Molecule interacting with CasL 1 (MICAL1) is a crucial protein involved in cell motility, axon guidance, cytoskeletal dynamics, and gene transcription. This pan-cancer study analyzed MICAL1 across 33 cancer types using bioinformatics and experiments. Dysregulated expression, diagnostic potential, and prognostic value were assessed. Associations with tumor characteristics, immune factors, and drug sensitivity were explored. Enrichment analysis revealed MICAL1’s involvement in metastasis, angiogenesis, metabolism, and immune pathways. Functional experiments demonstrated its impact on renal carcinoma cells. These findings position MICAL1 as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in specific cancers, warranting further investigation into its role in cancer pathogenesis.

Abstract Background Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent urological disease in elderly males. However, few studies have estimated the temporal and spatial distributions of the BPH burden in male adults aged 60 years and over at the global, national, and regional scales. Methods Leveraging the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study, we estimated the global epidemiological trends in the prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of BPH in 204 countries and 21 regions and 5 sociodemographic index (SDI) regions in males aged 60 years and over between 1990 and 2019. The average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) in age-specific rates were estimated to quantify overall trends. We estimated the contribution of population aging and epidemiological alterations in disease burden via composition analysis. Results Over the past three decades, the global prevalent cases, incident cases and DALYs of BPH have increased, ranging from 118.78 to 121.22%. The global number of prevalent BPH cases reached 79 million in people aged 60 years and older in 2019. The prevalence, incidence, and DALYs rates gradually increased, with AAPCs of 0.02, 0.02, and 0.01, respectively. Low-middle, middle, and low SDI regions experienced rapid increases in the number of prevalent cases of BPH. In 2019, China, India, and United States of America bore the largest burden of prevalent cases among people aged 60 years and over. The three regions with the highest prevalence rates of BPH were Eastern Europe, Central Latin America, and Andean Latin America. The increased prevalence was attributed to population growth (94.93%), epidemiological changes (3.45%), and aging (1.62%), globally. Conclusions BPH is a global health issue that imposes substantial economic burdens on most countries, particularly males aged 60 years and over. Effective health decisions are imperative for BPH prevention and treatment.

Abstract Purpose Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common malignancy in men, with an escalating mortality rate attributed to Recurrence and metastasis. Recent studies have illuminated collagen’s critical regulatory role within the tumor microenvironment, significantly influencing tumor progression. Accordingly, this investigation is dedicated to examining the relationship between genes linked to collagen and the prognosis of PCa, with the objective of uncovering any possible associations between them. Methods Gene expression data for individuals with prostate cancer were obtained from the TCGA repository. Collagen-related genes were identified, leading to the development of a risk score model associated with biochemical recurrence-free survival (BRFS). A prognostic nomogram integrating the risk score with essential clinical factors was crafted and evaluated for efficacy. The influence of key collagen-related genes on cellular behavior was confirmed through various assays, including CCK8, invasion, migration, cell cloning, and wound healing. Immunohistochemical detection was used to evaluate PLOD3 expression in prostate cancer tissue samples. Results Our study identified four key collagen-associated genes (PLOD3, COL1A1, MMP11, FMOD) as significant. Survival analysis revealed that low-risk groups, based on the risk scoring model, had significantly improved prognoses. The risk score was strongly associated with prostate cancer prognosis. Researchers then created a nomogram, which demonstrated robust predictive efficacy and substantial clinical applicability.Remarkably, the suppression of PLOD3 expression notably impeded the proliferation, invasion, migration, and colony formation capabilities of PCa cells. Conclusion The risk score, derived from four collagen-associated genes, could potentially act as a precise prognostic indicator for BRFS of patients. Simultaneously, our research has identified potential therapeutic targets related to collagen. Notably, PLOD3 was differentially expressed in cancer and para-cancer tissues in clinical specimens and it also was validated through in vitro studies and shown to suppress PCa tumorigenesis following its silencing.

