Craniodental ontogenetic analyses on notoungulates are scarce. Several well-preserved specimens of the Eocene species Coquenia bondi allow for the first ontogenetic study in a Palaeogene leontiniid notoungulate. We studied five almost complete skulls of C. bondi representing three different ontogenetic stages. Cranial ontogeny indicates negative allometry for most of the variables related to the brain and sense organs, with thicker postorbital constriction and braincase breadth in juveniles. The rostrum grows isometrically in length, with positive allometry in height and negative in anterior width. Isometry is recovered for the palatal length and the upper postcanine length, both variables correlated with the longitudinal growth of the splanchnocranium. Other ontogenetic difference is the stouter and sigmoid zygomatic arch in adults, with its posterior root shifted dorsally accompanying the modification of the basicranial angle. Cranial growth of C. bondi is similar to that of Nesodon imbricatus, sharing four coefficients with close values. Molar eruption sequence is anteroposterior, whereas the deciduous premolars are substituted posteroanteriorly. In the juvenile, dentine in M2 is already exposed on the occlusal surface before wear, but the enamel covers the entire crown in m2 of the advanced juvenile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sense of taste is mediated primarily by taste buds on the tongue. These multicellular sensory organs are induced, patterned and become innervated during embryogenesis such that a functional taste system is present at birth when animals begin to feed. While taste buds have been considered ectodermal appendages, this is only partly accurate as only fungiform taste buds in the anterior tongue arise from the ectoderm. Taste buds found in the posterior tongue actually derive from endoderm. Nonetheless, both anterior and posterior buds are functionally similar, despite their disparate embryonic origins. Food presents a multisensory experience, with visual, taste, and olfactory cues being important in allowing an animal to determine the safety and nutritional value of a given substance. Texture, however, remains a surprisingly unexplored aspect, despite providing key information about the state of the food through properties such as hardness, liquidity, and granularity. Food perception is achieved by specialised sensory neurons, which themselves are defined by the receptor genes they express. While it was assumed that sensory neurons respond to one or few closely related stimuli, more recent findings challenge this notion and support evidence that certain sensory neurons are more broadly tuned. In the Drosophila taste system, gustatory neurons respond to cues of opposing hedonic valence or to olfactory cues. Here, we identified that larvae ingest and navigate towards specific food substrate hardnesses and probed the role of gustatory organs in this behaviour. By developing a genetic tool targeting specifically gustatory organs, we show that these organs are major contributors for evaluation of food hardness and ingestion decision-making. We find that ablation of gustatory organs not only results in loss of chemosensation, but also navigation and ingestion preference to varied substrate hardnesses. Furthermore, we show that certain neurons in the primary taste organ exhibit varied and concurrent physiological responses to mechanical and multimodal stimulation. We show that individual neurons house independent mechanisms for multiple sensory modalities, challenging assumptions about capabilities of sensory neurons. We propose that further investigations, across the animal kingdom, may reveal higher sensory complexity than currently anticipated. Sensing food is a complex multisensory experience. Low-temperature (LT) stress seriously affects the distribution, seedling survival, and grain yield of maize. At the seedling emergence stage, maize's coleoptile is one of the most sensitive organs in sensing LT signaling and, in general, it can envelop young leaves to protect them from LT damage. In addition, brassinolides (BRs) have been shown to enhance LT tolerance from various species, but the effects of BRs on coleoptiles in maize seedlings under LT stress are unclear. Therefore, in this study, the pre-cultured coleoptiles of Zheng58 seedlings were treated with or without 2.0 μM 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) at 25 °C and 10 °C environments for five days to analyze their physiological and transcriptomic changes. Physiological analysis showed that a 10°C LT stress increased the content of glucose (0.43 mg g−1 FW), sucrose (0.45 mg g−1 FW), and starch (0.76 mg g−1 FW) of Zheng58 coleoptiles compared to a 25°C environment. After the coleoptiles were exposed to a 2.0 μM EBR application under 10°C temperature for five days, the contents of these three sugars continued to increase, and reached 2.68 mg g−1 FW, 4.64 mg g−1 FW, and 9.27 mg g−1 FW, respectively, indicating that sugar signaling and metabolism played key roles in regulating LT tolerance in the coleoptiles of maize seedlings. Meanwhile, a transcriptome analysis showed that 84 and 15 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in the sucrose and starch metabolism and photosynthesis pathways, respectively, and multiple DEGs involved in these pathways were significantly up-regulated under LT stress and EBR stimulation. Further analysis speculated that the four DEGs responsible for sucrose-phosphate synthetase (SPS, i.e., Zm00001d048979, probable sucrose-phosphate synthase 5 and Zm00001d012036, sucrose-phosphate synthase 1), sucrose synthase (SUS, Zm00001d029091, sucrose synthase 2 and Zm00001d029087, sucrose synthase 4) were crucial nodes that could potentially link photosynthesis and other unknown pathways to form the complex interaction networks of maize LT tolerance. In conclusion, our findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of exogenous EBR in enhancing LT tolerance of maize seedlings and identified potential candidate genes to be used for LT tolerance breeding in maize. Among contributors to diffusible signaling are portal systems which join two capillary beds through connecting veins. Portal systems allow diffusible signals to be transported in high concentrations directly from one capillary bed to the other without dilution in the systemic circulation. Two portal systems have been identified in the brain. The first was discovered almost a century ago and connects the median eminence to the anterior pituitary gland. The second was discovered a few years ago and links the suprachiasmatic nucleus to the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis, a sensory circumventricular organ (CVO). Sensory CVOs bear neuronal receptors for sensing signals in the fluid milieu. They line the surface of brain ventricles and bear fenestrated capillaries thereby lacking blood–brain barriers. It is not known whether the other sensory CVOs, namely the subfornical organ (SFO), and area postrema (AP) form portal neurovascular connections with nearby parenchymal tissue. To preserve the integrity of the vasculature of CVOs and their adjacent neuropil, we combined iDISCO clearing and light‐sheet microscopy to acquire volumetric images of blood vessels and traced the vasculature in two experiments. In the first, the whole brain vasculature was registered to the Allen Brain Atlas in order to identify the nuclei to which the SFO and AP are attached. In the second study, regionally specified immunolabeling was used to identify the attachment sites and vascular connections between the AP, and the SFO to their respective parenchymal attachment sites. There are venous portal pathways linking the capillary vessels of the SFO and the posterior septal nuclei, namely the septofimbrial nucleus and the triangular nucleus of the septum. Unlike the arrangement of portal vessels, the AP and the nucleus of the solitary tract share a common capillary bed. Taken together, the results reveal that all three sensory CVOs bear direct capillary connections to adjacent neuropil, providing a direct route for diffusible signals to travel from their source to their targets. Skin structure of the slow worm lizard Anguis fragilis (Anguidae, Sauria, Reptilia) with emphasis on the epidermal micro‐ornamentation in relation to the animal movements (Acta Zoologica, Stockholm). The structure of the skin and superficial micro‐ornamentation in the slow