Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and essential oils of conifers are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. This work aimed to analyze the VOCs of 30 conifer species representing the Pinaceae and Cupressaceae families. Samples were collected from arboreta in Hungary, and their chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography (SPME-GC/MS); then, chemometric analyses were performed using multivariate methods to identify characteristic VOCs of conifers. Here, we present results for monoterpene and sesquiterpene profiles of the examined conifer samples. The most abundant compounds detected were α-pinene, bornyl acetate, limonene, β-pinene, β-caryophyllene, β-myrcene, δ-3-carene, and β-phellandrene. The results showed that the following volatiles were characteristic of the conifer groups: sabinene (RRT=6.0) for the cupressoid group (which includes the Cupressaceae species), longifolene (RRT=15.0) and β-pinene (RRT=6.1) were characteristic of the pinoid group (including Picea, Pinus, and Pseudotsuga species), and camphene (RRT=5.5) and bornyl acetate (RRT=12.6) were characteristic of the abietoid group (including Abies, Cedrus, and Tsuga species). Our results on VOCs in the Pinaceae and Cupressaceae families contribute to the elucidation of biodiversity patterns of conifer species and, in addition, may support the industrial application of terpenes. Jacobaea is a small genus of plants belonging to Asteraceae family, formerly joint to Senecio genus, that includes more than 60 species and sub-species. Several taxa of this genus have been extensively studied both for their non-volatile and volatile metabolites. In the present study the chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) from aerial parts of Jacobaea delphiniifolia (Vahl) Pelser & Veldkamp, collected in Sicily, was analyzed by GC–MS. No one report has been previously published on the EO of this species. The result showed the presence of a large quantity of two metabolites, namely 1-undecene (63.57%) and thymol methyl ether (13.65%). In this work, more than 200-year-old historical remains of liquorice root powder and a current liquorice root as a reference material were analyzed by HPLC–MS/MS to confirm the botanical authenticity of the historical material by comparing the results obtained. Combining extraction with different solvents with HPLC–MS/MS successfully identified nine chemotaxonomic markers in the historical material, thus confirming its identity as liquorice. In the current reference material, 32 chemotaxonomic markers of liquorice were successfully identified. Therefore, several liquorice-specific compounds in the historical remains analyzed were shown to have degraded over time. In addition, possible fragmentation mechanisms for five liquorice-specific compounds that have not been previously published in the literature were proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global climate change has generated an increasing number of environmental problems, especially in Mediterranean coastal areas, such as the Po Delta (PD), where shellfish production has undergone an overall decline because of strong environmental changes. The present study is centred on assessing the fundamental ecological aspects in one of the most crucial European shellfish production lagoons, Sacca degli Scardovari (SC), addressing phytoplankton community parameters directly affecting shellfish production, namely, chemotaxonomic composition, size fractions, and total biomass, in relation to the physicochemical properties of the water column and mussel filtering activity. Our findings suggest that the phytoplankton community structure, its role within the lagoon food web and its production cycles depend on two distinct allogenic inputs, which shape the community differently and exert substantial control on shellfish production. At the same time, the suspended mussel biomass strongly controls the phytoplankton size composition, as their growth is largely supported by nanophytoplankton. As the Po River collects the drainage waters of the Italian side of the entire Alpine Arch, the phytoplankton dynamics reported here represent a useful baseline for further addressing issues of climatic changes affecting lagoon ecology. We believe that our study presents an innovative tool for the planning and management of interventions aimed at enhancing national mussel production without neglecting aspects of environmental protection or the integrity of the coastal system, with significant scientific implications. Essential oils (EOs) are complex and susceptible to environmental conditions, they have a wide range of biological activities and are often used to differentiate between similar species. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) coupled with chemometric analysis was applied to systematically analyse and evaluate EOs constituents and antioxidant activity of six Chinese Cupressaceae taxa (Platycladus orientalis Franco, P. orientalis Franco ‘Sieboldii’, P. orientalis Franco ‘Aurea’, Juniperus chinensis Roxb., J. chinensis Roxb. ‘Kaizuca’, and J. sabina L.) under identical conditions. The antioxidant activity of the EOs was evaluated using 2,2 -diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric reducing power (FRAP), and the total phenolic content (TPC) of the EOs was determined by Folin–Ciocalteau reagent. In total, seventy individual constituents were identified with the main components being α-pinene, sabinene, d-limonene, bornyl acetate, δ-3-carene and β-myrcene. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchal cluster analysis (HCA) successfully discriminated the six taxa into three chemotypes and the unique chemotype revealed that J. chinensis ‘Kaizuca’ may be a species rather than a cultivar of J. chinensis. The results of OPLS-DA analysis showed that the three compounds screened, namely, α-pinene, sabinene, and δ-3-carene, can completely distinguish Platycladus spp. from Juniperus spp. The DPPH assay results ranged from 576.14 (J. chinensis ‘Kaizuca’) to 1146.12 (J. sabina) μmol eq Trolox/mL EO, while the ABTS values ranged from 1579.62 (P. orientalis ‘Aurea’) to 5071.82 (J. sabina) μmol eq Trolox/mL. In the FRAP assay, the values ranged from 1086.50 (J. chinensis ‘Kaizuca’) to 1191.18 (J. sabina) μmol eq Trolox/ml and the TPC of the EOs studied ranged from 15.17 (J. chinensis ‘Kaizuca’) to 39.37 (J. sabina) mg GAE/mL EO. The results consistently showed that J. sabina possessed the strongest antioxidant activity and can be preferentially used as a rich source of potentially natural antioxidants. A Gram‐positive, aerobic, rod‐shaped mesophilic bacterium was isolated from birch wood, referred to as the AB strain. Allergological tests suggest that this strain may cause allergic alveolitis in sawmill workers. Employing a polyphasic taxonomic approach, the AB strain's 16S rRNA gene sequence showed high similarity to Microbacterium barkeri and M. oryzae, with 97.25% and 96.91%, respectively, a finding supported by rpoB and gyrB sequence analysis. Further genome sequence comparison with the closely related M. barkeri type strain indicated a digital DNA–DNA hybridization value of 25.5% and an average nucleotide identity of 82.52%. The AB strain's cell wall peptidoglycan contains ornithine, and its polar lipids comprise diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and unidentified glycolipids. Its major fatty acids include anteiso C15:0, anteiso C17:0, and iso C16:0, while MK‐10 is its predominant respiratory quinone. Comprehensive analysis through 16S rRNA, whole‐genome sequencing, phenotyping, chemotaxonomy, and MALDI‐TOF MS profiling indicates that the AB strain represents a new species within the Microbacterium genus. Common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most valuable cereal crops worldwide. This study examined leaf extracts of 30 accessions of T. aestivum and its subspecies using 48 h maceration with methanol by GC-MS and GCxGC-MS. The plants were grown from seeds of the wheat genetics collection of the Wheat Genetics Sector of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, SB RAS. The analysis revealed 263 components of epicuticular waxes, including linear and branched alkanes, aliphatic alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, β-diketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, mono- and diterpenes, phytosterols, and tocopherols. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis were used to identify and visualize the differences between the leaf extracts of different wheat cultivars. Three clusters were identified, with the leading components being (1) octacosan-1-ol, (2) esters of saturated and unsaturated alcohols, and (3) fatty acid alkylamides, which were found for the first time in plant extracts. The results highlight the importance of metabolic studies in understanding the adaptive mechanisms and increasing wheat resistance to stress factors. Taxonomy—the classification of species—is an important branch of biology that allows us to systematically understand and study biodiversity. Conventional taxonomy relies heavily on morphological and anatomical structures for classification, but recent discoveries of potentially cryptic species and morphological plasticity in many species underscore the importance of having an alternative or complementary method for species classification. In this paper, we discuss the emerging method of classification using biochemical signals, i.e., chemotaxonomy. We also present a case study on the feasibility of biomarker-based chemotaxonomy on the marine red alga Laurencia snackeyi using halogenated snyderane-type sesquiterpenes, which were proposed in earlier studies.

