Understanding the climate and carbon cycle response to negative CO2 emissions is important for developing climate mitigation strategies that aim to limit global warming to a specific threshold. In this study, using a coupled climate and carbon cycle model, a novel set of nine stylized simulations are conducted with cumulative emissions of 1,000 GtC, 2,000 GtC, and 5,000 GtC over 150, 250, and 500 years, followed by identical cumulative negative emissions so that the net cumulative emissions are zero. On millennial‐timescales, the climate system returns close to the preindustrial state, independent of the emission and removal pathways. However, the thermal and biogeochemical inertia of the ocean play an important role in determining the climate and carbon cycle response during the emission and removal phases. When zero net emissions are reached, surface air temperature is larger by 0–1°C than the preindustrial state, and the atmospheric CO2 concentration is less by 12–29 ppm. These changes increase with both the magnitude and duration of the emission and removal pulses. In contrast, hysteresis in the relationship between global mean surface temperature and cumulative carbon emissions increases with the magnitude but decreases with the duration of emission and removal pulses. Our study highlights the role of ocean inertia in the asymmetry in climate response to emissions and removals and indicates that an earlier emission reduction implying emission/removal pathways with smaller magnitudes and shorter durations for the positive and negative emission pulses would avoid larger climate and carbon cycle impacts on centennial‐timescales. Based on recent interest and on the importance of the ongoing climate change catastrophe, this article provides the basics of global carbon cycle modelling as required for the assessment of the degree of carbon neutrality of biomass energy, and its underlying dynamics. It is aimed at clarifying the question "Are biomass fuels carbon neutral?". The "Combined Energy and Biosphere Model" (CEBM) computes annual carbon flows including growth and decay of plants on 2.5 × 2.5° grid elements of the continents' surface and offers detailed results on the changes of after implementation of large-scale biomass energy strategies worldwide. The main (and possibly unexpected) effect is the long-term depletion of the soil organic compartment after extraction of biomass fuels. When comparing CEBM model runs using (i) biomass energy sources and (ii) carbon-free energy sources (such as solar or wind), it becomes quantitatively clear already on the theoretical level (i.e., even without taking into account efficiency losses) that biomass is only "half as carbon neutral" as ideally assumed, to express a rule of thumb—mainly because of soil carbon depletion. Monitoring forest carbon (C) stocks is essential to better assess their role in the global carbon balance, and to better model and predict long-term trends and inter-annual variability in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. On a national scale, national forest inventories (NFIs) can provide estimates of forest carbon stocks, but these estimates are only available in certain countries, are limited by time lags due to periodic revisits, and cannot provide spatially continuous mapping of forests. In this context, remote sensing offers many advantages for monitoring above-ground biomass (AGB) on a global scale with good spatial (50-100 m) and temporal (annual) resolutions. Remote sensing has been used for several decades to monitor vegetation. However, traditional methods of monitoring AGB using optical or microwave sensors are affected by saturation effects for moderately or densely vegetated canopies, limiting their performance. Low-frequency passive microwave remote sensing is less affected by these saturation effects: saturation only occurs at AGB levels of around 400 t/ha at L-band (frequency of around 1.4 GHz). Despite its coarse spatial resolution of the order of 25 km × 25 km, this method based on the L-VOD (vegetation optical depth at L-band) index has recently established itself as an essential approach for monitoring annual variations in forest AGB on a continental scale. Thus, L-VOD has been applied to forest monitoring in many continents and biomes: in the tropics (especially in the Amazon and Congo basins), in boreal regions (Siberia, Canada), in Europe, China, Australia, etc. However, no reference study has yet been published to analyze L-VOD in detail in terms of capabilities, validation and results. This paper fills this gap by presenting the physical principles of L-VOD calculation, analyzing the performance of L-VOD for monitoring AGB and reviewing the main applications of L-VOD for tracking the carbon balance of global vegetation over the last decade (2010-2019). AbstractModels are used in a wide variety of scientific disciplines to mathematically and simply represent real phenomenon, to understand and explain observed behaviors, and to make predictions of future behaviors. A compartmental model is a type of model that is used to evaluate an experimental investigation concerning transport of material in a system of the real world. Sensitivity analysis (SA) of models is required to investigate the effects of changes in the inputs on the model output(s). When dealing with large, complex, computationally expensive models, screening methods are essential to reduce the dimensionality of the input space for a subsequent SA which can help to determine and quantify the change in model behavior as model factors change. In this study, our focus is on the application of screening designs to a 25-compartment global carbon cycle model, which help us identify the most important input factors that control most of the output uncertainty. Summary: The frequent trade within and beyond the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has prospered the economy but has also expanded carbon emissions. Here, through a multi-regional environmental input-output analysis framework, we explore the patterns and inter-sectoral linkage of trade-embodied carbon emissions among BRI countries during 2015–2019. Then, a dynamic data envelopment analysis model considering carbon inequality as a non-discretionary input is constructed to assess the carbon emission efficiency of the identified key sector. We find that trade-embodied carbon emissions in the BRI steadily increased during 2015–2019. The manufacturing sector was identified as the key sector, exhibiting an overall efficiency of 0.6268 on average, with significant efficiency disparities. Moreover, we validate the positive role of efficiency enhancement in carbon emission mitigation, as well as the negative moderating effect of carbon inequality. Overall, this study provides optimal collaboration and initiatives to mitigate trade-embodied carbon emissions among BRI countries deeply.

