Hemispheric lateralization and cooperation are essential for efficient brain function, and aberrations in both have been found in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. This study investigated alterations in hemispheric lateralization and cooperation among patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and associations with neurotransmitter and cell-type density distributions to identify potential molecular and cellular pathomechanisms. Sixty-seven BD patients and 127 healthy controls (HCs) were examined by resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). Whole-brain maps of the autonomy index (AI) and connectivity between functionally homotopic voxels (CFH) were constructed to reveal BD-specific changes in brain functional lateralization and interhemispheric cooperation, respectively. Spatial associations of regional AI and CFH abnormalities with neurotransmitter and cell-type density distributions were examined by correlation analyses. Bipolar disorder patients exhibited higher AI values in left superior parietal gyrus, cerebellar right Crus I, and cerebellar right Crus II, and these regional abnormalities were associated with the relative densities (proportions) of oligodendrocyte precursor cells and microglia. Patients also exhibited lower CFH values in right inferior parietal gyrus, bilateral middle occipital gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, and bilateral cerebellar crus II, and these regional abnormalities were associated with the densities of serotonin 1A and dopamine D2 receptors, oligodendrocyte precursor cells, astrocytes, and neurons. The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in the resting-state brain functional network characteristics of lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) patients using surface-based degree centrality (DC), and to analyze the correlation between these alterations and clinical symptoms in PE patients. The study included individuals with lifelong PE (patient group, n = 36) and a control group matched by age and education level (control group, n = 22). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans were performed on all participants. Surface-based degree centrality analysis was conducted and the differences between the two groups were compared using t-tests. Further, the DC values of brain regions showing significant differences were correlated with clinical symptoms. Compared to the control group, the patient group exhibited significantly reduced degree centrality (DC) values in the left precuneus and significantly increased DC values in the right supplementary motor area (SMA). Furthermore, intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) and Chinese Index of Premature Ejaculation (CIPE) values were positively correlated with left precuneus DC values and negatively correlated with right SMA DC values. Patients with primary lifelong ejaculation demonstrate abnormalities in key brain network nodes and their connections with relevant brain regions, which are strongly associate with clinical symptoms. Background: The neuropathophysiological mechanisms of brain damage underlying hypothyroidism remain unclear. Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) has been established as a reliable indicator for investigation of abnormal spontaneous brain activity that occurs at specific frequencies in different types of mental disorder. However, the changes of fALFF in specific frequency bands in hypothyroidism have not yet been investigated. Methods: Fifty-three hypothyroid patients and 39 healthy controls (HCs) underwent thyroid-related hormone levels tests, neuropsychological assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The fALFF in the standard band (0.01-0.1 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and slow-5 bands (0.01-0.027 Hz) were analyzed. An analysis of Pearson correlation was conducted between fALFF, thyroid-related hormone levels, and neuropsychological scores in hypothyroid patients. Results: Compared to HCs, within the routine band, hypothyroidism group showed significantly decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, middle temporal gyrus (MTG), precentral gyrus, calcarine cortex, and right inferior occipital gyrus; within the slow-5 band, the hypothyroidism group exhibited decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, MTG, superior temporal gyrus, postcentral gyrus, and paracentral lobule, and increased fALFF in supplementary motor area (SMA) and right middle frontal gyrus; additionally, fALFF in the left lingual gyrus within the routine and slow-5 bands were negatively correlated with the level of thyroid stimulating hormone. Conclusions: In this study, the slow-5 frequency band exhibits better sensitivity than the standard band in detecting fALFF values. A decrease of fALFF values in the lingual gyrus and MTG was observed in both the standard and slow-5 bands and might present potential neuroimaging biomarkers for hypothyroidism. Eventually, 29 patients (CNP group) and 29 healthy volunteers (HC group) completed the acquisition of clinical data and resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rs BOLD-fMRI) amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) data; in addition, we assessed the relationship between differentially active brain regions and clinical indicators.Results: The CNP group found greater ALFF values in the insula, cingulate gyrus, prefrontal lobe, and other brain regions. The occipital, parietal, and other brain regions had lower ALFF values. In addition, there was a negative connection between the duration of the sickness in the CNP group and the ALFF value of the right superior parietal gyrus (SPG.R). The level of tenderness threshold exhibited a negative correlation with the ALFF value of the left insula (INS.L). In addition, the NPQ score showed a negative association with the ALFF value of the ORBinf.R and a positive correlation with the ALFF value of the CC1.L. Finally, the HADS-A score exhibited a positive correlation with the ALFF value of the right anterior cingulate and paracingulate gyrus (ACG.R).Conclusion: Young patients with chronic neck pain show extensive central remodeling, with altered functional activity in pain-emotion brain areas (such as the cingulate gyrus and insula), pain-cognition brain areas (such as the prefrontal lobe), and other special sensory brain areas (such as the parietal