capacitors for energy storage applications. The primary goal of this study is to examine the impact of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)/alkali-activated fly ash on the fresh properties and mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The fresh properties, known as the workability of SCC characteristics, were determined using the U-box, V-funnel, J-ring, and L-box tests. The M30 grade SCC containing superplasticizer of 0.86 wt. % of cement is replaced with 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 40% of alkali-activated fly ash. On days 7, 14, and 28 after curing, the compressive strength and the splitting tensile strength of the SCC were examined. The study was further extended to evaluate the behavior of reinforced concrete beams containing fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag, whose size was 1200 × 100 × 150 mm3, under flexure loading. Based on the test results, it was found that the increase in the replacement of cement with alkali-activated fly ash increased the workability in the SCC. With the addition of superplasticizers, the SCC gained much more workability than conventional concrete containing no superplasticizer. The mechanical properties of 10% and 15% activated fly ash in Portland cement provided the maximum strength for the SCC at different ages of curing. The maximum first crack load and maximum ultimate flexure loading of the reinforced concrete beam containing 10% activated fly ash by weight of cement were greater than those of the control concrete beam. The use of aluminum alloys in automobiles is expanding, and the potential for additional increases is significant. Further growth will be determined by improvements in material qualities for existing applications or the discovery of new applications. Alloy A-356 (LM25) is commonly employed for high-quality alloy wheel rims in various motor vehicles, constituting 40% of global car usage. This study introduces 0.2% Cu into the Al–Si–Mg alloy system to enhance the mechanical properties. The alloy blend is cast into a metal mold, subjected to a 4-h cure at 540 °C, quenched with water, and precipitation hardened for 12 h at 1800 °C. Optical and scanning electron microscopes are utilized to analyze the alkali microstructure. The mechanical properties of alloyed and unalloyed castings, including hardness and tensile test results, are examined in untreated and heat-treated states. Fracture surfaces of tensile specimens are scrutinized. Intermetallic compounds formed during solidification are studied using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis. The tensile strength under unalloyed (LM25) and alloyed (LM25 + 0.2 wt. % Cu) conditions before and after heat treatment [(72, 165.4 and 88.3, 237.1) and (78, 179.6 and 98, 252.9, respectively)] shows a significant increase. Integrating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a polymer matrix can significantly modify its physical properties, providing that the challenges associated with CNT dispersion are successfully resolved. In this work, we investigate the enhancement of the dielectric properties of silicone when multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are introduced to its polymer matrix as a filler in the frequency range from 0.5 to 20 GHz. An optimized procedure is used to prepare nanocomposites with MWCNTs concentrations by weight of 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%. The investigated dielectric properties for the prepared nanocomposites are the real dielectric constant ɛ′, the imaginary dielectric constant ɛ″, the loss tangent tan δ, and the AC conductivity σAC. The dispersion of the MWCNTs in the silicone matrix is confirmed using the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the scanning electron microscope. This study shows that the dielectric properties of the nanocomposite are enhanced as the MWCNT's concentration is increased over the entire frequency range. For example, the enhancement in ɛ′ value was from 3.2 up to 21.6 at 0.5 GHz and from 2.5 to 10.6 at 20 GHz as the concentration increased from 0% to 2.0%. For the ɛ″ value, the enhancement was from less than 0.1 to 8.6 at 0.5 GHz and to 2.0 at 20 GHz, respectively. Based on the obtained tanδ values, the nanocomposites with MWCNTs of 0.5% and 1.0% can be classified as low-loss dielectrics, while the other nanocomposites with MWCNTs of 1.5% and 2.0% are classified as lossy dielectrics. The damage impact of mechanical shocks on stator bar insulation is a key factor in high-voltage motor accidents. This study conducted electrical aging acceleration and breakdown experiments on damaged stator insulating materials to understand failure causes and evaluation methods. The relationship between sample defect area and depth and electrical properties was analyzed, along with the morphology of the damaged surface using a scanning electron microscope. Results show that the defect area correlates with impact mode but does not directly impact electrical performance. Effective insulation thickness is positively linked to electrical performance. By applying ultrasonic treatment to ZL205A aluminum alloy melt containing different Cd contents and then using a tensile test, a scanning electron microscope experiment, and a metallographic experiment, the influence of ultrasonic treatment to ZL205A aluminum alloy melt on the properties of aluminum–copper alloy with different Cd contents in the liquid phase high-temperature region was studied. The effect of ultrasonic treatment on the solidification structure of ZL205A aluminum alloy was investigated. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the form of Cd and the solid solution rate of the aluminum alloy with different Cd contents in ultrasonic-assisted casting. However, the effect of ultrasonic waves on the high-temperature liquid phase of the melt of ZL205A aluminum alloy can effectively reduce the porosity defects in the solidification structure of the casting, refine the solidification structure, and make the structure more uniform. The ultrasonic cavitation effect can promote the formation and uniform distribution of Al–3Ti and improve the nucleation rate, and the effect can continue after heat treatment. This can solve the problem that increasing Cd content in ZL205A greatly reduces the toughness of castings while increasing the strength. The sample with a Cd content of 0.20% and with ultrasonic treatment has the highest strength, the average tensile strength is 475.5 MPa, and the yield strength is 381.75 MPa. We reported here on the fabrication and characterization of a smart titanium alloy bolt based on a high-frequency piezoelectric thin-film sensor. The thin-film sensor was directly deposited on a titanium alloy bolt head with radio frequency magnetron sputtering and characterized by a scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope. The ultrasonic characteristics of the smart bolt, which include a pure and broad frequency spectrum peaked at 14.81 MHz, high measurement accuracy below 3%, and high repeatability free from some interference from bolt detection position change, were fully characterized. No obvious frequency shift was observed with the increase in axial preload. Based on the mono-wave method [TOF (time of flight) of longitudinal mode wave], TOF change increased linearly with preload force in the range of 0–20 kN. With the increase in temperature from 22 to 150 °C, the TOF linearly increases while the longitudinal wave velocity linearly decreases. With this experimental study, ZrO2/B4C/Al2O3/SiC ceramics in different weight ratios were added to 99.5% pure aluminum and composites were produced by vacuum infiltration, which is very rare in the literature. It is aimed to investigate how different ceramics will affect the technical properties of an aluminum composite. First, scanning electron microscope images were taken to examine their microstructures, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analyses were performed. In addition, x-ray diffraction analyses of phase structures were performed. Then, the densities of the composite structures were measured. In the last stage of the experiments, hardness measurement, bending strength, and abrasive wear amount tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties of the composite structures. According to the data obtained, a relatively homogeneous structure was obtained up to 10% of the ceramic particles in the structure. It was observed that thermal damage did not occur in the composite structures and no significant phase changes occurred. The highest infiltration distance was obtained from B4C-reinforced samples, and the lowest infiltration distances were obtained from ZrO2-reinforced samples. Ceramic reinforcement elements have reduced the density values of composite structures. With the increase in the ratio of ceramic reinforcement particles, the hardness values of the composites increased and the flexural strength values decreased. In the abrasive wear tests, the least wear loss was obtained from SiC-reinforced samples and the highest wear loss was obtained from ZrO2-reinforced samples. When the composites were evaluated according to their microstructure and mechanical strength, the best results were obtained with SiC and then Al2O3, B4C, and ZrO2 reinforcements, respectively. It has been concluded that SiC, Al2O3, B4C, and ZrO2 reinforcement elements in Al 1050-based composites produced by vacuum infiltration have a positive effect on most of the mechanical properties and a negative effect on some of them. Near-stoichiometric chromium diboride films were subject to in situ annealing inside a scanning transmission electron microscope to access the thermal behavior of the film and embedded structural planar defects. Independent of films' stoichiometry, the planar defects were unaffected by the applied heat treatments. On the contrary, the interfaces between the boron-rich tissue phase and the CrB2 phase were reshaped in the overstoichometric CrB2 film. At high temperatures, diffusion of contact metal species (platinum) from the focused ion beam sample preparation was triggered, with subsequent migration onto the sample. This resulted in the formation of metal-rich regions as directly observed and characterized at the atomic level. The changes in mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced plastic cross-ply laminates as a result of hydrothermal aging were studied theoretically. The composite specimens have been immersed in distilled water at 25, 40, and 70 °C for 60 days for aging testing. Based on Fick's law and the Arrhenius theorem, the moisture absorption data under different environments was analyzed, and the method for determining the diffusivity and the equilibrium moisture content was obtained. The relationship model between the moisture absorption behavior of the composite material and the ambient temperature was proposed and verified by finite element analysis. The mechanical behavior of the composites was studied by tensile, compression, and three-point bending tests. Under the condition of ultimate moisture absorption, the tensile, compressive, and bending strengths of the composite decreased by 31.663%, 12.948%, and 26.985%, respectively. A variety of empirical models were used for data analysis, which confirmed the strong correlation between strength degradation and moisture absorption of composite cross-ply laminates. The scanning electron microscope observation results of different moisture absorption levels showed that matrix cracking and fiber/matrix interface debonding caused by