Abstract Background Erectile dysfunction (ED) is closely associated with dyslipidemia; however, it is yet unknown how ED and remnant cholesterol (RC) are related. As such, this research sought to explore the correlation between RC and ED among individuals with diagnosed with diabetes. Methods This cross-sectional study used information from 215 males from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2004. RC was calculated as follows: the values of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were subtracted from the total cholesterol (TC) value, while ED diagnoses were based on self-reports. Weighted logistic regression analyses using both univariate and multivariate approaches were conducted to assess the correlation between RC and ED. Results After comprehensive adjustment, multivariable logistic regression models revealed a strong correlation between RC and ED in subjects with diabetes (with an odds ratio (OR) of 7.49 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.98–28.37; P = 0.004). On categorizing RC into 3 grades (T1-T3), the OR corresponding to higher RC grade increased. High performance concrete (HPC) has the characteristics of high strength, high brittleness and low toughness, so it can not be widely used in engineering field. The rubber particles themselves have good elasticity and excellent wear resistance. To this end, rubber particles were used to prepare high performance rubber concrete (HPRC) instead of fine aggregate, and compressive strength and splitting tensile strength tests were carried out according to standard test methods. These data were evaluated, and it was found that adding different mesh number (10 mesh, 20 mesh, 30 mesh) and different content (10%, 20%, 30%) of rubber particles reduced the compressive and tensile properties of high-performance rubber concrete to different degrees. The rubber particles with l size of 30 mesh and content of 10% have the least influence on the mechanical properties of high-performance rubber concrete, and the compressive strength and tensile strength of HPC 28 days only decrease by 18.19% and 5.56%, respectively. From the damage form, the addition of rubber particles makes the high performance concrete change from brittle to ductile. The research shows that recycling rubber from waste tires into concrete manufacturing is an environmentally friendly and feasible waste management strategy. These results have the potential to replace concrete in construction and promote sustainable growth.

Background: Individual dietary antioxidants have been shown to be protective factors against kidney stone disease (KSD). However, the correlation between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI), a reliable indicator for the total dietary antioxidant intake, and KSD has not yet been investigated. Objectives: To evaluate the association between the CDAI and prevalence of KSD in American adults. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007–2018. Participants aged ≥ 20 years with a self-reported history of KSD and CDAI were included. Weighted proportions and multivariate regression models were used to study the independent relationship between KSD and CDAI. Generalized additive model (GAM) and smooth curve fitting were performed to explore the potential non-linear correlation, and a two-piecewise linear regression model was then applied to examine the threshold effect and to calculate the turning point. Results: A total of 29 763 adults were included, with a mean CDAI of 0.64. The prevalence of KSD was 10.02 %. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that the CDAI was negatively correlated with KSD [OR(95 %CI) = 0.979 (0.962, 0.996),p = 0.018]. Compared to participants in the lowest CDAI quartile, those in the highest CDAI quartile had a significantly lower kidney stone prevalence [OR(95 %CI) = 0.786 (0.667, 0.926),p = 0.004]. Smooth curve fitting and piecewise linear regression suggested that the turning point of the CDAI was 4.146. Abstract Purpose Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the major tumor diseases that threaten men’s health globally, and biochemical recurrence significantly impacts its prognosis. Disulfidptosis, a recently discovered cell death mechanism triggered by intracellular disulfide accumulation leading to membrane rupture, is a new area of research in the context of PCa. Currently, its impact on PCa remains largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the correlation between long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) associated with disulfidptosis and the prognosis of PCa, seeking potential connections between the two. Methods Transcriptomic data for a PCa cohort were obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas database. Disulfidptosis-related lncRNAs (DDRLs) were identified through differential expression and Pearson correlation analysis. DDRLs associated with biochemical recurrence-free survival (BRFS) were precisely identified using univariate Cox and LASSO regression, resulting in the development of a risk score model. Clinical factors linked to BRFS were determined through both univariate and multivariate Cox analyses. A prognostic nomogram combined the risk score with key clinical variables. Model performance was assessed using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, Decision Curve Analysis (DCA), and calibration curves. The functional impact of a critical DDRL was substantiated through assays involving CCK8, invasion, migration, and cell cloning. Additionally, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for the disulfidptosis-related protein SLC7A11 was conducted. Results The prognostic signature included AC026401.3, SNHG4, SNHG25, and U73166.1 as key components. The derived risk score from these signatures stood as one of the independent prognostic factor for PCa patients, correlating with poorer BRFS in the high-risk group. By combining the risk score with clinical variables, a practical nomogram was created, accurately predicting BRFS of PCa patients. Notably, silencing AC026401.3 significantly hindered PCa cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and colony formation. IHC staining revealed elevated expression of the dithiosulfatide-related protein SLC7A11 in tumor tissue. Conclusions A novel prognostic signature for PCa DDRLs, possessing commendable predictive power, has been constructed, simultaneously providing potential therapeutic targets associated with disulfidptosis, among which AC026401.3 has been validated in vitro and demonstrated inhibition of PCa tumorigenesis after its silencing.