worm Anguis fragilis, a limbless lizard with a fossorial activity, was examined using histology, immunofluorescence, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The scales, with a triangular to trapezoidal shape, are very overlapped and interlocked to form a smooth surface and are reinforced by osteoderms. The epidermis shows a thin Oberhautchen layer merged with a thicker beta‐layer that contains corneous beta‐proteins. The SEM survey detects a smooth surface made of tile‐like patterned Oberhautchen cells with irregular perimeters that form an interlocking surface. Disk‐like sensory organs of 15–20 μm diameter are observed only on the head scales, the first to sense the environment and contact the ground. Numerous Oberhautchen denticles, namely corneous thorns of about 0.2–0.3 μm, adorn the caudally directed perimeter of Oberhautchen cells in the ventral scales of the trunk and tail. This microstructure may determine gripping and increased friction with the substrate during the lateral undulating and forward movements of the slow worm. TEM observations reveal sparse short serrated protrusions of Oberhautchen cells that are largely merged with the underlying beta‐cells. The eyes are the organ of sight and one of the most highly developed sensory organs in our body which covers a larger part of the brain. One of the most common problems that are spreading from kids to adults is an eye disorder which can be defined as abnormal functioning of the eye that can lead to vision disturbance. Examples of major eye problems are cataracts, glaucoma, etc. Artificial Intelligence has helped benefit research in the medical field. Ocular diseases can be detected automatically through Computer Vision and Deep Learning models when high-quality medical eye fundus images are provided to them. Inspired by this, we proposed three deep learning models based on the DenseNet pre-trained model for Ocular Disease Detection. Since the amount of eye scans being performed is rapidly growing at a much faster rate than the interpretation of the scan results, our proposed models could help automate the process thus increasing speed and efficiency. The proposed model performed the detection with an accuracy of 77%, 86%, and 98% for Ocular Disease Detection, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Age-Related Macular Degeneration tasks respectively. Animals have evolved numerous mechanisms to perceive and interact with the environment that can be translated into different sensory modalities. However, the genomic and phenotypic features that support sensory functions remain enigmatic for many invertebrates, such as bivalves, an ecologically and economically important taxonomic group. No repertoire of sensory genes has been characterized in bivalves, representing a significant knowledge gap in molluscan sensory biology. Here, we gather multiple lines of evidence to explore the specialized sensory function of bivalve tentacles in the common jingle shell, Anomia simplex. In addition to applying microscopy techniques, we performed transcriptome sequencing of dissected tentacles using phylogenetically-informed annotation to identify candidate receptors. Our results demonstrate the expression of candidate GPCRs, including one opsin type, five small-molecule receptors, and 11 chemosensory-related receptors, supporting the involvement of sensory neurons in the organ, likely in association with the ciliated receptor cells observed along the tentacle surface. In addition, we identified seven ionotropic receptors as putative chemosensory receptors and one member of the Piezo mechanosensitive ion channel, which might be involved in touch sensation by ciliated sensory receptors. Our results provide the first evidence of putative sensory genes expressed in a bivalve sensory organ, representing an important starting point to investigate chemosensation in this class. Specialized chemosensory signals elicit innate social behaviors in individuals of several vertebrate species, a process that is mediated via the accessory olfactory system (AOS). The AOS comprising the peripheral sensory vomeronasal organ has evolved elaborate molecular and cellular mechanisms to detect chemo signals. To gain insight into the cell types, developmental gene expression patterns, and functional differences amongst neurons, we performed single-cell transcriptomics of the mouse vomeronasal sensory epithelium. Our analysis reveals diverse cell types with gene expression patterns specific to each, which we made available as a searchable web resource accessed from https://www.scvnoexplorer.com. Pseudo-time developmental analysis indicates that neurons originating from common progenitors diverge in their gene expression during maturation with transient and persistent transcription factor expression at critical branch points. Comparative analysis across two of the major neuronal subtypes that express divergent GPCR families and the G-protein subunits Gnai2 or Gnao1, reveals significantly higher expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) associated genes within Gnao1 neurons. Bumblebees are crucial pollinators, providing essential ecosystem services and global food production. The success of pollination services relies on the interaction between sensory organs and the environment. The antenna functions as a versatile multi‐sensory organ, pivotal in mediating chemosensory/olfactory information, and governs adaptive responses to environmental changes. Despite an increasing number of RNA‐sequencing studies on insect antenna, comprehensive antennal transcriptome studies at the different life stages were not elucidated systematically. Here, we quantified the expression profile and dynamics of coding/microRNA genes of larval head and antennal tissues from early‐ and late‐stage pupa to the adult of Bombus terrestris as suitable model organism among pollinators. We further performed Pearson correlation analyses on the gene expression profiles of the antennal transcriptome from larval head tissue to adult stages, exploring both positive and negative expression trends. The positively correlated coding genes were primarily enriched in sensory perception of chemical stimuli, ion transport, transmembrane transport processes and olfactory receptor activity. Negatively correlated genes were mainly enriched in organic substance biosynthesis and regulatory mechanisms underlying larval body patterning and the formation of juvenile antennal structures. As post‐transcriptional regulators, miR‐1000‐5p, miR‐13b‐3p, miR‐263‐5p and miR‐252‐5p showed positive correlations, whereas miR‐315‐5p, miR‐92b‐3p, miR‐137‐3p, miR‐11‐3p and miR‐10‐3p exhibited negative correlations in antennal tissue. Notably, based on the inverse expression relationship, positively and negatively correlated microRNA (miRNA)–mRNA target pairs revealed that differentially expressed miRNAs predictively targeted genes involved in antennal development, shaping antennal structures and regulating antenna‐specific functions. Interactions between mammalian immune cells and olfactory progenitor cells modulate neurogenesis and maintenance of the non-neuronal epithelium. Chronic olfactory inflammation may be associated with horizontal basal cell (HBC) immune activation and proliferative self-renewal without neuronal repletion, leading to neuronal loss and olfactory dysfunction that is typically reversible when inflammation resolves. Normally quiescent, olfactory HBCs express immune-associated transcription factors, such as p63, a master regulatory signal for cellular growth and proliferation. When activated by cytokines, HBCs can participate in inflammatory cell infiltration of the olfactory epithelium (OE). Neuronal regeneration that normally proceeds rapidly after acute OE injury can be inhibited following changes in expression of modulatory immune signals associated with severe and prolonged inflammation. The fate of HBCs is redirected toward differentiation into non-neuronal olfactory cell types. NOTCH1 signaling in non-neuronal HBCs is associated with increased expression of interleukin-33, a cytokine that promotes and sustains T-helper type 2–mediated inflammation. The olfactory epithelium serves a dual purpose at the airway surface, responsible for the sense of smell and local defense. In chronic inflammation, interactions between non-neuronal stem cells and the immune system may underlie biocellular changes that ultimately prioritize its