moisture absorption are the fundamental reasons for the strength degradation of the composites. In this study, basalt fibers (BFs) and nano-silica (NS) were innovatively combined to reinforce recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) to prepare recycled aggregate concrete (named NBRAC) with better mechanical and microstructural properties as an alternative to ordinary concrete. Different NBRAC specimens were prepared by adjusting the contents of NS and BF; the damage mechanism and mechanical properties of NBRAC were investigated; and the compressive, split tensile, and flexural strengths of NBRAC were evaluated. The microstructure of NBRAC was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy observation. The results showed that the densification of NBRAC was improved under the condition of 50% RA substitution rate and that its compressive, split tensile, and flexural strengths were increased by 6.8%, 16.3%, and 32.7%, respectively, compared with that of natural concrete, which proved that the method was feasible for the preparation of high-performance RAC. The use of slag-based alkali-activated concrete (AAC) could effectively address the issues of resource extraction and carbon emissions caused by traditional Portland cement. In this study, the effects of the fly ash content, water–binder ratio, and alkali activation modulus on the early mechanical properties of AAC were investigated. A total of 105 cube specimens (35 sets) were designed and subjected to compressive strength tests, scanning electron microscope tests, and x-ray diffraction composition analysis. The results indicated that excellent early strength was observed in AAC, with a compressive strength reaching ∼90% of the 28th day strength before 14 days. An increase in the fly ash content and a decrease in the water–binder ratio significantly improved the compressive strength within the same age period. The impact of a lower alkaline activation modulus on strength was found to be insignificant. Based on the experimental results, a calculation method and a constitutive model for early strength were proposed, and the theoretical values exhibited a high level of agreement with the measured values. This paper presents a novel piezoelectric-driven nanoindentation system for a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an improved analog compensation (IAC) method. This system mainly consists of a piezoelectric-driven indenter head, a rectangle-shaped transducer, and a nanopositioner module. Compared with the state-of-the-art piezoelectric-driven nanoindentation system with a circle-shaped transducer, the proposed nanoindentation system is capable of multi-direction operation inside a SEM with a rectangle-shaped transducer. Self-matched semiconductor strain gauges are selected as the position sensor for the piezoelectric-actuator. The Wheatstone bridge output voltage cannot achieve a zero temperature coefficient because the temperature coefficients of self-matched semiconductor strain gauge pairs become significantly different from each other after installation in practice. An IAC method is proposed to compensate the temperature coefficients further. Compared with the existing analog compensation method, the IAC method solves the problem of amplifier saturation and improves the sensitivity of the self-matched semiconductor strain gauge pairs position sensor by 27%. The present study focused on the environmentally friendly preparation, characterization, and certain biological activities of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) made with the Gundelia tournefortii (kenger) leaf extract. The results from devices such as transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive x-ray spectrophotometer, and Fourier scanning electron microscope reveal the structures of nanoparticles. After an hour, the greatest surface plasmon resonance was discovered at 532.15 nm. The mean cubic crystallite size was calculated using the powder x-ray diffraction model and was found to be 23.53 nm. It was noted that the produced Au-NPs had spherical forms and hexagonal dimensions and ranged in size from 5 to 40 nm. The minimum inhibitory concentration and a colorimetric method for determining cell metabolic activity test, respectively, were used to investigate the suppressive effects of Au-NPs on the growth of pathogenic bacteria and healthy and cancer cell lines. Materials research studies are dealing with a large number of images, which can now be facilitated via image-based machine learning techniques. In this article, we review recent progress of machine learning-driven image recognition and analysis for the materials and chemical domains. First, the image-based machine learning that facilitates the property prediction of chemicals or materials is discussed. Second, the analysis of nanoscale images including those from a scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope is discussed, which is followed by the discussion about the identification of molecular structures via image recognition. Subsequently, the image-based machine learning works to identify and classify various practical materials such as metal, ceramics, and polymers are provided, and the image recognition for a range of real-scenario device applications such as solar cells is provided in detail. Finally, suggestions and future outlook for image-based machine learning for classification and prediction tasks in the materials and chemical science are presented. This article highlights the importance of the integration of the image-based machine learning method into materials and chemical science and calls for a large-scale deployment of image-based machine learning methods for prediction and classification of images in materials and chemical science. The fluid transport in porous