We explore the response of the Earth’s coupled climate and carbon system to an idealized sequential addition and removal of CO2 to the atmosphere, following a symmetric and continuous emissions pathway, in contrast to the discontinuous emissions pathways that have largely informed our understanding of the climate response to net zero and net negative emissions to date. We find, using both an Earth system model and an ensemble of simple climate model realizations, that warming during the emissions reduction and negative emissions phases is defined by a combination of a proportionality of warming to cumulative emissions characterized by the transient climate response to emissions (TCRE), and a deviation from that proportionality that is governed by the zero emissions commitment (ZEC). About half of the ZEC is realized before reaching zero emissions, and the ZEC thus also controls the timing between peak cumulative CO2 emissions and peak temperature, such that peak temperature may occur before peak cumulative emissions if ZEC is negative, underscoring the importance of ZEC in climate policies aimed to limit peak warming. Thus we argue that ZEC is better defined as the committed warming relative to the expected TCRE proportionality, rather than as the additional committed warming that will occur after reaching net zero CO2 emissions. Once established, the combined TCRE and ZEC relationship holds almost to complete removal of prior cumulative CO2 emissions. As cumulative CO2 emissions approach zero through negative CO2 emissions, CO2 concentrations drop below preindustrial values, while residual long-term climate change continues, governed by multicentennial dynamical processes.

In recent decades, the ocean CO2 uptake has increased in response to rising atmospheric CO2. Yet, physical climate change also affects the ocean CO2 uptake, but magnitude and driving processes are poorly understood. Using a global ocean biogeochemistry model, we find that without climate change, the mean carbon uptake 2000–2019 would have been 13% higher and the trend 1958–2019 would have been 27% higher. Changes in wind are the dominant driver of the climate effect on CO2 uptake as they affect advective carbon transport and mixing, but the effect of warming increases over time. Roughly half of the globally integrated wind‐driven trend stems from the subpolar Southern Ocean and polar oceans in both hemispheres. Warming reduces the solubility of CO2 and acts rather homogeneously over the world oceans. However, the warming effect on pCO2 is dampened by limited exchange of surface and deep waters. Because the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased through man‐made CO2 emissions, the ocean has taken up an increasing amount of CO2 (about 25% of the emissions). Beside the atmospheric CO2 concentration, other climate variables affect the oceanic CO2 uptake: Firstly, winds set the ocean in motion, drive ocean currents and thus control the transport of dissolved forms of CO2 with ocean circulation. In particular, winds drive the exchange between the surface ocean and the deep ocean, where the bigger part of the ocean's carbon is stored. Secondly, global warming affects the oceanic CO2 uptake because the solubility of CO2 in water is temperature‐dependent. In recent decades, changes in winds and global warming have reduced the capacity of the ocean to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Yet, this climate effect is not well understood. Here, we use computer simulations from 1958 to 2019 to quantify the climate effect and find that climate change reduced the oceanic CO2 uptake of the last two decades by 13%, with winds having more of an effect than sea surface warming. Summary: Leaf dark respiration (Rd) acclimates to environmental changes. However, the magnitude, controls and time scales of acclimation remain unclear and are inconsistently treated in ecosystem models.We hypothesized that Rd and Rubisco carboxylation capacity (Vcmax) at 25°C (Rd,25, Vcmax,25) are coordinated so that Rd,25 variations support Vcmax,25 at a level allowing full light use, with Vcmax,25 reflecting daytime conditions (for photosynthesis), and Rd,25/Vcmax,25 reflecting night‐time conditions (for starch degradation and sucrose export). We tested this hypothesis temporally using a 5‐yr warming experiment, and spatially using an extensive field‐measurement data set. We compared the results to three published alternatives: Rd,25 declines linearly with daily average prior temperature; Rd at average prior night temperatures tends towards a constant value; and Rd,25/Vcmax,25 is constant.Our hypothesis accounted for more variation in observed Rd,25 over time (R2 = 0.74) and space (R2 = 0.68) than the alternatives. Night‐time temperature dominated the seasonal time‐course of Rd, with an apparent response time scale of c. 2 wk. Vcmax dominated the spatial patterns.Our acclimation hypothesis results in a smaller increase in global Rd in response to rising CO2 and warming than is projected by the two of three alternative hypotheses, and by current models. The characteristic time scales of the response of the globally averaged climate model with the carbon cycle to external forcing with analysis of the spectrum of the linearized evolution operator of the corresponding dynamic system are evaluated. The model exhibits response time scales of about 4–6 years (related to the carbon dynamics in vegetation) and in the range of 20–100 years (related to the carbon dynamics in nonhumified soil reservoirs). When taking into account the effect of humification, the model reveals the time scale of the response, which is on the order of several millennia. For a closed carbon cycle, the time scale is 102 years, which characterizes the joint variations in the atmospheric and oceanic reservoirs. Understanding the origins and processes of riverine dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is crucial for predicting the global carbon cycle with projected, more frequent climate extremes yet our knowledge has remained fragmented. Here we ask: How and how much do DIC production and export vary across space (shallow vs. deep, uphill vs. depression) and time (daily, seasonal, and annual)? How do the relative contributions of biogenic (soil respiration) and geogenic (carbonate weathering) sources differ under different temperature and hydrological conditions? We answer these questions using a catchment‐scale reactive transport model constrained by stream flow, stable water isotopes, stream DIC, and carbon isotope data from a headwater karstic catchment in southwest China in a subtropical monsoon climate. Results show climate seasonality regulates the timing of DIC production and export. In hot‐wet seasons, high temperature accelerates soil respiration and carbonate weathering (up to a factor of three) via elevating soil CO2 and carbonate solubility, whereas high discharge enhances export by two orders of magnitude compared to cold‐dry seasons. Carbonate weathering is driven more by soil CO2 than water flow. At the annual scale, 92.9% and 7.1% of DIC was produced in shallow and deep zone, respectively, whereas 64.5% and 35.5% of DIC was exported from shallow and deep zone, respectively. These results highlight the uniqueness of subtropical karst areas as synchronous reactors and transporters of DIC during the hot‐wet monsoon, contrasting the asynchronous production and export in other climate regions. A future hotter and wetter climate with more intensive storms in the region may further intensify DIC production and export, accentuating the potential of subtropical karst regions as global hot spots for carbon cycling. Plain Language Summary: Understanding the origins and movement of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in rivers is crucial for comprehending global carbon dynamics. Here we used a model and field data from a karstic region in southwest China to understand these processes. We found that the hot and wet seasons are important for both DIC production and export to the stream, because the warm temperature and rapid water movement speeds up the breakdown of soil carbon and rocks into DIC. In addition, the shallow soil produces more DIC compared to deeper rocks. The origins of DIC also vary with the seasons. In the hot‐wet season, it mostly comes from living things in the soil, while in the cold‐dry season, it comes more from non‐living sources like rocks. This work suggests that karst formations in hot‐wet monsoon climates might be significant in capturing CO2. Summary: The aviation industry’s emissions have had a significant impact on global climate change. This study focuses on carbon emission trading schemes, sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), and hydrogen energy, as vital means for the aviation industry to reduce emissions. To evaluate the climate effects of global routes under four scenarios (24 sub-scenarios) until 2100, this study proposes the Aviation-FAIR (Aviation-Finite Amplitude Impulse Response) method. The findings reveal that while CO2 emissions and concentrations are significant, other emissions, such as N2O and CH4, have a greater effective radiative forcing (ERF) and contribute significantly to climate change. Moreover, SAFs are more effective in mitigating airline pollutant emissions than relying solely on carbon trading schemes. The effectiveness of hydrogen fuel cells may be hindered by technical limitations compared to hydrogen turbine engines. The findings of this study provide reference for the global aviation industry to adopt emission reduction measures.