and occipital lobes). Aims: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience improvement in motor symptoms after deep brain stimulation (DBS) and before initiating stimulation. This is called the microlesion effect. However, the mechanism remains unclear. The study aims to comprehensively explore the changes in functional connectivity (FC) patterns in movement‐related brain regions in PD patients during the microlesion phase through seed‐based FC analysis. Methods: The study collected the resting functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 49 PD patients before and after DBS surgery (off stimulation). The cortical and subcortical areas related to motor function were selected for seed‐based FC analysis. Meanwhile, their relationship with the motor scale was investigated. Results: The motor‐related brain regions were selected as the seed point, and we observed various FC declines within the motor network brain regions. These declines were primarily in the left middle temporal gyrus, bilateral middle frontal gyrus, right supplementary motor area, left precentral gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, and right superior frontal gyrus after DBS. Conclusion: The movement‐related network was extensively reorganized during the microlesion period. The study provided new information on enhancing motor function from the network level post‐DBS. Deep neural networks (DNN) are increasingly being used in neuroimaging research for the diagnosis of brain disorders and understanding of human brain. Despite their impressive performance, their usage in medical applications will be limited unless there is more transparency on how these algorithms arrive at their decisions. We address this issue in the current report. A DNN classifier was trained to discriminate between healthy subjects and those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using brain connectivity obtained from functional magnetic resonance imaging data. The classifier provided 90% accuracy. Brain connectivity features important for classification were generated for a pool of test subjects and permutation testing was used to identify significantly discriminative connections. Such heatmaps of significant paths were generated from 10 different interpretability algorithms based on variants of layer-wise relevance and gradient attribution methods. Since different interpretability algorithms make different assumptions about the data and model, their explanations had both commonalities and differences. Therefore, we developed a consensus across interpretability methods, which aligned well with the existing knowledge about brain alterations underlying PTSD. The confident identification of more than 20 regions, acknowledged for their relevance to PTSD in prior studies, was achieved with a voting score exceeding 8 and a family-wise correction threshold below 0.05. Our work illustrates how robustness and physiological plausibility of explanations can be achieved in interpreting classifications obtained from DNNs in diagnostic neuroimaging applications by evaluating convergence across methods. This will be crucial for trust in AI-based medical diagnostics in the future.

• Alterations in regional spontaneous activity between depressive patients with and without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) were studied by resting-state fMRI. • The NSSI group had characteristic alterations in brain activity and these alterations correlated with clinical features. • This provides help to differentiate subtypes of depression and to predict suicide risk. We conducted this resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) study to characterize changes in regional homogeneity (ReHo) or fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) in young adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), with or without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). We recruited 54 MDD patients with NSSI (MDD/NSSI), 68 MDD patients without NSSI, which is referred to as simple MDD (sMDD), and 66 matched healthy controls (HCs). A combination of fALFF and ReHo analyses was conducted. The effects of NSSI on the brain and their relationship to clinical variables were examined in this study. MDD/NSSI patients have decreased fALFF in the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), decreased ReHo in the right SFG and the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and the left middle occipital gyrus (MOG). fALFF and ReHo values of the right SFG are positively correlated. The ReHo values of the right SFG and the number of recent self-injuries are positively correlated; the fALFF values of the right SFG are negatively correlated with NSSI severity. There is a difference in brain activity between MDD/NSSI and sMDD, which may serve as an important physiological marker to determine the risk of self-injury and suicide. Abnormal brain activity in patients with NSSI may provide new perspectives and significant implications on the severity of MDD patients and the prevention of self-injury and suicide. Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) are at high risk of suicidal ideation (SI), and BD patients with suicidal ideation (BDSI) have shown marked abnormalities in spontaneous brain function. Cognitive impairment, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the core symptoms of BD. However, few studies have addressed the association between cognitive performance and abnormal spontaneous brain function in BDSI. In the current study, the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) was used to assess cognitive performance in BDSI (n = 20), BD subjects without suicidal ideation (BDNSI) (n = 24) and healthy controls (HC) (n = 30). Their cognitive performance was then correlated with amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) values obtained by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). We found that ALFF was significantly higher in the left precuneus and right posterior cingulate cortex in the BDSI group and significantly lower in the right precuneus in the BDNSI group than in the HC group. In addition, in the BDSI group, visual learning performance was positively correlated with ALFF values in the left precuneus. An increasing number of recent brain imaging studies are dedicated to understanding the neuro mechanism of cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) individuals. In