This study investigated whether individuals with high autistic traits rely on psychoacoustic abilities in affective prosody recognition (APR). In 94 college students, Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and psychoacoustic abilities were measured. Results indicated that higher AQ, higher rapid auditory processing (RAP), and maleness were associated with a lower APR accuracy for low-intensity prosodies. There was a strong positive association between RAP and APR for participants with high AQ, whereas low-AQ participants showed no such pattern. The findings suggest a reliance on psychoacoustic abilities as compensatory mechanism for deficits in higher-order processing of emotional signals in social interactions, and imply potential benefits of auditory interventions in improving APR among individuals with high autistic traits.

Growth hormone (GH) has been used for over 35 years, and its safety and efficacy has been studied extensively. Experimental studies showing the permissive role of GH/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I) in carcinogenesis have raised concerns regarding the safety of GH replacement in children and adults who have received treatment for cancer and those with intracranial and pituitary tumours. A consensus statement was produced to guide decision-making on GH replacement in children and adult survivors of cancer, in those treated for intracranial and pituitary tumours and in patients with increased cancer risk. With the support of the European Society of Endocrinology, the Growth Hormone Research Society convened a Workshop, where 55 international key opinion leaders representing 10 professional societies were invited to participate. This consensus statement utilized: (1) a critical review paper produced before the Workshop, (2) five plenary talks, (3) evidence-based comments from four breakout groups, and (4) discussions during report-back sessions. Current evidence reviewed from the proceedings from the Workshop does not support an association between GH replacement and primary tumour or cancer recurrence. The effect of GH replacement on secondary neoplasia risk is minor compared to host- and tumour treatment-related factors. There is no evidence for an association between GH replacement and increased mortality from cancer amongst GH-deficient childhood cancer survivors. Patients with pituitary tumour or craniopharyngioma remnants receiving GH replacement do not need to be treated or monitored differently than those not receiving GH. GH replacement might be considered in GH-deficient adult cancer survivors in remission after careful individual risk/benefit analysis. In children with cancer predisposition syndromes, GH treatment is generally contraindicated but may be considered cautiously in select patients.

Growth hormone (GH) is the key regulator of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) generation in healthy states. However, portal insulin delivery is also an essential co-player in the regulation of the GH/IGF-I axis by affecting and regulating hepatic GH receptor synthesis, and subsequently altering hepatic GH sensitivity and IGF-I generation. Disease states of GH excess (e.g., acromegaly) and GH deficiency (e.g., congenital isolated GH deficiency) are characterized by increased and decreased GH, IGF-I and insulin levels, respectively, where the GH/IGF-I relationship is reflected by a "primary association". When intra-portal insulin levels are increased (e.g., obesity, Cushing's syndrome, or due to treatment with glucocorticoids and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists) or decreased (e.g., malnutrition, anorexia nervosa and type 1 diabetes mellitus), these changes secondarily alter hepatic GH sensitivity resulting in a "secondary association" with discordant GH and IGF-I levels (e.g., high GH/low IGF-I levels or low GH/high IGF-I levels, respectively). Additionally, intra-portal insulin regulates hepatic secretion of IGFBP-1, an inhibitor of IGF-I action. Through its effects on IGFBP-1 and subsequently free IGF-I, intra-portal insulin exerts its effects to influence endogenous GH secretion via the negative feedback loop. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of changes in intra-portal insulin when interpreting the GH/IGF-I axis in disease states. This review summarizes our current understanding of how changes in intra-portal insulin delivery to the liver in health, disease states and drug therapy use and misuse that leads to alterations in GH/IGF-I secretion that may dictate management decisions in afflicted patients. Somatrogon (NGENLA™) is a long-acting GH (LAGH) formulation that was approved in Canada in October 2021 for the treatment of pediatric growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Somatrogon has also received approval in Australia, Japan, the European Union, the USA, and the UK. Somatrogon is a glycoprotein that utilizes three copies of the C-terminal peptide of human chorionic gonadotropin to delay its clearance allowing for once-weekly administration. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of somatrogon for treatment of individuals with GHD. Trials of somatrogon demonstrated positive efficacy results in adults (Phase 2) and children (Phase 2 and 3) with GHD including non-inferiority of height velocity compared to daily GH, with no concerning side effects. Growth responses, pharmacodynamics and safety data are compared to other LAGH products, lonapegsomatropin and somapacitan, in Phase 3 trials in pediatric GHD. New LAGH products, including somatrogon, have the potential to increase patient adherence as well as improve quality of life and clinical outcomes. Clinicians will need to identify the best candidates for LAGH therapy and understand how to safely monitor and adjust therapy. Long-term surveillance studies are necessary to demonstrate adherence, efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and safety of LAGH preparations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the speech recognition equivalence of Mandarin Bamford-Kowal-Bench (BKB) sentence lists with adults and children with normal hearing. Method: A total of 32 lists, each of nine sentences, were compiled from a corpus of BKB-like sentences with paired babble in Mandarin. Interlist equivalence, critical differences, and sensitivity of performance to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were examined. Experiment 1 included 64 native Mandarin-speaking adults with normal hearing. Experiment 2 included 54 native Mandarin-speaking children with normal hearing aged 4-6 years. Results: Among the 32 sentence lists, 28 lists were confirmed to be equivalent in adults, with a mean SNR required for 50% correct (SNR50) of -5.9 ± 0.1 dB, a mean slope of 22.3%/dB ± 1.5%/dB, and a grand 95% critical difference subsequently calculated as 27.2% for score. From the 28 equivalent lists, 27 lists were selected and observed to be equivalent in children, with a mean SNR50 threshold of -2.0 ± 0.2 dB, a mean slope of 15.8%/dB ± 1.1%/dB, and a grand 95% critical difference of 24.6% for score. Conclusions: The Mandarin BKB sentences in babble noise test offers an opportunity for clinicians and researchers to assess speech understanding in adults and preschool children in an efficient manner. For comparisons of performance in different test conditions, 28 equivalent lists are available for adults and 27 equivalent lists for preschool children. The 95% critical difference values can be used for total percentage correct or SNR for 50% performance. Future work will examine the clinical utility for school-age children and children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
