We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS IFU observations of three Seyferts and showcase the intriguing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission characteristics in regions of $\sim 500\,\rm pc$ scales over or around their active galactic nuclei (AGN). Combining the model predictions and the measurements of PAH features and other infrared emission lines, we find that the central regions containing a high fraction of neutral PAHs with small sizes, e.g., those in ESO137-G034, are in highly heated environments, due to collisional shock heating, with hard and moderately intense radiation fields. Such environments are proposed to be associated with inhibited growth or preferential erosion of PAHs, decreasing the average PAH size and the overall abundance of PAHs. We additionally find that the central regions containing a high fraction of ionized PAHs with large sizes, e.g., those in MCG-05-23-016, are likely experiencing severe photo-ionization because of the radiative effects from the radiative shock precursor besides the AGN. The severe photo-ionization can contribute to the ionization of all PAHs and further destruction of small PAHs. Overall, different Seyferts, even different regions in the same galaxy, e.g., those in NGC\,3081, can contain PAH populations of different properties. Specifically, Seyferts that exhibit similar PAH characteristics to ESO137-G034 and MCG-05-23-016 also tend to have similar emission line properties to them, suggesting that the explanations for PAH characteristics of ESO137-G034 and MCG-05-23-016 may also apply generally. Utilizing JWST MIRI/MRS IFU observations of the kiloparsec scale central regions, we showcase the diversity of ionized gas distributions and kinematics in six nearby Seyfert galaxies included in the GATOS survey. Specifically, we present spatially resolved flux distribution and velocity field maps of six ionized emission lines covering a large range of ionization potentials ($15.8-97.1$ eV). Based on these maps, we showcase the evidence of ionized gas outflows in the six targets, and find some highly disturbed regions in NGC\,5728, NGC\,5506, and ESO137-G034. We propose AGN-driven radio jets plausibly play an important role in triggering these highly disturbed regions. With the outflow rates estimated based on [Ne~{\footnotesize V}] emission, we find the six targets tend to have ionized outflow rates converged to a narrower range than previous finding. Using neural networks to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) is gaining popularity as an alternative approach in the scientific computing community. Neural networks can integrate different types of information into the loss function. These include observation data, governing equations, and variational forms, etc. These loss functions can be broadly categorized into two types: observation data loss directly constrains and measures the model output, while other loss functions indirectly model the performance of the network, which can be classified as model loss. However, this alternative approach lacks a thorough understanding of its underlying mechanisms, including theoretical foundations and rigorous characterization of various phenomena. This work focuses on investigating how different loss functions impact the training of neural networks for solving PDEs. We discover a stable loss-jump phenomenon: when switching the loss function from the data loss to the model loss, which includes different orders of derivative information, the neural network solution significantly deviates from the exact solution immediately. Further experiments reveal that this phenomenon arises from the different frequency preferences of neural networks under different loss functions. We theoretically analyze the frequency preference of neural networks under model loss. This loss-jump phenomenon provides a valuable perspective for examining the underlying mechanisms of neural networks in solving PDEs.

Polar dust has been discovered in a number of local Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), with radiation-driven torus models predicting a wind to be its main driver. However, little is known about its characteristics, spatial extent, or connection to the larger scale outflows. We present the first JWST/MIRI study aimed at imaging polar dust by zooming onto the centre of ESO 428-G14, part of the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) survey of local AGN. We detect extended mid-infrared (MIR) emission within 200 pc from the nucleus. This polar structure is co-linear with a radio jet and lies perpendicular to a molecular gas lane that feeds and obscures the nucleus. Its morphology bears a striking resemblance to that of gas ionised by the AGN in the narrow-line region. We demonstrate that part of this spatial correspondence is due to contamination within the JWST filter bands from strong emission lines. Correcting for the contamination, we find the morphology of the dust continuum to be more compact, though still clearly extended out to ~ 100 pc. We estimate the emitting dust has a temperature of ~ 120 K. Using simple models, we find that the heating of small dust grains by the radiation from the central AGN and/or radiative jet-induced shocks is responsible for the extended MIR emission. Radiation-driven dusty winds from the torus is unlikely to be important. The spin transverse relaxation time (T_2) of atoms is an important indicator for precision measurement. Several methods have been proposed to characterize the T_2 of atoms. In this paper, the T_2 of rubidium (Rb) atomic vapor in the same cell was measured using four measuring methods, namely spin noise spectrum signal fitting, improved free induction decay (FID) signal fitting, w_m-broadening fitting, and magnetic resonance broadening fitting. Meanwhile, the T_2 of five different types of Rb atomic vapor cells were measured and characterized. A comparative analysis visualizes the characteristics of the different measuring methods and the effects of buffer gas on T_2 of Rb. We theoretically and experimentally analyzed the applicability of the different methods, and then demonstrated that the improved FID signal fitting method provides the most accurate measurement because of the clean environment in which the measurements were taken. Furthermore, we demonstrated and qualitatively analyzed the relationship between the atomic number density and the T_2 of Rb. This work provides analytical insight in selecting atomic vapor cells, and may shed light on the improvement of the sensitivity of atomic magnetometers.