contrast to efforts to date that are limited to static functional connectivity, here we investigate abnormal connectivity in T2DM individuals by characterizing the time-varying properties of brain functional networks. Using group independent component analysis (GICA), sliding-window analysis, and k-means clustering, we extracted thirty-one intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) and estimated four recurring brain states. We observed significant group differences in fraction time (FT) and mean dwell time (MDT), and significant negative correlation between the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores and FT/MDT. We found that in the T2DM group the inter- and intra-network connectivity decreases and increases respectively for the default mode network (DMN) and task-positive network (TPN). We also found alteration in the precuneus network (PCUN) and enhanced connectivity between the salience network (SN) and the TPN. Our study provides evidence of alterations of large-scale resting networks in T2DM individuals and shed light on the fundamental mechanisms of neurocognitive deficits in T2DM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) spreads rapidly worldwide and causes severe acute respiratory syndrome. The current study aims to evaluate the relationship between the whole-brain functional connections in a resting state and cognitive impairments in patients with COVID-19 compared to the healthy control group. Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) data were obtained from 29 patients of the acute stage of COVID-19 on the third day of admission and 20 healthy controls. Cross-correlation of the mean resting-state signals was determined in the voxels of 23 independent components (IC) of brain neural circuits. To assess cognitive function and neuropsychological status, MoCA was performed on all participants. The relationship between rs-fMRI information, neuropsychological status, and paraclinical data was analyzed. Results: The COVID-19 group got a lower mean MoCA score and showed a significant reduction in the functional connectivity of the IC14 (P<0.001) and IC38 (P<0.001) regions compared to the controls. The increase in functional connectivity was observed in the COVID-19 group compared to the controls at baseline in the default mode network (DMN) IC00 (P<0.001) and dorsal attention network (DAN) IC08 (P<0.001) regions. Furthermore, the alternation of functional connectivity in the mentioned ICs was significantly correlated with the mean MoCA scores and inflammatory parameters, i.e. erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Conclusion: Functional connectivity abnormalities in four brain neural circuits are associated with cognitive impairment and increased inflammatory markers in patients with COVID-19. Introduction: Lumbar disc herniation, a chronic degenerative disease, is one of the major contributors to chronic low back pain and disability. Although many studies have been conducted in the past on brain function in chronic low back pain, most of these studies did not classify chronic low back pain (cLBP) patients according to their etiology. The lack of etiologic classification may lead to inconsistencies between findings, and the correlation between differences in brain activation and clinical symptoms in patients with cLBP was less studied in the past. Methods: In this study, 36 lumbar disc herniation patients with chronic low back pain (LDHCP) and 36 healthy controls (HCs) were included to study brain activity abnormalities in LDHCP. Visual analogue scale (VAS), oswestry disability index (ODI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used to assess clinical symptoms. Results: The results showed that LDHCP patients exhibited abnormally increased and diminished activation of brain regions compared to HCs. Correlation analysis showed that the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in the left middle frontal gyrus is negatively correlated with SAS and VAS, while the right superior temporal gyrus is positively correlated with SAS and VAS, the dorsolateral left superior frontal gyrus and the right middle frontal gyrus are negatively correlated with VAS and SAS, respectively. Conclusion: LDHCP patients have brain regions with abnormally increased and abnormally decreased activation compared to healthy controls. Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the spontaneous neuronal activity and functional connectivity pattern variations using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) measures, such as amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), and functional connectivity (FC), in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). Method: A total of 24 active TAO patients, 26 inactive TAO patients, and 27 matched healthy controls (HCs) were included. First, ALFF and fALFF were used to detect local neural activity changes, the MRI data were analyzed, and regions with group differences were taken as seeds. Second, FC analysis was performed to explore the altered connection between seeds and other brain regions. A correlation analysis was performed to assess the relationship between functional brain activity and clinical indices and neuropsychiatric behaviors. Results: Compared to HCs, both active and inactive TAO patients exhibited significantly lower ALFF values in the right calcarine (Calcarine_R) and left postcentral gyrus (Postcentral_L). Active TAO patients also showed significantly higher ALFF values in the left caudate nucleus (Caudate_L) and increased fALFF values in the superior lobe of the right cerebellum (Cerebelum_Crus1_R). Moreover, both active and inactive TAO patients demonstrated decreased FC within the left postcentral gyrus (Postcentral_L) compared to HCs. Additionally, active TAO patients exhibited lower FC compared to inactive TAO patients. The ALFF values in the Calcarine_R of active TAO patients positively correlated with disease duration (r = 0.5892, p = 0.0049) and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS; r = 0.5377, p = 0.0119). Furthermore, the ALFF value in the Calcarine_R of inactive TAO patients negatively correlated with visual functioning (r = -0.5449, p = 0.0072), while the ALFF values in the Caudate_L of active TAO patients positively correlated with visual functioning (r = 0.6496, p = 0.0014). Conclusion: We found that the Caudate_L and Cerebelum_Crus1_R related to motor