Abstract Background SPOCK3 is a secreted extracellular matrix proteoglycan. This study aimed to investigate the effect of SPOCK3 on the malignant progression of prostate cancer and to construct a prognostic model to predict DFS of patients with prostate cancer. Methods Clinical and transcriptome sequencing data for prostate cancer were download from the TCGA and GEO databases. The survival curve showed that SPOCK3 has prognostic significance. GO, KEGG, and GSEA enrichment analysis were used to investigate how SPOCK3 affects the malignant progression of prostate cancer. Based on ESTIMATE and ssGSEA, the relationship between SPOCK3 and immune cell infiltration in prostate cancer tissue was clarified. Univariate and multivariate COX regression analysis was used to identify the independent prognostic factors of prostate cancer OS and to construct a nomogram. The calibration curve and ROC curves were drawn to assess the nomogram's predictive power. Results The survival curve revealed that patients in the low-expression group of SPOCK3 had a poor prognosis. According to enrichment analysis, SOPCK3-related genes were enriched in collagen-containing extracellular matrix, PI3K-Akt, and MAPK signaling pathway. ESTIMATE analysis revealed that SPOCK3 expression was positively correlated with the interstitial score, immune score, and ESTIMATE score. The results of ssGSEA analysis revealed that the infiltration levels of Mast cells, NK cells, and B cells were higher in the SPOCK3 high expression group. Cox regression analysis showed that SPOCK3 expression level, T and Gleason score were independent risk factors of patient prognosis, and a nomogram was constructed. The ROC curve showed the AUCs of DFS at 2, 3, and 5 years. Conclusion SPOCK3 is a protective factor for DFS in prostate cancer patients. SPOCK3 is significantly associated with immune cell infiltration. The prognostic model constructed based on SPOCK3 has excellent predictive performance.

Abstract Objective To explore the association between circadian syndrome (CircS) and the prevalence of kidney stones in overweight people. Materials and methods A cross-sectional analysis was conducted based on the NHANES 2007–2018. Overweight people aged ≥ 20 years were the target population. Three multivariable logistic regression models were built to examine the association between CircS and kidney stones. Subgroup analysis based on age, gender, and race were also employed. Interaction and stratification analysis was also conducted to identify whether some factors modify the association. Result A total of 4,603 overweight participants were included in the study. The multivariable logistic regression suggested that CircS was positively associated with the prevalence of kidney stones (OR = 1.422, 95% CI 1.057 to 1.912). The subgroup analysis showed that the association was more obvious in females (OR = 1.604, 95% CI 1.023 to 2.516) or in the population aged 35 to 49 years old (OR = 2.739, 95% CI 1.428 to 5.254). Additionally, the same trend was present when people were Mexican American (OR = 3.834, 95% CI 1.790 to 8.215) or other races (OR = 4.925, 95% CI 1.776 to 13.656). The interaction and stratification analysis showed that the results above were robust. Conclusion CircS was positively associated with the prevalence of kidney stones in overweight people, especially people as females, aged 35 to 49, and Mexican Americans.