protective function as a defensive barrier at the expense of chemosensation. Identifying current knowledge gaps encourages further investigation into olfactory immunology, with implications for future targeted therapies against olfactory dysfunction caused by infection, inflammation, or aging. While primarily a sensory organ, the mammalian olfactory epithelium (OE) also plays a critical role as an immune barrier. Mechanisms governing interactions between the immune system and this specialized chemosensory tissue are gaining interest, in part sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic. Regulated inflammation is intrinsic to normal mucosal healing and homeostasis, but prolonged OE inflammation is associated with persistent loss of smell, belying the intertwining of local mucosal immunology and olfactory function. Evidence supports bidirectional communication between OE cells and the immune system in health and disease. Recent investigations suggest that neuro-immune cross-talk modulates olfactory stem cell behavior and neuronal regeneration dynamics, prioritizing the epithelial-like non-neuronal framework with immune barrier function at the expense of the neurosensory organ in chronic inflammation. Smell and taste are extensively studied in fish species as essential for finding food and selecting mates while avoiding toxic substances and predators. Depending on the evolutionary position and adaptation, a discrete variation in the morphology of these sense organs has been reported in numerous teleost species. Here, for the first time, we approach the phenotypic characterization of the olfactory epithelium and taste buds in the African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), a model organism known for its short lifespan and use in ageing research. Our observations indicate that the olfactory epithelium of N. furzeri is organized as a simple patch, lacking the complex folding into a rosette, with an average size of approximately 600 µm in length, 300 µm in width, and 70 µm in thickness. Three main cytotypes, including olfactory receptor neurons (CalbindinD28K), supporting cells (β-tubulin IV), and basal cells (Ki67), were identified across the epithelium. Further, we determined the taste buds' distribution and quantification between anterior (skin, lips, oral cavity) and posterior (gills, pharynx, oesophagus) systems. We identified the key cytotypes by using immunohistochemical markers, i.e. CalbindinD28K, doublecortin, and neuropeptide Y (NPY) for gustatory receptor cells, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) for supporting cells, and Ki67, a marker of cellular proliferation for basal cells. Altogether, these results indicate that N. furzeri is a microsmatic species with unique taste and olfactory features and possesses a well-developed posterior taste system compared to the anterior. This study provides fundamental insights into the chemosensory biology of N. furzeri, facilitating future investigations into nutrient-sensing mechanisms and their roles in development, survival, and ageing. The insect parasitoid, Pediobius imbreus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), which has a diverse host range, probably possesses various antennal sensilla (sensory organs) to assist the parasitoid in host searching and ensuring its survival. In this study, we aimed to investigate the distribution and morphology of the antennal sensilla of both female and male P. imbreus using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM results revealed that P. imbreus has seven antennomeres on its geniculate antenna, which is composed of scape, pedicel, and five flagellomeres. Numerous antennal sensilla types were observed on the P. imbreus antennae: trichoid sensilla types 1–8; placoid sensilla types 1–2; and basiconic sensilla. The female P. imbreus exhibits a greater abundance of sensilla on both its dorsal and ventral surfaces compared to the male. The trichoid sensilla are the most abundant sensillum type found on the antennae of P. imbreus, followed by placoid sensilla and basiconic sensilla. By comparison, the female P. imbreus have more diverse types of sensilla, which are longer than that of male. Overall, the female antenna and its trichoid sensilla type 6 are significantly (P < 0.05) longer than that of the male. The male P. imbreus does not have trichoid sensilla type 8 and placoid sensilla type 2. The potential roles of the antennal sensilla in host detection based on their location and morphology will be discussed. For over a century, the role of acoustic communication in the sensory ecology of bark beetles (Scolytinae) has been recognized. However, their 'world of sound' remains largely unexplored. Here, we review 153 years of bark beetle bioacoustics publications to summarize current knowledge, identify gaps and suggest future research directions. Our survey identified 117 publications covering 170 species. Morphological reports revealed five stridulatory organs across 125 species, with elytro‐tergal, gular‐prosternal and vertex‐pronotum mechanisms being the most prevalent for sound production. However, confirmed sound recordings exist for only 40 species. Acoustic signalling in adults is proposed to function in avoiding enemies, pair formation, sexual selection and spacing, while in juveniles, vibratory communication is proposed for gallery spacing. However, experimental evidence supporting these functions is lacking. Acoustic sensory organs remain unidentified, and comprehension of signal transmission—whether through airborne sounds or solid‐borne vibrations (or both)—is limited. Bioacoustic technologies have emerged as tools for potential management practices and are also discussed. Based on these findings, we recommend three directions for future research: (1) characterize acoustic morphology and behaviours in more species, particularly unrepresented taxa, with recordings in various contexts, preferably under natural conditions; (2) test hypotheses to explain the functions of acoustic communication through experimental and comparative phylogenetic methods and (3) investigate how sounds or vibrations are transmitted and received through behavioural and neurophysiological experiments. Advancements in bark beetle acoustic sensing and communication research will enhance our understanding of their sensory ecology and facilitate potential control measures of these fascinating insects. Background: There was a fluctuation in medication demand and supply during COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to assess the trend of drug utilisation in Malaysia in 2018–2022 and evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on drug utilisation rates. Methods: We conducted a repeated cross-sectional study of pharmaceutical sales data from public and private sectors in Malaysia from 2018 to 2022. Drug utilisation rates for the period after the onset of COVID-19 (2020–2022) was compared with the earlier period (2018–2019). Interrupted time-series regression analyses evaluated level and slope changes compared to pre-COVID-19 pandemic level for quarterly rates of drugs utilisation in public and private sectors. Results: There was an immediate reduction in the utilisation rates for all drugs after COVID-19 in public (−20.4%; p = 0.043) and private sectors (−22.4%; p = 0.003). In both sectors, significant level changes were observed for anti-infectives, musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, and sensory organs preparations following COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a sustained increase in trend from 2020 to 2022. Public sector had a 22.2% reduction in the utilisation of cardiovascular drugs (p = 0.002), particularly for renin–angiotensin system (RAS) agents (−47.4%, p = 0.019). Private sector had large changes for anti-infectives (−53.6%, p < 0.001) and neurological drugs (−51.4%, p < 0.001), driven by an immediate level reduction in antibacterials (−54.2%, p < 0.001) and cough and cold preparations (−59.2%, p < 0.001). Classes with agents used for COVID-19 treatment, such as systemic corticosteroids, antibiotics, and antivirals had an increasing trend between April 2020 and December 2022, although some slope changes were not statistically significant. Conclusion: A significant reduction in the overall drug utilisation rates was observed in the public and private sectors in Malaysia as an immediate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The