This paper presents an adaptive ensemble control for stochastic systems subject to asymmetric noises and outliers. Asymmetric noises skew system observations, and outliers with large amplitude deteriorate the observations even further. Such disturbances induce poor system estimation and degraded stochastic system control. In this work, we model the asymmetric noises and outliers by mixed asymmetric Laplace distributions (ALDs), and propose an optimal control for stochastic systems with mixed ALD noises. Particularly, we segregate the system disturbed by mixed ALD noises into subsystems, each of which is subject to a specific ALD noise. For each subsystem, we design an iterative quantile filter (IQF) to estimate the system parameters using system observations. With the estimated parameters by IQF, we derive the certainty equivalence (CE) control law for each subsystem. Then we use the Bayesian approach to ensemble the subsystem CE controllers, with each of the controllers weighted by their posterior probability. We finalize our control law as the weighted sum of the control signals by the sub-system CE controllers. To demonstrate our approach, we conduct numerical simulations and Monte Carlo analyses. The results show improved tracking performance by our approach for skew noises and its robustness to outliers, compared with single ALD based and RLS-based control policy.

Tensor ring (TR) decomposition is an efficient approach to discover the hidden low-rank patterns for higher-order tensors, and streaming tensors are becoming highly prevalent in real-world applications. In this paper, we investigate how to track TR decompositions of streaming tensors. An efficient algorithm is first proposed. Then, based on this algorithm and randomized techniques, we present a randomized streaming TR decomposition. The proposed algorithms make full use of the structure of TR decomposition, and the randomized version can allow any sketching type. Theoretical results on sketch size are provided. In addition, the complexity analyses for the obtained algorithms are also given. We compare our proposals with the existing batch methods using both real and synthetic data. Numerical results show that they have better performance in computing time with maintaining similar accuracy.

Tensor ring (TR) decomposition is a simple but effective tensor network for analyzing and interpreting latent patterns of tensors. In this work, we propose a doubly randomized optimization framework for computing TR decomposition. It can be regarded as a sensible mix of randomized block coordinate descent and stochastic gradient descent, and hence functions in a double-random manner and can achieve lightweight updates and a small memory footprint. Further, to improve the convergence, especially for ill-conditioned problems, we propose a scaled version of the framework that can be viewed as an adaptive preconditioned or diagonally-scaled variant. Four different probability distributions for selecting the mini-batch and the adaptive strategy for determining the step size are also provided. Finally, we present the theoretical properties and numerical performance for our proposals.

Tensor ring (TR) decomposition has been widely applied as an effective approach in a variety of applications to discover the hidden low-rank patterns in multidimensional data. A well-known method for TR decomposition is the alternating least squares (ALS). However, it often suffers from the notorious intermediate data explosion issue, especially for large-scale tensors. In this paper, we provide two strategies to tackle this issue and design three ALS-based algorithms. Specifically, the first strategy is used to simplify the calculation of the coefficient matrices of the normal equations for the ALS subproblems, which takes full advantage of the structure of the coefficient matrices of the subproblems and hence makes the corresponding algorithm perform much better than the regular ALS method in terms of computing time. The second strategy is to stabilize the ALS subproblems by QR factorizations on TR-cores, and hence the corresponding algorithms are more numerically stable compared with our first algorithm. Extensive numerical experiments on synthetic and real data are given to illustrate and confirm the above results. In addition, we also present the complexity analyses of the proposed algorithms.

Based on sketching techniques, we propose two randomized algorithms for tensor ring (TR) decomposition. Specifically, by defining new tensor products and investigating their properties, we apply the Kronecker sub-sampled randomized Fourier transform and TensorSketch to the alternating least squares problems derived from the minimization problem of TR decomposition to devise the randomized algorithms. From the former, we find an algorithmic framework based on random projection for randomized TR decomposition. Theoretical results on sketch size and complexity analyses for the two algorithms are provided. We compare our proposals with the state-of-the-art method using both synthetic and real data. Numerical results show that they have quite decent performance in accuracy and computing time

Differential privacy (DP) has been the de-facto standard to preserve privacy-sensitive information in database. Nevertheless, there lacks a clear and convincing contextualization of DP in image database, where individual images' indistinguishable contribution to a certain analysis can be achieved and observed when DP is exerted. As a result, the privacy-accuracy trade-off due to integrating DP is insufficiently demonstrated in the context of differentially-private image database. This work aims at contextualizing DP in image database by an explicit and intuitive demonstration of integrating conceptional differential privacy with images. To this end, we design a lightweight approach dedicating to privatizing image database as a whole and preserving the statistical semantics of the image database to an adjustable level, while making individual images' contribution to such statistics indistinguishable. The designed approach leverages principle component analysis (PCA) to reduce the raw image with large amount of attributes to a lower dimensional space whereby DP is performed, so as to decrease the DP load of calculating sensitivity attribute-by-attribute. The DP-exerted image data, which is not visible in its privatized format, is visualized through PCA inverse such that both a human and machine inspector can evaluate the privatization and quantify the privacy-accuracy trade-off in an analysis on the privatized image database. Using the devised approach, we demonstrate the contextualization of DP in images by two use cases based on deep learning models, where we show the indistinguishability of individual images induced by DP and the privatized images' retention of statistical semantics in deep learning tasks, which is elaborated by quantitative analyses on the privacy-accuracy trade-off under different privatization settings.

For tensor linear systems with respect to the popular t-product, we first present the sketch-and-project method and its adaptive variants. Their Fourier domain versions are also investigated. Then, considering that the existing sketching tensor or way for sampling has some limitations, we propose two improved strategies. Convergence analyses for the methods mentioned above are provided. We compare our methods with the existing ones using synthetic and real data. Numerical results show that they have quite decent performance in terms of the number of iterations and running time.
