The effect of impurity on edge turbulence was investigated on the HL-2A tokamak using neon supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI). For the first time, a stationary radiative layer accompanied by edge localized turbulence (ELT) lasting more than 100 ms is observed at the edge region $\rho = 0.7\sim0.9$ . This duration is much longer than the SMBI pulse length (1.2 ms), indicating that the impurity diffusion is on the whole canceled out by the impurity convection without spreading of the localized turbulence during this period. This implies that the impurity convection is reversed from the positive to the negative impurity density gradient region. This reversal could be explained by the parallel impurity compression mechanism. The observed turbulence is a broadband electrostatic turbulence (25–70 kHz) propagating in the electron diamagnetic drift direction with a normalized poloidal wavenumber of $0.1 \unicode{x2A7D} {k_\theta }{\rho _{\text{s}}} \unicode{x2A7D} 0.4$ . It has been found that the excitation of the ELT strongly depends on the local collisionality ${\nu ^*}$ . This feature is qualitatively predicted by the spectral multiscale gyrokinetic turbulence simulation, which suggests that the turbulence could be a dissipative trapped electron mode. This experiment demonstrates that mutual interaction between externally injected impurity ions and edge turbulence can generate a stationary edge radiative layer and avoid impurity core accumulation. These results could provide a potential approach for the formation of a stable impurity radiative layer by impurity injection in tokamaks.

Recent observations on the HL-2A tokamak give new experimental evidence of resonant tearing modes (r-TMs) caused by the redistribution of energetic ions (EIs) due to sawtooth collapses in neutral beam injection plasmas. The $m/n = 2/1$ ( m and n are the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers) r-TMs with frequencies chirping down rapidly are found after strong bursts of fishbone modes and closely followed strong sawtooth collapses. The frequencies of fishbone modes and r-TMs chirp down from 10 to 7 kHz and 5 to 2 kHz rapidly, higher and lower than the 4–6 kHz existing weak resistive TMs. The fishbone modes propagate in ion diamagnetic drift directions in poloidal. In contrast, r-TMs propagate in the electron diamagnetic drift direction, though r-TMs are excited by EIs. It is suggested that counter-passing EIs, which originated from redistribution of EIs due to fishbone modes and combined with sawtooth collapses, excite r-TMs. Simulation results from the M3D-K code reveal that the counter-passing EIs play an important role in the excitation of r-TMs. The results can help broaden understanding of the interaction mechanisms between energetic particles and TMs, and open up a new perspective on the excitation mechanism of r-TMs.

The role of a series of quasi-coherent modes (QCMs) on the turbulence properties has been investigated during Type-III ELMs under HL-2A high confinement mode (H-mode) scenarios. The QCMs are essentially electrostatic and appear during the inter-ELM periods, with a frequency ranging from 20 kHz to 60 kHz. These QCMs are localized in the pedestal region and are related to the saturation of density gradient in the pedestal. Nonlinear couplings between QCMs and ambient turbulence have been observed and also verified through the envelope modulation of turbulence in density by the radial electrical field fluctuation of the modes. The presence of QCMs can increase the radial and poloidal turbulence correlation lengths, thereby modulating the turbulent transport. Experimental results show that QCMs significantly impact pedestal turbulence and transport by increasing the correlation length as well as the decorrelation time of turbulent eddies. The flow shearing rate in pedestal region is also enhanced to a level that surpasses the decorrelation frequency of turbulence, thus, the existence of QCMs has the ability to put off the ELM burst due to relative stronger stabilization of turbulence by sheared flows. The above results have demonstrated that the pedestal dynamics is largely determined by the complex interactions among QCMs, turbulence and the shear flow.

A divertor detachment with sustainable high-performance plasmas has been achieved through divertor nitrogen seeding in the HL-2A tokamak. The closed divertor structure facilitates achieving high divertor neutral pressure due to its efficient particle containment effect as demonstrated by both experimental and SOLPS simulation results, which aids in achieving the divertor detachment. The radiative divertor is conducive to high-frequency small edge localized modes (ELMs) operation, characterized by a reduced pedestal ion temperature gradient $\nabla {T_{\text{i}}}$ and the enhanced electron density gradient $\nabla {n_{\text{e}}}$ . The presence of minority nitrogen at the edge plasma, which results from the divertor nitrogen seeding, contributes to the increase of ion temperature ${T_{\text{i}}}$ in the confinement region by suppressing the turbulence through the impurity dilution effect and ${\mathbf{E}} \times {\mathbf{B}}$ shear. The increased ion temperature ${T_{\text{i}}}$ and electron density $n_e$ compensate the energy loss resulting from the increased edge radiation during detachment, which contributes to the confinement sustainment combined with reduced pedestal energy loss caused by small ELMs. This work advances our understanding of the fundamental physics governing closed divertor detachment with sustainable high-performance plasmas through divertor nitrogen seeding.

Since the first plasma realized in 2020, a series of key systems on HL-3 (known as HL-2M before) tokamak have been equipped/upgraded, including in-vessel components (the first wall, lower divertor, and toroidal cryogenic/water-cooling/baking/glow discharge systems, etc.), auxiliary heating system of 11 MW, and 28 diagnostic systems (to measure the plasma density, electron temperature, radiation, magnetic field, etc.). Magnet field systems were commissioned firstly for divertor plasma discharges. During the 2nd experimental campaign of HL-3 tokamak, several great progresses have been achieved. Firstly, the successful operation with plasma current larger than 1 MA was achieved under a divertor configuration. Secondly, the advanced divertor concept with two distinct snowflake configurations was realized. It is found that the distribution of ion saturation current and heat flux on bottom plate becomes wide due to magnetic surface expansion, demonstrating the advantage of such configuration in the heat flux mitigation. In addition, using the combination of NBI, ECRH and LHCD, the standard sawtoothing high confinement mode of megampere plasma was firstly accessed on the HL-3. The successful commissioning of HL-3 is beneficial for the initial operation of ITER.