ObjectiveThis study aims to examine the correlation between overactive bladder (OAB) and food insecurity.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis utilizing extensive population data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2018. The status of Household food insecurity is evaluated by the US Food Security Survey Module. To explore the relationship between food insecurity and OAB, three multivariable logistic regression models were carried out. Additionally, interaction and stratified analyses were also performed to find whether some factors have the potential to alter the correlation.ResultsThere were 29,129 participants enrolled in the study. Compared to the other three groups, individuals with full food security exhibited a lower proportion of nocturia, urinary urgency incontinence, and OAB. In the fully-adjusted model, it was found that people experiencing food insecurity have a significantly higher prevalence of OAB compared to those with food security in the fully-adjusted model (OR = 1.540, 95%CI 1.359–1.745). Additionally, there was a significant association between the levels of food insecurity and an increased risk of OAB prevalence was also observed (marginal food security: OR = 1.312, low food security: OR = 1.559, and very low food security: OR = 1.759). No significant interaction was seen in the fully-adjusted model.ConclusionThere is a strong positive correlation between food insecurity and the prevalence of OAB. Similarly, the correlation between levels of food insecurity and OAB also indicates the same trend. Namely, the more insecure food, the higher risk of OAB prevalence in the population.

This paper investigates the problem of distributed dynamic event-triggered formation control for multiple unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) subject to external disturbances. Firstly, a novel event-based distributed formation control scheme is proposed, under an undirected communication graph. Wherein, a dynamic event-triggered data transmission mechanism is designed for communication resource reduction. The time-varying dynamic parameter ensures fewer triggering instants and a larger triggering time interval compared with the traditional static one. The adaptive laws are incorporated into the formation control scheme to address the effects of external disturbances and uncertainties. Subsequent to the theoretical analysis, it can be concluded that the relative tracking errors can converge to the origin, and all closed-loop signals are bounded. Moreover, it is proved that the triggering time sequences do not exhibit Zeno behavior. Finally, a numerical simulation is performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed distributed formation controller.

ObjectiveTo explore the association between the prevalence of circadian syndrome (CircS) and overactive bladder (OAB).Materials and methodsCross-section analysis was based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005–2018. Data regarding OAB was collected from questionnaires. The association between the prevalence of CircS and OAB was elucidated using three multivariable logistic regression models. Stratified and interaction analyses were performed to find whether some factors can modify the association.ResultsTotally 8,033 males and 8,065 females were included. People with CircS had a significantly higher prevalence of OAB compared to the non-CircS group in the fully-adjusted model (OR = 1.238, 95%CI 1.080–1.419). A significant positive correlation between the number of CircS components and the prevalence of OAB was observed when the components were ≥ 6 (OR = 1.975, 95%CI 1.463–2.665). No significant interaction was seen in the three models.ConclusionThere is a positive association between the prevalence of CircS and OAB. When the number of components is ≥6, the prevalence of OAB shows a strongly positive correlation with the number of CircS components.

ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to explore the association between the prevalence rates of circadian syndrome (CircS) and testosterone deficiency (TD).Materials and methodsCross-sectional analysis was conducted on the basis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011–2016. The target population was males aged ≥20 years old. A total of three multivariable logistic regression models were built to elucidate the association between the prevalence rates of CircS and TD. Interactive and stratified analyses were employed to explore whether some variables can modify the above association. Sensitivity analyses were also conducted to verify the stability of the results with extreme values removed.ResultsA total of 3,436 eligible participants were involved. Multivariable logistic regression in the fully adjusted model suggested the CircS group had a significantly higher prevalence rate of TD compared with the non-CircS group (OR = 2.284, 95%CI 1.569 to 3.323). No significant correlation between the number of CircS components and TD was observed in any of the three models. The interactive and stratified analyses showed the association was more obvious in the population with moderate or vigorous activities. The results were robust after extreme data were excluded.ConclusionThere is a positive association between the prevalence rates of CircS and TD in US men. The association becomes more obvious owing to moderate or vigorous activities.

