With the rapid development of the animal farming industry in China, the large amount of manure has caused a systematic environmental problem, while the demand for high-quality feed continues to increase. The application of dairy cattle slurry to alfalfa fields is a simple and inexpensive solution to the problems above. A repacked soil column study was conducted to investigate the effect of slurry nitrogen (N) on alfalfa biomass, as well as its photosynthetic characteristics. Dairy cattle slurry N or mineral fertilizer N was applied in two dressings at the first cut, with a target amount of 90 kg ha−1. A non-fertilization control (CK), a single mineral fertilizer N (MIN), and a slurry substitution for mineral N fertilizers (with equivalent N rate: FPS, 50% N from dairy cattle slurry; SLU, 100% N from dairy cattle slurry) were used. The results show that the slurry N increased the alfalfa biomass by 16.40–36.36% and the SPAD value by 30.27–61.34% with FPS and SLU treatments, respectively. Compared to the CK treatment, the FPS and SLU treatments meaningfully increased the net photosynthetic rate by 19.97–60.04% and 3.03–89.48%, the stomatal conductance by 10.53–57.14% and 15.38–88.89%, the intercellular CO2 concentration by 5.78–24.92% and 7.21–32.53%, and the transpiration rate by 13.16–103.50% and 16.44–111.19%. More specifically, compared with the CK treatment, the N absorption of the SLU treatment increased by 6.78–12.30%, and the use efficiency increased by 30.98–46.60% in the SLU treatment. Similarly, phosphorus (P) absorption of the SLU treatment increased by 36.73–52.57%, and the use efficiency increased by 30.98–46.60%. Overall, the dairy cattle slurry N was utilized efficiently as mineral N for alfalfa biomass, improved the photosynthetic characteristics of alfalfa leaves, and increased the N and P use efficiency. Our results clarify the optimal amount of dairy cattle slurry to be applied and provide a scientific basis for the use of dairy cattle slurry in agricultural systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a highly malignant tumor with striated muscle differentiation, which is histologically classified as alveolar, embryonal, pleomorphic, and spindle cell/sclerosing histological subtype. Rhabdomyosarcoma with TFCP2 rearrangement, which usually occurs in the bone, is a newly identified rare spindle and epithelioid rhabdomyosarcoma with characteristic clinicopathological features and molecular alterations. We report a 39-year-old female patient who underwent local excision of the mandibular lesion. Microscopically, the intraosseous tumor was composed of spindle-shaped, epithelioid, and rhabdomyoblastic cells with atypical nuclei and atypical mitotic figures. In addition, TFCP2 rearrangement was revealed by the fluorescence in situ hybridization. The tumor was thus correctly diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma with TFCP2 rearrangement. The patient was scheduled to undergo radiotherapy, and triple-agent chemotherapy after surgery, and no tumor recurrence or metastasis was detected during the 3-month postoperative follow up. Since this tumor is relatively rare and newly recognized, it can be easily misdiagnosed or missed and might be a conundrum of pathological diagnosis. Familiarity with its clinicopathological features and molecular alterations is essential for its correct diagnosis. DNA viruses commonly utilize immediate-early proteins to manipulate cellular signaling pathways in order to facilitate their infection. Our previous research has suggested that IE1, an immediate-early protein encoded by the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), may modulate the shrimp integrin-FAK signaling pathway. However, the specific molecular mechanism and role of IE1 in regulating this signaling pathway remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that IE1 competes for binding to the cytoplasmic tail of Penaeus vannamei integrin-α5, resulting in the inhibition of the integrin-α5-FAK interaction, thereby suppressing FAK activation and cell adhesion. Furthermore, we observed a significant increase in the expression of P. vannamei integrin-α5 and FAK following WSSV infection. Additionally, knockdown of integrin-α5 or FAK through RNA interference has been shown to reduce cell adhesion and enhance WSSV infection. Rationale and Objectives: The optimal prognostic assessment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) remains unclear. This study aimed to propose a novel staging system in comparison with the current staging systems for HCC following DEB-TACE., Materials and Methods: From four centers, patients with HCC undergoing DEB-TACE as the initial therapy were retrospectively included and classified into training and validation sets. Multivariable regression was used to determine the independent prognostic factors in the training set. A novel staging system incorporating the independent factors was proposed and externally validated in terms of discrimination and calibration compared to other staging systems in both sets., Results: The training and validation sets included 335 and 99 patients, respectively. Multivariable regression revealed independent factors including alpha-fetoprotein level, aspartate aminotransferase to lymphocyte count ratio index, maximum tumor diameter, Child-Pugh class, and portal vein invasion. The novel prognostic staging system, named PADCA, was proposed and outperformed other staging systems with the highest C-index, area under the curve, Wald test value, clinical benefit, and the lowest Akaike information criterion in the training and validation sets., Conclusion: The PADCA staging system has a superior prognostic predictive ability compared to the current staging systems.