Summary: While artificial intelligence drives remarkable progress in natural sciences, its broader societal implications are mostly disregarded. In this study, we evaluate environmental impacts of deep learning in materials science through extensive benchmarking. In particular, a set of diverse neural networks is trained for a given supervised learning task to assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during training and inference phases. A chronological perspective showed diminishing returns, manifesting themselves as a 28% decrease in mean absolute error and nearly a 15,000% increase in the carbon footprint of model training in 2016–2022. By means of up-to-date graphics processing units, it is possible to partially offset the immense growth of GHG emissions. Nonetheless, the practice of employing energy-efficient hardware is overlooked by the materials informatics community, as follows from a literature analysis in the field. On the basis of our findings, we encourage researchers to report GHG emissions together with standard performance metrics.

Summary: Spatio-temporal variability of sediment-mediated methane (CH4) production in freshwater lakes causes large uncertainties in predicting global lake CH4 emissions under different climate change and eutrophication scenarios. We conducted extensive sediment incubation experiments to investigate CH4 fluxes in Lake Stechlin, a deep, stratified temperate lake. Our results show contrasting spatial patterns in CH4 fluxes between littoral and profundal sites. The littoral sediments, ∼33% of the total sediment surface area, contributed ∼86.9% of the annual CH4 flux at the sediment-water interface. Together with sediment organic carbon quality, seasonal stratification is responsible for the striking spatial difference in sediment CH4 production between littoral and profundal zones owing to more sensitive CH4 production than oxidation to warming. While profundal sediments produce a relatively small amount of CH4, its production increases markedly as anoxia spreads in late summer. Our measurements indicate that future lake CH4 emissions will increase due to climate warming and concomitant hypoxia/anoxia.