A low-frequency zonal flow-like (LFZF-like) structure peaking at f ≈ 2.0 kHz has been observed in HL-2A ohmically heated deuterium plasmas using a combined Langmuir probe array. This time-varying potential structure, which has axisymmetric characteristics ( n = 0) and a finite radial correlation length (less than 1 cm), was identified to be generated by the three-wave interaction in small-scale turbulence. The results illustrate that the amplitude of the LFZF-like structure dramatically increases with the influence of impurity ions, which is mainly due to the increased strength in the nonlinear energy transfer by the turbulence vortex symmetry-breaking process. Consequently, the enhanced LFZF-like structure has the ability to stabilize the local turbulence via the shearing decorrelation mechanism as demonstrated in this experiment. The observed results given here reveal the essential role played by the LFZF-like structure in the reduction of turbulence levels, which could advance our understanding of the multi-scale physics governing turbulence and the resulting transport in magnetically confined plasmas.

Reduction of both the plasma density and toroidal flow speed, due to application of the predominantly n = 1 ( n is the toroidal mode number) resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) for controlling the edge localized mode in the HL-2A tokamak, is numerically investigated utilizing the quasi-linear initial-value code MARS-Q (Liu et al 2013 Phys. Plasmas 20 042503). Simulation results reveal that the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) due to three dimensional fields plays the key role in modifying the plasma momentum and particle transport in the HL-2A discharge. By comparing the modeling results with the measured density pump-out in the experiment, the electron NTV particle flux model, in combination with the free-boundary condition for the axisymmetric change of the density at the plasma edge, is found to yield the best agreement in terms of both the pump-out level and the overall time scale. Further sensitivity studies show that the simulated density pump-out level is reasonably robust against variations in the model assumptions, including the particle diffusion model and the non-ambipolar versus ambipolar NTV particle flux. The latter however affects the time scale for reaching the steady state solution. Finally, it is found that the plasma edge-peeling response, the NTV torque, as well as the plasma momentum and particle transport, all are sensitive to the toroidal phase difference between the upper and lower rows of the RMP coil currents in HL-2A, with the 30 ^∘ coil phasing producing the minimal side effects on the plasma.

A reduced-turbulence regime has been observed in HL-2A NBI-heated deuterium plasmas. The transition to this regime is achieved by injecting a certain amount of tungsten into the plasma based on the laser blow-off technique. It has been found that the amplitude of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) zonal flow and turbulent vortex size together with eddy tilting angle are all significantly increased in the edge region after tungsten injection. However, the frequency of GAM zonal flow remains nearly unchanged. Measurement shows the nonlinear coupling degree of turbulence dramatically increases while the collisional damping of GAM zonal flow drops slightly. We conclude that the increased nonlinear coupling is the main cause of the excitation of GAM zonal flow, which consequently results in the reduction in turbulent transport as observed in this experiment. These results indicate that tungsten ions play an active role in turbulence-GAM dynamics through a symmetry-breaking mechanism, which could help us to better understand the inherent physical mechanisms governing turbulent transport in the presence of high- Z impurity ions in fusion plasmas.

Recent progress towards an increased understanding of detached divertor physics has been made with the highly closed divertor geometry in HL-2A. Non-intrinsic impurities were injected into the outer divertor chamber, and increased divertor neutral pressure and enhanced volumetric energy loss in the divertor were observed. Meanwhile the neutral pressure in the main chamber decreased slightly, and neutral compression between the divertor and main chamber increased greatly. This led to divertor detachment with a low upstream plasma line-averaged electron density ( $\sim0.5{n_{{\text{GW}}}}$ ). In the H-mode, slight degradation of the core confinement, characterized by a decrease in plasma stored energy and pedestal pressure and an increase in edge-localized mode frequency, was observed, but the H-mode was still sustained well with H _98 > 1. Pedestal density fluctuation was increased during detachment, implying that the enhanced pedestal transport might be responsible for the degradation. During the divertor detachment phase, the impurities were well controlled in the divertor without strong radiation near the X-point region, and the main plasma density did not increase but decreased slightly; this could be a benefit of the highly closed divertor geometry. The experimental results suggest that a closed divertor geometry has the advantages of volumetric energy loss, gas pumping and impurity control in the divertor without significant effects on the plasma confinement, thus giving a wider operating window for divertor detachment.

Improved energy confinement mode (I-mode) has been observed on the HL-2A tokamak. The I-mode features an edge transport barrier (ETB) in electron temperature and a low confinement mode like edge density. A weakly coherent mode (WCM) is observed in the edge region with the frequency of $f\sim 60{-}160$ kHz and the poloidal wavenumber of ${k_\theta }\sim 0.5{-}2.5{\text{cm}}{^{ - 1}}$ . The maximum of WCM amplitude is located near the top of electron temperature pedestal. A critical value of $E \times B$ velocity shear for triggering the L–I transition has been found, and is much lower than that for triggering the L–H transition. Additionally, ion internal transport barrier (ITB) has been observed in the I-mode. The formation of ion ITB is due to the increase of $E \times B$ velocity shear, leading to the suppression of turbulence. Transport analysis further confirms the existence of electron ETB and ion ITB. The coexistence of electron ETB and ion ITB leads to an improved plasma confinement, which is comparable to that in the high confinement mode, suggesting that I-mode with ITB regimes could be an interesting operation scenario for future fusion devices.