Ulmus davidiana has been used as food or medicine in oriental due to its safety, including its roots, bark, and fruits. The roots and bark of Ulmus were used as a diuretic and for treatment due to their anti-cancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. Ulmus species are known to contain flavan-3-ols as their main component. In previous research the presence of (+)-catechin 5-O-β-D-apiofuranoside was isolated from the roots of Ulmus davidiana, and (+)-catechin 7-O-β-D-xylopyranoside was confirmed in the bark Ulmus Americana, and the presence of catechin 7-O-β-D apiofuranoside in the stems and bark of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica. The catechin-glycosides of flavan-3-ols have various effects, including antiulcer properties, and have also been used as analgesics. Additionally, chemotaxonomy studies of the Ulmus species have been reported. However, the chemotaxonomy of Ulmus species native to Asia has not been reported. In this study, we report the screening of catechin 7-O-beta-D apiofuranoside from various Ulmus species native to Asia. We confirmed the presence of catechin 7-O-β-D-apiofuranoside in a total of 22 Ulmus samples, including 18 Ulmus species native to China, and 1 sample each from Mongolian, Nicaragua, Vietnam, and Korea through HPLC and LC-MS/MS analysis. We also confirmed the content of the indicator materials. Therefore, the potential of using native Ulmus species from Korea as a natural material has been confirmed.

A phytochemical investigation of three species of Malaysian Dipterocarpus contributed to the isolation of 22 compounds which consist of 15 oligostilbenoids, 2 terpenes, 2 coumarins, and 3 flavonoids. The isolation of flavonoids in the Dipterocarpaceae family is very limited. Moreover, 4-methoxepigallocatechin-3-O-O-(3-methyl) gallate (20) was isolated for the first time in the plant. The occurrence of 4-O-methylgallocatechin (18) and its stereoisomer; 4-O’-methylepigallocatechin (19) was first reported in the Dipterocarpaceae family. This study also reported the existence of several types of oligostilbenoids such as davidiol A (8), stenophyllol B (9), isohopeaphenol (11), resveratrol (1), and ampelopsin E (10) which are the first occurrence in Dipterocarpus genus and suggested a significant chemotaxonomic relationship between Dipterocarpus, more closely to Vatica which is classified under Dipterocarpeae tribe.

This study deals with the elucidation of the life cycle of an inoperculate discomycete that was eventually collected from conifer wood in South Germany and has become famous for the extraordinary diversity of its secondary metabolites when it was studied extensively during the 1990s. It had then been identified as Lachnum papyraceum (Lachnaceae, Helotiales) based on morphological traits, and extracts from its mycelial cultures were found to possess extraordinary nematicidal and antibiotic activities. Over 60 different secondary metabolites were finally identified from this fungus after extensive variation of culture media and scale-up of production up to 100-L scale. Among the main active principles were mycorrhizin A and chloromycorrhizin A, which had first been reported in 1977 from an unnamed "mycorrhizal" fungus of the hemiparasitic plant, Monotropa hypopitys (pinesap), that was isolated in Sweden. We noted that both the Lachnum strain and the original mycorrhizin producer were still available in the public domain and decided to study them for comparison using a multilocus phylogeny and also generated secondary metabolite profiles of both strains using analytical high performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array and mass spectrometric detection (HPLC–DAD/MS). Surprisingly, the sequence data as well as the secondary metabolite profiles of both strains were highly similar, and it was also confirmed by phylogenetic methods that the strains are indeed nested within the genus Lachnum by comparison of their ITS, LSU, and RPB2 sequences. The specimen called L. papyraceum in the old publications was tentatively re-identified by Hans-Otto Baral as L. cf. subvirgineum, but substantial further work on the taxonomy of the genus remains to be done, anyway. We conclude that some Lachnum species have a highly complex but all the more interesting life cycle, and the mycorrhizal symbiont partner may invade the host plant, where it may persist as an endophyte and finally turn saprotrophic on the wood of the senescent pine tree. The taxonomy of these fungi should also be further resolved in the future, using a polythetic concept that includes chemotaxonomic data and a multi-locus genealogy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: Dinoflagellates have a rich history of characterization of their membrane‐reinforcing sterols because of a structural diversity and chemotaxonomic utility uncommon to other classes of algae. The Kareniaceae are no exception in that they produce sterols, often containing a Δ8(14) nuclear unsaturation, which are rare in most other dinoflagellate groups. A continuing goal of our laboratory is to examine the sterols of previously uncharacterized dinoflagellates to assess their sterol‐based chemotaxonomy compared to other members of the Dinophyceae. Asterodinium gracile, a member of the Kareniaceae, has not been commercially available for study until recently. To this end, our objective was to characterize the sterols of A. gracile to determine whether they match the 4α‐methyl‐substituted, Δ8(14)‐nuclear‐unsaturated sterols, such as (24R)‐4α‐methyl‐5α‐ergosta‐8(14),22‐dien‐3β‐ol (gymnodinosterol; C29:2) and 27‐nor‐(24R)‐4α‐methyl‐5α‐ergosta‐8(14),22‐dien‐3β‐ol (brevesterol; C28:2), of most species within the canonical genera Karenia, Karlodinium and Takayama, or instead the 4‐desmethyl sterols, such as 27‐nor‐(24R)‐23‐methyl‐ergosta‐8(14),22‐dien‐3β‐ol (C28:2), of its chemotaxonomically atypical, yet closest phylogenetic relative, Karenia papilionacea. We have observed A. gracile to produce two 4α‐methyl‐substituted sterols with the suggested structures of 4α‐methyl‐5α‐ergosta‐8(14)‐en‐3β‐ol (C29:1) and 4α‐methyl‐5α‐ergosta‐8(14),24(28)‐dien‐3β‐ol (amphisterol, C29:2), as major sterols amongst five other minor sterols, which included the common dinoflagellate sterol cholest‐5‐en‐3β‐ol (cholesterol, C27:1), but did not include gymnodinosterol