Lateral carbon transport through the land-to-ocean-aquatic-continuum (LOAC) represents a key component of the global carbon cycle. This LOAC involves complex processes, many of which are prone to anthropogenic perturbation, yet the influence of natural and human-induced drivers remains poorly constrained. This study examines the radiocarbon (14C) signatures of particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC, DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) transported by Swiss rivers to assess controls on sources and cycling of carbon within their watersheds. Twenty-one rivers were selected and sampled during high-flow conditions in summer 2021, a year of exceptionally high rainfall. Δ14C values of POC range from −446‰ to −158‰, while corresponding ranges of Δ14C values for DOC and DIC are −377‰ to −43‰ and −301‰ to −40‰, respectively, indicating the prevalence of pre-aged carbon. Region-specific agricultural practices seem to have an influential effect on all three carbon phases in rivers draining the Swiss Plateau. Based on Multivariate Regression Analysis, mean basin elevation correlated negatively with Δ14C values of all three carbon phases. These contrasts between alpine terrain and the lowlands reflect the importance of overriding ecoregional controls on riverine carbon dynamics within Switzerland, despite high spatial variability in catchment properties. We provide here a model-based estimate of the transit time of carbon through the terrestrial biosphere, since the time of carbon uptake through photosynthesis until its release through respiration. We explored the consequences of increasing productivity versus increasing respiration rates on the transit time distribution and found that while higher respiration rates induced by higher temperature increase the transit time because older carbon is respired, increases in productivity cause a decline in transit times because more young carbon is available to supply increased metabolism. The combined effect of increases in temperature and productivity results in a decrease in transit times, with the productivity effect dominating over the respiration effect. By using an ensemble of simulation trajectories from the Carbon Data Model Framework (CARDAMOM), we obtained time-dependent transit time distributions incorporating the twentieth century global change. In these simulations, transit time declined over the twentieth century, suggesting an increased productivity effect that augmented the amount of respired young carbon, but also increasing the release of old carbon from high latitudes. The transit time distribution of carbon becomes more asymmetric over time, with more carbon transiting faster through tropical and temperate regions, and older carbon being respired from high latitude regions. Satellite retrievals of the column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) have been widely used to infer spatial and temporal variations of carbon fluxes through atmospheric inversion techniques. In this study, we present a global spatially resolved terrestrial and ocean carbon flux dataset for 2015–2022. The dataset was generated by the Global ObservatioN-based system for monitoring Greenhouse GAses (GONGGA) atmospheric inversion system through the assimilation of Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) XCO2 retrievals. We describe the carbon budget, interannual variability, and seasonal cycle for the global scale and a set of TransCom regions. The 8-year mean net biosphere exchange and ocean carbon fluxes were −2.22 ± 0.75 PgC yr−1 and –2.32 ± 0.18 PgC yr−1, absorbing approximately 23 % and 24 % of contemporary fossil fuel CO2 emissions, respectively. The annual mean global atmospheric CO2 growth rate was 5.17 ± 0.68 PgC yr−1, which is consistent with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) measurement (5.24 ± 0.59 PgC yr−1). Europe has the largest terrestrial sink among the 11 TransCom land regions, followed by Boreal Asia and Temperate Asia. The dataset was evaluated by comparing posterior CO2 simulations with the observations from Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) and Observation Package (ObsPack). Compared with CO2 simulations using the unoptimized fluxes, the bias and root mean square error of posterior CO2 simulations were largely reduced across the full range of locations, confirming that the GONGGA system improves the estimates of spatial and temporal variations in carbon fluxes by assimilating OCO-2 XCO2 data. Permafrost degradation is altering biogeochemical processes throughout the Arctic. Thaw‐induced changes in organic matter transformations and mineral weathering reactions are impacting fluxes of inorganic carbon (IC) and alkalinity (ALK) in Arctic rivers. However, the net impact of these changing fluxes on the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (pCO2) is relatively unconstrained. Resolving this uncertainty is important as thaw‐driven changes in the fluxes of IC and ALK could produce feedbacks in the global carbon cycle. Enhanced production of sulfuric acid through sulfide oxidation is particularly poorly quantified despite its potential to remove ALK from the ocean‐atmosphere system and increase pCO2, producing a positive feedback leading to more warming and permafrost degradation. In this work, we quantified weathering in the Koyukuk River, a major tributary of the Yukon River draining discontinuous permafrost in central Alaska, based on water and sediment samples collected near the village of Huslia in summer 2018. Using measurements of major ion abundances and sulfate (SO42− ${{\text{SO}}_{4}}^{2-}$) sulfur (34S/32S) and oxygen (18O/16O) isotope ratios, we employed the MEANDIR inversion model to quantify the relative importance of a suite of weathering processes and their net impact on pCO2. Calculations found that approximately 80% of SO42− ${{\text{SO}}_{4}}^{2-}$ in mainstem samples derived from sulfide oxidation with the remainder from evaporite dissolution. Moreover, 34S/32S ratios, 13C/12C ratios of dissolved IC, and sulfur X‐ray absorption spectra of mainstem, secondary channel, and floodplain pore fluid and sediment samples revealed modest degrees of microbial sulfate reduction within the floodplain. Weathering fluxes of ALK and IC result in lower values of pCO2 over timescales shorter than carbonate compensation (∼104 yr) and, for mainstem samples, higher values of pCO2 over timescales longer than carbonate compensation but shorter than the residence time of marine SO42− ${{\text{SO}}_{4}}^{2-}$ (∼107 yr). Furthermore, the absolute concentrations of SO42− ${{\text{SO}}_{4}}^{2-}$ and Mg2+ in the Koyukuk River, as well as the ratios of SO42− ${{\text{SO}}_{4}}^{2-}$ and Mg2+ to other dissolved weathering products, have increased over the past 50 years. Through analogy to similar trends in the Yukon River, we interpret these changes as reflecting enhanced sulfide oxidation due to ongoing exposure of previously frozen sediment and changes in the contributions of shallow and deep flow paths to the active channel. Overall, these findings confirm that sulfide oxidation is a substantial outcome of permafrost degradation and that the sulfur cycle responds to permafrost thaw with a timescale‐dependent feedback on warming. Abstract In recent decades, the ocean CO2 uptake has increased in response to rising atmospheric CO2. Yet, physical climate change also affects the ocean CO2 uptake, but magnitude and driving processes are poorly understood. Using a global ocean biogeochemistry model, we find that without climate change, the mean carbon uptake 2000–2019 would have been 13% higher and the trend 1958–2019 would have been 27% higher. Changes in wind are the dominant driver of the climate effect on CO2 uptake as they affect advective carbon transport and mixing, but the effect of warming increases over time. Roughly half of the globally integrated wind‐driven trend stems from the subpolar Southern Ocean and polar oceans in both hemispheres. Warming reduces the solubility of CO2 and acts rather homogeneously over the world oceans. However, the warming effect on pCO2 is dampened by limited exchange of surface and deep waters.