impacts varied by therapeutic class and health sector. This finding provides an understanding of the changing patterns of drug utilisation that were affected by disease outbreaks for future planning of pandemic preparedness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mouse models of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) have provided important tools for uncovering the various actions of GH. Nearly 100 years of research using these mouse lines has greatly enhanced our knowledge of the GH/IGF-1 axis. Some of the shared phenotypes of the 5 "common" mouse models of GHD include reduced body size, delayed sexual maturation, decreased fertility, reduced muscle mass, increased adiposity, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. Since these common mouse lines outlive their normal-sized littermates—and have protection from age-associated disease—they have become important fixtures in the aging field. On the other hand, the 12 "uncommon" mouse models of GHD described herein have tremendously divergent health outcomes ranging from beneficial aging phenotypes (similar to those described for the common models) to extremely detrimental features (such as improper development of the central nervous system, numerous sensory organ defects, and embryonic lethality). Moreover, advancements in next-generation sequencing technologies have led to the identification of an expanding array of genes that are recognized as causative agents to numerous rare syndromes with concomitant GHD. Accordingly, this review provides researchers with a comprehensive up-to-date collection of the common and uncommon mouse models of GHD that have been used to study various aspects of physiology and metabolism associated with multiple forms of GHD. In this study, we evaluated the role of the gnathosoma (mouthparts) in chemosensing of the most devastating honey bee parasite, Varroa destructor mite. Through transcriptomic analysis, we compared the expression of putative chemosensory genes between the body parts containing the main chemosensory organs (the forelegs), gnathosoma and the rest of the body devoid of these two body parts. Furthermore, we checked the presence of chemosensory-related transcripts in the proteome of the gnathosoma. Our comparative transcriptomic analysis revealed the presence of 83 transcripts with known characteristic conserved domains belonging to eight chemosensory gene families in the three Varroa transcriptomes. Among these transcripts, 11 were significantly upregulated in the mite's forelegs, compared to 8 and 10 in the gnathosoma and body devoid of both organs, respectively. Whilst the gnathosoma and the forelegs share similar expression of some putative lipid carrier proteins, membrane-bound receptors, and associated proteins, they also differ in the expression profiles of some transcripts belonging to these protein families. This suggests two functional chemosensory organs that may differ in their chemosensory function according to specific characteristics of compounds they detect. Moreover, the higher expression of some chemosensory transcripts in the body devoid of forelegs and gnathosoma compared to the gnathosoma alone, may suggest the presence of additional function of these transcripts or alternatively presence of additional external or internal chemosensory organs. Cartilaginous fishes (chondrichthyans: chimeras and elasmobranchs -sharks, skates, and rays) hold a key phylogenetic position to explore the origin and diversifications of jawed vertebrates. Here, we report and integrate reference genomic, transcriptomic, and morphological data in the small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula to shed light on the evolution of sensory organs. We first characterize general aspects of the catshark genome, confirming the high conservation of genome organization across cartilaginous fishes, and investigate population genomic signatures. Taking advantage of a dense sampling of transcriptomic data, we also identify gene signatures for all major organs, including chondrichthyan specializations, and evaluate expression diversifications between paralogs within major gene families involved in sensory functions. Finally, we combine these data with 3D synchrotron imaging and in situ gene expression analyses to explore chondrichthyan-specific traits and more general evolutionary trends of sensory systems. This approach brings to light, among others, novel markers of the ampullae of Lorenzini electrosensory cells, a duplication hotspot for crystallin genes conserved in jawed vertebrates, and a new metazoan clade of the transient-receptor potential (TRP) family. These resources and results, obtained in an experimentally tractable chondrichthyan model, open new avenues to integrate multiomics analyses for the study of elasmobranchs and jawed vertebrates. Treatments for reproductive disorders in women consist of hormone replacement therapy, which have negative side effects that impact health, spurring the need to understand new mechanisms to employ new therapeutic strategies. Bidirectional communication between sensory neurons and the organs they innervate is an emerging area of interest in tissue physiology with a relevance in reproductive disorders. We hypothesized that the metabolic activity of sensory neurons has a profound effect on reproductive phenotypes. To investigate this phenomenon, we utilized a murine model with conditional deletion of liver kinase B1 (LKB1), a serine/threonine kinase that regulates cellular metabolism in sensory neurons (Nav1.8cre; LKB1fl/fl). LKB1 deletion in sensory neurons resulted in reduced ovarian innervation from dorsal root ganglia neurons and increased follicular turnover compared to littermate controls. Female mice with this LKB1 deletion had significantly more pups per litter compared to wild-type females. Interestingly, the LKB1 genotype of male breeders had no effect on fertility outcomes, thus indicating a female-specific role of sensory neuron metabolism in fertility. Otolith organs in the inner ear and neuromasts in the fish lateral-line harbor two populations of hair cells oriented to detect stimuli in opposing directions. The underlying mechanism is highly conserved: the transcription factor EMX2 is regionally expressed in just one hair cell population and acts through the receptor GPR156 to reverse cell orientation relative to the other population. In mouse and zebrafish, loss of Emx2 results in sensory organs that harbor only one hair cell orientation and are not innervated properly. In zebrafish, Emx2 also confers hair cells with reduced mechanosensory properties. Here, we leverage mouse and zebrafish models lacking GPR156 to determine how detecting stimuli of opposing directions serves vestibular function, and whether GPR156 has other roles besides orienting hair cells. We find that otolith organs in Gpr156 mouse mutants have normal zonal organization and normal type I-II hair cell distribution and mechano-electrical transduction properties. In contrast, gpr156 zebrafish mutants lack the smaller mechanically evoked signals that characterize Emx2-positive hair cells. Loss of GPR156 does not affect orientation-selectivity of afferents in mouse utricle or zebrafish neuromasts. Consistent with normal otolith organ anatomy and afferent selectivity, Gpr156 mutant mice do not show overt vestibular dysfunction. Instead, performance on two tests that engage otolith organs is significantly altered - swimming and off-vertical-axis rotation. We conclude that GPR156 relays hair cell orientation and transduction information downstream of EMX2, but not selectivity for direction-specific afferents. Background: Panarthropods, a major group of invertebrate animals comprised of arthropods, onychophorans, and tardigrades, are the only limb-bearing members of Ecdysozoa. The complexity and versatility of panarthropod paired limbs has prompted great interest in their development to better understand the formation of these structures and the genes involved in this process. However, studies of limb patterning and development are overwhelmingly focused on arthropods, followed by select work on onychophorans but almost entirely lacking for tardigrades. This model organism bias is inherently limited and precludes a comparative analysis of how panarthropod legs originated, have evolved, and the likely limb patterning genes present in the earliest panarthropod ancestors. In this study, we