or brevesterol (as in most canonical Kareniaceae) or 27‐nor‐(24R)‐23‐methyl‐ergosta‐8(14),22‐dien‐3β‐ol (as found in K. papilionacea). Detection of amphisterol and 4α‐methyl‐5α‐ergosta‐8(14)‐en‐3β‐ol is notable because they are sterols associated with some species of Amphidinium, such as Amphidinium carterae, and, to our knowledge, have not been observed in a member of the Kareniaceae before. Discovery of these major sterols in A. gracile expands our knowledge of the range of sterols produced by the Kareniaceae and indicates a shared chemotaxonomy with some species of Amphidinium. Phytochemical study of green propolis alcohol extract of Brazilian Caatinga Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir resulted in the separation of six flavonoids, including quercetin 3‐methyl ether (1) and 3,3′‐O‐dimethylquercetin (2), and four flavanones eriodictyol 5‐O‐methyl ether (3), 5,4′‐dihydroxy‐6,7‐dimethoxyflavanone (4), licoflavanone (5), and macarangaflavanone B (6). All these metabolites were first isolated from green propolis and the genus Mimosa. Metabolites 3–4 also established chemotaxonomic significance since they had never been observed in the bean family Fabaceae. Flavones 1–2 showed strong antioxidative activity against DPPH (1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picryl hydrazyl) radicals with IC50 values of 12.40 and 16.23 μg/mL, respectively. All six isolates showed anti‐inflammatory effects against NO (nitric oxide) production in LPS (lipopolysaccharide)‐stimulated Raw 264.7 cells, in which the activity of flavone 1 was better than the standard dexamethasone (IC50 13.35 μg/mL). Flavonoids 1–3 also strongly controlled the growth of the Gram‐positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6051, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 with MIC values of 32–64 μg/mL. Six isolated flavonoids exhibited strong or moderate mosquito larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus fourth instar larvae with the 24 h LC50 values of 29.62–55.89 μg/mL. Two Hyptis plants endemic to Taiwan, H. rhomboides and H. suaveolens, contained xanthine oxidase inhibitors. To chemically investigate more herbs of the same genus, this study aimed to explore bioactive constituents from Hyptis spicigera leaf and the aerial part of H. brevipes, which would also enrich the chemotaxonomic basis for the Hyptis plants. The EtOH extract of the plant materials was fractionated by liquid‐liquid partitioning, followed by separation over various chromatography. High‐performance liquid chromatography‐solid phase extraction‐nuclear magnetic resonance hyphenation, a sustainable and environmentally friendly instrument, was applied to accelerate the chemical investigation of each subfraction. Eighteen isolates from Hyptis spicigera leaf and 14 compounds from H. brevipes aerial part were characterized. Of these, 12 compounds are rosmarinic acid derivatives, of which 9′‐O‐methyl melitrate A (10) and sagecoumarin methyl ester (22) are tentatively identified as new compounds. In total, 25 compounds were separated and characterized from Hyptis spicigera leaf and H. brevipes aerial part. Of these, seven of them (2–4, 11, 12, 18, 20) are in common between these two species, and 17 isolates (2–4, 8‐14, 22, 23, and 26‐30) are phenylpropanoids which are commonly distributed in the Labiatae family. For the purposes of chemotaxonomic distinction of four pine species Pinus nigra, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus rigida and Pinus sylvestris growing in the suburban landscape of the central part of the Czech Republic, resin extracts from tree trunks, needles and female cones were analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Monoterpenes were shown to be the main terpene fraction of the resins of all studied pine species. On average, they made up 80% of the total terpene content. A characteristic monoterpene for distinguishing pine species was β-pinene, with high levels in P. ponderosa, moderate levels in P. rigida and low levels in P. sylvestris and P. nigra. P. sylvestris contained only trace amount of Δ-3-carene (0.6%) in resins from needles and thus belongs to the α-pinene chemotypic variation. Slight seasonal variability in terpene production was found for resins from needles of P. nigra and P. sylvestris. When comparing European populations according to the monoterpene composition of resins from needles, it can be stated that the α-pinene content increased in the order P. ponderosa < P. rigida < P. nigra < P. sylvestris while the β-pinene content changed in the opposite direction. The genus Phagnalon Cass., included in the Asteraceae family, has a wide distribution, expanding from Macaronesia in the West to the Himalayas in the East, from South France and Nord Italy to Ethiopia and Arabian Peninsula. Various species of Phagnalon have been used in the popular medicine of several countries as medicinal herbs and food. The extracts and the secondary metabolites, have a varied application spectrum at several biological levels, with antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antitumor, etc. properties having been reported. The essential oils of four taxa, Phagnalon rupestre, Phagnalon saxatile var. viride, and Phagnalon rupestre subsp. illyricum var. metlesicsii collected in Sicily (Italy), never previously investigated, and of Phagnalon graecum collected in Greece, were analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). All the oils were very rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons, with β-pinene as main constituent. Chemotaxonomic considerations with respect to all the other oils of Phagnalon taxa were carried out. The results showed that the following volatiles were characteristic of the conifer groups: sabinene (RRT=6.0) for the cupressoid group (which includes the Cupressaceae species), longifolene (RRT=15.0) and β-pinene (RRT=6.1) were characteristic of the pinoid group (including Picea, Pinus, and Pseudotsuga species), and camphene (RRT=5.5) and bornyl acetate (RRT=12.6) were characteristic of the abietoid group (including Abies, Cedrus, and Tsuga species). Our results on VOCs in the Pinaceae and Cupressaceae families contribute to the elucidation of biodiversity patterns of conifer species and, in addition, may support the industrial application of terpenes.