Based on recent interest and on the importance of the ongoing climate change catastrophe, this article provides the basics of global carbon cycle modelling as required for the assessment of the degree of carbon neutrality of biomass energy, and its underlying dynamics. It is aimed at clarifying the question “Are biomass fuels carbon neutral?”. The “Combined Energy and Biosphere Model” (CEBM) computes annual carbon flows including growth and decay of plants on 2.5 × 2.5° grid elements of the continents’ surface and offers detailed results on the changes of after implementation of large-scale biomass energy strategies worldwide. The main (and possibly unexpected) effect is the long-term depletion of the soil organic compartment after extraction of biomass fuels. When comparing CEBM model runs using (i) biomass energy sources and (ii) carbon-free energy sources (such as solar or wind), it becomes quantitatively clear already on the theoretical level (i.e., even without taking into account efficiency losses) that biomass is only “half as carbon neutral” as ideally assumed, to express a rule of thumb—mainly because of soil carbon depletion. Still, biomass energy will play an important role when fighting global warming, even if efforts to lower energy demand are preferable as a fundamental strategy.

The conversion of CO2 to value-added products powered with solar energy is an ideal solution to establishing a closed carbon cycle. Combining microorganisms with light-harvesting nanomaterials into photosynthetic biohybrid systems (PBSs) presents an approach to reaching this solution. Metabolic pathways precisely evolved for CO2 fixation selectively and reliably generate products. Nanomaterials harvest solar light and biocompatibly associate with microorganisms owing to similar lengths scales. Although this is a nascent field, a variety of approaches have been implemented encompassing different microorganisms and nanomaterials. To advance the field in an impactful manner, it is paramount to understand the molecular underpinnings of PBSs. In this perspective, we highlight studies inspecting charge uptake pathways and singularities in photosensitized cells. We discuss further analyses to more completely elucidate these constructs, and we focus on criteria to be met for designing photosensitizing nanomaterials. As a result, we advocate for the pairing of microorganisms with naturally occurring and highly biocompatible mineral-based semiconductor nanomaterials.

The carbon dynamics in soils is of great importance due to its links to the global carbon cycle. The prediction of the behavior of native soil organic carbon (SOC) and organic amendments via incubation studies and mathematical modeling may bridge the knowledge gap in understanding complex soil ecosystems. Three alkaline Typic Ustochrepts and one Typic Halustalf with sandy, loamy sand, and clay loam texture, varying in percent SOC of 0.2; S1, 0.42; S2, 0.67; S3 and 0.82; S4 soils, were amended with wheat straw (WS), WS + P, sesbania green manure (GM), and poultry manure (PM) on 0.5% C rate at field capacity (FC) and ponding (P) moisture levels and incubated at 35 °C for 1, 15, 30 and 45 d. Carbon mineralization was determined via the alkali titration method after 1, 5, 7 14, 21, and 28 d. The SOC and inorganic carbon contents were determined from dried up (50 °C) soil samples after 1, 15, 30, and 45 d of incubation. Carbon from residue mineralization was determined by subtracting the amount of CO2-C evolved from control soils. The kinetic models; monocomponent first order, two-component first order, and modified Gompertz equations were fitted to the carbon mineralization data from native and added carbon. The SOC decomposition was dependent upon soil properties, and moisture, however, added C was relatively independent. The carbon from PM was immobilized in S4. All the models fitted to the data predicted carbon mineralization in a similar range with few exceptions. The residues lead to the OC build-up in fine-textured soils having relatively high OC and cation exchange capacities. Whereas, fast degradation of applied OC in coarse-textured soils leads to faster mineralization and lower build-up from residues. The decline in CaCO3 after incubation was higher at FC than in the P moisture regime.

Societal activities massively alter the global carbon (C) cycle, thereby driving global climate heating. Socioeconomic material stocks - e.g. in buildings and infrastructures - have been identified as a C pool that can potentially store increasing amounts of C, thereby keeping C away from the atmosphere. However, little is known about the size, composition, distribution and development of global socioeconomic C stocks. Based on an established economy-wide C accounting approach from sociometabolic research, we consistently and comprehensively quantified the C contained in eight components of socioeconomic stocks in the period 1900–2015 at the level of nine world regions. We discern inert (aggregates and other gravel) and ‘active’ climate-relevant (i.e. biomass and fossil-fuel based) C pools. We find that global active components of socioeconomic C stocks grew by a factor of 9, from 1.9 (1.5–2.2) Pg of carbon (PgC) to 16.8 (13.7–20.2) PgC. The inert socioeconomic C stock in aggregates & other gravel amounted to 25.2 (6.1–48.0) PgC in 2015, however with high uncertainties. Absolute annual net additions to stock (NAS) of active stock components was 0.49 (0.40–0.59) PgC yr ^−1 which equaled 5% of the C emissions from fossil fuel combustion and industrial processes. However, raising NAS of components with biomass feedstock that sequester C from the atmosphere comes with biodiversity and food security trade-offs. This study contributes to a holistic perspective on social and natural C stocks that acknowledges their interactions. The global socioeconomic C stock reached a geologically relevant extent (approximately the size of C in coasts) and should therefore be integrated in the assessments of the global C cycle to acknowledge the Anthropocene.