control and coordination in active TAO patients exhibit significant compensatory mechanisms; whereas, the Calcarine_R and Postcentral_L related to visual and somatosensory cortices show varying degrees of impairment. Objectives: Migraine is often combined with vestibular dysfunction, particularly in patients with chronic migraine (CM). However, the pathogenesis of migraine chronification leading to vestibular dysfunction is not fully understood. The current study investigated whether structural or functional impairments to the brain during migraine chronification could be associated with vestibular dysfunction development. Methods: The eligible participants underwent clinical assessment and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) determined structural impairment by evaluating alterations in gray matter volume (GMV). Functional impairment was assessed by the mean amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (mALFF). Furthermore, the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of regions possessing impairment was examined with a seed-based approach. We also analyzed the correlations between altered neuroimaging features with clinical variables and performed multiple linear regression. Results: Eighteen CM patients, 18 episodic migraine (EM) patients, and 18 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. A one-way ANOVA indicated the group differences in mALFF. These were located within right supramarginal gyrus (SMG), left angular gyrus (AG), middle frontal gyrus (MFG), left middle occipital gyrus (MOG), right rolandic operculum (Rol) and left superior parietal gyrus (SPG). During rsFC analysis, the CM group had more enhanced rsFC of left SPG with left MOG than the EM and HC groups. The EM group revealed enhanced rsFC of left SPG with left AG than the CM and HC groups. In multiple linear regression, after controlling for age, body mass index (BMI) and disease duration, the rsFC of left SPG with left MOG (b = 48.896, p = 0.021) was found to predict the total Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) score with an explained variance of 25.1%. Moreover, the rsFC of left SPG with left MOG (b = 1.253, p = 0.003) and right SMG (b =and the degree of vestibular dysfunction. We propose using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data to characterize connectivity patterns in drug-resistant epilepsy. Methods: This study enrolled 47 participants, including 28 with drug-resistant epilepsy and 19 healthy controls. Functional and effective connectivity was employed to assess drug-resistant epilepsy patients within resting state networks. The resting state functional connectivity (FC) analysis was performed to assess connectivity between each patient and healthy controls within the default mode network (DMN) and the dorsal attention network (DAN). In addition, dynamic causal modeling was used to compute effective connectivity (EC). Finally, a statistical analysis was performed to evaluate our findings. Results: The FC analysis revealed significant connectivity changes in patients giving 64.3% (18/28) and 78.6% (22/28) for DMN and DAN, respectively. Statistical analysis of FC was significant between the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and bilateral inferior parietal cortex for DMN. For DAN, it was significant between the left and the right intraparietal sulcus and the frontal eye field. For the DMN, the patient group showed significant EC connectivity in the right inferior parietal cortex and the medial prefrontal cortex for the DMN. There was also bilateral connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex and the posterior cingulate cortex, as well as between the left and right inferior parietal cortex. For DAN, patients showed significant connectivity in the right frontal eye field and the right intraparietal sulcus. Bilateral connectivity was also found between the left frontal eye field and the left intraparietal sulcus, as well as between the right frontal eye field and the right intraparietal sulcus. The statistical analysis of the EC revealed a significant result in the medial prefrontal cortex and the right intraparietal cortex for the DMN. The DAN was found significant in the left frontal eye field, as well as the left and right intraparietal sulcus. Conclusion: Our results provide preliminary evidence to support that the combination of functional and effective connectivity analysis of rs-fMRI can aid in diagnosing epilepsy in the DMN and DAN networks. Purpose: To investigate the spontaneous brain activity alterations in survivors of cardiac arrest (CA) with good neurological outcome using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) with amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) methods. Materials and methods: Thirteen CA survivors with favorable neurological outcomes and 13 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited and underwent rs-fMRI scans. The ALFF and ReHo methods were applied to assess the regional intensity and synchronization of spontaneous brain activity. Correlation analyses were performed to explore the relationships between the mean ALFF and ReHo values in significant clusters and clinical parameters. Results: The survivors of CA showed significantly decreased ALFF values in the left postcentral gyrus and precentral gyrus and increased ALFF values in the left hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus than HCs. Significantly decreased ReHo values were observed in the left inferior occipital gyrus and middle occipital gyrus in the patients. Mean ALFF values in the left hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus were positively correlated with the time to return of spontaneous circulation (r = 0.794, p = 0.006) in the patient group. Conclusion: Functional activity alterations in the brain areas corresponding to known cognitive and physical impairments were observed in CA survivors with preserved neurological function. There was also bilateral connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex and the posterior cingulate cortex, as well as between the left and right inferior parietal cortex. For DAN, patients showed significant connectivity in the right frontal eye field and the right intraparietal sulcus. Bilateral connectivity was also found between the left frontal eye field and the left intraparietal sulcus, as well as between the right frontal eye field and the right intraparietal sulcus. The statistical analysis of the EC revealed a significant result in the medial prefrontal cortex and the right intraparietal cortex for the DMN. The DAN was found significant in the left frontal eye field, as well as the left and right intraparietal sulcus.ConclusionOur results provide preliminary evidence to support that the combination of functional and effective connectivity analysis of rs-fMRI can aid in diagnosing epilepsy in the DMN and DAN networks.