investigated tardigrade homologs of seven arthropod distal limb patterning genes (apterous, aristaless, BarH1, clawless, Lim1, rotund, and spineless) to better characterize tardigrade limb development in a comparative context. Results: We detected homologs of all seven genes in the eutardigrade Hypsibius exemplaris and heterotardigrade Echiniscoides cf. sigismundi suggesting their conservation in both tardigrade lineages. Hybridization chain reaction experiments in H. exemplaris reveal a regionalized expression pattern for the genes aristaless, BarH1, clawless, rotund and spineless. Conclusion: The observed regionalized expression of the distal limb patterning genes in H. exemplaris might reflect the external morphological features of tardigrade legs, such as the distal claws, sensory organs in the proximal region, and specific muscle attachment sites. The comparison between the expression of these limb patterning genes in H. exemplaris relative to other panarthropods suggests their conserved role in the last common panarthropod ancestor, such as establishing the distal limb end and the distribution of sensory structures. Our results support the hypothesis that tardigrade legs are homologous to the distal region of other panarthropod limbs, as suggested by previous work on the expression of leg gap genes in H. exemplaris. Evolutionary changes, associated with the gain or loss of traits, can occur in signal‐emitting and signal‐detecting organs. Related functionality generally accompanies these changes; however, in some cases there are mismatches and evolutionary innovations do not show an indication of functional advantages. Due to this, the relationship between evolutionary changes and the functionality of sensory organs remains unclear. Lizard species belonging to Liolaemus lineomaculatus section present fast evolutionary state transitions associated with the gain or loss of precloacal pores (chemical signalling glands). In this group, precloacal pores configuration includes species where only males have pores (Liolaemus attenboroughi‐ancestral state), where both sexes lack of them (L. kolengh male‐loss), and species where both sexes have pores (L. zullyae, representing a female‐gain). Here, we test the relationships between evolutionary changes of signal‐emitting glands with different chemical and visual behaviours. We conducted behavioural trials in three species belonging to the Liolaemus lineomaculatus section: L. attenboroughi, L. kolengh, and L. zullyae. We measured individuals' chemical and visual responses to different social scents and to conspecific visual stimuli. Results showed the presence of different social scents recognition ability in both male‐only and female‐gain species, whereas male‐loss species showed no behavioural differences among the chemical trials. Lizards exhibited few responses in the visual trials, although the species with pores used chemo‐sensorial sense in the visual trials, while male‐loss species showed differences in visual displays in the presence of conspecific visual stimuli. Lateral inhibition mediates alternative cell fate decision and produces regular cell fate patterns with fate symmetry breaking (SB) relying on the amplification of small stochastic differences in Notch activity via an intercellular negative-feedback loop. Here, we used quantitative live imaging of endogenous Scute (Sc), a proneural factor, and of a Notch activity reporter to study the emergence of sensory organ precursor cells in the pupal abdomen of Drosophila. SB was observed at low Sc levels and was not preceded by a phase of intermediate Sc expression and Notch activity. Thus, mutual inhibition may only be transient in this context. In support of the intercellular feedback loop model, cell-to-cell variations in Sc levels promoted fate divergence. The size of the apical area of competing cells did not detectably bias this fate choice. Surprisingly, cells that were in direct contact at the time of SB could adopt the sensory organ precursor cell fate, albeit at low frequency (10%). How do animals evolve new traits? Sea robins are fish that possess specialized leg-like appendages used to "walk" along the sea floor. Here, we show that legs are bona fide sense organs that localize buried prey. Legs are covered in sensory papillae that receive dense innervation from touch-sensitive neurons, express non-canonical epithelial taste receptors, and mediate chemical sensitivity that drives predatory digging behavior. A combination of developmental analyses, crosses between species with and without papillae, and interspecies comparisons of sea robins from around the world demonstrate that papillae represent a key evolutionary innovation associated with behavioral niche expansion on the sea floor. Brain insulin receptor signaling is strongly implicated in cardiovascular and metabolic physiological regulation. In particular, we recently demonstrated that insulin receptors within the subfornical organ (SFO) play a tonic role in cardiovascular and metabolic regulation in mice. The SFO is a forebrain sensory circumventricular organ that regulates cardiometabolic homeostasis due to its direct exposure to the circulation and thus its ability to sense circulating factors, such as insulin. Previous work has demonstrated broad distribution of insulin receptor-expressing cells throughout the entire SFO, indirectly indicating insulin receptor expression in multiple cell types. Based on this, we sought to determine the cellular phenotypes that express insulin receptors within the SFO by combining immunohistochemistry with genetically modified reporter mouse models. Interestingly, SFO neurons, including both excitatory and inhibitory types, were the dominant cell site for insulin receptor expression, although a weak degree of insulin receptor expression was also detected in astrocytes. Moreover, SFO angiotensin type 1a receptor neurons also expressed insulin receptors. Collectively, these anatomical findings indicate the existence of potentially complex cellular networks within the SFO through which insulin signaling can influence physiology and further point to the SFO as a possible brain site for crosstalk between angiotensin-II and insulin. Background: Body balance is regulated by sensory information from the vestibular, visual and somatosensory systems, and changes in one or more of these sensory systems can trigger balance disorders. Individuals with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) often present peripheral neuropathy, a condition that alters foot sensory information and can negatively influence balance and gait performance of these subjects. Objective: To evaluate and compare balance, gait, functionality and the occurrence of falls between individuals with and without a clinical diagnosis of DM2 with associated peripheral neuropathy. Methods: Cross-sectional study, which evaluated seventy individuals, thirty-five with and thirty-five without a clinical diagnosis of DM2, of both sexes and age range between 50 and 85 years, who were recruited from Basic Health Units of Serra Talhada, Pernambuco state, Brazil. The volunteers' balance was analyzed using the Berg Balance Scale, gait-related functional tasks were measured using the Dynamic Gait Index, functional mobility was assessed using the Timed Up and Go test and functionality was assessed using the Katz Index. The occurrence of falls was recorded by the volunteers' self-report. Results: Individuals with DM2 demonstrated the worst performance in balance (p = 0.000) and in gait-related functional tasks (p = 0.000), slower functional mobility (p = 0.000) and worse functionality (p = 0.016) compared to the group without DM2, demonstrating significant differences for all analyzed outcomes. A greater occurrence of falls was observed in individuals with DM2, compared to those without the disease (p = 0.019). Conclusion: Individuals with DM2 demonstrated worse performance on balance, gait-related functional tasks, slower functional mobility and worse functionality compared to those without the disease. Mechanoreceptor organs in hemimetabolous insects are physiologically important not only in the adult insects, but also for sensory functions in the juvenile postembryonic stages. They provide proprioceptive and exteroceptive information, e.g., in locomotion or orientation. In stick insects (Phasmatodea), the subgenual organ complex in the tibia of all legs is an elaborate mechanoreceptor