The genus Polygala (Polygalaceae), comprising about 670 species worldwide, has more than 40 species in China. The roots of Polygala tenuifolia Willd., Polygala sibirica L., and Polygala japonica Houtt. are recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopeia. Other closely related plants of the Polygala genus are also widely used in the folk medicine of southern China, such as Polygala fallax Hemsl., Polygala arvensis Willd., and Polygala glomerata Lour. To systematically compare the chemical compositional and elucidate characteristic compounds among the Polygala genus, six Polygala species, namely P. tenuifolia, P. sibirica, P. japonica, P. fallax, P. arvensis and P. glomerata, underwent comprehensive phytochemical studies using the ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass Spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS) technique, resulting in the identification of 154 compounds, consisting of 62 oligosaccharide esters (40.26 %), 58 saponins (37.66 %), 29 xanthones (18.83 %), and 5 other chemicals (3.25 %). Based on the Masslynx computational tool, a comprehensive comparative phytochemical profiling was achieved and revealed differences in composition among the six Polygala species. P. sibirica exhibited higher levels of specific compounds and was more closely related to P. tenuifolia. Meanwhile, P. japonica showed greater similarity to P. fallax, P. arvensis, and P. glomerata. Oligosaccharide esters and triterpene saponins were more abundant in P. sibirica and P. tenuifolia than in other species. Furthermore, the antioxidant activities (1,1-diphenyl-2-acrylohydrazide [DPPH], 2,2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt [ABTS], copper ion reducing antioxidant capacity [CUPRAC], and ferric ion-reducing antioxidant power [FRAP]) of the six species were evaluated. Among them, P. tenuifolia demonstrated superior antioxidant potential, with a lower half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value for scavenging DPPH radicals and excellence in CUPRAC (119.85 ± 16.28 μM/0.01 g) compared to other plants. P. japonica showed higher ABTS (98.94 ± 0.03 μM/0.01 g) and FRAP (42.58 ± 0.08 μM/0.01 g). Total flavonoids showed remarkable antioxidant capabilities among the six medicinal plants. Total saponins and phenolics also contributed to the antioxidant potential of these plants. The systematic data and results obtained may provide methodological support for further evaluating the potential use of folk Polygala plants as new effective materials in various commercial sectors, including food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

High mountain lakes are increasingly recognized as sentinel ecosystems of global change. Monitoring phytoplankton changes or reconstructing their composition from sedimentary records can help identify systemic changes in these lakes and their catchments.This study aimed to evaluate the distribution of the major phytoplankton groups in high mountain lakes across environmental gradients and identify tipping points in relative dominance. The phytoplankton groups were estimated using pigment‐based chemotaxonomy in 79 lakes in the Pyrenees selected to cover the bedrock and elevation gradients. Fifty‐four environment variables were considered, including in‐lake and catchment descriptors.Redundancy analyses showed that in‐lake descriptors override the explicative capacity of landscape variables. Generalized additive models and multivariate regression trees showed that water hardness, trophic state and food‐web descriptors were, in this order, the most influential factors determining phytoplankton group dominance. Calcium concentration of about 200 μeq L−1 defined the threshold between soft waters—with chrysophytes and chlorophytes showing a higher affinity for them—and harder waters that favour diatoms and cyanobacteria. Across the trophic gradient, there was a threshold at ~5 μg L−1 of total phosphorus (TP), chrysophytes being dominant below that TP value and cryptophytes above. The dominance of chlorophytes and cryptophytes increased with the density of macrozooplankton. Chrysophytes were significantly lower and diatoms higher in lakes with fish.Synthesis. The relative abundance of phytoplankton groups in temperate high mountain lakes responds in a nonlinear way to the hardness of the water in the range 20–1195 Ca2+ μeq L−1 and the trophic state in the range 0.94–19 TP μg L −1. The thresholds across water hardness and trophic state gradients coincide with studies based on other organisms, pointing to a robust typology for mountain lakes that should be considered when selecting global change sentinel lakes and anticipating abrupt transitions across these thresholds. Essential oil (EO) of Salvia spp. has been widely used for culinary purposes and in perfumery and cosmetics, as well as having beneficial effects on human health. The present study aimed to investigate the quantitative and qualitative variations in EOs in wild-growing and cultivated pairs of samples from members in four Salvia sections or three clades, namely S. argentea L. (Sect. Aethiopis; Clade I-C), S. ringens Sm. (Sect. Eusphace; Clade I-D), S. verticillata L. (Sect. Hemisphace; Clade I-B), S. amplexicaulis Lam., and S. pratensis L. (Sect. Plethiosphace; Clade I-C). Furthermore, the natural variability in EO composition due to different genotypes adapted in different geographical and environmental conditions was examined by employing members of three Salvia sections or two phylogenetic clades, namely S. sclarea L. (six samples; Sect. Aethiopis or Clade I-C), S. ringens (three samples; Sect. Eusphace or Clade I-D), and S. amplexicaulis (five samples; Sect. Plethiosphace or Clade I-C). We also investigated the EO composition of four wild-growing species of two Salvia sections, i.e., S. aethiopis L., S. candidissima Vahl, and S. teddii of Sect. Aethiopis, as well as the cultivated material of S. virgata Jacq. (Sect. Plethiosphace), all belonging to Clade I-C. The EO composition of the Greek endemic S. teddii is presented herein only for the first time. Taken together, the findings of previous studies are summarized and critically discussed with the obtained results. Chemometric analysis (PCA, HCA, and clustered heat map) was used to identify the sample relationships based on their chemical classes, resulting in the classification of two distinct groups. Sensitizers are used to prepare photosensitive materials for ink-printing and thermal-recording media. Typical sensitizers contain an aromatic ring and exhibit aryl hydrocarbon receptor-mediated activity. They can accumulate in aquatic biota, leading to the disruption of ecosystems. Effluent from paper recycling plants has been identified as a source of contamination, and the presence of sensitizers in toilet paper may represent a new source of contamination in aquatic environments. To examine possible sources of contamination by sensitizers, this study investigated the levels of sensitizers in recycled toilet paper. We also studied the prevalence of sensitizers in rivers receiving effluents from sewage treatment plants in Japan, from 2020 to 2022. We detected eight sensitizers and related compounds in both toilet paper and river water samples; their total concentrations ranged from 0.78 to 34 µg/g (mean: 12 µg/g) in toilet paper and 58–1167 µg/L (median: 77 µg/L) in water. In the water samples, sensitizers were partitioned between liquid and suspended solid phases, and in suspended solids, sensitizers accounted for an average of 42% of the total. Correlation analysis showed a high correlation between sensitizer composition in the water from a river receiving sewage treatment plant effluents and toilet paper. Since these compounds were also detected in the river water analyzed in this study, toilet