In a magnetic field detection system,to achieve high-sensitivity magnetic field measurement, it is necessary to use uniform magnetic field coils to provide a stable working environment, so the measurement of the magnetic field coilsconstant is of great significance. To accurately measure the magnetic field and compare the coil constant, we employed two different methods under good magnetic shielding conditions: the optically-pumped rubidium free-induction decay magnetometry and the fluxgate magnetometry. In terms of measuring coil constant, the optically-pumped rubidium FID magnetometer performs better than fluxgate magnetometer due to its high-sensitivity and good signal-to-noise ratio. We compare the magnetic field measured by the FID magnetometer with that of the fluxgate magnetometer and obtain a calibration factor of 0.9967. The calibration of fluxgate magnetometer with optically-pumped atomic magnetometer is realized. We combine mid-infrared diagnostics obtained from integral-field unit observations taken with MIRI/MRS on JWST with cold molecular gas information derived from ALMA observations of CO(1-0) emission to investigate the star formation rate and efficiency within the central $\sim$ 1.5 kpc$\times$1.3 kpc region of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 on $\sim$ 100 pc scales. The active nucleus leaves a notable imprint on its immediate surroundings by elevating the temperature of the warm molecular gas, driving an ionized gas outflow on sub-kpc scales, and selectively destroying small dust grains. These effects, nevertheless, have relatively little impact on the cold circumnuclear medium or its ability to form stars. This paper introduces a method for characterizing the current noise of commercial constant-current sources(CCSs) using a free-induction-decay(FID) type optically-pumped rubidium atomic magnetometer driven by a radio-frequency(RF) magnetic field. We convert the sensitivity of the atomic magnetometer into the current noise of CCS by calibrating the coil constant. At the same time, the current noise characteristics of six typical commercial low-noise CCSs are compared. The current noise level of the KeySight Model B2961A is the lowest among the six tested CCSs, which is 36.233 0.022 nA / Hz1/2 at 1-25 Hz and 133.905 0.080 nA / Hz1/2 at 1-100 Hz respectively. The sensitivity of atomic magnetometer is dependent on the current noise level of the CCS. The CCS with low noise is of great significance for high-sensitivity atomic magnetometer. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which signify the end-life collapsing of very massive stars, are produced by extremely relativistic jets colliding into circumstellar medium. Huge energy is released both in the first few seconds, namely the internal dissipation phase that powers prompt emissions, and in the subsequent self-similar jet-deceleration phase that produces afterglows observed in broad-band electromagnetic spectrum. However, prompt optical emissions of GRBs have been rarely detected, seriously limiting our understanding of the transition between the two phases. Here we report detection of prompt optical emissions from a gamma-ray burst (i.e. GRB 201223A) using a dedicated telescope array with a high temporal resolution and a wide time coverage. The early phase coincident with prompt {\gamma}-ray emissions show a luminosity in great excess with respect to the extrapolation of {\gamma}-rays, while the later luminosity bump is consistent with onset of the afterglow. Online real estate platforms are gaining increasing popularity, where a central issue is to match brokers with clients for potential housing transactions. Mainstream platforms match brokers via top-k recommendation. Yet we observe through extensive data analysis that such top-k recommendation tends to overload the top brokers, which notably degrades their service quality. In this paper, we propose to avoid such overloading in broker matching via the paradigm shift from recommendation to assignment. To this end, we design learned assignment with contextual bandits (LACB), a data-driven capacity-aware assignment scheme for broker matching which estimates broker-specific workload capacity in an online fashion and assigns brokers to clients from a global perspective to maximize the overall service quality. A free-induction-decay (FID) type optically-pumped rubidium atomic magnetometer driven by a radio-frequency (RF) magnetic field is presented in this paper. Influences of parameters, such as the temperature of rubidium vapor cell, the power of pump beam, and the strength of RF magnetic field and static magnetic field on the amplitude and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the FID signal, have been investigated in the