system. This complex contains two chordotonal organs, the subgenual organ and the distal organ. These organs have mainly been studied in adult insects for the neuroanatomy and functional morphology. Here, the sensory organs were investigated in newly hatched Ramulus artemis (Westwood, 1859) to indicate the functional organisation at the beginning of postembryogenesis, when the detection of mechanical stimuli becomes relevant for behaviour. The organs were investigated by axonal tracing for the organ neuroanatomy, innervation, and number of sensilla in the distal organ. In addition, the sensory complex was analysed for the connection by a membrane between the organs. The organs are present after hatching, indicating in particular a possible vibration detection by the subgenual organ. In most cases, the connection between the sensory organs was also present. This indicates the development of sensory neurons and additional tissues during embryogenesis. The sensory neurons in the subgenual organ show a re-organisation, as the dorsal sensilla change from orientation in distal directions to proximal directions. This finding is discussed for implications in vibration detection. The overall results indicate some neuroanatomical modifications during postembryonic development, while the main structures of the subgenual organ complex already originate during embryonic development. Sensory organs reflect the effects of stimuli and reveal the biological events in their outside and inside environments. The behaviour of spiders is controlled by the central nervous system like in other animals. Spiders contain several types of sensory organs that help them recognize their surroundings. These sensory organs may have mechanoreceptor or chemoreceptor functions. All parts of the spider's body contain different hairs, sensillae, setae and spines. The function of sensory structures is affected by their site in the spider's body. This study aimed at describing different types, distribution and functions of sensory organs of five ground spiders inhabiting Assiut Governorate, Egypt. Fifty samples of spider specimens were collected by hand picking and pitfall traps during years 2016 and 2017 from different habitats. The specimens were examined under a binocular stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. The study revealed the presence of sensory organs on different body parts of the studied spiders, including sensilla trichodea, sensilla placodea, sensilla basiconica, sensilla styloconica, setae, trichobothria and slit sense organs (Lyriform organs). The article brief information on the health status of children with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in catamnesis was given, and the successes and experience gained in the study of this problem in recent years were shared. It is recommended to develop a system of preventive measures for the prevention of infectious pathology (individual vaccination calendar, complex measures to increase the body's resistance) in accordance with the structure of the disease determined for children who have undergone NEC. Taking into account the 1.5 times higher rate of morbidity in children who have undergone NEC, often the detection of pathologies of the endocrine system, nutritional disorders, diseases of the nervous system and sensory organs, diseases of the respiratory organs, diseases of the urinary system, as well as the increase in the specific gravity of children who are often sick receiving, this group of babies requires high attention from the field pediatric service, the treatment is consistently applied using new organizational technologies, and targeted rehabilitation of children who have undergone NEC. The ways in which animals sense the world changes throughout development. For example, young of many species have limited visual capabilities, but still make social decisions, likely based on information gathered through other sensory modalities. Poison frog tadpoles display complex social behaviors that have been suggested to rely on vision despite a century of research indicating tadpoles have poorly-developed visual systems relative to adults. Alternatively, other sensory modalities, such as the lateral line system, are functional at hatching in frogs and may guide social decisions while other sensory systems mature. Here, we examined development of the mechanosensory lateral line and visual systems in tadpoles of the mimic poison frog (Ranitomeya imitator) that use vibrational begging displays to stimulate egg feeding from their mothers. We found that tadpoles hatch with a fully developed lateral line system. While begging behavior increases with development, ablating the lateral line system inhibited begging in pre-metamorphic tadpoles, but not in metamorphic tadpoles. We also found that the increase in begging and decrease in reliance on the lateral line co-occurs with increased retinal neural activity and gene expression associated with eye development. Using the neural tracer neurobiotin, we found that axonal innervations from the eye to the brain proliferate during metamorphosis, with few retinotectal connections in recently-hatched tadpoles. We then tested visual function in a phototaxis assay and found tadpoles prefer darker environments. The strength of this preference increased with developmental stage, but eyes were not required for this behavior, possibly indicating a role for the pineal gland. Together, these data suggest that tadpoles rely on different sensory modalities for social interactions across development and that the development of sensory systems in socially complex poison frog tadpoles is similar to that of other frog species. Staurozoa is a small group of marine stalked jellyfish, some of which have specialized attachment organs — rhopalioids, or so‐called anchors. The adhesive function of these organs was mentioned in numerous studies; however, the mechanism of their temporary attachment is still unknown. Moreover, it is assumed that rhopalioids may be homologous to rhopalia of scypho‐ and cubozoans and provide sensory and integrative functions. Nevertheless, nervous elements associated with rhopalioids are poorly investigated. Thus, we focused on morphological features of rhopalioids in staurozoan Haliclystus auricula James‐Clark, 1863 using histological and semithin sections, and also confocal laser scanning microscopy. We described histological organization of rhopalioids and observed four types of epidermal gland cell, which presumably provide the attachment and reattachment to the substrate. Supposedly, the musculature of rhopalioids can also play a role in the attachment and reattachment. We have studied organization of the nervous system in rhopalioids, which includes FMRFamide‐, tubulin‐ and neurotensin‐positive nerve clusters and FMRFamide‐positive presumptive sensory cells. Background: Evoked potentials are electrical events recorded in the cerebral cortex after stimulation of a sense organ. They are non-invasive studies used to assess visual conduction pathways through optic nerves and the brain. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are affected by physiological factors such as age, sex, visual acuity, head circumference, and pupillary size. VEPs are used to diagnose and assess retinal pathology in ophthalmology, neurological pathology affecting the optic nerve and/or brain. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate gender-related alteration in parameters of VEP, to obtain relationship between head circumference with latency and amplitude values of VEP parameters. To investigate whether gender, head size, or both considered as an important factor influencing VEPs parameters. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study among 50 participants aged 19-29 with normal visual acuity and VEP recordings such as latencies and peak amplitude was performed using a RMS EMG EP Mark II machine. Results: The study examined the mean latencies for N75, P100, and N145 in the left and right eyes of 25 female and 25 male participants. No significant differences were found in N75, P100, and N145 latencies between genders. However, females showed slightly higher amplitude differences than males. In the right eye, females showed higher N75 latency and P100 latency, but no significant gender differences were found for P100 latency or N145 latency. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed weak correlations between head circumference and VEP parameters for females and males, while no significant correlations were observed for females. Conclusion: VEPs are sensitive tools for evaluating visual conduction pathways in eye disease patients. However, gender differences in VEP parameters were not significant in this study, and a negative correlation was found between head size and VEP amplitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sensory functions of organs of the head and neck allow humans to interact with the environment and establish social bonds. With aging, smell, taste, vision, and hearing decline. Evidence suggests that accelerated impairment in sensory abilities can reflect a shift from healthy to pathological aging, including the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurological disorders. While the drivers of early sensory alteration in AD are not elucidated, insults such as trauma and infections can affect sensory function. Herein, we review the involvement of the major head and neck sensory systems in AD, with emphasis on microbes exploiting sensory pathways to enter the brain (the "gateway" hypothesis) and the potential feedback loop by which sensory function may be impacted by central nervous system infection. We emphasize detection of sensory changes as first-line surveillance in senior adults to identify and remove potential insults, like microbial infections, that could precipitate brain pathology. The thalamus is organized into nuclei that have distinct input and output connectivities with the cortex. Whereas first-order (FO) nuclei - also called core nuclei - relay input from sensory organs on the body surface and project to primary cortical sensory areas, higherorder (HO) nuclei - matrix nuclei - instead receive their driver input from the cortex and project to secondary and associative areas within cortico-thalamo-cortical loops. Input-dependent processes have been shown to play a crucial role in the emergence of FO thalamic neuron identity from a ground-state HO neuron identity, yet how this identity emerges during development remains unknown. Here, using single-cell RNA sequencing of the developing mouse embryonic thalamus, we show that, although they are born together, HO neurons start differentiating earlier than FO neurons. Within the FO visual thalamus, postnatal peripheral input is crucial for the maturation of excitatory, but not inhibitory, neurons. Our findings reveal different differentiation tempos and input sensitivities of HO and FO neurons, and highlight neuron type-specific molecular differentiation programs in the developing thalamus. Background/Objectives: Pancreatic stone protein (PSP) is an emerging biomarker of sepsis that is secreted from pancreas sensing remote organ damages. We explored the diagnostic and prognostic utilities of PSP in patients with suspected sepsis. Methods: In a total of 285 patients (suspected sepsis, n = 148; sepsis, n = 137), we compared PSP with procalcitonin (PCT) and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score. Sepsis diagnoses were explored using receiver operating characteristic curve analyses with area under the curves (AUCs). Clinical outcomes (in-hospital mortality, 30-day mortality, and kidney replacement therapy [KRT]) were explored using the Kaplan–Meier method and a multivariate analysis with hazard ratio (HR). Results: PCT and PSP were comparable for sepsis diagnosis (AUC = 0.71–0.72, p < 0.001). The sepsis proportion was significantly higher when both biomarkers increased than when either one or both biomarkers did not increase (89.0% vs. 21.3–47.7%, p < 0.001). Each biomarker quartile (Q1–Q4) differed significantly according to their SOFA score (all p < 0.001). Compared with Q1, the Q2–Q4 groups showed worse clinical outcomes (p = 0.002–0.041). Both biomarkers added to the SOFA score showed higher HRs than the SOFA score alone (3.3–9.6 vs. 2.8–4.2, p < 0.001–0.011), with nearly 2.5-fold higher HR (9.6 vs. 4.2) for predicting KRT. Conclusions: Although PCT and PSP did not independently predict clinical outcomes in the multivariate analysis, PSP demonstrated diagnostic and prognostic utilities in patients with suspected sepsis, especially for predicting kidney dysfunction. The beetle superfamily Elateroidea comprises the most biodiverse bioluminescent insects among terrestrial light-producing animals. Recent exceptional fossils from the Mesozoic era and phylogenomic studies have provided valuable insights into the origin and evolution of bioluminescence in elateroids. However, due to the fragmentary nature of the fossil record, the early evolution of bioluminescence in fireflies (Lampyridae), one of the most charismatic lineages of insects, remains elusive. Here, we report the discovery of the second Mesozoic bioluminescent firefly, Flammarionella hehaikuni Cai, Ballantyne & Kundrata gen. et sp. nov., from the Albian/Cenomanian of northern Myanmar (ca 99 Ma). Based on the available set of diagnostic characters, we interpret the specimen as a female of stem-group Luciolinae. The fossil possesses deeply impressed oval pits on the apices of antennomeres 3–11, representing specialized sensory organs likely involved in olfaction. The light organ near the abdominal apex of Flammarionella resembles that found in extant light-producing lucioline fireflies. The growing fossil record of lampyrids provides direct evidence that the stunning light displays of fireflies were already established by the late Mesozoic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Esophageal inflammatory diseases are frequent diagnoses in clinical practice and have diverse etiologies, the most common being those associated with the exposure to gastric content, drugs and allergens. In diseases, the immunological component is well identified in endoscopic biopsies, which mainly contain the epithelium and the lamina propria; however, deeper layers are less studied. Moreover, the esophageal capacity of sensing luminal compounds is poorly understood. Methods: In transmural sections from proximal, middle and distal esophagus obtained from deceased patients, we performed a phenotypic analysis of the main immune cell populations and acid-sensing receptors by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence methods. Results: A total of nine donors were studied (absence of pathology, optimal tissue preservation and orientation). We found the following: (1) the vascular papillae and the lamina propria are the most infiltrated layers by the lymphoid lineage (T and B lymphocytes), followed by the epithelium, while the smooth muscular layers are mainly populated by the myeloid lineage (macrophages and mast cells); (2) intraepithelial macrophages are consistently found along the esophagus; and (3) eosinophils are absent in all the esophageal layers. The acid-sensing receptors ASIC-1, ASIC-2 and δENAC are expressed in the esophageal epithelium and in the lamina propria, yet only ASIC-2 is expressed in the muscularis mucosae. Conclusions: The human esophagus contains a differential distribution of immune cells and acid-sensing receptors across its layers. In several biological processes, H2S is known to function as an endogenous gaseous agent. It is very necessary to monitor H2S and relevant physiological processes in vivo. Herein, a new type of fluorophore with a reliable leaving group allows for excited‐state intramolecular transfer characteristics (ESIPT), inspired by mycophenolic acid. A morpholine ring was connected at the maleimide position of the probe to target the lysosome. Subsequently, the dinitrophenyl group known for a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) effect, was connected to allow for an effective "turn‐on" probe Lyso‐H2S. Lyso‐H2S demonstrated strong selectivity towards H2S, a large Stokes shift (111 nm), and an incredibly low detection limit (41.8 nM). The imaging of endogenous and exogenous H2S in living cells (A549 cell line) was successfully achieved because of the specificity and ultra‐low toxicity (100 % cell viability at 50 μM concentration of Lyso‐H2S.) Additionally, Lyso‐H2S was also employed to visualize the activity of H2S in the gallbladder and intestine in a living zebrafish model. The community uses Tetracera indica (Christm. and Panz.) Merr extensively as a traditional medicine. This plant was the main source of raw materials for herbal medicinal products, so identification was needed to ensure its authenticity through pharmacognosy