media is a critical property for oil and gas exploitation, construction engineering, and environmental protection. It is profoundly influenced by pore geometry and mineral properties. Currently, the Kozeny–Carman equation serves as the permeability prediction equation for porous media, established on the circular pores model. However, it fails to fully account for the impact of pore shape and mineral properties of the soil, leading to significant deviations between predicted and measured soil permeability results. In this paper, based on scanning electron microscope image and mercury intrusion porosimetry, the pores were divided into circular pores and narrow slit pores according to the ratios of pore area and circumference. Then, the quantitative expression of the two types of pores and their connectivity and tortuosity were given, and the circular and narrow slit composite pore model was used to describe the soil pore. Subsequently, the electrostatic potential of pore water was calculated by the Poisson–Boltzmann equation to consider the adsorption effect of minerals on pore water. Combined with the Navier–Stokes equation, the permeability prediction equation considering pore geometry, pore connectivity, and tortuosity and mineral properties was established. Finally, the experimental results illustrated that the theoretical prediction results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The operando hydrogen microscope is an original apparatus that has been developed to visualize the time-dependent permeation of hydrogen through a sample. This apparatus is developed based on an ultrahigh vacuum scanning electron microscope (UHV SEM). The system consists of a lens system to focus ions produced by electron-stimulated desorption (ESD), an ion detector optimized for ESD-signal detection, and a two-dimensional measurement program synchronized with the position information of the electron beam. The developed detectors and electrostatic lenses enable highly sensitive detection of the ions. In this paper, we show the details of the instrumentation of the operando hydrogen microscope. We have succeeded in recording hydrogen and deuterium flowing from the rear of metals to the surface as a series of time-lapse images, showing the time-dependent changes in the surface distribution of hydrogen and deuterium. Deuterium permeation through the metal sample was dynamically visualized at the surface by the two-dimensional mapping of the desorbed ions induced by scanning electron beam irradiation. Using a scanning electron microscope, we irradiate graphene drums with electrons at an energy of 20 keV and a dosage of about 1.58 × 1017 electrons/cm2. The drums consist of graphene exfoliated in ambient air over holes having a diameter of 4.6 μm and etched into an SiO2 substrate. After irradiation, we observe that the drum's suspended monolayer (ML) region has a ratio of the Raman D peak height, ID, to the Raman G peak height, IG, as high as 6.3. In contrast, the supported ML on the SiO2 substrate has an ID/IG ratio of 0.49. Previous studies have shown that graphene drums containing air can leak in a vacuum at a low rate. We attribute the high ID/IG ratio of the suspended ML to the air that may be in the drums. We propose that the air produces much adsorbed water on the ML, resulting in a high average defect density during irradiation. We present Raman maps of the full-width-at-half maximum, position, and height of the G, 2D, D, and D' peaks before and after irradiation and maps of ID/IG and ID/ID'. We anneal the drums at temperatures from 50 to 215 °C and find that ID/IG significantly reduces to 0.42. The annealing data are analyzed using an Arrhenius plot. We also find that ID/ID' depends on annealing temperature and has values ≥8, in the range expected for sp3 defects, for ID/IG ≤ 3.9. Lithium batteries are promising techniques for renewable energy storage attributing to their excellent cycle performance, relatively low cost, and guaranteed safety performance. The performance of the LiFePO4 (LFP) battery directly determines the stability and safety of energy storage power station operation, and the properties of the internal electrode materials are the core and key to determine the quality of the battery. In this work, two kinds of commercial LFP batteries were studied by analyzing the electrical properties and material properties of the electrodes. After performing the rate and cycle performance tests of the battery cell, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, and inductively coupled plasma were used to explore the performance of electrode materials to establish the correlation between the battery performance and the electrochemical reaction law of the internal materials and further to judge the influence of the key material properties on the battery performance. Laminar-type spherical diffraction gratings overcoated with carbon-based materials were designed, fabricated, and evaluated for the purpose of enhancing the analytical sensitivity of the flat-field spectrograph in a vacuum ultraviolet region of 35–110 eV. As the design benchmark for numerical calculations, diffraction efficiency (DE) and spectral flux, which are defined by the product of the DE and numerical aperture and correlate with the analytical sensitivity of the spectrograph, were used. To simplify the feasibility study on the overcoating effects, we assumed a laminar-type grating having a grating constant of 1/1000 mm and coated with a Au layer of 30.0 nm thickness and an incidence angle of 84.0°. The optimized groove depth and duty ratio were 30.0 nm and 0.3, respectively. In addition, the optimum thicknesses of the overcoating layer were 44, 46, 24, and 30 nm for B4C, C, diamond-like-carbon, and SiC, respectively. Based on these results, we have