time domain and frequency domain. At the same time, the sensitivities of the magnetometer for the single-pass and the triple-pass probe beam cases have been compared by changing the optical path of the interaction between probe beam and atomic ensemble. Compared with the sensitivity of ~21.2 pT/Hz^(1/2) in the case of the single-pass probe beam, the amplitude of FID signal in the case of the triple-pass probe beam has been significantly enhanced, and the sensitivity has been improved to ~13.4 pT/Hz^(1/2). Emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a promising tool for estimating star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies, but the origin of its sources of excitation, which include not only young but possibly also old stars, remains uncertain. We analyze Spitzer mid-infrared mapping-mode spectroscopic observations of the nuclear and extra-nuclear regions of 33 nearby galaxies to study the contribution of evolved stars to PAH emission. In combination with photometric measurements derived from ultraviolet, H{\alpha}, and infrared images, the spatially resolved spectral decomposition enables us to characterize the PAH emission, SFR, and stellar mass of the sample galaxies on sub-kpc scales. We demonstrate that the traditional empirical correlation between PAH luminosity and SFR has a secondary dependence on specific SFR, or, equivalently, stellar mass. Ultraviolet-faint regions with lower specific SFRs and hence greater fraction of evolved stars emit stronger PAH emission at fixed SFR than ultraviolet-bright regions. We reformulate the PAH-based SFR estimator by explicitly introducing stellar mass as a second parameter to account for the contribution of evolved stars to PAH excitation. The influence of evolved stars can explain the sub-linear correlation between PAH emission and SFR, and it can partly account for the PAH deficit in dwarf galaxies and low-metallicity environments., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, ApJ in press

Emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a commonly used indicator of star formation activity in galaxies, also has the potential to serve as an effective empirical tracer of molecular gas. We use a sample of 19 nearby galaxies with spatially resolved mid-infrared Spitzer spectroscopy, multi-wavelength optical and mid-infrared imaging, and millimeter interferometric CO(1-0) maps to investigate the feasibility of using PAH emission as an empirical proxy to estimate molecular gas mass. PAH emission correlates strongly with CO emission on sub-kpc scales over the diverse environments probed by our sample of star-forming galaxies and low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. The tight observed correlation, likely a consequence of photoelectronic heating of the diffuse interstellar gas by the PAHs, permits us to derive an empirical calibration to estimate molecular gas mass from the luminosity of PAH emission that has a total scatter of only {\sim} 0.2 - 0.25 dex. We combined mapping-mode mid-infrared Spitzer spectra with complementary infrared imaging to perform a spatially resolved study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission from the central regions of 66 nearby galaxies, roughly evenly divided into star-forming systems and low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In conjunction with similar measurements available for quasars, we aim to understand the physical properties of PAHs across a broad range of black hole accretion power, with the goal of identifying observational diagnostics that can be used to probe the effect of AGNs on the host galaxy. Whereas the PAH emission correlates tightly with far-ultraviolet luminosity in star-forming regions, the spatially resolved regions of AGNs tend to be PAH-deficient. Moreover, AGN regions exhibit on average smaller PAH 6.2 {\mu}m/7.7 {\mu}m and larger PAH 11.3 {\mu}m/7.7 {\mu}m band ratios. Although the current data are highly restrictive, they suggest that these anomalous PAH band ratios cannot be explained by the effects of the AGN radiation field alone. Instead, they hint that small grains may be destroyed by the combined effects of radiative processes and shocks, which are plausibly linked to jets and outflows preferentially associated with highly sub-Eddington, radiatively inefficient AGNs. It is commonly believed that financial crises "lead to" lower growth of a country during the two-year recession period, which can be reflected by their post-crisis GDP growth. However, by contrasting a causal model with a standard prediction model, this paper argues that such a belief is non-causal. To make causal inferences, we design a two-stage staggered difference-in-differences model to estimate the average treatment effects.