evaluation. The present study evaluated macros- and microscopic characteristics, performed phytochemical analysis, and performed total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid content (TFC) analysis. The organoleptic and macroscopic studies were carried out through sensory organs. The microscopic characteristics of leaf powder and twigs identification using chloral hydrate and distilled water. Numerous chemical reagents, TLC methods and LC-MS/MS analysis were employed in the phytochemical study. Research employed DPPH and FRAP tests to assess the antioxidant activity. Furthermore, quercetin was used as a marker of antioxidant activity. The morphological marker of the leaf T. indica showed the surface of the leaves is rough bristles, shape elliptic-oblong, margin serratus and phyllotaxy alternate. The stem is lignosus, and the rough stem surface is slightly peeling. The lower leaf surface had paracytic stomata and uniseriate trichomes with tapering ends. Raphide crystals and cork cells were detected in the powder analysis of the twigs. The ethyl acetate extract's twig had the highest TPC and TFC values. Ethyl acetate extract from Tetracera indica twigs has potent antioxidant activity with IC50 = 99.84±0.011 µg/ml (DPPH) and 4296.67±0.024 mol/g (FRAP). The study showed that Tetracera indica contains possible active components that could be developed as novel antioxidants. Simple Summary: Antennae are prominent sensory organs in insects, facilitating various behaviors such as navigation, foraging, and pheromone communication. Due to their exclusively diurnal lifestyle, butterflies are generally thought to rely primarily on vision rather than other sensory systems, such as antennae, which have therefore received little attention. This study examined the morphological characteristics and sensilla types of the antennae in the lycaenid butterfly Pseudozizeeria maha, known for its sexual dimorphism in wing coloration, to determine whether there are sex-specific variations in antennal traits. While the sexes of P. maha have uniform clavate antennae without significant sexual differences in the overall morphology and types of sensilla, the sensilla coeloconica display significant sex-specific differences, being more abundant in females. This suggests that female P. maha might rely on olfactory cues for certain sex-specific behaviors, such as oviposition site selection, highlighting the importance of non-visual sensory capabilities in the life of P. maha. The pale grass blue, Pseudozizeeria maha, is a small lycaenid butterfly widely distributed across Asia. Due to its exclusively diurnal lifestyle and conspicuous sexual dimorphism in wing coloration, vision has traditionally been regarded as the primary sensory system driving various behaviors. However, non-visual sensory systems related to sex-specific behavioral responses, such as antennae, have received far less attention. This study investigated the morphological characteristics and sensilla types of the antennae in adult P. maha using scanning electron microscopy, with a focus on potential sexual dimorphism. The antennae of adult P. maha are clavate, with no significant sexual differences in overall morphology. Six types of antennal sensilla were identified: Böhm bristles, sensilla squamiformia, sensilla trichodea, sensilla chaetica, sensilla basiconica, and sensilla coeloconica, with no sexual dimorphism observed in their morphological types or dimensions. Remarkably, the sensilla coeloconica exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, with a more prominent presence in females. Simple Summary: Hylamorpha elegans, a native Chilean scarab beetle regarded as a significant pest, feeds on economically important crops, such as red clover, ryegrass, and wheat, in its larval stage (i.e., white grubs). Traditionally, chemical control through insecticides has been used against H. elegans without success, and alternative control strategies based on ethology and the use of semiochemicals have remained elusive. Thus, chemical communication through chemosensory genes in H. elegans could represent an advance towards integrated pest management. In this study, the repertoire of chemosensory gene candidates from white grubs of H. elegans, their phylogenetic relationships, and relative gene expression have been reported for the first time. Olfaction and gustation processes play key roles in the life cycle of insects, such as finding and accepting food sources, oviposition sites, and mates, among other fundamental aspects of insect development. In this context, chemosensory genes found in sensory organs (e.g., antennae and maxillary palps) are crucial for understanding insect behaviour, particularly the phytophagous behaviour of insect pests that attack economically important crops. An example is the scarab beetle Hylamorpha elegans, which feeds on the roots of several crops important for livestock in its larval stage. In this study, chemosensory gene candidates of H. elegans white grubs identified through the head transcriptome and phylogenetic and tissue-biased gene expression (antennae, head without antennae, and legs) have been reported. Overall, 47 chemosensory genes were identified (2 ORs, 1 GR, 11 IRs, 9 CSPs, and 24 OBPs). Gene expression analysis revealed the predominant presence of IRs in the legs, whereas ORs and the GR were present in the heads and/or antennae. Particularly, HeleOBP9 and HeleCSP2 were significantly expressed in the head but not in the antennae or legs; these and other genes are discussed as potential targets in the context of H. elegans management. The brain and gut are sensory organs responsible for sensing, transmitting, integrating, and responding to signals from the internal and external environment. In‐depth analysis of brain–gut axis interactions is important for human health and disease prevention. Current research on the brain–gut axis primarily relies on animal models. However, animal models make it difficult to study disease mechanisms due to inherent species differences, and the reproducibility of experiments is poor because of individual animal variations, which leads to a significant limitation of real‐time sensory responses. Organ‐on‐a‐chip platforms provide an innovative approach for disease treatment and personalized research by replicating brain and gut ecosystems in vitro. This enables a precise understanding of their biological functions and physiological responses. In this article, we examine the history and most current developments in brain, gut, and gut–brain chips. The importance of these systems for understanding pathophysiology and developing new drugs is emphasized throughout the review. Purpose: Otology and neuro-otology surgeries pose significant challenges due to the intricate and variable anatomy of the temporal bone (TB), requiring extensive training. In the last years 3D-printed temporal bone models for otological dissection are becoming increasingly popular. In this study, we presented a new 3D-printed temporal bone model named 'SAPIENS', tailored for educational and surgical simulation purposes. Methods: The 'SAPIENS' model was a collaborative effort involving a multidisciplinary team, including radiologists, software engineers, ENT specialists, and 3D-printing experts. The development process spanned from June 2022 to October 2023 at the Department of Sense Organs, Sapienza University of Rome. Acquisition of human temporal bone images; temporal bone rendering; 3D-printing; post-printing phase; 3D-printed temporal bone model dissection and validation. Results: The 'SAPIENS' 3D-printed temporal bone model demonstrated a high level of anatomical accuracy, resembling the human temporal bone in both middle and inner ear anatomy. The questionnaire-based assessment by five experienced ENT surgeons yielded an average total score of 49.4 ± 1.8 out of 61, indicating a model highly similar to the human TB for both anatomy and dissection. Specific areas of excellence included external contour, sigmoid sinus contour, cortical mastoidectomy simulation, and its utility as a surgical practice simulator. Conclusion: We have designed and developed a 3D model of the temporal bone that closely resembles the human temporal bone. This model enables the surgical dissection of the middle ear and mastoid with an excellent degree of similarity to the dissection performed on cadaveric temporal bones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