fabricated a varied-line-spacing holographic grating overcoated with B4C with a thickness of 47 nm. For the experimental evaluation, we used the light source of Mg-L and Al-L emissions excited by the electron beam generated from an electron microscope, an objective flat-field spectrograph, and a CCD imaging detector. The experimental results showed that the spectrograph employing a new grating overcoated with the B4C layer indicated almost the same spectral resolution and 2.9–4.2 times higher analytical sensitivity compared with those obtained with a previously designed Au-coated grating having a grating constant of 1/1200 mm and used at an incidence of 86.0°. To address the challenges of accurate metrology of height and sidewall angle (SWA) of three-dimensional structures with critical dimension scanning electron microscopy, general modeling and algorithms based on tilted electron beam technology and the corresponding application skills are proposed, and the validity and error accuracy are evaluated as well. Three typical structures, the trapezoid, inverted trapezoid, and step, are investigated with Monte Carlo simulation. The maximum derivative method is used to extract key parameters from the secondary electron linescan. Lateral field emission devices have been characterized before and after ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. Two types of planar device structures, diode and bowtie, were studied. These nanoscale devices have 9–15 nm tip-to-tip (bowtie) or tip-to-collector (diode) dimensions with the tips fabricated from Au/Ti. Typical currents of 2–5 nA per tip at 6 V were measured. It was observed that after UV exposure, the collected current was reduced by >28% for the case of a bowtie device; whereas the current was reduced by >39% for the case of a diode device. This reduction can be attributed to water vapor desorption on the dielectric surface between the structures, which in turn reduces surface leakage. The Fowler–Nordheim plot showed a straighter line after UV exposure. After the I-V test, the UV-exposed devices were placed on lifetime tests in a vacuum of <10−8 Torr and were biased at 5 V DC. After 2600 h, an abrupt current decrease was observed: ∼25% for the case of the bowtie and ∼28% for the case of the diode device. This paper describes the influence of vacuum annealing on the mechanical characteristics of silicon (Si) nanowires (NWs) fabricated using focused ion beam (FIB) technologies. Two types of Si NWs having a cross-sectional one-side length or diameter ranging from 19 to 447 nm are prepared using the direct milling and Ga ion doping functions of FIB. The Si NWs prepared are annealed at 400–700 °C in high vacuum for 10 min, followed by quasi-static uniaxial tensile testing using a microelectromechanical system based tensile test system in a scanning electron microscope. All the Si NWs fracture in a brittle manner. Young's modulus of submicrometer-sized Si NWs shows both annealing and specimen size influences in the range from 120 to 170 GPa, whereas that of nano-sized Si NWs shows only annealing influence in the range from 60 to 110 GPa. Tensile strength scatters greatly, ranging from 1.0 to 7.2 GPa, which increases with increasing the NW size. A transmission electron microscope and an atomic force microscope suggest that, by annealing, recrystallization happens in the damaged layer introduced by FIB milling and the NW surface morphology changes due to its recrystallization and gallium (Ga) ion evaporation. Dust-mitigating surfaces typically consist of high-aspect-ratio structures that separate particles from resting on the bulk material, thereby limiting adhesion due to short-range van der Waals forces. These surfaces can find uses in solar-panel coatings and a variety of dust-resistant optics. The current method for quantifying surface contamination is optical microscopy, but this method is inadequate for observing particles at the submicrometer scale due to the diffraction limit. Furthermore, regardless of the microscopy technique, particle identification becomes problematic as the particle contaminates approach the same length scale of the surface structures. In this work, we demonstrate a method to identify micro-/nanoparticle contaminates on nanostructured surfaces using electron microscopy and image processing. This approach allows the characterization of particles that approach the length scale of the surface structures. Image processing, including spectrum filters and edge detection, is used to remove the periodic features of the surface nanostructure to omit them from the particle counting. The detection of these small particles using electron microscopy leads to an average of 5.62 particles/100 μm2 detected compared to 0.63 particles/100 μm2 detected for the traditional confocal optical detection method. Beyond dust-mitigation nanostructures, the demonstrated particle detection technique can find applications in nanobiology, the detection of ice nucleation on a structured surface, and semiconductor mask inspections. Plasma etching effects, such as microtrenching and bowing, negatively impact device performance. Modeling of these effects at nanoscale is challenging, and theoretical and experimental investigations are highly desired to gain insights into mechanisms. In this paper, we propose a new plasma etching model based on Monte Carlo simulations with a cellular method. This model considers reactions and ion-enhanced etching and consists of a novel particle reflection algorithm, which is a key factor impacting the etch profile. This model reproduces the adjustable microtrenching and bowing effects in periodic dense trenches with tens of nanometer dimensions. Through experimental observation and auxiliary numerical simulation, this investigation studies the different types of