Childhood emotional neglect (CEN) has a relatively high incidence rate and substantially adverse effects. Many studies have found that CEN is closely related to emotion regulation and depression symptoms. Besides, the functional activity of the prefrontal lobe may also be related to them. However, the relationships between the above variables have not been thoroughly studied. This study recruited two groups of college students, namely, those with primary CEN (neglect group) and those without childhood trauma (control group), to explore the relationships among CEN, adulthood emotion regulation, depressive symptoms, and prefrontal resting functional connections. The methods used in this study included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The results showed that compared with the control group, the neglect group utilized the reappraisal strategy less frequently and displayed more depressive symptoms. The prefrontal functional connections with other brain regions in the neglect group were more robust than those in the control group using less stringent multiple correction standards. Across the two groups, the functional connection strength between the right orbitofrontal gyrus and the right middle frontal gyrus significantly negatively correlated with the ERQ reappraisal score and positively correlated with the BDI-II total score; the ERQ reappraisal score wholly mediated the relationship between the functional connection strength and the BDI-II total score. It suggests that primary CEN may closely correlate with more depressive symptoms in adulthood. Furthermore, the more robust spontaneous activity of the prefrontal lobe may also be closely associated with more depressive symptoms by utilizing a reappraisal strategy less frequently.

Objective: To study the dynamic changes of local metrics in patients with toothache (TA, Toothache) in the resting state, in order to further understand the changes of central neural mechanism in patients with dental pain and its effect on cognition and emotion. Methods: Thirty patients with TA and thirty matched healthy (HC) control volunteers were recruited, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rs-MRI) scans were performed on all subjects, and data were analyzed to compare group differences in three dynamic local indices: dynamic regional homogeneity (dReHO), dynamic low-frequency fluctuation amplitude (dALFF) and dynamic fractional low-frequency fluctuation amplitude (dfALFF). In addition, the association between dynamic local metrics in different brain regions of TA patients and scores on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was investigated by Pearson correlation analysis. Results: In this study, we found that The local metrics of TA patients changed with time Compared with the HC group, TA patients showed increased dReHo values in the left superior temporal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, precentral gyrus, precuneus, angular gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, postcentral gyrus and middle frontal gyrus, increased dALFF values in the right superior frontal gyrus, and increased dfALFF values in the right middle temporal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus and right superior occipital gyrus (p < 0.01, cluster level P < 0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that dReHo values of left precuneus and left angular gyrus were positively correlated with VAS scores in TA group. dReHo value of right posterior central gyrus was positively correlated with HADS score (P < 0.05). Background: Apathy is among the most prevalent and incapacitating nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). PD patients with apathy (PD-A) have been reported to have abnormal spontaneous brain activity mainly in 0.01-0.08 Hz. However, the frequency-dependence of brain activity in PD-A remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether abnormalities in PD-A are associated with specific frequency bands. Materials and methods: Overall, 28 patients with PD-A, 19 PD patients without apathy (PD-NA), and 32 gender-, age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data, demographic information, and neuropsychological assessments, including apathy, depression, anxiety and cognitive function for every participant. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and degree centrality (DC) were calculated in the conventional (0.01-0.08 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and slow-5 (0.01-0.027 Hz) frequency bands based on statistical parametric mapping (SPM12) and RESTplus V1.25. Two-sample t-tests were performed to compare the differences among the three groups. Results: PD-A reduced ALFF in the right anterior cingulate gyri in the slow-5 band and decreased fALFF in the right middle frontal gyrus in the conventional band, compared to patients with PD-NA. However, PerAF, ReHo, and DC could not distinguish PD-A from PD-NA in the three bands. PD-A had higher ALFF and fALFF in the left middle occipital gyrus and lower fALFF in the bilateral insula in the slow-5 band compared to the HCs. Furthermore, abnormal DC value in hippocampus and parahippocampus was observed separately in the conventional band and in the slow-4 band between PD-A and HCs. Moreover, PD-A and PD-NA showed lower ReHo in cerebellum in the three bands compared to the HCs. Conclusion: Our study revealed that PD-A and PD-NA might have different neurophysiological mechanisms. Concurrently, the ALFF in the slow-5 band and fALFF in the conventional band were sensitive in differentiating PD-A from PD-NA. The influence of apathy on the disease can be considered in the future research on PD, with the effects of frequency band taken into account when analyzing spontaneous brain activities in PD-A. Cognitive Reserve (CR) is considered a protective factor during the aging process. However, although CR is a multifactorial construct, it has been operationalized