Several methods have been developed to quantify the oceanic accumulation of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) in response to rising atmospheric CO2. Yet, we still lack a corresponding estimate of the changes in the total oceanic dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). In addition to the increase in anthropogenic CO2, changes in DIC also include alterations of natural CO2. Once integrated globally, changes in DIC reflect the net oceanic sink for atmospheric CO2, complementary to estimates of the air‐sea CO2 exchange based on surface measurements. Here, we extend the MOBO‐DIC machine learning approach by Keppler et al. (2020a, https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/metadata/landing-page/bin/iso?id=gov.noaa.nodc%3A0221526) to estimate global monthly fields of DIC at 1° resolution over the top 1,500 m from 2004 through 2019. We find that over these 16 years and extrapolated to cover the whole global ocean down to 4,000 m, the oceanic DIC pool increased close to linearly at an average rate of 3.2 ± 0.7 Pg C yr−1. This trend is statistically indistinguishable from current estimates of the oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 over the same period. Thus, our study implies no detectable net loss or gain of natural CO2 by the ocean, albeit the large uncertainties could be masking it. Our reconstructions suggest substantial internal redistributions of natural oceanic CO2, with a shift from the midlatitudes to the tropics and from the surface to below ∼200 m. Such redistributions correspond with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. The interannual variability of DIC is strongest in the tropical Western Pacific, consistent with the El Nin∼ $\tilde{n}$o Southern Oscillation. The southeastern China (SEC) forest is an important terrestrial biospheric carbon sink in the global carbon cycle, with its total net ecosystem exchange (NEE) accounting for about 3.2% of the global forest NEE. The prevailing atmospheric intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs) over East Asia strongly modulate climatic conditions over the SEC during spring and summer, thus leading to significant ISOs in the NEE of the SEC forest. As atmospheric ISOs show strong seasonality, this study examined the distinctive impacts of atmospheric ISOs on the NEE of the SEC forest between spring and summer.During spring, the vertical coupling of 10–30-d atmospheric ISOs in the lower and upper troposphere leads to strong 10‒30-d ISOs of solar radiation and temperature over the SEC. The 10‒30-d ISOs of solar radiation and temperature further result in the 10‒30-d ISOs of gross primary productivity (GPP) and terrestrial ecosystem respiration (TER). With the covariation in GPP and TER, the NEE of the SEC forest exhibits significant 10‒30-d ISOs. In contrast, the intraseasonal variations in climatic conditions over the SEC are associated with the 15‒60-d tropical atmospheric ISO during summer. While the induced 15‒60-d ISO of solar radiation leads to that of GPP, the induced 15‒60-d ISO of temperature is small and less effective; thus, the 15‒60-d ISO of NEE mainly originates from that of GPP.

Export of sinking particles from the surface ocean is critical for carbon sequestration and to provide energy to the deep biosphere. The magnitude and spatial patterns of this export have been estimated in the past by in situ particle flux observations, satellite‐based algorithms, and ocean biogeochemical models; however, these estimates remain uncertain. Here, we use a recent machine learning reconstruction of global ocean particle size distributions (PSDs) from Underwater Vision Profiler 5 measurements to estimate carbon fluxes by sinking particles (35 μm–5 mm equivalent spherical diameter) from the surface ocean. We combine global maps of PSD properties with empirical relationships constrained against in situ flux observations to calculate particulate carbon export from the euphotic zone (5.8 ± 0.1 Pg C y−1) and annual maximum mixed layer depths (6.1 ± 0.1 Pg C y−1). The new flux reconstructions suggest a less variable seasonal cycle in the tropical ocean and a more persistent export in the Southern Ocean than previously recognized. Smaller particles (less than 418 μm) contribute most of the flux globally, while larger particles become more important at high latitudes and in tropical upwelling regions. Export from the annual maximum mixed layer exceeds that from the euphotic zone over most of the low‐latitude ocean, suggesting shallow particle recycling and net heterotrophy in the deep euphotic zone. These estimates open the way to fully three‐dimensional global reconstructions of particle fluxes in the ocean, supported by the growing database of in situ optical observations. Projections of future climate change for given CO2 and other greenhouse gas emission scenarios depend on the response of global climate‐carbon cycle feedback, which consists of carbon‐concentration feedback (e.g., CO2 physiology effect on land carbon sink) and carbon‐climate feedback (e.g., CO2 radiative effect on land carbon sink). Previous studies have assumed no significant interaction between these two feedbacks within the Earth system. This study quantifies the interaction of these two feedbacks, or the nonlinear feedback on land using the fully, biogeochemically, and radiatively coupled simulations under a 1% yr−1 CO2 increase path from nine Earth system models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The results show that the nonlinear feedback is 1.64 ± 2.92 × 10−2 GtC ppm−1 K−1 at the end of 140‐year simulation with a quadrupling CO2 (4 × CO2), where its strength is 11% ± 18% of the carbon‐concentration feedback or −27% ± 49% of the carbon‐climate feedback on land. Compared to previous assumptions that did not consider this interaction, the nonlinear feedback contributes about 8% ± 12% of the land carbon increase accumulated at the 4 × CO2. The nonlinear feedback largely results from the combined effect of increased CO2‐induced additional fertilization effect on warming‐induced additional leaf area index and vegetation productivity over the Northern Hemisphere. The magnitude of the nonlinear feedback on land decreases with an increase in atmospheric CO2 or warming under the high emission scenario. This study highlights the significance of land nonlinear climate‐carbon cycle feedback in increasing land carbon sink and slowing down future climate change. Quantifying the strength of these two feedbacks is one of the great challenges of climate change science today. Most previous studies examining these two feedbacks have ignored their nonlinear interaction, which may induce large uncertainty for future climate projections under high CO2 emission scenarios. To quantify this nonlinear feedback, we used simulations by nine Earth system models driven by a prescribed 1% per year increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration for 140 years. We find that the nonlinear feedback can provide a strong additional contribution (about 8% ± 12%) to the global land carbon increase for a quadrupled CO2 concentration scenario. Further analysis shows that the combined effects of rising CO2 fertilization and warming‐induced growing vegetation productivity over the Northern Hemisphere dominate the nonlinear feedback. This study based on Earth system models provides new insights into the interaction between climate and carbon cycle, and highlights the significant nonlinear effect in projecting future carbon mitigation. To control the atmospheric methane concentration for Paris Agreement and Global Methane Pledge, it is urgent to elucidate global methane budget, in the context of dangerous high growth rate of atmospheric methane concentration in the past three years (2020–2022). Interdisciplinary research can definitely help answer the open questions about methane budget, as some examples shown in this Special Issue on “Methane emissions, sinks, and mitigation”.