paper should be considered a novel source of sensitizers contamination in sewage treatment systems. The simplest ligand that can be present in energetic complex compounds is ammonia. It has a lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom that can form a coordinate bond with the metal cation. An example of such a compound is tetraamminecopper(II) nitrate (TACN). TACN is considered in the literature as an energy material with potential use in ammunition and civil applications. In the work, the physicochemical properties and detonation performance of TACN were investigated. The compound was identified using differential thermal analysis coupled with thermogravimetry (DTA/TG) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The sensitivity of TACN to mechanical stimuli (friction and impact) was determined. The thermal stability was tested. The critical diameter of the charge with bulk density and the ability to detonation for charges of different densities initiated by an electric detonator were determined. The velocity of detonation was also measured for various diameters and densities of charges and the method of their initiation. The cylinder expansion tests were performed for TACN charges of various densities, and the acceleration ability, detonation pressure and energy as well as the equation of state of detonation products were determined. The Western Antarctic Peninsula supports a diverse assemblage of > 100 described macroalgal species that contribute to the base of coastal food webs, but their contribution to local nearshore food webs is still uncertain across larger spatial scales. The analysis of biomarkers, specifically fatty acids and stable isotopes, offers a tool to clarify the trophic role of Antarctic macroalgae. The aim of this study was to describe the fatty acid profiles and stable isotope values of 31 algal species from three divisions (Chlorophyta—1, Ochrophyta—8, Rhodophyta—22) collected at the same sites for both biomarkers. Of these, 13 species had no previously published fatty acid profiles. Most species were rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), suggesting they are highly nutritious and could be a resource of essential fatty acids for consumers. This was specifically noticeable in the overall low PUFA ratio (∑ω6/∑ω3 ratio), with low ratios being an indicator of high nutritional quality for consumers. Fatty acid profiles of macroalgae grouped strongly by phylogeny (at the levels of division, order, and family), while stable isotope groupings were more driven by the physiological properties of the species. Specifically, some closely related red algal species exhibited very different stable isotope values based on their carbon concentrating mechanisms, with highly 13C-depleted values in several Rhodophyta species. The fact that the two biomarker approaches created different groupings of Antarctic macroalgae collected at the same locations emphasizes that their combined application can be a powerful tool in Antarctic coastal food web studies. A phytochemical investigation of Bidens procera L.C.Xu ex X.W.Zheng afforded two novel polyacetylenes, tridecane-2E-monoene-4,6,8-triyntylen-1,13-diol-12-O-β-glucoside (1) and tetradecane-2E,8E-diene-4,6-diyne-1,14-diol-13-O-β-glucoside (2), together with ten known compounds (3 − 12). Their chemical structures were elucidated by NMR and MS spectrums as well as the comparison of the published data. Furthermore, the chemotaxonomy of the yielded compounds was also discussed. Achieving untargeted chemical identification, isomeric differentiation, and quantification is critical to most scientific and technological problems but remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate an integrated SERS-based chemical taxonomy machine learning framework for untargeted structural elucidation of 11 epimeric cerebrosides, attaining >90% accuracy and robust single epimer and multiplex quantification with <10% errors. First, we utilize 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid to selectively capture the epimers at molecular sites of isomerism to form epimer-specific SERS fingerprints. Corroborating with in-silico experiments, we establish five spectral features, each corresponding to a structural characteristic: (1) presence/absence of epimers, (2) monosaccharide/cerebroside, (3) saturated/unsaturated cerebroside, (4) glucosyl/galactosyl, and (5) GlcCer or GalCer's carbon chain lengths. Leveraging these insights, we create a fully generalizable framework to identify and quantify cerebrosides at concentrations between 10−4 to 10−10 M and achieve multiplex quantification of binary mixtures containing biomarkers GlcCer24:1, and GalCer24:1 using their untrained spectra in the models. SERS-based chemical taxonomy is attractive for practical SERS applications where the identity and concentration of analytes are unknown. Analysis of purple dyestuff from a tin labeled "1 oz. Cudbear, No. 1 N. F. Powdered", marketed by the American business S. B. Penick & Company, "Manufacturers of fine drugs and chemicals", confirmed that the material was indeed a lichen dyestuff. It contains the same major orcein components identified in several other lichen dyes and dyed samples dating from the mid-19th century to today. These dyestuffs were analyzed using several analytical techniques. Fluorescence and fiber optic reflectance spectroscopic data for all the samples were similar. High performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection coupled to mass spectrometry confirmed that this commercial American cudbear was very similar to the samples from the United Kingdom but rather different from the archil-dyed reference yarns from Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, the eclectic artist Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo patented two innovative methods for polychrome printing on fabrics and textiles, giving life to Fortuny fabric production in Venice. The first patent was related to colour application, while the second to a special machine that allows continuous printing using cylindrical rollers. Despite the descriptions, the methodology and materials used remain a secret. In collaboration with the Fortuny Museum in Venice, this research aimed at studying and identifying the different steps of Fortuny printing methodologies. Printing matrices, fabrics and raw materials found in the artist's studio were analysed in a multi-analytical campaign through digital microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), μ-Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Three main pigments were identified in paper samples: ivory black, a copper-based pigment, and a carbon black pigment with ultramarine for blues. The pigments were bound with linseed oil and colophony in varying proportions. Polychrome silk fabrics were dyed with a base colour, and then the coloured patterns were superimposed by continuous printing. Prussian blue was identified as one of the textile inks. • Drug resistant mastitis-causing pathogens form protective biofilms. • Of 29 bacterial isolates tested, 93 % had biofilm forming ability. • Searsia lancea extracts prevented biofilm formation and disrupted preformed biofilm. • S. lancea ethanol extract had quorum quenching ability with MQSIC 50 < 0.08 mg/mL. Bovine mastitis is a critical pathology in global dairy herds, causing economic losses due to decreased production and increased culling. The continuous use of conventional antibiotics has led to antimicrobial resistance and treatment failures. The ability of mastitis bacteria to form biofilms is associated with resistance, while quorum sensing plays a vital role in biofilm formation. This complex interplay between quorum sensing (QS) and biofilm formation challenges mastitis management, necessitating the