BackgroundThe visceral adiposity index (VAI) is regarded as a reliable indicator to assess body fat distribution and dysfunction. Klotho protein is a hormone with anti-aging biological functions. However, the relationship between them has not been researched.ObjectsThis study aimed to evaluate the association between VAI and serum anti-aging protein klotho in American adults.MethodsA cross-sectional study of participants was conducted based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007–2016. Visceral adiposity was determined using the VAI score, while the klotho protein concentration was measured by ELISA kit. After adjusting some possible confounding variables, multivariate regression model was conducted to estimate the relationship between VAI and klotho protein. Furthermore, the smooth curve fitting and the segmented regression model were applied to examine the threshold effect and to calculate the inflection point.ResultIn total, 6 252 adults were eligible, with a mean VAI of 2.04 ± 0.03 and a mean klotho protein concentration of 848.79 ± 6.98 pg/ml. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that serum klotho protein concentration was lower in participants with high VAI score. When VAI was divided into quartiles, participants in the fourth quartiles of higher VAI had lower klotho protein levels (Q4: -32.25 pg/ml) than participants in the lowest quartile (Q1) after full adjustment (P < 0.05). Segmented regression suggested that the turning point value of VAI was 3.21. A 1-unit increase in VAI was significantly associated with lower klotho protein levels by -18.61 pg/ml (95% CI: -28.87, -8.35; P < 0.05) when VAI ranged from 0.29 to 3.21(accounting for 83.7% of the participants), however, the association was not significant when VAI ranged from 3.21 to 11.81 (P = 0.77).ConclusionThere was a nonlinear correlation between VAI score and the serum anti-aging protein klotho concentrations, showing a saturation effect. When VAI was less than 3.21, they were negatively correlated, and when VAI was greater than 3.21, they had no obvious correlation.

ObjectiveTo explore the association between Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) and kidney stones in an American adult population.Materials and methodsNational Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) datasets from 2007 to 2018 were used. Participants aged ≥20 years who reported kidney stone history and VAI were included. Weighted proportions, multivariable analysis, generalized additive model (GAM), and spline smoothing were used to evaluate the associations between VAI and kidney stones by adjusting gender, age, race, education, marital status, poverty income ratio, smoking, alcohol, high blood pressure, diabetes, congestive heart failure, cancer, vigorous activity, moderate activity, HEI2015 total score, and energy.ResultsTotally 13,871 American adults were included. All the participants were divided by the VAI into four groups according to the quartile: Q1 (11.96–42.89), Q2 (42.90–74.45), Q3 (74.45–131.43), and Q4 (131.45–611.34). The mean ± standard deviation of the VAI in the four groups were Q1 (29.07 ± 8.22), Q2 (57.53 ± 8.81), Q3 (99.52 ± 16.25), and Q4 (225.92 ± 95.83). In the fully adjusted multivariable model, VAI was positively correlated with urolithiasis [odds ratio (OR) = 1.001; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.000–1.001]. Compared with the first quartile of VAI, the population in the fourth quartile of VAI had a higher prevalence of kidney stones (OR = 1.329; 95% CI 1.104–1.600). Subgroup analysis detected no significant interaction effect after adjusting for covariates.ConclusionThe value of VAI is positively correlated with the prevalence of kidney stones, which suggest VAI can be used to assess the potential risk of the prevalence of kidney stones.

BackgroundMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves (radiofrequency energy) to make images, is one of the best imaging methods for soft tissues and can clearly display unique anatomical structures. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has been developed for identifying various malignant tumors.AimTo investigate the diagnostic value of DWI-MRI quantitative analysis in colorectal cancer detection.MethodsThe PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases were searched from inception to May 29, 2020. Studies published in English that used DWI-MRI for diagnosing colorectal cancer were included. Case reports, letters, reviews, and studies conducted in non-humans or in-vitro experiments were excluded. The pooled diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic (HSROC) curves were computed for DWI, and the area under the curve (AUC) and associated standard error (SE) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were also used.ResultsIn total, 15 studies with 1,655 participants were finally included in this meta-analysis. There were four prospective studies and 11 retrospective studies. Eight studies focused on rectal cancer, six on colorectal cancer, and one on colonic cancer. The performance of DWI-MRI for diagnosing colorectal cancer was accurate, with pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio of 0.88 (95% CI = 0.85–0.91), 0.92 (95% CI = 0.91–0.94), 30.36 (95% CI = 11.05–83.43), and 0.44 (95% CI = 0.30–0.64), respectively. The DOR and HSROC curves were 121 (95% CI = 56–261) and 0.92 (λ: 4.79), respectively.ConclusionDWI showed high diagnostic accuracy for colorectal cancer detection. Further studies with large sample sizes and prospective design are needed to confirm these results.

PurposeTo explore the association between Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 and kidney stones in an American adult population.Materials and MethodsNational Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) datasets from 2007 to 2018 were used. Participants aged ≥ 20 years who reported kidney stone history and dietary recall were included. Weighted proportions, multivariable analysis and spline smoothing were used to evaluate the associations between HEI-2015 and nephrolithiasis by adjusting gender, age, race, poverty income ratio, body mass index, education level, marital status, smoking, alcohol intake, energy level, vigorous activity, moderate activity, and some comorbidities.ResultsTotally 30 368 American adults were included, with weighted mean age [standard deviation (SD)] of 47.69 (16.85) years. The overall mean HEI-2015 score (SD) was 50.82 (13.80). In the fully-adjusted multivariable model, HEI-2015 was negatively correlated with urolithiasis [odds ratio (OR) = 0.991; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.988 to 0.994]. Compared with the first quartile of HEI-2015, the population in the fourth quartile of HEI-2015 had a lower prevalence of kidney stones (OR = 0.716; 95% CI 0.635 to 0.807). The association was modified by education and vigorous activity.ConclusionsHEI-2015 is inversely associated with the prevalence of kidney stones, which means better diet quality is associated with a lower risk of nephrolithiasis.

The validity of the field in situ spectral model under the influence of many environmental factors in the field has become a key scientific problem that needs to be broken through in order to promote the technology on a large scale. In this work, 158 soil samples were collected from the Huangshui River Basin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Then the spectra and Organic Matter of these soil samples were measured under in-situ field and laboratory conditions, re-spectivel. Based on the in-situ field spectra processed by direct standardization (DS) algorithms, piecewise direct standardization (PDS) algorithms, general least squares weighting (GLSW) and orthogonal signal correction (OSC) algorithms, the laboratory spectra, field spectra, field DS spectra, field PDS spectra, field GLSW spectra and field OSC spectra were used to estimate the soil organic matter content by stepwise regression models of principal components, and the stability of each model was cross-validated. In order to further prove the effectiveness of the model with combined laboratory and field spectra, the performance of this model was compared with five types of hyperspectral remote sensing models including those with combined laboratory and in-situ field, combined laboratory and DS transformed field, combined laboratory and PDS transformed field, combined laboratory and GLSW transformed field, combined laboratory and OSC transformed field, one by one. The results showed that the precision of the Field-PCSR model (R² = 0.53, RPD = 1.17) was significantly lower than that the one with laboratory spectra(R² = 0.90, RPD = 2.26), and the precision of the model with DS, PDS, and OSC transformed in-situ field spectra was improved (RPDDS=2.23; RPDPDS=1.62 ; RPDosc=1.32). The precision of field DS, field PDS, field GLSW and field OSC spectra combined with laboratory spectra improved significantly, the model with combined laboratory and DS transformed in-situ field spectra is the one with highest accuracy, the RPD is up to 2.26. The results confirm the rule of the priori knowledge of laboratory spectra and DS, PDS, GLSW, and OSC algorithms can improve the reliability of models for oil organic matter content estimation, which can provide important theoretical and methodological support for the development of in-situ field hyperspectral remote sensing detection of soil organic matter content.