in a unitary way (years of formal education or IQ). In the present study, a validated measure to categorize CR holistically (Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire) was used to evaluate the resting-state functional connectivity in 77 cognitively unimpaired participants aged 50 years and over with high and low CR, and matched brain global atrophy levels. The connectivity of networks linked to attentional (Dorsal Attention Network -DAN-) and executive (Frontal-Parietal Control Network -FPCN-) processes were evaluated by the combination of Independent Component Analysis and seed-based approaches, since these networks have been proposed as candidates to underlie the protective effect of CR in the aging context. Participants with high CR showed an increase of the connectivity in the FPCN and a decrease in the DAN with respect to the low CR group, correlating with neuropsychological scores and supporting that high CR is related to a better neurocognitive preservation during aging. Background and objective: While evidence has demonstrated that the default-mode network (DMN) plays a key role in the broad-scale cognitive problems that occur in right temporal lobe epilepsy (rTLE), little is known about alterations in the network homogeneity (NH) of the DMN in TLE. In this study, we used the NH method to investigate the NH of the DMN in TLE at rest, and an support vector machine (SVM) method for the diagnosis of rTLE. Methods: A total of 43 rTLE cases and 42 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Imaging data were analyzed with the NH and SVM methods. Results: rTLE patients have a decreased NH in the right inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), but increased NH in the bilateral precuneus (PCu) and right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), compared with HCs. We found that rTLE had a longer performance reaction time (RT). No significant correlation was found between abnormal NH values and clinical variables of the patients. The SVM results showed that increased NH in the bilateral PCu as a diagnostic biomarker distinguished rTLE from HCs with an accuracy of 74.12% (63/85), a sensitivity 72.01% (31/43), and a specificity 72.81% (31/42). Conclusion: These findings suggest that abnormal NH of the DMN exists in rTLE, and highlights the significance of the DMN in the pathophysiology of cognitive problems occurring in rTLE, and the bilateral PCu as a neuroimaging diagnostic biomarker for rTLE. Background: The neuropathophysiological mechanisms of brain damage underlying hypothyroidism remain unclear. Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) has been established as a reliable indicator for investigation of abnormal spontaneous brain activity that occurs at specific frequencies in different types of mental disorder. However, the changes of fALFF in specific frequency bands in hypothyroidism have not yet been investigated., Methods: Fifty-three hypothyroid patients and 39 healthy controls (HCs) underwent thyroid-related hormone levels tests, neuropsychological assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The fALFF in the standard band (0.01-0.1 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and slow-5 bands (0.01-0.027 Hz) were analyzed. An analysis of Pearson correlation was conducted between fALFF, thyroid-related hormone levels, and neuropsychological scores in hypothyroid patients., Results: Compared to HCs, within the routine band, hypothyroidism group showed significantly decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, middle temporal gyrus (MTG), precentral gyrus, calcarine cortex, and right inferior occipital gyrus; within the slow-5 band, the hypothyroidism group exhibited decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, MTG, superior temporal gyrus, postcentral gyrus, and paracentral lobule, and increased fALFF in supplementary motor area (SMA) and right middle frontal gyrus; additionally, fALFF in the left lingual gyrus within the routine and slow-5 bands were negatively correlated with the level of thyroid stimulating hormone., Conclusions: In this study, the slow-5 frequency band exhibits better sensitivity than the standard band in detecting fALFF values. Introduction: Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) spreads rapidly worldwide and causes severe acute respiratory syndrome. The current study aims to evaluate the relationship between the whole-brain functional connections in a resting state and cognitive impairments in patients with COVID-19 compared to the healthy control group., Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) data were obtained from 29 patients of the acute stage of COVID-19 on the third day of admission and 20 healthy controls. Cross-correlation of the mean resting-state signals was determined in the voxels of 23 independent components (IC) of brain neural circuits. To assess cognitive function and neuropsychological status, MoCA was performed on all participants. The relationship between rs-fMRI information, neuropsychological status, and paraclinical data was analyzed., Results: The COVID-19 group got a lower mean MoCA score and showed a significant reduction in the functional connectivity of the IC14 (P<0.001) and IC38 (P<0.001) regions compared to the controls. The increase in functional connectivity was observed in the COVID-19 group compared to the controls at baseline in the default mode network (DMN) IC00 (P<0.001) and dorsal attention network (DAN) IC08 (P<0.001) regions. Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is one of the most distressing concerns for breast cancer survivors, but the neural mechanism underlying FCR remains unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study and recruited 62 breast cancer survivors varying in FCR (31 high-FCR individuals and 31 low-FCR individuals) and compared neuroimaging findings. Data from 3 low-FCR subjects were excluded because they did not complete all experiments. All the participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) were assessed. Breast cancer survivors with high and low FCR significantly differed in the ReHo of the left caudate nucleus and precuneus as well as in the VMHC of the posterior cerebellar lobe, superior frontal gyrus, orbital frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, occipital gyrus, inferior parietal lobule and frontal middle gyrus. FCR was negatively correlated with the mean ReHo of the left caudate nucleus (r = −0.501, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with the mean ReHo of the right precuneus (r = 0.505, p < 0.001). In addition, FCR was positively correlated with the mean VMHC of the bilateral superior occipital gyrus (r = 0.438, p < 0.001). Introduction: Lumbar disc herniation, a chronic degenerative disease, is one of the major contributors to chronic low back pain and disability. Although many studies have been conducted in the past on brain function in chronic low back pain, most of these studies did not classify chronic low back pain (cLBP) patients according to their etiology. The lack of etiologic classification may lead to inconsistencies between findings, and the correlation between differences in brain activation and clinical symptoms in patients with cLBP was less studied in the past., Methods: In this study, 36 lumbar disc herniation patients with chronic low back pain (LDHCP) and 36 healthy controls (HCs) were included to study brain activity abnormalities in LDHCP. Visual analogue scale (VAS), oswestry disability index (ODI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used to assess clinical symptoms., Results: The results showed that LDHCP patients exhibited abnormally increased and diminished activation of brain regions compared to HCs. Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the spontaneous neuronal activity and functional connectivity pattern variations using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) measures, such as amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), and functional connectivity (FC), in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO)., Method: A total of 24 active TAO patients, 26 inactive TAO patients, and 27 matched healthy controls (HCs) were included. First, ALFF and fALFF were used to detect local neural activity changes, the MRI data were analyzed, and regions with group differences were taken as seeds. Second, FC analysis was performed to explore the altered connection between seeds and other brain regions. A correlation analysis was performed to assess the relationship between functional brain activity and clinical indices and neuropsychiatric behaviors., Results: Compared to HCs, both active and inactive TAO patients exhibited significantly lower ALFF values in the right calcarine (Calcarine&#95;R) and left postcentral gyrus (Postcentral&#95;L). Active TAO patients also showed significantly higher ALFF values in the left caudate nucleus (Caudate&#95;L) and increased fALFF values in the superior lobe of the right cerebellum (Cerebelum&#95;Crus1&#95;R). Moreover, both active and inactive TAO patients demonstrated decreased FC within the left postcentral gyrus (Postcentral&#95;L) compared to HCs. Additionally, active TAO patients exhibited lower FC compared to inactive TAO patients. The ALFF values in the Calcarine&#95;R of active TAO patients positively correlated with disease duration (r = 0.5892, p  = 0.0049) and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS; r = 0.5377, p  = 0.0119). Furthermore, the ALFF value in the Calcarine&#95;R of inactive TAO patients negatively correlated with visual functioning (r = -0.5449, p  = 0.0072), while the ALFF values in the Caudate&#95;L of active TAO patients positively correlated with visual functioning (r = 0.6496, p  = 0.0014)., Conclusion: We found that the Caudate&#95;L and Cerebelum&#95;Crus1&#95;R related to motor control and coordination in active TAO patients exhibit significant compensatory mechanisms; whereas, the Calcarine&#95;R and Postcentral&#95;L related to visual and somatosensory cortices show varying degrees of impairment. Objectives: Migraine is often combined with vestibular dysfunction, particularly in patients with chronic migraine (CM). However, the pathogenesis of migraine chronification leading to vestibular dysfunction is not fully understood. The current study investigated whether structural or functional impairments to the brain during migraine chronification could be associated with vestibular dysfunction development., Methods: The eligible participants underwent clinical assessment and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) determined structural impairment by evaluating alterations in gray matter volume (GMV). Functional impairment was assessed by the mean amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (mALFF). Furthermore, the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of regions possessing impairment was examined with a seed-based approach. We also analyzed the correlations between altered neuroimaging features with clinical variables and performed multiple linear regression., Results: Eighteen CM patients, 18 episodic migraine (EM) patients, and 18 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. A one-way ANOVA indicated the group differences in mALFF. These were located within right supramarginal gyrus (SMG), left angular gyrus (AG), middle frontal gyrus (MFG), left middle occipital gyrus (MOG), right rolandic operculum (Rol) and left superior parietal gyrus (SPG). During rsFC analysis, the CM group had more enhanced rsFC of left SPG with left MOG than the EM and HC groups. The EM group revealed enhanced rsFC of left SPG with left AG than the CM and HC groups. In multiple linear regression, after controlling for age, body mass index (BMI) and disease duration, the rsFC of left SPG with left MOG (β = 48.896, p = 0.021) was found to predict the total Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) score with an explained variance of 25.1%. Moreover, the rsFC of left SPG with left MOG (β = 1.253, p = 0.003) and right SMG (β = -1.571, p = 0.049) were significant predictors of migraine frequency, accounting for a total explained variance of 73.8%., Conclusion: The functional impairments due to migraine chronification are primarily concentrated in the multisensory integration-related brain regions. Additionally, the rsFC of SPG with MOG can predict the frequency of migraine and the degree of vestibular dysfunction. Background: Apathy is among the most prevalent and incapacitating non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). PD patients with apathy (PD-A) have been reported to have abnormal spontaneous brain activity mainly in 0.01-0.08 Hz. However, the frequency-dependence of brain activity in PD-A remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether abnormalities in PD-A are associated with specific frequency bands., Materials and Methods: Overall, 28 patients with PD-A, 19 PD patients without apathy (PD-NA), and 32 gender-, age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data, demographic information, and neuropsychological assessments, including apathy, depression, anxiety and cognitive function for every participant. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and degree centrality (DC) were calculated in the conventional (0.01-0.08 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and slow-5 (0.01-0.027 Hz) frequency bands based on statistical parametric mapping (SPM12) and RESTplus V1.25. Two-sample t -tests were performed to compare the differences among the three groups., Results: PD-A reduced ALFF in the right anterior cingulate gyri in the slow-5 band and decreased fALFF in the right middle frontal gyrus in the conventional band, compared to patients with PD-NA. However, PerAF, ReHo, and DC could not distinguish PD-A from PD-NA in the three bands. PD-A had higher ALFF and fALFF in the left middle occipital gyrus and lower fALFF in the bilateral insula in the slow-5 band compared to the HCs. Furthermore, abnormal DC value in hippocampus and parahippocampus was observed separately in the conventional band and in the slow-4 band between PD-A and HCs. Moreover, PD-A and PD-NA showed lower ReHo in cerebellum in the three bands compared to the HCs., Conclusion: Our study revealed that PD-A and PD-NA might have different neurophysiological mechanisms. Concurrently, the ALFF in the slow-5 band and fALFF in the conventional band were sensitive in differentiating PD-A from PD-NA. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has been actively used in the last decade to investigate brain functional connectivity alterations in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) to understand the neuropathophysiology of T2DM in cognitive degeneration. Given the emergence of new analysis techniques, this scoping review aims to map the rs-fMRI analysis techniques that have been applied in the literature and reports the latest rs-fMRI findings that have not been covered in previous reviews. Graph theory, the contemporary rs-fMRI analysis, has been used to demonstrate altered brain topological organisations in people with T2DM, which included altered degree centrality, functional connectivity strength, the small-world architecture and network-based statistics. These alterations were correlated with T2DM patients' cognitive performances. Graph theory also contributes to identify unbiased seeds for seed-based analysis. Background and Objective: While evidence has demonstrated that the default-mode network (DMN) plays a key role in the broad-scale cognitive problems that occur in right temporal lobe epilepsy (rTLE), little is known about alterations in the network homogeneity (NH) of the DMN in TLE. In this study, we used the NH method to investigate the NH of the DMN in TLE at rest, and an support vector machine (SVM) method for the diagnosis of rTLE., Methods: A total of 43 rTLE cases and 42 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Imaging data were analyzed with the NH and SVM methods., Results: rTLE patients have a decreased NH in the right inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), but increased NH in the bilateral precuneus (PCu) and right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), compared with HCs. We found that rTLE had a longer performance reaction time (RT). No significant correlation was found between abnormal NH values and clinical variables of the patients. The SVM results showed that increased NH in the bilateral PCu as a diagnostic biomarker distinguished rTLE from HCs with an accuracy of 74.12% (63/85), a sensitivity 72.01% (31/43), and a specificity 72.81% (31/42)., Conclusion: These findings suggest that abnormal NH of the DMN exists in rTLE, and highlights the significance of the DMN in the pathophysiology of cognitive problems occurring in rTLE, and the bilateral PCu as a neuroimaging diagnostic biomarker for rTLE., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest. Background: Large-scale functional connectivity (LSFC) patterns in the brain have unique intrinsic characteristics. Abnormal LSFC patterns have been found in patients with dementia, as well as in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and these patterns predicted their cognitive performance. It has been reported that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) may develop MCI that could progress to dementia. We investigated whether we could adopt LSFC patterns as discriminative features to predict the cognitive function of patients with T2DM, using connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) and a support vector machine., Aim: To investigate the utility of LSFC for predicting cognitive impairment related to T2DM more accurately and reliably., Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance images were derived from 42 patients with T2DM and 24 healthy controls. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Patients with T2DM were divided into two groups, according to the presence (T2DM-C; n = 16) or absence (T2DM-NC; n = 26) of MCI. Brain regions were marked using Harvard Oxford (HOA-112), automated anatomical labeling (AAL-116), and 264-region functional (Power-264) atlases. LSFC biomarkers for predicting MoCA scores were identified using a new CPM technique. Subsequently, we used a support vector machine based on LSFC patterns for among-group differentiation. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve determined the appearance of the classification., Results: CPM could predict the MoCA scores in patients with T2DM (Pearson's correlation coefficient between predicted and actual MoCA scores, r = 0.32, P =0.0066 [HOA-112 atlas]; r = 0.32, P =0.0078 [AAL-116 atlas]; r = 0.42, P =0.0038 [Power-264 atlas]), indicating that LSFC patterns represent cognition-level measures in these patients. Positive (anti-correlated) LSFC networks based on the Power-264 atlas showed the best predictive performance; moreover, we observed new brain regions of interest associated with T2DM-related cognition. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values (T2DM-NC group vs. T2DM-C group) were 0.65-0.70, with LSFC matrices based on HOA-112 and Power-264 atlases having the highest value (0.70).