Summary: Climate change mitigation is a global challenge that, however, needs to be resolved by national-level authorities, resembling a “tragedy of the commons”. This paradox is reflected at the European scale, as climate commitments are made by the EU collectively, but implementation is the responsibility of individual Member States. Here, we investigate a suite of near-optimal effort-sharing scenarios where the European electricity sector is decarbonized between 55% and 75% relative to 1990, in line with 2030 ambitions. To this end, we use a brownfield electricity system optimization model in combination with the Modeling All Alternatives methodology. Results show that only very particular effort-sharing schemes are able to reach the theoretical minimum system cost. In most cases, an additional cost of at least 5% is incurred. Results reveal large inequalities in the efforts required to decarbonize national electricity sectors.

Above-ground biomass (AGB) is considered an essential climate variable that underpins our knowledge and information about the role of forests in mitigating climate change. The availability of satellite-based AGB and AGB change (ΔAGB) products has increased in recent years. Here we assessed the past decade net ΔAGB derived from four recent global multi-date AGB maps: ESA-CCI maps, WRI-Flux model, JPL time series, and SMOS-LVOD time series. Our assessments explore and use different reference data sources with biomass re-measurements within the past decade. The reference data comprise National Forest Inventory (NFI) plot data, local ΔAGB maps from airborne LiDAR, and selected Forest Resource Assessment country data from countries with well-developed monitoring capacities. Map to reference data comparisons were performed at levels ranging from 100 m to 25 km spatial scale. The comparisons revealed that LiDAR data compared most reasonably with the maps, while the comparisons using NFI only showed some agreements at aggregation levels

Summary: Solar photovoltaics (PVs) installation would increase 20-fold by 2050; however, considerable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are generated during the cradle-to-gate production, with spatiotemporal variances depending on the grid emission. Thus, a dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) model was developed to assess the accumulated PV panels with a heterogeneous carbon footprint if manufactured and installed in the United States. The state-level carbon footprint of solar electricity (CFEPV-avg) from 2022 to 2050 was estimated using several cradle-to-gate production scenarios to account for emissions stemming from electricity generated from solar PVs. The CFEPV-avg (min 0.032, max 0.051, weighted avg. 0.040 kg CO2-eq/kWh) in 2050 will be significantly lower than that of the comparison benchmark (min 0.047, max 0.068, weighted avg. 0.056 kg CO2-eq/kWh). The proposed dynamic LCA framework is promising for planning solar PV supply chains and, ultimately, the supply chain of an entire carbon-neutral energy system to maximize the environmental benefits.

Summary: Periphytic biofilms (PB) at the soil-water interface contributes 7–38% of the methane emission from rice paddies, yet the biogeographical mechanism underlying and affecting the process remain elusive. In this study, rice fields along an edapho-vclimatic gradient were sampled, and the environmental drivers affecting distribution of methanogenic and methanotrophic communities were evaluated. The methanogenic and methanotrophic communities at soil-water interface showed less complex inter/intra-generic interactions than those in soil, and their relative abundances were weakly driven by spatial distance, soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen and pH. The nutrient supply and buffering capacity of extracellular polymeric substance released by PB reduced their interaction and enhanced the resilience on edaphic environment changes. Climate affected soil metal content, extracellular polymeric substance content, and thus the methane-related communities, and caused geographical variation in the impacts of PB on methane emissions from rice paddies. This study facilitates our understanding of geographical differences in the contribution of PB to methane emission.

