An der Höheren Bundeslehr- und Forschungsanstalt für Gartenbau (HBLFA) Schönbrunn und Österreichische Bundesgärten in Wien wurde im Jahr 2003 ein Langzeitversuch mit der Dreilappigen Papau (Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal) eingerichtet. In diesem wird die Anpassungsfähigkeit an mitteleuropäische Umweltverhältnisse anhand von 13 Sorten überprüft. Ab dem achten Jahr haben die Pflanzen zuverlässig Früchte getragen, welche in unterschiedlichen Versuchsreihen sensorisch beurteilt wurden. In zehn Versuchsjahren konnten Gewichte und natürliche Reifezeitpunkte von 16.164 Einzelfrüchten dokumentiert werden. Die Daten zeigen wechselhafte Gesamterträge und Fruchtzahlen, aber auch Unterschiede in der Reifeverteilung, dem Saisonstart und der Saisonlänge über alle Sorten und Jahre. Vergleichbare Studien aus Italien, Ohio und Kentucky konnten ähnliche mittlere Fruchtgewichte, aber deutlich geringere Fruchtzahlen erzielen. Es gibt mehrere mögliche Einflussfaktoren. Neben Bestäubungsdefiziten und anderen Vorerntefaktoren wie dem Wetter kann die Bodentextur (Körnung) die Baumproduktivität der Papau erheblich beeinflussen. Zudem kann eine genetische Inkompatibilität zwischen der Sämlingsunterlage mit dem Edelreis zu Vitalitätseinbußen führen. Auch eine gezielte Sortenauswahl kann für gute Erträge hilfreich sein. Die wohlschmeckenden Sorten ‘Davis’, ‘Mango’, ‘NC-1’, ‘Overleese’ und ‘Prima 1216–60’ haben sich in diesem Versuchssetup als besonders großfruchtend erwiesen und zeigten hohe Fruchtzahlen und eine lange Reifeverteilung. In dieser Konstellation kann eine Saisonlänge von sechs bis acht Wochen erreicht werden, was für den Vertrieb frischer Früchte förderlich ist.