grain refinement of 5754 aluminum alloy laser beam welding by applying a transverse oscillating magnetic field. Scanning electron microscope results have proved that the application of a magnetic field can reduce the average crystal branch width and increase its number. The interaction between the induced eddy current generated by the Seebeck effect and the applied external magnetic field produces a Lorentz force, which is important for the increase in the number of crystal branches. Based on the theory of dendrite fragmentation and the magnetic field-induced branches increment, the grain size reduction caused by the magnetic field is studied. Furthermore, the effects of the magnetic field are analyzed by combining a phase field method model and simulations of nucleation and grain growth. The grain distribution and average grain size after welding verify the reliability of the model. In addition, the introduction of a magnetic field can increase the number of periodic three-dimensional solidification patterns. In the intersection of two periods of solidification patterns, the metal can be re-melted and then re-solidified, which prevents the grains, that have been solidified and formed previously, from further growth and generates some small cellular grains in the new fusion line. The magnetic field increases the building frequency of these solidification structures and thus promotes this kind of grain refinement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate simulations of the shock response of heterogeneous energetic (HE) materials require closure models, which account for energy localization in the micro-structure. In a multi-scale framework, closure is provided by reaction rate models that account for ignition and growth of hotspots, allowing for prediction of the overall macro-scale sensitivity of a HE material. In the present meso-informed ignition and growth (MES-IG) model, the reaction rate is expressed as a function of shock pressure and morphology of the void field in a pressed energetic material. In MES-IG, the void morphology is quantified in terms of a limited number of parameters: viz., overall porosity, void size, and shape (aspect ratio and orientation). In this paper, we quantify the effects of arbitrary variations in void shapes on meso-scale energy deposition rates. A collection of voids of arbitrary shapes is extracted from scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of real, pressed HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) samples and classified into groups based on their similarity in shapes. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed on the highly contorted "real" void shapes, and the calculated hotspot ignition and growth rates are compared with values predicted by the MES-IG. It is found that while the parameterization of complex void morphologies in terms of orientation and aspect ratio gives fairly good agreement between DNS and MES-IG reaction rates, the intricate details of highly complex void shapes impact hotspot characteristics to a significant extent. This work suggests possible improvements for the prediction of reaction rate in the energetic microstructure by adopting a more detailed description of shapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Piezoresistance, the change of electrical resistance due to applied mechanical strain, has been characterized for films in tension or bending. However, measuring the compressive piezoresistance of films remains a challenge because the in-plane compression often results in macroscopic buckling and kinking, leading to localization of strain. Here, we overcame this issue via a newly developed method to calculate the compressive piezoresistance of films by measuring the change of resistance in situ under tensile and bending stresses. A linear fit was applied to the experimental tensile piezoresistive response and a quadratic fit was applied to the bending piezoresistive response. The experimental bending response was mathematically decomposed into its tensile and compressive components. The compressive response was then isolated by subtracting the tensile response from the bending response. In this study, the method is applied to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film specimens. For rGO films, the compressive piezoresistance was found to be much greater than the tensile piezoresistance. Scanning electron microscope images revealed that extensive damage occurred on the compressive side of the bending specimen, resulting in a large increase in resistivity. We anticipate that our study will be adapted to applications that require mechanically reliable, flexible, and highly conductive materials, such as flexible electronics and structural energy and power. We have demonstrated that intense 7-fs, ∼810-nm laser pulses can produce a much finer periodic nanostructure on a diamond-like carbon film through ablation in air than that formed with intense 100-fs, ∼800-nm laser pulses. The minimum period size is ∼60 nm, corresponding to ∼1/13 of the center wavelength. To understand the physical mechanism responsible for the finer nanostructuring, we have observed a bonding structural change in the nanostructure with micro-Raman spectroscopy and a scanning transmission electron microscope. It has been found that the modified layer thickness with the 7-fs pulses is much thinner than that with the 100-fs pulses. The results show that the 7-fs pulses create a few-nm-thick layer with high-density electrons and excite short-range surface plasmon polaritons, which have a large wave number around the layer and induce the plasmonic near-field nanoablation. The period size estimated by using a model target reproduces well the observed size of nanostructures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