In order to realistically fulfil global and national climate protection targets, all potential measures have to be made use of to a maximum extent. Because it is readily available, biomass energy has been playing a key practical role for decades, supported by the traditional assumption of its carbon neutrality: under sustainable conditions, carbon dioxide emitted during combustion is held to be equal to its absorption during plant growth. In order to clarify conditions of carbon (C) neutrality, it is therefore necessary to model the annual natural C cycle on the entire planet and to include changes caused by a variety of growth strategies for biomass fuels. The "Combined Energy and Biosphere Model" CEBM calculates the cycle of plant growth, decay, biomass fuel production and its combustion on 2433 grid elements worldwide. CEBM results suggest that over many decades, the C pools of litter and especially soil organic carbon (i.e., humus layer) deplete considerably as a consequence of the interrupted natural carbon cycle. Overall, based on this finding, the earlier assumption of "carbon-neutral biomass fuels" is disapproved of in a long-term evaluation and—as a coarse rule of thumb—might be reduced to "half as carbon neutral as previously assumed" (when compared to a current fuel mix). On top of this principal effect, it is well known that life-cycle emissions, indirect or secondary emissions such as energy input related to production, transport and conversion into fuels will still add to this already principally highly incomplete carbon neutrality of biomass. The degree to which elevated CO2 concentrations (e[CO2]) increase the amount of carbon (C) assimilated by vegetation plays a key role in climate change. However, due to the short‐term nature of CO2 enrichment experiments and the lack of reconciliation between different ecological scales, the effect of e[CO2] on plant biomass stocks remains a major uncertainty in future climate projections. Here, we review the effect of e[CO2] on plant biomass across multiple levels of ecological organization, scaling from physiological responses to changes in population‐, community‐, ecosystem‐, and global‐scale dynamics. We find that evidence for a sustained biomass response to e[CO2] varies across ecological scales, leading to diverging conclusions about the responses of individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems. While the distinct focus of every scale reveals new mechanisms driving biomass accumulation under e[CO2], none of them provides a full picture of all relevant processes. For example, while physiological evidence suggests a possible long‐term basis for increased biomass accumulation under e[CO2] through sustained photosynthetic stimulation, population‐scale evidence indicates that a possible e[CO2]‐induced increase in mortality rates might potentially outweigh the effect of increases in plant growth rates on biomass levels. Evidence at the global scale may indicate that e[CO2] has contributed to increased biomass cover over recent decades, but due to the difficulty to disentangle the effect of e[CO2] from a variety of climatic and land‐use‐related drivers of plant biomass stocks, it remains unclear whether nutrient limitations or other ecological mechanisms operating at finer scales will dampen the e[CO2] effect over time. By exploring these discrepancies, we identify key research gaps in our understanding of the effect of e[CO2] on plant biomass and highlight the need to integrate knowledge across scales of ecological organization so that large‐scale modeling can represent the finer‐scale mechanisms needed to constrain our understanding of future terrestrial C storage. Rapid Arctic environmental change affects the entire Earth system as thawing permafrost ecosystems release greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Understanding how much permafrost carbon will be released, over what time frame, and what the relative emissions of carbon dioxide and methane will be is key for understanding the impact on global climate. In addition, the response of vegetation in a warming climate has the potential to offset at least some of the accelerating feedback to the climate from permafrost carbon. Temperature, organic carbon, and ground ice are key regulators for determining the impact of permafrost ecosystems on the global carbon cycle. Together, these encompass services of permafrost relevant to global society as well as to the people living in the region and help to determine the landscape-level response of this region to a changing climate. Subterranean ventilation is a non‐diffusive transport process that provokes the abrupt transfer of CO2‐rich air (previously stored) through water‐free soil pores and cracks from the vadose zone to the atmosphere, under high‐turbulence conditions. In dryland ecosystems, whose biological carbon exchanges are poorly characterized, it can strongly determine eddy‐covariance CO2 fluxes that are used to validate remote sensing products and constrain models of gross primary productivity. Although subterranean ventilation episodes (VE) may occur in arid and semi‐arid regions, which are unsung players in the global carbon cycle, little research has focused on the role of VE CO2 emissions in land–atmosphere CO2 exchange. This study shows clear empirical evidence of globally occurring VE. To identify VE, we used in situ quality‐controlled eddy‐covariance open data of carbon fluxes and ancillary variables from 145 sites in different open land covers (grassland, cropland, shrubland, savanna, and barren) across the globe. We selected the analyzed database from the FLUXNET2015, AmeriFlux, OzFlux, and AsiaFlux networks. To standardize the analysis, we designed an algorithm to detect CO2 emissions produced by VE at all sites considered in this study. Its main requirement is the presence of considerable and non‐spurious correlation between the friction velocity (i.e., turbulence) and CO2 emissions. Of the sites analyzed, 34% exhibited the occurrence of VE. This vented CO2 emerged mainly from arid ecosystems (84%) and sites with hot and dry periods. Despite some limitations in data availability, this research demonstrates that VE‐driven CO2 emissions occur globally. Future research should seek a better understanding of its drivers and the improvement of partitioning models, to reduce uncertainties in estimated biological CO2 exchanges and infer their contribution to the global net ecosystem carbon balance. Rising atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases are driving modern climate change and, therefore, are having substantial and sustained impacts on natural ecosystems and human populations. In a recent article in this journal, M. F. Hossain (2022. Water, Air, and Soil Pollution. 233:105) calculated how anthropogenic activity has perturbed the global carbon cycle, forecast future increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and discussed possible health consequences from rising CO2 levels. However, Hossain’s article gave an inaccurate representation of how human actions have altered the global carbon cycle. He substantially underestimated the magnitude of anthropogenic disturbances in terms of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion and land use change and also underestimated the role of land and ocean processes in removing some of the emitted CO2 from the atmosphere. At the same time, he overestimated the rate at which atmospheric CO2 levels are increasing, resulting in a highly improbable forecast for atmospheric CO2 concentrations later in this century. He also exaggerated the health impacts from exposure to those CO2 levels as being severe and deadly, when our current understanding suggests that the direct effects are uncertain but likely minor. Because each of the major components of Hossain (2022) contains substantial and fundamental flaws, I warn readers to be skeptical before incorporating its findings into their understanding of carbon cycling, climate change, and human health. Since the 1950s, observations of radiocarbon (14C) in tropospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) have been conducted in both hemispheres, documenting the so-called nuclear "bomb spike" and its transfer into the oceans and the terrestrial biosphere, the two compartments permanently exchanging carbon with the atmosphere. Results from the Heidelberg global network of Δ14C-CO2 observations are revisited here with respect to the insights and quantitative constraints they provided on these carbon exchange fluxes. The recent development of global and hemispheric trends of Δ14C-CO2 are further discussed in regard to their suitability to continue providing constraints for 14C-free fossil CO2 emission changes on the global and regional scale.