development of alternative therapeutics to combat this microbial threat effectively. This study aimed to investigate the biofilm forming ability (BFA) of 29 bacterial strains isolated from milk from cattle diagnosed with clinical cases of mastitis in Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI) and Tryptic Soy broth (TSB). Of these strains, 93.10 % (27) and 68.97 % (20) demonstrated BFA in TSB and BHI, respectively. Compared to BHI, TSB appeared to enhance BFA of the bacteria except for Streptococcus (Str.) uberis strains. Four selected South African plants with known antibacterial activities were tested for their antibiofilm and antiquorum sensing activities against the biofilm-forming mastitis isolates. Searsia lancea demonstrated antibiofilm forming activity against all organisms tested. All the plants demonstrated good biofilm disruption ability (BDA) against 24 h preformed biofilms of the isolates except for Erythrina caffra , while S. lancea displayed good BDA against all the 48 hour preformed biofilms of the bacteria. Generally, the plants' antibiofilm activities appeared to improve as the biofilm matured, with few exceptions. The ethanol extracts of S. lancea demonstrated MQSIC activity at 2.50 mg/mL, and the lowest MQSIC 50 value (< 0.08 mg/mL), demonstrating its quorum quenching ability. The ability of these plants, especially S. lancea , to inhibit QS and biofilms at various developmental stages may play a pivotal role in managing mastitis infections and curbing the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Nonetheless, further research is needed to elucidate the precise mechanisms underlying the inhibition of quorum signaling and biofilms, and to identify the specific compounds responsible for the observed activities. It is desirable to obtain high levels of viable Lacticaseibacillus paracasei , a widely used food probiotic whose antibacterial activity and potential application in milk remain largely uninvestigated. Here, we isolated and purified the L. paracasei strain XLK 401 from food-grade blueberry ferments and found that it exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative foodborne pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus , Salmonella paratyphi B, Escherichia coli O157, and Shigella flexneri. Then, we applied alternating tangential flow (ATF) technology to produce viable L. paracasei XLK 401 cells and its cell-free supernatant (CFS). Compared with the conventional fed-batch method, 22 h of ATF-based processing markedly increased the number of viable cells of L. paracasei XLK 401 to 12.14 ± 0.13 log cfu/mL. Additionally, the CFS exhibited good thermal stability and pH tolerance, inhibiting biofilm formation in the abovementioned foodborne pathogens. According to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, organic acids were the main antibacterial components of XLK 401 CFS, accounting for its inhibition activity. Moreover, the CFS of L. paracasei XLK 401 effectively inhibited the growth of multidrug-resistant gram-positive Staph. aureus and gram-negative E. coli O157 pathogens in milk, and caused a reduction in the pathogenic cell counts by 6 to 7 log cfu/mL compared with untreated control, thus considerably maintaining the safety of milk samples. For the first time to our knowledge, ATF-based technology was employed to obtain viable L. paracasei on a large scale, and its CFS could serve as a broad-spectrum biopreservative for potential application against foodborne pathogens in milk products. • An analytical protocol was developed to study water extracts from aged lacquer. • 12 New compounds were identified as aging products of lacquer. • During aging, pH, conductivity, and peak areas and indices of components changed. • Iron treatment caused the most changes in water extract while drying oil the least. Lacquered artifacts are among the most exquisite objects in museum collections. However, during aging, a considerable quantity of water-soluble products are formed on the lacquered surfaces, posing significant conservation and preservation challenges. This paper presents in-depth research on the composition of these water-soluble products by the investigation into water extracts from Asian lacquer coatings during artificial aging. Lacquer coatings of 15 specially designed formulations involving different lacquer tree saps (urushi, laccol, and thitsi), drying oils, tree resins and pigments were produced and artificially aged. A set of analytical methods was developed including pH and conductivity measurements, and peak area and index analyses based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Results show that artificial light aging cause the formation of a complex array of hydroxyl carboxyl benzenes (Webboxy products), while simultaneously decreasing the amounts of saturated straight-chain dicarboxylic fatty acids and glycerol. Distinct changes in the average number of hydroxyls and carboxyls bonded to the benzene rings or average chain length of the dicarboxylic fatty acids have also been observed with light aging. The additive that impeded light degradation and formation of water-soluble products the most is drying oil, and the additives that accelerated composition changes of water-soluble products was iron (treatment). Additionally, 12 new compounds have been identified as aging products of lacquer, such as tetramethyl dimethoxybenzene tetracarboxylate and benzene hexacarboxylic acid hexamethyl ester. The understanding of pH and conductivity readings of water extracts from aged lacquer is significantly improved. • Natural and synthetic dyes in Central Asian ikats were identified by HPLC-DAD-MS/MS. • Cotton weft threads were often dyed with red synthetic dyes. • Yellow from larkspur kept being used well after synthetic dyes were available. • A local species of scale insect (cochineal) might have been used to obtain red. • The introduction of synthetic dyes in ikat dyeing was a gradual and experimental process. Central Asian ikat textiles are characterised by their bold and large abstract patterns, made up of vibrant colours with a characteristic "blurred edge" effect, which makes them some of the most recognisable fabrics worldwide. Eleven ikats from the collection of the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC, USA) and six ikats from the collection of the British Museum (London, UK) were investigated by high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detector and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-HRMS/MS) to identify the dyes and expand on recent research focused on the integration of synthetic dyes in ikat dyeing during the second half of the 19th century. The results confirmed that the palette of natural dyes includes cochineal (probably mostly from a local species native to central Asia) for red, larkspur (Delphinium semibarbatum) for yellow, and indigo for blue as the main dye sources. In some of the textiles, madder (Rubia tinctorum) for red and pagoda tree (Sophora japonica) for yellow were also detected as minor components mixed with cochineal and larkspur, respectively. Synthetic dyes, such as scarlet reds (C.I. 16150 and 16155), rose bengale (C.I. 45435), eosin (C.I. 45380), erythrosine (C.I. 45430), fuchsin (C.I. 42510/42520), methyl violet (C.I. 42535/42555), malachite green (C.I. 42000) and brilliant green (C.I. 42040) were detected in eight textiles. In three textiles, natural dyes were identified in the ikat-dyed silk warp threads and synthetic dyes in the red cotton weft threads, highlighting interesting mixtures of materials and textile-making practices. Natural yellow dyes were used in all textiles, even those for which all the other colours are synthetic. In this study, phenolic acid compositions in fourteen taxa of Boraginaceae were analyzed by HPLC-UV to obtain informative chromatographic data. In general, 9 phenolic acid compounds were identified in different studied taxa. m-coumaric acid (1.80-1962.09 mg/kg), salicylic acid (13.22-867.35 mg/kg), ferulic acid (0.00-661.69 mg/kg), and pcoumaric acid (12.10-392.48 mg/kg) were characterized as the main compounds of the studied taxa. The results indicated that m-coumaric acid was the main phenolic acid in Heterocaryum rigidium, Myosotis sylvatica, and Solenanthus stamineus. Furthermore, salicylic acid was the main phenolic acids of Myosotis sylvatica and Nonnea caspica. Also, the highest amounts of ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid were detected in Myosotis sylvatica and Heliotropium europaeum, respectively. The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of these compounds was used for the characterization of the taxa and for revealing their phytochemical similarity and differentiation. Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that the studied taxa were classified into two main clusters (I and II) based on main phenolic acid compounds. Cluster I included Heterocaryum rigidum, Solenanthu stamineus, and Lappula microcarpaa, and the rest studied taxa grouped in cluster II. The development of freestanding and binder‐free electrode is an effective approach to perform the inherent capacity of active materials and promote the mechanism study by minimizing the interference from additives. Herein, we construct a freestanding cathode composed of MoS3/PPy nanowires (NWs) deposited on porous nickel foam (NF) (MoS3/PPy/NF) through electrochemical methods, which can work efficiently as sulfur‐equivalent cathode material for Li‐S batteries. The structural stability of the MoS3/PPy/NF cathode is greatly enhanced due to its significant tolerance to the volume expansion of MoS3 during the lithiation process, which we ascribe to the flexible 3D framework of PPy NWs, leading to superior cycling performance compared to the bulk‐MoS3/NF reference. Eliminating the interference of binder and carbon additives, the evolution of the chemical and electronic structure of Mo and S species during the discharge/charge was studied by X‐ray absorption near‐edge spectroscopy (XANES). The formation of lithium polysulfides was excluded as the driving cathode reaction mechanism, suggesting the great potential of MoS3 as a promising sulfur‐equivalent cathode material to evade the shuttle effect for Li‐S batteries. The present study successfully demonstrates the importance of structural design of freestanding electrode enhancing the cycling performances and revealing the corresponding mechanisms. Simple Summary: Recent research and chemical screening work has identified the distribution of two major naphthoquinone regioisomers across a representative selection (including all genera, all sections in the large genus Drosera, and 190 of ca. 260 species recognized to date) in the diverse carnivorous plant family Droseraceae (sundews, Venus's flytrap and waterwheel plant). A consistent and reliably reproducible foundation and framework for the systematic classification and phylogenetic evaluation of mutual relationships is thus provided. This review gives an updated overview of the naphthoquinone data relevant to the chemotaxonomy of the group under investigation. The essential conclusions from these data are summarized and directions are proposed for future research. Chemotaxonomy is the link between the state of the art in analytical chemistry and the systematic classification and phylogenetic analysis of biota. Although the characteristic secondary metabolites from diverse biotic sources have been used in pharmacology and biological systematics since the dawn of mankind, only comparatively recently established reproducible methods have allowed the precise identification and distinction of structurally similar compounds. Reliable, rapid screening methods like TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) can be used to investigate sufficiently large numbers of samples for chemotaxonomic purposes. Using distribution patterns of mutually exclusive naphthoquinones, it is demonstrated in this review how a simple set of chemical data from a representative sample of closely related species in the sundew family (Droseraceae, Nepenthales) provides taxonomically and phylogenetically informative signal within the investigated group and beyond. Two types of cell wall glycopolymers of different structure were found in the type strains of two species of phytopathogenic bacteria, Clavibacter insidiosus VKM Ac-1402T and Clavibacter nebraskensis VKM Ac-1404T (family Microbacteriaceae, class Actinomycetes). The first type was represented by new, previously undescribed (1→6)-linked β-D-galactofuranans, which in the studied strains differed in the structure of side oligosaccharide chains (the structures are given in the text). The structure of the second glycopolymer, a pyruvate-containing galactomannan, was identical in both strains. The results obtained in this work, together with those published previously, indicate that the presence of the pyruvate-containing galactomannan and galactofuranans (with an identical core structure and different side oligosaccharide substituents) can be considered as a chemotaxonomic trait of the genus Clavibacter, and galactofuranans with di-, tri-, or tetrasaccharide substituents of different composition and structures can serve as chemotaxonomic markers of the species. The data obtained expand our understanding of the structural diversity of natural glycopolymers and structural features of the bacterial cell walls in various taxa and may be of interest for taxonomic studies and the studies aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms of interaction between bacteria and plant cells. Neotropical cyclocephaline beetles, a diverse group of flower-loving insects, significantly impact natural and agricultural ecosystems. In particular, the genus Cyclocephala , with over 350 species, displays polymorphism and cryptic complexes. Lacking a comprehensive DNA barcoding framework, accessible tools for species differentiation are needed for research in taxonomy, ecology, and crop management. Moreover, cuticular hydrocarbons are believed to be involved in sexual recognition mechanisms in these beetles. In the present study we examined the cuticular chemical profiles of six species from the genus Cyclocephala and two populations of Erioscelis emarginata and assessed their efficiency in population, species, and sex differentiation. Overall we identified 74 compounds in cuticular extracts of the selected taxa. Linear alkanes and unsaturated hydrocarbons were prominent, with ten compounds between them explaining 85.6% of species dissimilarity. Although the cuticular chemical profiles efficiently differentiated all investigated taxa, only C. ohausiana showed significant cuticular profile differences between sexes. Our analysis also revealed two E. emarginata clades within a larger group of ' Cyclocephala' species, but they were not aligned with the two studied populations. Our research underscores the significance of cuticular lipid profiles in distinguishing selected cyclocephaline beetle species and contemplates their potential impact as contact pheromones on sexual segregation and speciation. This study investigates phytoplankton functional group variations in the western Bay of Bengal (WBoB) during the Spring Intermonsoon. Samples were collected from four cross-shore transects: Mahanadi (MN), Vamsadhara (VD), Godavari (GD), and Krishna (KS). East India Coastal Current and warm gyre influenced the southern transects (KS, GD), VD was experiencing moderate upwelling and MN was characterized by low salinity and oligotrophic conditions due to freshwater input. In response to hydrography, phytoplankton biomass and functional types differed within and between the transects. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) was spatially high in VD and low in MN. The subsurface Chlorophyll-a maxima (SSCM) was prominent and shallow in the MN and VD, compared to the southern transects. Total diagnostic pigments concentration was high in VD, followed by GD, KS and MN. Phytoplankton functional groups and each groups contribution to Chl-a was calculated through CHEmical Taxonomy (CHEMTAX). Diatoms and cyanophytes were the dominant functional types in the surface layers. Progressive shift from diatoms in the nearshore region to cyanophytes in the offshore was observed. The low saline and low-nutrient conditions were conducible for the growth of cyanophytes, while nutrient-rich optimum light layer of SSCM and upper layer of VD were favorable for diatoms. Cryptophytes contribution to Chl-a was higher in southern transects compared to the north. Prymnesiophytes and prasinophytes were high in the subsurface and deep layers could be due to their adaptions to light and nutrients. Because of the rich omega-3 fatty acids content, harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) oil is a popular supplement that is packaged as pills in Canada and sold for medicinal purposes, although this practice is banned in the United States. Due to US regulations, it is important to be able to distinguish between fish oil and seal oil, but the taxonomic determination of oils provenance has been a difficult problem to solve. In this study, Direct Analysis in Real Time time-of-flight mass spectrometry (DART TOFMS) was used to analyze the chemotypes of blubber samples collected from seven species of marine mammals, including seals, sea lions, and a porpoise. Results indicated that the chemotype profiles found in negative-ion mode could be used to separate all of the species using Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components (DAPC). Consequently, this study suggests that it may be possible to identify the taxonomic source of marine mammal oils based on chemical chemotypes.

Abstract Plants are one of the primary sources of natural products for drug development. However, despite centuries of research, only a limited region of the phytochemical space has been studied. To understand the scope of what is explored versus unexplored in the phytochemical space, we begin by reconstructing the known chemical space of the plant kingdom, mapping the distribution of secondary metabolites, chemical classes, and plants traditionally used for medicinal purposes (i.e., medicinal plants) across various levels of the taxonomy. We identify hotspot taxonomic clades occupied by a large proportion of medicinal plants and characterized secondary metabolites, as well as clades requiring further characterization with regard to their chemical composition. In a complementary analysis, we build a chemotaxonomy which has a high level of concordance with the taxonomy at the genus level, highlighting the close relationship between chemical profiles and evolutionary relationships within the plant kingdom. Next, we delve into regions of the phytochemical space with known bioactivity that have been used in modern drug discovery. While we find that the vast majority of approved drugs from phytochemicals are derived from known medicinal plants, we also show that medicinal and non-medicinal plants do not occupy distinct regions of the known phytochemical landscape and their phytochemicals exhibit properties similar to bioactive compounds. Moreover, we also reveal that only a few thousand phytochemicals have been screened for bioactivity and that there are hundreds of known bioactive compounds present in both medicinal and non-medicinal plants, suggesting that non-medicinal plants also have potential therapeutic applications. Overall, these results support the hypothesis that there are many plants with medicinal properties awaiting discovery.

Common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most valuable cereal crops worldwide. This study examined leaf extracts of 30 accessions of T. aestivum and its subspecies using 48 h maceration with methanol by GC-MS and GCxGC-MS. The plants were grown from seeds of the wheat genetics collection of the Wheat Genetics Sector of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, SB RAS. The analysis revealed 263 components of epicuticular waxes, including linear and branched alkanes, aliphatic alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, β-diketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, mono- and diterpenes, phytosterols, and tocopherols. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis were used to identify and visualize the differences between the leaf extracts of different wheat cultivars. Three clusters were identified, with the leading components being (1) octacosan-1-ol, (2) esters of saturated and unsaturated alcohols, and (3) fatty acid alkylamides, which were found for the first time in plant extracts. The results highlight the importance of metabolic studies in understanding the adaptive mechanisms and increasing wheat resistance to stress factors. These are crucial for breeding new-generation cultivars with improved traits.

Lonas annua (L.) Vines & Druce (Asteraceae), commonly known as African Daisy or Yellow Ageratum is a rare therophyte native to northwestern Africa (Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia) and Italy (Sicily and Sardinia). In the present study, the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Lonas annua was analyzed by GC-MS. No one report has been previously published on the essential oil of this species. The results showed the presence of large quantity of two unusual metabolites 2,3-dihydrofarnesol (41.64%), and acenaphthene (36.18%). Chemotaxonomic considerations were carried out in order to confirm the phylogenetic reconstructions of Anthemideae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Archaea play an important role in global biogeochemical cycles and are considered ancestral to eukaryotes. The unique lipid composition of archaea, characterized by isoprenoid alkyl chains and ether linkage to glycerol-1- phosphate, offers valuable insights into archaeal phylogeny and evolution. However, comprehensive studies focusing on archaeal lipidomes, especially at the intact polar lipid level, are currently limited. Here, we built an in-house library of archaeal lipids by using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass-spectrometry, which was integrated with bioinformatics and molecular network analyses. Seven halobacterial strains, representing three distinct orders, were cultured under identical conditions to investigate their lipidomes. A total of 162 features were identified, corresponding to 107 lipids that could be assigned to different strains. Clustering analyses of both core lipids and total lipids matched the phylogeny of Halobacteria at the order level. Notably, lipids such as triglycosyl diether-phosphatidyl acid and bis-sulfate glycosyl lipids were specific to particular groups and could serve as diagnostic intact lipid biomarkers for Halobacteria. Furthermore, the analysis of network-coordinated features facilitated the linkage of unknown lipid compounds to phylogeny, which promotes a lipidome to phylogeny matchup among three Haloferax strains, thereby expanding the knowledge of the halobacterial lipidome. Information is provided on the cell wall glycopolymers of members of eight species of the genus Rathayibacter (family Microbacteriaceae, class Actinomycetes). The composition, structure, and structural components of polymers that are common to the genus and characteristic of species are noted, which can be useful as chemotaxonomic characters.
