Recently, two rich and exciting research fields, layered two-dimensional (2D) materials and metamaterials, have started overlapping. Metamaterials are artificial, engineered materials with broad metaphotonic prospects such as negative refraction, perfect lensing, subwavelength imaging, and cloaking. The possibility of achieving metaphotonic properties using metamaterials based on layered 2D materials has been extensively exploited. Because they are highly tunable and adjustable with the ease of micro- and nanofabrication, 2D materials exhibit diverse optical properties such as natural negative refraction, natural anisotropic behavior, and even hyperbolic dispersion. A combination of 2D materials with conventional metamaterials promises a variety of prospective applications. In this review, we illustrate how the concept of metamaterials and their associated metaphotonic capabilities are naturally born in 2D materials. The multifunctionality of 2D materials may enable the manufacture of novel optical devices that work in a broad frequency range, from visible to terahertz, with particularly low loss, high speed, gated tunability, and miniaturized sizes. This new area of research links the fields of photonics, optoelectronics, and plasmonics with that of metamaterials and may provide insights to future innovations for 2D-material-inspired metaphotonic devices. Low-dimensional, strongly anisotropic nanomaterials can support hyperbolic phonon polaritons, which feature strong light-matter interactions that can enhance their capabilities in sensing and metrology tasks. In this work, we report hyperbolic polaritonic rulers, based on microscale α-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO 3 ) waveguides and resonators suspended over an ultraflat gold substrate, which exhibit near-field polaritonic characteristics that are exceptionally sensitive to device geometry. Using scanning near-field optical microscopy, we show that these systems support strongly confined image polariton modes that exhibit ideal antisymmetric gap polariton dispersion, which is highly sensitive to air gap dimensions and can be described and predicted using a simple analytic model. Dielectric constants used for modeling are accurately extracted using near-field optical measurements of α-MoO 3 waveguides in contact with the gold substrate. We also find that for nanoscale resonators supporting in-plane Fabry-Perot modes, the mode order strongly depends on the air gap dimension in a manner that enables a simple readout of the gap dimension with nanometer precision.

The full manipulation of intrinsic properties of electromagnetic waves has become the central target in various modern optical technologies. Optical metasurfaces have been suggested for a complete control of light-matter interaction with subwavelength structures, and they have been explored widely in the past decade for creating next-generation multifunctional flat-optics devices. The current studies of metasurfaces have reached a mature stage where common materials, basic optical physics, and conventional engineering tools have been explored extensively for various applications such as light bending, metalenses, metaholograms, and many others. A natural question is where the future research on metasurfaces will be going: Quo vadis, metasurfaces? In this Mini Review, we provide perspectives on the future developments of optical metasurfaces. Specifically, we highlight recent progresses on hybrid metasurfaces employing low-dimensional materials and discuss biomedical, computational, and quantum applications of metasurfaces, followed by discussions of challenges and foreseeing the future of metasurface physics and engineering.

Surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) in polar dielectrics offer new opportunities for infrared nanophotonics. However, bulk SPhPs inherently propagate isotropically with limited photon confinement, and how to collectively realize ultralarge confinement, in-plane hyperbolicity, and unidirectional propagation remains elusive. Here, we report an approach to solve the aforementioned issues of bulk SPhPs in one go by constructing a heterostructural interface between biaxial van der Waals material (e.g., α-MoO 3 ) and bulk polar dielectric (e.g., SiC, AlN, and GaN). Because of anisotropy-oriented mode couplings, the hybridized SPhPs with a large confinement factor (>100) show in-plane hyperbolicity that has been switched to the orthogonal direction as compared to that in natural α-MoO 3 . More interestingly, this proof of concept allows steerable and unidirectional polariton excitation by suspending α-MoO 3 on patterned SiC air cavities. Our finding exemplifies a generalizable framework to manipulate the flow of nanolight in many other hybrid systems consisting of anisotropic materials and polar dielectrics.

Optical activity, demonstrating the chiral light-matter interaction, has attracted tremendous attention in both fundamental theoretical research and advanced applications of high-efficiency enantioselective sensing and next-generation chiroptical spectroscopic techniques. However, conventional chiroptical responses are normally limited in large assemblies of chiral materials by circularly polarized light, exhibiting extremely weak chiroptical signals in a single chiral nanostructure. Here, we demonstrate that an alternative chiral freedom of light-orbital angular momentum-can be utilized for generating strong helical dichroism in single chiral nanostructures. The helical dichroism by monochromatic vortex beams can unambiguously distinguish the intrinsic chirality of nanostructures, in an excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The single planar-chiral nanostructure can exhibit giant helical dichroism of ∼20% at the visible wavelength. The vortex-dependent helical dichroism, expanding to single nanostructures and two-dimensional space, has implications for high-efficiency chiroptical detection of planar-chiral nanostructures in chiral optics and nanophotonic systems.

Recent advances in twistronics of low-dimensional materials, such as bilayer graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, have enabled a plethora of unusual phenomena associated with moiré physics. However, several of these effects require demanding manipulation of superlattices at the atomic scale, such as the careful control of rotation angle between two closely spaced atomic lattices. Here, we study moiré hyperbolic plasmons in pairs of hyperbolic metasurfaces (HMTSs), unveiling analogous phenomena at the mesoscopic scale. HMTSs are known to support confined surface waves collimated toward specific directions determined by the metasurface dispersion. By rotating two evanescently coupled HMTSs with respect to one another, we unveil rich dispersion engineering, topological transitions at magic angles , broadband field canalization, and plasmon spin-Hall phenomena. These findings open remarkable opportunities to advance metasurface optics, enriching it with moiré physics and twistronic concepts.

Meta-lens represents a promising solution for optical communications and information processing owing to its miniaturization capability and desirable optical properties. Here, spin Hall meta-lens is demonstrated to manipulate photonic spin-dependent splitting induced by spin-orbital interaction in transverse and longitudinal directions simultaneously at visible wavelengths, with low dispersion and more than 90% diffraction efficiency. The broadband dielectric spin Hall meta-lens is achieved by integrating two geometric phase lenses with different functionalities into one single dynamic phase lens, which manifests the ultracompact, portable, and polarization-dependent features. The broadband spin Hall meta-lens may find important applications in imaging, sensing, and multifunctional spin photonics devices.
