Background: Despite the increasing popularity of using social media to disseminate and translate knowledge, there remains a lack of theoretical understanding of how social media can work for healthcare providers’ knowledge use. The purpose of this thesis was to understand how and under what circumstances social media supports healthcare providers’ use of knowledge in clinical practice. Methods: Drawing on the tenets of scientific realism and the context (C) + mechanism (M) = outcome (O) (CMO) heuristic, a three-phase multi-method study was conducted to build a progressive theoretical understanding of how social media supports healthcare providers’ use of knowledge: 1) theory gleaning by a narrative review of five social media initiatives, five theories, and 58 empirical studies; 2) theory refining by a realist review of 32 articles; and 3) theory consolidation by a realist-informed qualitative study with 11 participants. Results: The Social Media for ImpLementing Evidence (SMILE) framework was developed in the theory gleaning phase. In the theory refining phase, two causal explanations were identified: 1) the rationality-driven approach that primarily uses open social media platforms (eight CMOs), and 2) the relationality-driven approach that primarily uses closed social media platforms (six CMOs). In the theory consolidation phase, the program theory developed for open social media platforms from the realist review was refined to ten CMOs, of which four confirmed the original CMOs, four refined the original CMOs, and two were new CMO propositions. The key mechanisms included content developers’ capabilities and capacities, along with healthcare providers’ increased attention; fulfillment of information needs; access to social influence and support; perception of message value and implementability; behaviour capabilities, self-efficacy, intention, and awareness; and ability to exercise professional autonomy. Conclusions: Through a three-phase realist theory development process, a theoretical understanding of how social media supports healthcare providers’ knowledge use in clinical practice was built. Future research is necessary to further develop this framework and investigate the synergistic effects of the rationality and relationality-driven approaches.

This research focuses on macrofungi in Baotianman Biosphere Reserve and their relationships with plant ecosystems. The findings demonstrate the reserve’s macrofungal resources. The study collected 832 specimens, among which 351 macrofungi species were identified, belonging to six classes, 19 orders, 54 familiae, and 124 genera, and one new species of Abortiporus was found. Among them, 11 familiae with a total of 231 species were dominated, accounting for 20.37% of the total number of familiae and 65.81% of the total number of species; 14 genera with a total of 147 species were dominated, accounting for about 11.38% the total number of genera and 41.88% of the total number of species. The richness of macrofungi at the species level was considerably different across the four vegetation types in the reserve, showing that the vegetation types had a bigger influence on macrofungi. In the evaluation of macrofungal resources, a total of 196 species of edible fungi, 121 species of medicinal fungi, 52 species of poisonous fungi, and 37 species of macrofungi with unclear economic value were counted. Abortiporus baotianmanensis is a new species of podoscyphaceae in the genus Abortiporus. The new species display the reserve’s richness. Next, the project seeks to generate and conserve macrofungal resources.

For most breast cancer (BC) patients who have undergone a mastectomy, the decision whether to proceed with breast reconstruction (BR) is complicated and requires deliberation. Shared decision-making (SDM) helps to address those needs and promote informed value-based decisions. However, little is known about the SDM status for BR in BC patients. This scoping review describes: 1) basic characteristics of studies on BR SDM in BC patients; 2) factors influencing BR SDM in BC patients; 3) experience and perception of BR SDM in BC patients; and 4) outcome measures reported. This review was performed in accordance with the Arksey and O’Malley methodology. A total of 5 English and 4 Chinese databases were searched, as well as different sources from grey literature. The data extraction form was developed by referring to the objectives and the Ottawa Decision Support Framework (ODSF). Data was analyzed using thematic analysis, framework analysis and descriptive statistics, with findings presented in the tables and diagrams. A total of 1481 records were retrieved and 42 of these included after screening. In 21 (21/42, 50%) of the studies, patient decision aids (PDAs) were utilized, and in 17 (17/42, 40.48%) of the studies, the factors influencing the implementation of SDM were explored. Of these 17 studies, the factors influencing the implementation of SDM were categorized into the following: the patient level (17/17, 100%), the healthcare level (2/17, 11.76%) and the organizational and system level (7/17, 41.18%). A total of 8 (19.05%) of the 42 studies focused on patients’ experiences and perceptions of SDM, and all studies used qualitative research methods. Of these 8 studies, a total of 7 (7/8, 87.50%) focused on patients’ experiences of SDM participation, and 4 (4/8, 50.00%) focused on patients’ perceptions of SDM. A total of 24 studies (24/42, 57.14%) involved quantitative outcome measures, where 49 items were divided into three classifications according to the outcomes of ODSF: the quality of the decision (17/24, 70.83%), the quality of the decision-making process (20/24, 83.33%), and impact (13/24, 54.17%). Although researchers have paid less attention to other research points in the field of SDM, compared to the design and application of SDM interventional tools, the research team still presents some equally noteworthy points through scoping review. For instance, the various factors influencing BC patients’ participation in SDM for BR (especially at the healthcare provider level and at the organizational system level), patients’ experiences and perceptions. Systematic reviews (SRs) should be conducted to quantify the impact of these different factors on BR SDM. Implementation of scientific theories and methods can inform the exploration and integration of these factors.

This is the registration for scoping review titled ‘Implementation determinants and strategies for knowledge translation in healthcare in China: protocol for a scoping review, social network analysis, and the development of a preliminary CFIR- ERICChina Matching tool’. There are no prior registrations. In Knowledge translation (KT), identifying the implementation determinants and adopting targeted implementation strategies play an important role in facilitating practice change. Currently, little is known about implementation determinants and strategies and their underlying relationship in KT in Chinese healthcare settings. This study aims to synthesize existing evidence on barriers, facilitators and implementation strategies of KT in Chinese healthcare settings and uncover their interactive relationships.

Sedentary behavior is defined as “any waking behavior characterized by a low energy expenditure while in a sitting, reclining or lying down posture”. Older adults are the most sedentary segment of society. Sedentary behavior has been considered an independent risk factor for chronic diseases and deleterious health outcomes. It is essential to reduce sedentary behavior for healthy aging. However, little is known about the characteristics of and behavior change techniques used in interventions for reducing sedentary behavior among older adults. Without this knowledge, it is challenging to build a practical evidence base for future intervention design and implementation. Hence, this scoping review aims to describe characteristics of the interventions, and identify behavior change techniques used in these interventions.
